‘The Greek Horror’, Chapter 4

4. Retrieving the Second Coin

SCENE #35 – EXT – MARKET STREET, CENTRAL CITY – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile in the Spartan street and not so far away from the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy are on the run as they’re trying to evade their pursuers.

BILLY
“Nyssa, I think we’re out of sight from those Spartan students. If we could find a place to hide…”

NYSSA
“Quick, Billy! Here’s an alleyway! Let’s hide in there!”

Nyssa takes Billy’s hand as they both enter the alleyway to hide from the students. Once Nyssa and Billy have hidden themselves, the students led by their teacher make their way down the street to hunt their fugitives. They run past Nyssa and Billy’s hiding place before they stop in the street.

SPARTAN STUDENT
“Where could they have gone? They were within our sights!”

SPARTAN TEACHER
“They must have absconded. They have fast feet to dodge us!”

SPARTAN STUDENT
“We should go back. Maybe they turned the corner and we missed them.”

SPARTAN TEACHER
“Take a group with you back the way we came. Retrace your steps. Let Ligiea know of our progress should you meet her. I’ll take the rest of the students and search on ahead.”

Acknowledging the teacher’s instruction, the Spartan student splits away, taking a group with him back the way they came. Meanwhile, the Spartan teacher heads off forwards with the rest of his students following him. Once they’ve gone, Nyssa and Billy come out hiding.

BILLY
(relieved) “Thank goodness they’ve gone.”

NYSSA
“They’ll be coming back, Billy. We mustn’t linger here.”

BILLY
“It’s getting dark though. Surely the Spartans wouldn’t be able to see us in the dark.”

NYSSA
“I have a suspicion that the Spartans will be able to hunt us easily via instinct whatever time of day it is. They must have a lack of sleep to be so reckless.”

BILLY
“Almost Dwaxi-like, isn’t it?” (Pause; groans) “I wish we could get away without being seen.”

NYSSA
“I’ve still got my bow and arrows and you’ve still got your sword.”

BILLY
“They’ll have more bows and swords for us to deal with. We’re hardly an army, you know.”

Just then, Nyssa spots something that startles her.

NYSSA
“Billy, look!”

BILLY
“What is it?”

NYSSA
“Over there in the street corner. It’s the Doctor!”

Billy looks to see where Nyssa’s pointing.

BILLY
(realises) “Yes! He’s been captured by Spartans! They must be taking him away for questioning.”

NYSSA
“Quick, Billy, hide! Before they see us!”

With that, Nyssa and Billy duck down as they hide in the alleyway. They watch as the Spartans escort an unconscious Doctor with him. The Spartans pass the alleyway. They’re also accompanied by Kyrillos and the centaurs. Once they’ve gone, Nyssa and Billy come out of hiding again.

NYSSA
(concerned) “He’s in a pretty bad way. The Doctor’s got scorch-marks on his chest.”

BILLY
“That Spartan man who’s leading the group. I think he was there when the Spartans attacked Galenos’ house. He’s got centaurs accompanying him.”

NYSSA
“He’s probably a servant to the one called…Krios, wasn’t it?”

BILLY
“How are we going to get the Doctor back? We must find a way to free him from the Spartans and the centaurs.”

NYSSA
“I wouldn’t like to take my chances with the centaurs.”

BILLY
“Neither do I, now you come to mention it.”

A moment of silence ensues as Nyssa considers for a moment.

NYSSA
(realises) “Billy, I believe I have the answer on how to rescue the Doctor.”

BILLY
“Really? How, dear?”

NYSSA
“Ssh! Back into the dark, quickly. I see Ligiea coming.”

Nyssa and Billy get back into the alleyway again, as Ligiea comes up the street.

BILLY
(whispers) “Are we going to jump her?”

NYSSA
(whispers) “If you’re willing to help me that is.”

After much consideration, Nyssa and Billy wait for the right moment as Ligiea begins to pass their hiding place.

NYSSA
(whispers; cautiously) “Wait for it, Billy. Wait for it.”

They wait for it as Ligiea eventually passes their hiding place.

NYSSA
(whispers) “Now!”

With that, Nyssa and Billy jump on Ligiea and pull her back into the alleyway. Ligiea struggles in Nyssa and Billy’s custody as she tries to break free and fight her way out.

LIGIEA
(cries) “Let go! Let me go, whoever you are…”

Billy covers Ligiea’s mouth with his hand, preventing her from speaking any further. She mumbles whilst Billy covers her mouth with his hand.

BILLY
(taunts) “You don’t recognise us? How insulting!”

NYSSA
“Careful, Billy. We don’t want to harm her.”

Nyssa and Billy keep quiet for a bit whilst Ligiea tries to struggle to break free and talk through Billy covering her mouth with his hand, but to no avail.

NYSSA
(to Ligiea) “Now, you! You’re going to help us get to the Doctor. You’re going to take us to wherever those men are taking him.”

Ligiea manages to bite Billy’s hand, causing him to cry out in pain, in order to speak momentarily.

LIGIEA
“You both can go to the underworld for all I care!”

Billy covers his hand over Ligiea’s mouth again. She mumbles whilst he’s covering her mouth.

BILLY
“Now that wasn’t very nice. Biting my hand.” (Pause) “We’re giving you a fair chance. You will help us.”

Ligiea screams through Billy’s mouth, refusing to help.

BILLY
“Very well. We hate to have to do this.” (to Nyssa) “Nyssa, let’s take this woman out of the city and throw her to those scorpions we met on the way here.”

NYSSA
“Billy, isn’t that a bit extreme?”

BILLY
“We need to show this woman we mean business.”

Ligiea screams in protest through Billy’s hand.

BILLY
“You’ll help us to get to the Doctor?”

Ligiea’s screams through Billy’s hand become even louder.

BILLY
“Nyssa, let’s take her outside.”

LIGIEA
(mumbles) “Wait, wait!”

NYSSA
“Billy, wait. I think Ligiea might have changed her mind. Let her speak.”

Eventually, Billy takes his hand off Ligiea’s mouth in order to let her speak.

LIGIEA
(gradually) “Alright. I’ll do as you request of me.” (Pause) “My husband and his soldiers are taking your friend, the Doctor, to the shrine of Krios in the temple.”

NYSSA
“Then you’d better take us to the shine inside the temple, hadn’t you?”

