‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’, Part One, Chapter 1

1. Churchwood Street

Roll original 1982 Peter Davison opening credits.

SCENE #1 – EXT – WITCHON WOODS, CHURCHWOOD STREET – DAY, MORNING
It’s very early in the morning. Close to Churchwood Street in Cardiff are Witchon Woods. On top of a hill, 1960s music is being played from a portable radio. ‘If I Fell’ by the Beatles blares out loud. A young man named Sean Black sits about on top of the hill, looking over Churchwood Street. He sits about, as the music echoes in the wind. Eventually Sean switches the radio off and hears faint signs of life with people starting the day.

SEAN
(shrewdly) “That’s right. All of you wake up. The beginning of a new day. A new dawn.”

Moment of silence.

SEAN
(coldly) “How can this place be so small? The people I knew. The times I’ve spent.” (Pause) “It’s a wonder nobody else has tried to scare anyone.”

Sean’s thoughts are interrupted, as he then hears a whizzing sound. He stands up and looks up at the sky. A falling object zooms across the early morning sky.

SEAN
“Not a comet, hey?” (Pause) “Something else.”

Sean remains silent, as he watches the object heading off in the distance. He then heads off down the hill out of Witchon Woods.

SCENE #2 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile that morning, at No. 8 of Churchwood Street, Fred Walker exits his house to collect the milk. Before he goes back inside, he’s met by Danny Simmons who walks past.

DANNY
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t Freddie on his walkies.”

FRED
“Why hello, Danny! You look worse for wear.”

DANNY
“Oh I had a boozy night with the lads. Anyway, I’m as bright as a button.”

Despite this, Danny yawns loudly.

FRED
“So I see.”

Fred manages with some difficulty carrying the milk bottles. He puts them to one side.

FRED
“What are you doing out here anyway? Walking early in the morning isn’t your scene, is it?”

DANNY
(laughs) “You’re a fine one to talk, bud. I didn’t think this was your thing. Doing the woman’s work.”

FRED
“Hey! We’re taking it in turns to collect the milk. Besides, Enid’s not been well.”

DANNY
“Oh aye. With the um…”

FRED
“Yes.”

DANNY
“And err…anymore news on that front?”

FRED
“None. If we did we’d have it sooner rather than later.”

DANNY
“Ah that’s a shame. Sorry about that.”

FRED
(cheerfully) “Still, we live in hope.”

DANNY
“Well you’ll have to. If you going to survive ‘Little Miss Nasty’s’ visit.”

FRED
“Pardon?”

DANNY
“The demon woman. Mrs. Pratt. Well surely she’s planning a visit and check-up at your house.”

FRED
“How did you know about that?”

DANNY
(gradually) “Oh…just heard it in the pub. With the lads. They mentioned it. I hope you don’t mind.”

FRED
“No, no, of course not.” (Pause) “Amazing how the word goes round.”

DANNY
“Anyway, I’ve been sent by the wife…”

FRED
“Oh, the wife?”

DANNY
“Yeah. She’s asked me to send you an invite to my daughter’s wedding anniversary.”

Danny hands an invitation card to Fred, which he takes.

FRED
“Oh yes. It would have been a year since they married, wouldn’t it.”

DANNY
“Yes, that it would. We hope you’ll come. It’ll be at our place.”

FRED
“When is it?”

DANNY
“On the twenty-fourth of March.”

FRED
(thinks) “In that case we’d love to come. My wife and I.”

DANNY
“Splendid. I’ll let my wife know. She’ll be happy. We’ll have the fatted calf ready before the party.”

FRED
(laughs) “Yes. Get the fatted calf.” (Pause) “How is Alexandra?”

DANNY
“Oh she’s doing alright. Having problems with the housework, mortgage and everything. Balancing all that with her work in the pub. She can be moody. But she’s essentially a good girl at heart.”

FRED
“And Sean?”

DANNY
“Well he’s got a job with his dad’s company. So that’s something. Enough to satisfy his own trouble and strife.”

FRED
“They’re doing well with the ASR project. I’m happy to be working there.”

DANNY
“Oh yes.” (Pause) “See you around, Fred.”

Danny walks off, whilst Fred stands still in the doorway.

