‘City of Monsters’, Part Three, Chapter 9

9. Miniscopes

Roll original 1982 Peter Davison opening credits

REPRISE

DOCTOR
“We’re in a miniscope! A miniscope of all places!”

JO
“We’re all in big trouble, aren’t we?!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Now we have to be very careful! Because as far as the Drashigs are concerned, we’re next on their menu for dinner!”

The three Drashigs howl and scream as they hungrily slither their way towards the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo.

(CONTINUES INTO:)

SCENE #101B – EXT – SWAMP BEACH, SWAMP CITY – DAY, MORNING
But instead of a direct attack, the three Drashigs slither ahead of the TARDIS fourestome the other way. They follow a different trail. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo watch astonished as the Drashigs slither away.

BILLY
(surprised) “They’re not attacking us! They’ve ignored us!”

NYSSA
“Don’t put your hopes up, Billy. Appearances can be deceiving.”

DOCTOR
“Yes I’m afraid they are, Nyssa. Those creatures are hunting us certainly. But they’re following the trail of our scent before they can catch up with us!”

BILLY
(shocked) “Hunting?! You say hunting us?!”

JO
“They’ll be heading where we want to be, Doctor. Back at the entrance to where we left those clock workings! They’ll get us before we can even get out!”

DOCTOR
“That’s why we must get back there and avoid any Drashigs gnawing at us or biting our legs off!”

NYSSA
“Then what are we waiting for?! Let’s run and head back there!”

BILLY
“But Doctor, you haven’t told us what those creatures are?! Why are they hunting us…?”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Billy, this isn’t the time to pester the Doctor with questions! We must move on from here now!”

JO
“Absolutely! We won’t see the light of day if we stay here!”

DOCTOR
“To the junction point of the swamp city it is then! After that, back to New York hopefully!”

The Doctor leads the way, as he; Nyssa, Jo and Billy run for it and head back for the hatchway whence they came.

SCENE #102 – EXT – SWAMP STREET, SWAMP CITY – DAY, MORNING
Back on the edge of Swamp City, the Doctor and his friends arrive back at the junction point between Swamp City and New York. They approach where they left the hatchway. The Drashigs scream and howl from a distance as they’re still on their tail. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo pant as they run.

BILLY
“I can’t see any of those slimy brutes! But I can hear them alright!”

NYSSA
“They’re close! I can sense them! They’re close and intent on killing us!”

JO
“How much further are we now, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Not far, Jo! We’re almost there!”

They turn the corner and then get a shock at what lies ahead of them.

BILLY
“Oh! Well, we found the hatchway we came out of.”

NYSSA
“And now there’s a group of Ogrons blocking our route of escape.”

JO
“Oh terrific! Just what we need! And the Drashigs are nearly onto us!”

The Drashigs scream again from a distance, getting closer. The Doctor then steps forward and approaches the Ogrons

DOCTOR
“Hold on a minute, you three! I’ve got an idea!”

JO
“Venusian Aikido again, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Right first time, Jo.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, be careful!”

The Doctor makes his way over to the Ogrons. The Ogrons grunt as they run to the Doctor and are about to attack.

DOCTOR
“Ah! Good morning! Isn’t it a nice day?”

But the Ogrons lash out at him aggressively. The Doctor begins to knock out the Ogrons with his Venusian karate. He fights them one at a time, knocking them out completely as they grunt and groan to the floor. This last for ten seconds. The Doctor eventually finishes his fight with the Ogrons as he swipes his hands and turns to face his three companions.

DOCTOR
(satisfied) “There you are! I managed it perfectly!”

BILLY
(relieved) “Well! Thanks, Doctor!”

NYSSA
“Now the Ogrons are sorted, we can make our way into the inner workings.”

The Drashigs howl in the distance as they get closer.

JO
(anxiously) “Oh yes! And fast!” (to Doctor) “Doctor, quickly! Open the hatch!”

DOCTOR
“Right!”

The Doctor sets about opening the hatch before a Drashig appears and towers above them. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo turn around to see the Drashig and become terrified.

NYSSA
(shocked) “Oh no! A Drashig!”

JO
“It’s come for us! We’re too late!”

BILLY
(determined) “Not if I can help it! I’ll use one of these Ogron weapons!”

Billy goes to the ground and takes one of the weapons from one of the fallen Ogrons, aiming it directly at the Drashig.

BILLY
(to Drashig) “Take this, you monster!”

DOCTOR
“No Billy, don’t!”

Billy fires the Ogron weapons, which happens to be a rifle, at the Drashig before them. The Drashig reacts by lunging at Billy. The monster grabs one of Billy’s legs with its mouth. Billy cries in pain as he falls to the ground, being pulled by the Drashig.

JO
(shouts) “No!!!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Billy!”

BILLY
(panics) “Help me! It’s got my leg! Help me!!!”

The Drashig snarls as it pulls Billy on the ground, about to lift him up in the air.

NYSSA
(cries) “Jo! Help me save Billy!”

JO
“Right!” (calls) “Hang on, Billy! We’ve got you!”

BILLY
(cries) “Hurry! It’s almost got all of me!”

Nyssa and Jo run forward and grab onto Billy before he gets pulled up by the Drashig into the air. The two women tug in getting Billy free but the Drashig is stronger.

JO
(to Drashig) “Oh no you don’t, you brute! You’re not having Billy! Not ever!”

The Drashig growls hungrily as a tug of war ensues between it and Nyssa and Jo with Billy in the middle.

