‘Cuddles’, Chapter 1

1. “Cuddles Is Alive!”

SCENE #2 – INT – LIVING ROOM, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, EVENING
Two months later, it is now the 21st of December 2012. Billy decorates the Christmas tree in the living room just as Nyssa enters and returns home.

NYSSA
(calls) “Billy? Billy, I’m home. Where are you?”

BILLY
(calls back) “I’m in the living room, Nyssa dear. Decorating the Christmas tree.”

Nyssa enters the living room.

NYSSA
“Ah! There you are!” (impressed) “Oh I like the tree!”

BILLY
“Thanks. Meets with your approval, then?”

NYSSA
“Yes. It reminds me of the ‘tree festivals’ we used to have on Traken. In the groves when I was young.”

BILLY
“Oh I wish I could have seen those festivals. A Trakentie Christmas? I can just imagine it!”

NYSSA
“You’ve done a fantastic job with our Christmas tree, Billy. I really mean it.”

BILLY
“Thank you. I try my best.”

Billy stops decorating the tree and gives Nyssa a kiss.

NYSSA
“Sorry I’m late. I wanted to finish an assignment at work before finishing for Christmas.”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “That’s alright. No need to apologise. I’ve been enjoying my half-day this afternoon.” (realises) “Oh! Is it my turn to make dinner?”

NYSSA
“No, it’s mine. Don’t worry; I’ve bought some fish and chips on my way home.”

BILLY
“So I see.”

Billy follows Nyssa into the kitchen, as she carries a bag of fish and chips with her.

SCENE #3 – INT – KITCHEN, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, EVENING
In the kitchen, Nyssa sorts out the fish and chips onto plates with Billy helping her.

BILLY
“Was it a big assignment you had to do?”

NYSSA
“Yes. Dr. Charlesworth worked me hard today. He’s nice enough but he takes my skills for granted. Thinks of me as a technical whizz than just a person.”

BILLY
(teasingly) “Oh I thought that’s what you were.”

NYSSA
(gets the joke) “Very funny, Billy. Very funny.”

BILLY
“Was it patients’ records you had to deal with today?”

NYSSA
“Not really. It was to do with the Clements’ Pictorial Health Stability Program. C-P-H-S-P for short. I mentioned it to you about it before.”

BILLY
“Oh yes. I do recall you saying about it. I’ve forgotten most of it really.”

NYSSA
“Did you have enough work to keep you occupied, Billy?”

BILLY
“Oh a fair amount. A group of specialists wanted some prints of a particular photo. Usual routine. Did checks on the negatives to see that they were undamaged and that the prints were easily viewable.”

NYSSA
“Well that’s good to hear.”

BILLY
(gradually) “Were the girls having their cat fight at work today?”

NYSSA
“Yes. I doubt Francesca and Sally will ever resolve their differences after Christmas.”

BILLY
“Hmm.” (Pause) “I’m glad you’re home, Nyssa. I’ve missed you this afternoon.”

NYSSA
“I’m glad to be home, Billy. Thank you so much for waiting for me.”

BILLY
“Yes. You go and sit yourself down at the dining table, Nyssa. I’ll bring these plates in.”

Nyssa and Billy giggle as they make their way into the dining room with their fish and chips.

SCENE #4 – INT – DINING ROOM, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, EVENING
In the dining room, Nyssa and Billy sit at the table with their fish and chips. Cuddles is sitting on the table already. Nyssa picks him up to play with.

NYSSA
(to Cuddles) “Hello, Cuddles! How are you? Been looking after Billy for me?”

BILLY
(as Cuddles) “Wuff!”

NYSSA
“Good; good.”

Nyssa kisses Cuddles before putting him back on the table again whilst she and Billy start their dinner.

BILLY
(puzzled) “Wasn’t it cottage pie we were supposed to be having?”

NYSSA
“Yes. I didn’t feel like using the microwave today.”

BILLY
“Oh. You usually like using the ‘microwave’ to cook meals. This isn’t like you, Nyssa. Buying fish and chips instead.”

NYSSA
“Sorry, Billy. I didn’t mean to put you out.”

BILLY
“No, no. You’re not putting me out at all. You’re tired. I understand.”