BILLY
“And no tricks as we go there. I have my sword behind your back, you see.”

Ligiea whimpers as she feels the sting of Billy’s sword behind her back.

NYSSA
“Come on. Let’s go to the temple.” (whispers; to Billy) “Billy, we’ll keep to the shadows.” (to Ligiea) “Lead on, Ligiea.”

With that, Nyssa and Billy have Ligiea lead them to where the Doctor is in the Spartan temple.

SCENE #36 – INT – KRIOS’ SHRINE, SPARTAN TEMPLE – DAY, EVENING
Inside the Spartan temple, the Doctor wakes up as he finds himself being led to Krios’ shrine by Kyrillos and a few Spartan soldiers.

DOCTOR
(cheerily) “Nice place you have here! Quite fancy! And you did all the decorating? Surely a god can decorate his own quarters. He is a god after all. He should be able to do anything at the power of his fingertips.”

KYRILLOS
“Silence, Doctor. You haven’t been allowed to speak yet.”

DOCTOR
“I haven’t even started yet.”

The two Cyclopses – Arges and Brontes – roar and grunt nearby.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Oh. You’ve come to join the party too, have you, Cyclopses?”

KYRILLOS
“They are storm gods of Zeus, Doctor! We honour their presence.”

DOCTOR
“They were stolen from Zeus by the being you worship called Krios.”

At that moment, King Croesus enters as he’s escorted into the room by more Spartans.

KYRILLOS
(taunts) “Well, well, well. His majesty King Croesus doesn’t seem to be at his best, does he?”

DOCTOR
(calls) “Your majesty, King Croesus! Are you alright?”

KING CROESUS
(entranced) “I serve the great Krios. He is my lord and master!”

DOCTOR
(shout out loud) “Enough, Krios! Whatever you’ve done to the king, leave him alone!”

With a flash of light, Krios the Chronovore appears before the Doctor. As Krios flaps his wings in the air, the Spartans bow down to him.

KRIOS
“Croesus serves me, Doctor! I expect you to do the same.”

KYRILLOS
(chants) “All hail, Krios!”

SPARTANS
(chant) “All hail, Krios! All hail, Krios! All hail, Krios…”

As Kyrillos and the Spartans chant away , the Doctor continues to confront Krios.

DOCTOR
“You’re no god, Krios. You’re a time-eater! A carnivore of people’s lives! You devour one city, Krios, you shall suffer for your actions.”

KRIOS
“You dare to threaten me, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“No! Just to scare you. To put you off balance. What I offer you is a warning. A warning to prevent you from causing any unnecessary damage.”

KRIOS
“I have the creatures of this kingdom at my command, Doctor. You’ve seen some of them already. The centaurs, the Cyclopses, the Kraken and Medusa of course. Very soon, you’ll be seeing the minotaurs and the satyrs…”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “No. Those beings of yours are projections derived from your own power. Your own time energy. The monsters you’ve summoned into being were initiated by time-sensitive particles. I’ve seen it all before.”

KRIOS
“Have a care, Doctor. It’s not wise for you to defy me.”

DOCTOR
“Oh dear. Have I struck a cord somewhere?”

SCENE #37 – EXT – TEMPLE, CENTRAL CITY – DAY, EVENING
Back outside, Nyssa and Billy take Ligiea with them as they arrive at the exterior of the Spartan temple. They look up to see the towering building before them.

BILLY
“Here’s the temple, Nyssa. This shrine of Krios must be inside or underground.”

NYSSA
(to Ligiea) “You know where this shrine is, don’t you, Ligiea? You’d better take us inside to see it at once.”

LIGIEA
“Your boy’s clever enough! Why doesn’t he lead us inside?”

NYSSA
“Like Billy says. Any tricks and we’ll have to deal with you. Billy’s still got his sword behind your back, remember?”

Billy emphasises this point by sticking the sword into Ligeia’s back again, causing her to wince slightly.

LIGIEA
(sighs) “Very well. Have it your own way. Come. Follow me.”

With that, Ligiea leads them inside the Spartan temple.

BILLY
(whispers) “I hate to break it to you, Nyssa dear. But I think you’re getting violent tendencies the same as me.”

NYSSA
(whispers) “I blame your influence over me, Billy sweetheart.”

SCENE #38 – INT – KRIOS’ SHRINE, SPARTAN TEMPLE – DAY, EVENING
Back inside the temple at Krios’ shrine…

KRIOS
“I obtained my latest powers through one thing and one thing only.” (Pause) “This!”

In his hand, Krios reveals the second coin of Deno to the Doctor.

DOCTOR
“Ah! I wondered when we might be seeing that.”

KRIOS
“The coin of lightning! The coin that gains its power from Zeus himself. The coin that gives me power…and power to the storm gods!”

DOCTOR
“You know what the coin’s true nature is, don’t you?”

KRIOS
“Indeed I do. I have seen throughout space and time to know what the coin is.”

DOCTOR
“Then you know how dangerous it is to be used by the wrong hands. Give to me and I shall take the coin back to where it came from. I shall destroy it forever. There will be peace in the universe for a little while at least.”

KRIOS
“But I don’t wish for the coin to be destroyed! I wish to use my new-found powers as well as the powers of the storm gods to strike back at Zeus! With my brother Kronos and all those sent down into Tartarus, we shall conquer Olympos and all of time and space itself. We shall become invincible!”

DOCTOR
(protests) “You can’t do this, Krios! Not with me to stand in your way.”

KRIOS
(mocks) “You?! A puny man?! Against the wrath of the gods?!”

DOCTOR
“I told you before! You’re not a god, Krios. You’re just a whiff of bad science who can think of nothing else but chaos and destruction.”

KRIOS
“There is no other way to live. My strength is connected to the coin! I will use it to destroy even you, Doctor!”

At that moment, Krios turns into a terrifying monster. He shrieks and howls whilst flapping his wings in the air. He fires a lightning bolt at the Doctor. The Time Lord falls to the floor in pain.

DOCTOR
(groans; struggles; in pain) “You’re…you’re using the coin against me!”

Krios strikes again. The Doctor cries out in more pain whilst on the floor.

KRIOS
“You don’t know what it means to defy a god! With the coin of lightning, I shall strike you down within seconds!”

