‘City of Monsters’, Part Two, Chapter 6

6. “Vintage Stuff!”

SCENE #63 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, EVENING
Back in the citadel of Grondor on Teruvada 16, it is now the evening. King Garnik and Prince Ernpic return to the throne room with Minister Kovut accompanying them.

KOVUT
“Machine you say? What machine, your majesties?”

ERNPIC
“The creatures Bork and Tulu refused to disclose any information about its identity. They also refused to disclose the identity of their own race.”

GARNIK
“But it is a fascinating machine, Kovut. I have great reason to suspect the machine will aid us in the struggle we have against our foes!”

Garnik, Ernpic and Kovut arrive to watch Bork and Tulu who look up whilst attending to their machine.

TULU
(whispers; to Bork) “‘Ere Bork? They’ve come back!” (ruefully; to Garnik) “Well, your majesty? Have you had your decision about us? About whether to slaughter us?!”

BORK
(scolds) “Tulu, please! Don’t be so rude!”

ERNPIC
(eagerly) “That is a pleasure I’m willing [to…”]

GARNIK
(interrupts) “They are not to be harmed, my son!”

BORK
(relieved; to Garnik) “Oh thank goodness! Many thanks to you, your majesty!”

TULU
“What’s changed your mind then?”

BORK
“Tulu, I’m sure his majesty has his reasons.”

GARNIK
(to Bork) “Bork! This is Minister Kovut.” (to Kovut) “Kovut, this is Bork and his assistant Tulu.”

BORK
(cheerfully) “Delighted to make your acquaintance, sir.”

Bork lets out a hand to shake Kovut’s. Kovut doesn’t take the hand and looks at Bork disapprovingly.

KOVUT
“I wish I can say the same.”

ERNPIC
“Kovut is our war minister.”

TULU
(shocked) “War minister?! You’ve brought a war minister to watch our show?!”

KOVUT
“You two seem somewhat blinkered that war goes on. The Nargdu have no time for petty pleasures.”

GARNIK
“But this demonstration Kovut may hold the answers to solve our problems.”

ERNPIC
“What?!”

KOVUT
(to Garnik) “Begging your pardon, your majesty?”

TULU
“Come again?”

BORK
(to Garnik) “I say…that is generous of you, your majesty. Err…may I enquire as to how my machine holds the answers to your problems?”

GARNIK
“Simply put Mr. Bork, this machine houses the power to entertain. The power for amusement. The power to control. And even the power to uphold traditions of our empire since the Nargdu are in a rapid rate of decline. Glory to Empire!”

KOVUT
“I cannot agree with that statement, your majesty.”

ERNPIC
“I can’t believe my father would use such ghastly words.”

GARNIK
“So therefore I’ve decided, with the matter of war and the matter of devastation on our fingerstip, that Bork’s clunky contraption can hold the hope for our future. The only hope to save us. To save the Nargdu Empire. Glory to Empire!”

TULU
“‘Ere! What does all this mean, your majesty?”

GARNIK
“It means dear lady, that your colleague Mr. Bork is to be our saviour. The saviour of Teruvada Sixteen.”

BORK
(happily; to Garnik) “Well…this is most unexpected. Thank you, your majesty?” (whispers; to Tulu) “You see Tulu? I knew we’d get around these whippersnappers.”

TULU
(whispers) “I don’t like this, Bork. This all seems wrong.”

BORK
(to Tulu) “Quiet now, Tulu.” (clears throat; to Garnik) “So your noble worshipful majesty? What is it you want me to do? To save you and your empire?”

GARNIK
(to Bork) “Simply carry out your demonstration for Minister Kovut.” (to Kovut) “You have no objections do you, Minister?”

KOVUT
“Not at all. Though I am most intrigued at what I’m about to see.”

Kovut soon makes to sit down and watch Bork’s demonstration. Garnik and a bitter Ernpic sit to one side whilst this happens.

SCENE #64 – INT – PLATFORM #1, OXFORD CIRCUS TUBE STATION, – DAY, MORNING
On platform 1 of Oxford Circus tube station, Nyssa and Billy show the Doctor and Jo the metal plate they’ve found. The Doctor has examined the metal plate for quite some time.

NYSSA
“Well, Doctor? Your verdict as well as your opinion, please. You’ve examined it long enough.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “You’re right, Nyssa. It’s no metal like any other. It’s not steel; iron or aluminium. Most curious.”

NYSSA
“It’s an element of the architecture that doesn’t correspond to normal London stone or brick work. It seems disjointed. Futuristic. Not of a primitive society.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm. Certainly not.” (thinks) “You know I’m pretty sure I’ve seen something like this before.”

