‘City of Monsters’, Part Two, Chapter 5

5. Ogron Base

Roll original 1982 Peter Davison opening credits

REPRISE

BILLY
(shocked) “He’s been shot! One of those bozos shot him!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Doctor, wake up! Please Doctor, wake up!”

JO
(panics) “He can’t be dead! He simply can’t!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo are then roughly brought to stand up by the Ogrons. The Ogrons grab them viciously by the arms.

JO
(cries; protests) “Oww! Let go, you Ogrons! Let go!”

NYSSA
(protests) “You’re hurting my arms! Get off me!”

BILLY
(cries; protests) “Oww! Easy with handling me, will you?!”

Despite their protests, Nyssa, Billy and Jo can’t break free from the Ogrons’ custody. Their leader Kharshak and his comrade Wrarshak soon approach.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “I take it this is the Ogrons’ leader coming towards us.”

JO
(dismayed) “Oh great!”

Kharshak and Wrarshak look directly at Nyssa, Billy and Jo with menacing and threatening intent. They raise their weapons at them.

KHARSHAK
(grunts) “You three! Enemies of Ogrons! Come!”

WRARSHAK
(grunts) “You three! Prisoners of Ogrons!”

(CONTINUES INTO:)

SCENE #53 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back in the King’s throne room on Teruvada 16, Bork; Tulu; King Garnik and Prince Ernpic watch what happens on the machine’s screen.

ERNPIC
(happily) “Well, well, well. The four humans have been captured at last!” (laughs) “Very timely intervention of mine, wasn’t it?”

TULU
(annoyed; to Ernpic) “You idiot! You could have damaged the machine the way you tampered those knobs!”

ERNPIC
(angrily) “How dare you speak to me like that?! I am a prince of Nargdu! I deserve respect!”

TULU
“Those were Ogrons! Stupid apes with guns! You could ‘ave had those Tellurians damaged!”

ERNPIC
(bitterly) “Good! That would have been pleasing! Death to the humans!”

TULU
“We have a reputation as show people to respect low-level cultures! Now that you’ve tampered with the contraption…”

ERNPIC
(interrupts; shouts) “If this insubordination does not cease, I shall express my rage upon you without limit!”

TULU
“You can’t treat us like this! We’ve travelled miles for the sake of your king!”

The throne room then shudders. Bombardments occur from outside.

TULU
(anxiously) “W-W-What was that?!”

ERNPIC
“War is approaching! Teruvada’s under attack! And our time – the Nargdu’s time has been wasted!”

GARNIK
“Steady, my dear son. We shouldn’t treat our guests so harshly.”

Tulu then comes beside Bork as he sorts something out with the machine.

TULU
(whispers) “Say Bork, I told you we shouldn’t have traded with these people. I had doubts about the Teruvadans and their stinking Nargdu Empire, but you wouldn’t listen to me!”

BORK
(ignorantly) “Hmm.”

TULU
(realises; whispers; to Bork) “‘Ere, Bork! What are you doing?!”

BORK
(focused) “Trying to see nothing’s damaged. There’s something wrong with the circuitry. Something blocking transfer signals. I’m trying to see…ah-ha! Here!”

Bork then takes something out of the machine’s circuits. He shows it to Tulu.

TULU
“What’s that?”

BORK
“Not sure. Some kind of bric-a-brac running inside circuit three, I think.”

Tulu stares at the object in Bork’s hand. He is holding the blue object of a miniaturised TARDIS.

SCENE #54 – INT – PRISON CELL AREA, OGRON BASE – DAY, MORNING
Back in London, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo are thrust into a prison cell, as they’re now inside an Ogron base. The Doctor recovers from the shot he recieved.

NYSSA
(concerned) “Doctor, are you alright?”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “I’ll be fine, Nyssa.”

BILLY
(relieved) “Oh thank goodness!”

DOCTOR
“The blast wasn’t so severe. Just shot past right off the tip of my shoulder.”

NYSSA
“It’s a good thing you’re still alive!”

The Ogrons lock the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo inside their prison cell. Kharshak and Wrarshak step forward to speak to them behind caged doors.

WRARSHAK
(grunts) “Silence! You! Be silent!”

KHARSHAK
(grunts) “You are prisoners! Prisoners will be silent!”

JO
“What have we done to deserve being locked up in here?! Let us out!”

KHARSHAK
“No! Prisoners stay in cells! Prisoners stay that way!”

BILLY
“You seem dim-witted, mates.”

WRARSHAK
“We wait commands from our masters!”

DOCTOR
“And who might your masters be?”

