‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’, Part Three, Chapter 10

10. Search for the Directors

SCENE #115 – INT – TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
In the TARDIS console room, the Doctor attempts to puncture a hole through the rift by using his temporal oscillation displacer. He plugs it into the console with Nyssa and Billy beside him. At the moment, the Doctor is having no success with making a directional link.

NYSSA
(sceptically) “Doctor, this is pointless. You’re never going to fit the temporal oscillation displacer into the console circuitry.”

DOCTOR
“I have to rewire the displacer into the TARDIS scanner screen and trackers to locate the weak point of the rift, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(sceptically) “It’s far-fetched. I know it was my idea, but there must be a simpler way of solving this task…”

DOCTOR
“There isn’t. Unless you want to stand close to a rift to puncture the hole with the displacer.”

BILLY
“What, can you do that?”

NYSSA
“No, Billy. That’s far too dangerous. We’d be exposed to temporal radiation.”

BILLY
“Then how exactly are we going to use that contraption to take a peak inside an alien world on the other side of a portal?”

DOCTOR
(corrects) “It’s not really a portal, Billy. It’s more an alternate dimension.”

NYSSA
“The time curve indicators should be able to receive signals and images radiated from the rift boundaries to transmit real-time data on the scanners.”

Eventually, the Doctor manages to plug the displacer in.

DOCTOR
(triumphantly) “Aha! That’s fitted in nicely. Let’s see if it makes a connection.”

The Doctor waits for a moment, before a beeping noise echoes.

DOCTOR
(cheers) “Yes!”

NYSSA
“We have a connection.”

BILLY
“Like a telephone network.”

DOCTOR
“Like a telephone network.” (Pause) “Now, let’s look on the scanner.”

The Doctor activates the scanner screen and it rises. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of interference being displayed.

DOCTOR
(put off) “Oh dear. That’s not good.”

NYSSA
“Perhaps the frequency range needs increasing to get a clear picture. I think I can adjust the frequency range here.”

DOCTOR
“I’ll help you.”

NYSSA
“I can handle it.”

Nyssa and the Doctor get under the console whilst Billy watches the scanner.

BILLY
“It’s like the fuzziness of a television screen. Like one gets when the aerial’s not properly adjusted.”

DOCTOR
“Anything happening up there, Billy?”

BILLY
“No not yet.”

NYSSA
“Let us know if you see anything, Billy. Then we’ll know we’ve got an image.”

BILLY
“Right-ho.”

Billy watches whilst the Doctor and Nyssa work underneath the console. A few minutes later…

BILLY
(realises) “Yes! There’s definitely something there now!”

DOCTOR
“Good. Thanks, Billy. Let’s have a look.”

The Doctor and Nyssa get up from the console and join Billy to see the scanner screen.

BILLY
“I can see people. Like walking trees.”

DOCTOR
“Hang on. I’ll adjust the frequency range a little more.”

The Doctor turns a switch on the console to get a better picture. However…

DOCTOR
“Still interference.”

BILLY
(knowingly) “Oh come on, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “‘Oh come on, Doctor!’ what, Billy?”

BILLY
(knowingly) “You know what happens when you realise nothing’s working properly.”

NYSSA
(knowingly) “What you always do to connect you to the console, Doctor.”

A moment of silence ensues, as the Doctor can’t ascertain what Nyssa and Billy are referring to. He soon realises before he bangs his fist on the console. With that, the screen works.

DOCTOR
“There we are! We have picture and surround sound!”

NYSSA
“Well done, Doctor.”

BILLY
“Yes, well done.”

DOCTOR
“I wondered why you two never mentioned it to me in the first place!”

Slightly put off by the Doctor’s remark, Nyssa and Billy look to the scanner screen. The TARDIS trio become horrified as they see the display of violence, hostility and horrendous crimes by the Dwaxi troopers.

DOCTOR
“There it is. The Dwaxi home world. On the other side of the rift.”

NYSSA
(horrified) “It’s horrible. So vile. They constantly fight each other and beat one another up. I hate to imagine hearing the things they say.”

BILLY
(disgusted) “They always enjoy it. They enjoy the violence and causing harm to others. It’s like part of their religion.”

DOCTOR
(grimly) “I’m afraid it’s about to get worse. Now that they’re here.”

The Doctor switches off the scanner, whilst Nyssa and Billy are distraught.

SCENE #116 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back in the ops room of the underground Dwaxi base, Commander Zurlt enters. Navigator Bolesh seizes the opportunity to address him.