FRED
“Yeah. See you.”

Fred picks up the milk and goes back inside the house, closing the door behind him.

SCENE #3 – INT – DWAXI SHUTTLE, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, in a Dwaxi shuttle flying at top speed in the sky above Churchwood Street in Cardiff, Lord Ramga sits on a high chair. Pilots and technicians drive the ship, as ear-piercing buzzing noises echo in the ship’s interior, emanating from the control panels.

LORD RAMGA
(shouts) “Pilot! Pilot!!! Shut that stupid alarm off!!! I can’t stand it!”

DWAXI PILOT
(retorts) “Alright, alright, big mouth!!! I’m doing it! I’m shutting the alarm off!”

The Dwaxi pilot slams his fist on the ship’s pilot controls, switching the alarm off.

LORD RAMGA
“Don’t you big mouth me, boy!!! Don’t ever say that to your lord of…”

DWAXI PILOT
(retorts) “Blah, blah, blah! Don’t think I know that, my lord!”

Lord Ramga then smacks the pilot in the face. The Dwaxi pilot cries out loud in pain. Moment of bitter silence ensues.

LORD RAMGA
(bitterly) “What is our current status?” (Pause) “Inform me now!”

DWAXI PILOT
(bitterly) “My lord, we’ve escaped velocity and have now arrived! In universe two-one-five.”

LORD RAMGA
“Well done, you bozos! Expect a compliment of nourishment within the hour!”

A lot of rowdy Dwaxi troopers cheer and chant out ferociously.

LORD RAMGA
“Alright, alright! Shut it will you, you lot! Get on with your work!”

The Dwaxi troopers grumble and moan.

LORD RAMGA
“Shut up, you punks! Get on with it! Or I’ll report you lot to the Directors!”

Eventually, the Dwaxi troopers pipe down.

DWAXI PILOT
“We’re passing over Earth Sector two-four-zero-four where Commander Zurlt is.”

LORD RAMGA
“Alright, alright! Don’t have to tell me that, smart alec!” (Pause) “Right! Send a priority one message to that area and inform Commander Zurlt to contact me! And don’t slack! Alright?!”

DWAXI PILOT
(bitterly) “No, sir! I won’t slack, sir!”

Lord Ramga smacks the Dwaxi pilot on the head. The Dwaxi pilot reacts in bitter contempt.

LORD RAMGA
(self-satisfied) “I’m going to my chamber. If anyone disturbs me, Get stuffed!!!”

Lord Ramga leaves the command deck. Pilots and technicians laugh and jeer at him as he goes. They become even more rowdy, misbehaving shamelessly once he’s gone. A loud scream of rage echoes from inside Lord Ramga’s chamber. A tense moment of silence ensues.

SCENE #4 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, Sean Black comes out of a newsagent and walks on Churchwood Street. He carries a shopping bag containing items before he meets up with John Graham going in the opposite direction. John smokes a cigarette.

JOHN
(calls) “‘Ere, Sean! What’s your game?”

SEAN
(puzzled) “Don’t know what you’re talking about, mate?!”

JOHN
“That music blaring on the hill. Woke me up stiff.”

SEAN
“What? Not a follower of Beatle music then? Shame on you, John. The ladies will go livid.”

JOHN
“The Beatles I can handle. What I can’t handle is you waking me up at the crack of dawn playing that dratted song at full volume. Got some urge to wake everyone up with a big loud alarm clock, have you?”

SEAN
“My business is my own, John. Don’t bother prying.”

JOHN
“Suit yourself. I only protest. I shall let the noise abatement society know.”

SEAN
“Do what you like, mate. I always look for trouble.”

JOHN
“Just you watch it.”

John then puffs on his cigarette.

JOHN
(to Sean) “Fancy a fag?”

SEAN
“Don’t smoke, mate.”

JOHN
“Fair enough. No point in bothering wasting them.”

John throws his cigarette onto the floor and stamps on it once he’s finished with it. He makes a loud cough, before taking out and lighting another one.

JOHN
“Well that’s me done. I’m off to the builder’s yard. Shame you didn’t carry on with that, Sean.”

John makes his way to the builder’s yard, whilst Sean watches him go.

SEAN
(calls) “You know if everyone were addicted to those ciggys you have, what would the world be like.”

