‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’, Part Two, Chapter 6

6. John’s Fall

SCENE #54 – INT – MAIN HALL, GLASS & HOUND – DAY, EVENING
At the Glass & Hound pub, Alexandra is bickering with her mum Tina. Sean and his mother Helen are also with them.

ALEXANDRA
(agitated) “Oh yes, Mum. Why don’t you? Take the other stock and let everybody else starve!”

SEAN
“Alex! Your mum’s not going to take the whole stock from the pub, is she?”

ALEXANDRA
“It’s hard work preparing a meal. Especially when you haven’t the staff.”

TINA
“Haven’t the staff. Don’t give me that.”

HELEN
(raises voice) “Alright, alright! Let’s just calm down for a moment…”

ALEXANDRA
(shouts) “Calm down?! Why should I calm down?!”

At that moment, Billy enters. Everyone becomes silent once they see him.

BILLY
(nervously) “Uh…hello.” (Pause) “I hope I haven’t interrupted anything.”

Moment of silence. Helen then comes over to him.

HELEN
(gradually) “No of course not, Billy dear. It’s good to see you.”

BILLY
“It’s good to see you too, Helen.”

Helen gives Billy a hug.

SEAN
(cheers) “Hey, Billy! Is it you I see?”

BILLY
(pleased) “Sean!”

SEAN
“Hey, Billy. Where have you been hiding then?!”

Billy and Sean meet up and shake hands in a very chummy manner.

BILLY
(thrilled) “Oh it’s really good to see you, Sean.”

SEAN
(cheerfully) “Good to see you too, mate. Too long it has been.”

BILLY
“Yes. I’ve been travelling. I…well it’s hard to explain actually…”

SEAN
“Ah well, it doesn’t matter. As long as you’re here.” (to Alexandra) “Hey, Alex. You remember our friend Billy, don’t you?”

ALEXANDRA
“Yes.” (politely) “Hello, Billy. It’s good to see you.”

BILLY
“Hello, Alexandra. It’s good to see you too.”

TINA
“Hello, Billy. I’m glad to see you here.”

BILLY
(realises) “Oh hello, Tina. Likewise. It’s good to see you too.”

SEAN
“So then, what have you been doing with yourself, Billy boy? It’s not like you to get into trouble.”

At that moment, Nyssa enters. Everyone turns to see her and becomes amazed and astonished.

BILLY
“Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“Billy? Is it alright for me to come in?”

BILLY
“Yes of course. Don’t stand out there, sweetheart. Come in.”

Billy gently takes Nyssa by the arm, showing her to everyone.

TINA
(astonished) “Oh my word!”

HELEN
“Why, Billy?! Who is this lovely person you’ve brought in?”

SEAN
“She certainly is pretty. I’ll give you that.”

BILLY
“Yes. These are my friends, Nyssa.” (to everyone) “This is Nyssa, everyone.”

SEAN
“Nyssa? Hey that’s original.”

BILLY
“Nyssa is who I met whilst I’ve been away. She’s my girlfriend.”

ALEXANDRA
“Your girlfriend?!”

SEAN
“Wow! Good to meet you, Nyssa. Once you’ve finished with him, do you want to hang out with me?”

BILLY
(laughs nervously) “Oh, this is Sean. My best mate.”

NYSSA
(reserved) “I see. How do you do, Sean?”

SEAN
“You certainly know how to get a girl, Billy. I didn’t think you’d get a girl in a million years.”

BILLY
“And err…this is his mum Helen. This is Alexandra. And this is Alexandra’s mum Tina.”

NYSSA
“It’s really nice to meet you all.”

Everybody else responds graciously. Billy then turns to Sean.

BILLY
(to Sean) “I hear that congratulations are in order, Sean. You and Alexandra married.”

SEAN
“Oh, yes. That’s right, Billy. Thanks. Got married last year.”

BILLY
“Yes. So Alex’s dad told me.” (to Alexandra) “Congratulations to you too, Alex. I hope the two of you will be very happy together.”

ALEXANDRA
“Thank you, Billy. It’s very nice of you to say. I’m pleased for you too. Having got yourself a girlfriend. She seems nice to me.”

NYSSA
“Congratulations to you both. I hope you’ll be happy as well.”

A moment of tense silence ensues.

SEAN
(enthused) “Well, Billy. As we’ve stopped congratulating one another, why don’t you and your girlfriend join us for a chat? We were just going to order at the bar if you care to join us.”

BILLY
“Well, me and Nyssa…”

SEAN
(insistently) “Oh please, Billy. I really would like to catch up on old times with you.”

HELEN
“I agree. It’s been a long time since we last chatted, Billy. It’ll be great for us to catch up.”

BILLY
“I’m not sure.”

NYSSA
“Maybe Billy’s not quite ready to have a chat…”

SEAN
(interjects) “Oh please, Billy. I insist you stay. Both of you and Nyssa.”

