‘City of Monsters’, Part One, Chapter 2

2. Monster Chases

SCENE #13 – INT – COURTYARD, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
Back on Teruvada 16, out in the courtyard of the Grondor citadel, Garnik and Ernpic talk privately to each other.

ERNPIC
“Father, I’m not happy with this arrangement. These two people! They’re aliens! Strangers!”

GARNIIK
“I know, Ernpic. I intend to put them to the test. To earn their trust. If they betray us, we know where we stand.”

ERNPIC
“But why bother? Their reputation is quite clear. They’re ludicrous; unreliable. That Tulu girl certainly is scandalous. And that Bork is a nut.”

GARNIK
“That’s enough, my son. You will not speak such words. It is true they do not conform to our ways. But whatever their culture, their race, we will not judge them. You must obey the king’s will.”

ERNPIC
“We have more pressing matters to attend to. With the humans; their Earth empire and the war. We must have order. Not delay.”

GARNIK
“Patience, my son! We will have order. But we must also have resourcefulness. I believe Bork’s demonstration of this machine will provide that favour.”

ERNPIC
“How?”

GARNIK
“Consider an exchange of information of how this machine works. To use it as a war weapon. As a means of handling current affairs with society. It may be far-fetched, but I’m willing to pursue the matter if you’re not.”

Moment of silence.

ERNPIC
(grudgingly) “O King, I hear your words faithfully. I’m not as wise as you are.”

GARNIK
“No you’re not, my son. But then again your studies at school didn’t help much, did they?”

Moment of tension ensues. Eventually Garnik and Ernpic re-enter the citadel to return to the throne room.

SCENE #14  – INT – CHARING CROSS ROAD, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Back in London, Jo runs for her life on Charing Cross Road from the raging T-Rex. She pants for breath, finding it hard to run further. She stops to breathe.

JO
(pants) “No! Can’t stop! Come on, girl! You maybe old but you’ve still got life left!”

Jo keeps on running and passes shops on her left. She stops running to look.

JO
“Hey! A coffee shop up ahead! I can always hide there!” (shudders) “I better hurry before I get eaten alive! Inside!”

Jo runs for the coffee shop. The T-Rex approaches nearby. It roars and lunges to get at her.

SCENE #15 – INT – COFFEE SHOP, CHARING CROSS ROAD – DAY, MORNING
Inside the coffee shop, Jo looks around trying to find a place to hide.

JO
“Now…where can one find a place to hide in a coffee shop?”

The T-Rex smashes bits of wall of the coffee shop from outside as Jo becomes indecisive.

JO
(panics) “Oh come on! Hurry up, Jo! Use your initiative! Improvise! Oh it’s at times like this I really need the Doctor!”

Suddenly the front door smashes open, causing Jo to scream in terror. She sees the T-Rex roaring viciously at her through the broken door.

JO
(trembles) “Oh! You’ve found me, have you? Oh I wish for a miracle! Please may help come, please!”

Jo shrinks back, as the T-Rex lunges forward.

SCENE #16 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
Back on Teruvada 16, King Garnik and his son Ernpic return to the throne room. Bork and Tulu are there to recieve them.

BORK
“Now, your majesties! I shall demonstrate the wonders of this machine. And with an expanded screen!”

Bork flicks a switch and an expanded holographic projection of the machine’s screen appears. Bork and Tulu cheer, delighted.

TULU
“There! You can now see things in better size than ever before!”

BORK
(to Tulu) “Thank you, Tulu my dear.” (to Garnik; Ernpic) “Now I shall show you each in turn, the most terrifying aliens, creatures and monsters that anyone’s encountered thus far in the whole of the universe.”

TULU
“Show them circuit one, Bork!”

BORK
“Yes, my dear. I was just about to.”

Bork flicks a switch. Up on the screen appear metal men that march with stomping footsteps.

ERNPIC
(startled) “What is this?! What are those things?!”

BORK
“These are one of my favourites! They are called…Cybermen!”

GARNIK
“Cybermen?”

BORK
“They originate from the planet Mondas. Once human beings after taking out their own body parts and organs and replacing them with metal ones. Metal men who stalk and march in the night and turning everyone into one of them.”

TULU
“Yeah. You wouldn’t want to meet them on a dark night.”

Bork flicks another switch to change to another circuit.

BORK
“Now here we are in circuit two. What you’re seeing now are another group of metal monsters called…Daleks. They are ruthless, evil and vicious. They show no mercy. They kill anything in their sights that isn’t a Dalek.”

TULU
“And that’s a fact.” (to Garnik) “If one was to appear right now, you and your kind would be dead in seconds, your majesty.”

GARNIK
(impressed) “Interesting. These are recorded images of course.”

BORK
“Oh no, majestic one. This is real live entertainment. The monsters in the machine are as real as you and I. But safely contained within each of their miniature environments. So there’s nothing to worry about.”