The Ogrons refuse to say anything as they grunt.

DOCTOR
“How is it you Ogrons have managed to acquire a base in the heart of London?”

KRARSHAK
(grunts) “We glorify at victory! We victorious! We captured you! Us Ogrons captured you!”

NYSSA
“You’re gloating at us! You must have shallow lives.”

WRARSHAK
“We go now! We have work to do!”

With that, the Ogrons leave. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo remain in their prison cell once the Ogrons have gone. The Doctor then groans as he slumps to the floor. Nyssa, Billy and Jo help to support him.

JO
(concerned) “Are you sure you’re alright, Doctor?”

NYSSA
(concerned) “You seem to be in some considerable pain.”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, it’s alright. I really need to get myself back into the swing of cricket sometime!”

BILLY
“Never mind about that! How are we going to escape from here?”

DOCTOR
“We can’t escape!”

BILLY
“What?!”

DOCTOR
“Not yet. Not until we know what we’re dealing with. There’s still a lot of unanswered questions for us.”

JO
“Like how the Ogrons got here, you mean? And why?”

NYSSA
“And why the city of London’s so deserted. Save for plastic men, robots and terrible dinosaurs.”

JO
“I didn’t realise that about London. To me it seemed ordinary.”

BILLY
“Perhaps it’s some sort of invasion; abduction or body-snatching like?”

DOCTOR
“I’m sure there’s an explanation for all this, Billy. At the moment I’d like to tackle this one step at a time.”

JO
(sighs) “This is going to be a long day, isn’t it?”

DOCTOR
“First things first.” (to Jo) “Jo, tell us how you came to be in London. Then Nyssa; Billy and I will tell you our story. Start from the beginning.”

JO
(gradually) “Well, I was here because I was meeting my husband Cliff. You know Cliff, Doctor. Professor Cliff Jones…”

Whilst Jo relates her story to the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy in the Ogron prison cell…

SCENE #55 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
…in the citadel of Grondor on Teruvada 16, King Garnik and Prince Ernpic notice Bork and Tulu’s fascination with their bit of bric-a-brac from the machine.

GARNIK
“What’s that you’re holding in your hand, Bork?”

BORK
“This? Oh I don’t know. Some thingamajig causing disruption inside the machine. Nothing serious; nothing harmful.”

ERNPIC
“I thought you were an expert on this machine!”

BORK
“Oh I am; your majesty! I’m not a technical expert mind! I leave that to Tulu. She’s so gifted!” (to Tulu) “Aren’t you, Tulu?”

TULU
(cries) “Bork, look out!”

Suddenly, the blue box expands to a sheer size. Bork yelps as he drops it to the floor.

BORK
“W-W-What’s happening?!”

TULU
“The box, Bork! You dropped the box!”

BORK
“It’s expanding! That blue box is expanding!”

ERNPIC
“What is the meaning of this?! What are you frauds up to?!”

BORK
“This has nothing to do with me, your majesty!”

GARNIK
“Does this happen when you take components out of your machines, Bork?”

TULU
“I doubt that this has anything to do with the machine at all, your majesty!”

ERNPIC
“Silence, girl! My father was talking to your master! Not you!”

TULU
“He’s not my master! He doesn’t own me!”

BORK
“See! It’s grown to full size!”

They watch as the blue box, lying sideways, grows to full size before them. It eventually stops expanding and a moment of tense silence ensues.

TULU
“It’s stopped growing at last!”

BORK
“Compression field! That’s what it was! It came out of its compression field! It stayed out of its internal environment for too long! Objects regain full size once they’re out of the machine!”

ERNPIC
“Seize this babbling! This is some kind of trick!”

GARNIK
“The box! It’s of a blue colour! And it’s lying sideways!”

ERNPIC
“I can read the words from it, father. ‘Police Public Call Box’.”

GARNIK
“I take it this isn’t part of the contraption’s internal design.”

BORK
“I’m afraid not, your majesty. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard plenty of talk about blue police boxes. They come from Sol Three.”

ERNPIC
“Earth?! They belong to the humans!”

BORK
“Tellurian security was very definite in the dark ages of Sol’s history. Barbarian tactics were used to apprehend and trap their criminals. So they put them in these boxes.”

ERNPIC
(enraged) “This is a conspiracy!”

GARNIK
“What say you, my son?”

ERNPIC
“Well think about it, father! The strange Tellurian scum inside the machine with their odd behaviour; the breaking of their hypnotism; their rebellion; their apprehenders and now this! Does that not strike you as a coincidence for all to see?! Tellurian spies working against us!”