NYSSA
(realises) “Wait a minute!” (to Jo) “Jo, I’ve got an idea! Hold onto Billy for me! I’ve got to get that Ogron rifle Billy was using!”

Nyssa lets go and fetches the Ogron rifle dropped by Billy from the ground. Jo strains as he holds onto Billy with the Drashig pulling him.

JO
(cries; anxiously) “Please Nyssa, hurry! The Drashig’s getting too strong for me!”

BILLY
(apprehensively) “What are you doing, Nyssa?!”

NYSSA
“I want to try and shoot one of its teeth. It might react when I make the shot!”

Nyssa readies her gun and aims it at the Drashig’s teeth.

NYSSA
“Right! Ready! One…two…three!”

Nyssa fires and the Drashig shrieks as it lets go of Billy’s leg with its mouth. Howling in pain, the Drashig retreats.

JO
(cheers; relieved) “Done it! We got Billy free! Well done, Nyssa!”

BILLY
(groans) “Oh it nearly chewed my leg off! My leg’s bleeding!”

NYSSA
(calls) “Jo! Help me get Billy onto his feet!”

At that, Jo helps Nyssa as they both get Billy onto his feet. They then become terrified as more Drashigs approach from behind them, howling and screaming.

JO
(realises; panics) “Look! They’re coming back! There are more of them this time!”

DOCTOR
(calls) “Will you three hurry up! Get inside this hatch now!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo turn to see the Doctor call to them from inside the hatch, which he just opened whilst they were tackling the Drashig.

NYSSA
“The Doctor’s got the hatch open and he’s inside! Come on! Into the hatch like he said.”

JO
“And quick!”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “Billy, can you manage?”

BILLY
“I think so.”

JO
“Good. Then let’s run!”

Nyssa and Jo carry Billy as he limps away and they’re heading for the hatch. The three companions soon enter inside, whilst the Drashigs follow their scent and chase after them. They howl and scream along the way.

SCENE #103 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
Back on Teruvada 16, the main citadel of Grondor is under attack. Shudders of firepower attack the building. King Garnik, Prince Ernpic, Bork, Tulu and Minister Kovut feel the shudders whilst they’re in the throne room.

ERNPIC
(enraged) “They got in?! The enemy?! They breached in through the walls and are now attacking our city?! How dare they trespass on Nargdu grounds!”

GARNIK
“I’m not happy with this either, my son! But it has happened!”

ERNPIC
“I should be out there! On the front line! With my troops! Yet I’m stuck in here with you father and you Kovut. Watching this…this…trash!!!”

KOVUT
“It is better for a prince of Nargdu to remain in the citadel walls and be protected whilst the troops fight outside.”

ERNPIC
“Don’t you dictate my position, Kovut! You’re not my advisor! You’re nothing! You’re nobody! You’re even worthy to be a minister!”

GARNIK
“Calm down, my son!”

ERNPIC
(yells) “I’ve had enough of being calm!!”

Garnik smacks Ernpic in the face. A moment of silence ensues.

GARNIK
(satisfied) “Well, that at least has made you stop shouting in my halls.”

ERNPIC
(aghast) “You strike me, father! Even at a time of war, you strike me?!”

GARNIK
“You are too immature to be worthy a prince, Ernpic. Bear that in mind. Unless you should wish to be a fool and slain on the Ronnelep fields and never be crowned king.”

Moment of silence.

GARNIK
(to Kovut) “Kovut? Have you had any contact from any of the royal commanders protecting the citadel?”

KOVUT
“Commander Yotach was the last to report in, your majesty. But that was half an hour ago. She may still be alive though. She is a competent soldier.”

GARNIK
“Send for her immediately! Bring Commander Yotach to the throne room and ask her to give a full report on the current war status. We must have time. I mustn’t run out of time.”

ERNPIC
“Time for what?! What is there time to be waiting for, father? To be slaughtered by our enemy?!”

GARNIK
(to Ernpic) “You shall learn to know what it means to be a true king, Ernpic. At the moment, you’re stubborn as your ambitions.” (to Kouvt) “Be off with you, Kovut. Send for Yotach immediately!”

KOVUT
“As you command, your majesty.”

Kovut bows and walks out as he leaves the throne room. Meanwhile Bork and Tulu watch the screen of their machine.

TULU
(anxiously) “How are we to cope under these conditions, Bork? I’m getting spooked with these walls shuddering from bombardments. Not a healthy place to do a show, is it?”

BORK
(distracted) “Hmm?”

TULU
“You’re not listening, Bork!” (tutts) “As usual.”

BORK
“Say Tulu! There’s some interesting developments going on here.”

TULU
“What developments?”

BORK
“In circuit five. Something odd going on here.”

TULU
“The Tellurians?”

BORK
“No. Not the Tellurians.”

TULU
(thinks) “The Drashigs then? The Ogrons; the Autons?”

BORK
“Those Ogrons and Autons have scattered all over the place. While the Drashigs…they seem to be heading for the entrance to the central inner workings of the machine.”

TULU
“But they can’t, can they? Not without following the trail of scent from…” (stops mid-sentence)

A moment of silence ensues as Bork and Tulu gradually realise what’s just happened.

BORK
(realises) “The Tellurians! They escaped the Drashigs and have gone back into the inner workings!”

TULU
“And now the Drashigs are following them! They’re going to break out of their own circuit and chase the Tellurians until they’re eaten alive!”

BORK
(despairingly) “Oh woe is me, Tulu! Why did this have to happen to me?!”

Bork and Tulu worry as they continue to watch what goes on in their contraption via the monitor screen.

