Fifty-One’s Story with the Twelfth Doctor
The twelfth story of the ‘Doctor Who’ Puffin e-shorts series is ‘Lights Out’ by Holly Black. Here’s a YouTube interview with Holly Black.
Holly Black is well-known for being the author of ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ as well as writing ‘The Coldest Girl in Coldtown’ and the Magisterium series. I applaud Holly Black for writing this ‘Doctor Who’ story in a short amount of time, especially with the introduction of the Twelfth Doctor in 2014.
‘Lights Out’ features the Twelfth Doctor. The story is divided into five chapters. It’s set between ‘Deep Breath’ and ‘Into the Dalek’ where the Doctor is fetching a cup of coffee for Clara. The audiobook version of this story is read by Samuel Anderson, who played Danny Pink in the TV series.
This, I’m fine with. I’m happy Samuel is the one reading the story as he was there when Peter Capaldi’s era of ‘Doctor Who’ began with Series 8 on TV. Samuel is really into reading this story on audio. He doesn’t create an exact voice for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, but he does get that tone spot on.
It seems the Doctor is hoping to get Clara a special type of coffee when he visits the Intergalactic Coffee Roasting Station (ICRS)…nicknamed ‘Icarus’. 😀 Very soon, a series of murders take place aboard the station. The Doctor must solve who’s committing the murders whilst coffee’s being made.
The story is narrated in the first person by a character called 78351, whom the Doctor nicknames ‘Fifty One’. Fifty-One becomes the Doctor’s short-time companion in this adventure. He happens to be a mutant who hauls coffee aboard the ICRS. A surprise when he turned out to be the murderer! 😮
‘Lights Out’ rating – 7/10