ERNPIC
“This is outrageous! What is the point of all of this?! All you’re doing is showing creatures and monsters merely to enlighten us! It’s a waste of the king’s valuable time!”

GARNIK
(scolds; to Ernpic) “Thank you, my son!” (to Bork) “Do continue, Mr. Bork.”

BORK
“Oh…not all creatures in this box of mine are monstrous and evil. There are creatures who are gentle and benign. The Tellurians for example.” (to Tulu) “Err…Tulu?”

TULU
“Circuit three, Bork.”

BORK
“Ah yes! Circuit three.”

Bork flicks a switch and the image changes again on the machine.

BORK
“There we are, your majesties! These are the Tellurians!”

ERNPIC
“Tellurians? Where do they come from?”

BORK
“Oh very far from here. Far from your galaxy, your majesty. They inhabit the star system called Sol. On the third planet called…Earth.”

GARNIK
“Earth?! Did you say Earth?”

ERNPIC
“Humans?! Earthlings?!”

BORK
(stammers) “Err…yes! There are other names for them. Human; Earthling; Tellurian; whatever takes your fancy.”

ERNPIC
“We are in the midst of a feud with the human scum! The Nargdu Empire is soon to be on the brink of war with them. Glory to Empire!”

TULU
“Feud?! Brink of war?!”

BORK
(apologetically) “Your majesties, I had no idea…”

ERNPIC
(interjects) “We do not consider the humans to be benign. They are savage. Whereas we Nargdu are civilised. If we find you two are spies working for the Earth Empire, you will be shot on sight! Is that understood?!”

BORK
(anxiously) “Your majesties! You have my word as well as Tulu’s that we’re not supporters for the humans! We’re against them! You can rely on our moral support!”

ERNPIC
“For your sake Bork, I hope so!”

After a moment of tension, Bork continues with the demonstration.

SCENE #17 – EXT – OXFORD STREET, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Back in Oxford Street, London, Nyssa and Billy are on the run. They are still being chased by Autons as they keep firing on them with their weapons.

NYSSA
(pants) “Keep running, Billy! Keep running! We can’t stop now!”

BILLY
“These guys won’t stop! What makes them tick?! They’re made of plastic for crying out loud!”

NYSSA
“We’ve been running for goodness knows how long! We must find a hiding place!”

BILLY
“We’ve been trying to do that for the past five minutes! And all we’ve been doing is get shot at!”

The Autons fire again. Nyssa and Billy duck as they run.

NYSSA
“Then let’s keep on dodging before these creatures run out of ammunition!”

BILLY
“I don’t think I have the breath!”

They keep on running whilst the Autons fire at them.

NYSSA
(realises) “Billy, look! Up ahead! Some kind of shop! A laundrette! Let’s make for it!”

BILLY
(confused) “Where?!” (realises) “Oh I see! Right you are then! Quick!”

Nyssa and Billy make a dash for the laundrette whilst the Autons gain on them.

BILLY
“Nyssa?! They’re coming this way!”

NYSSA
“Shut the door behind you once we’re in!”

Nyssa and Billy eventually reach the laundrette and enter inside. Billy makes to shut the door as the Autons approach.

BILLY
(panics) “Nyssa…!”

NYSSA
(from inside; shouts) “Shut the door, Billy! Don’t let them get in!”

Billy slams the door shut, snapping one of the Auton’s arms off in the process.

SCENE #18 – INT – LAUNDRETTE, OXFORD STREET – DAY, MORNING
Billy locks the door tight shut once he and Nyssa are inside the laundrette. The Autons bang on the door from outside.

BILLY
“That should hold them! The door’s shut and one of those thing’s arms managed to snap off once I closed it!”

NYSSA
“They’re bound to get in through the windows by smashing it in. We must hide before they get in here!”

BILLY
(thinks; realises) “There’s a cupboard! At the far back! We can hide in there!”

NYSSA
“Well spotted, Billy! Come on!”

Taking each other’s hands, Nyssa and Billy run for the cupboard and enter inside. The Autons smash their way in through the windows of the laundrette.

SCENE #19 – INT – CUPBOARD, LAUNDRETTE – DAY, MORNING
Nyssa and Billy hide down low in the laundrette cupboard as the Autons break in.

BILLY
“You’re right, Nyssa! They smashed their way in through the windows! Let’s hope they won’t find us in here.”

NYSSA
“It’s good you locked the cupboard.” (Pause) “Billy? You did lock the door, didn’t you?”

BILLY
(anxiously) “You didn’t say anything about locking the door, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(groans) “Oh Billy!”

Nyssa holds Billy back as approaching footsteps get closer.

BILLY
“Oh no! They’ve found us!”

NYSSA
“This is not turning out for the best for us.”