JOHN
(chuckles) “Like I give a monkeys what happens to the world.”

SEAN
“There’s bound to be someone coming along and providing the everlasting cigarette. One that can never burn out.”

JOHN
“You what?”

SEAN
“Or maybe it’s not a cigarette. Maybe it’s something that keeps us bursting with energy. Like what you get in fizzy drinks and kid’s stuff like sweets and chocs. Except this nifty is a little stronger.”

JOHN
(thinks) “You’ve been having a tough time with your beloved, haven’t you?”

SEAN
“What’s it to you? Hey?!”

JOHN
“Just saying. What I hear from others.” (Pause) “Tra!”

John goes off smoking his cigarette, whilst Sean walks away and chuckles. He heads off home, acting mischievously.

SCENE #5 – INT – LIVING ROOM, NO. 8 – DAY, MORNING
In the living room of No. 8, Churchwood Street, Enid Walker makes a phone call. She becomes anxious, patiently waiting as the phone rings at the other end. It lasts for a number of seconds.

ENID
(impatiently; through phone) “Oh come on! Pick up!”

Enid sighs, as she waits for someone to respond. Eventually…

ENID
(eagerly; through phone) “Hello! It’s me, Enid. Enid…” (Pause) “Oh…you guessed. Well, this is my regular check-up.” (Pause) “Yes, I understand.” (Pause) “Yes I realise that…but have you had any news?”

At that moment, Fred enters and finds Enid on the phone.

FRED
(puzzled) “Enid? Are you ringing…?”

ENID
(to Fred) “Ssh!” (through phone) “Hmm? No not you, I was talking to my husband.” (Pause) “So have you heard anything?” (Pause) “You’re sure about that?” (Pause) “You’re not just saying these things to shut me up, are you?”

Fred prods Enid.

FRED
“Enid, dear?”

ENID
(to Fred) “Hush a minute.” (through phone) “I’m not trying to be funny. I’m deeply anxious. I just feel that I’m not getting much attention with the whereabouts of my son?!” (raises voice) “And I don’t want anybody to ignore us!”

FRED
“Enid, stop!”

Enid stops, almost as if she’s about to burst into tears. She then talks again into the phone.

ENID
(sobs; through phone) “Please, please, please! Help me find my son! Our son!”

Moment of silence.

ENID
(sniffs; through phone) “Alright then. Same time tomorrow?”

Eventually, Enid puts the phone down and replaces it on the receiver. She becomes silent whilst Fred looks her over.

FRED
(gently) “Pestering them won’t get us anywhere, Enid. They’ll do the best they can remember?”

ENID
“It’s been too long, Fred. I don’t think I can stand this anymore.”

FRED
“Enid, there’s always hope.”

ENID
(shrieks) “Hope?! What hope is there anymore?!”

Enid cries bitterly, as she buries her face in her hands.

ENID
(muffles, sobs) “I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry, Fred!”

FRED
“Oh Enid!”

Fred goes over to Enid; sits by her and cradles her in his arms. Enid cries in Fred’s chest, whilst he holds her.

SCENE #6 – INT – LIVING ROOM, GLASS & HOUND – DAY, MORNING
At No. 16 of Churchwood Street where the Glass & Hound pub is, Alexandra Black is seated in the living room. She ticks things off on a checklist whilst the news on the telly is on. The front door then opens and Alexandra stops ticking off her checklist, placing it on the coffee table. Her husband, Sean Black enters. Sean stands in the doorway, staring at his wife whilst she remains seated in the living room.

SEAN
(cheerfully) “Been waiting up for me, have you?”

Sean gets no response.

ALEXANDRA
(calmly) “So…here you are.”

SEAN
(casually) “Here I am.” (Pause) “You got up early.”

ALEXANDRA
(grimly) “Obviously. Had to check our wedding anniversary preparations.”

SEAN
“Oh yes. Our wedding anniversary.” (chuckles) “You know…it feels only like yesterday it happened.”

ALEXANDRA
(calmly) “Where have you been, Sean? I found your side of the bed not slept in when I woke.”

SEAN
(gradually) “Just been out with the lads. Been a bit late, that’s all.”