Krios fires a few more shots at the Doctor. The Time Lord groans and gasps for breath whilst it escapes him. The Spartans cheer to see this torture happening.

KYRILLOS
(cheers) “Yes! Go on, get him, Krio! Let us see some blood spilt!”

KRIOS
(to Cyclopses) “Join me, Arges and Brontes! Join me as we destroy those who defy against us! Join me to destroy the Doctor!”

Grunting and roaring, the Cyclopses join Krios as they continue to fire lightning bolts at the Doctor whilst he’s on the floor. The Doctor weakens further whilst he’s being hit.

SCENE #39 – EXT – OUTSIDE KRIOS’ SHRINE, SPARTAN TEMPLE – DAY, EVENING
Outside Krios’ shrine, Nyssa and Billy arrive with Ligiea leading them. They hear the Doctor’s screams close by.

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “That’s the Doctor screaming! I’m sure of it!”

BILLY
“He must be in trouble! Come on!”

With that, Nyssa and Billy have Ligiea lead them to the door of Krios’ shrine.

NYSSA
“This door leads into Krios’ shrine, doesn’t it?”

LIGIEA
(scoffs) “Obviously.”

BILLY
“We have to get in there.”

NYSSA
“Wait, Billy. We don’t know what’s going on behind those doors. If we interfere with anything, the Doctor could come to harm.”

BILLY
“And for all we know, the Doctor could be dead. We have to get in there and rescue him!”

NYSSA
“I know, I know. I’m just trying to think of the best way to handle this.”

Just then, they’re interrupted by a giant Cyclops – Steropes – who appears behind them, grunting and roaring.

BILLY
(anxiously) “Nyssa, I think we’ve got big problems.”

NYSSA
“Yes. Where did he come from? He’s huge!”

LIGIEA
“Obviously he’s after you two! And what a meal you two will make!”

Ligiea manages to open and close the door to get inside Krios’ shrine before Nyssa and Billy can stop her.

BILLY
(cries) “No, wait!” (groans; to Nyssa) “Aww, Nyssa, she’s gone in! That Spartan woman’s got into that room under our skin!”

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “Be careful, Billy! Watch out for this monster!”

Nyssa and Billy look up to see Steropes the Cyclops getting closer to them.

BILLY
“That woman Ligiea will warn whoever’s in there and keeping the Doctor prisoner about us! We must stop her!”

NYSSA
“Billy, don’t!”

As Billy tries to open the door and chase after Ligiea in the room, he doesn’t get far as he’s struck with lightning on the back by Steropes the Cyclops. Billy gasps in pain before he falls to the floor.

NYSSA
“Billy, no! Oh Billy, no!”

Nyssa kneels beside Billy, cradling him in her arms whilst he’s knocked out unconscious. Steropes the Cyclops bellows with laughter as he looks down upon Nyssa with Billy. Nyssa looks up at Steropes.

NYSSA
“Are you going to do the same to me as you did to Billy? Are you going to strike me down with a bolt of lightning?”

Steropes grunts as he points with his finger.

NYSSA
(confused) “In there? You want me to go into the shrine room. That’s where we were heading in the first place.”

Steropes grunts again, pointing at Billy.

NYSSA
“You want me to carry Billy inside?”

Steropes grunts affirmatively.

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “Alright, I’ll do my best.”

With that, Nyssa groans as she begins to lift Billy up from the floor.

NYSSA
(through gritted teeth) “Come on, Billy! Help me to help you up from the floor!”

Billy groans as he’s being lifted up from the floor by his girlfriend to his feet.

BILLY
(groans) “My back! Oww, my back! That was some blast of lightning that one-eyed monster thrust upon me.”

NYSSA
“Next time, Billy, I’m going to see to it that you cut down on your food. You’ve eaten too much lately.”

Steropes the Cyclops grunts again, more persistently this time.

NYSSA
“Alright, alright. We’re going in now. You don’t have to be so impatient.”

Nyssa carries Billy as they’re about to go inside the shrine room of Krios. Billy leans on Nyssa as they enter the shrine room. Meanwhile, the Doctor’s screams have died down inside.

SCENE #40 – INT – KRIOS’ SHRINE, SPARTAN TEMPLE – DAY, EVENING
Inside the shrine room, Ligiea has just interrupted Krios and the Cyclops’ attempts to torture the Doctor. They as well as Kyrillos are very angry with her.

KYRILLOS
(angrily) “Wife, why did you have to interrupt us like that?! Just when Krios was on the verge of extinguishing the Doctor’s life-force!”

LIGIEA
“I had to come in, Kyrillos. The Doctor’s friends – the boy and the girl. They brought me here against my will. I had to warn you…”

KRIOS
(interjects) “Is this all you came to say?! In my great moment of triumph?!”

LIGIEA
“The boy and the girl are outside, your holiness! They’re tackling Steropes the Cyclops who’s preventing them gaining entry to free the Doctor.”

At that moment, Nyssa enters carrying Billy with Steropes the Cyclops taking up the rear.

LIGIEA
“Here they are just like I told you! And now they’re our prisoners since Steropes is bringing them in!”

KYRILLOS
(laughs) “Oh this is too good to be true!” (to Spartans) “Soldiers! Put these two youngsters with the Doctor!”

The Spartans obey as they drag Nyssa and Billy and put them with the Doctor who struggles to recover from the attacks laid upon him by Krios and the Cyclopses – Arges and Brontes. Nyssa and Billy speak quietly to the Doctor.

NYSSA
(concerned) “Doctor, you look worse for wear. Are you alright?”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “I’ll be fine, Nyssa, don’t worry. I just need to time to regain my strength and recover my breath.”

BILLY
“You’ve got more scorch marks on your chest from when we last saw you, Doctor. Outside the temple that is when we were trying to get in. Did Krios do that to you?”

DOCTOR
“And his storm gods, yes. They’re able to generate electrical power using time-sensitive particles from that coin Krios is holding.”

NYSSA
(astonished; realises) “The coin! That must be the second coin of Deno, correct?”

DOCTOR
“We need to find a way to recover the coin without getting zapped by Krios and the Cyclopses’ electricity.”

BILLY
“We must use something to weaken them then.”

DOCTOR
“You can’t weaken electricity, Billy. It’s a form of energy. It’s part of you.”

