‘City of Monsters’, Part Three, Chapter 11

11. “Phase One In; Phase Two Out.”

SCENE #125 – INT – PRISON CELL AREA, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the prison cell area of Teruvada 16, Bork, after much persuasion, gets to unlock the prison cell doors with Tulu’s help to release the Doctor and Jo. A buzzing sound echoes as Bork applies the key to open the cell doors.

JO
(anxiously) “Come on, hurry! The guards will soon discover you’re helping us to escape!”

TULU
“Oh no worry about the guards. We knocked them out with a potent sleep.”

DOCTOR
“You Lurmans think of everything, don’t you?”

TULU
“We didn’t drug them. It was just an incentive to help them go to sleep. Nothing more than that.”

BORK
(grumbles) “You know, I’m not sure this is the right key I’m using.”

Eventually, the lock opens and Bork switches off the electronic key.

BORK
(cheers) “Ah! It worked! The doors should be open!”

Bork and Tulu stand back as the Doctor and Jo push the door open to let themselves out.

TULU
“And they are! Well done, Bork!”

BORK
“Yes, I do surprise even myself.”

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Bork! Thank you for freeing us!”

JO
“Which way to the throne room now then?” (to Bork; Tulu) “Do you two know the way back?”

TULU
“We think so. We just followed the sign posts.”

DOCTOR
“We have to make sure we avoid being seen by the king and his son the prince on our way back to the throne room.”

BORK
“What are you thinking of doing when you get back there, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Hopefully get back inside that miniscope of yours to rescue Nyssa and Billy. And I shall need your help to do that. Do you still have manuals and data disks for the machine, Bork?”

BORK
“I have a bag of odds and ends connected to the scope, Doctor. But generally yes, I still have disks and manuals.”

DOCTOR
“Excellent. I shall like to have a look at those. And hopefully take some special equipment out from the TARDIS to help get back inside the miniscope.”

JO
“Just like last time before?”

DOCTOR
(to Jo) “Just like last time before, Jo.” (to Bork) “Come on, Bork. Back to the throne room we go. You and Tulu lead the way.”

BORK
“Yes Doctor! Just as you say!”

Bork and Tulu lead the way as they; the Doctor and Jo head out of the prison cell area to make their way back to the king’s throne room.

SCENE #126 – INT – INTERROGATION ROOM, OGRON BASE, – DAY, AFTERNOON
Inside the Ogron base in New York, Nyssa; Billy and Corporal James are brought into the interrogation room after being arrested.

BILLY
(whispers; to Nyssa) “Well, Nyssa? How do you propose we get out of this one? The odds seem to be against us, don’t they?”

NYSSA
(whispers; to Billy) “Trust me, Billy. I’m working on something. Let me know if you have any suggestions and I’ll be happy to listen.”

They’re then prodded by an Ogron behind them.

OGRON #1
“No talking! Sit down!”

Nyssa, Billy and Corporal James are forced to sit down as the Ogron leaders, Kharshak and Wrarshak, begin to interrogate them.

WRARSHAK
(aggressively) “Tell us why you’re here! Why did you come?!”

CORPORAL JAMES
“If you don’t want us here, we’ll be happy to be on our way. If you’ll just let us [go…”]

OGRON #1
(interrupts; barks) “Shut up, human!”

The Ogron smacks Corporal James on the head. Corporal James reacts in pain.

CORPORAL JAMES
(gradually; in pain) “Well, your masters wanted to know about us. I couldn’t help not give an answer, could I?”

KHARSHAK
(grunts) “You kidnapped us! Us Ogrons! You keep us in city against our will!”

BILLY
(protests) “This hasn’t got anything to do with us! We’re prisoners just as you are!”

NYSSA
“We’re trying a find a way out so that we can rescue our friends. If you would help us find…”

Wrarshak shakes Nyssa aggressively.

WRARSHAK
(angrily) “You keep us prisoners! We want out! You will set us free!”

BILLY
(protests) “Hey! Leave her alone, big guy! What she’s saying is the truth!”

Wrarshak smacks Billy. Billy cries in pain.

NYSSA
(aghast) “How dare you?! You just smacked my boyfriend! This isn’t an interrogation! It’s a mockery of it!”

KHARSHAK
“You will answer questions! From us Ogrons!”

BILLY
“We have been answering your questions, bozos! You’re just not listening!”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Don’t bother. These Ogrons don’t understand the meaning of reason. They’re stupid for that.”

KHARSHAK
“We get answers and we want answers now!”

NYSSA
“We refuse to answer anymore questions if you treat us this way! Just let us go and we’ll trouble you no more!”

WRARSHAK
(grunts) “No! You will not escape us! Not again! There is no escape!”

Just then, a Drashig howls nearby. Nyssa and Billy shudder.

BILLY
“Nyssa! It’s them again! The Drashigs!”

NYSSA
“They’ve followed our scent! They’ve found us!”

KHARSHAK
(barks) “Who interrupts?! Who goes there?!”

In response, a Drashig bursts through the walls and breaks into the Ogron interrogation room. The Drashig howls and screams as it approaches the Ogrons.

WRARSHAK
(panics) “Big beast! We under attack! Big beast attacks us!”

KHARSHAK
“Prepare arms! Prepare to fire!”

The Ogrons draw their weapons whilst the Drashig screams and howls, slithering towards them.

KHARSHAK
“Shoot it down! FIRE!!!”