NYSSA
“Prepared meals aren’t quite to their usual standards. It may be written on the packaging, but I don’t think we’d like the new cottage pie. I bought it from a different supermarket. Some of their other products are a little dodgy.”

BILLY
(teases) “You’re saying this because you want me to make spaghetti bolognese for you.”

NYSSA
“As if I would.”

BILLY
(laughs) “I’ll buy the ingredients tomorrow, if that’s what you want.”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Billy. That’s very sweet of you.” (Pause) “Perhaps we can go into town tomorrow to do some Christmas shopping. Have a small breakfast whilst we’re there before the ‘big rush’.”

BILLY
(thinks) “Yes alright, we’ll go into town tomorrow. I trust your judgement, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Good. I have a few things in mind to buy before Christmas Day.”

BILLY
“Oh? Am I allowed in to know what you’re thinking of buying?”

NYSSA
“No. It’ll spoil the surprise if I told you.”

BILLY
(groans) “Oh!” (Pause) “Speaking of Christmas…do you think we’ll see the Doctor again?”

NYSSA
(thinks) “I hope so. It’s been two months. I wonder what’s become of him.”

BILLY
“Oh, I’m sure he’s alright. He must have sorted out that matter he was dealing with by now.”

NYSSA
“It’ll depend on the place and time he’s in. It may not run concurrent with ours.”

BILLY
“Oh yes. Wibbly–wobbly timey-wimey, hey?” (Pause) “Well I hope he won’t interrupt us with any catastrophe on Christmas Day.”

NYSSA
“Same here.”

They continue eating their fish and chips before they stop for a moment and put their knives and forks down.

BILLY
“You know something, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“What?”

BILLY
“These fish and chips aren’t to our usual standard. They’re rather soggy, aren’t they?”

NYSSA
“I’m going to have to complain about this at the fish and chip shop tomorrow morning.”

SCENE #5 – EXT – LLEWELLYN STREET, SWANSEA – DAY, EVENING
Outside in Llewellyn Street in Swansea, a strange alien presence falls from the sky. It circles and makes a whizzing sound before approaching the back entrance of Nyssa and Billy’s house.

SCENE #6 – INT – BEDROOM, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, EVENING
Later that night, Nyssa and Billy get ready for bed. Billy writes on a paper pad whilst Nyssa gets dressed in her nightie.

NYSSA
“What’s that you’re writing there, Billy?”

BILLY
(gradually) “A little poem by Cuddles, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(astonished) “Cuddles?”

BILLY
“Yeah. Listen to this!”

NYSSA
(mesmerized) “Billy, I can’t understand your lively belief that Cuddles is real. He is a toy after all.”

BILLY
“Do you want to hear this poem?”

NYSSA
“Go on then. I suppose I’ll regret it.”

BILLY
“Right. Here we go.”

Billy clears his throat as he picks the pad and reads the poem with Cuddles beside him.

BILLY
(reads; as Cuddles) “I am Cuddles; And I love Nyssa puddles; Yes I’m Cuddles; Full of loving huggles…”

NYSSA
(bewildered) “Pardon?”

BILLY
“Ssh-ssh!”” (continues; reads; as Cuddles) “When master takes away her pics; It doesn’t deprive me of her kisses; Yes I am Cuddles; And I love Nyssa puddles…”

Nyssa giggles.

BILLY
(continues; reads; as Cuddles) “Nyssa loves me too; And sticks to me like glue; Nyssa loves Cuddles; Because Cuddles is cute, small and furry; And Nyssa is sexy and girlie; For a doggie called Cuddles!”

Nyssa laughs.

BILLY
(continues; reads; as Cuddles) “And though I get parted from my love; Nyssa knows that Cuddles loves her puddles; And I know she loves me tubbles; A photo of happy Nyssa cuddling me; Is all the proof I need; That Nyssa wants to marry me…”

NYSSA
(amused) “Billy, stop it!”

BILLY
(continues; reads; as Cuddles) “To have me as her love food; For I am loyal, true and good; And so Nyssa, here I am; Cuddles – the doggie that loves you puddles!”

Nyssa laughs away.

BILLY
(pleased) “You liked that, didn’t you?”

NYSSA
(laughs) “That’s one of the silliest things you’ve ever written, Billy.” (Pause) “But you’re very sweet, you are.”