ALEXANDRA
(bitterly) “A bit late?! Not enough time to spend with your wife then?”

SEAN
“A man’s entitled to a few pints with his mates isn’t he, love?”

Moment of silence.

ALEXANDRA
“What else have you been doing?” (Pause) “Go on, tell me!”

SEAN
“I’ve had to take on a few assignments for my dad.”

ALEXANDRA
“At that time of night?”

SEAN
(shrugs) “It was short notice. If you want me to keep this house of ours, then you must…”

ALEXANDRA
“You better had not been seeing any other woman with the guys!”

SEAN
(laughs) “As if I would.”

ALEXANDRA
“You’d better not. I’ve got to open the pub in an hour and I’d rather not waste my time covering up your mistake.”

SEAN
“Then don’t. I haven’t asked you to.”

ALEXANDRA
(moodily) “No need.”

SEAN
(giggles) “I love it when you’re moody, deary!” (Pause) “Now, anything good on the telly?”

Alexandra lets out an angry moan, before getting up from her seat and leaving the room.

SEAN
“Don’t I get a good morning kiss, sweetie?”

Alexandra slams the door behind her. Sean is left in the room, chuckling to himself as he changes channel on telly and sits on the sofa.

SCENE #7 – INT – LIVING ROOM, NO. 8 – DAY, MORNING
Back with Enid and Fred in No. 8, Churchwood Street, they sit quietly together on the sofa in their living room. They have the news on the telly regarding the Aqua Systems Revival project, whilst Enid is continually being comforted by her husband. She sniffs and remains worried.

FRED
“Enid, please try not to worry about it. You’ve been worried sick ever since he disappeared. Surely you can think of something else to keep it off your mind. It’s driving me mad the way you worry.”

ENID
“Oh I see. So I’m driving you mad, am I? Becoming a nuisance, am I?”

FRED
“I didn’t mean that. You know I didn’t mean that.”

ENID
“Aren’t you worried, Fred?”

FRED
“Of course I’m worried, dear. Worried every day. Frightened by the fact that it’s not like him. Disappearing off the face of the earth.”

ENID
“I can’t put my mind at rest until I know what’s happened to him.”

FRED
“Well you may have to, you know. For all we know…” (gradually) “For all we know, he may never come back.”

ENID
“Don’t say that! Don’t you ever say that to me again, Fred!”

FRED
“I’m only saying…” (Pause) “The important thing is not to lose our heads.” (Pause) “He wouldn’t want us to lose our heads now, would he?”

Moment of silence.

ENID
(sniffs) “I’ll try my best. It won’t be easy, but I’ll try.”

FRED
(reassuringly) “Good.” (Pause) “Now…have we got any plans lined up this week? We can take a day out if you like. Go somewhere.”

ENID
(thinks) “You know we’ve got that awful lady Mrs. Pratt coming over to our house tomorrow.”

FRED
(dismayed) “Oh yes. I’m doing my best to forget about that.” (Pause; realises) “Oh that reminds me! Danny Simmons came over this morning.”

ENID
“Oh. What did he want?”

FRED
“He’s invited us to his daughter’s wedding anniversary later this month. And I err…more or less said ‘yes’. If that’s alright?”

ENID
(shocked) “What?! You said ‘yes’?”

FRED
“Well I could hardly say ‘no’, could I? He was there when I collected the milk.”

ENID
(angrily) “Oh really. The utter nerve and cheek of the man. Forcing an invitation on us like that.”

FRED
(gently) “Now Enid.”

ENID
“That family’s caused nothing but trouble for us. Especially that stuck-up nose daughter of theirs. She could have been responsible for…”

FRED
“Now that’s not fair…”

ENID
(angrily, raises voice) “If she hadn’t been so cruel in the way she…”

Enid then realises the extent of what she’s said and becomes silent for a moment, before bursting into tears. She gets up from the sofa and leaves the room. Fred watches her go, feeling disturbed.

FRED
(sighs) “Oh dear.”

Fred then stands up and goes over to the television set.

FRED
“Let’s see what’s on the other channel.”

He does this before sitting back on the sofa again.

SCENE #8 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – NIGHT
That night, Churchwood Street is deserted. Out on patrol is Bruce Simmons, a police constable of the local community. He whistles away whilst he walks on the pavement. He then stops to hear glass smashing. A cat mews nearby.