SCENE #104 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Back inside the inner workings of the machine, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo stop running after having just re-entered the hatchway. They become exhausted as they sit down to rest. Billy groans in pain as he’s still injured from his attack by the Drashig.

NYSSA
(concerned) “Billy, are you alright?”

BILLY
(groans) “Have we stopped now? Can we take a rest? My leg’s hurting me!”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “Yes Billy. We’ve stopping running now. Come and sit by here, dear.”

Nyssa helps Billy to sit down on the floor. The Doctor and Jo also sit down on the floor, worried by what’s occured.

DOCTOR
“How do you feel, Jo?”

JO
“Doctor, I never thought I’d see creatures like that again. Neither did I expect to be here in a place like this again.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Well, you didn’t expect to see me, Nyssa and Billy either, Jo.”

JO
“Doctor, I’m frightened.”

The Doctor comforts Jo, whilst Nyssa tends to Billy.

NYSSA
“You’ve lost quite a lot of blood, Billy. You should be alright though. It’ll start to swell eventually. I’ve applied presurre to the wound.”

BILLY
“I could feel the monster’s fangs inside my leg. I’ve never felt so terrified. And such agonising pain.”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “Don’t worry about it, Billy. We’re safe from those things.” (to Doctor) “Aren’t we, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa. We’re safe for now anyway.”

BILLY
(concerned; to Nyssa) “Are you alright though, Nyssa? You were very brave using that Ogron gun.”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “I’m fine, Billy.” (Pause) “You were brave too, Billy. Though I had a more tactical advantage than you.”

BILLY
(laughs; wryly) “And there was me being trigger-happy.”

DOCTOR
“We can’t stay here for too long you know, you three. Those Drashigs will never give up or stop. They’ll keep on hurting us until they tear the flesh off from our bodies!”

BILLY
“What?! Are they really that relentless?!”

DOCTOR
“Yes I’m afraid so, Billy.”

JO
(to Nyssa; Billy) “We’ve seen them before, you see. The Doctor and I. We’ve met the Drashigs before.”

NYSSA
(deep breath) “Doctor, you said you know where we are. Please tell us. What is this place?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I’m sorry, Nyssa; Billy. I meant to take you to Vektris, but I’m afraid I missed a margin of error. We’re inside a miniscope.”

BILLY
“Yes, you said we’re in a miniscope, Doctor. What is a miniscope exactly?”

DOCTOR
“It’s a miniaturised slideshow attraction, Billy. Displaying the lives of intelligent and non-intelligent life forms for the purposes of entertainment.”

JO
“We’ve been in one of these things before, the Doctor and I. Many years ago. They’re like intergalactic peepshows, you see.”

NYSSA
“Intergalactic peepshows?”

JO
“Yes.” (Pause) “You know, like when you go to the zoo and see your favourite animals put there on display.”

BILLY
“Yes, Nyssa and I have been to one. In Bristol Park.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm. And may I say how much I disapprove of zoos with caged up animals.”

NYSSA
“You mean to say…we’re in some kind of zoo. With people looking at us.”

JO
“Yes. The giant hands we saw earlier. They’re from the outside. The real outside, I mean. The giants are watching us like ants in a glass container.”

NYSSA
(astonished) “Fascinating!”

BILLY
“But…that’s crazy! Who would want to see real people inside a cage as big as this? With London; New York and that swamp city rolled together into one?”

DOCTOR
“It’s thoughtless people who make these contraptions, Billy. It’s cruel to lock specimens into these things.”

NYSSA
“You sound like you disapprove of their existence, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“I do, Nyssa. In fact this miniscope we’re in shouldn’t exist. As far I’m concerned, this one should be in the tip burned to cinders!”

JO
“The Time Lords saw it to that these miniscopes were banned. And the Doctor had a big part to play in that.”

NYSSA
“The Time Lords banned these machines?”

BILLY
“Then how come the four of us are inside this machine. How come this one isn’t burned to cinders?”

DOCTOR
“That’s something I’m not entirely sure about, Billy. But the fact remains this one exists and it shouldn’t be used.”

NYSSA
“How exactly did we get trapped in here in the first place?”

DOCTOR
“Ah yes! When I was directing the TARDIS to land on Vektris, it got caught up in the compression field of this miniscope. And that’s how we found ourselves in London. Like I said, it wasn’t the real London at all. It was just a copy.”

BILLY
“Just as the New York we were in wasn’t the real New York at all. And neither is the swamp city with those…Dishrags or something?”

DOCTOR
“They’re called Drashigs, Billy. Drashigs.”

NYSSA
“What about you, Jo? How did you get here?”

JO
“I don’t know. I don’t remember how I got here.”

DOCTOR
“What was the last thing you remember the day before you came to London, Jo? Before having that meeting with Mr. Lloyd.”

JO
(thinks) “Well, I remember getting a text message from Cliff before going to bed. He said he loved me and wished me well for tomorrow – I mean today. Then it’s a blank. I can’t remember anything else. I must have fallen asleep.”

An unearthly shriek echoes nearby. This terrifies the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo.

JO
(gasps) “They’ve followed our scent!”

BILLY
“That was quick! They didn’t give us a chance to rest long enough!”

DOCTOR
“The Drashigs don’t give chances, Billy. Their ravenous appetite overwhelms them, I’m afraid!”

NYSSA
“Let’s get out of here quickly!”

JO
“Which way though!”

DOCTOR
“This way! Come on!”

NYSSA
“Here Billy! Let me help you up! Lean on me!”

BILLY
“Right!”