BILLY
“Are you scared, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(lies) “No.”

BILLY
“Good. Because I’m scared too.”

Nyssa and Billy hug each other to comfort one another.

BILLY
“Close your eyes, sweetheart.”

NYSSA
(confused) “Pardon?”

BILLY
“It helps you to bear the worst!”

Nyssa and Billy embrace each other tightly as they sit on the floor, waiting anxiously. Suddenly, there’s a long moment of silence. After a few moments, Nyssa and Billy become confused.

BILLY
(quietly) “Nyssa? Aren’t there…?”

NYSSA
“No footsteps. I can’t hear any footsteps.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Could they not find us?”

NYSSA
“They can’t have given up that easily.”

BILLY
“Perhaps that door was locked after all and they couldn’t open it.”

NYSSA
“But how come they couldn’t if they’ve got weapons, Billy?”

After a few moments, Nyssa gets up from the floor. Billy soon gets up as well.

BILLY
“You’re going outside?”

NYSSA
“Let’s check and see, shall we?”

They make their way to the cupboard door as Nyssa turns the knob. She and Billy head off as they leave the cupboard.

SCENE #20 – INT – LAUNDRETTE, OXFORD STREET – DAY, MORNING
Nyssa and Billy find the laundrette empty with no Auton in sight. They stumble upon smashed glass and masonry as they tread carefully.

NYSSA
“Billy, I don’t understand! They’ve gone! There’s no sign of them! No living plastic men in sight”

BILLY
“Well they were here, Nyssa. That’s to be sure. They’ve left a mess. Ruined glass; smashed up washing machines, broken walls.”

NYSSA
“They must have gone out into the street. Come on!”

Nyssa takes Billy with her as they go out into the street together.

SCENE #21 – EXT – OXFORD STREET, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Out in Oxford Street, Nyssa and Billy find no sign of the Autons. The place is empty.

NYSSA
(baffled) “No sign of them at all! Not even a glimmer! This is strange!”

BILLY
“Like they’ve vanished into thin air. Were we rescued by a saving grace? If that were the case, I wonder who or what it was.”

NYSSA
“The Doctor perhaps? I wonder where he is.”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
(relieved) “Well, I’m glad they’re gone. Thank goodness we didn’t get killed.”

NYSSA
(relieved) “Yes, I’m pleased too. Come here, dear!”

Nyssa takes Billy into her arms and they embrace each other in a hug. They eventually let go, feeling relieved.

BILLY
“Thanks Nyssa. I needed that.”

NYSSA
“But I’m still curious as to what those things were. Where they came from and who’s controlling them.”

BILLY
“Beats me. We have to be more careful when we pass shops with shop window mannequins.”

NYSSA
(realises; surprised) “Is that the arm you snapped off from that creature earlier? On the floor there.”

Billy sees it and goes over to pick the detached arm up off from the floor. He checks it over.

BILLY
“Yes. It is. And in good nick. It came clean off!”

NYSSA
“Once this is over, I’d like to take that arm back to the TARDIS and analyse its composition with the equipment and labs on board. Find out what sort of plastic it is to have life generated into it.”

BILLY
“We can always use this arm to defend ourselves if necessary in the streets.”

NYSSA
“Defend ourselves?”

BILLY
“Yes! After all, it is a weapon of sorts. I wonder how it works. It must have a set of complicated circuitry from the fellow who had it. It’s more like the arm of a robot. Like when we were on [Lonmar…”]

Sudddenly the Auton arm comes to life. Billy reacts startled as well as Nyssa before he throws the Auton arm away to the ground.

NYSSA
(cries) “Billy!”

BILLY
(cries) “Yikes! That arm just moved by itself!”

The Auton arm soon moves of its own accord via its hand with its own fingers as it comes towards Nyssa and Billy.

BILLY
“It’s coming towards us!”

NYSSA
(urgently) “Billy, throw that arm back into the laundrette!”

BILLY
“Are you sure?! It doesn’t look safe!”

NYSSA
“Just do it!”

BILLY
“Right!”

Billy nervously picks up the Auton arm and makes it throw it through the door of the laundrette.

NYSSA
“Billy, hurry!”

BILLY
“Alright!”

Billy throws the arm into the laundrette through the front door and closes it shut. Once closing the door shut, Nyssa and Billy breathe a sigh of reief.

NYSSA
(relieved) “Thank goodness for that!”

BILLY
“Sorry about that, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “Don’t worry about it, Billy.” (Pause) “Come on. Let’s get away from here.”

BILLY
“Shame really. I was hoping we might have a weapon to defend ourselves.” (Pause) “Where do we go from here?”

NYSSA
“Back to Piccadilly Circus and find the Doctor. He’s probably waiting for us. Fifteen minutes, remember?”

BILLY
“Oh yes. We’ve been more than fifteen minutes. haven’t we?”