Nyssa kisses Billy.

BILLY
“Hey, it’s Cuddles you should thank. Not me. He wrote the poem.”

Billy passes Cuddles to Nyssa.

BILLY
(as Cuddles) “Wuff! Wuff! Wuff!”

Cuddles kisses all over Nyssa by Billy.

NYSSA
“Alright, Cuddles, stop it! Stop it. Thank you for the poem. It was very nice.” (Pause) “I’ll put you here on my bedside table.”

Nyssa takes Cuddles from Billy and puts him to one side on her bedside table. Billy then takes out some photos to show to Nyssa, each in turn.

BILLY
“Here, Nyssa! I also got these. They were developed recently.”

NYSSA
“Oh. Are these our photos, Billy?”

BILLY
“Yes, they are. Look. This is the photo of you and me at the front of the house with Cuddles.”

Billy shows Nyssa the next one.

BILLY
“This one here. That was when we were in front of that castle…well, sort of castle…at the Rotenhend space hotel. There you are in that green jacket and black skirt.”

NYSSA
“Oh yes! That’s my favourite photo!”

BILLY
“Is it really? Well, well, well. It’s my favourite photo too! You look lovely there!”

Billy then shows Nyssa the last photo.

BILLY
“And this is one with just you and Cuddles. That’s his favourite, you know?”

NYSSA
“Is that why wrote that poem? Because you were looking through all these pictures?”

BILLY
“Well, I felt in the mood when seeing these which is surprising because poetry isn’t my strong point.”

NYSSA
“I really like these pictures of us, Billy. Thank you for taking them.”

BILLY
“Thank you. I’m glad you like them.”

Billy eventually puts the photos away in a drawer in his bedside table. Nyssa and Billy then settle down to sleep in bed as they kiss each other goodnight.

NYSSA
“Good night, Billy dear.”

BILLY
“Good night, Nyssa sweetheart. Have a nice sleep.”

They soon turn the bed lights off and go to sleep.

SCENE #7 – INT – BEDROOM, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Later that night, Nyssa and Billy are fast asleep. The bedroom window then slowly opens and the alien presence enters inside, whizzing quietly. A gentle breeze winds its way in, causing Nyssa to stir.

NYSSA
(shivers; sleepily) “Billy?”

BILLY
(sleepily) “Hmm?”

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Have you left the bedroom window open?”

BILLY
(sleepily) “No. Why?”

NYSSA
(sleepily) “I can feel a breeze.”

Very soon, the window closes shut. All is quiet again.

BILLY
(sleepily) “I can’t feel anything. You must have been dreaming.”

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Hmm?” (Pause) “Yes. That must be it.”

BILLY
(sleepily) “Go to sleep, dear.”

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Yes.”

Nyssa goes back to sleep and so does Billy. Meanwhile, the alien presence makes it way searching the bedroom whizzing quietly. It comes across Nyssa’s bedside table where Cuddles is seated. With a whishing noise, the presence enters Cuddles. The alien presence takes possession of him, as the whishing noise soon dies down. In that instant, Cuddles wakes up and comes to life. Cuddles sniffs the air like an ordinary dog does before he barks.

CUDDLES
(barks) “Woof! Woof!”

Suddenly alive, soon Cuddles gets onto Nyssa in bed, and makes his way up on the blankets to her, sniffing as he goes. Once on the top, he looks down on Nyssa, sniffing to pick up her scent.

CUDDLES
(barks) “Woof!” (Pause) “Woof!”

In an instant, Cuddles kisses all over Nyssa. Kissing her face, Nyssa becomes annoyed in her sleep, trying to shake Cuddles off.

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Stop it!”

Despite being shaken off, Cuddles makes his way back onto Nyssa and kisses her again. She gets even more annoyed in her sleep.

CUDDLES
(barks) “Wuff! Wuff! WUFF!!!”

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Billy; please stop it! I’m tired. I want to go to sleep.”

Cuddles stops kissing Nyssa for a moment.

CUDDLES
(confused; barks) “Woof?” (gets sad) “Wuff-wuff!”

Cuddles then kisses Nyssa again.

NYSSA
(groans) “Oh for goodness sake.”

Nyssa eventually rolls over to where Billy is. She knocks Cuddles off the bed as he falls to the floor.