BOLESH
(calls) “Sir? May I have you attention?”

ZURLT
“What do you want, blonde freak?!”

BOLESH
“I have a report regarding the Doctor.”

ZURLT
“What about him?!”

BOLESH
“We’ve tracked him back to his time ship. He’s inside.”

ZURLT
“Is he now?”

BOLESH
“Yes. Him and his two companions.”

ZURLT
(impatiently) “Let me see! Come on then!!!”

Bolesh sits at her computer with Zurlt behind her. She activates the monitor screen to show the recorded footage.

BOLESH
“This was recorded by one of our agents. He got onto recording the time ship with cameras after he first intercepted it upon its arrival. Satisfied, sir?”

ZURLT
“Don’t you expect any rewards, you selfish witch!” (Pause) “Are the teleport technicians on stand-by?”

BOLESH
“Yes, sir.”

SCENE #117 – INT – TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
Back in the TARDIS console room…

BILLY
“So how do we do it, Doctor? That is if we are.”

DOCTOR
“If we are what?”

NYSSA
“To formulate a method to divert the Dwaxi back into their own realm. Or find out how to prevent any more Dwaxi entering this world via the rift.”

DOCTOR
“No. I’m afraid that would be impossible. They’ve already interfered with human history. It’s hard to tell how many there are and what they’re intending to do next.”

BILLY
“So you’re saying we should do nothing.”

DOCTOR
“On the contrary! If the Dwaxi remain in our universe, it could cause it to explode. A destination paradox would set off a chain reaction of temporal explosions across the universe.”

NYSSA
“The Dwaxi may have been here for a long time, Doctor. They could easily destroy the universe if their presence permits it instantly.”

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “Yes I take your point, Nyssa. The fabric of universe should already be collapsing if the Dwaxi are here. Why are we still alive and not dead yet?”

BILLY
“Maybe they’ve got smart guys who already manage to get around that problem. To let the rift be open and not destroy the universe. They are clever with their technology despite being bullies.”

NYSSA
“Billy’s right. They’re an advanced form of life with technology amalgamated from various alien cultures.” (Pause; realises) “The Directors!”

DOCTOR
“Sorry, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“The Directors could be responsible for what’s happened. They may have stabilised the rift to be opened to prevent the universe from being destroyed.”

DOCTOR
“They would have to be very clever in temporal mechanics to achieve that scale we’re talking about, Nyssa.”

BILLY
“Depends who they are? Who are these Directors and where are they now?”

NYSSA
“We should try to find them. Contact and persuade them that we mean no harm. That Earth doesn’t mean a threat to them.”

BILLY
(laughs; wryly) “They may not believe us.”

NYSSA
“There is that.”

DOCTOR
“Yes well, speculation can wait. We must attend to matters in the real world. If we want to search for the Directors; we’ll have to do it in our own delicate way.”

The Doctor pulls the lever for the TARDIS interior doors to open.

NYSSA
“Where are we going?”

DOCTOR
“Back to Churchwood Street. To find out more answers.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, those rough boys we met could be waiting for us.”

DOCTOR
“Then we’ll have to be careful. I want to meet the Directors as free people and not as prisoners.”

The Doctor heads out of the TARDIS, whilst Nyssa and Billy follow after him. Billy then turns back to the TARDIS console and places Cuddles on top of it.

BILLY
(as himself) “Stay here, boy! Guard!” (as Cuddles) “Wuff. Wuff.”

Billy re-joins Nyssa, who is amused, as they take each other’s hands and head out of the TARDIS, leaving Cuddles alone on the console.

SCENE #118 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back in the Dwaxi base, Bolesh addresses Zurlt.

BOLESH
“Commander sir? The Doctor and his friends are leaving the TARDIS. Scanners have picked them up!”

ZURLT
(yells; angrily) “Well get on with it then, woman!!! I want that box here!!! I don’t care if one of them is in there!!! Bring it here!!!”

BOLESH
“Yes, sir.”

Bolesh turns to a communication panel to inform the teleport technicians.

SCENE #119 – EXT – WITCHON WOODS, CHURCHWOOD STREET – DAY, AFTERNOON
In Witchon Woods, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy step out of the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
“At least we haven’t got far to walk.”

NYSSA
“That’s reassuring. I’m glad we were able to get a lift with that nice man in his car on the way back.”

BILLY
(laughs) “Tell me about it. My feet were killing me…”

Just then, the Doctor realises something’s wrong. The TARDIS gets caught in a directional beam.

DOCTOR
(shouts; urgently) “Nyssa; Billy! Get away from the TARDIS now!”