NYSSA
(gradually; realises) “There’s an abandoned car over there! Let’s take that and make the journey back to Piccadilly Circus.”

BILLY
“I wonder if the car keys are left in the ignition? Considering the previous owner.”

NYSSA
“I want to know who’s going to drive the car.”

BILLY
“I’ll drive.”

Letting go of the door to the laundrette, Nyssa and Billy make their way over to the abandoned car to head back to Piccadilly Circus. The detached Auton arm inside the laundrette fumbles for the doorknob from inside.

SCENE #22 – EXT – GREEN PARK, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile in Green Park, the Doctor has trouble hiding behind trees as the robots keep burning down the forest. He dodges shots from their weapons.

DOCTOR
(grimaces) “Is there another way I can walk freely without getting zapped?!”

It’s a few minutes before the Doctor pops out again from behind the trees to call out to the robots.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Look! Can we just talk about this please?! If there’s something…”

The robots fire their weapons relentlessly at the Doctor. He jumps out of the way again before hiding behind one more tree. The robots burn down the tree the Doctor was hiding behind earlier. The Doctor groans whilst hiding behind the last tree.

DOCTOR
(groans) “The last tree left! Marvellous! If they won’t talk, how else do I walk with my skin unhinged?!”

The Doctor remains behind the tree for a bit, contemplating his next move. He then looks up to see a stroke of luck before him.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Hello? A buggie! Golf buggie! In the path close to me!” (sighs) “Transport of delight!”

The Doctor makes a run for the buggie, dodging shots fired by the robots as he goes. Eventually, he reaches the buggie and examines it. The robots stop firing as they advance towards him.

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Somebody must have left it here whilst playing golf. That gives me an advantage. I’ll have to be quick though. Those robots will fry me for sausages!”

The Doctor then looks to the ground and sees a metal lid beside him. He picks the metal lid up from the ground.

DOCTOR
“Well, well, well. A metal lid for a dustbin! This will do for defence!”

The Doctor gets into the buggie and is about to drive it whilst the robots continue to advance towards him. He readies himself, holding the metal lid in his hand.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Right. On the count of three. One…two…three!”

The Doctor drives on in the buggie, holding the metal dustbin lid up at the robots. The robots open fire and hit the dustbin lid as the Doctor drives towards them. The shots backfire instantly and hit the robots, causing them to stagger backwards once hit. The Doctor looks at them whilst he’s driving.

DOCTOR
(to robots) “Aha! Got you! Sorry, robots! But you obviously started it.” (Pause) “Good day to you both!”

The Doctor returns his attention to drive the jeep.

DOCTOR
“Now…how does this thing work?”

The Doctor then accidentally puts the buggie into reverse as it goes backwards abruptly. He manages to stop the jeep.

DOCTOR
“Oh! That was reverse, wasn’t it? Let’s go forward, shall we?”

The Doctor puts the gearbox into first and drives the jeep forwards. This happens just as the giant robots recover and begin to advance on the Doctor again. They stomp towards him as the Doctor drives on. The robots train their weapons on him.

ROBOT #1
“We must capture alien intruder.”

DOCTOR
(calls) “Sorry, you big chaps! Can’t stop! Catch me if you can!”

ROBOT #2
“He is not to escape. He is to be terminated.”

ROBOT #1
“Understood. Terminate; terminate; terminate!”

The giant robots fire their weapons, marching off and stomping in Green Park. They chase after the Doctor in his buggie.

SCENE #23 – INT – CAR, LEICESTER SQUARE – DAY, MORNING
Nyssa and Billy arrive in Leicester Square off Charing Cross Road by car. Billy slows the car to a halt.

NYSSA
“You’re lost, aren’t you?”

BILLY
“Of course not!”

NYSSA
“Then where are we?”

BILLY
“I…well…somewhere in London.”

NYSSA
(sighs) “Marvellous!”

BILLY
“I’m sorry, Nyssa. But London’s a very big city. Too many junction points.”

NYSSA
“I thought you were supposed to have a photographic memory.”

BILLY
“I have! But I’m not one for geography. You know that!”

NYSSA
(sighs) “Come on. Let’s see where we are.”

SCENE #24 – EXT – LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Nyssa and Billy get out of the car as they begin to explore Leicester Square.

BILLY
“Well, we can’t be far away. There ought to be signposts nearby.”

NYSSA
“Feel free to point them out to me!”

BILLY
(realises) “Hey, look! There’s a road sign up ahead! Leicester Square!”

NYSSA
“Very helpful.”

BILLY
“Are you going to be like this with me forever?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “No. No of course not.” (Pause) “I’m sorry, Billy. I’m just worried about what’s happened. And about the Doctor.”

BILLY
“I know. Me too.” (Pause) “There ought to be a visitor’s centre somewhere. Then we could get maps of London…”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Ssh, Billy!”

