I’ve referred to

I’ve also based my timeline on CameronK’s version of ‘The Master’s Timeline’ on the original, now-deceased Big Finish forum.

I’ve included all the TV stories, audios; books; graphic novel/comics and adventure games into this list for now.

The (TV); (Audio) and (Video Game) stories are highlighted in VERY DARK GREY.

The (Book) stories are to remain un-highlighted for now.

The short stories are highlighted in VERY DARK GREY and/or ITALICS; and are CENTRED.

      Someone(not me) posted these excerpts on another site. I cut-and-paste here. Since the original poster used only an IP, I don’t know their name. But..

      * From The War Games Episode 7:
      WAR CHIEF: You may have changed your appearance, but I know who you are.
      DOCTOR: Oh, do you?
      WAR CHIEF: Your machine is a TARDIS. You’re too familiar with its controls to be a stranger. DOCTOR: I had every right to leave.
      WAR CHIEF: Stealing a Tardis? Oh, I’m not criticising you. We are two of a kind.

      * From the novelisation of The War Games(page 104):
      The War Chief took the Doctor into his private office just off the war room and told his bodyguards to leave. “Now, ” he said “a traveller in a space time machine. There is only one person you can be”.

      * From the novelisation of The Sea Devils(page 28):
      The Master stroked his beard thoughtfully. Then, slowly, he shook his head. ‘I’m sorry, Doctor, it’s too much to ask.’ ‘But what use is your TARDIS to you while you’re in here?’ Jo asked: ‘It would be difficult for you to understand,’ said the Master, ‘but my TARDIS is my proudest possession.’ The Doctor laughed. ‘You don’t even own it! You stole it from the Time Lords!’ ‘As you stole yours!’ retorted the Master.

      ‘The first TARDIS was very small,’ he said. ‘On the outside, yes,’ said the old Keeper. ‘Inside it could carry up to three persons, four with a squeeze. Later we built much bigger ones. There have been two stolen, you know.’ The young Time Lord didn’t know. ‘By our enemies?’ he asked. ‘No. By Time Lords. They both became bored with this place. It was too peaceful for them, not enough happening.’ The old Keeper smiled to himself, as though remembering with some glee all the fuss when two TARDISes were stolen. ‘One of them nowadays calls himself “the Doctor”. The other says he is “the Master”.

      * From the novelisaion of The Three Doctors(page 93):
      In his various incarnations, the Doctor had found himself up against many terrifying enemies. With the exception of the Master, this was the first time he had found himself opposed by a fellow Time Lord. And in comparison to Omega, the Master shrank almost to a petty criminal.

      Malcolm Hulke said of the Master, and his relationship with the Doctor: “There was a peculiar relationship between the Master and the Doctor: one felt that the Master wouldn’t really have liked to eliminate the Doctor…you see the Doctor was the only person like him at the time in the whole universe, a renegade Time Lord and in a funny sort of way they were partners in crime.” (printed in Doctor Who Magazine 91, pp 17, 28).

      ..Me again. Very clearly, according to both Malcolm Hulke, and yes according to Terrance Dicks

      1) The Doctor is a renegade Time Lord
      2)The War Chief is a renegade Time Lord
      3)The Master is a renegade Time Lord
      4)The Doctor and the Master were the only two renegade Time Lords during that period
      5)The Doctor stole a TARDIS
      6)The War Chief stole a TARDIS
      7)The Master stole a TARDIS
      8)Up to Season 8 of the Classic Series. only two TARDISes had ever been stolen, one by the Doctor, and one by the Master
      9)Prior to Omega, the Doctor had only ever faced one other renegade Time Lord..the Master

      So, either Dicks and Hulke(along with Barry Letts, Robert Holmes etc.) all had something seriously wrong with them, or the War Chief is the Master.

      Alternatively, we could take the route of the writers of The Discontinuity Guide. Under their entry for Terror of the Autons, they list an “Untelevised” adventure where..

      ‘The Doctor has been to a circus. At some point, he angered the Master enough to make him want to kill his ‘old acquaintance’. The Master’s hypnotic skills were evident then, although he was not nearly as learned as he is now. [Their time together at the Academy wasn’t very important to them (the first Doctor doesn’t recognise him in The Five Doctors) so the antagonism must have arisen during unscreened later meetings.]’

      Ignoring the circus, how is that “untelevised”? A renegade Time Lord using hypnotism, and the Doctor was the one who ruined his scheme , so now the Master wants revenge? Doesn’t sound anything at all like the War Chief in The War Games, does it?

        Hello Tim.

        To be honest, I was shocked the first time I read(in a Who fanzine) someone say they are NOT the same character.

        As noted, if we got by what it says in the television show, the Target novels, and interviews with the creative team in the 70’s, it’s obvious they’re the same character.

        What’s more, the general public(who are, after all, the target viewership for Doctor Who), who came to the show after the Troughton Era, will see The War Games for the first time, and immediately recognise one character as being the Master, even if he’s not referred to as such.

        It’s only a very small part of organised fandom who will find that somehow amusing(why?). Like they are somehow ‘superior’ to the plebs. If Joe Bloggs happens to see The War Games, he will spot Edward Brayshaw, and immediately remark that “That’s the Master!” At which point some anorak will chortle to himself, because Joe never read some obscure fanzine column saying they can’t be, because “The Doctor and the War Chief don’t recognise each other in The War Games”. Even though they very clearly, and very obviously, do recognise each other in The War Games.