Startled and bewildered, Nyssa and Billy do as the Doctor says as they get away from the TARDIS. They then see the TARDIS being teleported away. The place where the TARDIS was is empty as the TARDIS trio become shocked to see it gone.

BILLY
“What?! The TARDIS gone!”

NYSSA
“Oh no! Somebody must have been watching and teleported the TARDIS out once we left it.”

DOCTOR
(realises) “The Dwaxi! They planned to steal my TARDIS knowing that I would use it against them!”

NYSSA
“They’re one step ahead of us! That’s not good for us, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(troubled) “It certainly isn’t.”

BILLY
(anxiously) “And I left Cuddles in there! On the TARDIS console!” (Pause) “What happens if the Dwaxi get inside?”

NYSSA
“Let’s hope they won’t get into the TARDIS.”

DOCTOR
“I’m not sure if I managed to lock it once we were out.”

BILLY
(anxiously) “Oh no.”

DOCTOR
“Hopefully the TARDIS should lock the enemy out and know it’s me when I go in. That is if I ever see the old girl again.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, the Directors could be mastering their plans here in Billy’s home street. It’s up to us to prevent them from advancing any further.”

BILLY
“I agree with Nyssa. We can’t let them get under our skin. Not any more.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Yes. Yes, you’re both quite right.” (Pause) “Come on. Let’s make for Churchwood Street. We’ll deal with getting the TARDIS back later.” (insistently) “Come on! This way!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy make their way to Churchwood Street, as they head down the hill.

SCENE #120 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the underground Dwaxi base, Zurlt laughs away with menacing joy and malicious delight. He smacks his fists together and stomps his feet.

ZURLT
“We’ve got it! We’ve got it!!! The Doctor’s powerless now!” (mockingly) “Think you can outsmart us, Doctor?! Well, think again!!!”

Zurlt laughs out loud horrendously and mockingly, as he leaves the room. The other Dwaxi technicians and navigators, including Bolesh, continue their work.

SCENE #121 – INT – MEDICAL WARD, CHURCHWOOD HOSPITAL – DAY, AFTERNOON
At Churchwood Hospital, Tina and Danny are with Lizzy in a medical ward. Lizzy is fast asleep in bed whilst Tina and Danny sit in chairs and watch her, fraught with worry.

LIZZY
(weakly) “Mummy? Daddy?”

TINA
(worried) “How could this happen? Who could be so cruel to our little girl?”

DANNY
“I don’t know, my dear. But I intend to find out.”

LIZZY
(weakly) “Mummy? Daddy?”

Tina and Danny hear Lizzy calling them and lean forward towards her.

TINA
“Yes! Yes, Lizzy darling! I’m here! Mummy’s here!”

DANNY
(cheerfully) “Hey, ‘Little Miss Troublesome’! Daddy’s here, yes. Say, why aren’t you at school then?”

TINA
(scolds) “Danny!”

DANNY
“What?! I was only teasing.”

Lizzy then drops back to sleep, still weak. Tina and Danny become troubled.

TINA
(trembles) “It’s worse than I imagined, Danny. They say her condition’s critical. What in the world does that mean?”

DANNY
“They’re doing all they can, Tina. We can’t hassle them any more.”

TINA
(sighs) “No, I suppose not.” (Pause) “Well…at least the hospital staff, the doctors and the nurses are helpful and cooperative. Not like Alexandra. She wouldn’t even come to the hospital when she and Sean found her.”

DANNY
“She’s busy at the Glass and Hound, remember?”

TINA
“Same old story. Selfish girl.”

Lizzy then breathes weakly.

DANNY
(concerned; to Tina) “Do you want me to take you home? We don’t have to stay.”

TINA
“I want to see that my daughter’s well looked after. That she’s safe.”

DANNY
(agitated) “She would have been safe if Sean had looked after her properly. Oh how that young man ever attracted my eldest daughter I’ll never know. He was always a one at school. Playing pranks on teachers and setting his mock exams on fire.”

Danny then gets interrupted, as the door opens and a vengeful Maria enters.

TINA
“What in the name of heaven…?” (shocked) “Why?! Maria Black!”

MARIA
(savagely; to Danny) “Mr. Simmons! Remember me? I used to be one of your students!”

DANNY
(grimly) “How could I forget? You were one of the naughtiest girls in my class as I recall.”

MARIA
(savagely; to Danny) “You used to give me six beats of your cane when I was misbehaving or chatting in class! You always held a bitter disregard and contempt for me!”