BRUCE
(dismissively) “Argh! Cats! Who’d have them?”

Bruce continues walking whilst whistling. He then shivers, feeling the cold.

BRUCE
(shivers) “Cor – ain’t half nippy! Wish I wasn’t out on the beat tonight.” (Pause; chuckles) “Careful now, Brucey. You’ll go mad talking to yourself.”

Bruce then hears more glass smashing.

BRUCE
“Cats again?”

Then some rowdy shouts and yells echo far off.

BRUCE
“Then again not.” (Pause) “A bunch of kids more like. Coming from over there.”

Bruce makes his way over to check what it’s all about.

SCENE #9 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – NIGHT
Outside the Glass & Hound, a group of youths – rockers and mods – are fighting each other at the pub entrance. Some of them chant to fight further, whilst a small bunch fight amongst themselves. Bruce arrives at the scene to see the mods and rockers fighting.

BRUCE
(shouts) “Oi! What’s going on here?!”

The rockers and mods ignore Bruce and keep on fighting. Bruce makes his way forward to intervene.

BRUCE
(shouts) “Alright! Stop right there!”

MOD
“Watch out! Here’s a beadle!”

ROCKER
“Yeah! He’s coming!”

Despite Bruce’s attempts to intervene, they keep on fighting.

BRUCE
(shouts) “I said, stop right there!”

A mod named Rick and a rocker named Keith notice Bruce and push him off roughly.

KEITH
(yells) “What do you think you’re doing, hey?!”

RICK
(yells; bitterly) “You stay out of this, beadle! Back off!”

Bruce gets back onto the scene and tries to intervene again.

BRUCE
“Enough of that! You’re disturbing the peace!”

KEITH
(shouts) “Rick said ‘back off’!!!”

A few rockers including Keith push Bruce out of the way very roughly. Bruce ends up on the floor. Startled, Bruce immediately gets back onto his feet and intervenes one more time.

BRUCE
(flustered) “Right! That does it! You lot are coming with me! You’re in the nick this time! Do you know that?!”

RICK
(mockingly) “Oh! So we’re in the nick now, are we?!”

KEITH
(cruelly) “Yeah? Well nick this, scum!”

Keith punches Bruce in the face, whilst another rocker pounds him in the stomach. They then push him to one side onto the wall. Bruce reacts in agony, marvelled at the rockers and mods’ lack of disrespect and contempt as they jeer mockingly at him.

BRUCE
(astonished) “You can’t do that to me! I’m an officer of the law!”

RICK
“Shut it, ratbag!”

KEITH
“Do we look like we care about law?!”

RICK
(cries) “Fellas! Take him!”

KEITH
(cries) “Get in there, boys!”

The rockers and mods howl and jeer rowdily, as they charge on Bruce. Bruce attempts to run away, before he’s jumped on by all of them. Each of them beats Bruce up viciously and without mercy, as he cries out in pain.

BRUCE
“Stop it! Stop it, you rabble!!!”

But the mods and rockers ignore Bruce.

RICK
(cruelly) “How do you like that, blue bottle?!”

KEITH
(mockingly) “Yeah. Not so tough now, are you?!”

RICK
(cries) “Harder, boys!” (shouts) “Hit him harder!!!”

The mods and rockers beat up Bruce even more. Bruce finds himself unable to escape or defend himself. Helpless, Bruce becomes angry as they beat him up.

BRUCE
(shouts; angrily) “You louts won’t get away with this! I’ll see to that! I’ll have you all behind bars!”

KEITH
(coyly) “Well…we can’t have that, can we?!”

Keith then pulls out a sharp dagger and holds it in his hand.

BRUCE
(shocked) “What are you doing?!”

RICK
“Go on then, grubby! What are you waiting for?! Stab him with it!”

MODS/ROCKERS
(chants) “Stab him! Stab him! Stab him! Stab him! Stab him! Stab him…”

With all mods and rockers chanting away, Keith raises his dagger, ready to lunge it into Bruce.

BRUCE
(cries, pleads) “Stop!!! No!!!”

