‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’, Part One, Chapter 3

3. “Fish and Chips!”

SCENE #24 – EXT – WITCHON WOODS, CHURCHWOOD STREET – DAY, MORNING
In Witchon Woods, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy make their way to Churchwood Street. They savour the fresh air.

BILLY
“It seems to be a nice day today. Nice day to come home. Fresh air, billowing clouds, warm sun.”

NYSSA
(content) “I like these woods. How we managed to end up in this beautiful place I can’t tell.”

Meanwhile, the Doctor uses his gadget to scan the area. It emits a low hum.

NYSSA
“Doctor, what is that gadget of yours? It looks very dated and tatty.”

DOCTOR
“This is a temporal oscillation displacer, Nyssa. And it’s not dated and tatty.”

BILLY
“And what’s a temporal oscillation displacer when it’s at home, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“It detects energy particles generated by a space-time field. Essentially it pinpoints any weaknesses within the boundaries of reality and whether it’s connected to the crack in the fabric of space and the time continuum.”

BILLY
(at a loss) “Oh I see. Very intriguing.”

NYSSA
“You’re trying to detect how wide the rift perimeter boundaries are, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“More than that. I’m hoping to detect any other areas that have been affected or bathed in space-time. Other areas in Cardiff likely to be in critical stages of temporal collapse.”

BILLY
“What…other areas as well as Witchon Woods?”

NYSSA
“Is that where we are? Witchon Woods?”

BILLY
“Yes.”

NYSSA
(to Doctor) “Isn’t there a likely possibility that your calculations can be counteracted by the rift energies being emitted, Doctor? Somebody could be causing the rift to crack open time eddies more frequently by technological means.”

DOCTOR
“That’s why I’m keeping the displacer in my pocket switched on and waiting for something else to happen.”

NYSSA
“If it goes off in your pocket, it may cause a distraction.”

DOCTOR
“Nonsense. I never draw attention to myself.”

The Doctor slips the device in his pocket, patting it as he walks on with Nyssa and Billy beside him.

BILLY
(apprehensively) “I feel nervous about this. Heading back into my own neighbourhood. Knowing that I’ve been everywhere across space and time.”

NYSSA
“It’s alright, Billy. I know what it’s like to revisit a place you’ve left behind.”

BILLY
“Oh yes I remember, Nyssa. We visited your home planet at its beginning didn’t we? We were there when it happened.”

NYSSA
“Yes. I remember visiting Traken then. But I also visited Traken during its primeval time…”

BILLY
“Yes I remember you telling me that, Nyssa. When we visited Riverloth. How did that happen again? How did you come to be on Traken in its primeval age?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Well…I suppose it all happened when I first fainted in the TARDIS. The Doctor took us to the planet Deva-Loka where….”

Nyssa tells Billy her story during the events of ‘Kinda’ and ‘Primeval’, whilst they and the Doctor continue their journey to Churchwood.

SCENE #25 – INT – MAIN HALL, GLASS & HOUND – DAY, MORNING
In the Glass & Hound pub, Helen Black is with Mrs. Pratt. They talk whilst Alexandra’s serving.

MRS. PRATT
“I’ve been hearing that a murder has been committed outside Forshaw’s B and B recently, Mrs. Black.”

HELEN
“How do you know that, Mrs. Pratt? I only heard about it this morning.”

MRS. PRATT
“I have my sources. It’s no good, you know. All these youngsters getting addicted to fashion, alcohol and motorcycling. It’ll be the death of them.”

HELEN
“Alexandra’s brother was injured last night by a group of thugs.”

MRS. PRATT
“Was he now? How shocking!”

HELEN
(to Alexandra) “Alex! We were just talking that Bruce is in hospital after last night when a group of thugs attacked him. Is that right?”

ALEXANDRA
(moodily) “Yes I suppose it is. So my mum and dad told me.”

Alexandra irritably dumps the glasses for Helen and Mrs. Pratt on the bar.

ALEXANDRA
(coldly) “One sherry and one brandy. As ordered.”

Alexandra makes her way to the other end of the bar. Helen and Mrs. Pratt take their drinks.

MRS. PRATT
(quietly) “Your daughter-in-law seems to be in one of her moods. If you pardon me mentioning it, Mrs. Black.”