NYSSA
(thinks) “Weakness.” (gradually; realises) “Yes, weakness! Short-circuit! Billy, you’ve given me an inspiration!”

BILLY
(surprised) “Really? How have I managed that?”

NYSSA
“That sword of yours. The blade’s metal. It conducts electrical power which can short-circuit anyone who wears metal.”

BILLY
“But the Cyclopses aren’t wearing metal. Nor is Krios for that matter.”

NYSSA
“The Spartans are though. They’re wearing armour of sorts. If we bounce off an electrical discharge from the Cyclopses to the Spartan soldiers…”

DOCTOR
(finishes) “…we might be able to achieve the distraction we need by reflecting the electricity back at Krios and the Spartans.”

NYSSA
“Yes. Hopefully the lightning will bounce off the Spartans’ armour rather than kill them.”

Just then, they’re interrupted by Kyrillos.

KYRILLOS
“Silence, you three! There’s no way you can escape us! So don’t bother trying. You’re finished, the three of you! Finished!”

Kyrillos soon walks away from them before the Doctor speaks to Nyssa and Billy again.

DOCTOR
(whispers) “We’ll have to get his majesty King Croesus out of the way first.” (clears throat; calls) “Krios? If me and my friends are about to die, can I make one last request?”

KRIOS
“And what is that, Doctor? Make it a quick request!”

DOCTOR
“Really? In that case, let his majesty King Croesus go! Set him free! He’s of no use to you now.”

KRIOS
(considers) “Very well.” (to King Croesus) “King Croesus of Lydia. You are now free from my service!”

With that, King Croesus breaks out of his trance and regains his senses.

KING CROESUS
(groans; disorientated) “Oh! Where am I?” (realises) “Doctor? What is this…?”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Get down, your majesty! Get down!!!”

Instantly, King Croesus gets down on his hands and knees.

KRIOS
(triumphantly) “And now, Doctor! Time for you and your friends to die!” (to Cyclopses) “Cyclopses, kill them!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Billy, quick! Before anything else happens…”

DOCTOR
(finishes) “Raise your sword up into the air! Do it now, Billy!”

BILLY
“Oh right, yes! Here we go! Sword up in the air!”

With that, Billy raises his sword up into the air, just as Krios and the Cyclopses shoot lightning bolts from their fingertips. Billy holds onto his sword with both hands, struggling to maintain a grip whilst lightning is fired upon it.

BILLY
“I don’t understand. How come I’m not electrified?”

NYSSA
“The hilt of your sword is encased in leather. That’s a good protective insulator against electricity.”

DOCTOR
“Now Billy! Strike your sword at the Spartans! Aim for their armour!”

BILLY
“Are you sure this won’t kill them, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Positive! Do it now, Billy! Now!”

With that, Billy aims his sword at the Spartans.

KYRILLOS
(shocked) “What?! NO!!!”

In an instant, the electricity hits the Spartans from Billy’s sword. They get shocked with electricity for a bit which shoots back at Krios and the Cyclopses.

DOCTOR
“There! That should shock the Spartans, Krios and the Cyclopses for a few minutes long enough for our distraction to work.”

NYSSA
(realises) “Doctor, look! Krios has dropped the coin!”

This is true as Krios drops the coin of lightning to the ground.

KRIOS
(bellows) “What have you done, Doctor?!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Quick, Doctor! Get the coin now!”

Without hesitation, the Doctor runs forward and snatches the coin up from the ground before Krios can get it.

DOCTOR
(realises; quietly; to himself) “Ah! I’ll also pick this up before we leave.”

The Doctor picks something else up from the ground without anyone looking.

KRIOS
(bellows) “Answer me, Doctor! What have you done?!”

DOCTOR
“Oh yes! Sorry, Krios. It’s simple really. My friends and I are leaving! And we’re taking your precious coin with us!”

KRIOS
(bellows) “You can’t have that! The coin is mine! It belongs to me! Give it back, I say! Give it back!”

DOCTOR
“I’m afraid it’s not yours anymore, Krios. We’ll just be on our way if it’s all the same to you; and we’ll also take his majesty King Croesus with us!”

KRIOS
“Oh no you don’t!”

DOCTOR
“I wouldn’t strike us down if I were you, Krios. The electrical field you, the Spartans and the Cyclopses are in will expel you indefinitely no doubt. I assume you wouldn’t want to risk that.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Come, Nyssa and Billy! Let’s go! And bring his majesty King Croesus with us!”

Krios attempts to strike lightning again at the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy who bring King Croesus along with them. The electricity intensifies however, causing him, the Spartans and the Cyclopses to be electrified even more. Nyssa, Billy, the Doctor and King Croesus are protected whilst all of this occurs.

NYSSA
“What about us, Doctor? Are we still protected within the electrical field?”

DOCTOR
“We’re not wearing anything metal, are we? Besides, the lightning reflects off the Spartans’ armour against whoever’s striking it. In this case, it’s Krios and the Spartans. Now come on, let’s go! Out into the city again!”

BILLY
“You have the coin, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes I have, Billy. And as a safety measure, I’ve wrapped it up nicely in this towel I’ve got with me in my toga.”

KING CROESUS
“What about the other coins, Doctor? My stolen coins! You said you would…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “The other coins I couldn’t find; your majesty. Besides, they’ll be too dangerous to keep. Come on, let’s be on our way! Out we go!”

With that, the Doctor leads Nyssa, Billy and King Croesus out of the shrine room and out of the Spartan temple in order to escape. Pretty soon, the electrical field ceases as Krios, the Spartans and the Cyclopses manage to break out of it and have a few moments to recover.

KRIOS
(angrily) “My coin! They’ve stolen my coin! Get up, you Spartans! Get up, you Cyclopses! We must recover the coin!”

KYRILLOS
(protests) “Most of our soldiers are injured, your greatness. The Doctor and his friends could have been killed!”

LIGIEA
“And as that coin they were determined to get…”

KRIOS
(interrupts) “Don’t bother me with your petty concerns, Spartans! You are supposed to be the strongest warriors!” (calls) “Spartans and Cyclopses, go out and chase the Doctor; his companions and the king! They must be found and stopped! Take the centaurs with you! None of my enemies must be allowed to unveil the secret of my power!”

KYRILLOS
“As you command, great Krios! We Spartans are true warriors!”