Another moment of silence ensues.

BILLY
(thinks) “Oh I suppose it wouldn’t do any harm to have a chat, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Well, if you’re sure…”

BILLY
“I’m certain.”

SEAN
“Superb.” (to Alexandra) “Alex, can you fix us some drinks for these two whilst you’re at it?”

Alexandra groans before she grudgingly sorts out some drinks.

SCENE #55 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, EVENING
Back in Churchwood Street, the Doctor walks at a casual pace before he meets Constable Wyatt.

WYATT
“Doctor?! Doctor, wait up!”

DOCTOR
“Ah, Constable Wyatt! Good to see you! I’m taking a stroll.”

WYATT
“Your friends not with you?”

DOCTOR
“No. Billy and Nyssa went to the cemetery to wish Billy’s nana farewell. I’ve been prowling around, exploring the street and getting familiar with everything and everyone.”

WYATT
(intrigued) “Have you now?”

DOCTOR
“How’s your officer? The one who got beaten up recently. Simmons, wasn’t it?”

WYATT
“Bruce Simmons, yes. He’s going to be discharged from hospital soon.”

DOCTOR
“Is he?”

WYATT
“He’ll be sent home to spend time with his family. Hopefully he should be back on the beat within a week.”

The Doctor and Wyatt continue chatting as they walk.

SCENE #56 – EXT – ROOFTOP, CHURCHWOOD STREET – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, on the rooftop of a building of flats in Churchwood Street, a bleeding and exasperated John Graham struggles to keep control and breathe properly. He seems to be suffering after taking the drug. He makes his way to the roof’s edge, acting all wild and violent, beating himself up.

JOHN
(raises voice) “I want to stop! I want it to stop! Can’t it ever stop?!!!”

John then jumps about whilst he’s on the rooftop.

JOHN
(raises voice) “Sleep! I can’t sleep! I can’t sleep!!! Why can’t I sleep?!!!”

John then gets on his hands and knees, as he tries to control the pain inside him. He stands at the roof’s edge, whilst everyone’s down below.

SCENE #57 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, EVENING

WYATT
“Regarding the other matters you’re concerned with – Miss Maria’s being treated well in intensive care. And an autopsy is being made on the late Mr. Ryan Donner.”

DOCTOR
“Good old hospital, hey? Heard anything from John Graham at all?”

WYATT
“I haven’t seen Graham at all, Doctor. Not since the burning house incident.”

DOCTOR
“Really?! I still wonder why those two men tried to burn us inside that house…”

WYATT
(interrupts) “He’s an oddball, that Graham. Always crackers. I wonder what he was doing in that house in the first place…”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “Just a minute, Constable.”

WYATT
“What is it, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(disturbed) “Look up there! See that man!”

Wyatt looks in the Doctor’s direction to see.

WYATT
(aghast) “What does he think he’s doing?! He’s going to fall off if he’s not careful.”

DOCTOR
“He doesn’t seem well, Constable. Like he’s in pain. Beating himself.”

WYATT
(realises) “Hey! Doesn’t he look familiar?”

DOCTOR
(thinks; realises) “It’s John. John Graham.”

WYATT
“What?!” (shouts) “John! John, what do you think you’re doing up there?! Get down here at once!”

DOCTOR
(calls) “John?! It’s the Doctor and Constable Wyatt! Get down here!”

From a distance…

JOHN
(screams; shouts aloud) “Can’t sleep! Can’t sleep! Can’t sleep!!!”

Back with the Doctor and Wyatt on the ground…

WYATT
“What is he on about?!”

DOCTOR
“I don’t know. Something’s upset him.”

SCENE #58 – EXT – ROOFTOP, CHURCHWOOD STREET – DAY, EVENING
Back on the rooftop with John…

JOHN
(cries aloud) “Help me! Please somebody, help me! I’ve been trying to control it! But it’s getting to me! It’s getting to me!!!”

John continues to struggle, before Mullog and a Dwaxi trooper appear behind him via teleport. The Dwaxi trooper holds a powerful weapon that’s charged and ready. John turns to see them.

MULLOG
“This is the one!”

JOHN
(accusingly) “You! You’re the ones!”

MULLOG
“Trooper! Kill him!”

JOHN
(shouts) “No! You can’t!”

MULLOG
“Shoot him, I say! Shoot him! Shoot him! Blast him into hell!!!”

JOHN
(yells) “No!!!”

DWAXI TROOPER #1
(shouts) “Yes! I will shoot! I’ll bleed his heart out!”

The Dwaxi trooper fires his weapon furiously at John, shrieking with fiery rage. John shakes and shudders, crying in pain. Mullog laughs, jeering at him.

MULLOG
(jeers) “You pathetic scumbag! You’re nothing!!!”

With that, John loses his grip. He falls backwards and goes off the top of the building.