BILLY
“What?”

NYSSA
“Look over there!”

Billy looks to where Nyssa’s pointing. They see the Chemi-World Ltd building before them.

NYSSA
“See, Billy! That’s rather unusual, isn’t it?”

BILLY
(astonished) “There’s people. People going in and out of that building. Real, proper people.”

NYSSA
“They seem to be going about their daily routine. Their normal work. They’re the first signs of life we’ve seen in this city so far!”

BILLY
“Yeah I know. Is this the only place where there’s people? If so, I’m starting to get worried.”

NYSSA
“Chemi-World Ltd. That’s what the building’s called. Chemi-World Ltd.”

BILLY
“I don’t like the sound of it.”

NYSSA
“Some branch of an environmental institute. That unintentionally abuses the atmosphere of your world with pollution.”

BILLY
“I tend to stay away from those places. I find the air stale when I go to country warehouses like that.”

NYSSA
“Come on! Let’s go inside!”

BILLY
“Whatever for?”

NYSSA
“To get some answers. Whether it’s from the people or by mere observation.”

Nyssa and Billy eventually make their way to enter the building, whilst people continue to go in and out of it.

SCENE #25 – EXT – GREEN PARK, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Back in Green Park, the Doctor drives at full speed in his buggie whilst being chased by robots. The robots keep on firing their weapons at the Doctor as he drives away from them.

DOCTOR
(agitated) “Come on, you stupid little thing! Be a bit faster!”

The Doctor puts his foot down whilst driving the buggie. He soon realises he’s slowing down, as a clunking noise echoes from the buggie. He bangs hard on the petrol gauge.

DOCTOR
“Oh no! Please no! Don’t run out on me now!”

The Doctor bangs harder on the petrol gauge, but it’s no use as the buggie slows down even more. The robots keep on firing and the Doctor dodges them whilst he slows down.

DOCTOR
“It’s no good! I’ll have to get away out of this thing!”

He then looks ahead to see a sight that lifts his spirits.

DOCTOR
“Ah! Up ahead! The Memorial Gates! And if I’m not mistaken, the Canadian Memorial! Right, Doctor! You’ve found a hiding place! Let’s hope it lasts long enough for me when I get there.”

The Doctor pulls the buggie to a halt and jumps out to reach for the Memorial Gates and the Canadian Memorial. Whilst the Doctor’s escaped, the robots destroy his abandoned buggie with their weapons. The Doctor sees this as he runs away.

DOCTOR
(saddened) “Ah! My little transport got fried!” (sighs) “Oh well. Make sure it’s not me next!”

The Doctor reaches for his new hiding place; goes through the Memorial Gates and gets underneath the Canadian Memorial, concealing himself from sight.

DOCTOR
(pants; quietly) “Ah! Made it!” (Pause) “Now, keep low and quiet, Doctor!”

The Doctor becomes silent, as the robots approach nearby. They walk past towards the Memorial Gates as well as the Doctor’s hiding place. They stop to scan the area. They scan for quite some time before coming to a formative conclusion.

DOCTOR
(mutters; quietly; impatiently) “Come on, come on, you robots! Go away! Leave this place!”

A moment of tension ensues. Eventually the robots stop scanning and turn to face one another.

ROBOT #1
“No life-forms reported. The fugitive has evaded us.”

ROBOT #2
“We must return to central control. We will go to report.”

ROBOT #1
“Affirmative.”

The robots soon walk off, leaving the Canadian Memorial site behind them. After a few minutes, the Doctor comes out of hiding and breathes a sigh of relief.

DOCTOR
“Phew! That was close! Well, these robots don’t seem to be thorough in their search of me. I was almost expected to be impressed.”

The Doctor walks around the memorial site to track the robot’s path, contemplating what to do next.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I’d better get back to Nyssa and Billy. They’ll be waiting for me at Piccadilly Circus. I hope I haven’t been too long. I’m way over fifteen minutes.”

With that, the Doctor makes his way back to Piccadilly Circus.

SCENE #26 – INT – CORRIDOR, CHEMI-WORLD LTD CENTRAL HQ – DAY, MORNING
In the Chemi-World building, Nyssa and Billy meet Miss Gallo at her desk outside Mr. Lloyd’s office.

MISS GALLO
“I’m very sorry. But I can’t allow you two into Mr. Lloyd’s office without an appointment. It’s company policy.”

NYSSA
“We only want to know what’s happening. To London. Why it’s so quiet.”

BILLY
“And filled with monsters. Something’s strange. No-one seems to get that into their heads.”

MISS GALLO
“I’m sure Mr Lloyd will be happy to talk to you. But at the moment, he’s very busy with a client.”

NYSSA
“You can’t turn us away like that. This is urgent! Do you understand? Urgent!”

BILLY
“Listen to Nyssa! She means what she says! And so do I!”