HELEN
“It’s always been like this. My son should have known better than to marry someone like her from that family.”

MRS. PRATT
“I take it you don’t approve of your son marrying the girl.”

HELEN
(laughs wryly) “Oh I knew she wasn’t right for him. He wouldn’t listen though. And she wanted a ring on her finger.” (Pause) “I gather that Enid and Fred are having a hard time lately. You plan to evict them.”

MRS. PRATT
(guardedly) “I know my place, Mrs. Black. I intend to move into that house since I’m their landlady and that they’re unable to pay their bills.”

HELEN
“But you can’t throw them out onto the streets…”

MRS. PRATT
(interrupts) “Thank you for your kind opinion, Mrs. Black. My mind is firm though. I will not deter from my decision.”

At that moment, Danny, Tina and Lizzy enter, sombre and worried.

DANNY
(to Mrs. Pratt; Helen) “Hello Mrs. Pratt; Helen.” (to Alexandra) “Are we allowed in, Hummingbird?”

ALEXANDRA
(annoyed) “I told you not to call me that, Dad. Never call me that.”

MRS. PRATT
“Why Mr and Mrs. Simmons; little Lizzy?!”

HELEN
“Sean told us what happened. How’s Bruce, Tina?”

TINA
“He’s doing alright. Thank you, Helen.”

DANNY
“The doctors and nurses say he’s going to make it. He needs to stay in hospital for a couple of days.”

LIZZY
“He liked my sweets.”

ALEXANDRA
(annoyed) “Well that’s marvellous, isn’t it? Now we can all be sensible.”

DANNY
“Alexandra, stop it.”

ALEXANDRA
“Well it’s true, ain’t it? I mean all you lot seem to be showing a lot of concern for him lately. Why can’t you just stop looking so solemn and depressed and think about something else?”

TINA
“It’s hard not to think about him when he’s lying in hospital.”

ALEXANDRA
“You two make a right mess of my life, you know that!”

MRS. PRATT
“Show some respect, girl. Your parents are deeply upset.”

DANNY
“It’s alright, Mrs. Pratt. We can take it.”

ALEXANDRA
“If you want my opinion, he’s better off where he is! One less part of the family to worry about! It makes my day!”

Alexandra heads off into the backroom.

TINA
(shouts) “How dare you say that?!”

DANNY
“Where do you think you’re going, girl?!”

ALEXANDRA
“To sort some stuff out in the back. Help yourself to some crisps and nuts.”

Alexandra slams the door behind her once she’s gone.

LIZZY
“Mummy?”

TINA
(depressed) “Yes, Lizzy dear.”

LIZZY
“Why has my sissy gone so angry?”

Becoming tearful, Tina cuddles Lizzy in her arms to comfort and reassure her.

SCENE #26 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy arrive in Churchwood Street. They look around to take in their surroundings. It’s quiet and pleasant at present.

NYSSA
“Nice place. I quite like it, Billy.”

BILLY
“Really? You think it’s nice?”

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “Why don’t you, Billy? It’s your home after all.”

BILLY
“Well…it’s just an ordinary street. Not that special. Houses that have been built for a long time. The cobble and stonework beaten to the ground.”

NYSSA
(assuredly) “It’s pleasant, Billy. I like the atmosphere. Soothing and calm.”

BILLY
“Yes. I suppose it is quite soothing.”

Moment of silence, as the TARDIS trio continue walking.

NYSSA
“Billy? Why did you leave home? Before you met us?”

BILLY
(gradually) “You want the honest answer?”

NYSSA
“I’d like nothing better if that’s alright.”

BILLY
(gradually) “I was bored.”

NYSSA
“Bored?”

BILLY
“I found my life boring. Everything in this street made me feel empty. I felt useless. Everyone seemed friendly and pleasant, but there was nobody to help or give me something to do.”

DOCTOR
“You didn’t get much support from your friends then.”

BILLY
“No. Not from the ones I managed to gain. So I thought I should leave this place for a bit. Not for long mind. A few weeks perhaps.”

DOCTOR
“I understand, Billy. In a way I felt the same when I thought about leaving my own home.”

NYSSA
“What prompted you to leave your home, Billy?”