SCENE #59 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, EVENING

DOCTOR
(cries) “No! John!”

The Doctor and Wyatt watch as everyone gasps with horror. John falls to his death, as he ends up dead, splattered all over the floor. A moment’s silence ensues as everyone is in shock.

DOCTOR
“Oh no!”

WYATT
“He’s a goner! What possessed him?! From such a great height!”

DOCTOR
(concerned) “Did you see what happened? Did you spot someone?”

WYATT
“Never mind your speculations, Doctor! This is serious! I must investigate!”

Wyatt runs forward with the Doctor eventually following him.

SCENE #60 – EXT – CHURCHWOOD STREET, CARDIFF – DAY, EVENING
Everyone gathers around John’s corpse, before Wyatt turns up and pushes the crowd back.

WYATT
(calls) “Alright everyone, keep back! Give some space and let the police handle it. There’s nothing to worry about. Now come on. Back where you are.”

Whilst Wyatt handles the crowd, the Doctor arrives and begins to examine John’s body. Delicately, the Doctor turns John’s body over.

DOCTOR
(sorrowfully) “Oh poor, John. I’m so sorry. I only wish…”

The Doctor eventually puts John’s corpse back on the ground, before Wyatt comes over to join him.

WYATT
(concerned) “Doctor?! Is there a way you could save him?”

DOCTOR
(grimly) “I don’t think I could have saved him if I wanted to.”

WYATT
“But surely you can try! He may have committed suicide, but it doesn’t…”

DOCTOR
“Is that what you think he did, Constable? Committed suicide?”

WYATT
“Well, you saw what he did. An act against God’s mercy.”

DOCTOR
(stresses) “Wyatt! These aren’t the marks of a suicide! He’s been shot!”

WYATT
“Shot?!”

DOCTOR
“About a dozen times! His entire chest! Look! Blood marks spilling out!”

Wyatt looks to see and is aghast.

WYATT
“Great Scott! Just like Ryan Donner’s death.”

DOCTOR
“Exactly! Just like Ryan Donner’s death with bullet holes all over him!” (Pause) “Wait a minute! There’s something else!”

WYATT
“What is it?”

DOCTOR
“There’s a mark. On the side of his neck. A red mark.”

WYATT
“I better call for an ambulance. I’ll phone them.”

DOCTOR
“And I’ve got to go and find Nyssa and Billy. See how they are.”

Wyatt goes off to find a telephone to call an ambulance, whilst the Doctor goes off to find Nyssa and Billy. The crowd remains puzzled and shocked, muttering whilst observing John Graham’s corpse.

SCENE #61 – INT – MAIN HALL, GLASS & HOUND – DAY, EVENING
Back at the Glass & Hound, Billy and Nyssa chat with Sean, Alexandra, Helen and Tina. They have a meal whilst sitting at one of the tables.

BILLY
“So you had good weather for your wedding?”

SEAN
“Oh yeah. It was gloriously sunny. And our friends and family were there.”

NYSSA
“I’m glad you had a successful day, Sean.”

SEAN
“Thanks, love. Yeah it was a fantastic. Wasn’t it, Alex?”

ALEXANDRA
(cheerily) “Yes. Yes it was.”

BILLY
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there. For your wedding, I mean.”

SEAN
“Na! It’s alright, Billy. You wouldn’t have known anyway. We had our engagement announced as soon as you left.”

BILLY
“Oh yeah?”

SEAN
“We were hoping to tell you when you got back. But by then, you went missing and the wedding went ahead.”

HELEN
“Where exactly did you go, Billy? We were all very worried about you.”

BILLY
“I was in the country like I said. Saving steam trains.”

ALEXANDRA
“Must have been a failed campaign. The steam trains are extinct by now.”

BILLY
“What?! Oh no!”

SEAN
“You shouldn’t have bothered, Billy. Steam trains were doomed to die before you began your photo campaign.”

BILLY
“It was worth it though, Sean. I met Nyssa. And the Doctor.”

NYSSA
“And I’m very pleased you don’t regret having met me, Billy.”

BILLY
“Not one jot, dear.”

TINA
“But where did you go, Billy? You can’t have been in the countryside that long. Let alone two years.”

BILLY
“Uh…well…”

NYSSA
(helpfully) “Billy took me out on our first date. We went to the cinema. We were supposed to go to a dance, but it wasn’t on at the time.”

BILLY
(apprehensively) “Ah, but we did go to a dance later. At err…some hotel. Quite far away.”

NYSSA
“At a hotel, yes. Far, far away actually.”

SEAN
“Still holding onto that old music you and your parents love hey, Billy? Don’t see why you bother, mate. Rock music is what it’s all about now. There’s no need for all that rag and jazz you seem so fond of. Not for young people anyway. Not for me.”