Nyssa helps Billy up as they; the Doctor and Jo head off down the corridor to find a way out back to the New York section of the miniscope. As they head off, the unearthly shriek echoes again. They then turn around to see a Drashig burst in through the wall of the inner workings, howling and screaming as it chases them.

BILLY
(horrified) “Good grief! It just smashed through that wall there!”

NYSSA
(terrified) “They are relentless. How can one outrun these things?!”

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Never mind that, Nyssa! Run! Run now!”

JO
“Yes! Or else we’ll be next for supper! Down here!”

The TARDIS foursome make a run for it, heading back for the New York section of the miniscope, as the Drashigs slowly chase after them. The Drashigs scream and howl as they slither through the inner workings of the machine.

SCENE #105 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
In the throne room of Grondor citadel on Teruvada 16, Minister Kovut enters with a young woman soldier named Commander Yotach. They approach King Garnik and Prince Ernpic.

KOVUT
(boldly; to Garnik) “I, Kovut, bring Commander Yotach as requested, your majesty.”

GARNIK
(to Kovut) “Thank you, Kovut. I’m glad you were prompt.” (to Yotach) “Commander, you were out on the defence line around the citadel. What have you to report?”

YOTACH
“The war’s growing worse, sir. Our defences are almost scarce. Thankfully our allies have arrived from neighbouring countries. But whether they’ll be here in time to prevent our foes entering these halls, I do not know.”

GARNIK
“More than we. Teruvada Sixteen seems to be on a knife’s edge.”

ERNPIC
“Wouldn’t this be an opportune time to put the matrix computer to better use, father? And the vault below the planet’s crust? Surely even you father can’t deny the usage of those facilities.”

GARNIK
(abjectly) “I shall decide for myself what is to be done, Ernpic. Kindly do not make my mind up for me. There is still Bork’s machine to consider.”

ERNPIC
“Bork’s machine?! Even when our planet’s nearly on a knife’s edge, you still think about that wretched box of tricks?!”

KOVUT
“The situation is getting serious, your majesty.”

GARNIK
(to Kovut) “I know Kovut, I know.” (Pause; to Yotach) “Commander? Any word from the human forces coming to our aid?”

YOTACH
“They’re slow in responding, sir. I doubt we’ll get word from them in time.”

ERNPIC
(annoyed) “Typical! Absolutely typical!” (bitterly) “Humans!”

Garnik; Ernpic; Kovut and Yotach then hear Bork and Tulu arguing loudly as they turn around to see them.

TULU
(insistently) “I really think you should tell them, Bork!”

BORK
“I will not tell them and that’s that!”

TULU
“You should tell them, Bork!”

ERNPIC
(interrupts) “Tell us what?! What is it you’re concealing from us?!”

BORK
(reassuringly) “Nothing, your majesty! There is nothing to worry about!”

TULU
(persistently) “Tell them, Bork! It’s better to tell them the truth now than later.”

GARNIK
“What truth, Bork? Tell us!”

BORK
“My glamorous assistant Tulu has a very vivid imagination. I must apologise…”

ERNPIC
(shouts; threateningly) “Tell us what the truth is or I shall cut off your feet!”

GARNIK
(admonishes) “My son!”

TULU
(to Garnik; Ernpic) “The Drashigs – the monsters that Bork showed you earlier. They’re chasing the four Tellurians.”

ERNPIC
“Chasing them?”

GARNIK
“Are they indeed? And what is wrong with that?” (to Bork) “Surely the Drashigs would eat them instantly like you said, Bork.”

BORK
“Oh indeed, your majesty. They absolutely would. With their gnashing and gnawing…”

TULU
(interrupts) “They’ve broken into the central workings of this machine.”

ERNPIC
“Broken in?”

KOVUT
“I thought nothing could get out of those circuits. You said so yourself.”

TULU
“That’s what we thought. But the Tellurians go in and out of the circuits. So have the Drashigs. They’ve followed their trail and are now chasing them inside the inner workings.”

GARNIK
(astonished) “Followed their trail?”

BORK
“The Drashigs hunt by scent when it comes to flesh creatures. They’re mad with lust for eating Tellurian skins. And if my assistant says rightly – and I’m not for one moment saying that she is – those Drashigs will follow those four Tellurians anywhere. Whether it’s outside their own environment or inside.”

GARNIK
“Fascinating.”

ERNPIC
(scornfully) “Oh how fascinating yes, father. But the war on Teruvada Sixteen…”

GARNIK
“That will have to wait!”

ERNPIC
(enraged) “Wait?! Can you seriously expect me [to…?!”]

GARNIK
(ignores Ernpic; to Bork) “Bork, where are the Tellurians now?”

BORK
“Still inside the inner workings. They’ll be heading back to circuit four.”

TULU
“Back into the yanks section.”

GARNIK
“Switch on the sound speakers for me. I want to hear what those Tellurians are saying whilst they’re being chased by those…monsters of yours.”

BORK
(slightly puzzled) “Very well, your majesty.”

Bork complies as he goes to switch on the sound speakers on the machine.

SCENE #106 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Back inside the inner workings of the miniscope, the Doctor; Nyssa; Billy and Jo run down the corridor as the Drashigs chase after them, screaming and howling from a distance. Billy limps whilst Nyssa supports him as they make their way down the corridor.

BILLY
(exhausted) “Nyssa! Please leave me! I’ll slow you down! Get yourself; the Doctor and Jo to safety!”

NYSSA
“Don’t be silly, Billy! I won’t leave you behind! You’ve saved my life far too many times in the past. I’m returning the favours.”