BILLY
(gradually) “I woke up one morning and decided I wanted to go out and do something. I wanted to take a break.”

NYSSA
“To reconsider your options and how you were going to live.”

BILLY
“Something like that, yes. I wanted to breathe fresh air and see the world in a new light.” (Pause) “So I heard about the steam railways being threatened by Dr. Beeching. I wanted to take some shots to support and preserve the British steam rail lines. From thereon, I caught a bus to the countryside.”

NYSSA
“And that’s where you meet me and the Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“In Huttle village. Where we had that business with the Vegrons and Sinroth.”

BILLY
“I didn’t expect my country trip to be as exciting as that. It was just a project to take a number of shots and go home back to sell to my newspaper company. I didn’t intend to travel the universe in a blue box.”

DOCTOR
“Life is full of surprises, Billy.”

BILLY
“Yes.” (Pause) “I suppose the biggest surprise for me was…that I fell in love with the loveliest girl I met.” (to Nyssa) “You Nyssa. My lovely Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Billy. I love you too.”

Billy then kisses Nyssa.

NYSSA
“Is your newspaper company far from here?”

BILLY
“Oh it should be around the corner, I think. I wonder what I’m going to say to my boss when I get back.”

Billy then sniffs the air.

BILLY
(gradually) “I say. Do you smell that?”

DOCTOR
“Smell what?”

Billy sniffs the air again.

BILLY
(feeling hungry) “Oh do you smell chips, you two?”

NYSSA
(startled) “Chips?”

Billy walks on a bit further, going around the corner. The Doctor and Nyssa follow him, before Billy stops in his tracks.

BILLY
(excited) “Yes! There it is!”

NYSSA
“What is that place over there?”

BILLY
(feeling hungry) “The fish and chip shop. I used to come here to buy fish and chips for my mum and dad for an evening meal.” (sniffs) “Oh I’ve missed that! Oh happy memories!” (to Doctor; Nyssa) “Say! Shall I get us a bag of chips?”

DOCTOR
“Really, Billy! Do you expect me who’s travelled the whole cosmos to end up on a diet of fish and chips?!”

BILLY
(apologetically) “I was only asking…”

DOCTOR
“Really, Billy! What do you take me for?!”

A beep then echoes. The Doctor takes out his temporal oscillation displacer from his coat pocket.

DOCTOR
(surprised) “My temporal oscillation displacer! It’s picked something up!”

The Doctor walks ahead, carrying the portable device with him. Nyssa and Billy watch him go.

NYSSA
“Billy?” (gradually) “I’d like to try these…fish and chips.”

Happily, Billy takes Nyssa over to the fish and chip shop.

SCENE #27 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – DAY, MORNING
At the Dwaxi base of operations underneath Churchwood Street, Navigator Bolesh monitors Nyssa and Billy’s movements as they’re being scanned. Commander Zurlt and Instigator Kolgu are with her.

KOLGU
(furiously) “It’s them, isn’t it? IT’S GOT TO BE THEM!”

BOLESH
“Yes, Instigator. Scanners have identified them as enemies to our cause.”

ZURLT
“They are top priority, Bolesh! They ruined our plans before!”

KOLGU
“Weren’t there three of them though?” (to Bolesh) “Check blondie, girl!”

BOLESH
“Alright, alright! I’m doing it!”

Bolesh activates the monitors to turn on the Doctor.

KOLGU
“It is! It’s him. The one called…”

ZURLT
(venomously) “Doctor!” (Pause) “He shall pay for his crimes against us! Against our empire!”

KOLGU
“But surely not until we have the pleasure of making him suffer! Beating him and his friends to death; kicking his shins; battering his guts out!”

ZURLT
“Precisely what I meant you bozo, Kolgu!”

They continue watching the monitors, as the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy move on.

SCENE #28 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
Outside the B&B in Churchwood Street, the police investigate the crime scene from the previous night. Constable Wyatt leads the investigation, as he looks over Ryan Donner’s corpse.

WYATT
“Such a shocking state.”

Wyatt gets up from the floor and addresses three fellow constables.

WYATT
“Alright, you three. Get this lot back. Keep them behind that red line.”

The three policemen do as they bid as they attend to the crowd. Wyatt returns, attending to Ryan Donner’s corpse.