CUDDLES
(cries) “Wuff!”

Cuddles ends up on the floor whilst Nyssa cuddles up to Billy.

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Come here, Billy. Let me cuddle up to you if that’s what you want.”

BILLY
(sleepily) “Hmm?”

Cuddles climbs back up onto the bed to see Nyssa cuddling Billy. Cuddles becomes sad and begins to sob away.

CUDDLES
(sobs) “Wuff, wuff, wuff, WUFF!!!!!”

Cuddles makes his way off the bed, panting. He leaves the bedroom as the night draws on.

SCENE #8 – INT – MAIN HALL, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, MORNING
Next morning, Billy makes his way downstairs after getting dressed and brushing his teeth. He yawns away once he’s at the bottom of the stairs and makes for the letter box.

BILLY
(yawns) “Post, post, post.”

Opening the letter box, he takes out the post and checks it.

BILLY
“Hmm. Not exciting. Bills.” (Pause) “Ah well, here’s goes another day with no Christmas card from the Doctor.”

Billy, with the post in his hand, makes his way for the living room.

BILLY
(calls) “Nyssa, are you in here?”

Billy enters the living room, not realising Cuddles is following behind him.

SCENE #9 – INT – LIVING ROOM, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, MORNING
In the living room, Billy finds Nyssa watching television. He sits on the settee with her.

BILLY
“Morning, sweetheart!”

NYSSA
“Morning, Billy.”

Both kiss each other good morning.

BILLY
“Oh. Cookery on TV. Is this in preparation for Christmas dinner on your part perhaps?”

NYSSA
(sweetly) “Not really.” (Pause) “Has there been any post today, dear?”

BILLY
“Nothing of interest. Just bills today, I’m afraid.”

NYSSA
“I flicked to this channel after watching the news. Everything seems depressing in the world at the moment.”

BILLY
“It usually is, especially at Christmas time. I’m glad to be living in the past.”

NYSSA
“Do you want to set off soon into the town? Before the crowds?”

BILLY
“We can take our time during the day, can’t we? We’re in no rush.”

NYSSA
(shrewdly) “That’s not how you behaved when playing with me last night.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “I beg your pardon?”

NYSSA
“Oh come on, Billy! You had Cuddles all over me whilst I was asleep. You obviously wanted me to cuddle you in bed, so I did. If only to stop you bothering me with that toy dog.”

BILLY
“Nyssa, I was fast asleep as much as you were.”

NYSSA
“Are you trying to deny what happened last night, Billy?”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Nyssa, I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.”

CUDDLES
(interrupts; barks) “Woof; woof!”

Nyssa and Billy jump in fright once they hear Cuddles barking.

NYSSA
“What was that?! A dog?!”

BILLY
“He sounded as if he was in close quarters to where we are.”

CUDDLES
(barks) “Woof; woof!”

Nyssa and Billy then turn to see Cuddles on the floor, staring up at them.

BILLY
(startled) “Nyssa? It’s Cuddles! Our toy dog! He’s down there, see?!”

NYSSA
“I thought he was in the bedroom, Billy.”

Cuddles rises to his feet and stands upright, panting.

BILLY
(surprised) “Nyssa! He’s standing upright on his two feet! He’s moving, Nyssa! Cuddles is moving!”

NYSSA
“Don’t be ridiculous, Billy! He can’t be moving. He’s made of wool, not flesh!”

CUDDLES
(barks) “Wuff; wuff; wuff!””

BILLY
(flabbergasted) “Can’t move, can he? Then how come he’s barking so suddenly?”

NYSSA
(astonished) “This…this is impossible! It’s just…”

Cuddles sniffs away at Nyssa before climbing up her leg.

NYSSA
“Billy! He’s now climbing up my leg!” (Pause) “Now he’s halfway up my body.”

Cuddles climbs to the top of Nyssa’s shoulder and looks at her.

CUDDLES
(happily) “Wuff!”

BILLY
“He’s now staring at you intently, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“Was that a “Hello” he just said, Billy?”

Cuddles then waves at Nyssa with his paw.

CUDDLES
(happily) “Wuff-wuff! Wuff-wuff!”

BILLY
“He’s waving at you! So he must be saying hello!”