JO
“So I have, Doctor. Can’t remember where though.”

BILLY
“Can we get this thing open? It’s got to be a hatch thing of some kind.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Let’s find out, shall we?”

Nyssa has a try of lifting the metal plate up from the platform floor. It doesn’t budge however. Eventually, Nyssa stops trying to lift the plate up from the platform floor.

NYSSA
“It’s sealed tight. Some form of magnetic conversion.”

DOCTOR
“I suppose it’ll be a matter of prizing it open.” (thinks; realises) “Wait a minute! I have just the thing!”

JO
“Really? What is it, Doctor?”

The Doctor takes out a gadget from one of his coat pockets and shows it to Nyssa, Billy and Jo.

DOCTOR
“The magnetic core extractor!” (to Jo) “See, Jo? Nifty little device this!”

NYSSA
(surprised) “Where did you get that, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“From my TARDIS of course.”

BILLY
“You had that large contraption inside your pocket all this time?”

DOCTOR
(to Billy) “‘Bigger on the inside’ pockets like I said, Billy.” (to Jo) “Here, Jo! You try it out! Demagnetise the plate for us, will you?”

JO
“Doctor, my hands are rather clumsy.”

DOCTOR
(encouragingly) “Come on, Jo. I know you can do it.”

The Doctor hands the magnetic coil extractor to Jo to which she takes, completely baffled.

JO
“Right. Um…how does this thing work again?”

DOCTOR
“Oh it’s quite simple. You apply it around the edges of the plate until it detracts. And if it is a hatch like Billy says, we go down it.”

NYSSA
“It depends on what we’ll find if ‘we go down it’, Doctor.”

Alien gunfire echoes nearby.

BILLY
(anxiously) “Doctor! I heard gun fire!”

NYSSA
(realises) “Ogrons! That didn’t take them long to break through!”

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Jo! Apply the extractor and start demagnetising the plate! Quickly!”

JO
(determined) “Right!”

Jo applies the extractor to the plate and switches it on. A buzzing noise occurs as Jo demagnetises the plate. Ogron footsteps echo nearby.

BILLY
“Is it working?”

JO
(gradually) “Yes! I think it’s starting to come off!”

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa; Billy) “Billy; Nyssa! Be at the ready with those guns of yours! Just in case.”

NYSSA
“Yes Doctor!”

BILLY
“Right you are, Doctor!”

Nyssa and Billy get up from the floor and stand by, ready with their weapons and anticipating an attack from the Ogrons at any minute. The Ogron footsteps get closer. Jo continues to demagnetise the plate.

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Come on Jo, hurry!”

JO
“I’m working as fast as I can, Doctor!”

Eventually, the metal plate clicks to indicate that it is now fully demagnetised.

JO
(cheers) “Done it, Doctor; Nyssa; Billy!”

NYSSA
(pleased) “Well done, Jo! We knew we could count on you!”

Jo then gives the extractor back to the Doctor, to which the Doctor takes it from her.

JO
“Now! Let’s open and see what’s inside!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Let’s indeed, shall we?”

The Doctor and Jo gradually lift off the metal plate and open it to reveal a big hole in the platform floor. The two look to see a service tunnel below. The Ogron footsteps get closer and closer.

JO
“Doctor! Billy was right! This is a hatch! Where it leads, I don’t know!”

DOCTOR
(checks) “Nyssa; Billy! Any sign of those Ogrons?”

BILLY
“Not yet, Doctor!”

NYSSA
“But they are getting close!”

JO
“We go down then.”

DOCTOR
“We have to seal the hatch once we’re down there. We have to be quick though.” (to Jo) “Right, Jo! You go first!”

JO
(eagerly) “Right! Going down!”

Jo immediately gets into the service tunnel, climbing down and disappearing out of sight from the platform. As well as footsteps, there are grunts from the Ogrons getting ever closer.

DOCTOR
(gradually; calls) “Jo? Are you alright down there?”

JO
(reassuringly; calls from below) “I’m fine, Doctor! Send the next one down!”

DOCTOR
“Right!” (to Nyssa) “Nyssa, your turn!”

NYSSA
“No, Doctor! You go next! Billy and I will keep a lookout whilst you go down!”

DOCTOR
“Very well.”

The Doctor eventually gets into the service tunnel and climbs down after Jo. The Ogrons footsteps and grunts get louder by this point.

DOCTOR
(calls from below) “Right, Nyssa; Billy! I’m down here with Jo now. You get yourselves down here as well!”

BILLY
(calls back) “We’re coming, Doctor!”

NYSSA
(cries; anxiously) “Billy, look out!”