NYSSA
“There’s nothing wrong with listening to ‘old music’ as you call it, Sean. If you put your heart and mind to it. I did and I enjoy it as much as Billy does. So don’t make judgements too soon on things you don’t listen to.”

SEAN
“Ooh! Your girlfriend’s a good one isn’t she, Billy? I’ll have to remember not to fall out with her.”

HELEN
“But tell us, Billy. What else have you been doing? You can’t have just been to dance floor events in two years. How did you two manage with your bread and butter in two years together?”

BILLY
(nervously) “Ah well…yes you see…we’ve um…we’ve been…”

At that moment, the door bursts open and the Doctor enters.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Nyssa; Billy. There you are!”

NYSSA
“Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“I wondered where I’d find you! Thank goodness you’re alright.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, what’s the matter?! You look all flustered and worried.”

DOCTOR
“I am actually, yes.”

HELEN
“Billy, who is this man?”

SEAN
“Yeah, who is this geezer?”

BILLY
“This is the Doctor. He’s another friend of mine.” (to Doctor) “Doctor, this [is…]”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Hello, everyone. Sorry for not chatting. But I’m afraid I need Nyssa and Billy. Something urgent.”

NYSSA
“Urgent?”

DOCTOR
(quietly) “John Graham’s just fallen off a building!”

BILLY
“John Graham?!”

DOCTOR
(grimly) “Yes. I’ll explain later.”

SEAN
(disturbed) “John Graham? Dead? How shocking!”

DOCTOR
(to everyone) “Very pleased to meet you all. But I’m afraid I have to take Nyssa and Billy with me. Come on, Nyssa; Billy.”

NYSSA
“Why do you need us, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“You’re the bio-electronics expert, Nyssa. You might be able to determine what’s happened to John.”

ALEXANDRA
(baffled) “Bio-what?”

DOCTOR
“And you Billy maybe able to help regarding John’s condition. Since you know him.”

BILLY
“Is he in the hospital now?”

DOCTOR
“I’m afraid so. Let’s go, you two.”

Nyssa and Billy get up from their tables, as they and the Doctor leave.

TINA
(puzzled) “But…what about your meals?”

NYSSA
(to Alexandra) “Thanks for the meal, Mrs. Black. It was very nice.”

BILLY
“Yeah thanks, Alexandra.”

ALEXANDRA
“Don’t mention it.”

DOCTOR
“Come on, you two! Goodbye all!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy make to leave.

SEAN
(cries) “‘Ere! Billy! Catch up with you later sometime!”

BILLY
“Yes, I hope so too.”

DOCTOR
“Come on, Billy! Let’s go!”

Billy follows after the Doctor and Nyssa, as they leave the pub.

TINA
“Well! That was a pleasant surprise!”

HELEN
“Indeed it was. Billy Walker after all this time! And with a girlfriend!”

SEAN
“I’ll say this for him. He’s a lucky man.”

ALEXANDRA
(bitterly) “I’ve never been so humiliated in all my life!”

Alexandra gets up from the table, as she picks up the glasses and plates from the table on a tray and storms off into the back room. Sean, Helen and Tina remain seated and puzzled.

HELEN
“Well…what was all that about?!”

SCENE #62 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – DAY, EVENING
In the ops room of the underground Dwaxi base, Commander Zurlt gives his commands to Kolgu and Bolesh.

ZURLT
(fiercely) “And I want Mullog to speed up those drug despatches as soon as possible! We’re expecting the Berserker to send our agent, but I want better work from that bozo!”

KOLGU
“You’re stupid twerp, Commander! You do know he will do it for our Directors!”

ZURLT
(spits) “You’re very insolent, Kolgu. It’s a privilege as commander to spit on my troops when they speak against me!”

KOLGU
“That other man has been taken care of! The one that’s useless! Mullog took care of him!”

ZURLT
“Good. We don’t want weaklings. He didn’t do what he was asked properly.”

KOLGU
“He didn’t even start the job! The loser!!!”

Just then, an alarm goes off.

BOLESH
“Sir? One of our agents has arrived. He wishes to see you.”

ZURLT
(bitterly) “Right! Send him in!”

Bolesh looks to see about sending their agent in.

KOLGU
“What does that soft loser want?!”

ZURLT
“You shut your mouth, Kolgu! Just get on with your work! I’ll handle this!” (bitterly) “Get a move on, will you!”

KOLGU
“Yes, sir.”

Kolgu leaves bitterly, before the door opens and Fred Walker enters. An uncomfortable silence ensues.

FRED
“Hello? I’ve come to see you.”

ZURLT
(bitterly) “Step forward, wimp.”

FRED
“Please. Don’t hurt me.”

ZURLT
(shouts savagely) “Get in here, will you!!!”

Frightened but with courage, Fred steps forward.

ZURLT
“Well?!”

FRED
“I’m Fred Walker. You remember me…?”