NYSSA
(astonished) “This can’t be happening!” (Pause) “He’s alive, Billy! Cuddles is alive!”

CUDDLES
(happily) “Wuff-wuff!”

Nyssa and Billy continued to be astonished as they see Cuddles moving about.

SCENE #10 – INT – LIVING ROOM, NYSSA & BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY, MORNING
A little while later, Nyssa re-enters the living room carrying her handbag, whilst Billy sits with Cuddles on the seatee.

BILLY
“Have you got it?”

NYSSA
“It’s in my handbag somewhere.”

Nyssa searches through her handbag, before taking something out.

NYSSA
“Here it is. My electro-synaptic synthesiser. Now we can use this to pick any readings from Cuddles. Determine how he can move and bark by himself.”

BILLY
“Right. Good.” (to Cuddles) “Hold still, Cuddles. Nyssa’s going to have a look at you. She won’t hurt you, okay?”

CUDDLES
(excited) “Wuff!!!”

NYSSA
“There’s no need to treat him as living, Billy. He’s a toy, remember?”

BILLY
(hushes) “Ssh, don’t tell him that! He might actually think he’s real. If so I don’t think we should upset his feelings.”

NYSSA
(sighs) “Oh really, Billy!”

Nyssa then applies her gadget to Cuddles and scans him. Cuddles jumps up and down excitedly whilst being scanned.

CUDDLES
“Woof-woof-woof-woof-woof!”

NYSSA
“Cuddles, will you please hold still. I can’t do this scan on you if you keep jumping about.”

BILLY
“Hey, hey! Now who’s treating him as if he were real?”

NYSSA
“Just hold him tight, Billy! Stop him jumping up and down whilst he’s being scanned.”

BILLY
“Here, Cuddles! Hold still there. Let Nyssa do her scan on you.”

CUDDLES
(complies) “Wuff!”

Billy holds Cuddles still whilst Nyssa does the scan on him. After a while, Nyssa stops scanning and checks her gadget for the readings.

CUDDLES
(excitedly) “Wuff; wuff! Wuff, wuff!”

BILLY
“Well, Nyssa? What does your gadget say?”

Nyssa absorbs the information on her device before giving an answer.

NYSSA
(gradually; dumbstruck) “This can’t be right! The electro-synaptic synthesiser’s readings are unusual and random. They say he’s alive and yet say he isn’t.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “That doesn’t make any sense.”

NYSSA
“You’re telling me.”

Cuddles then jumps onto Nyssa’s shoulder.

CUDDLES
“Woof!”

BILLY
“He’s on your shoulder now.”

Cuddles then kisses all over Nyssa’s face.

NYSSA
(startled) “And now he’s kissing me!” (to Cuddles) “Cuddles! Stop it! Cuddles, stop it!”

Cuddles stops kissing Nyssa for a moment. He stares at Nyssa momentarily before kissing her again.

NYSSA
“Cuddles, please! Please leave me alone!” (to Billy) “Billy, help me out here!”

BILLY
(to Nyssa) “Hang on! I’ll get him off.” (to Cuddles) “Come on, Cuddles! Get off! Let Nyssa be!”

Billy takes Cuddles off Nyssa’s face. Cuddles then growls fiercely at Billy.

BILLY
“Whoa! Was that a growl?”

NYSSA
“It certainly was. I don’t think he liked it when you took him off me.”

Cuddles growls angrily.

BILLY
“No he didn’t. It’s like he’s jealous of me!”

NYSSA
“Jealous of you? Now come on, Billy! That’s silly!”

BILLY
“It’s the only thing I can think of, Nyssa. Considering I took him off your face.”

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “Billy, watch out! He’s going for your ear!”

Cuddles goes onto Billy’s shoulder and ‘whispers’ in his ear.

BILLY
(reassuringly) “No, no. It’s alright, Nyssa. He’s not attacking me, see?”

NYSSA
“Then what’s he doing? Rubbing in your ear?”

BILLY
(gradually) “No wait!” (to Cuddles) “Hang on! Cuddles, say that again!”

Cuddles ‘whispers’ in Billy’s ear again.

BILLY
(gradually; astonished) “Cripes! I could hear a voice!”

NYSSA
“A voice?! What from Cuddles?”