But Keith howls and stabs Bruce in the chest. Bruce gasps for breath, whilst Keith keeps on stabbing Bruce over and over.

KEITH
(jeers) “How do you like that, mate?!”

RICK
(shouts) “Yeah. How do you like that?!”

Bruce groans, as he loses consciousness and stumbles to the floor. The mods and jeers laugh and jeer at Bruce on the floor.

SCENE #10 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – NIGHT
In another part of Churchwood Street, Maria Black and her boyfriend Ryan Donner arrive. They carry luggage, as they make their way into the street.

RYAN
(groans) “How much longer do we have to keep on walking?! My legs are aching since we left that station.”

MARIA
“Oh give over your moaning, you big idiot. We’re nearly there. We’ll just spend a night at a B and B and call my parents later when they’re at home. I haven’t heard from them in a long time nor spoken to them.”

RYAN
“Maria? Do you know why they want you back for?”

MARIA
“I haven’t the foggiest. Mum just sent me a letter regarding a certain something she has for me. I suppose I’ll find out sooner or later.”

RYAN
“Yeah. Here’s hoping your parents will like me when they see me.”

MARIA
(reassuringly) “Oh, Ryan. They’ll love you and adore you as much as I do.”

They stop, as they both embrace and give each other a kiss whilst in the street. They eventually stop kissing and continue walking.

RYAN
“I hope you’ll convince them how much it takes me to carry this luggage.”

MARIA
(giggles) “I’d like them to see the strong man I have.”

Ryan laughs, whilst he and Maria continue walking.

MARIA
“Ah! Here we are! There’s one B and B over there!”

RYAN
“Let’s go inside before it gets cold!”

Maria and Ryan move forward, as they approach the B&B. Suddenly they’re stopped in their tracks. Rick the mod and Keith the rocker appear and block their path.

RYAN
(startled) “You guys didn’t half give us a scare.”

KEITH
(bitterly) “Scum; rotter; snob; scarab!”

MARIA
“Oi! What are you playing at?! Let us pass!”

RICK
(bitterly) “You two scurvies aren’t going away!”

RYAN
“Now see here…”

Keith holds out a dagger to threaten Ryan. Ryan backs away.

RYAN
“That’s a razor sharp dagger you’ve got there!”

MARIA
“Please! We’ve had a long journey!”

KEITH
“Don’t you two get it?! We’re the bad ones here!”

RICK
“We’re going to kick your butts if you don’t get inside!”

A struggle ensues, as Ryan manages to knock Keith’s dagger out of his hand and picks it up from the floor.

MARIA
“Well done, Ryan!”

KEITH
(angered) “You knocked my dagger out of my hand!”

RYAN
(triumphantly) “That’s right, mate! You’d better start running before I call the…”

RICK
(cries) “Boss! Get over here! We need help!”

MARIA
(pleads) “Just leave us alone, will you?!”

RYAN
“If you two don’t scarbor, I shall have you…”

KEITH
(yells) “Boss!!! Get over here, will you?!!!”

MARIA
“Will you stop shouting…?”

Just then, a teleport takes place. Two Dwaxi materialise. They are Probationer Mullog and a Dwaxi trooper. They stomp their way towards Maria and Ryan, whilst Rick and Keith back away.

MULLOG
(shouts) “What is this all about?! What have you bozos called me here for?! Answer!!!”

Maria and Ryan look on terrified to see the two Dwaxi.

MARIA
(cries) “Ryan! Don’t just stand there! Do something!”

RYAN
(astonished) “What in the name of heaven…?!”

MULLOG
(yells; angrily) “Trooper!”

The Dwaxi trooper steps forward, charging his rifle ready. Ryan backs away.

MULLOG
(yells; angrily) “Kill him!!! Spill his guts out!!!”

MARIA
(cries) “No!!!”

The Dwaxi trooper fires furiously at Ryan with tremendous anger and rage. Hundreds of gunshots fire out. Ryan shakes and shudders, as his body convulses. Ryan stumbles and falls to the ground dead. Maria screams once this happens. Mullog lets out a callous, approving laugh.

MULLOG
(laughs; callously) “Good! I love it when I see them making a blood bath!!!”

MARIA
(screams; upset) “You killed him! You killed the man I love! You killed him!!! You killed him!!!”