At that moment, the Ogrons appear and open fire with their weapons at Nyssa and Billy. Nyssa and Billy quickly fire back and shoot some Ogrons with their own weapons. The Ogrons groan and grunt as they fall once they’ve been shot.

BILLY
(cries) “Nyssa! Get yourself down into the hatch first!”

NYSSA
“No Billy, I’m not leaving you!”

BILLY
“Go Nyssa! For goodness sake, go!”

DOCTOR
(calls from below) “Nyssa, get down here will you!”

Reluctantly, Nyssa gets into the service tunnel and climbs down to join the Doctor and Jo. Billy continues to shoot at the Ogrons with his weapon. Thankfully, Billy manages to gun down all the Ogrons as they lie dead on the platform floor.

BILLY
(calls) “They’re down, Doctor! All of them down! I managed to get rid of these hooligans!”

NYSSA
(calls from below) “Billy, get down here at once now!”

JO
(calls from below) “Yes Billy, come on!”

DOCTOR
(calls from below) “Billy, I need to seal the hatch before any more Ogrons come! Get down here now!”

BILLY
“Right! I’m coming now!”

Eventually, Billy makes his way into the hole of the platform floor and climbs down to join the Doctor, Nyssa and Jo. As soon as Billy goes down the hatch, more Ogrons appear, led by Wrarshak and Kharshak. They see Billy going down the hatch once they appear.

WRARSHAK
(grunts) “There they are! Prisoners go down hole! They escape!”

KHARSHAK
(grunts) “Fire! Open fire! They not escape!”

The Ogrons open fire with their weapons, but they miss as the metal plate gets placed back on top to cover the hole on the platform floor.

WRARSHAK
(grunts; angrily) “Stop them! Stop them!”

The Ogrons reach the platform and try to break off the metal plate from the platform floor. But it’s no use as the metal plate has been magnetised already.

KHARSHAK
(grunts; angrily) “No good! Won’t move! Prisoners escaped!”

SCENE #65 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Sealing the metal plate tight with the magnetic core extractor, the Doctor prevents any Ogrons getting into the service tunnel to join him, Nyssa, Billy and Jo. The four breathe sighs of relief.

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Thank goodness! I’m glad I was able to seal that plate in time!”

NYSSA
“Those Ogrons are really brutish! They can’t always be like this!”

JO
“As matter of fact they are. But how they’re here, I don’t know.”

BILLY
“Well at least we won’t have them joining us for dinner tonight.”

NYSSA
“Where are we, Doctor? It’s quite a departure from London this place we’re in.”

DOCTOR
“I don’t know, Nyssa. But it’s quite fascinating. It’s brimming with light! Technology so advanced for its time! Vintage stuff!”

BILLY
“It reminds me of…I don’t know…the insides of a working clock!”

JO
“Yes! It does rather, doesn’t it? Only it’s gleaming with bright lighs and has some rather unusual design work to it.”

NYSSA
“Where is the light coming from? Such an array of spectrums!”

DOCTOR
“Let’s explore a bit, shall we?”

BILLY
“Are we safe now? From the Ogrons?”

DOCTOR
“Oh yes, definitely. They’re welcome to try and break in if they have the knowledge of disabling a magnetised metal hatchway.”

JO
“Which isn’t likely to happen, is it? I gave an Ogron a banana for his breakfast once. He didn’t know how to peel it first before I could tell him.”

NYSSA
“This place seems like a maze. I hope we won’t get lost down here.”

BILLY
“That’s quite likely I think, Nyssa. This blazing light! How will we manage to cope with it?”

DOCTOR
“Have no fear, Billy. The light shows us the way.”

JO
“That’s very philosophical of you, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Come on then! The future likes this way!”

The Doctor gets down off a ramp before he goes forwards through the maze. Nyssa, Billy and Jo follow him.

JO
“You know, this does seem familiar. I wish I could see through all this light.”

SCENE #66 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, EVENING
In the king’s throne room on Teruvada 16, the circuitry goes awry inside Bork and Tulu’s machine. Alarms go off and control lights are on the blink to indicate this.

BORK
(panics) “Oh no! This cannot be! This simply cannot be!”

ERNPIC
(annoyed) “What’s happened now?!”

TULU
“A system fault’s developed!”

GARNIK
“Already?”

BORK
“And at a time like this!” (Pause) “Still it’s probably nothing.”

KOVUT
“A second ago you were panicking about it!”

BORK
(to Kovut) “Oh no! Not panicking, no! Just a mere concern.” (to Tulu) “Where’s the fault, Tulu? Circuit four; five; six?”

TULU
“It’s in the central unit, Bork.”

BORK
(startled) “Central unit?! Not circuit four; five; six…?”