TULU
“‘Ere, what are you getting at?!”

ERNPIC
“You two are trying to make fools of us! Well it won’t work! You’re harbouring spies to destroy the Nargdu Empire!” (cries) “Glory to Empire!”

TULU
(protests) “We’re not harbouring spies!”

BORK
(protests) “We would never harbour spies! We’re just a simple travelling party!”

GARNIK
“My son has a point! If you two have taken some of the human lingo and know of their traits and history, then your lives are on the line!”

BORK
“Your majesties, we assure you there is nothing to worry about! Besides the Tellurians in that machine have been captured by the Ogrons. There’s nothing they can do to escape!”

TULU
“The Ogrons are very fierce fighting machines. Even if they are dim and of limited intelligence.”

GARNIK
“We Teruvadans do not like deceit within our halls and provide the most severe punishment if you have been lying to us!”

The whole room shudders with bombardments from outside.

GARNIK
“And these are troubled times considering the circumstances.” (to Ernpic) “My son! Come with me! We shall take a stroll around the grounds of the citadel.”

ERNPIC
“Very good, father!” (to Bork; Tulu) “You two don’t try anything while we’re gone!”

Prince Ernpic eventually follows his father King Garnik out of the king’s throne room. Bork and Tulu remain.

BORK
(annoyed) “Barbarians!”

TULU
“Well, I told you this wasn’t going to be easy, Bork.” (wryly) “These people aren’t that bad, you said. They’re just a little larger than life, you said. Thanks for tagging me along for the ride.”

BORK
“This is possibly the worst time we’ve come during a war. I had hoped we’d give these people some happiness in their lives.”

TULU
“It’s not these loons who need happiness. It’s the other side…”

BORK
(interrupts; hushes) “Keep your voice down, girl! We’re in enough trouble as it is!”

SCENE #56 – INT – PRISON CELL AREA, OGRON BASE – DAY, MORNING
Back inside the Ogron base in the prison cell area, Nyssa and Billy finish telling their story to Jo about how they and the Doctor came to be in London.

NYSSA
(finishes) “And it was then we managed to find you Doctor and well…you know the rest of our story.”

BILLY
“Doctor, are you suggesting we all came here by mere coincidence? That this strange reunion was put together by some madman?”

DOCTOR
“Possibly. I wouldn’t like to run too many hopes on that. But the facts are clear. London is not what it seems with tube trains; London streets, monsters lurking about corners and causing terror into people’s hearts.” (Pause) “I have a sneaky suspicion that there’s some architecture somewhere. Possibly down one of the tube train stations that wouldn’t be in conjunction with what’s standard at this current time…”

JO
(interrupts) “You haven’t asked me how I’ve been, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “Pardon?” (realises) “Oh. Sorry, Jo. I thought I had. Um…I did said “Hello!” didn’t I?”

JO
“It’s been a while since I left U.N.I.T. and got married to Cliff. That lovely Welsh man.”

BILLY
“You married a Welsh man, Jo?!”

JO
“I did.”

BILLY
“Crikey! You picked the best!”

Moment of silence.

JO
“It’s been a long time, Doctor. For me that is. I’m not sure when you last saw me. Probably forgot all about me since then.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Jo, I would never forget [you…]”

JO
“I’ve done so much with my life, Doctor. So much travelling around the world.” (Pause) “You were an important part of my life, Doctor. Back in the days when I was happy. You; me; the Brigadier; Sergeant Benton; Mike Yates; everyone else at U.N.I.T.” (Pause) “It seems like now that you’re trying to distance yourself away from me.”

DOCTOR
“No, Jo. It’s not like that. I’m so concerned about saving all our lives. Saving your life as well as Nyssa and Billy’s.”

JO
“I know. It’s so strange but…you’re still the same. Even though you look so different, you’re still the same man. After all these years…you’ve still got that same wilily wisdom in your eyes when it was the good old days with you and me. That same gleam in your eyes…that shows you are the Doctor.” (laughs) “They may have changed colour but…”

At this point, the Doctor laughs as well, joining in with Jo. They eventually stop laughing after seeing the funny side of things.

JO
“Oh I’ve missed you, Doctor. I’ve missed you so much.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Jo. I’ve missed you too.” (Pause) “And I hope I’ll be able to keep you; Nyssa and Billy safe before we get thrown in the deep end.”

JO
“Me too.”

With that, the Doctor and Jo embrace each other. A moment of silence ensues.

BILLY
(whispers; to Nyssa) “The Doctor and Jo certainly have a lot of catching up to do.”