ZURLT
(interjects) “I know well who you are, you dog!” (shouts) “Tell me what it is you want?!!! Now!!!”

FRED
“Please don’t shout at me! Must you be so loud?”

ZURLT
(shouts) “I can shout all I like! Don’t you tell me what to do or I’ll smack your face into bits!!!”

FRED
“Alright, alright. You’ve made your point!”

Zurlt then smacks Fred in the face.

ZURLT
(bitterly) “I don’t think I have. You should have realised you were going to work for big bullies like us! We’re bullies, remember! Bullies!!! We like beating people up! We like to see weaklings go pop, pop, pop!!!”

FRED
(cries; protests) “I didn’t choose to work for you!”

ZURLT
“No! We made you work for us! We forced you! And it’s how we like it!!! Ha, Ha, Ha!!!”

Zurlt pushes Fred to the floor. Fred becomes terrified.

FRED
(pleads) “Please! Let me speak!”

ZURLT
(cruelly) “Get on with it and buzz off!”

Moment of tense silence, as Fred gets up.

ZURLT
“Speak!!!”

FRED
“Alright, alright! I was just about to say…”

ZURLT
(impatiently) “Come on, come on! I haven’t got all day!”

FRED
“What do you intend to do with my son?!”

ZURLT
“None of your business! You do what we ask you to do! Got it?!”

FRED
“I don’t want to see him getting hurt!”

ZURLT
“Well, tough! Because he’s going to be! So live with it!”

FRED
“I beg of you!”

ZURLT
(cruelly) “No good trying to beg us, loser! We won’t listen! We’re fighters! We kick people to death and pull out their bloody hearts! Just as we’ll do to your son! Let us have fun and enjoy it!!!”

FRED
(pleads) “Have mercy! Spare my son! Let him live!”

ZURLT
“No!!! We will spare no-one!!! No-one lives!!! No-one survives!!!”

Zurlt smashes his fists and pushes a table over in anger.

FRED
(pleads, terrified) “Please! Just stop!!!”

Zurlt grabs Fred violently and holds him by the jaw. Fred tries to breathe whilst Zurlt holds him.

ZURLT
(bitterly) “Don’t you ever tell us to stop?! We are the rulers and no-one tells us what not to do! We’re bad!!! We like it that way!!! Got it, loser!!!”

Zurlt holds Fred tightly before pushing him aside. Fred staggers once he’s released before standing up.

FRED
(grimly) “Yes. I get it.” (Pause) “I shall go now. I pleaded. I have my answer.”

ZURLT
“Then go!!! Get out of here!!! Go on!!! Get out!!!”

Fred reluctantly leaves the Dwaxi control room, upset and hurt. Zurlt stands triumphantly and laughs mockingly once Fred’s gone.

SCENE #63 – INT – MEDICAL WARD, CHURCHWOOD HOSPITAL – DAY, EVENING
At Churchwood Hospital, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy check up on the recently departed John Graham.

NYSSA
“Is there anything you can do, Doctor? To revive him.”

DOCTOR
“I’m sorry, Nyssa. He died from a very long fall. The bullet holes make it impossible to save him.”

BILLY
“He was just an ordinary guy, John. He didn’t deserve this.”

NYSSA
“Did you know him very well?”

BILLY
“Not really. We met at school. Chatted and became friendly. He was a bit rough. Tended to smoke a lot.”

NYSSA
“Smoke?”

BILLY
“Um…cigarettes.”

NYSSA
“Oh, I see.”

BILLY
“But apart from that, he was quite harmless. He tended to tell a good joke once in a while and everyone seemed okay with him.” (Pause) “Those bullet holes, Doctor? Would they ring a bell with you?”

DOCTOR
“The bullets holes obviously come from an advanced form of weapon. Advanced beyond nineteen sixties standards. But it’s hazardous to guess. If I had one of these bullets, I would know.”

NYSSA
“Some may still be in his body. Or at the scene of the crime. Perhaps we should find out.”

BILLY
(realises) “Hey! I think there’s a half a bullet in him!”

The Doctor and Nyssa look to see what Billy has discovered.

NYSSA
“Yes you’re right, Billy. It’s there in plain sight.”

BILLY
“Hang on. I’ll take it out of him.”

DOCTOR
“Err Billy, be careful.”

BILLY
“It’s alright, Doctor. I can manage this.”

DOCTOR
(rising panic) “No Billy, don’t!”

But it’s too late, as Billy takes the bullet out of John’s body whilst the Doctor and Nyssa get panicky. Fortunately, it doesn’t go off.

BILLY
“There you are. I told you it was a half bullet.”

NYSSA
“Thank goodness it didn’t go off when you took it out, Billy. You might have set it off.”

DOCTOR
“Very foolish thing to do, Billy. You could have blown your head off taking that bullet out.”