Maria rushes forward towards Mullog angrily, before she gets caught by Rick and Keith.

MULLOG
(bitterly) “Shut up, you girl!”

Mullog spits in Maria’s face at which she reacts in horror and disgust.

MULLOG
(contemptuously) “No-one cares about you! Fortunately for you, you’re needed alive! Why I do not know! Considering you’re such as weak female…”

MARIA
(bitterly) “You chauvinist pig!”

MULLOG
(continues) “The Directors need you alive! And that’s what we shall do regarding our orders!” (to Keith; Rick) “Take her inside the house!”

KEITH
“Right!” (to Maria) “Inside you!”

Upset and shattered, Maria is forced inside the B&B by Rick and Keith.

MULLOG
(to Dwaxi trooper) “Trooper! Leave the body outside! Let it rot!”

The Dwaxi trooper obeys, as Mullog goes inside the house following Rick and Keith. Ryan Donner’s corpse remains crumbled and dead on the ground, as the cold night air continues.

SCENE #11 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – NIGHT
A Dwaxi base of operations is situated underneath Churchwood Street. Many Dwaxi troopers and technicians work busily. The leader of the Dwaxi group is Commander Zurlt. He works with his fellow officers, Instigator Kolgu and Navigator Bolesh (who is female). Kolgu stands with Zurlt in the ops room whilst Bolesh works hard at a computer console.

ZURLT
(roughly) “How’s the night operation progressing, Instigator Kolgu?”

KOLGU
“Going according to plan, Commander Zurlt. Squadron groups investigating power areas are instigating tasks as instructed.”

ZURLT
(grimly) “That sounds well, Instigator.”

Kolgu makes to leave.

KOLGU
“I shall go and see how operations…”

ZURLT
(interjects) “I did not say ‘dismissed’, Kolgu!”

KOLGU
(moans) “Oh, come on! Give a guy a break! I need my nourishment!”

ZURLT
“Exactly! Treatment is very low. The Directors shall send us a despatch of new stock for our troops. Remind everyone that they need to carry out commands for their leaders without any bickering or squabbling during operations.”

KOLGU
(contemptuously) “Alright then!”

ZURLT
“And don’t use that tone of voice with me, Kolgu!”

KOLGU
“I’ll use any tone of voice I like. I can spit and sprawl on your face if I want to!”

Just then, an alarm goes off as Bolesh picks something up from her workstation.

BOLESH
“Commander, sir? We have incoming report from Churchwood night watch!”

ZURLT
(grimly) “About time. What does Probationer Mullog report?”

BOLESH
“Pub fight was caused outside the pub Glass and Hound. One policeman suffered fatal wounds which are likely to kill him.”

KOLGU
(thrilled) “Brilliant! I love the sound of a man dying!”

ZURLT
“It’s fortunate he did not detect our secret hideout. So lucky we are to have mods and rockers.” (snaps) “Give me the rest, Navigator Bolesh.”

BOLESH
(continues) “Apprehension of Maria Black successful. She has arrived and is in the designated housing area now. She will be injected with treatment.”

ZURLT
(contemptuously) “Were there any problems, Bolesh?”

BOLESH
“Male obstacle. But it has been dealt with. Trooper designated to Mullog has eliminated male obstacle in an atrocious display.”

KOLGU
(groans) “Oh how dreadful! I wanted to see guts and gore tonight. And I’m stuck here with nothing else to do but be bored! Bored; bored; bored!!!”

ZURLT
“Shut up, Kolgu!”

KOLGU
“Make me!”

Zurlt punches Kolgu in the face. Kolgu is about to punch back, but restrains himself as he realises.

ZURLT
(gloats) “That’s right, Instigator. Remember where you are. I am your commander.”

Kolgu remains silent and becomes bitter, whilst Zurlt turns back to Bolesh.

ZURLT
(impatiently; to Bolesh) “Patch me a video-link with his lordship Ramga! I have to give him this report! Get me that video-link this instant!”

BOLESH
“Yes, commander.”

Zurlt goes off to report to Lord Ramga, whilst Bolesh works on patching a video-link for the commander.

SCENE #12 – INT – BASEMENT, INTEROR OF B&B – NIGHT

MULLOG
“Hold her still, you two!”