BILLY
“This isn’t a time to be sentimental!”

NYSSA
“It’s not about sentiment, Billy. It’s about survival. Now lean on me!”

Billy leans on Nyssa as they continue heading off down the corridor. The Drashigs scream terribly as they continue to chase them from a distance. Jo eventually comes to a stop and calls the Doctor back to her.

JO
(calls) “Doctor! Look!”

The Doctor runs back to re-join Jo.

DOCTOR
“What is it, Jo?”

JO
“Isn’t this the way we came from in New York? Up here in the bulkhead? With the metal plate on it?”

DOCTOR
(thinks) “It could be, Jo.”

JO
“I’m pretty sure we came down here from up there.”

NYSSA
“Really, Jo?”

JO
“I’m sure of it! I can hear taxis in the bulkhead from here.”

NYSSA
“This must be the hatch, Doctor. We got to get up there. We can’t keep running in this place forever.”

DOCTOR
“It might be the wrong exit point, Nyssa.”

BILLY
“We have to risk it, Doctor. I’m getting anxious to rest my foot than to run down here in this corridor.”

DOCTOR
(gradually; agitated) “Oh very well. We’ll have to demagnetise the hatch with the magnetic core extractor first. Then we’ll be out of here as quick as a flash.”

The Doctor makes his way over to the hatch in the bulkhead and places the magnetic core extractor up on the smooth surface of the metal plate. The extractor buzzes as the Doctor demagnetises the hatch. The loud howling and shrieking from the Drashigs echoes nearby.

JO
(urgently) “Doctor, quickly! They’re nearly here! The Drashigs are nearly here!”

DOCTOR
“I’m working as fast as I can, Jo. Give me time!”

Eventually, the Doctor manages to demagnetise the hatch and the metal plate comes off. The Doctor moves the metal plate off and the hatchway is open to him and his friends.

DOCTOR
“Done it!” (to Nyssa; Billy; Jo) “Right, you three! Inside!”

JO
“Don’t tell us twice, Doctor.”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “Billy, me and Jo will go up first. We’ll help lift you up into the hatchway whilst the Doctor pushes you up from down here. Alright?”

BILLY
“Yes thank you, Nyssa. This’ll make a change from leaning on you, won’t it?”

With that, Nyssa and Jo climb up into the hatchway first. Billy waits to go up next to be helped by the girls from inside the hatchway and by the Doctor from outside. The Drashigs howl and shriek from a distance as they continue to purse their prey nearby.

SCENE #107 – EXT – 34TH STREET, MANHATTAN – DAY, AFTERNOON
The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo eventually find themselves back on 34th street in New York after climbing out of the hatchway from the miniscope’s inner workings. They look around, astonished to find themselves back where they are.

NYSSA
(astonished) “It is New York!”

BILLY
(to Jo) “That was really clever of you, Jo. To work out that we’d be back in New York from that bulkhead we found ourselves going into in the inner workings.”

JO
“It was nothing to it really, sweetie. I remembered we climbed down the hatch because we were in that building running away from those dinosaurs and robots.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Surprising that building’s back intact.” (realises) “Of course! I should have realised!”

BILLY
“What?”

DOCTOR
“Places and people reset themselves whenever we’re in a miniscope. To enhance the entertainment for every new audience.”

NYSSA
“Hence why the building’s in order and not destroyed.”

DOCTOR
“Exactly!”

BILLY
“So where do we head off now? I’m grateful to you girls and to you Doctor for getting me back here in New York with my scarred leg, but it’s killing me!”

JO
“We could try the diner again. Hopefully no Autons will crash in and capture us whilst we’re there.”

NYSSA
“There’s a probability factor against it, Jo. But it’s the best chance we’ve got, I think. To get to a place of safety.”

JO
“I don’t know much about probability, darling.”

The Drashigs’ roars echoes from nearby. The Doctor and his companions turn back to look.

DOCTOR
“The Drashigs will soon break out of the inner workings and crumble this building down if I know them.”

JO
“But they might lose our scent altogether, Doctor.”

The Drashigs roar even louder from a distance.

JO
“Then again not.”

BILLY
“It’s the diner we head for then. I’m rather partial to a hot dog or something.”

NYSSA
“Let’s not waste time then. Come on!”

The Doctor; Nyssa; Billy and Jo start to run as they head for the diner. As the companions run on ahead to get to the diner, the Doctor then stops and stays where he is. Nyssa, Billy and Jo turn back to him, confused.

BILLY
“Doctor, why have you stopped?!”

JO
“Come on, Doctor! Like Nyssa said, it’s the diner we head for to get away!”

NYSSA
“Why are you standing in the middle of the road like that, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(frustrated) “I’ve had enough of this! I’m not going to be played with anymore!”

JO
“This isn’t a time to get frustrated, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(angrily) “It’s a perfect time to get frustrated, Jo. I’ve had enough!” (calls out loud) “Hey! You lot! Can you hear me?! I know you’re up there!”

NYSSA
“Doctor, you’re shouting at the sky!”

DOCTOR
“Not the sky, Nyssa. Our spectators!”

BILLY
“You mean…those giants watching us like in a zoo?”

DOCTOR
(angrily) “Yes! And I just hope they can hear me!” (shouts out loud) “Come on, enough of your silly little games! We know what this is all about! We refuse to be played with! We’re not your toys anymore! Let us out of here! Let us out!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo get anxious as they run back to the Doctor who shouts out loud to the viewers from outside the miniscope.

NYSSA
“Doctor, please calm down! There’s no need to get agitated!”