NYSSA
(whispers; to Billy) “To think of all those lives the Doctor has touched. All the friends that he has made.”

The Doctor and Jo eventually stop embracing each other.

JO
(apologetically) “Sorry Doctor. You were saying. About how to escape.”

DOCTOR
“Yes as I was saying, Jo. I think it’s probably a good time for you to put your escapology skills to good use.”

JO
(cheerfully) “Absolutely! Allow me, Doctor!”

Nyssa and Billy eventually gasp as they see Jo hold some skeleton keys in her hands.

NYSSA
(amazed) “You got a set of keys on you, Jo!”

BILLY
(amazed) “Where did you get those from then?”

JO
(cheekily) “Even the Ogrons didn’t see me snatch these off them before they put us in here.”

DOCTOR
“Let’s get ourselves free then, shall we?”

SCENE #57 – INT – PRISON CELL AREA, OGRON BASE – DAY, MORNING
Eventually, the prison cell doors open as Jo manages to get herself; the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy free with the set of skeleton keys she’s just used. With that, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo escape their prison cell, opening and shutting the door behind them once they’re out.

NYSSA
“We’re out! Good work, Jo!”

BILLY
“Yes good work!”

JO
(to Nyssa; Billy) “Thank you both!” (to Doctor) “Now, Doctor. Which way do we go from here?”

DOCTOR
“This way I think.” (Pause) “No, that way!” (Pause) “No, this way!”

The Doctor heads off down the corridor whilst Nyssa; Billy and Jo sigh and head off in the other direction.

NYSSA/BILLY/JO
(calls) “Down here, Doctor!”

Eventually, the Doctor follows after his companions to catch up with them.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Wait for me!”

SCENE #58 – INT – CORRIDOR, OGRON BASE – DAY, MORNING
Leaving the prison cell area behind them, the Doctor; Nyssa; Billy and Jo find themselves in a dark corridor within the Ogron base.

BILLY
“Can’t see any Ogrons about, thank goodness.”

NYSSA
“Surely they would have left a guard at the door.”

DOCTOR
“The Ogrons aren’t as smart as you and me, Nyssa. They’re primitively stupid.”

JO
(jokingly) “Perhaps they went off for a tea break.”

Just then, a shout echoes from behind them as an Ogron appears in the corridor.

OGRON #1
“Prisoners! Prisoners escape! Must warn others!”

BILLY
“Oh no! That Ogron’s just got back from his tea break!”

OGRON #1
“Must sound alarm! Must sound alarm!”

NYSSA
“Doctor, we’ve got to stop him!”

DOCTOR
“Hang on, Nyssa! Let me just…”

The Doctor fumbles in his coats pockets and takes out a cricket ball.

DOCTOR
“Aha! Here we are!” (to Nyssa; Billy; Jo) “Nyssa; Billy; Jo! Get down!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo get down as the Doctor bowls his cricket ball at the Ogron. The cricket ball hits the Ogron on the head. The Ogrons grunts in pain before he collapses to the floor. Eventually, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo run over to check the Ogron as he lies unconscious on the floor. The Doctor picks up his cricket ball off from the floor from the fallen Ogron before putting it back in one of his coat pockets.

DOCTOR
“There! Owzat!”

NYSSA
“Nicely bowled, Doctor!”

BILLY
“Seems you don’t need any cricket practice after all, Doctor. You’ve still got it!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Nyssa; Billy. Nice to be appreciated. I must say I was pretty lucky that time.”

JO
“Goodness! Knocking an Ogron out with a cricket ball! Certainly beats the sonic screwdriver.”

NYSSA
“Did the Doctor use the sonic screwdriver a lot back in your day, Jo?”

JO
“Frequently. Whether it’s opening electronic locks; scaring Sea Devils or detecting anti-matter, he uses that nifty little gadget of his.”

DOCTOR
(insistently) “Now come on, you three! We’ve got to get out of this Ogron base. Then find a tube train station nearby.”

With that, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo walk down the dark corridor as they head off to find the exit.

SCENE #59 – INT – COURTYARD, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back on Teruvada 16, in the courtyard of Grondor’s citadel, King Garnik and Prince Ernpic walk about the grounds discussing politics as well as the situation with Bork and Tulu.

ERNPIC
“Well, father! Shall we have these two miscreants put to the sword? Or have them hanged above the citadel walls?”

GARNIK
“Not yet, my son. Not yet. I’d like to see this demonstration of theirs continue.”

ERNPIC
“What? Father, after all that happened?! Surely you can see they’re a threat!”