TULU
(stresses) “It is central unit, Bork! Something or someone’s broken in! Causing a security breach altogether.”

ERNPIC
(realises) “Those human spies! They’re the ones who caused this fault!”

GARNIK
“We can’t be certain of that, Ernpic!”

TULU
“We’ll have to do a systems check on the whole machine.”

BORK
“That could take hours, Tulu! Which we simply don’t have!”

KOVUT
“A pity. I was finding this demonstration so enlightening for a change.”

GARNIK
“Can’t you access what goes on in the central unit, Bork?”

BORK
“Well…we have inserted a new camera monitoring system in the inner workings of the machine as well as the environmental circuits. But you’ll find it a bit boring looking at the technical workings. Anyway it hasn’t been tested yet.”

KOVUT
“Then there’s no time like the present, is there?”

GARNIK
“Well said, Minister Kovut!”

TULU
(encouragingly) “Yeah come on, Bork. We can’t keep the suspense much longer from our audience, can we?”

BORK
(grudgingly) “Oh very well. I’ll switch the camera systems to central unit now. Just it give a few ticks and then…”

Bork flicks a number of switches to get the camera units inside the central unit working. They eventually see what they want to see on the monitor screen.

BORK
“There you are! Done it! Camera units working in the central unit!”

KOVUT
“Is this the main hub of your machine?”

BORK
“Indeed, sir. And as you can see, nothing to worry about! Completely safe!”

TULU
“The fault’s still there, Bork!”

ERNPIC
(realises; shouts) “The humans! Look!”

Everyone looks to see the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo on the monitor screen.

BORK
(shocked) “Those four Tellurians! They’ve managed to break in! They’re the cause of the security breach!”

ERNPIC
(shouts; angrily; to Bork) “As I suspected! You Bork are inconceivable; despicable; incompetent and…”

GARNIK
(interrupts; tells off) “Stop, my son!”

TULU
“I told you something like this would happen, Bork!”

ERNPIC
(angrily) “I want those humans killed! I demand satisfaction!”

GARNIK
“My son, calm down!”

ERNPIC
(enraged) “Calm down?! Don’t tell me to calm down, father! These people [are…”]

BORK
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, your majesty! Me and Tulu are seeing to this! We’ll see to it that these four Tellurians are stopped at once! Stopped immediately!”

Bork attends to the machine as Tulu comes beside him.

TULU
(whispers) “You’re not seriously thinking about killing them are you, Bork?”

BORK
(whispers) “Of course not, my dear. What do you think I am?”

TULU
(whispers) “Then how are you going to stop them as you so shrewdly put it?”

BORK
(whispers; dumbfounded) “I haven’t the faintest idea.”

Tulu sighs annoyed whilst Bork tries to be cheerful. Bork attends to the machine as Garnik, Ernpic and Kovut watch him suspiciously.

SCENE #67 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Meanwhile, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo search their way through the inner workings of the machine.

BILLY
“Crikey! This goes on forever!”

NYSSA
“There doesn’t seem to be any way out of this place.” (to Doctor) “I presume you know what we’re looking for, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Oh the usual, Nyssa. Air ducts; air vents. Something to give us an indication of the outside world.”

JO
“This can’t be the London underground surely. It’s too outlandish and alien.”

DOCTOR
“I suspect we’re no longer in London, Jo. This is an entirely different place.”

JO
“Not in London? Then where?”

DOCTOR
“I’m not sure. And if we don’t go on, I’ll never forgive myself not knowing.”

NYSSA
“Can you guess, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I can guess forever and come up with the wrong answer, Nyssa.”

BILLY
(realises) “Say! Isn’t that another metal plate? On the wall over there?”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo go over to the wall where the new metal plate is situated.

DOCTOR
“Well spotted, Billy!”

JO
“Yes Billy, well done!”

BILLY
(happily) “I knew my eye skills would come in handy.”

NYSSA
“So there is a way out after all.”

JO
“Use the magnetic core extractor again, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“You’re catching on, Jo. After all these years, I feel as if you’ve never left me.”

JO
“You don’t know how good that makes me feel to hear you say that, Doctor.”

BILLY
(eagerly) “Come on then! Let’s get open it already!”

Whilst they talk, a strange noise occurs and only Nyssa hears it.

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Ssh! Wait a moment!” (Pause) “What’s that?”

Very soon, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo turn to look up and see something open from above.

DOCTOR
“It sounds like the roof’s opening up above our heads!”

JO
“The roof?! That means someone’s found us!”

BILLY
“Thank goodness! Now we can really get some answers! Shall we call them?”

Billy steps forward before Nyssa stops and pulls him back.