The Ogrons fire as they try to shoot the Drashig down. But it’s no use as the Ogrons keep on firing whilst the Drashig remains undamaged. The Drashig continues to scream and howl away.

WRARSHAK
(grunts) “No good! No good! Monster resists our weapons! Monster not killed!”

The Drashig lunges forward as Wrarshak and some Ogrons shriek in fear and terror. They get picked up and are immediately eaten by the Drashig. Nyssa and Billy witness this.

BILLY
(horrified) “That’s just…that was unbelievable!”

NYSSA
(horrified) “It ate them! That Drashig ate those Ogrons up! That’s monstrous!”

KHARSHAK
(roars) “Fire again! Fire!!! FIRE!!!”

The Ogrons continue to fire their weapons whilst the Drashig continues to howl and scream, unaffected by the shots. More Drashigs soon entering the Ogron interrogation room as well as the base.

BILLY
“Nyssa, look! There’s more of them coming in! They’re going to gobble us within minutes!”

NYSSA
“This is our chance! We must get away!”

CORPORAL JAMES
“We’ll have to head deeper into the Ogron base. Deep down. That’s the only way to get away from these mongrels.”

NYSSA
“Then that’s what we’ll do. Come on! Deeper into the Ogron base we go!”

BILLY
“And more running.”

NYSSA
“Yes. Unfortunately. You’ll have to help me to keep up, Billy.”

Billy obliges as he; Nyssa and Corporal James make their escape and run out of the Ogrons’ interrogation room. The Ogrons keep on firing their weapons whilst the Drashigs are unaffected by the shots they receive.

KHARSHAK
(grunts) “More! More come! More come for us! Flee! Flee for your lives!”

The Ogrons flee whilst the Drashigs slither their way into the base, searching for their prey as they go.

SCENE #127 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the king’s throne room in the Grondor citadel on Teruvada 16, the Doctor; Jo; Bork and Tulu enter as they approach the miniscope.

DOCTOR
“Ah! Here we are! Safe and sound in the throne room!”

BORK
(relieved) “There’s the miniscope there, Doctor. Unattended. Let’s hope nobody’s mucked about with it.”

DOCTOR
“Me too. Or else Nyssa and Billy’s lives will be more at stake.”

The Doctor approaches the miniscope as he begins to examine it.

DOCTOR
“Just bear me a minute while I put on my glasses.”

The Doctor puts his glasses on as he examines the machine carefully. Jo comes beside him to watch.

JO
“Since when have you ever worn glasses, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(shrewdly) “Since before I joined U.N.I.T and met you, Jo. And since I left U.N.I.T. afterwards.”

JO
“You know sometimes you don’t make sense, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Comforting, isn’t it? Mind you, I don’t really need them. Just helps to reassure me how clever I am.”

JO
“I thought you were clever when I had to pass the test tubes to you as your new assistant at U.N.I.T.”

DOCTOR
“Ah, but you didn’t pass so many test tubes to me in those days did you, Jo.”

JO
“No I didn’t. That’s perfectly true.”

DOCTOR
“Now let’s see about this machine.”

Bork and Tulu then come round beside the Doctor.

TULU
“Can you rescue your friends, Doctor?”

BORK
“And the rest of my livestock?”

DOCTOR
(shocked) “Livestock?! Bork, you should never have had possession of this machine in the first place! It’s cruel doing this to lifeforms who have existence in this universe!”

BORK
“Sorry, Doctor. Politics aren’t my thing.”

The Doctor ignores Bork and continues to examine the miniscope.

JO
“How are you going to go about this, Doctor? What did you do when you rescued me last time?”

DOCTOR
“I’m not sure. I can’t remember…” (Pause; realises) “Oh yes, wait a minute.”

The Doctor opens up a panel in the machine and takes a look at the circuitry.

DOCTOR
“Ah yes! I thought so. I knew it had something to do with the circuitry.” (to Bork) “Bork, you know those manuals and odd ends you mentioned having earlier?”

BORK
“Yes Doctor, what about them?”

DOCTOR
“I shall need your help to trigger the settings. Have you got a blue or a green disc of sorts?”

BORK
“Yes, I have actually. It’s in amongst that bag of pocket jumble.”

DOCTOR
“Would you mind fetching it for me please?”

BORK
“Certainly.”

Bork goes off to fetch the green or blue disc from his bag of pocket jumble.

TULU
“Is there something wrong with Bork’s machine, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, I’m afraid so. Apparently the power cells are beginning to overload. Due to a result of some troublesome Drashigs entering parts of the miniscope’s circuitry when crossing into different environments.”

JO
“And the Drashigs are still chasing Nyssa and Billy wherever they go whether it’s London or New York.”

TULU
“So the system’s packing up as we speak.”

DOCTOR
“I’m afraid so. But I know what the problem is. The Omega circuit in this contraption is damaged. Now I intend to connect that circuit to my TARDIS console unit as the master link. Thus allowing me to reprogram the scope and adapt it for me to gain entry back into it.”

JO
“So that we can rescue Nyssa and Billy and get everyone and every monster inside that thing back to their original space-time coordinates.”

DOCTOR
“Spot on, Jo.”

TULU
“Will this…blue box of yours be able to shrink you to size back in the scope’s compression field then?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. I don’t intend to use ‘Alice’s Drink Me’ potion to get me back inside. But I have some equipment inside to help me switch into the scope and back out again once I’ve rescued my friends.”

JO
“And me. To help you and me switch into the scope and back out again.”