GARNIK
“I still have a little matter to contend with. And besides…how do we know it was those two who harboured human spies. Perhaps it’s one of us.”

ERNPIC
“One of the Nargdu?! Never!”

GARNIK
“It is a possibility. There are groups within our society who don’t like the appeasement between our two warring empires. You son are responsible for arousing those groups.”

ERNPIC
“With good reason! We of the Nargdu Empire must defend ourselves to the last!” (cries) “Glory to Empire!”

GARNIK
“It hangs in the air that you are a likely suspect. Never lose sight of it.”

ERNPIC
“What advantage would I gain to harbour human spies? To destroy the empire we cherish and nourish.” (cries) “Glory to Empire!”

GARNIK
“To gain people’s support perhaps. To put the human empire to shame and humiliation. I do not know.”

ERNPIC
(protests) “But father…”

GARNIK
(interjects) “I dislike humanity. I’m against their ideology. But we Nargdu mustn’t lose sight that alien allies could grant us the answers we need. To weaken our enemies. Those last two of their surviving race can give us those answers.”

ERNPIC
“If we mustn’t rule out possibilities, then they might as well be harbouring spies after all, father!”

GARNIK
“True. But there’s something of their machine I’d like to have.”

ERNPIC
(shrewdly) “And what pray is that, my good noble father?”

GARNIK
“Weaponry! Weaponry prudent to be useful…in this long, suffering war!”

Battle sounds echo across the Ronnelep Fields nearby. At that moment, Minister Kovut appears, bowing before King Garnik as he approaches.

GARNIK
(pleased) “Ah! War minister Kovut! What message do you have?”

KOVUT
“Hail, great king of Teruvada! The Nargdu Empire is suffering from many frontal attacks against the enemy. Glory to Empire! All planets have fallen under their control. Their dominion is getting stronger!”

GARNIK
“What of current relations with the Earth Empire?”

KOVUT
“They’re resilient. Concerned with their affairs. Not interested in helping us.”

ERNPIC
“Huh! Hardly a surprise! Backstabbers!”

KOVUT
“There’s even word that the matrix computer will be under threat!”

GARNIK
“No!”

KOVUT
“And the vault is about to be opened. We cannot survive much longer without reinforcements.”

ERNPIC
(wryly) “Which we’ve lost already I presume.”

KOVUT
“Yes. I only came to give you this bit of news myself.” (to Garnik) “Your majesty, King Garnik! What shall we do?”

Garnik thinks as he considers this for a moment.

GARNIK
(gradually) “Kovut, you may be essential in what my son and I hope to gain!”

KOVUT
(puzzled) “Pardon, your majesty?”

GARNIK
“Come, Kovut! Let me show you what my son and I have been watching!”

ERNPIC
(astonished) “Father, have you gone mad?”

GARNIK
“Stay out here, son! Watch the battlements wrenched in blood! Unless you wish to join me and Kovut in the throne room.”

Garnik leads Kovut back to the throne room whilst Ernpic eventually but grudgingly follows after them.

SCENE #60 – INT – CORRIDOR, OGRON BASE – DAY, MORNING
Back in the Ogron base in London, the Ogrons march down the dark dank corridors to report for duty at certain patrols in the city. They pass an hiding places where the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo are in the corridor. A moment of silence ensues.

BILLY
(whispers) “Have they gone?”

JO
“I think so.”

NYSSA
“Let’s see, shall we?”

DOCTOR
“Be careful, Nyssa.”

Nyssa slowly comes out of her hiding place to check and look around. After a few seconds…

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “It’s alright. They’ve gone.”

The Doctor, Billy and Jo come out to join Nyssa. They walk down the corridor, being cautious as they go.

BILLY
“We can’t keep dodging Ogrons like this forever! They keep coming out of every corner.”

JO
“We’ve done this for the past hour. Isn’t there anyway we can escape back out into the open without being caught?”

NYSSA
“We must be very close. We have to follow the trail where that patrol was heading off to.”

BILLY
“That could be dangerous if we know what we’ll find at the other end?”

They hear marching footsteps behind them.

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Nyssa; Billy; Jo! Get back!”

The Doctor pushes Nyssa, Billy and Jo back behind a wall down the corridor. More Ogrons enter the corridor as they grunt and growl, marching past our heroes’ hiding places. The TARDIS team come out of hiding again once the Ogrons have gone.

NYSSA
“Well, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“It is dangerous at the end of the tunnel. But nothing ventured; nothing gained is what I say. Hmm?”