NYSSA
“Billy, no!”

Suddenly, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo get a shock as a fork-like implement strikes down at them on the floorboards. The Doctor and his friends dodge out of the way as the fork-like implement keeps missing them when it strikes. Very soon, the fork-like implement stops striking the floorboards. A moment of silence ensues.

NYSSA
(concerned) “Billy, are you alright?!”

BILLY
(startled) “I think so. Thanks for pulling me back, Nyssa.”

JO
(shocked) “What was that though? It looked like giant scissors!”

DOCTOR
(wearily) “If you think that’s gigantic, see what’s coming!”

Nyssa and Jo gasp as they, with the Doctor and Billy, see a giant hand appears before them. The hand searches its way around.

JO
“A giant hand!”

NYSSA
“This is new!”

BILLY
“Are we in ‘giant country’ then? Like ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’?”

They watch as the giant hand continues to search its way around the inner workings.

NYSSA
“What’s it doing?!”

DOCTOR
“It’s searching for something. Us I think.”

Eventually, the giant hand stops searching and pulls out of the machine. A moment of tense silence ensues.

JO
(gasps) “That was…quite frightening! I’ve never felt so terrified in a long time!”

BILLY
“What was it though? And how come it stopped searching?”

NYSSA
“Perhaps it got tired and bored of the search. If that person…or giant was searching us…”

JO
“Thank goodness he stopped.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, well never mind about that now. Let’s attend to the matter in hand and get this hatch open, shall we?” (Pause) “Who wants to have a go with the extractor?”

NYSSA
“I’ll do it.”

Nyssa takes the magnetic core extractor from the Doctor and begins to demagnetise the metal plate on the wall. Billy and Jo look up again to make sure that there aren’t any more giants for them to deal with.

JO
“There aren’t any more giants now. Can’t see any large hands.”

BILLY
(realises) “Doctor, look up there!”

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “What is it, Billy?”

BILLY
“Look! See that!”

A moment of silence ensues.

JO
“Doctor, I may be seeing things, but I’m pretty certain there’s an eye looking down at us!”

BILLY
“Yes! That’s what I was going to call it! An eye!”

DOCTOR
(to Jo) “You’re not seeing things, Jo.” (Pause; to himself) “Interesting.”

SCENE #68 – INT – KING’S THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, EVENING
Back on Teruvada 16, Bork and Tulu do a systems check on their machine in the king’s throne room in the citadel of Grondor. Bork looks through the eye-scope of the machine.

BORK
(astonished) “Tulu, I can see them!”

TULU
“See who, Bork?”

BORK
“Those Tellurians! They’re about to break into another circuit!”

TULU
“Where? What circuit are they breaking into?”

BORK
(checks) “Err…circuit five, I believe. The ‘yanks’ one!”

TULU
“Yanks! Oh they should have a fun time in there!”

BORK
“Not if I have anything to do with it! I’ll have to send some Ogrons and Autons to deal with them.”

TULU
“Bork, you can’t have them chased forever by those goons.”

BORK
“Think about it, Tulu. If we succeed in this transaction with the Nargdu, we’ll be stinking rich! More credit bars on the way!”

TULU
“If we get the first deposit that is. We haven’t been paid yet, remember?”

BORK
“That is why I’ve got to sort out these Tellurians causing trouble. Having the Ogrons and the Autons sort them out may put the rest of the problems and the faults within the machine to rest.”

TULU
“But that’ll mean killing them! Those Ogrons and Autons chasing them! They’ll kill them instantly!”

BORK
“It’s not my fault if the Tellurians get killed by the Ogrons and the Autons, Tulu. They’ll have to fend for themselves.”

TULU
“But it’s your responsibility!”

King Garnik and Prince Ernpic overhear and interrupt Bork and Tulu’s conversation.

GARNIK
“You’re both disagreeing on something, Bork?”

BORK
(startled) “Oh no, your majesty! We’re just having a little debate on how to sort out these Tellurians. And I believe we’ve got the answer.”

ERNPIC
“Let us hear it then!”

BORK
(gradually) “At the moment, those four Tellurians are entering circuit number five. There’ll be more Tellurians waiting for them. But there’ll also be Ogrons; Autons; dinosaurs and robots waiting for them too!”

TULU
(shocked) “Dinosaurs and robots too?”

BORK
(ignores Tulu; to Garnik; Ernpic) “They’ll be there. And they’ll only have one thing on their minds. Killing those dastardly Tellurians for your majesties!”

GARNIK
“Very ingenious. You can do that with your machine?”

BORK
“Oh yes, your majesty! By transferring them from one circuit into another, they’ll be able to get to the Tellurian invaders and destroy them. I simply press these buttons to enable it.”