TINA
“How did you get out, Maria? I thought you were in intensive care!”

MARIA
(savagely; to Tina) “I had help! From my boys!”

TINA
“You what?!”

MARIA
“Boys?! Get in here!”

The door then bursts open and a number of Dwaxi troopers enter. They carry weapons and terrify Tina and Danny out of their wits.

TINA
(shocked) “What in heaven’s name…?”

DANNY
(astonished) “Who are these men, Miss Black? Friends of yours?”

MARIA
(savagely; to Danny) “You Mr. Simmons are going to get the punishment you’ve always deserved! You…and your withered wife!”

TINA
(panics) “Danny, what’s she on about?”

DANNY
“Maria…?”

MARIA
(shrieks; to Dwaxi troopers) “Boys! Grab them!”

Immediately, the Dwaxi troopers grab hold of Tina and Danny brutally and roughly. Tina and Danny struggle to break free.

TINA
(cries; in pain) “Oww! ‘Ere, who are you lot? You’re hurting my shoulders!”

DANNY
(shouts) “Oi! Let go of me, you ruffians|! Let us go!”

MARIA
(mock-hushes) “Ssh! Don’t want to disturb Little Miss Lizzy now, do we?”

The Dwaxi troopers laugh and jeer mockingly as Maria approaches Danny.

MARIA
(gloats) “Now we’re going to take you back to our secret hideout. So that you get what you deserve. How does that sound…Mr. Teacher?!!”

Maria and the Dwaxi troopers take Tina and Danny away with them, as they struggle to break free.

TINA
(protests) “No! What about Lizzy?!” (cries) “Lizzy?!”

But it’s no use, as Tina and Danny are dragged away by Maria and the Dwaxi troopers whilst Lizzy sleeps in her hospital bed.

SCENE #122 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back on Churchwood Street, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy return as they walk on the pavement.

DOCTOR
“Be on the lookout, you two. We may encounter Dwaxi troopers wherever we go or turn.”

BILLY
“Doctor? These Dwaxi Directors. Would you suppose they were likely to be heavily powerful Dwaxi commanders except looking grander and sleeker?”

DOCTOR
“They could be. People with grand titles tend to appear that way compared with their minions.”

NYSSA
“We shouldn’t underestimate them. The Directors could be anyone. I doubt the Dwaxi would tell us.”

BILLY
“Maybe they haven’t seen them. Perhaps the Directors don’t exist.”

DOCTOR
“Nyssa’s right though. We should expect the unexpected.”

BILLY
“What? You mean…some residents of Churchwood, like this lot I’ve grown up with, could be the Directors? That’s preposterous! I would have noticed!”

NYSSA
“Would you, Billy? The Dwaxi could have been here for a very long time. Long before you were born.”

BILLY
“Gosh! You really think so?”

DOCTOR
“It’s a terrifying thought. But yes, it’s possible.”

BILLY
“Oh crumbs.”

NYSSA
“We don’t have enough evidence yet, Billy. So don’t worry about it too much.”

DOCTOR
(wearingly) “But it’s best to be careful, Billy. They’re not mindless thugs, you know. The Dwaxi are brilliant tacticians.”

NYSSA
(worried) “Doctor…?”

DOCTOR
(continues) “And if the Directors are anything to go by, they’re brilliant strategists.”

NYSSA
(starts to panic) “Doctor…?”

DOCTOR
(continues; to Nyssa) “And like you said Nyssa, they could be more controlled…”

NYSSA
(panics) “Doctor?!”

BILLY
(concerned) “What is it, Nyssa? What’s wrong?”

NYSSA
“Those rough boys are back! They’re stalking up behind us!”

The TARDIS trio look behind them to see, as mods, rockers and teddy boys follow them.

DOCTOR
“Just keep walking. Pretend we haven’t noticed.”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy keep on walking. However the footsteps of the mods, rockers and teddy boys grow louder from behind them.

NYSSA
(panics) “Doctor, they’re gaining on us!”

BILLY
(panics) “They’re catching up!”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Don’t panic, you two! Now when I say run, run!”

The TARDIS trio walk on a bit further, as the mods, rockers and teddy boys catch up and become rowdy than ever.

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Now! Run!!!”

The TARDIS trio run for it as the thugs chase after them, shouting and jeering.

SCENE #123 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, AFTERNOON
The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy continue to run as they enter another part of the street around the corner.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “They’re too fast for us, Doctor! We’ll never outrun them! And you know that running’s not my thing!”

DOCTOR
“We must keep going! Onto this road here!”