WYATT
“Such a loss of life.”

Just then, one person gets through the crowd. Some people protest and a policeman shouts to him. Wyatt turns around.

WYATT
(irritably) “Oi! I said no-one…”

SEAN
(cheerfully) “Hello, Constable Wyatt. I hope you don’t mind. I have a story to report.”

WYATT
“Yes I do mind, Mr. Black. I think you’ve got an infernal cheek coming here and disrupting a police investigation.”

SEAN
“The public need to know about this. They need to know what’s been happening here.”

WYATT
“Well can you at least make your story with some dignity, son? Show some respect for the dead.”

SEAN
“Just taking a few shots of the dead bloke who got killed and I’ll be on my way.”

Sean takes a shot with his camera.

SEAN
“That’s all. Though I did have in mind to speak to some of your lot as well and ask some questions.”

WYATT
“Well, you’re going to have a hard time getting your answers. We don’t even know what we’re handling ourselves.”

SEAN
“Have you been able to identify the poor bloke?”

WYATT
“Does it look like we have already? We don’t even know who he is. Let alone he’s fatally wounded and bloodily scarred. Look!”

Wyatt carefully rolls Ryan’s corpse over. Sean sees Ryan’s face and backs away slightly.

SEAN
(shocked) “Wait a minute! I know that face!”

WYATT
“You do?”

SEAN
“Yes! This is…well I’ve only seen a picture of him but…this is my sister’s boyfriend! Ryan Donner!”

WYATT
“What?!”

SEAN
“Maria said she was bringing him over to visit us! This is definitely Ryan Donner! I know it is!”

WYATT
“Where is your sister, Mr. Black?”

SEAN
“I’ve no idea. I’ll have to go.”

WYATT
(ruefully) “What about your story, Mr. Black?”

SEAN
“I’ll have to come back later.”

WYATT
“You know someone who did this…?”

SEAN
“Sorry. I have to go. I’ll catch you later, Constable.”

Sean goes off, leaving the startled and concerned crowd.

WYATT
(mutters) “Show-off that Sean Black. Thinks he’s so smart.”

Wyatt turns back to Ryan Donner’s corpse, deeply troubled.

SCENE #29  – INT – KITCHEN, NO. 37 – DAY, MORNING
At Keith’s house in No. 37, he and Rick confront each other in the kitchen.

KEITH
(shouts) “I told you before, you weedy! Get out of my house!”

RICK
“Keep your voice down, you scum!”

KEITH
(shouts) “I can shout all I want to, can’t I?! GET OUT!!”

Keith then slams his fist on the table and lets out an annoyed cry.

RICK
“Can’t take control, can you?! Know what I’m saying, mate?! You oafish git!”

KEITH
“They said that they’ll make us feel better!”

RICK
“Yeah. Until that times come, you’re going to get very much worse. I can make it easier for you if you like!”

KEITH
“Oh you’d like that, wouldn’t you? But you and me must work together!”

RICK
“I’d rather eat my dog for breakfast than work for you!”

KEITH
“You twerp!”

Rick and Keith fight each other, before they’re interrupted by Sean Black who enters and aims a sharp pitchfork at them.

SEAN
(angrily) “Stay where you are! Do not move, you two!”

Rick and Keith are startled when they see Sean.

KEITH
(startled) “Oh great gummy!”

RICK
(to Sean) “Where did you get that pitchfork, mate?!”

SEAN
(angrily) “Never mind where I got it! You two losers have to be so nit-picky and bickering to have your own way! I can’t stand listening to you two!”

KEITH
“You’ve been out there then?! Outside my kitchen door?!”

SEAN
(spitefully) “Hearing every lovely word!”

RICK
“Come to cause trouble, have you?”

Sean threatens them with the pitchfork.

SEAN
(bitterly) “Don’t talk about me causing trouble! It’s you that’s causing trouble, don’t you think?!”

Moment of silence.

SEAN
“That man you murdered happens to be my sister’s boyfriend.”

KEITH
“Got nothing to do with us!”

SEAN
“Just answer me one question, you two.” (Pause) “WHERE IS MY SISTER?!”

Another moment of silence, as Rick and Keith refuse to say anything. Sean then smashes some cutlery, cups, mugs and kitchen utensils onto the floor with his pitchwork and with savage ferocity.