MISS GALLO
“I’m sorry. I can’t help you. Good day.”

The phone then rings and Miss Gallo picks it up.

MISS GALLO
(through phone) “Mr. Lloyd’s office, how can I help you?” (Pause) “Good afternoon, Mr. Elgin.” (Pause) “Yes, I’m sure Mr. Lloyd will be delighted [to welcome you…”]

Whilst Miss Gallo’s on the phone, Billy whispers to Nyssa.

BILLY
(whispers) “Nyssa? The secretary’s on the phone!”

NYSSA
(whispers) “Yes Billy, I know.”

BILLY
(whispers) “Well? Since she’s on the phone…”

Nyssa gradually realises before she and Billy walk past Miss Gallo at her desk on the phone.

MISS GALLO
“Mr. Lloyd’s fully booked for that occasion I’m afraid.” (Pause) [“I can ask him to…”]

SCENE #27 – INT – LLOYD’S OFFICE, CHEMI-WORLD LTD CENTRAL HQ – DAY, MORNING
Nyssa and Billy enter Mr. Lloyd’s office. Mr. Lloyd has a meeting with Jo Jones, which is a repeat of Scene #3 in the story.

MR. LLOYD
(casually) “[Very interesting, Mrs. Jones.] Tell me more about this…set of arguments you lay against me and my company.”

Jo and Mr. Lloyd realise they’ve been interrupted as they see Nyssa and Billy before them.

NYSSA
(apologetically) “Excuse me? Sorry to interrupt…”

MR. LLOYD
(interrupts; outraged) “Who the blazes are you? What are you doing in my office?!”

JO
“They’re not your staff, Mr. Lloyd?”

Miss Gallo then calls from outside.

MISS GALLO
“‘Ere, you’re not allowed in there! Oi, you two!”

Miss Gallo enters at this point, quite tense after chasing Nyssa and Billy.

MR. LLOYD
“Miss Gallo! You let these strangers into my office?!”

MISS GALLO
(apologetically) “I’m sorry, Mr. Lloyd. I told them you were busy…”

MR. LLOYD
(interrupts) “You’ve not heard the last of this, Miss Gallo. I shall have to consider…”

BILLY
(interrupts) “We only came to talk to you, Mr. Lloyd. It’s imperative!”

NYSSA
“Something’s amiss with London. No one is willing to tell us what’s happened.”

MR. LLOYD
(angrily) “I don’t give to charities!” (to Miss Gallo) “Take them away, Miss Gallo.”

MISS GALLO
“Yes, Mr. Lloyd.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Come on, you two!”

BILLY
(protests) “Wait! You haven’t heard us yet!”

NYSSA
(pleads) “Please, listen to us!”

Miss Gallo grabs them before Jo gets up from her seat and rushes to Nyssa and Billy’s defence.

JO
(protests) “Just a minute, Mr. Lloyd! You should be ashamed of yourself! You’ve no right to treat these two unfairly.”

MR. LLOYD
“Mrs. Jones, I only meant to…”

JO
(interrupts) “These two young people have something to say! And I want to hear them! Please let them speak before you start throwing them out!”

MR. LLOYD
(grumbles) “Oh very well.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “But be quick, you two!”

At that, Miss Gallo releases Nyssa and Billy.

BILLY
“Thank you. At least someone’s willing to listen.”

NYSSA
(to Mr. Lloyd) “Mr. Lloyd, has it occurred to you that there aren’t many people about? That London happens to be empty?”

MR. LLOYD
“I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. London’s perfectly normal to me.”

BILLY
(to Jo) “You, Miss…or Mrs? Don’t you think or feel London’s not the same as it was before? That it’s now populated by shop window dummies coming to life?”

JO
(to Billy) “I’m very sorry, sweetie. I don’t know what you mean.” (realises) “Wait a minute! Shop window dummies?!”

BILLY
“Yes! My girlfriend and I were walking in Oxford street…”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Wait a minute!” (realises; to Jo) “Jo? It’s Jo, isn’t it? Jo Grant?”

JO
(amazed) “What?! Wow! No one’s called me that in a long time! It’s Mrs. Jo Jones now.” (puzzled; to Nyssa) “Wait, how do you know who I am?”

NYSSA
(gradually; to Jo) “It’s me! Nyssa! I’m Nyssa of Traken.”

A moment of silence ensues. Jo then begins to recognise Nyssa.

JO
“Hold on!” (gradually; realises; delighted) “Nyssa, it’s you! You’re Nyssa! Sweet lovely Nyssa of Traken!”

NYSSA
(pleased) “I knew I recognised you the moment I first saw you!”

JO
“Well, it only just occurred to me! But…? Oh it doesn’t matter. I mean…” (awed) “Oh darling! Come here! Hug!”