They run into the middle of the road and stop momentarily before the thugs are chasing behind them.

NYSSA
“Where can we go from here?”

BILLY
“We can make for my parents’ house. Or the Glass and Hound!”

DOCTOR
“I doubt these thugs will stop pursuing us! They’re probably conditioned and drugged like Rick and Keith!”

NYSSA
“They’ll show no mercy!”

BILLY
“But we must do something!”

NYSSA
(cries, terrified) “Billy, look out!”

Billy gets pushed by Nyssa to the other side of the road as she saves him from being run over by a speeding car. The Doctor falls back too once the car’s driven past them.

DOCTOR
(shouts; to car) “Hey! Watch out! You nearly ran over my friends!” (calls; to Nyssa; Billy) “Nyssa; Billy? Are you alright?”

NYSSA
(reassuringly; to Doctor) “I’m alright, Doctor!” (to Billy) “Billy? Are you alright, dear?”

BILLY
(shaken) “Nyssa?! Yes, I’m okay! Are you?”

NYSSA
(relieved) “Oh I’m so glad you’re alive! That car was going to run over you!”

BILLY
“You saved my life! Thanks!”

DOCTOR
“Meanwhile, whoever’s in the car, he’s managed to scare the youths away!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy look to see, as the car that zoomed past them drives towards the thugs. The mods, rockers and teddy boys immediately flee for their lives, panicking and crying out loud angrily. Nyssa and Billy get onto their feet, as they recover and rejoin the Doctor.

BILLY
“Where are they skiving off to?”

NYSSA
“Or more importantly, why? I thought it wouldn’t matter to the Dwaxi with a car in their way.”

The TARDIS trio then see that the car has come to a halt.

BILLY
“The car’s stopped!”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Let’s see who’s driving it, shall we?”

With that, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy run over to the car as it’s stopped in the middle of the road. Once they’ve reached the car, they open the door to find Sean Black inside, who’s dazed and breathless.

DOCTOR
(surprised) “Here’s our driver! And in a pretty bad way!”

BILLY
(realises) “It’s Sean! Sean Black! This is his car!”

NYSSA
(shocked) “What?! But he tried to kill you!”

BILLY
“No! No, he couldn’t have!”

The Doctor leans towards Sean and looks him over.

DOCTOR
(condescendingly) “Hello there! I’m the Doctor! Remember?”

SEAN
(dazed) “Doctor? I…”

DOCTOR
“Are you alright, Sean?”

SEAN
(dazed) “Me? I…I don’t know…I…I…”

Suddenly, Sean fall outs of the car and convulses his body, shuddering and shaking violently.

BILLY
“Sean?!” (cries; anxiously) “Sean, mate?! What’s wrong?!”

DOCTOR
“He’s shaking violently!”

NYSSA
“I think we can all see that, Doctor!”

BILLY
(cries; anxiously) “Sean?! Sean, what’s the matter? Sean?! Sean?!!!”

Billy receives no response, as Sean continues to convulse violently. The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy eventually help Sean.

SCENE #124 – INT – STOREROOM, GLASS & HOUND – DAY, AFTERNOON
At the Glass & Hound pub, Alexandra sorts out the stock in the storeroom. Frustrated and stressed out, she stops for a moment to take a breather.

ALEXANDRA
(sighs) “I do hope Lizzy is alright. It’s horrible to think of her in hospital.”

BRUCE
“You haven’t seen her yet then, big sis?”

Alexandra turns to see Bruce enter. A moment of tense silence ensues.

ALEXANDRA
“You!”

BRUCE
“Aren’t you going to say hello to your little brother?” (laughs) “Of course in your case, I’m not the six year old boy you towered over. When you looked after me.”

ALEXANDRA
“I was tolerant with you in those days.”

BRUCE
(cheerfully) “Look at me now, sis. See the sunshine’s radiance in my eyes?”

ALEXANDRA
“I see you’re feeling better.”

BRUCE
“I am thank you, Alexandra. I’m on the verge of full recovery.”

ALEXANDRA
(gloomily) “I’m glad to hear it.”

BRUCE
“As long as I don’t get into too many pub fights.” (Pause) “I’ve missed you at the hospital.”

ALEXANDRA
(retorts) “I was busy.”

BRUCE
“That’s the excuse you always give when family’s involved. You always wish to distance yourself from us. From me. Mum and Dad. Little Lizzy.”

ALEXANDRA
(agitated) “What good has my family ever done for me? It’s been a nuisance. Just like you, Bruce.”