SEAN
“The cutlery is just a start of what will happen.”

RICK
“You can’t do anything to us, mate!”

KEITH
“Yeah. Leave us out it.”

SEAN
“Tell me what I need to know! What I…really need to know! What I really…need to hear!”

SCENE #30 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
Back with the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy, they walk through Churchwood Street. The Doctor uses his temporal oscillation displacer to scan the area. Nyssa and Billy have a bag of fish and chips between them.

BILLY
“Enjoying those, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes. They’re rather nice.”

BILLY
“Not too salty, I hope?”

NYSSA
“No, not really. I find the fish a little crispy though.”

BILLY
“I suppose when it comes to trying new foods, you always get a bit of a surprise.”

NYSSA
“Some of the foods I have on Traken are mostly what you have on Earth, Billy. Though I must say…these chips are quite a surprise to me.”

At that moment, the Doctor joins them, bewildered by the displacer’s readings.

DOCTOR
“I can’t make head or tail of this.”

The Doctor then inadvertently picks a chip from Nyssa and Billy’s bag and pops it into his mouth, whilst looking at the displacer.

DOCTOR
(munches) “The rift emissions are off the scale. Every angle we go in; every sector of this street, there’s rift energy.”

NYSSA
“You’re saying Billy’s home is bathed in time, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(munches) “Most likely. It could be that Billy’s street is the epicentre of all temporal rift activity.”

The Doctor takes a few more chips and pops them into his mouth.

BILLY
(dismissively) “That’s a lot of tosh, Doctor. That can’t happen in my street. Churchwood’s boring enough as it is to be the root home of some time and space powerhouse.”

DOCTOR
(munches) “Sloppy thinking, Billy. Never question the impossible.”

The Doctor picks up some more chips and eats them.

BILLY
(wryly) “Shall I get you a plate, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(munches) “Hmm? No, no. This is fine. Thank you, Billy.”

NYSSA
“We could have had a portion for the three of us, Doctor. If you weren’t so pedantic…”

As the Doctor picks a few more chips from Nyssa and Billy’s bag, something then catches his attention.

DOCTOR
“Hello. What’s going on over there?”

NYSSA
“Over where?” (Pause) “Down the far end of the street you mean?”

BILLY
(realises) “That’s where Mrs. Forshaw’s B and B is. It looks redecorated.”

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Come on.”

NYSSA
(concerned) “Where are you going?”

DOCTOR
“To see what the commotion is all about?”

NYSSA
(cries) “Doctor?!”

But the Doctor heads towards the murder scene at the B&B. Nyssa and Billy watch him go. Billy then passes the bag of fish and chips to Nyssa.

BILLY
“Uh…fancy another chip, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“You finish them, Billy. I better see what the Doctor’s discovered.”

Nyssa follows the Doctor, whilst Billy remains holding the bag of chips.

BILLY
“Oh well. Waste not, want not.”

With that, Billy scoffs the rest of the chips from the bag. He then follows after Nyssa and the Doctor.

SCENE #31 – INT – BASEMENT, INTEROR OF B&B – DAY, MORNING
In the B&B’s basement, Dwaxi soldiers and technicians are dealing with some cartridges containing drugs. They place them in some cargo storage boxes. These operations are supervised by Probationer Mullog.

MULLOG
“Come on, you bozos! Get on with your work!”

The Dwaxi soldiers and technicians jeer at Mullog, as they ignore him and carry on with their work.

MULLOG
“Get on with your work! You should be thankful I’m not kicking you all in the…”

Mullog gets interrupted, as Instigator Kolgu teleports in. Mullog salutes him.

MULLOG
(cries) “Hail, Instigator!”

The other Dwaxi see Kolgu appear and salute him as well.

DWAXI
(in unison) “Hail, Instigator!”

KOLGU
(shouts) “Shut your big fat mouths, you morons!” (to Mullog) “Mullog! You’ve got people outside investigating that dumb act of yours in killing that man!”

MULLOG
“It’s nothing to worry about, scumbag! I can handle a little annoyance!”

KOLGU
“That annoyance has got people talking!”

Mullog smacks Kolgu in the face.

MULLOG
“I know my place too well, Instigator! I told you I can handle it.”