BILLY
(apologetically) “Sorry. I was only trying to help. It won’t happen again.”

NYSSA
“Well…at least I’ve got something to analyse.”

DOCTOR
“The bullet’s not the issue I’m afraid, Nyssa. See this mark here on his neck.”

Nyssa and Billy look to see the mark the Doctor’s seen on John Graham’s neck.

BILLY
(astonished) “Phew! He’s got a sore mark there!”

DOCTOR
“What can you make of it, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“It appears to be a sore mark.” (Pause) “Yet it’s blood red. It doesn’t appear to be healing. It seems to be protruding at an accelerated rate.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. That’s what I was thinking.”

BILLY
“He took something then. A drug?”

DOCTOR
“Very likely. But there aren’t enough clues to back that up.”

NYSSA
(curiously) “What condition was John in when he died? Was it a panic attack?”

DOCTOR
“I’d say it was a nervous breakdown. He certainly was beating himself up a lot on that rooftop. He tended to shout a lot as well. I thought…”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
“Yes? You thought what, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Hostile action, violent and wild behaviour. That’s the way Maria behaved.”

BILLY
“Maria Black? John used to have a crush on her.”

DOCTOR
“Did he indeed?” (Pause) “Nyssa; Billy? I’m going to check on Maria. Find out more about her current condition. She’s being held in a special ward.”

NYSSA
“And whilst you do that, Billy and I will go back to the TARDIS to investigate further about John’s death; the origins of this bullet and where it came from. It might explain something as to the cause of death as well as Maria’s condition.”

DOCTOR
“One step ahead of me, Nyssa. As always.”

BILLY
“I wish I could be as quick thinking as you, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Ah but then you’re not a Trakenite or a Time Lord like me and the Doctor, Billy.”

BILLY
“No, I’m not.”

NYSSA
“But you’re good, Billy. Really good.”

DOCTOR
“No time for pleasant words. We must sort this out once and for all. I’ll go and check Maria.”

NYSSA
“I’d better take a blood sample from John before we go. To help me find the cause of death with this bullet.”

DOCTOR
“Excellent! Now…whilst you do that, I’ll be on my way.”

NYSSA
“Take care, Doctor.”

BILLY
“Yeah! You look after yourself, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“You too, Nyssa; Billy. See you two later.”

The Doctor leaves, whilst Nyssa takes a blood sample from John with Billy standing beside her.

BILLY
“I didn’t expect so many changes when I got back after two years. People getting killed, taking drugs…people getting married.”

NYSSA
“Believe me, Billy. You’re coping well.”

BILLY
“Hmm.” (Pause) “Girls’ skirts are getting shorter too. Have you noticed that?”

NYSSA
(changes subject) “Here. Help me with this blood sample. It’ll take your mind off it.”

Billy reluctantly agrees, as he helps Nyssa.

SCENE #64 – INT – OPS ROOM, DWAXI BASE – DAY, EVENING
In the ops room of the underground Dwaxi base, Commander Zurlt talks to Mrs. Pratt and the Berserker who’ve come to give their report.

ZURLT
“You’ve managed to lure the boy here as well as his friends! Well done! Now we can carry on with the next part of the Directors’ agenda!”

BERSERKER
(yells) “WHAT ABOUT ME?! I WANT TO FIGHT! I WANT TO KILL! I WANT TO SMASH THINGS APART AND BLOW PEOPLE UP!!!”

The Berserker then smashes things up, much to Zurlt’s annoyance.

ZURLT
(shouts) “Stop it, you stupid idiot! You’ll get your fight soon enough!”

BERSERKER
(screams) “I WANT TO FIGHT AND I WANT TO DO IT NOW! NOT TO BE HANGING AROUND WITH SOME OLD DECREPID BAGGY HAG!!!”

MRS. PRATT
“Can’t you make your boys polite and civilised for once, Commander Zurlt?”

ZURLT
“We’re not civilised, Pratt! We want more drugs; spit and vomit on those who say they want peace! A word that I hate! We want blood and dirt all over!”

BERSERKER
(chants) “YEAH! LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR! LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR! LET THE BODIES HIT THE…”

ZURLT
(shouts) “Will you shut up, Berserker!”

MRS. PRATT
“Is there anything else you want me to do for you before I head off home? I’m sick of having to listen to you. Fighting like a bunch of misbehaved children.”

ZURLT
(spitefully) “There is something else we want you to do, Mrs. Pratt. For the glory of the Directors.”

MRS. PRATT
“And pray what may that be, Commander?”

Zurlt then presents a set of drug tablets to Mrs. Pratt.

ZURLT
“These are Yentias tablets. Our drugs.”

MRS. PRATT
“What about them?”

ZURLT
“We plan to plant each of these in the drinks of those pathetic weaklings!”

BERSERKER
(harshly) “YEAH! WEAKLING! PATHETIC DUMB DISGUSTING!!!”