BILLY
“An actual voice, yes! He was speaking to me, Nyssa! Cuddles was speaking to me!”

NYSSA
“That’s impossible! Anyway, I couldn’t hear anything.”

Cuddles ‘whispers’ in Billy’s ear again.

BILLY
(gradually) “No, wait! He’s actually whispering in my ear. Whispering. Just like Sooty and Sweep on TV.”

NYSSA
“Sooty and Sweep?”

Cuddles whispers again to Billy.

BILLY
“Cuddles wants me to tell you something, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Really?! Well, what is it?”

Cuddles whispers again to Billy.

BILLY
“He says he loves you, Nyssa.”

CUDDLES
(barks) “Wuff-wuff!”

Cuddles pants whilst Nyssa is uneasy.

NYSSA
(uneasy) “Oh. Does he?” (to Cuddles) “Well, err…thank you, Cuddles. I love you too.”

Cuddles whispers in Billy’s ear again.

BILLY
“Oh! Oh dear!”

NYSSA
“What, Billy? What did he say to you?”

BILLY
(gradually) “He says he wants to marry you. He wants to live in a kennel with you.”

CUDDLES
(barks; happily) “Wuff! Wuff!”

NYSSA
“This is the weirdest day I’ve ever had today.”

BILLY
“You’re telling me.”

Cuddles pants happily, whilst Nyssa and Billy are astonished.

SCENE #11 – EXT – EDGE OF CITY CENTRE, SWANSEA – DAY, MORNING
Later that morning, Nyssa and Billy walk down the street to make for the Swansea city centre.

BILLY
(concerned) “How are you, Nyssa? Are you feeling okay?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “I’m worried, Billy. And curious about what’s happening.”

BILLY
“I know. It’s wierd, isn’t it?”

NYSSA
“I wonder if the Doctor is sending us a message and is using Cuddles as a medium.”

BILLY
“You think the Doctor’s involved in this?”

NYSSA
“I’d be surprised if he wasn’t. How and why else would Cuddles be alive so suddenly?”

BILLY
(gradually) “Well, try not to worry about it, Nyssa. We’ve left Cuddles back home. We’ll sort it out when we get back. Let’s enjoy today and think about Christmas shopping, hey?”

NYSSA
“Alright, Billy. I’ll try my best.”

Billy then gives out a startled cry, as something shuffles in his jacket.

NYSSA
“Billy, what’s the matter? Your jacket’s alive!”

BILLY
(agitated) “I know! Something’s moving in one my pockets…”

Billy manages to get his jacket pockets open. Both he and Nyssa are shocked as to what they see inside one of Billy’s jacket pocket.

NYSSA
(shocked) “Cuddles! You were inside Billy’s jacket!”

CUDDLES
(barks) “Woof! Woof!”

BILLY
(shocked) “How did he get in there without me seeing?”

CUDDLES
(barks) “Woof, woof!”

Cuddles then giggles mischievously.

BILLY
(astonished) “He’s giggling! Barking and giggling! I must be barking mad!”

NYSSA
“Billy, now is not the time for one of your puns!”

Cuddles giggles again before he goes over to whisper in Billy’s ear again.

NYSSA
“He’s whispering in your ear again, Billy. What’s he saying?”

Billy listens as Cuddles whispers in his ear.

BILLY
“He says he wanted to come with us for the ride. He’s curious about where we’re going.”

CUDDLES
“Woof; woof! Wuff!”

NYSSA
“This is getting ridiculous, Billy.”

BILLY
“How do you think I feel? People are staring at us with a cuddly toy dog who seems to be alive.”

NYSSA
“We’ll have to keep him hidden once we’re in town. We can’t show him to the public.”

BILLY
“I’ll keep Cuddles hidden in my jacket then. We’ll talk about this whilst we’re having breakfast at that cafe we like.”

CUDDLES
(happily) “Woof, woof!”

NYSSA
“Right then. Come on, Billy.”

CUDDLES
(insistently) “Woof! Woof!”

NYSSA
(reluctantly) “Yes of course. And you, Cuddles.”

CUDDLES
“Woof.”

Cuddles giggles mischievously whilst Nyssa and Billy take him with them into the Swansea city centre.