DOCTOR
“I can do whatever I like, Nyssa!” (shouts out loud) “Let me and my companions go! Release us from this miniscope of yours! Let us out I say! Let us out!”

The Drashigs’ screams get louder whist the Doctor persists to shout out loud at the sky with Nyssa, Billy and Jo beside him.

SCENE #108 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
Back in the king’s throne room in the citadel of Grondor on Teruvada 16, Bork; Tulu; King Garnik; Prince Ernpic; Minister Kovut and Commander Yotach watch the monitor screen of the miniscope as they see the Doctor shouting out loud to them.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Let us out I say! Let us out!”

Everyone becomes aghast in the throne room.

BORK
“Well, I’ll be dashed!”

TULU
“He does know, Bork! They know, Bork! They know that they’re inside a machine!”

BORK
“This is most worrying! They can’t be of our new stock!”

TULU
“I told you there was something funny about them, Bork! I told you!”

ENRPIC
(enraged) “I knew it! Spies! Harbouring spies all this time! They’ve been working on the inside for the Earth empire!”

GARNIK
“It seems Bork you and your assistant have indeed been lying to us.”

TULU
(protests) “Even if they are spies, they’ve nothing to do with us!”

KOVUT
“Then how is it they got into your miniscope?”

BORK
“Please understand me, your majesties; Minister. I do not know how this has happened. Tellurians cannot get inside the machine deliberately.”

GARNIK
“I order that the one in the cream coat be brought to us out from the machine! At once, you hear?”

BORK
“But…but that means I’ll have to put my hand into the machine!”

GARNIK
“You’ve done it before, Bork.”

BORK
“But with those Drashigs running about! One of them might pop its head out and easily bite my hand off!”

ERNPIC
“You will do as the king of Nargdu says, Bork! Do as my father says!”

TULU
“Come on, Bork. What’s the use? You might as well agree.”

A moment of tense silence ensues.

BORK
(reluctantly) “Alright then. I’ll fetch the Tellurian out. The cream coated one. Just give me a sec.”

Bork rolls up his sleeves as he’s about to place his hand into the machine.

BORK
(to Tulu) “Tulu, you’ll have to help me.”

Tulu agrees as she and Bork set about opening up the inner part of the machine. Meanwhile Garnik turns aside to Kovut.

GARNIK
(to Kovut) “Kovut? We shall require security forces! There is bound to be trouble within the throne room!”

KOVUT
“As you command, your majesty.” (calls) “Commander Yotach!”

Yotach steps forward and salutes.

YOTACH
“Yes minister?”

KOVUT
“Fetch some of your troops to come into the throne room in case of an emergency. There’s likely to be an intruder alert.”

YOTACH
“But sir…?”

KOVUT
“Don’t ask questions Yotach. Just do as you are told, will you?”

YOTACH
“Immediately, sir. I shall summon security forces right away!”

With that, Yotach heads off. Kovut, Garnik and Ernpic continue to watch Bork and Tulu attending to their machine with getting the Doctor out from it.

SCENE #109 – EXT – 34TH STREET, MANHATTAN – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back inside the miniscope, in New York, the Doctor paces about waiting impatiently with Nyssa, Billy and Jo beside him. The Drashigs’ screams and howls echo nearby.

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Come on, come on! They should have heard me call out to them by now!”

NYSSA
“You can’t expect them to anything, Doctor.”

The Drashigs’ screams and howls echo closer.

JO
“I don’t want to sound like a cloth-head, but ought we better get our feet moving again? Those Drashigs are still getting close!”

BILLY
“We’re still close to the building we came out of. The Drashigs are likely to burst their way through to come out after us!”

JO
“We simply can’t let them get out! We’re too close for comfort if we stay here.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, we have to go now! We’ll be directly in close proximity for the Drashigs to get us!”

DOCTOR
“I’m not moving from this spot, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
(sighs; annoyed) “Must you be so stubborn?!”

DOCTOR
“Do you like being caged, Nyssa? Because I don’t! I want to see the people who brought us here and give them a piece of my mind!”

JO
(interrupts) “Look!”

BILLY
“What is it? A Drashig?”

JO
“No! Far worse! A huge hand!”

The foursome look up to see the large hand of Bork coming in to get them.

DOCTOR
“Ah! About time!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Doctor, look out!”

A shudder then occurs and the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo fall over to the ground. The giant hand comes further in and picks up the Doctor from the ground. The Doctor cries startled once he’s been picked up.

DOCTOR
(cries) “It’s got me! It’s picked me! It’s going to take me away!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo look to see this and immediately run forward to get to the Doctor. The three companions grab onto the Doctor whilst the giant hand pulls him out.

JO
(cries; determined) “No! You’re not taking him!”

BILLY
(cries; out loud) “Give the Doctor back! Whoever you are, give the Doctor back!”

NYSSA
(cries; to Billy; Jo) “We must keep the Doctor here with us! We can’t let them take him away from us!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo tug to bring the Doctor back whilst the giant hand gets too strong for them.

BILLY
(worn out) “I don’t know if we’re winning or not. This hand’s mightier than us!”

NYSSA
(worn out) “Don’t give up! We can do this! We have to get the Doctor free!”

DOCTOR
“It’s no good, Nyssa. I doubt whoever our captors are can hear us let alone agree to our terms. It’s me they obviously want. Let go and get yourselves to safety please!”

JO
(determined) “No Doctor, we’re not letting you go!” (calls; out loud) “Please! Take me instead! Not him! He’s a good man!”