LIGIEA
“We are also true leaders! My husband shall lead the Cyclopses and the centaurs!”

KYRILLOS
“Come, wife! Let’s go and obey the will of Krios now!”

With that, Kyrillos and Ligiea leave the shrine room to pursue the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and King Croseus. The Cyclopses follow on behind them. Krios is left alone in the temple.

KRIOS
(sulks) “The Doctor must be stopped! I can’t be sent back into the wilderness by him! I won’t return to the empty void! The coin must be brought back!”

SCENE #41 – EXT – MARKET STREET, CENTRAL CITY – NIGHT
A short while later in the city of Sparta at night-time; the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and King Croesus run out into a market street. They’ve been pursued by Spartans, Cyclopses and centaurs. They stop to hide in a street corner to avoid being detected.

BILLY
(pants) “I think we’ve lost them, Doctor. I can’t hear any galloping hooves of centaurs nearby.”

NYSSA
“Nor any stomping footsteps of Cyclopses. Or trampling footsteps of Spartan warriors.”

DOCTOR
“Nevertheless, I’d prefer we located Erasmos where I left him as soon as possible before we can get out of this city.”

KING CROESUS
(grumbles) “You had to leave my coins behind, didn’t you, Doctor? Just when you had the chance to pick up my remaining coins, you only picked up one coin instead.”

DOCTOR
“It was your life or your wealth, your majesty. Besides, the coin of lightning was more important than the rest of them as far as I’m concerned.”

KING CROESUS
“My wealth means a lot to me! I must have my money! I want my money back! My money!”

BILLY
“Why, you greedy so and so…”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Can we discuss this another time?”

Just then, shouts as well as galloping footsteps and stomping, trampling footsteps echo nearby.

KING CROESUS
(realises) “Footsteps? Stomping and trampling!”

BILLY
(realises) “And galloping hooves!”

NYSSA
“The Spartans, Cyclopses and centaurs! They’re coming this way!”

DOCTOR
“Quick! Inside that corner in the streetway immediately!”

With that, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and King Croesus get inside the streetway corner, just before the centaurs gallop down the street as well as the Spartans and the Cyclopses running by. Everyone becomes terrified once they see the centaurs, Spartans and Cyclopses passing by. The centaurs, Spartans and Cyclopses ignore the screaming people. Once their pursuers have past by, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and King Croesus soon come out of their hiding places, breathing sighs of relief.

NYSSA
(relieved) “Thank goodness they’ve gone.” (to Doctor) “Where did you say left Erasmos, Doctor? In an alley?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Close to the city gates of Sparta. It shouldn’t be far. It’s up north where the centaurs, Spartans and Cyclopses were heading.”

BILLY
“But if we head off down there, won’t we meet any of those centaurs, Spartans and Cyclopses that will likely catch us?”

NYSSA
“Not if we dodge behind street corners, alleyways and such.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa, but I take Billy’s point. We could easily be seen by the Cyclopses from above, let alone the centaurs and the Spartans. We need to be inconspicuous as possible in order to avoid being seen by anyone.”

KING CROESUS
(realises) “Ah! There’s a fine clothes stall up ahead! Those clothes look rich for a king. I wouldn’t mind having those.”

NYSSA
“Doctor! Those cloaks and hoods at that clothes stall are quite big.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa, so I see.”

NYSSA
“They’d be perfect enough to keep our heads well covered, wouldn’t you say?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa, I would say.”

Eventually, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and King Croesus make their way over to the clothes stall in order to purchase some garments.

SCENE #42 – EXT – ALLEYWAY, MARKET STREET – NIGHT
Later on; the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and King Croesus are in their new overlong clothes to disguse themselves. They enter the alleyway where the Doctor left Erasmos.

NYSSA
“This is the place, isn’t it, Doctor? The alleyway where you left Erasmos?”

DOCTOR
“Yes it is. But there’s no sign of him, Nyssa. I’m sure I left him here.”

NYSSA
“Well, he’s not here now, Doctor.”

BILLY
(groans) “Oh that’s just great. Where could he have gone then?”

KING CROESUS
“At least the Spartans and those other horrible monsters didn’t spot us, did they? Not with these long splendid clothes we are wearing. Thank you for purchasing them, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(ignores King Croseus) “He was here, Erasmos was. Look! There are wine barrels turned over. Some of them must be empty. He must have drunk the whole lot of wine available to him.”

NYSSA
“You said he was in a critical state, Doctor. He could have gone to a hospital, couldn’t he?”

DOCTOR
“He could, yes. Unless he was captured by Spartans who found him lying about on the ground and they considered him weak to be left on a mountain somewhere.”

NYSSA
“Don’t say that, Doctor. Let’s not be defeatist.”

At that moment, Erasmos appears behind them.

ERASMOS
“Doctor! Nyssa; Billy; your majesty! Thank goodness you’re all here!”

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Erasmos! Thank goodness you’re safe! Where have you been?!”

ERASMOS
“I did as you said, Doctor. I went to a Spartan hospital.”

BILLY
“They didn’t suspect you for being an Athenian then.”

ERASMOS
“No! I bluffed my way through them! I told them I needed to be cleansed before going out into battle. That did the trick. And nice Spartan baths they have too. Not as good as in Athens though.”

NYSSA
“We should probably get a move on, Doctor.”

BILLY
“Yeah. Let’s get out of here before…”

Just then, the Cyclopses appear. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, King Croseus and Erasmos are shocked to see them whilst the Cyclopses laugh and grunt, about to use their storm god powers.

KING CROESUS
(shocked) “The Cyclopses! They’ve found us!”

NYSSA
“Doctor! They’re going to strike us down with lightning!”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Stand back! Stand back, all of you!”

Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos do as the Doctor says as they stand back, whilst the Cyclopses roar before they’re about to strike lightning bolts upon them.

DOCTOR
“Take this, chaps!”

With that, the Doctor holds up the Deno coin of lightning at them. The Cyclopses strike, but their lightning bolts bounce off the coin. The Cyclopses get hit by the bolts of lightning as they roar out loud in pain.

DOCTOR
(cries) “Now! I hold you under my power! I am the bearer of this coin! I command you three Cyclopses to return to where you came from. Back into the void! Return to the void at once! Go! Go now! I command it!”

The Cyclopses grunt and groan before they weaken and vanish into thin air.