        Personally, I also always really liked the idea of the Doctor and the Master being sort of mirror, equal and opposite, versions of each other. That really only works if there’s the Good One and the Evil One. If there’s the Evil Two, that whole symmetry and balance is thrown completely out.

      The explanation given is that following Timewyrm: Exodus, the War Chief regenerates into the Delgado Master. An unofficial (i.e. fanmade) short story written by McKeon (who finished up Time’s Champion where Hinton left off), Veiled Memories, takes place after Spearhead from Space for the Doctor and between Exodus and Terror of the Autons for the Master. It shows the latter’s regeneration, and also establishes that Spearhead is set in September of 1969.

        It is all but said outright in the Target books (written by Hulke and Dicks, the men who wrote The War Games, and created/write for Delgado ).

        The novelisation of The War Games explicitly states that the Doctor and the War Chief are the only two renegade Time Lords up to that point.

        The novelisation of Terror of the Autons mentions the events of The War Games for the history of the Master, and the Doctor/Master antagonism.

        The novelisation of Colony in Space explicitly states that the Doctor and the Master are the only two renegade Time Lords up to that time. As well as again giving the events of The War Games for the history of the Master and the Doctor.

        The novelisation of The Sea Devils states that the Doctor and the Master are the only two renegade Time Lords.

        The novelisation of The Three Doctors states that, prior to his encounter with Omega, the Doctor had only ever had one other Time Lord adversary..the Master.

        The EDA novels had a character called ‘the Magistrate’, who later became ‘the War King’. It was clear from the description that it’s the Master.

        Then, in the Faction Paradox series, the ‘War King’ makes it clear that he’s the Master and the War Chief.

        There is nothing in either The Dark Path or Timewyrm:Exodus to exclude the possibility that Koschei and Kriegslieter are the same Time Lord.

        Having not listened to the Dreyfuss audios, the only “problem” with War Chief=Master seems to be Divided Lotalties. Yet, that’s not a literal flashback. It’s a Toymaker-induced nightmare, where the details can not possibly be ‘real’.

      I will need to listen to the Two Masters trilogy for confirmation, but there’s some body-swapping going on between the Geoffrey Beevers and Alex MacQueen’s Masters if you read the text closely. This is based on discussions made by other fans on the Divergent Universe forum. Tim. 🙂

    The Master also appears in the ‘Seventh Doctor’ section of the novel The Right Doctors.

    And those Titan comics with ‘the Asian child’.

    And Stream from The Hollows of Time is the Master too.

        I’ve also added the Master as Stream from ‘The Hollows of Time’ for now.

        Can’t find information about Master with Chang Lee in Titan Comics yet, so don’t know story titles and placement of them. Any help would be appreciated.

        Hello.

        It’s not Chang Lee. In a series of Eleventh Doctor(and the War Doctor) comics, the Doctor meets the Master in the form of the “Asian child”. I think they are collected as “the Eleventh Doctor Year two”, but don’t hold me to that. I believe they are supposed to take place between Macqueen and Jacobi.

        Also remembered ANOTHER new comic, Doorway to Hell(soon to be collected into the Graphic Novel of the same name) which is ANOTHER last adventure for the Delgado Master……

        As for the Eight Doctors, I actually forgot the Sixth Doctor section. I was referring to the Seventh Doctor section, where the Ainley Master appears, leading directly into The TV Movie(well, it fit into the continuity at the time…..)

    The Man in the Ion Mask opens saying that it takes place shortly after the Devil’s End Incident, so I think that should probably be the first one after the Daemons. Then, Freedom is set while he is stilk awaiting his trial, so that should also be before Harvest of Time. The Switching ends with the Master transferred to a facility on the coast, which suggests that that one is right before the Sea Devils

      I’ve yet to hear to hear the War Master box sets, but I’ll take your word for it. Thanks for letting me know.

      Just to say, according to tardis.wikia, Derek Jacobi does play the Master as well as the Eighth Doctor in the Master’s body in ‘The Scaramancer’. Again, I’ll have to listen to the audios to be sure, which hopefully should be soon.

    Okay doke, be sure to tag me when you do as I’d love some other input rather than just my own feedback haha I will say they’re brilliant audios and well worth the listen.

    Also have a few other additions I suggest you can add if you haven’t already, one being the Unwanted Gift of Prophecy, from Myths and Legends, it features Delgado – Ainley – Simm – Gomez and Lucy Saxon, respectively depending on the order of appearance for each, but from Missy’s point of view it’s very early days (just before Bekdel Test I’d say) — Simm’s is aboard the Valiant, Delgado in Prison etc — and leads into a lot of important events, so well worth the read. And also The Night Harvest, from the Wintertime Paradox, that’s Saxon’s only full written story to my knowledge – takes place after he leaves Gallifrey but obviously before the Doctor Falls, he has his TARDIS as such.

    Hope this is of further help, I collect pretty much all the Master content haha, have a good night — P.

    Looks like there are two new War Master serials out as well. To the best of my knowledge, their continuity is:

    The War Master: Self-Defence (all parts) take place between Anti-Genesis and Killing Time

    The War Master: Escape from Reality has four stories.
    The Wrath of Medusa is after Self Defence and before Anti-Genesis
    Not sure where the other three go but my guess is after that.