DOCTOR
“You and me, Jo?”

JO
“Yes! I’m coming with you.”

DOCTOR
“Oh no, Jo. Not this time. You’re staying out here where you can be safe.”

JO
“I’m coming with you, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“And I’m declining your offer, Jo.”

JO
“And I’m adamant about it.”

DOCTOR
“There’s nothing I can say to persuade you otherwise, Jo?”

JO
“Nope. Absolutely not.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Very well Jo, if you insist. But I warn you. It’s very dangerous.”

JO
“I know that, Doctor. Remember?”

Bork returns with a green disc as he gives it to the Doctor.

BORK
“I think this is the disc you wanted, Doctor. It’s green and bit rusty but I think it should work.”

The Doctor takes the disc from Bork and looks at it.

DOCTOR
(gradually; to Bork) “Yes! Yes, this is one. Thank you Bork.” (to Bork; Tulu) “Now, you two! Stay out here and wait for me and Jo whilst we go and get ourselves ready.”

JO
(eagerly) “Right, Doctor. Off back into the miniscope we go!”

DOCTOR
“Come into the TARDIS with me, Jo.”

JO
(puzzled) “The TARDIS?”

DOCTOR
“There’s something I want to collect from my ship and I shall need your help.”

JO
“Oh. Right.” (Pause; thrilled) “Oh it’s been so long since I’ve been in that TARDIS of yours, Doctor. I wonder how much decoration you’ve done to it.”

Jo follows the Doctor inside the TARDIS whilst Bork and Tulu wait for them.

SCENE #128 – INT – STORE ROOM, OGRON BASE, – DAY, AFTERNOON
Meanwhile with Nyssa; Billy and Corporal James, they continue to run in the Ogron base as they enter the store room. The Drashigs’ screams and howls echo nearby. Nyssa; Billy and Corporal James pause for breath after so much running.

BILLY
“If those Drashigs weren’t so bloodthirsty and can hunt us by scent, this room would be a good hiding place.”

CORPORAL JAMES
(bitterly) “Yeah, well it isn’t. So tough. We must get out of the city!”

NYSSA
“Look around you! There aren’t any windows! And I can’t seem to find a ventilation shaft anywhere along these walls!”

BILLY
“I still can’t believe those Drashigs managed to eat up those Ogrons so quickly and ferociously!”

CORPORAL JAMES
(impatiently) “Will you two stop your nattering and help me out here! We must get ourselves out of this building before those monsters come!”

Corporal James feels his way along the walls, searching for a way out. Nyssa and Billy meanwhile spot something on the floor.

BILLY
“Hey look! We’ve found a way out! Another junction point, right?”

NYSSA
“Yes! A metal plate covering a hatchway downwards into the inner workings of the machine!”

BILLY
“That’s a stroke of luck! We can get back down now!”

Nyssa and Billy get down on their hands and knees to check it out. They’re soon re-joined by Corporal James.

CORPORAL JAMES
“You found something? A way out?”

NYSSA
“Yes. And like Billy said, it’s lucky we were able to find it so easily.”

BILLY
“Ah, but there’s a problem. The plate’s magnetically sealed, remember? We can’t unlock it unless we have the magnetic core extractor.”

NYSSA
“Which we don’t have. That’s annoying.”

BILLY
“Couldn’t you make a makeshift device with your technical skills to demagnetise this thing, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I would if I have the components and the time to make it, Billy.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Well, time is what we don’t have. Stand back, you two!”

Corporal James takes out a charged grenade from his jacket. He takes out the valve and it begins to tick away. He throws it onto the metal plate, startling Nyssa and Billy as they stand back.

BILLY
“What are you doing?! Are you trying to blow us up?”

NYSSA
(protests) “You can’t! You’ll kill us all in here and damaged the system’s circuitry!”

CORPORAL JAMES
(blithely) “Then I suggest you get back behind the crates! Come on!”

Corporal James runs over behind the crates whilst Nyssa and Billy watch the grenade sparkle away.

BILLY
“We’ve got put it out! Put it out before it kills us!”

NYSSA
“It’s too late, Billy! Corporal James is right! We have to get behind one of the crates! They’ll protect us from the blast!”

BILLY
“But Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“Now Billy! Come on”

Nyssa drags Billy away as they get behind the crates with Corporal James.

CORPORAL JAMES
(shouts) “Get down!”

Suddenly, there’s a huge explosion as the grenade blows up a hole in the floor where the metal plate was. A moment of tension ensues. Flames flicker and sparkle, as Nyssa; Billy and Corporal James come out of the hiding place to see the blown-up hole in the floor.

NYSSA
“It’s over! Your grenade’s blown a hole in the floor!”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Yes! That’s done it!”

BILLY
“It certainly has. The ladder’s gone through the hatchway. You blew that up as well as the plate on the floor.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Have no fear! Corporal James is here with some rope!”

Corporal James proves it as he shows the rope to Nyssa and Billy.

NYSSA
“You had the rope in your coat pocket the whole time?”

CORPORAL JAMES
“I’m a corporal of the space fleet! It’s best to be prepared!”

Howls from the Drashigs and grunts from the Ogrons echo nearby.

BILLY
“Nyssa, those Drashigs and Ogrons are getting here quick!”

NYSSA
“Quick, Corporal! Lower the rope into the hatchway. Then we can escape.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Doing it now.”