KOLGU
(angrily) “How dare you smack me in the face?!”

MULLOG
“People get murdered all the time in case you didn’t know. It’s life for these people! Whereas it’s death for us!”

KOLGU
(bitterly) “If your supervision on the storage of our drugs is as poor as your handling of outside interference, then you are considered a wimp!”

MULLOG
“Don’t ever call me by that name again!”

KOLGU
(bitterly) “Wimp!!! Wimp!!! WIMP!!!”

Mullog smacks Kolgu in his face, before Kolgu smacks him back. There’s bitter resentment between the two.

KOLGU
“It’s these people who have to have the drug, Mullog! If we had enough chambers, we could get these people conditioned and injected instantly! Meanwhile, we have to wait! Wait for boring hours!”

MULLOG
“It’s his lordship who’s the dumb one! He’s incompetent!”

Kolgu kicks him in the shin and Mullog lets out a cry of pain.

KOLGU
“I can be angry with whoever I like! I want people’s bodies to be dead on the floor as much as anyone else! I want blood to be everywhere! Including yours, you scaccvviuvuikeok!”

Moment of grim silence ensues.

MULLOG
“Buzz off, will you!!!”

KOLGU
“The girl you captured! It has caused the Directors to be very angry!”

MULLOG
“So?”

KOLGU
“See to it that this girl’s disappearance is a set up! A cover story! Something to make the stupid people of this stupid place even more STUPID!!!”

MULLOG
“By luring…a certain someone.”

KOLGU
“Exactly!” (Pause) “This one here! I show him to you!”

Kolgu activates a monitor screen and indicates a person to be captured.

MULLOG
“What? That loser?!”

KOLGU
“Yeah, Mullog. That…loser!”

SCENE #32 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, MORNING
In Churchwood Street, the Doctor arrives outside the B&B with Nyssa and Billy following him. They pass through the crowd before meeting Constable Wyatt at the scene of the crime.

DOCTOR
(out loud) “Excuse me! Coming through!”

WYATT
(protests) “Pardon me, sir. Who exactly are you?!”

DOCTOR
“I’m the Doctor. Now please get out of my way. I see this man’s been murdered.”

WYATT
“Stay back, sir. And how dare you…?”

DOCTOR
(pleased) “Oh good! You’re a policeman, aren’t you?”

WYATT
“Constable Wyatt, yes. And as I said before…”

DOCTOR
“Delighted to meet you, Constable. These are my friends Nyssa and…”

WYATT
(realises) “Doctor?! Oh they said they were sending in a doctor. Good thing too. Well…here he is, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Very messy.”

WYATT
(to Nyssa; Billy) “And these two? Are they with you, Doctor?”

NYSSA
“I’m Nyssa. And this is Billy. Though you may know him already.”

WYATT
(realises; surprised) “Wait a minute! Billy Walker! It’s you, isn’t it?!”

BILLY
(nervously) “Yes Constable, it’s me. I’m back.”

WYATT
(astonished) “Well, I must say! This is a turn up for the books! It’s incredible to see you again, Mr. Walker!”

BILLY
“Oh. Have I been away that long then?”

NYSSA
“Everyone’s all staring at you, Billy! You must have been!”

BILLY
“Oh? Are they?”

Billy looks to see the crowd.

NYSSA
“You’ve been noticed at last. All with gaping mouths.”

BILLY
(nervously) “Yes.” (to crowd) “Hello everyone!”

A few gasps escape from the crowd. Meanwhile, the Doctor turns Ryan’s corpse over to look at it.

DOCTOR
(to Wyatt) “Excuse me, Constable? Might I ask…?”

WYATT
(shocked) “What do you think you’re doing, man? Moving him about like that on the floor?! Leave the body where it is, will you?!”

DOCTOR
(interjects; intrigued) “There are lots of bullet holes through his clothes. And consequently a lot of blood flowing out. Quite a blood bath, wasn’t it?”

NYSSA
“It’s horrible. Somebody so cruel and so horrid must have been insane to have done this to him.”

BILLY
“And certainly with a knack of using a gun. Or a rifle.”

DOCTOR
“Or considerably a much more powerful and advanced sort of weapon.” (to Wyatt) “Have you identified who this man was, Constable? Is he a local?”