ZURLT
“We want you Pratt to plant these tablets into the drinks of your acquaintances and everyone who attends the pub called Glass & Hound. This will make everyone suffer and cough blood when they have their drink. They will think and act like us once taking them.”

MRS. PRATT
(shocked) “You expect me…a woman of my status to plant everyone with these pills you use to keep you going?”

ZURLT
(bitterly) “That is the idea! Got it!”

MRS PRATT
(appalled) “Where did you get an idea like that from?!”

ZURLT
(viciously) “Everyone in our world sucks on the drug! When they drink at pubs, bars and nightclubs! We thrive on it! We thirst for it! We ache for it!”

MRS. PRATT
(defiantly) “Well…this isn’t your world, you ghastly man!”

BERSERKER
“YOU REFUSE TO PLANT THE DRUGS YOU UGLY WITCH!!!”

MRS. PRATT
“I do! I utterly refuse!”

ZURLT
(threateningly) “It would be unwise to refuse, Mrs. Pratt. We’ve made arrangements for the Berserker to…”

MRS. PRATT
(defiantly) “No! I already did your dirty work with the boy and will have nothing more to do with your people. Goodbye, gentlemen. Or in your case…goodbye, you scoundrels.”

Mrs. Pratt makes to leave, before the Berserker stops her.

BERSERKER
(yells) “YOU WILL NOT GO! I’LL PLUCK YOUR EYES OUT AND KICK YOUR…”

ZURLT
(interrupts) “Berserker! That’s enough! Let her go!”

BERSERKER
(yells) “I WILL NOT…”

ZURLT
(impatiently) “I said ‘let her go’!”

BERSERKER
(yells) “I WILL KILL HER! I WILL KILL HER!!!”

ZURLT
(shouts) “Do I say! Or I shall tell the Directors on you and they’ll take away your drug privileges!”

The Berserker fumes with anger, as he smacks his fists repeatedly. He lets out an enraged yell before stepping away from Mrs. Pratt.

ZURLT
(to Mrs. Pratt) “Get lost, you crone! Before I change my mind and have the Berserker eat your head off!”

MRS. PRATT
“Thank you, Commander.”

Mrs. Pratt makes her way out of the control room and leaves. As soon as she’s gone, the Berserker turns on Zurlt.

BERSERKER
(yells) “WHY DID YOU LET HER GO? WE COULD HAVE SMASHED HER FACE OFF WITH A…”

ZURLT
(interrupts) “Will you shut up, stupid? I’m letting her go as part of the plan!”

BERSERKER
“PLAN?! WHAT PLAN!”

ZURLT
“The plan to kill her! And you shall handle the killing!”

The Berserker grunts and becomes silent once he hears Zurlt’s command. The Berserker listens, as Zurlt is about to explain.

SCENE #65 – INT – INTENSIVE WARD #1, CHURCHWOOD HOSPITAL – DAY, EVENING
In one of the intensive wards at Churchwood Hospital, the Doctor observes Maria in a glass cell. A nurse named Jenny also watches Maria with the Doctor. Maria goes wild beyond belief, as she smashes walls and hits on the glass, screaming and crying.

DOCTOR
“How long has she been like this?”

JENNY
“Ever since she was first brought in here? It’s mind-boggling. She’s done nothing but scream her head off for the past five hours.”

DOCTOR
“Like the boy with the evil spirit in Mark’s gospel, chapter nine, verses fourteen to thirty-two.”

JENNY
“We’ve tried all the best tranquilizers. But she just seems to carry on. Never tiring out!”

Maria interrupts them, as she bangs on the glass door and shouts at them.

MARIA
(yells) “Let me out!!! Let me out of this place!!!”

JENNY
“Maria, please. You need to slow down. Nobody’s going to hurt you.”

MARIA
(shouts) “Keep away! Keep away, you monsters!”

DOCTOR
“Maria, listen. I’m the Doctor. I can help. If you just tell me…”

MARIA
(yells) “I want to be free!!! Let me be free!!!”

Maria bangs hard on the door, as she kicks and beats herself up.

DOCTOR
“Maria, please listen to me! I’ll make things better! You’re going to kill yourself if you don’t…”

MARIA
“Buzz off!!! Buzz off, you lot!!! Leave me alone!!!”

Maria collapses to the floor and cries out in agony, The Doctor and Jenny become troubled.

JENNY
“It’s terrible! The poor girl! She won’t accept help or tell us why she’s like this.”

DOCTOR
“Do you see that mark on her neck? Looks like a swollen mark, except it isn’t.”

JENNY
“Yes, I’ve seen it. The other doctors and nurses can’t make head or tale of it. It can’t be a sore. Or a burn.”

DOCTOR
(to Jenny) “Have her parents been informed? She has got family, I presume.”

JENNY
“Yes, the family’s been informed. They came around earlier. At least I think so.”