SCENE #12 – INT – BERTIE’S CAFÉ, SWANSEA – DAY, MORNING
Later on, Nyssa and Billy are at Bertie’s café. Bertie Salt, the café owner, brings Nyssa and Billy’s breakfasts to them at their table.

BERTIE
“There you are, you two! Enjoy your breakfasts!”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Mr. Salt. It’s most welcome.”

BILLY
“Yes thank you, Bertie.”

With that, Bertie Salt leaves.

BILLY
(gratified) “I do enjoy the full works, Nyssa. Sausages; eggs and bacon.”

NYSSA
“Yes, so I see. I’m content with having my fruit salad.”

CUDDLES
(barks; loudly) “Woof; woof; woof!”

BILLY
(sharply) “Cuddles, quiet! Stay in Nyssa’s handbag, will you?”

CUDDLES
(barks; loudly) “Woof; woof; woof!”

BILLY
“Cuddles, stay in Nyssa’s handbag!”

Cuddles doesn’t listen to Billy as he climbs out of Nyssa’s handbag and onto her shoulder.

NYSSA
(to Cuddles) “Cuddles, get down!” (to Billy) “He’s on my shoulder, Billy.”

BILLY
“Yes. I think he’s going to whisper something to you.”

Cuddles on Nyssa’s shoulder whispers in her ear.

BILLY
“Well, what did he say, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “He’s asking ‘where’s his breakfast?’ He wants his sausages.”

BILLY
(gradually) “Well? Are you going to tell him?”

NYSSA
(to Cuddles) “Cuddles, you can’t have breakfast. Not with everyone else watching you.”

Cuddles considers this for a few moments. After this…

BILLY
“He’s shaking his head. He doesn’t seem to agree.”

Cuddles whispers in Nyssa’s ear again.

BILLY
“He’s whispering to you again, Nyssa. What he’s saying now?”

NYSSA
“He says ‘it’s not right’. He wants his sausages.”

CUDDLES
(barks; loudly) “Woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof…”

BILLY
(annoyed) “Cuddles, pack it in! You’re making too much noise!”

NYSSA
“He’ll attract the other customers!”

The other people in the café become distracted by Cuddles’ barking. A few of them murmur under their breath and hush at Nyssa and Billy to keep quiet.

CUDDLES
(persistent; barks; loudly) “Woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof…”

BILLY
(annoyed) “That’s enough, Cuddles! Pack it in, will you?!”

Cuddles pants excitably.

NYSSA
“What are we going to do, Billy? We can’t have him making this commotion.”

BILLY
“Put him back in your handbag, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Right.”

With that, Nyssa picks Cuddles up and stuffs him back into her handbag, zipping it up.

BILLY
“There! We won’t have any more trouble from him now.”

However, Cuddles barks persistently whilst stuffed inside Nyssa’s handbag.

CUDDLES
(muffled; barks) “Woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof; woof!”

NYSSA
“He’s still doing it, Billy! This is ridiculous!”

BILLY
“Oh for goodness sake!”

Nyssa opens her handbag again, unzipping it to reveal Cuddles who pops his head out.

CUDDLES
“Woof!”

NYSSA
“Aww, he looks so cute. Poking his head out from my handbag.”

BILLY
“You’ve changed your tune. Considering he’s not real.”

Cuddles beckons to Nyssa.

NYSSA
“He wants to say something to me.” (to Cuddles) “Yes Cuddles, what is it?”

Nyssa leans in to Cuddles in her handbag as he whispers in her ear.

NYSSA
“Ah!” (to Billy) “He’s complaining about you, Billy.”

BILLY
“Me?! What’s he complaining about me for?”

NYSSA
“He thinks you’re treating him unfairly and abusing him to be stuffed in my handbag. He’s asked me to call the RSPCA.”

BILLY
“You’re not going to, are you?”

NYSSA
(teases) “Well, you have hurt his feelings, Billy.”

BILLY
“Nyssa, you can’t be serious!”

Cuddles whines and pines, before Bertie Salt appears.

BERTIE
“Excuse me, you two! You two are making too much noise!”

NYSSA
“We’re sorry, Mr. Salt. We won’t let it happen again.”

BERTIE
“You’ll leave this café now if you don’t mind.”