WYATT
“I’ve never seen him before in my life. Though Mr. Black says he’s his sister’s boyfriend.”

BILLY
(to Wyatt) “Mr. Black? Sean Black, you mean?”

WYATT
“Right! Says this man’s a Mr. Ryan Donner!”

DOCTOR
“Where’s Mr. Black now?”

NYSSA
“Do you know him, Billy?”

BILLY
“He’s my best mate! Ever since we knew each other as kids at school.”

WYATT
“I don’t know where young Mr. Black’s got to, Doctor. Said something about making a few enquiries. Thing is though, a lot of this has happened more regularly. All these murders and pub fights.”

DOCTOR
“Has it indeed?”

WYATT
“Like last night, one of my boys was brutally assaulted by a pack of thugs. He’s in hospital now. In the last few weeks, a number of pub fights have happened. One old lady got mugged and killed.”

NYSSA
“Killed?!”

WYATT
“Right on this spot. Poor old lady. Nobody had seen or heard anything like it. Most of these involve young men out on motorbikes causing trouble.”

BILLY
“I don’t understand. Churchwood’s never been like this!”

DOCTOR
“With the rift we found…it makes me curious.”

The Doctor ponders on this, whilst leaning over Ryan’s crumbled corpse. Nyssa, Billy and Constable Wyatt stand beside the Doctor.

SCENE #33 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, NOON
At noon-time, a fair distance away, John Graham walks on the street minding his own business. He passes Keith’s house and smokes a cigarette. John coughs profusely, dropping his cigarette to the ground. He then realises where his cigarette has ended up.

JOHN
(groans) “Oh that’s marvellous, isn’t it?! At a time when I have a coughing fit. My ciggy’s on the floor.”

After stamping his foot on the cigarette on the ground, John continues walking. He doesn’t realise that Rick and Keith have stepped out to watch him go past.

RICK
(calls) “‘Ere! You!”

John turns back to look at Rick and Keith.

JOHN
(startled) “Are you talking to me?!”

KEITH
“What does it look like?! We want to say something to you!”

JOHN
(challengingly) “Oh yeah? What do you want to say?!”

RICK
“Don’t get all smart with us, mate!”

KEITH
“You won’t get what you want if you talk that way to us!”

JOHN
(intrigued) “Oh. And what is it I want as you so amply imply?”

Moment of grim silence ensues.

RICK
“Why don’t you come inside and have a look?!”

JOHN
“You what?”

KEITH
“We promise you! It’s really worth seeing!”

JOHN
“Find someone else who’s in the mood! So back off!”

John continues to walk, before hearing a familiar voice from within the house.

MARIA (V’O)
(cries) “Help me! Please somebody help me!”

John turns to look back.

JOHN
“Who was that?!”

RICK
“Who was what, mate?!”

MARIA (V’O)
(cries) “Help! Help me, somebody! Please!”

JOHN
(realises) “It’s her, isn’t it?! It’s Maria Black! That’s Maria!” (accusingly) “What have you two done to her?!”

KEITH
(laughs) “Why don’t you go in and find out for yourself, Mr. Graham?”

MARIA (V’O)
(cries) “John? John, is that you?! Please John, help me!”

JOHN
“Hang on, love! I’m coming, Maria! I’m coming to get you!”

John runs for the house, as he passes Rick and Keith and enters inside. Rick and Keith watch John go in and laugh with cruel amusement. A terrifying scream echoes from John inside. Rick and Keith laugh cruelly, as they re-enter the house.

SCENE #34 – INT – STOREROOM, GLASS & HOUND – DAY, AFTERNOON
That afternoon, back in the Glass & Hound, Alexandra sorts out food and drinks stock in the storeroom. Sean enters to find her.

SEAN
“Keeping busy, my dear.”

Alexandra stops working to look up at Sean. Tense silence ensues, before Alexandra resumes her work and ignores Sean.

ALEXANDRA
(moodily) “So…had a nice day at work then?”

SEAN
(gradually) “Just came back to check how you are. It’s my duty as your husband, you know.”

ALEXANDRA
“I’m coping fine, thank you. There’s no need for you to stick around.”

Sean shuts the door behind him.