DOCTOR
“You think?”

JENNY
“Well, I wasn’t around. This is my night shift. I was told by the other nurse.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm. I see.”

JENNY
“Is there a problem, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Oh no. Not at all. If you say they were here, then fair enough. I’m just wondering if they might know the answer. Or the key to the answer.”

JENNY
“You can ask them if you like. I can get their contact details for you.”

DOCTOR
“And while you’re at it, could you get the contact details for Bruce Simmons. A policeman. He might also have answers.”

SCENE #66 – INT – LIVING ROOM, NO. 10 – DAY, EVENING
Later that night, Mrs. Pratt returns to her house. She enters after shutting the front door of her house.

MRS. PRATT
“Now. Let’s see about a cup of tea.”

Mrs. Pratt soon enters the living room and drops the house-keys on one of the tables. She makes for the kitchen and turns the light on. Mrs. Pratt puts the kettle on to boil before she returns to the living room.

MRS. PRATT
“Let’s see if there’s anything good on the telly. Probably that horrible children’s show they’ve got on with that doctor…”

As Mrs. Pratt turns the living room’s light on, she sees the Berserker there, growling furiously at her.

MRS. PRATT
(gasps) “You!”

BERSERKER
(shouts) “HELLO, OLD HAG! SURPRISED TO SEE ME, ARE YOU?!!!”

MRS. PRATT
“What are you doing here?!”

BERSERKER
(mockingly) “YOU SEE WHAT I’VE GOT HERE, DO YOU? A BIG HAMMER!!!”

MRS. PRATT
“Keep away from me, you! Keep away!”

BERSERKER
“WE USE THESE TO BASH PEOPLE’S BRAINS OUT. GUESS WHOSE BRAIN I’M GOING TO BASH OUT!!!”

MRS. PRATT
(terrified) “No. No!!! No, don’t!!!”

Mrs. Pratt makes a run for it and tries to make for the living room door. But the Berserker jumps on her immediately. He slams his hammer onto her head and bashes her to death, howling angrily.

MRS. PRATT
(screams) “Stop! Please, stop!!!”

BERSERKER
“DIE, OLD WOMAN! DIE, DIE, DIE!!!”

With one last slam of his hammer, the Berserker kills Mrs. Pratt. She finishes up dead with her head cracked open. The Berserker spits on her viciously, before he gets up and kicks her corpse.

BERSERKER
(laughs horribly) “I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY ENJOYED THAT!” (laughs) “HAVE A NICE TIME IN HELL!!!”

The Berserker then teleports himself out, leaving a dead Mrs. Pratt. As soon as he’s gone, the kettle starts to boil, whistling furiously.

Flipping hell Tim, Mary Whitehouse is turning in her grave, I’d love her to have read this story she’d wet her knickers lol.

Awesome chapter, Mrs Pratt got her comeuppance & a gruesome death “she got hammered” lol, that was brutal Tim, this is a very dark story & I’m loving it, a nice nod to Remembrance Of The Daleks, Mrs Pratt doesn’t like Doctor… then lol.

The scene Billy enters the pub is straight out a Clint Eastwood western as everyone goes quiet lol, i felt Sean is belittling of Billy & is a tad jealous, i loved the scene when Nyssa nicely put Sean in his place.

The Doctor is brilliantly written in this & i can see him dashing around piecing the clues together, i was shocked Mr Walker been grudging helping the Dwaxi, there’s more to this linking with Billy i think, John’s death was horrific you ain’t holding back in this story Tim, a excellent chapter mate.

      Hi Simon.

Very pleased you enjoyed Chapter 6 of ‘Dawn of the Dwaxi’. Yeah, not sure what Mary Whitehouse would do if this story was made for TV back in the 80s, but I’m sure she would complain about it.

Yeah it was a brutal, gruesome death for Mrs. Pratt wasn’t it. But it demonstrates how brutal the Dwaxi can be and the Berserker is outright insane and bonkers anyway. Glad you enjoyed the nod to ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ in the story, Simon. I checked and thankfully I set that scene during the evening as that would have been for ‘Doctor Who’ in 1965 wouldn’t it?

Glad you enjoyed the scene where Billy enters the pub and reunites with everyone and introduces Nyssa. That’s my favourite scene in the story. Yeah Sean does seem to belittle Billy in this story and perhaps is a bit jealous of him. Very pleased you liked it when Nyssa nicely put Sean in his place.

Very pleased you like how I’ve written the Doctor in the story. Glad I shocked you when Fred was reluctantly helping the Dwaxi. Glad you found John’s death horrific. I don’t know how I’ve gone with this story being so dark, but I think it needs it concerning the Dwaxi as they are pretty vicious when dealing things.

Look forward to hearing from you in the next chapter. Hope you’ll enjoy more of the story.

      Tim. 🙂