BILLY
“Leave?! But we haven’t had our breakfast!”

BERTIE
“Tough. You’ll have to have it somewhere else. And next time you come back…”

NYSSA
(interjects; assuredly) “Mr. Salt, we can explain…”

BERTIE
(ignores Nyssa; continues) “Next time you come back, be less disruptive in this quaint cafeteria of mine. Now be off with you!”

BILLY
(protests) “Now listen here…”

NYSSA
(interjects; reassuringly; to Bertie) “It’s alright. We’re going.” (to Billy) “Come on, Billy. Let’s leave while we can.”

Nyssa and Billy get up. They leave with Cuddles in Nyssa’s handbag out of Bertie’s cafe.

BILLY
(annoyed) “I was so looking forward to my Christmas breakfast.” (to Cuddles) “This is your fault, Cuddles!”

CUDDLES
(low moan) “Woof!”

SCENE #13 – INT – CLOTHES DEPARTMENT, JOHN LEWIS – DAY, AFTERNOON
That afternoon, Nyssa and Billy do some clothes shopping in a ‘John Lewis’ store in Swansea.

NYSSA
“Are you feeling alright now, Billy? After the breakfast incident?”

BILLY
“Was I mumbling and grumbling a lot back there, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“A fair bit, yes.”

BILLY
“Sorry. I didn’t mean [to…]”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, Billy. I feel the same considering the strange turn of events that’s happening today.”

BILLY
“Is Cuddles still safely tucked away in your handbag, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“He’s safe, yes. I haven’t let him out. He’s still not happy about being stuffed in my handbag though.”

Nyssa pats her handbag.

BILLY
“Well, he’ll have to live with it.” (Pause) “Have we done most of the Christmas shopping?”

NYSSA
“Yes. Just about half of it. I find these clothes in this clothes shop splendid. Though they’re not to Traken standards.”

BILLY
(laughs) “You girls are all the same. Obsessed with girly things such as clothes. You’ll want to purchase the whole wardrobe next.”

NYSSA
“Obsessed, are we? Says the man into sport.”

BILLY
“I’m not into sport. The Doctor is. I’m just fascinated by cricket. And I have the Doctor to blame for that, I can tell you.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “I haven’t thought about the Doctor for a while. I’m usually worried about him by this stage.”

BILLY
“There goes to show Christmas puts your mind off things, Nyssa.” (Pause) “Speaking of which, have you bought my Christmas present yet?”

NYSSA
(teases) “Your Christmas present? I bought that last month.”

BILLY
“Last month? But you said…”

NYSSA
(teases) “I didn’t say anything. You jumped to conclusions.”

Just then, a commotion occurs as people scream.

BILLY
(worried) “Hey, Nyssa? What brought this on?”

NYSSA
“Clothes displays; shop window dummies; clothes on hangers. They’re all falling apart. And so are the people.”

Familiar barking noises echo for Nyssa and Billy to hear, as Cuddles makes his way through the wrecked clothes displays.

CUDDLES
(barks; excitedly) “Woof; woof! Woof; woof! Woof; woof!”

BILLY
(shocked) “Oh no! It’s Cuddles! He’s out and being troublesome!”

NYSSA
(shocked) “I thought I’d put him in my handbag!”

BILLY
“Obviously he got out.”

Nyssa checks her handbag.

NYSSA
“Yes! Look what he’s done! He managed to slip out of my handbag through the bottom! It’s clean open!”

BILLY
“How did that happen? Can he chew his way out with his mouth? Or has he got claws?”

NYSSA
(determined) “Look! You go and fetch Cuddles, Billy. He’s small so it won’t be difficult to catch him.”

BILLY
“Hang on a minute! Why should I be the one to catch him?!”

NYSSA
“I got to buy these clothes. I want to pay for them quick before people realise that Cuddles is…’our’ dog.”

BILLY
“Ah. Good thinking, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Once you have him and I’ve bought these clothes, we take Cuddles and go home.”

BILLY
“Home?”

NYSSA
“Yes home, Billy! Go and get Cuddles quickly! Stop him causing all this chaos he’s making!”

Nyssa heads off for the till whilst Billy braves himself to retrieve Cuddles.

CUDDLES
(giggles; barks) “Woof; woof! Woof; woof! WOOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