SEAN
“I met my mum earlier. She said you made a scene earlier with your parents. About Bruce.”

ALEXANDRA
“Well what if I did. You know Bruce is a pain in the backside!”

SEAN
“In your backside, Alexandra. Not anyone else’s.” (Pause) “Everyone’s noticing, you know. If you’ve got a problem, why don’t you tell me?”

ALEXANDRA
“There’s nothing to tell, is there.”

SEAN
“You’re not sharing, Alexandra.” (Pause) “It’s important for two people in a marriage to share. Not to hide things from each other.” (Pause) “You know I’m always there for you.”

ALEXANDRA
(bitterly) “Yeah. Pull the other one, Sean Black. What do you care?! Or what does anyone else care for that matter?!”

SEAN
“Is that what this is all about? People ignoring you?”

ALEXANDRA
“Well they do, don’t they?”

SEAN
“You’re not being fair, dear.”

ALEXANDRA
“When has anyone ever been fair? More to the point, when have you?!”

SEAN
“Tell me what’s on your mind and then I’ll understand. I’ll let everyone else know if you want to.”

ALEXANDRA
“Do you expect me to tell you now after all we’ve been through?!”

SEAN
“We’re married, Alexandra.”

ALEXANDRA
“Look at me, Sean! Look at how I am now! Can you see any hint of what’s happening to me?!”

Moment of silence, as Sean tries to understand.

SEAN
(realises) “Oh my…Alex!”

ALEXANDRA
“You see. You see now, Sean?”

SEAN
“I didn’t…I never thought…” (Pause) “Oh Alex! You’re pregnant!”

ALEXANDRA
(tearfully) “Yes. You’ve finally grasped it, haven’t you? I’m pregnant.”

SEAN
(gradually) “You’re…you’re going to have a baby.”

ALEXANDRA
(deep breath) “Yes.”

SEAN
(gradually) “I’m going to be a father. And you’re going to be a mother.”

ALEXANDRA
“Yeah. How sad is that?!”

Alexandra then bursts into tears. Sean embraces her and holds her in his arms. Alexandra keeps on crying, whilst she and Sean are in the back room of the Glass & Hound.

The drama intensifies, i take it Marias murdered John? Sean is Billys best friend is a great inclusion & i like the temporal rift that links to Torchwood i adds a nice touch.

Can’t fathom Alexandras aggressive reactions to her family? They seem nice enough, Billy sharing chips with Nyssa was a lovely scene & i love that we get to see the curious nature of the Fifth Doctor once again.

This is riveting drama Tim, your characters are fully rounded & well written & i like how you add more layers to them & the story.

Can’t wait to read the next chapter.

      Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed Chapter 3 of ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’.

Has Maria murdered John you ask. Hmm. You’ll have to wait and see as you read the next chapter. 😀

Glad you like the inclusion of Sean being Billy’s best friend in the story. I hope you’ll enjoy how that turn out in the story when Billy and Sean actually reunite with each other.

I’m pleased you like that the temporal link links to Torchwood. When I originally developed the Dwaxi, I had them in mind to be ‘Torchwood’ villains. As I didn’t want to disregard what I already created with the Dwaxi, I thought it’d be fun to establish that the Dwaxi’s entry into our world was via a rift in Cardiff. I’m glad you think it’s the same one as in ‘Torchwood’. After all, if BF can establish Torchwood in the audio version of ‘Damaged Goods’, why can’t I do it with the Dwaxi in my stories.

I’m glad you’re enjoying Alexandra’s character and wondering why she’s hostile to her family. I hope that the reasons for her hostility will get explained later on in the story. I’m glad you find Alexandra’s family nice enough. What did you make of Alexandra revealing to Sean that she’s pregnant.

I’m pleased you enjoyed the scene where Billy shared chips with Nyssa and found it lovely. Did you enjoy it when the Doctor pinched some chips from Billy when he was being curious. Glad you enjoyed the Fifth Doctor’s curious nature coming through in this story.

Very pleased you’re finding this riveting drama so far and that you’re enjoying the characters. I hope you’ll enjoy more as you come to the end of ‘Part One’ and continue to read the rest of the story. Glad you like how I add more layers to the characters and story.

See you in the next chapter.

      Tim. 🙂