BILLY
“Jo, no!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Jo; Billy! Look out!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo recieve a shock as another large hand swoops in and knocks them off their feet to the ground. Once his companions are off him, the Doctor gets pulled up in the large hand out of the machine.

BILLY
“Whoa! That’s one way to knock us off! Use the other giant hand!”

NYSSA
(realises) “The Doctor’s being taken away from us! Into the sky! By the giant hand!”

JO
(determined) “No! I won’t let them take him! I won’t!!!”

BILLY
(cries) “Jo, no!”

But it’s too late, as Jo grabs onto the other giant hand and she gets pulled out of the machine at the same time the Doctor gets pulled out. Nyssa and Billy see this happen and become deeply worried.

BILLY
(calls) “Hey! Bring her back!”

NYSSA
(calls) “Give us the Doctor and Jo back!”

But there’s no response. Tension ensues for Nyssa and Billy in New York city.

NYSSA
“It’s no good. We’ve lost them.”

BILLY
“We must save the Doctor and Jo!”

Billy runs forward before Nyssa stops him.

NYSSA
“It’s too late, Billy! Both Jo and the Doctor are out of our reach! There’s no knowing how we can get them back without knowing what we’re in ourselves.”

BILLY
(sighs) “Yes I know. The Doctor and Jo just got picked by those hands; went into the sky and we don’t know why.” (groans) “What’s happening, Nyssa? Where are they for goodness sake?”

NYSSA
“I don’t know. Maybe they’re with the creatures that brought us here! I don’t understand any of this.”

The Drashigs’ roars and screams distract Nyssa and Billy as they turn to hear them coming from a distance.

BILLY
“Meanwhile we’ve been forgetting about another little thing.”

NYSSA
“Billy, let’s get away from here! The Drashigs are about to burst through! Run!!!”

Nyssa and Billy get up from the floor and make a run for it. They’re a few metres away before they look back to see a Drashig burst up from the ground through the building they; the Doctor and Jo recently came out of. The Drashig causes the building to collapse whilst it screams and howls with rage in New York.

BILLY
“Did you see that? It just shot out through the building. They must be stronger than a million men, these Drashigs!”

NYSSA
“Billy, stop looking at it! We’ve got to go! Now!”

BILLY
“Where to?! Where can we go from here?!”

NYSSA
“Back to the diner of course! Where we originally intended! Now let’s move!”

Nyssa and Billy run off into the city, heading for the diner on 42nd street. The Drashig meanwhile gets itself rid of the crumbling building and slithers after Nyssa and Billy, screaming and howling away. It’s soon joined by two more Drashigs.

SCENE #110 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, MORNING
Back in the throne room in the citadel of Grondor on Teruvada 16, the Doctor and Jo are now enlarging to human size on the floor after being taken out of the miniscope. Bork is shocked after having just put the Doctor and Jo on the floor whilst the others are astonished.

TULU
(gasps) “Well I’ll be! I’ve never seen a Tellurian, let alone two, or any other living beings expanding before! I’ve seen innate objects enlarge before but this is ridiculous!”

BORK
“I never had such a shock! I held them in my hand! Now they’re expanding!”

Bork and Tulu watch as the Doctor and Jo are now grown to full-size. The Doctor and Jo groan disorientated, as they recover from nausea and headaches after growing to full-size.

DOCTOR
(groans; concerned) “Jo? Jo, are you here?”

JO
(reassuringly; disorientated) “Yes. I’m here, Doctor.” (Pause) “Ooh I feel so prickly in the head!”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “The after-effects of being outside the miniscope’s compression field. It’ll soon pass. You should be alright.”

BORK
(to Garnik; Ernpic) “They’re now fully grown, your majesties!”

ERNPIC
(shouts) “Arrest them! Arrest the humans!”

YOTACH
(calls) “Guards! Seize them!”

The Nargdu guards immediately go to pick up the Doctor and Jo off from the floor. The Doctor and Jo moan as they’re being pulled off up from the floor and are made to stand on their feet.

YOTACH
(to Doctor; Jo) “Come on, you two! On your feet!”

TULU
“Hey, easy on them! They’ve just been taken out of the miniscope! They’re bound to be sick!”

ERNPIC
(shouts) “They’re enemies of the Nargdu! They must be destroyed!”

TULU
“Why? They haven’t done anything wrong!”

Tulu makes his way over to the Doctor and Jo.

TULU
(to Doctor; Jo) “Are you alright, dears?”

ERNPIC
(shouts; to Tulu) “Stand back, you woman! These two humans must be executed!”

TULU
“Don’t you ‘woman’ me! And what gives you the right [to…”]

KOVUT
(interrupts; barks) “Guards! Take that woman to one side!”

BORK
“Yes come on, Tulu. We must respect their majesties’ wishes.”

Bork takes Tulu away from the Doctor and Jo before the guards push her to one side.

TULU
(protests) “Alright; alright! No need to push!”

ERNPIC
(to Kovut) “Thank you, Kovut!” (eagerly) “Now we can commence the execution of these two human spies!” (to soldiers) “Soldiers! Raise your arms! Prepare to open fire [and…”]

GARNIK
(interrupts) “No! They must not be killed! These two humans must stay alive!”

ERNPIC
(shouts; enraged) “How dare you, father?! How dare you stand in the firing line?!”

GARNIK
“I am the king! And I decree that these humans shall not be killed!”

ERNPIC
“But they’re humans, father! They stink with their presence here! They must be killed! We must have them killed! We must! WE MUST!!!”

GARNIK
“You exceed your authority, son! I am the king of the Nargdu and I decide what must be done with them. Is that understood?”