With that, Corporal James lowers the rope down into the hatchway for him; Nyssa and Billy to climb down. Eventually, they all get down into the hatchway via the rope before the Drashigs and the Ogrons can enter to attack and interrupt them.

SCENE #129 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back in the king’s throne room of the Grondor citadel, the Doctor applies the equipment he and Jo have collected from the TARDIS to the miniscope. Bork and Tulu watch them, intrigued.

JO
“I’m still amazed by how much you’ve done to that TARDIS of yours. It doesn’t matter what it looks like. It still feels and smells the same like the old TARDIS was. I almost feel like wanting to join you for the ride again even though I’m not allowed to.”

DOCTOR
“Time for nostalgia later, Jo. Our first concern is to get back inside the miniscope.”

The Doctor finishes with setting up the TARDIS equipment to the miniscope as he turns to Bork and Tulu.

DOCTOR
(to Bork) “Right, Bork. I’m going to set myself and Jo back into this contraption of yours. Can you manage to handle the switches whilst we’re inside?”

BORK
“Doctor, are you sure this is good idea? I mean with those Drashigs, Ogrons and Autons…”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “No time for debates. This is the only way.”

JO
“There must be some other way though, Doctor. I want to save Nyssa and Billy, but surely we can…”

DOCTOR
“No, Jo. There isn’t time.”

TULU
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, Doctor. I’ll remember what Bork has to do in case he forgets.”

BORK
(protests) “I never do such a thing!”

DOCTOR
“Good, good. Now listen.” (to Bork) “See these two switches here, Bork?”

BORK
“Yes I see them. Can I just mention how very un-insulated this equipment is.”

DOCTOR
“Well, don’t touch any bare metal then. Now pay attention!” (Pause) “This switch here is Phase One for getting me and Jo in. This other switch here is Phase Two. That’s to get me and Jo out and hopefully with Nyssa and Billy.”

BORK
“Got that. Phase One in; Phase Two out.”

DOCTOR
“That’s right. Now don’t touch Phase Two unless it’s absolutely necessary. Give me and Jo all the time we need by all means, but don’t risk getting us out again. Otherwise we may never get the chance to go back before the scope blows up.”

JO
“Can it really do that, Doctor? Blow up I mean?”

DOCTOR
“The power cells in the machine are overloading, remember? So it’s vital we find Nyssa and Billy before anything terrible happens.” (to Bork) “Now, Bork. Do you understand?”

BORK
“I understand. Don’t touch Phase Two unless absolutely necessary. I got it.”

TULU
(reassuringly) “Don’t worry, Doctor. I’ll make sure Bork remembers.”

DOCTOR
(to Tulu) “Thank you, Miss Tulu.” (to Jo) “Ready, Jo?”

JO
“Ready when you are, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Right.” (Pause) “Now Bork. Stand by for Phase One.”

Bork grabs onto the Phase One switch.

BORK
“Standing by, Doctor.”

At that moment, King Garnik and Prince Ernpic enter with some soldiers to see what’s happening. They catch the Doctor, Jo, Bork and Tulu out.

GARNIK
“What is going on here?!”

ERNPIC
(enraged) “Those two Tellurians! They’re here in the throne room!”

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Now, Bork! NOW!!!”

Bork presses the Phase One switch in an instant…

DOCTOR
“Hold on, Jo!”

JO
(uncomfortable) “Doctor, I feel funny.”

…as the Doctor and Jo are immediately transported out of thin air and get sent back into the miniscope.

ERNPIC
(enraged) “They’ve escaped, father! They’ve escaped!”

GARNIK
(barks) “Soldiers! Seize those two!”

The soldiers immediately arrest Bork and Tulu, taking them away from the machine.

TULU
(to soldiers) “‘Ere, get your meat hooks off of me!”

Garnik and Ernpic approach Bork and Tulu.

GARNIK
“Where are those two Tellurians?! Where have they gone, Bork?!”

ERNPIC
“Answer him! ANSWER MY FATHER!!!”

BORK
(stammers) “I…I-I-I don’t know. They’ve disappeared.”

ERNPIC
“You tell us where they’ve gone or I’ll smash your head with axes!”

TULU
“They’ve gone back inside the machine. The miniscope.”

GARNIK
“You two helped them escape?!”

TULU
(protests) “You two arrested them without good reason. They wanted to save their friends. We did them an invaluable service.”

ERNPIC
“I knew you two weren’t to be trusted! I knew it! I just knew it!”

GARNIK
(to soldiers) “Soldiers, take these two away to their prison cells. They shall suffer imprisonment by taking that Doctor and his woman friend’s cell.”

The soldiers obey as they escort Bork and Tulu away. Bork and Tulu whisper quietly whilst they’re being escorted to their prison cells.

BORK
(whispers) “Well, at least they didn’t smash up the Doctor’s equipment. We can get the Doctor and his friends out using the Phase Two switch.”

TULU
(whispers; wryly) “Oh brilliant plan, Bork! How are we supposed to do that whilst we’re in our prison cells? Answer me that!”

Bork says nothing as he and Tulu get taken away to be escorted out of the king’s throne room.

SCENE #130 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
In the inner workings of the miniscope, Nyssa, Billy and Corporal James walk down a corridor to find a way out of the machine.

BILLY
“I think we got lucky this time, Nyssa. I can’t hear any Drashigs or Ogrons following us.”

NYSSA
“Don’t trust to luck this time, Billy. They’re following us. It takes time for them to catch up.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“What are we doing here?! Of all places, what are we doing here?!”