BRUCE
“Oh come off it! I hoped you’d be more tolerant and sympathetic. Is that the way you’re going to be when you have your own family?”

ALEXANDRA
“Mind your own business. You don’t know the first thing about family.”

BRUCE
“Neither do you. Your wedding was an utter shambles.”

ALEXANDRA
“For that I have you to blame.”

Moment of silence.

BRUCE
“I’ve heard Billy Walker’s back in town.” (Pause) “You know if you had waited a little longer…”

ALEXANDRA
“Billy’s no longer part of my life now. I’ve made my choice. And so has he.”

BRUCE
“Why didn’t you come to visit me at the hospital?”

ALEXANDRA
“You know full well why!”

BRUCE
“I didn’t mean to upset you regarding your marriage to Sean. You know I only meant to…”

ALEXANDRA
“You hassled me about my marriage to Sean ever since we got engaged. And if that wasn’t enough, you nearly ruined my wedding dress when you came back from a rainy football match in your muddy boots.”

BRUCE
“You shouldn’t have left it lying on the floor when I trod upon it.”

ALEXANDRA
“I had it hanging on a hanger in my bedroom.”

BRUCE
“You’ve always got to have your own way, haven’t you?! Never stop to think.”

ALEXANDRA
“I shall never forgive you what you did to me! Never!!!”

At that moment, Constable Wyatt enters. Alexandra sighs, annoyed.

WYATT
“Good afternoon. I hope I’m not interrupting.”

BRUCE
“No, not at all, Constable. My sister and I were just chatting.”

WYATT
“Good to see you on the mend, Simmons my man.”

ALEXANDRA
“What is it you want, Constable?”

WYATT
“Well you see, Mrs. Black…I came to see you and your brother actually.” (Pause) “It’s my duty to inform you that your parents are missing.”

ALEXANDRA
(shocked) “What?! Missing?”

BRUCE
(disturbed) “Since when, Constable?”

WYATT
“I don’t know. They were last seen at the hospital with your daughter. Now they’re gone. And they haven’t been seen since.”

Alexandra and Bruce become troubled.

SCENE #125 – INT – MEDICAL CLINIC, CHURCHWOOD HOSPITAL – DAY, AFTERNOON
At a medical clinic in Churchwood Hospital, the Doctor checks on Sean as he, Nyssa and Billy managed to get him there. The Doctor uses a few medical tools to check Sean as he recovers.

NYSSA
(concerned; to Billy) “How are you now, Billy? Are you over the shock?”

BILLY
“I’m fine, Nyssa. I’m worried about Sean. I wonder what’s happened to him.”

NYSSA
“I should be angry with him really. He almost killed you. Killed all three of us!”

BILLY
“Perhaps Sean didn’t know any better, Nyssa.”

Meanwhile, Sean becomes fully awake as he sees the Doctor using a medical torch on his eyes. He tries to push him away.

SEAN
(startled) “Ooh whoa, whoa, hey, Doctor! Watch where you’re pointing that light in me eyes! So bright!”

DOCTOR
“Pardon me, Sean. Just a little retina scan. Nothing to worry about.”

A moment of silence ensues, as the Doctor continues to check on Sean.

SEAN
(confused) “W-W-What happened?” (Pause) “I…I remember now. I was driving in my car. On the main road back to the Glass and Hound. Then…then I saw these thugs…”

BILLY
“They were chasing after us, Sean. Me, Nyssa and the Doctor.”

SEAN
(surprised) “Really?! How shocking!”

NYSSA
“You almost ran over Billy in your car. Do you remember that?”

SEAN
(Pause; breathes deep) “I must have felt myself shaking all over. I couldn’t concentrate. I was out of control.”

DOCTOR
“Probably epilepsy.”

NYSSA
“Epilepsy?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. A neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated [with…]”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “I know what epilepsy is, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(to Sean) “Have you had fits before, Sean?”

SEAN
“Not that I know of. Just came on suddenly I suppose.”

NYSSA
“Well that’s well as maybe, but I still think…”

BILLY
“Nyssa, please. Sean said he was sorry. I’m willing to forgive him.”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
(gradually) “Yes, of course.” (to Sean) “I’m sorry, Sean. I didn’t mean to accuse you so harshly…”

SEAN
“Na, it’s alright. I get a lot from the wife. She’d probably feel the same as you, I expect.”

DOCTOR
(to Sean) “You could have collapsed over the steering wheel, Sean. Perhaps that’s when you had your fit.”

SEAN
“Maybe. I don’t remember really.”