BILLY
“This is getting ridiculous!”

JO
“I agree. How long do we have to keep on hiding?”

NYSSA
“How are we going to get past the Ogron guards once we’re outside?”

DOCTOR
“So many questions. One thing at a time, you three. We just keep on walking until we reach the front entrance to find the answer.”

BILLY
(realises) “Hey! Look!”

Billy spots something an armoury stack nearby. Billy takes out one of the guns from the armoury and shows it to the others.

BILLY
(pleased) “Yes! This is what we need!”

JO
“Sorry for being dim but those are guns, aren’t they? Ogron guns?”

NYSSA
“Billy, you seriously can’t mean to use one of those weapons to cause harm, do you?”

BILLY
“This may well give us a chance to knock out those Ogrons before they attack us. Have you got a better suggestion, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“You never were this trigger-happy, Billy.”

JO
“Wouldn’t that be murdering the Ogrons though?”

BILLY
(to Nyssa) “I’m not trigger-happy, Nyssa. I’m only thinking of defending ourselves from the Ogrons – you, me, Jo and the Doctor.” (Pause) “I’m not happy about this either, you know. I’ve just realised I don’t know how to use an Ogron gun.”

DOCTOR
“The Ogrons will likely kill us before we get a chance to kill them.” (Pause; to Billy) “Just keep one for yourself Billy and have it ready when we need it.”

BILLY
“Very well, Doctor.”

NYSSA
“I’ll take one as well, Doctor. It’ll give all us a double helping of defence should we need it.”

Nyssa takes another gun for herself from the armoury stack to accompany Billy.

DOCTOR
“Very well. But don’t give one to Jo or me. I’m happier to use my own tactics.”

JO
(recalls) “Your Venusian Aikido, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Haven’t done it in years, Jo. Hopefully I’ve still got the knack. It’ll be very effective against the Ogrons.”

BILLY
“Nyssa and I will keep you and Jo covered, Doctor. Just in case your tactics go wrong.”

DOCTOR
(affronted) “Wrong?! Wrong?! And why should it go wrong, Billy?!”

NYSSA
“Let’s head out, shall we?”

JO
“Yes. Let’s go before any more Ogrons come and get us.”

SCENE #61 – EXT – LANDING RAMP, OGRON BASE – DAY, MORNING
Out on the landing ramp of the Ogron base, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo tread carefully as they come out. They find two Ogron guards standing outside at the ramp.

DOCTOR
(quietly) “Nyssa; Billy; Jo, get back! We have company waiting outside!”

The four friends quickly head back inside, out of hiding, whilst watching the two Ogrons posted on guard. A moment of silence ensues.

NYSSA
(quietly) “Two Ogrons. Well, at least all the patrols are out.”

BILLY
(quietly) “Shall I take a shot at them with my weapon, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(quietly) “No wait, Billy. Hold your fire a moment. Let’s try my tactics first.”

JO
(quietly) “Doctor, do be careful!”

DOCTOR
(quietly) “I’ll be alright, Jo.”

Eventually the Doctor makes his way down the ramp before the two Ogrons turn to see him.

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Good afternoon! Or is it evening; or is it morning? You know I can never keep track of the time and day. Considering not much has changed in the clouds.”

The Ogrons grunt alarmingly as they’re about to attack the Doctor. But the Doctor then knocks out the Ogrons, one by one instantly. The Ogrons fall to the ground and the Doctor clasps his hands together, satisfied.

DOCTOR
(satisified) “Hmm. I still have it in me.” (calls; to Nyssa; Billy; Jo) “Come on, you three! You can come out now!”

Nyssa, Billy and Jo eventually make their way down the ramp to meet the Doctor.

JO
(pleased) “Well done, Doctor! You’ve still got it! I knew you would!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Jo! Nice to be appreciated.”

NYSSA
“But surely Doctor, these creatures can’t be the real protagonists.”

JO
“I should say not. Some Ogrons aren’t really savage. Just silly and clumsy.”

BILLY
(laughs) “For a moment I thought you’d say you’ve met a friendly Ogron.”

JO
“Oh that would be even more silly.”

DOCTOR
“Never mind the Ogrons, you three. We need to get away as far as possible. Find a tube station if we can.”

BILLY
“We’re in Oxford Street, Doctor. According to that sign post over there. Nyssa and I were in Oxford Street earlier. We went to the underground station in Oxford Circus like we told you.”

NYSSA
“That must be nearby. Oxford Circus station it is, Doctor.”

JO
“Come on then! let’s get going and then…”

Just then, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo get fired upon from behind. They look to see Ogrons charging out from their base to attack them.