NYSSA
“Trying to find a way out of course. We need to get back to London to retrace our steps, remember?”

CORPORAL JAMES
“I still can’t believe we’re in a place like this! What is all this gadgetry and technology I’m seeing here?”

BILLY
“The inside of a perfectly powerful and complicated machine. A…miniscope, the Doctor called it. Wasn’t it, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes. And it shouldn’t exist, according to the Doctor. Where we are is the junction point between various miniaturised environments.”

BILLY
“Like the wood between the worlds in ‘The Magician’s Nephew’.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“I’ve had enough of this place! I shouldn’t even be with you! I hadn’t intended to escape with you two youngsters! I’m off on my own!”

BILLY
“You’re not scared, are you?”

NYSSA
“We need you to stay here, Corporal.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Scared?! I’m never scared! I’m a space fleet corporal! And I shall do what I like! I’ll make my own way back if it’s all the same to you!”

NYSSA
“You’ll get lost in this machine! Believe me, it’s better you stay with us.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“I don’t believe you though! I’m better off in charge of my own destiny! You take the high road and I’ll take the low road! Goodbye, you two!”

NYSSA
“Corporal James, please!”

Nyssa tries to stop Corporal James by grabbing his arm before he pushes her off.

CORPORAL JAMES
“Get your hands off me! I’ll go my own way! I’m off!”

Corporal James walks off down the corridor in the other direction of the inner workings. Nyssa looks anxiously on.

NYSSA
(calls) “Corporal James, come back!”

BILLY
“Leave him, Nyssa. If he wants to be on his own, then that’s his funeral.”

NYSSA
“We can’t leave him, Billy. He’ll get killed by those Drashigs if he goes on his own down that corridor.”

BILLY
“He’s more experienced at this sort of thing. He’s a space corporal, isn’t he?”

NYSSA
“We have to go after him. Come on!”

Nyssa heads off with Billy eventually following her as they make their way down the corridor to catch up with Corporal James. They soon realise that he’s disappeared out of sight.

BILLY
“Well, he’s gone now.”

NYSSA
“He can’t have gone far. He must have turned around the corner somewhere.”

BILLY
“Oh really? Which one do you want to pick? There’s lots of corners about this place, see?”

Just then, a growling Drashig echoes in the inner workings. Nyssa and Billy become afraid.

NYSSA
(afraid) “The Drashigs have entered the inner workings. Just as before.”

BILLY
(afraid) “They’re getting close. We have to move on, Nyssa. Not let them catch up with us!”

NYSSA
“I only hope Corporal James will be alright.” (Pause) “Come on Billy, you’re right! Let’s move on before the Drashigs find us again!”

Nyssa and Billy take each other’s hands as they move off back down the corridor to find their way back to London. Meanwhile, Corporal James, who’s been hiding out of sight, breathes a sigh of relief as he comes out of an a nearby alcove in the corridor.

CORPORAL JAMES
(relieved) “Thank goodness they’re gone. I don’t want two kids to look after me whilst I save my own skin.” (Pause) “Now…which way is the way out?”

With that, Corporal James moves off to find a way out down another corridor. The Drashigs’ distant screams and howls echo closer.

SCENE #131 – EXT – REGENT STREET, CENTRAL LONDON – DAY, MORNING
In London, on Regent Street just off Piccadilly Circus, the Doctor and Jo lie unconscious on the ground. The Doctor wakes up first, feeling groggy as he regains consciousness. He goes over to Jo and tries to wake her up.

DOCTOR
“Jo? Jo, can you hear me? Jo?”

Jo slowly wakes up as she regains consciousness too.

JO
(groans) “Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “It’s alright Jo. You’ll soon be alright in a minute. We’ve both been transferred back into the miniscope. The effects of transference will wear off shortly.”

JO
“Where are we? What is this place?”

DOCTOR
“Don’t you recognise it, Jo? We’re back in London!”

JO
(realises) “Oh yes! Yes, I recognise it now! This is Regent Street, isn’t it? We’re sitting on the edge of Regent Street.”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Just off Piccadilly Circus. Close to where Nyssa, Billy and I left the TARDIS upon our arrival.”

JO
“Have…have you seen them? Nyssa and Billy?”

DOCTOR
“Not yet. I’ve only just got up. Come on! Let’s get on our feet! Here, let me help you up from the floor.”

The Doctor helps Jo up to her feet as they take in their surroundings.

JO
“Doctor? How are we going to find Nyssa and Billy in a city the size of London? They may not even be here. They maybe in New York.”

DOCTOR
“That I haven’t worked out yet I’m afraid, Jo. If I know Nyssa and Billy, they’ll probably be trying to reach the inner workings and retracing their steps back to here. At least I hope so.”

JO
“So you think we should go and make for the inner clock workings of the miniscope do you, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. The thing is…how do we get back into the inner workings from here?”

JO
(thinks) “Same way as we did before. Go through the London underground in Oxford Circus.”

DOCTOR
“And Oxford Street’s up north where we are, isn’t it?”

JO
“Yes! We’ll get to the miniscope inner workings in no time.”

DOCTOR
“Provided there aren’t any monsters to block our path.” (Pause) “Right then! Let’s make for Oxford Circus as we walk!”

The Doctor and Jo make their way northwards as they walk to reach Oxford Street and then Oxford Circus.

JO
“Doctor, those two people Bork and Tulu. Do you trust them?”