In the B&B, Maria struggles as she’s being held captive by Rick and Keith. Mullog prepares to inject her with a drug. He eventually finishes preparing the drug and brings it over to Maria.

MULLOG
“This will be the beginning of your death!” (laughs) “The end of your old life! And the beginning of another! Victory is come!”

MARIA
(bitterly) “You ratbag can just back off! Now let me go!”

MULLOG
“You! Hold her neck firmly!”

Keith holds Maria still, whilst Rick exposes her neck to Mullog and holds her still.

MARIA
(terrified) “W-W-What are you doing?” (Pause) “No! Please don’t! Don’t do to this me! Don’t!!!”

Mullog raises the syringe and places the needle on Maria’s neck.

MARIA
(gradually; screams) “No! No! No! No!!! No!!! No!!! Oh please, no!!! Don’t do this!!! No!!! No!!! No!!!”

But Maria gets injected with the drug. The whole drug gets injected and Maria passes out. She drops to the floor like a lifeless corpse. Mullog, Rick and Keith look down on her, laughing mockingly.

RICK
(laughs; mockingly) “She’s fallen to the floor, hasn’t she?! Weak thing of a girl!”

KEITH
(laughs; mockingly) “This happened just like it did to us, didn’t it?! When we were worthless!”

MULLOG
(laughs; mockingly) “When the girl wakes up, we shall be victorious! Harm and chaos shall begin!”

Mullog, Rick and Keith continue being self-satisfied with themselves, whilst Maria remains lifeless.

Stone the flaming crows Tim, this is one of your darkest stories & i only yet read chapter one, Ryan brutally shot to death, Bruce viciously beaten & stabbed you gone very Eric Saward here Tim lol, Bruces attack i felt the pain, the helplessness & his despair that scene gave me shivers that shows the strengths of your writing whenone gets a emotional or physical reaction.

You captured the mods & rockers vibe perfectly & only you could write a chapter to not feature the Doctor & companions & yet make it a gripping intriguing intense opener, the missing son plot is intriguing there’s got to be a connection with another character perhaps?, Sean i already hate he’s a a..hole disrespectful to his wife & rude to his neighbours, maybe you’ll change this characters perspective when he meets the Doctor?

Loving this Tim, you are a fantastic writer & certainly know how to hook in the reader, I’m going to try & read a chapter or two a day.

      Hi Simon.

Very pleased you enjoyed Chapter 1 of ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’.

Yeah, this is a darker story compared to what I usually write in my ‘Doctor Who’ stories. It’s even darker than ‘Doom of the Daleks’. There are moments of humour to be found in this story, but I wanted to address the serious issues featured in ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’ seriously. Yeah I have gone Eric Saward in this ‘Doctor Who’ story. I don’t know whether this would be accepted to be shown on the TV. If Big Finish adapted this story, they’d probably ask me to tone down the violent aspects such as Ryan’s death and Bruce’s stabbing. I’m glad you felt shivers from reading those scenes.

I’m not sure if I have got the mod and rockers vibes right in this story, but I’m glad you seem to find it ‘perfect’. Yeah I wanted to do the same as I’d done with ‘Doom of the Daleks’, by setting up the supporting characters in the first chapter and not feature the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy. Don’t worry. The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy make their appearance early on from the start of Chapter 2.

Wow! You loathe Sean already and it’s just the first chapter you’ve read. It’s like the Colin character from ‘Doom of the Daleks’ again. I’m sure you’ll find Sean an interesting character as you progress further on in the story. Yeah with the missing son plot…well, I’ll let you read on to find out what it’s about. 😀

Thanks for your comments, Simon. Glad you enjoyed Chapter 1 of ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’. Hope you’ll enjoy Chapter 2 next. See you there.

      Tim. 🙂

      Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed re-reading the chapter and that you enjoyed the character drama featured in the story so far.

I would like Big Finish to adapt these stories for audio so that Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton can enjoy reading their dialogue. I’d like to think they would approve of the material I’d give to them as their characters of the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa.

Thanks for sharing this story to another friends of yours who’s a ‘Doctor Who’ fan. I’m pleased he found this ‘gripping stuff’.

      Tim. 🙂