ERNPIC
“When can this operation be put into effect?”

BORK
“Immediately. Or whenever your dear father so desires, your majesty.”

TULU
“Bork, you can’t do this! You can’t!”

BORK
(to Tulu) “Tulu, I haven’t got a choice. I’ve got to do it in order to save our livestock; our machine and our income at the least.” (to Garnik) “What say you to this, your majesty?”

As Garnik considers, Kovut re-enters the room to meet them.

KOVUT
“Your majesties!”

GARNIK
“Kovut, where have you been?”

KOVUT
“I had to check up on current matters regarding the state and the war. The war situation has become worse!”

ERNPIC
(shocked) “What say you, Kovut?”

KOVUT
“The enemy is outside the gates, your highness! They’re about to break in! Battle is everywhere outside!”

Garnik and Ernpic become deeply worried whilst Bork and Tulu observe from a distance.

SCENE #69 – INT – CENTRAL UNIT, MINISCOPE – N/A
Meanwhile, in the inner workings of Bork and Tulu’s machine, Nyssa manages to demagnetise the metal plate on the wall with the magnetic core extractor. Very soon, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo begin to take the metal place off to break open the hatch inside.

BILLY
“Well done, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Billy! Now we can get out of this maze of mystery.”

DOCTOR
“Let’s take this steadily. We don’t know what we’ll meet on the other side.”

JO
“The TARDIS hopefully.”

BILLY
“And perhaps some explanation as to why we were attacked by a fork-like needle and a giant hand.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm.” (Pause) “Anyone wish to go in first?”

NYSSA
“I’ll go first.”

BILLY
“I’ll come behind you, dear.”

NYSSA
“To keep my back. Thank you Billy, but it’s not necessary.”

BILLY
“It makes me feel better.”

NYSSA
(coolly) “I know it does.”

Slightly amused, Nyssa enters into the hole in the wall before Billy follows in after her. Jo and the Doctor watch Nyssa and Billy as they enter inside.

JO
(to Doctor) “You could have had me and Cliff in the TARDIS as a couple, Doctor. Why didn’t you?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Let’s follow after them, shall we?”

Jo and the Doctor follow Nyssa and Billy into the hole in the wall. They eventually re-seal the metal plate behind them once they’re in.

SCENE #70 – EXT – ALLEYWAY, TIMES SQUARE – DAY, AFTERNOON
A short while later, Nyssa, Billy, Jo and the Doctor find themselves entering into an alleyway of a noisy street. Once out into the open from the inner workings, they take a look at their surroundings.

BILLY
(confused) “Doctor? This is the outside, isn’t it?”

DOCTOR
(uncertain) “Possibly.”

NYSSA
“You’re not sure, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Well…you can’t expect too much.”

JO
“It’s noisy out here.” (sniffs; disgusted) “And the stench is terrible!”

NYSSA
(sniffs; disgusted) “You’re right, Jo. I’ve never smelt anything so foul!”

BILLY
“This must be an alleyway of some kind. We’re not back in London, are we?”

DOCTOR
“It could be another city. Let’s have a look around, shall we?”

The Doctor heads off out of the alleyway with Nyssa, Billy and Jo following him.

SCENE #71 – EXT – TIMES SQUARE, MANHATTAN – DAY, AFTERNOON
The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo soon find themselves in the centre of a busy city square.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Ah! I thought the sounds and scents were familiar!”

NYSSA
“Doctor! This is a far busier city than London. More cars; more technology and more people.”

BILLY
(realises) “It’s New York! New York City!” (to Doctor) “Thanks, Doctor! This is exactly the sort of place I want to see!”

NYSSA
“We came here once before, didn’t we?”

BILLY
(to Doctor) “Thanks, Doctor! This is exactly the sort of place I want to see!”

DOCTOR
“This isn’t New York, Billy. Remember that?”

BILLY
“Hey? What’s that, Doctor?”

JO
“If we’re in New York, how did we travel thousands of miles from London in the UK to get here to America in the US? And without travelling in the TARDIS or going by plane.”

DOCTOR
“That is a very good question, Jo.” (Pause) “This feels more like ‘Alice In Wonderland’ every minute.”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo soon move out to explore the city further.

SCENE #72 – INT – MAIN HALL, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, EVENING
Back on Teruvada 16, in the main hall outside the king’s throne room in the Grondor citadel, Minister Kovut relates more information about the war situation to King Garnik and Prince Ernpic.

KOVUT
“Our supporting allies: Rhoa; River-Dell and Lothlor. They’re on their way but are slow in coming. It’ll be too late.”