DOCTOR
“That’s right! Off you go now! You don’t belong here! Back to whence you came!”

With that, the Cyclopses are gone. Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos are astonished by what the Doctor has done.

BILLY
(astonished) “What did you just do, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“Sent them back to whence they came from, of course. Into the void, like I said.”

KING CROESUS
“But they were creatures of the gods. They cannot be destroyed!”

DOCTOR
“Those creatures weren’t real, your majesty. They were created by Krios. And he’s no more a god than a tin of rice pudding. Besides, the Cyclopses were convinced that I had power over them. Just be thankful that the trick worked in our favour.”

ERASMOS
“You really are full of god-like powers, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Less of the god thing with me, Erasmos.” (Pause) “Shall we move on, everyone?”

NYSSA
“Are the city gates down this way, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes they are, Nyssa. Come on. Out we go this way.”

With that, the Doctor leads the way as he, Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos head for the city gates.

SCENE #43 – INT – KRIOS’ SHRINE, SPARTAN TEMPLE – NIGHT
Meanwhile in Krios’ shrine in the Spartan temple, Krios groans in pain as he realises his power is weakening.

KRIOS
(in pain) “No! This can’t be!” (Pause) “I won’t be sent back! I will not!” (calls) “My Spartan warriors; my centaurs, hear me! The storm gods of Zeus have been sent back! They have been defeated by the Doctor!”

Krios groans in more pain as he slumps to the floor, feeling exhausted.

KRIOS
(in pain) “The Doctor! He and his friends are escaping the Spartan city. Confront him at the city gates! Then destroy him! Destroy him, I say!”

SCENE #44 – EXT – CITY GATES, ENTRANCE TO SPARTA – NIGHT
At the city gates of Sparta, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, Erasmos and King Croesus arrive as they’re about to head out into the night. A lightning storm occurs nearby.

KING CROESUS
(relieved) “We’ve made it! Thank the gods we made it! We’re escaping the city!”

ERASMOS
(suspiciously) “And not a Spartan soul to confront us!” (Pause) “Why is there a lightning storm nearby? Is Krios causing that or is it that coin of power you hold, Doctor?”

BILLY
(realises) “Doctor; Nyssa! There are horses and a wagon on our right! We can take the horses and wagon to get back to Athens!”

NYSSA
“Billy’s right, Doctor! We should take those horses and their wagon!”

DOCTOR
“Come on then! Let’s get to them before…”

Just then, the Spartans led by Kyrillos and Ligiea as well as the centaurs block the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos’ path.

KYRILLOS
(mockingly) “Going somewhere, Doctor?”

LIGIEA
“You should think twice before you dodge the Spartans and the centaurs!”

NYSSA
(groans) “Oh no! Not them again!”

BILLY
“I thought we’d seen the last of these goons!”

KING CROESUS
“Doctor? Can’t you use your powers again to defeat our opponents?”

DOCTOR
“Just give a minute, your majesty!”

ERASMOS
“A minute?! I don’t think we’ve got a second left!”

The Spartans and the centaurs advance with swords in hand towards the Doctor and his company.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Hold it; hold it! Before you do anything to us, I have one thing to say!”

KYRILLOS
(sighs) “Make it quick, Doctor! We haven’t got all day!”

LIGIEA
“It’s night time, Kyrillos.”

KYRILLOS
“Alright then, we haven’t got all night!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you!” (to centaurs) “Centaurs, it is true you are noble creatures of honour, aren’t you?”

CENTAUR LEADER
“Of course it is.”

DOCTOR
“So I think it’s best you just kill us instead. Not the Spartans.”

NYSSA
(shocked) “Doctor, what are you doing?”

KYRILLOS
(shocked) “What?! Wait, centaurs, no!”

CENTAUR LEADER
(calls) “Centaurs; draw your swords!”

The centaurs draw their swords at their leader’s command.

KYRILLOS
(cries) “Centaurs, stop! I object to this!”

CENTAUR LEADER
(cries) “Centaurs, charge!”

With that, the centaur charge forwards towards the Doctor and company with their swords held up high. Meanwhile, the Doctor takes out the coin of lightning and raises it up into the air.

DOCTOR
(cries) “Centaurs! Back to whence you came from! Back to the void, I say!”

Very soon, the centaurs stop galloping as they groan and convulse in pain.

CENTAUR LEADER
(groans; in pain) “No! We can’t…we can’t reach them! My hooves…my hooves won’t move!”

CENTAUR
(groans; in pain) “What has he done to us?! The Doctor has tricked us!”

DOCTOR
(cheerily) “Bye, bye, centaurs! Nice to have met you!”

Weakening, the centaurs soon vanish into thin air. Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos watch before they cheer out loud in triumph. Kyrillos, Ligiea and the Spartans are dumbstruck with horror.

NYSSA
(cheers) “You did it, Doctor! You sent the centaurs back to whence they came from! Well done!”

BILLY
“Yes well done, Doctor! You saved our skins!”

DOCTOR
(happily) “Oh think nothing of it, Nyssa and Billy.”

KYRILLOS
(dumbstruck) “This is not how it should be! Krios should have won for us!”

LIGIEA
(horrified) “He is no god, Kyrillos! The Doctor is a god, not Krios!”

At that, the Doctor aims the coin of lightning at Kyrillos, Ligiea and the Spartans.

DOCTOR
“Now, who wants to be next? You Spartan chaps perhaps?”

LIGIEA
(cries) “Spartans! Retreat! Flee for your lives!”

KYRILLOS
“I’m better off fighting Persians instead Flee, everyone! Flee! FLEE!!!”

The Spartans led by Kyrillos and Ligiea flee for their lives as they retreat back into the city of Sparta. The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos are amused whilst watching the Spartans flee for their lives.

KING CROESUS
(laughs) “Call themselves warriors, do they?! They’re nothing more than scaredy cats!”

DOCTOR
(pleased) “I must admit, I really enjoyed that. Teasing and scaring the Spartans off like that with this coin of lightning.” (Pause) “Now let’s see to those horses and their wagon, shall we?”

SCENE #45 – INT – KRIOS’ SHRINE, SPARTAN TEMPLE – NIGHT
Back in his shrine, Krios becomes enraged, realising that the Doctor has sent the centaurs back into the void.