NYSSA
“Ogrons?!”

DOCTOR
“Oh no! I should’ve expected this to happen!”

JO
“There must be about hundreds of them coming out!”

BILLY
“Their leaders are with them! I recognise them!”

Kharshak and Wrarshak lead the Ogrons, as they charge down the ramp towards them.

KHARSHAK
(shouts) “Stop them! Stop prisoners!”

WRARSHAK
(shouts) “They must not escape! Not from Ogrons!”

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Come on, you three! Run!!!”

NYSSA
(dismayed) “Not again!”

BILLY
“Come on, Nyssa; Jo! Let’s leg it!”

JO
“I’m with you three all the way!”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo run for their lives, as they head into Oxford Street with the Ogrons chasing after them. Kharshak, Wrarshak and the Ogrons reach the bottom of ramp before chasing after the TARDIS heroes into Oxford Street.

WRARSHAK
“They head for underground!”

KHARSHAK
“What do they want with underground?!”

WRARSHAK
“Me Wrarshak no care! Me want their guts!”

KRARSHAK
“Me Kharshak say yes! We stick maggot holes in them!”

Grunting, Wrarshak and Krarshak lead the chase after the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo.

SCENE #62 – INT – ENTRANCE HALL, OXFORD CIRCUS TUBE STATION – DAY, MORNING
A while later, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo arrive at the Oxford Circus tube station. They enter the entrance hall before panting for breath after running. Ogron gunshots echo nearby.

JO
(pants) “Thank goodness! We got here in the nick of time!”

NYSSA
(pants) “I’ve never done so much running in all my life like that before!”

BILLY
(pants) “We got them behind us, remember? I can hear gunshots being fired.”

Ogrons gunshots continue to echo nearby as they get closer.

DOCTOR
(breathlessly; urgently) “Billy, quick! Help me pull down this metal shutter! Hurry man, hurry!”

BILLY
(breathlessly) “Right! Helping you I am, Doctor!”

Billy helps the Doctor as they pull down the metal shutter at the front entrance of the Oxford Circus tube station. It’s hard work for the Doctor and Billy to pull the metal shutter down.

DOCTOR
(grits; urgently) “Come on, Billy! Keep pulling! Only a few metres to go!”

BILLY
(grits) “I am, Doctor! Trust me, I am keeping at it!”

Ogron gunfire shots and grunts echo nearby as they nearly approach.

JO
(realises; panics) “Oh no! The Ogrons are nearly here!”

NYSSA
(urgently) “Billy; Doctor, please hurry! I can see the Ogrons’ coming from their boots!”

The Doctor and Billy pull harder as they nearly have the metal shutter down on the ground. The Ogrons get closer.

BILLY
“There! Nearly done it!”

Just then, an Ogron who makes to slide from outside grabs Billy’s foot. Billy cries out as he’s swept off the floor.

BILLY
(cries) “Help! Help me, help!”

Billy gets pulled through the gap between the metal shutter and the ground out by the Ogron grabbing onto his foot.

NYSSA
(cries; anxiously) “Billy!”

JO
“Oh no!”

BILLY
(cries) “It’s got me by the leg! One of the Ogrons has got me by the leg!”

DOCTOR
“Nyssa; Jo! Help Billy! Get back in here from the ground!”

Nyssa and Jo run over to help Billy, as they grab him and pull him from the ground to release him from the grip of the Ogron grabbing his foot. Nyssa and Jo struggle to break Billy free from the Ogron’s grasp.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “It’s no good! The Ogron’s too strong for us!”

JO
“We must get Billy free! We must!”

BILLY
“Nyssa; Jo! Let me go!”

NYSSA
“No, Billy!”

BILLY
“Look, there’s no point in us all getting recaptured! You two and the Doctor save yourselves!”

NYSSA
“We’re not leaving you, Billy! We’re going to get you free, do you hear?!”

JO
“Absolutely! Don’t give up, Billy! Me and Nyssa…we’re going to rescue you!”

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Could you two please hurry up?! I can’t keep hold of this metal shutter down for long!”

Nyssa and Jo struggle to get Billy free whilst the Doctor struggles to maintain keeping hold of the metal shutter down whilst the Ogrons try to bring it back up. Eventually and thankfully, Nyssa and Jo manage to get Billy free from the Ogron’s grip on his foot. They pull him out up from the gap between the metal shutter and the ground.

JO
(relieved) “We did it! Thank goodness, we saved Billy!”

BILLY
(gratified; to Nyssa; Jo) “Thanks, girls!”