ERNPIC
“Despicable! Too slow to fight for their king and empire! Glory to Empire!”

GARNIK
“My son, you will not speak so ill about our neighbouring allies like that. They suffer the same amount of problems as we do here.”

ERNPIC
“Their problems aren’t our concern. Grondor’s top priority! All help should come here! War should only come here!”

KOVUT
(to Garnik) “The defences are holding, your majesty. And our own troops are keeping it up with the fighting. But it’ll soon be futile and there’ll be no escape.”

GARNIK
“Then perhaps we should ask Bork to move the demonstration on a bit further.”

ERNPIC
(bitterly) “We should halt the petty demonstration altogether, father.”

GARNIK
“Bork and his assistant have a bargaining chip we can secure, my son.”

ERNPIC
“One of which you haven’t revealed, father. It is yet a mystery why you persist in this venture whilst the halls of our fathers, who were kings before you, are crumbling significantly.”

GARNIK
“Believe me when I say that this machine of Bork’s is the weapon to win the war.” (Pause) “I will say no more. But the more humans we have in that machine as well as monsters, then glory and triumph shall be greater for the Nargdu! Glory to Empire!”

ERNPIC
(baffled) “You speak in riddles, father. What does all this mean?”

GARNIK
“We must return to the throne room. I have an order to give to Bork.”

Garnik leads the way with Kovut following behind him. Ernpic lingers behind for a bit, sighing and annoyed, before he eventually follows his father.

SCENE #73 – INT – THRONE ROOM, CITADEL OF GRONDOR – DAY, EVENING
Back in the throne room, Garnik, Kovut and Ernpic return to meet with Bork and Tulu who attend to their machine.

GARNIK
“Well, Bork? What updates do you have?”

BORK
“Oh your majesty! I’m most deeply apologetic! Those Tellurians have broken into the circuit! Circuit five that is.”

TULU
“They’re now with the Yanks as predicted!”

ERNPIC
(scornfully) “You don’t take much care of your machinery, do you? Aliens!”

GARNIK
(to Bork) “Bork, you said you could send Ogrons and Autons into that circuit within a second.”

BORK
“Indeed, your majesty. By pressing these knobs, I can do it instantly!”

GARNIK
“Then in my name…in the king’s name…I command you to do so, Bork. Do it now!”

BORK
(gradually) “With pleasure, your majesty!”

Bork makes for the machine before Tulu tries to stop him.

TULU
(hisses) “No Bork, you can’t!”

BORK
“I have to, Tulu. There’s no other way.”

Tulu hesitates for a moment. Eventually she turns away distressed and aggrieved as Bork turns on the correct knobs and switches.

TULU
(sorrowfully) “I feel sorry for those Tellurians.”

Bork ignores her, whilst Ernpic and Kovut observe Tulu closely.

ERNPIC
(whispers; to Kovut) “You observe the female, Minister. She behaves very sympathetically for the humans.”

KOVUT
(whispers; to Ernpic) “I have observed her, your majesty. She displays traits favourable to humans.”

ERNPIC
(whispers; to Kovut) “Keep watch on her, Kovut. As I will. She is not to be trusted.”

Ernpic and Kovut keep watch on Tulu whilst Bork sets the machine.

SCENE #74 – EXT – 7TH AVENUE, MANHATTAN – DAY, AFTERNOON
In New York, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo walk around 7th avenue close to Times Square.

NYSSA
“This city can’t be real.” (to Doctor) “That’s what you’re thinking isn’t it, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“I’m not certain what to think, Nyssa. We need more information to work on.”

BILLY
“At least there are more people here. Makes a change from the empty London.”

JO
“This isn’t two thousand and thirteen! This is more nineteen fifties.”

DOCTOR
“I’m glad you noticed, Jo. Those inner workings we found ourselves in could have been some kind of transdimensional portal. In a very sophisticated and manufactured way.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, shouldn’t we be asking people for information?”

JO
“Can we just pick anybody?”

The Doctor approaches someone.

DOCTOR
(clears throat) “Excuse me! I say…excuse me!”

The Doctor however gets ignored as the people walk past him. He returns to Nyssa, Billy and Jo.

DOCTOR
“Hmm. Obviously not in a talkative mood these people.”

BILLY
“You’re obviously not trying hard enough, Doctor. Watch me, let me try.” (clears throat) “Hey, you! Can I talk to you for a moment? Please can I talk…?”

Billy however gets ignored too by the people who walk past him. He returns to the Doctor, Nyssa and Jo.

DOCTOR
(ruefully) “Well that was very tactful, Billy.”

BILLY
(confused) “I thought this only happened in films. When people ignored you. That something strange happened to them.”