KRIOS
(enraged) “NO!!! This cannot be correct! It mustn’t be! I am to be the victor! And those Spartan warriors ran off like cowards!” (Pause) “You may have defeated my Cyclopses and centaurs, Doctor, but think twice before you confront me!”

With that, an enraged Krios flaps his wings and vanishes into a flash of light.

SCENE #46 – EXT – CITY GATES, ENTRANCE TO SPARTA – NIGHT
Back with the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, King Croesus and Erasmos, they’re on the wagon with the horses pulling them out of the city of Sparta. A lightning storm occurs above their heads as they journey on.

KING CROESUS
(satisfied) “We’ll be a fair distance away from the city of Sparta soon enough!”

Just then, Krios appears before them in a flash of light, flapping his wings and screaming with rage. The wagons and horses stop as soon as the Doctor and company see Krios.

KING CROESUS
(shocked) “What?! Oh no! Krios is back for us!”

ERASMOS
“I think you may have spoken too soon, your majesty!”

KRIOS
(bellows) “You cannot escape from me, Doctor!!! I, Krios, shall destroy you!!!”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Oh hello, Krios! I wondered when you’d get here!”

KRIOS
“Give me the coin, Doctor! That coin of power belongs to me!”

DOCTOR
“Sorry. I’ve got to take it away to get it clean. I’m sure you won’t miss it.”

KRIOS
“If you defy me once more, Doctor, I shall crush you down with what remains of my power and turn you into cinders! Into ashes! Don’t think that coin will protect you or help you to send me back into the void, because it won’t.”

DOCTOR
“Oh I know that, Krios. But I do know something that will help me in sending you back into the void.”

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “Doctor, do be careful.”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Trust me, Nyssa. I know what I’m doing.”

KRIOS
(scorns) “And pray do tell me what will help you to send me back into the void, Doctor. Go on! I’m fascinated already!”

DOCTOR
“Oh…something like this! All good Chronovores should have one like it.”

With that, the Doctor takes out a strangely designed crystal and holds it up high at Krios. Krios becomes afraid of this and backs away.

ERASMOS
(amazed) “Did you see that? Did you see Krios’ reaction on his face?”

KING CROESUS
“I did indeed, yes! Krios is afraid!”

BILLY
(intrigued) “That’s a crystal the Doctor’s holding, isn’t it, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes it is, Billy. And it’s shaped like a trident.”

KRIOS
(angrily) “Where did you get that, Doctor?! Answer me! ANSWER ME, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?!!”

DOCTOR
“Well, as well as stealing the coin of lightning, I spotted this crystal of yours lying about in your shrine. Whilst you were distracted and the Spartans were being electrified, I nicked the crystal without anyone looking as well as collecting the coin!”

KRIOS
(pleads) “You can’t do this, Doctor! Don’t do it! Don’t do anything to me!”

DOCTOR
(continues) “And with the coin and the crystal in my hands, I can send you back into the void without a problem!”

KRIOS
(bellows) “You cannot do this, Doctor! I forbid it! Don’t do this!”

DOCTOR
(cheerily) “Goodbye, Krios! Goodbye forever!”

KRIOS
(shouts) “No! NO!!! CEASE THIS AT ONCE!!!!!”

DOCTOR
(commands) “Go back, Krios! Return to the void! Back into eternity!”

KRIOS
(shrieks) “STOP! I IMPLORE YOU! PLEASE, DOCTOR!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

With that, Krios shrieks in pain as the Doctor uses the Deno coin of lightning to send him back into his Chronovore crystal. Flapping his wings, Krios gets smaller and smaller, howling away as he vanishes into the crystal. The lightning storm soon stops and all becomes silent.

KING CROESUS
(astonished) “You defeated him, Doctor! You defeated Krios! Just by scaring with that crystal of yours?”

ERASMOS
“He’s inside that crystal now, isn’t he?”

NYSSA
“Safely tucked away back into the realm of eternity. Isn’t that right, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Right indeed, Nyssa. And with the coin of power I have in my hand, I used Krios’ own powers of electricity against him.”

BILLY
(impressed) “That’s very clever, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(gratified) “Isn’t it?” (Pause) “Shall we head back home now? We have Athens and your family waiting for us, Erasmos.”

With that, the Doctor and his friends continue their journey on their horses and wagon as they leave Sparta and head back for Athens.

SCENE #47 – INT – LOUNGE, GALENOS’ HOUSE – DAY, EVENING
A day or so later, back in Galenos’ house in Athens, a party takes place and everyone is celebrating. Erasmos tells his mum, his dad and his sister about the adventures he’s had in Sparta.

ERASMOS
“And then the Doctor sent Krios back into that crystal of his and defeated him. We all travelled home safely on the horses and wagon we acquired to get back here.”

EUMEILA
“Oh my dear brother! You must have been very brave!”

SOPHIA
(disapprovingly) “You should have thought better, son, than to go out into that Spartan city with the Doctor and his friends. You could have got killed by those Spartan barbarians.”

GALENOS
“Well, I’m impressed with my son’s bravery! I’m going to write all this down into a play. So that we can perform it outdoors at the Athenian court.”

ERASMOS
(groans) “Oh please, father, no! Don’t write a play about it!”

GALENOS
“I’ve got to earn my keep, son. I’m a playwright, remember?”

Just then, Nyssa, Billy and the Doctor enter.

EUMEILA
“Ah look! Here come our heroes!”

The four Athenians cheer once the time travellers are present.

BILLY
“Thank you! But there’s really no need to…”

NYSSA
(interjects) “You’ve all been very kind.”

SOPHIA
“But this party is in honour of you three! For saving Erasmos and for defeating the god Krios.”

GALENOS
“Surely you three can stay for that. Our slaves can wait on you tonight with good food and wine.,.”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “It’s very kind of you, but I’m afraid my friends and I must be going.”

ERASMOS
(shocked) “What?! You’re leaving, Doctor? In that blue box of yours?”

DOCTOR
“I’m afraid so.” (cheerfully) “Goodbye, everyone. Thank you all for your hospitality.”

EUMEILA
“But where will you be going? Have you far to travel?”

NYSSA
“Not really in answer to both your questions. But there’s a quest of ours that we need to complete. We mustn’t linger here for too long.”

GALENOS
“Do you really travel in that blue box of yours, Doctor? Does it really come from stars or the heavens?”