ERNPIC
“What possible gain could you have from these two pieces of filth, father?”

GARNIK
“Their purpose has not yet been determined. Why were they in that machine, Ernpic? Why? WHY?!!!”

ERNPIC
“As if that matters?! All that matters is their pending death! Do not stand in the way of the execution of these human scum!”

The Doctor fully recovers whilst he stands with Jo, who’s still recovering, as he confronts King Garnik and Prince Ernpic.

DOCTOR
(protests) “Would you please kindly stop debating us like this?! If you want to deal with us, you should ask who we are first before deciding on killing us!”

ERNPIC
(to Doctor) “How dare you speak in the royal court of Grondor?! Do not speak such foul words in front of the king!”

DOCTOR
“The king? Oh I see! The king of the Nargdu Empire by any chance?”

GARNIK
“You are correct, human! I am the king of the Nargdu! Glory to Empire!”

DOCTOR
“And this planet my friend and I are on. Is it Teruvada Sixteen – planet of the Nargdu Empire?”

KOVUT
“You did not know of this?”

DOCTOR
“I wasn’t sure, but I am now.”

At that moment, Jo fully recovers.

JO
“Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Jo, you’re alright! Thank goodness! You are alright, aren’t you?”

JO
(realises) “Doctor, look! The TARDIS!”

The Doctor looks to see, as well as Jo, as the TARDIS is standing in the king’s throne room.

DOCTOR
“Ah, yes! Thank you for spotting that for me, Jo! I’m glad to see the old girl again!”

KOVUT
“This blue…” (reads) “‘police public call box’ is yours then?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. It’s my space and time ship. Thank you for looking after it.”

JO
(realises) “And Doctor, look! There’s the miniscope! That is the miniscope, isn’t it?”

The Doctor looks to see where the miniscope is in the throne room.

DOCTOR
“Yes! There’s the beauty! The little contraption!”

JO
“And Nyssa and Billy are still inside that machine!”

DOCTOR
(to Jo) “Yes they are, I’m afraid.” (to Bork) “And I presume you are the owner of this contraption, sir.”

BORK
“Allow me to introduce myself! I am the great Bork. And this is Tulu.”

DOCTOR
(to Tulu) “Ah! Hello! I’m the Doctor! Charmed to meet you.”

TULU
(to Doctor) “Hmm! Likewise, Doctor.” (to Jo) “And you are…?”

JO
“Oh! I’m Jo. Jo Jones. Nice to meet you.”

ERNPIC
(interrupts; yells) “Enough of this social interacting! These two have trespassed on Nargdu grounds! The worst crime in Teruvadan history!”

DOCTOR
(protests; to Ernpic) “If you think our presence here is a crime young majesty, think again! For you and your family are already committing a crime at this moment!”

ERNPIC
“Lies! All lies! Nargdu never commit crimes!”

GARNIK
“What are you insinuating, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“That machine you have there before you! The miniscope! It has been banned for use by a higher authority! By my own people! You have no right to use it! It is unethical for the use and display of intelligent life forms for entertainment!”

JO
“And because of your use of this machine, our friends Nyssa and Billy are still trapped in there. They’re most likely to be dead with those monsters – the Drashigs – chasing after them!”

A tense atmosphere ensues in the king’s throne room, as the Doctor and Jo take centre stage.

Whoah it’s all kicking off, this chapter was crammed to the hilt full of tense drama, poor ole Billy he’s becoming the fall guy getting mauled by a Drashig he’s certainly going through it in this story, loved Billys reference to Drashigs as dishrags that made me laugh.

So The Doctor & Jo are out of the machine & on the planet Nargdu while Nyssa & Billy are trapped inside the miniscope, i reckon Corporal James help them & he & Billy will become friend’s.

I’d love BF to adapt this story it’s tailor made for audio, the sound of the screaming Drashigs chasing the Doctor & Co, the roars of Dinosaurs this would be awesome to listen too in the dark late at night.

Absolutely loving this, got few worrying things going on at the minute this story is a great way to switch off from the real world & relax.

      Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed the tension and drama featured throughout this chapter.

Yeah Billy’s having a bad time of it with getting attacked by a Drashig isn’t he? Hopefully he’ll have his leg seen to by someone before he can walk properly again. Glad you liked the ‘dishrag’ reference made in the story by Billy. I believe that was in the original ‘Carnival of Monsters’ story by Robert Holmes at some point.

Yeah the Doctor and Jo are out of the machine and are on the planet of the Nargdu called Teruvada 16. They’re going to be in big trouble when confronting King Garnik and Prince Ernpic, aren’t they? Did you notice I had the Doctor and Jo out of the machine early in ‘Part Three’ compared to when the Doctor was out of the machine in time for ‘Part Four’ in ‘Carnival of Monsters’?

Yeah Nyssa and Billy are trapped inside the miniscope now. Hopefully Nyssa and Billy can resolve the argument they had earlier about considering marriage with each other and hopefully Corporal James will come along to their rescue whilst they’re in the miniscope. Wait and see! 😀

I’m glad you think this story would be tailor made for audio if adapted by Big Finish. I’m sure it would be great to listen to on audio with the Drashigs and the dinosaurs roaring away in the background. I’m glad Big Finish have done an audio story with Tom Baker’s Doctor featuring the Drashigs. I’ve not heard it yet, but I’m sure it has the Drashigs at their best for an audio production.

Very pleased you loving reading my latest ‘Doctor Who’ story on my blog Simon and that it’s giving you a chance to relax away from the real world.

      Tim. 🙂