BILLY
“Well, it doesn’t matter. As long as we’ve forgiven each other.”

SEAN
(cheerily) “Tell you what! Why don’t you lot come over to our wedding anniversary? Me and Alexandra. At the Glass and Hound. Should be a laugh.”

NYSSA
“That’s very kind of you, Sean. But I’m not sure…”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Oh, of course. We’d be delighted to.”

NYSSA
(abjectly) “But, Doctor…”

BILLY
“Oh come on, Nyssa! We might as well. He’s making us go after all.” (teasingly; to Sean) “Aren’t you, Sean?”

SEAN
(cheerfully) “You know me too well, Billy boy.”

NYSSA
(reluctantly) “Alright then.” (to Sean) “Of course we’ll come, Sean.”

SEAN
“Super!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “I say! Isn’t that your wife there?”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Sean look to see Alexandra enter with Constable Wyatt and Bruce behind her.

SEAN
(surprised) “You’re right, Doctor! What do you know?! It is my wife Alexandra.”

NYSSA
“And there’s Constable Wyatt with her.”

BILLY
“And her brother Bruce.”

DOCTOR
(apprehensively) “Excuse me, you three? I have to go and see if everything’s alright.”

SEAN
(abjectly) “‘Ere! I’ll come with you, Doctor.”

But as Sean makes to move, he groans in pain as he eventually sits back down again.

DOCTOR
“Err…I think you’d better wait to get your strength back, Sean. You’re still weak and need time to recover.”

SEAN
(groans; in pain) “You get no argument from me, Doc.”

NYSSA
“Shall Billy and I come with you, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“No, no. You go with Billy back to his house. I’ll come and see you there.”

With that, the Doctor heads out of the clinic. Nyssa and Billy attend to Sean.

SEAN
“I suppose Alexandra’s gone to check up on Lizzy.” (to Billy) “There was a time when you’d go after her, Billy.”

NYSSA
(puzzled) “Billy, what does he mean? What’s he talking about?”

SEAN
“What…you mean he never told you?”

BILLY
(slightly embarrassed) “It’s not important.”

SEAN
“It seemed important at that time, Billy. Alex meant the world to you.”

NYSSA
(insistently) “What’s your friend talking about, Billy?”

BILLY
(gradually) “Nyssa. Before I met you, I used to like Alexandra.”

SEAN
“Excuse me, mate. It was more than ‘like Alexandra’. You had a crush on her.”

NYSSA
(astonished) “A crush?!”

BILLY
“I was young then. It was just a little crush.”

SEAN
“Ah but you never stopped chasing after her. Asking her to go out with you; chatting her up; saying how pretty she was…”

BILLY
(raises voice; to Sean) “Sean! That was in the past!” (calms down) “Yes I did like Alexandra. Yes I had a crush on her. But that was long ago. Those feelings I had for her are a faint memory.” (Pause) “Besides, she’s your wife now. So don’t you worry about me getting in your way!” (Pause) “I have my own girlfriend Nyssa and I love her! And there’s nothing that can change that!”

SEAN
(gradually) “If you say so, mate.”

BILLY
“I just have, Sean.”

NYSSA
“And I believe you.”

SEAN
(startled; to Nyssa) “What – you do?”

BILLY
“Really, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes, Billy. I do. If you say you don’t have those feelings for Alexandra…”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “I don’t, Nyssa. Honestly, I don’t.”

NYSSA
“Let me finish!” (continues) “If you say you mean it, then I believe you. And I love you for it.”

Moment of tender silence ensues.

SEAN
“Wow! You certainly have one class of a girl, Billy.”

BILLY
“Thanks, Sean.”

SEAN
(gradually) “Tell you what though. Why don’t you two go back to Billy’s parents’ house? I’ll find Alexandra and find my own way back.”

BILLY
“Are you sure about that, Sean?”

SEAN
(reassuringly) “I can manage alright. Now you two go on.”

BILLY
“We don’t like to leave you…”

SEAN
(reassuringly) “Stop and give over worrying, Billy. I tell you I’ll be fine, alright?”

NYSSA
“Billy, I think we’d better do as Sean says.”

BILLY
(gradually) “Alright then. We’ll go, Sean.”

SEAN
“I’ll catch you up sometime later on.”

BILLY
(gradually) “See you, Sean.”

SEAN
(to Billy) “See you later, Billy.” (to Nyssa) “Bye, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Bye, Sean.”

Eventually, Nyssa and Billy leave Sean as they head out of the hospital. Once they’ve gone, Sean laughs to himself mischievously, sounding like a childish brat.