BILLY
(cheekily) “Certainly from the stars, now you come to mention it.”

DOCTOR
“Come on, Nyssa and Billy. It’s time we set off.”

With that, the Doctor turns the key inside the TARDIS lock and opens the door. He lets his two friends Nyssa and Billy inside.

DOCTOR
(cheerily) “Goodbye all!”

NYSSA
“Yes, goodbye to you all! And take care!”

BILLY
“Yes, bye, bye!”

The Doctor soon steps inside the TARDIS with Nyssa and Billy as they close the doors behind them. Once they’re inside the TARDIS, the blue box begins to dematerialise, whooshing and groaning it goes. Galenos and his family are astonished once they see this. Very soon, the TARDIS is gone and there’s a moment of silence in the lounge of Galenos’ house.

SOPHIA
(astonished) “Well, what a strange way to travel!”

GALENOS
“They really must be gods to travel in a machine such as that.”

At that moment, King Croesus enters and is very angry.

KING CROESUS
(angrily) “Where is he?! Where is the Doctor?! I want him!”

EUMEILA
(puzzled) “Why, your majesty? What troubles you?”

KING CROESUS
“He’s taken my coin! The Doctor has taken the coin of lightning! I want it! I’m the wealthiest man in the world! It must be mine! It must!”

ERASMOS
“Sorry, your majesty, but the Doctor and his friends have gone. They left in that strange blue cabinet of theirs.”

GALENOS
“Indeed. They didn’t even stay to have a portion of meat.”

SOPHIA
“Which my slaves and I have prepared so well. Do you wish for meat, your majesty?”

King Croesus stamps his foot angrily.

KING CROESUS
(angrily) “This is insufferable! I, the King, won’t be able to show the wonders of my new powers to any such man. I won’t be able to show it to Solon or to Aesop. They’ll just consider me the same old King Croesus. I’ll have to rethink my ideas of wealth. They need to be impressed.”

With that, King Croesus leaves the room. Galenos and his family soon lounge about and enjoy the buffet prepared for this evening.

GALENOS
“Hmm. Well, as we relish the buffet for this evening, who wants to hear my new play?”

SCENE #48 – INT – TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
Elsewhere, journeying through the time vortex and in the TARDIS, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are in the console room. The trio lay out the two Deno coins they’ve managed to obtain so far in their quest.

NYSSA
(relieved) “I’m glad we’ve been able to obtain the second coin. So that’s two coins we’ve collected so far.”

BILLY
“The coin of stone and the coin of lightning. We’ve done a good job already, haven’t we?”

Billy touches the coin of lightning and receives an electric shock.

BILLY
“Oww! That coin of lightning is still sizzling.”

NYSSA
“Two coins down, only six more to go. You’re right, Billy. We have done a good job.”

DOCTOR
“And with the map to time, we should find our next coin easily.”

BILLY
“It’s a shame we didn’t spend much time in Greece. I was beginning to enjoy the place in a strange way.”

NYSSA
“I’m glad we managed to get away when we did. No more Spartans to chase us.”

BILLY
“Doctor, are there really such things as Greek gods and mythical creatures? Centaurs; Cyclopses and the like.”

DOCTOR
“That’s a matter of opinion, Billy. I’ve often helped Greek heroes to defeat monsters that pose as evil gods and mythological creatures.”

NYSSA
“And your assessment?”

DOCTOR
“My assessment?” (Pause) “I always have an open mind, Nyssa.” (Pause) “Let’s set off for our next destination, shall we?”

The Doctor takes out the map to time to insert into the TARDIS console.

NYSSA
“I need a rest. I think I’ll take a shower.”

BILLY
“Yeah, I need a shower too.”

With that, Nyssa and Billy happily leave together as they exit the console room. The Doctor meanwhile attends to the TARDIS controls as he inserts the map to time into the console. He then turns his attention back to the two Deno coins laid out in the console room and eyes them with interest.

DOCTOR
“I wonder where your other six friends are, you two chaps. I’m sure we’re about to find out.”

    Hello Tim.

I found ‘The Greek Horror’ to be a very enjoyable read. The chemistry that the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy shared with Erasmos and King Croesus was very well done. I liked the action in the story, especially when the group were in Sparta. I look forward to ‘The Clouds of Skyra’ after ‘Mirror of Memory’.

Regarding the opening scene of ‘The Map to Time’, maybe it’s not impossible for them to act that way. I just thought it was weird that they would do so many stupid things, nearly get themselves killed for it and then laugh about it.

I still need to finish some of my stories for the first season of ‘The Fifth Doctor by Williams Fan 92’. I have thought up all of my ideas for that as well as some for future seasons. One of those ideas as I may have mentioned is a sequel to ‘Black Orchid’. I will use ‘Mirror of Memory’, the Target audiobook and the Cranleigh Hall scene in ‘The Sands of Time as part of my research for it.

    Take care, WF92.

      Hi WF92/Xavier,

Glad you enjoyed ‘The Greek Horror’. I had a fun time writing this episode. Glad you enjoyed the chemistry between the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, Erasmos and King Croesus. I’m pleased you enjoyed the action featured in this story, especially when the heroes were in Sparta. I look forward to when you share your thoughts on ‘The Mirror of Memory’ and ‘The Clouds of Skydra’ next. I hope you’ll enjoy those stories.

To be fair, I wrote the ending of the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy’s previous unseen adventure set before ‘The Map of Time’, so there might have been more going on to cause them to laugh when they did. I admit, the opening scene does feel more new series-like compared to classic series, but I wanted to add humour at the beginning of the story before we got onto the main part of ‘The Coins of Deno’. And it was establish the chemistry between the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy as they enjoyed being in each other’s company. Maybe if I revisit the opening scene in ‘The Map to Time’, perhaps I would do things differently. Them laughing about escaping and cheating death was probably hysterical laughter more than anything.

Hope all is going well for you and your blog. I look forward to when it’s set up so I can read your stories. Just take your time with it and try not to rush things as it’s better to feel relaxed when doing your blog rather than be under pressure. I look forward to your sequel to ‘Black Orchid’. I hope reading ‘The Mirror of Memory’ as well as the ‘Black Orchid’ Target novelization/audiobook and the Cranleigh Hall/Lady Ann scenes in ‘The Sands of Time will help.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