DOCTOR
“I hope so. Because they’re our chance of getting us all out of here alive. Let’s hope they haven’t got into too much trouble with the mad Nargdu king and his prince.”

The Doctor and Jo walk on as they make their way through Regent Street.

SCENE #132 – INT – PRISON CELL AREA, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the prison cell area within the citadel of Grondor on Teruvada 16, Bork and Tulu find themselves imprisoned after having been arrested. They sit about whilst they’re imprisoned in their cell.

TULU
(shrewdly) “Well, this is nice, isn’t it? We still haven’t been paid our first set of credit bars yet. Doesn’t seem like we’re going to get them now.”

BORK
“I’ll never live this down. This is bound to ruin my reputation. Those Nargdu pests will spread lies to me saying that I’m not to be trusted in terms of entertainment value. As if I’ve got a poor rating!”

TULU
“I told you these Teruvadans were no good, Bork. I told you we should have got away when we should.”

BORK
“Yes Tulu, so you said. I hope you’re not blaming me for all that’s happened.”

TULU
“Well if you had listened to me and stopped when I told you we should have stopped with the Doctor and his friends inside, we wouldn’t even be here!”

BORK
(glumly) “And there’s gratitude for you.”

TULU
“Oh I wish I was back with the All Star Dance Company. Things were much simpler when I was there.”

BORK
“Oh yes? Well, just who brought you out of that misery bunch of hoofers and got you into the whirlwind of business? Answer me that! Who made sure you were well-fed and nurtured when entertaining in space was on for measures? Who?”

TULU
“You did, Bork. Of course.”

BORK
“Well, now…that’s me being generous. And you don’t get many showmen who are that generous these days!”

TULU
“Doesn’t help with the fact that we’re both locked up in a cell, does it?”

BORK
(sighs) “I hope the Doctor and his friend Jo are finding their friends alright. I can’t bear to think I’m not helping him and his friends get out. Even if it does sacrifice all I hold dear in that miniscope.”

TULU
“There must be way out of this! We can’t stay cooped up in this cell forever!”

Moment of silence. Bork then fumbles in his bag of pocket jumble.

BORK
(thinks) “Perhaps there is a way we can get out, Tulu.”

TULU
“What do you mean?”

BORK
“See this bag here? Neither the guards; the good king and prince took that from me. Thought it was useless. Perhaps I can use this to an advantage.”

TULU
“There’s nothing in that bag that can help us, Bork. It’s just a pile of trash.”

BORK
“We’ll see; we’ll see.” (Pause) “Now help me look through these knickknacks and bric-a-bracs we got here. Perhaps they’ll give us the answers we need on how to create a gadget to get us out of here.”

Bork empties his bag of ‘bric-a-bracs’ and ‘knickknacks’ as he and Tulu begin to construct a way of escaping from their prison.

SCENE #133 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Back in the inner workings of the miniscope, Nyssa and Billy are further into the machine than ever before. They’re far away from the Drashigs that are still catching up with them in the distance, howling and screaming.

BILLY
“Say Nyssa? Have we come this way before? I don’t recognise it.”

NYSSA
“No, neither do I. I think we might have come too far.”

BILLY
“Well, at least we’re far away from those wide-mouthed fanged things.”

NYSSA
“We can’t put off our guard, Billy. We have to find an escape route.”

BILLY
“Well, couldn’t we try any of these metal hatches? At least we’ll be getting somewhere than here.”

NYSSA
“We’ll probably find ourselves in an environment that’s hostile to us. And we’ll probably be dead within minutes.”

BILLY
“But then again we might not. It might be London hopefully.”

NYSSA
“And if it isn’t?”

BILLY
(gradually) “Then we’ll just have to try and find another hatch.”

NYSSA
“We can’t go through all that again, Billy. We can’t keep going around in circles. We must find somewhere that says ‘exit’ from this wretched machine we’re in. Even if aspects of it are appealing on some level. Like this technology for example.” (Pause; realises) “Billy, are you listening to me?”

Billy isn’t listening to Nyssa as he spots something on the floor and makes his way towards it.

BILLY
“Nyssa, look!”

Nyssa comes over to join Billy as they both see a metal plate on the floor.

NYSSA
“It’s a metal plate, Billy. Just like the others.”

BILLY
“Yeah but there’s something different about this one. All of the others hatches are on the walls of these corridors, aren’t they? This one isn’t. It’s situated on this floor.”

NYSSA
(realises) “Yes, I see what you mean. And from the architecture and configuration, we must at the very corner of where this machine is. It turns a sharp corner to the left.”

BILLY
“So that means we must getting close to an escape route that leads downwards into the machine and out again.”

NYSSA
“I wish I knew for certain.” (sighs) “Oh if only we had the Doctor’s magnetic core extractor on us, we could unseal that hatch instantly.”

BILLY
“Yes. A shame for us the Doctor and Jo were taken away so abruptly. I hope they’re alright wherever they are.”

Drashig screams and howls echo from nearby, making Nyssa and Billy anxious.

NYSSA
“Well, we’ll just have to use our initative and what limited resources we have on hand. Now, what have we got that we can use to unseal the hatch magnetically?”

BILLY
(thinks) “You need something magnetic to start off with don’t you, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(laughs) “I wouldn’t mind that.”

With that, Billy takes out his camera from his pocket and offers it to Nyssa.

BILLY
“Will something in this do, Nyssa?”

Nyssa sees the camera and takes it from Billy.