SCENE #126 – INT – TRAINING ROOMS, DWAXI BASE – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the training rooms of the underground Dwaxi base, Dwaxi troopers scream, shout and swear as they bash and fight each other in hand-to-hand combat. A crowd gathers to see the Dwaxi troopers fighting. They jeer, cheer and shout at one another. Roaring shouts echo from the crowd and drown out the sounds, making it feel like a football match. Rick and Keith are in the training rooms with Instigator Kolgu. They watch as Rick and Keith get into the spirit of things.

RICK
(shouts) “Come on, you stupid lobs! Get on with it!!! Bash the other guy out with bloody fists if you have to!!!”

KEITH
(impressed) “So all of this is a fight club then? A really massive fight club!”

KOLGU
(scornfully) “What do you expect?! The Dwaxi never tire! We hunger for fighting each other! We raise the stakes up for every contestant with increasing levels of difficulty! No limits! No end!”

KEITH
(pleased) “Sounds like my kind of fighting!”

KOLGU
“You two will be fitted up with the Dwaxi armour! You will learn how to fight in it! The body armour contains flawed energy power packs! So if you strike or punch each other too hard, you’ll be become blobs of blood within minutes!”

RICK
(bitterly) “What about weapons? Do we get to learn how to use those as well?”

KOLGU
(savagely) “Hold your tongue, gork! ‘Course you’ll get your guns! You’ll soon be shooting bullets at everyone!”

Just then, two Dwaxi troopers smash into some walls. They soon get back onto their feet, raging in anger and terror.

KEITH
(coyly) “Ooh! Nasty!”

KOLGU
(savagely) “That’s the whole point, stupid! We hunger for nasty! We scream for nasty!!!”

RICK
(excited) “Look! That one trooper’s knife-stabbing everyone in sight!” (yells) “Let blood spill out!!!”

One Dwaxi trooper stabs his opponents with a dagger without mercy.

KOLGU
(shouts) “Go on, trooper! Kick the living daylights out of them!”

The Dwaxi trooper soon comes upon at Kolgu, Rick and Keith, screaming with uncontrollable rage and anger. He raises his dagger to them, but Kolgu holds the Dwaxi trooper back.

KOLGU
“Hold back, you dumbbell!”

Kolgu then smacks the Dwaxi trooper. The Dwaxi trooper reacts, growling contemptuously.

KOLGU
(bitterly; indicates Rick and Keith) “These two need training! Get back to your own or I’ll smash you!”

The Dwaxi trooper growls again before he goes off in a huff.

KOLGU
(to Rick; Keith) “Well? What do you two think?! Lame for you, is it?!”

KEITH
“Impressive! Utterly impressive!”

RICK
(cries) “It’s flipping marvellous! We want our training room!”

KOLGU
(to Rick; Keith) “Of course! If you two do a little job for us!”

KEITH
(groans) “Oh? And what job is that?”

Well i utterly detest Sean now, he’s not only tried killing Nyssa & Billy, he trying cause a rift between them mentioning Alexandra & Billys crush on her, why does Sean hate Billy so much are you sure they were best friends? lol.

Nice twist about Billy liking Alexandra is there a link to her cold demeanour & her relationship with Billy what happened between them? Hmmmmm intriguing.

The Dwaxi are brutes & definitely a strong written villian, how will the Doctor defeat them?

Great chapter Tim, the drama & suspense keeps me on tenderhooks,

      Hi Simon.

Very pleased you enjoyed Chapter 10 of ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’.

I’m pleased you’re enjoying hating Sean in the story, especially when he almost tries to kill Nyssa and Billy and creates a rift between them by saying Billy had a crush on Akexandra once. As to why Sean hates Billy, well hopefully it’ll be clearer later on in the story.

Glad you like the twist about Billy having a crush on Alexandra before he met Nyssa. I’m sure more will be revealed about Billy and Alexandra’s history later on in the story. 😀

Very pleased you find the Dwaxi well-written villains. I always find them a challenge to write as they can easily be two-dimensional.

I’m glad I’m keeping the drama and the suspense going for you in the story so far, Simon.

      See you in the chapter!

      Tim. 🙂

If this wasn’t set 2 yrs after Billy left I’d ponder if he was the father to Alexandra child but that contradicts my theory about Alexandra aggression because she having Seans baby & he has the drug in him…..damm this getting very timey wimey lol, loving this its helping distract me through a upsetting time.

Are you sure Sean has the drug in him? 😀