NYSSA
“This is a strange business, Billy.”

DOCTOR
“Never trust to films, Billy. I’ve had to tell you that before, remember?”

Jo then goes over to talk to an American couple.

JO
(politely) “Excuse me!”

HILDA
“Hi, darling! What can we do you for?”

JO
“You wouldn’t happen to tell me…what the date is?”

MALCOLM
“The date?”

JO
“Sillykins. I’m very forgetful these days. Being old here, you see.”

HILDA
“It’s March the ninth, dear.”

JO
“And the year?”

MALCOLM
“The year?”

HILDA
“Why it’s nineteen fifty! Is everything alright, darling?”

JO
“Oh everything’s fine. And this is New York, isn’t it?”

MALCOLM
(threateningly) “Say! Are you trying to play around with us, dear lady?”

HILDA
(reproachfully; to Malcolm) “It’s alright, Malcolm!” (to Jo) “It is New York, dear. Have you just arrived?”

JO
“Yes. You could say that. Got jetlag.”

HILDA
“Ah. Well there’s a good old-fashioned diner if you get hungry, dear. It’s off forty-second street. You can’t miss it! The ‘Top Hat’ it’s called!”

JO
(graciously) “Thank you. You’ve been very helpful.”

HILDA
“Come on, Malcolm. Let’s get you back to our apartment.”

MALCOLM
“No, Hilda! Not the books again!”

Malcolm and Hilda walk ahead whilst Jo rejoins the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy.

JO
(happily) “Well, that seemed to go pretty well didn’t it?”

NYSSA
“Well done, Jo. You certainly gained their attention. With tact and everything.”

JO
“Oh I learn from the best. And I think women manage it so well than men.”

NYSSA
“I certainly agree.”

BILLY
(challengingly) “In that case, why didn’t you approach that couple like Jo did just now, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(teasingly) “She got there before me, Billy. I couldn’t get the chance.”

BILLY
(amused) “Ah. I see.”

A ripple of amusement occurs between Nyssa, Billy and Jo.

DOCTOR
“Anyway, we got the information we need so far. Now we know where to go next.”

NYSSA
“The Top Hat it is then. The American diner.”

Just then, screams echo nearby. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo turn around to see people scattering in the streets.

BILLY
(concerned) “Oh dear! Something’s upset them!”

JO
“They’re terrified! Why are they running away like that all of a sudden?”

Alien gunfire echoes from a distance.

NYSSA
(realises; shocked) “Doctor! That sounds like…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “Yes Nyssa, I heard. It seems like our friends are back!”

As the crowds scatter on 7th Avenue, the Ogrons turns up from a distance.

JO
(terrified) “The Ogrons! They’ve come back for us!”

BILLY
(realises; shocked) “And look! They’ve got company!”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo look to see as the Ogrons are accompained by the Autons. The Autons fire their wrist-guns about the place whilst the Ogrons open fire wih their weapons. The Doctor and his companions dodge the shots being fired at them.

NYSSA
(realises) “Those plastic men, Billy! The ones we saw in Oxford Street!”

DOCTOR
“The Autons! Ogrons and Autons – two attacking forces combined together. One wonders how they made this alliance.”

JO
(panics) “Never mind about that, Doctor! They’re going to kill us!”

NYSSA
(urgently) “We have to get away from here! Which way was the diner? Which way?!”

BILLY
“Over there! Down that road! We can’t miss it! It should lead us on the path to forty-second street!”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Then let’s move, you three! Run!!!”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jo make a run for it as they’re being chased by the Ogrons and the Autons firing their weapons at them.

Great episode, Billy reminds me a little of Ian Chesterton a character who seemingly although unwittingly gets drawn into the action & certainly gets put through the wringer lol.

I sense Jo is a little upset with the Doctor pressing him why he didn’t take her & Clifford in the Tardis, this is what makes good character drama & not just another make the tea & be in awe of the Doctor type compainion.

      Hi Simon.

      Glad you enjoyed this chapter.

Yeah well Billy does come from 1963 so I suppose traces of Ian Chesterton’s character can be found there. I also had Peter Parker from the original ‘Spider-Man’ movie trilogy as a template for Billy’s character during the story. He’s a reluctant but brave hero, especially when he wants to be with the Doctor and Nyssa in the TARDIS.

Interesting how you’ve noticed Jo seeming a little upset with the Doctor about why he didn’t take him and Cliff in the TARDIS. It was something that was echoed in ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ story ‘Death of the Doctor’ and I wanted to readdress it here. Glad you found that good character drama with the Doctor and his companions in this story.

Hope you enjoy the next chapter. I believe Corporal James is in it. 😀

      Tim. 🙂