NYSSA
“Your camera? Yes! That should do fine. The magnetic latch inside should help with starting things. And also a few odds and ends.” (Pause) “You don’t mind if I dismantle your camera do you, Billy dear?”

BILLY
“No, go ahead.”

NYSSA
“Thanks.”

Nyssa gets started on dismantling Billy’s camera as she takes out a screwdriver from her pocket and begins to unscrew the screws.

BILLY
(surprised) “You had a screwdriver on you this whole time?”

NYSSA
(absorbed) “Of course! Once I have this camera open, I’ll need to conduct a few tests before actually opening the hatch to be sure of what I’m doing. I also have another pair of tools to do the trick on constructing a make-shift key.”

The Drashigs howl and scream nearby as they approach ever closer.

BILLY
“I hope you can build that key of yours in time before the Drashigs get here, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Me too, Billy. Me too.”

Nyssa continues with the task at hand whilst Billy watches apprehensively beside her. The Drashings howl and scream in the distance.

SCENE #134 – EXT – OXFORD STREET, CENTRAL LONDON – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, the Doctor and Jo arrive in Oxford Street in London. They make their way to Oxford Circus in search for Nyssa and Billy.

JO
“Here we are in Oxford Street! We’re getting close now, Doctor.” (Pause) “This was where I met that dreadful Huxley and got embroiled with Iris Wildthyme. Do you remember that time, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“How could I forgot, Jo? Seeing you as an older woman really made my hearts beat. Knowing that you still remembered me after all those years.”

JO
“And how do you feel now?”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(gradually; uncomfortable) “Let’s get to Oxford Circus and find Nyssa and Billy, shall we?”

The Doctor and Jo continue walking as another moment of silence ensues between them.

JO
“Does it disturb you, Doctor? To see an older me like this?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “It’s not seeing you being old that troubles me, Jo. Seeing you after all these years makes me realise how much I’ve moved on. It never occurred to me I’d look back and see the ones I’ve left behind. The friends I love and care for. It’s difficult for me.”

JO
“But you have to move on, don’t you? Like I have.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. And you’ve done well for yourself, haven’t you? A mother and a grandmother. I didn’t think you and Cliff would last that long.”

JO
“You never thought I would leave you did you, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“No. I didn’t want to admit it at the time. I wanted to deny you leaving because…because I cherished your company. I’d grown so close to you that I didn’t want it to end.”

JO
“Me neither. When I first met you, you became rather cross with me.”

DOCTOR
“Yes for spoiling my experiments. But I got used to you. To your clumsy ways and delightful giddiness.”

Both laugh.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “You can always come with us if you like, Jo. You; me; Nyssa and Billy. You can travel with us for a bit.”

JO
(astonished) “You want me to come with you? To travel in the TARDIS?”

DOCTOR
“If that’s what you want? I know it’s asking a lot of you but…I really have missed you. And I get you back home in time for tea with Cliff whenever you like.”

Another moment of silence.

JO
(gradually) “Doctor, it is very nice of you to ask me this. And I’m grateful. I have enjoyed the times we’ve shared. You; me; the Brigadier; Mike Yates and Sergeant Benton. But…”

Just then, they’re interrupted as something crashes nearby. The Doctor and Jo look to see as someone runs towards them.

JO
(surprised) “Oh! I see someone! He just came out from around the corner!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “It’s James! Corporal James Darby! Perhaps he can give us some help.”

The Doctor and Jo make their way towards him, as Corporal James runs to meet them. He puffs and pants out from breath, after having run for some time.

CORPORAL JAMES
(pants) “Doctor? So…you and your friend got back in here?”

DOCTOR
“Nothing can keep me away from rescuing my two young friends, Nyssa and Billy. You haven’t seen them, have you? And how did you know I escaped before?”

JO
“You’re out of breath, Corporal James! Have you been running?”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Of course! I’ve just had a dodgy escape from some Drashings! In that crazy complex of tunnels!”

JO
(astonished; aghast; to Corporal James) “They’re in the inner workings?! The Drashigs?!” (to Doctor) “Doctor…?”

DOCTOR
(to Corporal James) “Were Nyssa and Billy in the miniscope workings with you by any chance, Corporal?”

CORPORAL JAMES
“Of course they were. But I left them. They’re still in the inner workings. Trying to find a way out. And good luck to them!”

JO
(shocked) “What?! You left Nyssa and Billy behind to be caught by those Drashigs as they hunt their scent?! What kind of a man are you?!”

CORPORAL JAMES
“The kind of man who survives! I’m not having my neck torn out by those things, am I?!”

DOCTOR
(apprehensively) “James, tell me! Where is the hatch you came out of when you left Nyssa and Billy?”

CORPORAL JAMES
(backs out) “I’m not going back in there! No way! I’m sticking to my guns and surviving by myself! In this…strange city I’m in!”

DOCTOR
“Just tell us where Nyssa and Billy are! Jo and I will find our way back into the inner workings!”

JO
“You don’t have to come with us if you don’t want to, you know.”

CORPORAL JAMES
“You’ll both get killed by those Drashigs!”

DOCTOR
“Possibly. But if you’re so concerned, why don’t you redeem yourself and protect us from those Drashigs with that military experience of yours?”

Suddenly, shop windows smash nearby, startling our three heroes.

JO
(gasps; frightened) “Doctor! Look! Coming out of those shop windows!”

The Doctor, Jo and Corporal James become shocked, as shop window dummies march out through the smashed shop windows to approach them.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Autons! They’re coming for us!”