Jo immediately hugs Nyssa. Both Nyssa and Jo giggle with delight, whilst Billy is confused as well as Mr. Lloyd and Miss Gallo.

MR. LLOYD
“What’s all this?! What’s going on?”

BILLY
“Search me!”

Eventually Nyssa and Jo stop hugging, delighted to see each other.

JO
(pleased) “It’s really wonderful to see you again, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“I’m so glad you remembered me, Jo. I was afraid you wouldn’t.”

JO
(gradually; realises; to Billy) “And you Billy! Oh I remember you! Come here! I want to hug you as well!”

Jo immediately hugs Billy, to which Billy is astounded.

BILLY
(to Nyssa) “Nyssa, what’s going on? Who is this person?”

NYSSA
“Billy, it’s Jo Grant! You remember her? We shared an adventure with her on Lonmar!”

BILLY
“No, I…” (stops mid-stence; thinks; realises) “You mean…Lonmar and the robots! The five of us! You Nyssa; me; Ace; Victoria…and Jo!”

JO
“Yes! That’s ten out of ten, sunshine!”

NYSSA
“It really is her, Billy!”

BILLY
(amazed) “Oh Jo! It’s good to see you! I’m so sorry I didn’t recognise you!”

JO
“That’s alright, deary. I knew you’d remember me eventually.”

BILLY
“No, but…you’ve changed so much! You’re older than when we last met you!”

JO
“Well I should hope so, Billy. It’s been forty years since we saw each other.”

NYSSA
“Forty years?! Fascinating!”

JO
“How long has it been for you two then?”

BILLY
“Since Lonmar, about a year or so.”

JO
“A year?! That’s amazing!”

BILLY
“But you look great! I mean…you’re stunning!”

JO
“Thanks, Billy! That means a great deal.” (thrilled) “Oh I’ve missed you both so much! It’s fabulous meeting you here! And still young as ever, the two of you! Well, of course you’re young!”

Jo, Nyssa and Billy laugh, whilst Lloyd and Gallo are bemused.

MR. LLOYD
(interrupts; protests) “Now see here, Mrs. Jones! Would you kindly explain to me what this is all about?! Who are these people?!”

JO
“They’re my friends, Mr. Lloyd. From long ago. I haven’t seen them since.”

NYSSA
“Wait untill you see the Doctor. He’ll be pleased to see you, Jo.”

JO
“The Doctor?! The Doctor’s here in London?! But that’s marvellous! Where is he?”

SCENE #28 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
Back on Teruvada 16 in the king’s throne room in the citadel of Grondor, Bork bangs hard on the machine as he works on the circuitry. Tulu helps him whilst King Garnik and his son Ernpic watch impatiently.

GARNIK
“What’s taking you so long, Bork? What’s the problem now?”

BORK
(apologetically) “My humblest apologies, your majesty. It’s a little error in one of the circuits. Rest assured, normal service will resume.”

TULU
“This usually happens. We tend to get a fault in one of the circuits because of Bork’s tinkering. He doesn’t know much about technology, you see.”

BORK
(to Tulu) “That I categorically deny, dear.”

ERNPIC
(angrily) “Both of you are incompetent! You should have anticipated faults in your technology. And here you are wasting our time with delays.”

BORK
(reassuringly) “Please, your majesty! I have nearly finished!”

ERNPIC
(angrily) “Don’t address a son of Grondor in that manner! I am to be respected! The Prince of Nargdu is to be respected!”

GARNIK
(to Ernpic) “My son, do try and calm down!”

ERNPIC
(angrily) “Don’t tell me to calm down, father! We are a war-faring empire…”

GARNIK
(annoyed; interrupts) “Ernpic, I shall not ask you again!” (to Bork) “Now Bork!”

BORK
“Just one second, your majesty.”

Bork tinkers a bit more with the technology, before he eventually finishes and cheers with triumph.

BORK
(pleased) “Aha! There you are, you see! All fixed!”

TULU
(wryly) “Oh yeah, Bork! You do wonders with that contraption.”

BORK
(clears throat; to Garnik) “Now, your majesty. I’m about to switch to circuit three where a new form of entertainment takes place.”

Bork flicks a switch and the image on the machine’s screen changes.

BORK
“Here is the city of…Lonndonn. Somewhere on the planet called…Earth.”

GARNIK
“This is Earth where the humans are inhabiting. Tellurians as you called them.”

BORK
“Of course. There are two circuit areas containing Tellurian lifeforms. This is circuit three. The other is circuit six.”

TULU
(realises) “Hey Bork! Look! Here come the robots!”

Bork and Tulu look to the screen.

BORK
(thrilled) “Ah yes! This is the bit I like. Here on the screen are a bunch of giant robots stomping the city streets, causing death; destruction and chaos wherever they go.”