NYSSA
“Now, Doctor! Do it now! Pull the metal shutter down!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t tell me thrice, Nyssa!”

Eventually, the Doctor pulls the metal shutter door down onto the ground, closing the Ogrons out. The Ogrons bang hard on the metal shutter from outside, whilst the Doctor; Nyssa; Billy and Jo breathe sighs of relief.

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Nyssa; Jo? Are you alright?”

JO
“We’re doing okay, Doctor.”

NYSSA
“Fine, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Good, good. That’s good news all round.” (to Billy) “How about you, Billy?”

BILLY
“I’ll be fine, Doctor. My legs are bit sore but nothing’s damaged.”

NYSSA
“It’s good you’re still with us, Billy.”

BILLY
“It’s good to still be here, Nyssa.”

Nyssa and Billy then kiss and embrace each other.

DOCTOR
“Yes, well we have more important things to worry about. That metal shutter won’t hold the Ogrons outside for very long.”

NYSSA
“So we gather, Doctor!”

The Ogrons bang harder on the metal shutter from the outside.

JO
“We’re trapped in here, aren’t we?”

DOCTOR
“Not if I have anything to do with it. There’s got to be a clue. If only I knew where to find it.”

BILLY
“There’s that metal plate Nyssa and I found in this tube station.”

NYSSA
“Yes, that’s right!” (to Doctor) “Doctor, when Billy and I were here before, we told you we found what looked like a metal plate on the platform floor.”

JO
“A metal plate?”

DOCTOR
“Yes I recall you saying that, Nyssa. Whereabouts was this plate? On which platform was it?”

NYSSA
“Platform one. Billy saw it first before I did.”

JO
“Does this mean we have a chance of knowing where we are, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I hope so.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Nyssa; Billy! Show Jo and me where this metal plate is.”

With that, Nyssa and Billy lead the way as the Doctor and Jo follow them to Platform 1. The persistent banging on the metal shutter by the Ogrons from outside continues.

Great chapter, you balance action & character drama brilliantly while keeping the story’s pace flowing briskly, loved the Doctor & Jo interplay & the Venusian Aikido reference & how the Doctor implemented it against the Ogrons lol.

Is Billy ok he seemed a bit eager grab a Ogron gun? Very intriguing has travelling with the Doctor & seeing the horrors of war finally catching up with him perhaps?

      Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed Chapter 5 of this story. Very pleased you enjoy the balance of action, character drama and pace in my stories. I feel like I’m matching the efforts of RTD and Chris Chinball compared to Steven Moffat in my storytelling.

Very pleased you enjoyed the interplay between the Fifth Doctor and Jo. It had echoes of the ‘Sarah Jane Adventures’ story ‘Death of the Doctor’ scenes between Jo and the Eleventh Doctor didn’t it? Glad you liked the Venusian Aikido reference in the story and how he used it on the Ogrons. I originally had the Fifth Doctor saying “Hiyak!” like the Third Doctor did a lot in his stories. But I felt that wouldn’t be appropriate when I uploaded this story to my blog. So I omitted the Fifth Doctor saying “Hiyak!” when doing his Venusian Akido.

Well Billy has had a lot of experience in his travels with the Doctor. He’s eager to get an Ogron gun so that he can protect Nyssa, the Doctor and himself as well as Jo. Don’t forget he and his father Fred used guns on the Dwaxi in ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’ and there have been stories where Billy had to use a gun for defence purposes either in ‘The Salvador Trilogy’ and ‘The Stockbridge Terror’ (which you’ve yet to read, by the way 😀 ).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Simon.

      Tim. 🙂

P’s i forgot to mention i enjoy how you always include the Doctor’s cricketing into your story’s & like how he used the cricket ball to great affect shame many other Fifth Doctor writer’s didn’t pick up on that.

Yeah I seem to include an number of cricketing references and moments for the Fifth Doctor in my stories, don’t I? I must be really into him as a character.

Sometimes I don’t do it intentionally as it just happens on the spring of the moment when I want the Doctor to think a way out of a tricky situation. So, in order for him and his friends to get out of a situation with an Ogron, I had him use a cricket ball in the scene. It just came naturally to me I think.

Yeah I’ve noticed many writers struggle to write the Fifth Doctor’s ingenuity with using a cricket ball or cricket skills in general in certain stories. Not sure why that is. Some writers are good at it but some do it rarely.

Glad you enjoy me including the Fifth Doctor’s cricketing skills in a story though. 😀

      Thanks Simon.

      Tim. 🙂