JO
(anxiously) “We’ve got to get away from here! Make for Oxford Circus now!”

DOCTOR
(to Corporal James) “James! Will you help us?”

CORPORAL JAMES
(urgently) “This way! Come on!”

Corporal James takes the Doctor and Jo with them as they run for it down Oxford Street to reach Oxford Circus. The Autons chase them as they open fire with their wrist-guns at the Doctor, Jo and Corporal James.

SCENE #135 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Meanwhile, in the inner workings of the miniscope, Nyssa constructs a makeshift magnetic core extractor with bits of Billy’s camera. Billy watches Nyssa whilst also keeping guard for any Drashigs that may approach them. Nyssa fiddles about with her screwdriver and toolkit at her disposal to construct her makeshift magnetic core extractor.

NYSSA
“Now, I just need to synchronise the infra-red beam protruding from the light reframe alignment adjustor before I can apply the magnetic latch onto the spring connector. Then I should be able to shoot a trigger of energy to demagnetise the metal plate.”

BILLY
(gradually) “Nyssa?” (Pause) “Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes Billy?”

BILLY
(gradually) “I love you.” (Pause) “I really do.”

Moment of silence, as Nyssa stops working and turns to Billy.

NYSSA
“I know that, Billy. I love you too as well. You know that, don’t you?”

BILLY
“Yeah. But…the reason I’m telling you that I love you Nyssa is that…well…I’m thinking about us getting married.”

NYSSA
(gradually; surprised) “What?”

BILLY
“I know we’ve talked about this before. Back in Churchwood Street in Cardiff and also in Stockbridge. We’ve talked about us being together in the long term.” (Pause) “I wasn’t sure about us getting married. But now, I’ve been thinking about it [and I…”]

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Billy, stop! Just stop a moment.”

BILLY
“You…you don’t want me to say anymore? About us?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Billy, I have something to say to you. I…” (Pause) “I don’t want us to get married. Not just yet.”

BILLY
(gradually) “You…you don’t want to get married? You don’t want to marry me?”

NYSSA
“It’s not like the way I sound. It’s just…”

BILLY
(puzzled) “You…I thought this is what you wanted. When we were in the diner…?”

NYSSA
“What I said to you was in the heat of the moment. I was angry at you for considering us unfit for marriage. I couldn’t believe you’d put class and social heritage in the way of us being together.”

BILLY
“I didn’t mean it to sound like that, Nyssa. I was trying to make a joke.”

NYSSA
“I knew what you were trying to do Billy and I took it literally. It’s a weakness on my part, I’m afraid. I’m not one for jokes you see.”

BILLY
“That’s not true. You laugh at the jokes I make. Even the bad ones.”

NYSSA
“Sometimes the bad ones turn out to be the best.”

BILLY
“Thank you, Nyssa. That’s very reassuring.” (Pause) “We have talked about it though. Us being together in the long run. I thought you would’ve liked me to consider us getting married.”

NYSSA
“You’re jumping too many steps, Billy. I don’t want to rush you. I don’t want you to be forced into something you don’t want to do. Because…you’re not ready for marriage yet.”

BILLY
“I’m not?”

NYSSA
“No, you’re not. And neither am I. At least, I’m not in a hurry for it. I prefer to let what we have run smoothly and see how we get on.”

BILLY
“So, you don’t mind…me not asking you to marry me yet?”

NYSSA
“No. Not at all, Billy.”

BILLY
“Because I’m not ready. I’m really sorry Nyssa, but I’m not ready to marry you yet.”

NYSSA
“I know, Billy. I know.”

BILLY
(gradually) “But I still want to be with you. No doubt about that. I still want us to be together.”

NYSSA
“And I’d like nothing better than to stay and be with you, Billy Walker. I hope that our relationship will continue to develop into something better.”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
(sighs) “I don’t deserve you, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “No Billy. You don’t.” (Pause) “And I don’t deserve you either.”

Nyssa takes Billy and they both kiss and embrace each other. They eventually stop kissing and embracing each other.

NYSSA
(satisfied) “Now, Billy. I need to carry on making this makeshift magnetic core extractor. I’m nearly finished, so don’t interrupt me.”

BILLY
“Right. Got you loud and clear. I’ll keep taking a lookout. Thankfully no Drashigs have come for us yet.”

Nyssa picks Billy’s camera up and continues her work. Billy keeps on watch for any Drashings as their screams and howls echo nearby.

Corporal James reminds me of a bit of a Han Solo from A New Hope out for himself but inside lies a good man. I’m hoping he helps save the day at the end like Han Solo did?

Again another excellent chapter that features some truly great character moments as the Doctor & Jo reminisce of old times while Nyssa & Billy discuss their futures. It adds to the drama because the characters arcs feel real which makes the reader care about their fates.

      Hi Simon.

Interesting you find Corporal James reminds you of Han Solo from ‘A New Hope’. I honestly didn’t have that in mind when I wrote the character originally. I’m glad you can see that with Corporal James looking out for himself whilst being good on the inside. I’m sure he’ll be back to save the day at the end later on in the story.

Very pleased you enjoyed this chapter in ‘City of Monsters’. Very pleased you enjoyed the character moments between the Doctor and Jo as well as between Nyssa and Billy. Glad you feel for the characters and care about their fates. I do my best to make the characters as believable as possible when developing them as well as provide action to the story.

Many thanks. Hope you enjoy the next chapter.

      Tim. 🙂