TULU
“Hmm. According to memorabilia collectors, Tellurians love sci-fi movies with robots terrorising the city. We thought it’d be good entertainment to put robots in a giant city like this.”

ERNPIC
“And the humans…get attacked by these creatures?”

BORK
“Indeed, your majesty! Male and female run around screaming and shouting as the robots chase and gun them with their weapons. That’s where it gets exciting. The prospect of whether they get killed by the robots or not. Action-packed adventures for all the family!”

GARNIK
“Fascinating.”

BORK
“Of course, I’d like to keep my stock without them getting harmed. So there aren’t many humans in this circuit. Only a mere handful. As you can see on the screen, there aren’t that many humans running around.”

TULU
(realises) “Hey Bork! Look! Someone’s on the screen now!”

BORK
“Rubbish, my dear. There can’t be.”

TULU
“No really, Bork! Look!”

Bork looks to see as Tulu points to a strange man in a cream-coloured coat on the screen.

BORK
(surprised) “I say! Where did he come from?”

GARNIK
“This is not part of the demonstration?”

BORK
(reassuringly) “Oh it’s nothing to worry about, your majesty! I just didn’t expect that man to appear. That’s the thing about this machine. It’s full of surprises!”

TULU
“I didn’t expect to see a man like that at all! With funny clothes and funny hat. He looks rather silly.” (coolly) “Even though he is a bit dishy if I say so myself. I fancy him.”

BORK
“You fancy anybody these days, Tulu.”

TULU
“Not half!” (to Garnik) “Why I even fancy your son, your majesty! He’s got the eye for the ladies, hasn’t he?”

ERNPIC
(bitterly) “Don’t push your luck, wrench!”

Tulu becomes quietly affronted whilst continuing to watch the screen.

SCENE #29 – EXT – PICCADILLY, LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile in London, the Doctor returns to Piccadilly Circus.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Nyssa; Billy?! It’s me! Sorry to have kept you waiting! I’ve…”

The Doctor then realises Nyssa and Billy aren’t here.

DOCTOR
(surprised) “Hmm. How interesting.”

The Doctor paces about a bit around the fountain to double check. Still no sign of Nyssa and Billy.

DOCTOR
“Hmm. I wonder what’s happened to them. They couldn’t have got lost.” (Pause) “Or perhaps they ran into danger like I did.” (worried) “I hope not.”

A moment of silence ensues whilst water trickles from the fountain.

DOCTOR
(thinks) “Let’s see now. Time for strategy.” (Pause) “I’ll make for the way they went from here at Piccadilly. North, wasn’t it? Or was it south?” (Pause; thinks) “No it was north, I remember! So therefore…north! Right!”

The Doctor ploughs on ahead, before stopping midway.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Now …which route did they take? Shaftsbury or Coventry?”

Suddenly, a noise comes from behind him. The Doctor ducks to hide behind the Piccadilly fountain.

DOCTOR
“That sounds like trouble. I wonder where it came from.”

The Doctor then watches as three giant robots appear.

DOCTOR
(groans; quietly) “Oh no! More giant robots! I thought I’d seen the last of them.”

The Doctor watches as the robots march and stomp about in Piccadilly Circus, with their weapons at the ready.

DOCTOR
(quietly) “They must be patrolling the area. Well, let’s just hope they won’t see me behind this fountain. Maybe not the most convenient hiding places, but still.”

The Doctor considers his options, as the robots keep patrolling the area. Inspiration soon kicks in to give the Doctor an idea.

DOCTOR
(realises) “On the other hand, if I conceal myself long enough dodging robots as they pass by…I may eventually get behind one of them and hitch a ride to wherever they’re going.” (Pause) “Yes. That might do the trick. Question is…how does one approach such a strategy?”

The Doctor watches, carefully concealing and dodging behind various hiding places from the robots.

Arh the Tardis has materialized inside the machine? But how come Jo there Hmmmm intriguing arc this very fast paced, i sense tension between father & son of this alien race Garnik & his son Ernpic, i wonder if he’ll kill his dad & force Bork to use the machine as a weapon & freeing the Doctor & Co from the machine?

Enjoying this story Tim, it’s just what the Doctor ordered, no doubt Corporal James Darby will turn up & save the day lol.

The Doctor and the others don’t realise they’ve materialised inside the machine, do they?

I’m glad I got you intrigued about Jo being there in London. Did you like the reunion between her, Nyssa and Billy in this chapter?

Very pleased you find this arc intriguing and fast-paced. There is tension between King Garnik and his son Prince Ernpic. There’s a lot more to it and their Nargdu race than you realise. Interesting how you’ve come up with the theory that Ernpic will kill his dad and force Bork to use the machine as a weapon. It’ll be interesting to read your reaction to what happens later on in the story.

Glad you’re enjoying this story so far, Simon. Hope you’ll enjoy more.

      Tim. 🙂
