‘The Map to Time’, Chapter 1

1. “Indian, perhaps. Possibly Arabian…”

Roll original 1982 Peter Davison opening credits

SCENE #1 – EXT – ALIEN LANDSCAPE, PLANET VOOGON V – DAY, AFTERNOON
The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are running for their lives. They’re being chased by an angry mob on the planet Voogan V in Varas space. They pant for breath as they reach for the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
(pants) “Nearly there, Nyssa; Billy! Nearly there!”

NYSSA
“We’re never going to make it, Doctor! They’re onto us!”

DOCTOR
“We will make it, Nyssa, we will! Trust me! The TARDIS is half a minute away!”

BILLY
“We should apologise! Explain that it’s all a misunderstanding…”

NYSSA
“We tried that, Billy! But they wouldn’t listen! They threw apples at us!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t dawdle, you two! Come on!”

Billy then trips. Nyssa helps him to regain his balance as the angry Voogains catch up.

NYSSA
(anxious) “Billy!”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “It’s alright! I’m not hurt. I just tripped.”

NYSSA
“Well, get your feet moving, Billy! We’ll be slaughtered if you fall over fatally!”

Eventually, the trio arrive at the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Here we are! What did I tell you? The old girl awaits us!”

NYSSA
(anxiously) “The door, Doctor! Open the door!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Oh yes, right. Sorry. Key, key, key.”

The Doctor fumbles in his coat pockets to search for his TARDIS key. He takes random things out of his pockets as he scrambles for the key.

DOCTOR
“Paperclip; apple; cricket ball; mint cake…”

BILLY
(panics) “Doctor, hurry up!”

DOCTOR
“I am hurrying, Billy! I’m going as fast as I can!”

NYSSA
(panics) “Doctor, the Voogians are nearly here!”

Angry growls echo from the Voogians as they nearly reach them. Eventually…

DOCTOR
(cries; triumphantly) “Aha! Got it! The key’s in my hand! Now for the lock!”

The Doctor fits the key into the lock and begins to turns it. The Voogians arrive as they draw out their guns.

BILLY
(panics) “Doctor, they’re drawing out their guns and aiming them at us!”

NYSSA
(panics) “Doctor, please! Open the door now!”

The Voogians charge their guns whilst aiming them at the TARDIS trio, preparing to open fire. Eventually, the TARDIS door opens inwards and the Doctor pushes in.

DOCTOR
“Quick, Nyssa; Billy! Inside!”

The Doctor pushes Nyssa and Billy into the TARDIS as they go in. Stepping inside just as the Voogians open fire, the Doctor closes the TARDIS door behind him, moments before the shots hit the door. The Voogians roar and howl out loud angrily as the TARDIS dematerialises, whooshing and groaning as it goes, disappearing into the time vortex.

SCENE #2 – INT – TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
Already at the TARDIS controls, the Doctor sighs with relief as he, Nyssa and Billy stand around the console and recover their breath.

BILLY
(pants) “Are…are we…have we escaped?”

DOCTOR
“Yes! We have escaped. We’re quite safe now.”

NYSSA
(pants) “We’re…we’re out of reach from Voogan V.”

DOCTOR
“We should be way out of Varas space now.”

A moment of silence ensues as the trio pant for breath. A few seconds later, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy start giggling before laughing out loud.

BILLY
(laughs; to Doctor) “Oh, that’s going to make my day when you accidentally tore the Macadi President’s wife’s ball gown.”

DOCTOR
(laughs) “Yes. I should have known better than to trip up the fruit cake buffet the chef had worked on so delicately. Shame really. The buffet had a nice touch to it.”

BILLY
(laughs) “It’s a shame one of us…and I don’t know who it was…accidentally knocked the boy on the head with a pole.”

NYSSA
(laughs) “You mean the President’s son? It was an accident, I assure you.”

BILLY
“Oh I believe you, darling. Honest I do.”

The trio laugh again for a bit.

DOCTOR
“And who was it that made a mockery of the band when one of the trombone players failed to get his tune right?”

BILLY
“Err…that would be me, Doctor.”

NYSSA
(ruefully) “It would, obviously.”

DOCTOR
(laughs) “Well, at least we managed to have a good party.”

BILLY
“Was that before or when we wrecked it?”

The trio laugh again whilst the Doctor sets the controls for the TARDIS.

NYSSA
(laughs) “Tinkering with the controls I see, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(laughs) “Setting course for our next destination, Nyssa.”

BILLY
(laughs) “Wait a minute, Doctor. Hadn’t we better rest first?”

Just then, a bleeping echoes from the console. This stops everyone’s laughter as the Doctor checks it out.

NYSSA
(puzzled) “Doctor? That light flashing on the console. I hope it’s not serious.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm? Oh it’s probably nothing, Nyssa. Just a little blip the TARDIS tracker’s picked up. Shouldn’t worry about it.”

BILLY
“That doesn’t sound like you Doctor, if you forgive me for being sceptical.”

DOCTOR
(eagerly) “We’ve no time to waste. New destination, here we come!”

With that, the Doctor sets the TARDIS for their new destination.

SCENE #3 – INT – COURTROOM, LORD GANL’S PALACE – NIGHT
Meanwhile, watching the TARDIS in the time vortex on a monitor screen from far away on Arazo IV, there are two people in a courtroom – Lord Ganl and his secretary Mr. Dalgix.

DALGIX
“Just as you predicted, my lord. The time travellers have returned to the time vortex.”

LORD GANL
“We mustn’t delay. The signal’s been sent. We must divert the Doctor’s TARDIS to us at once! He is vital for our purpose!”

DALGIX
“Shall I inform the guardians to attend, my lord?”

LORD GANL
“Yes. But do it gradually. We must make sure the TARDIS lands safely before we can do anything.”

Dalgix complies as he works at his computer. Lord Ganl soon leaves the courtroom.

SCENE #4 – EXT – JUNGLE, ARAZO IV – DAY, MORNING
Some time later on the planet Arazo IV, the TARDIS has landed in a jungle-like atmosphere. Billy looks out onto a view before Nyssa exits the TARDIS to join him.

NYSSA
(cheerily) “Billy, there you are! What are you doing out here on your own?”

BILLY
“I just…wanted to take in some fresh air. See the view. Didn’t want to disturb you and the Doctor sorting out TARDIS repairs.”

NYSSA
“Well, we’ve nearly finished. Come here.”

Nyssa takes Billy’s hands as she embraces him and they kiss.

BILLY
“It’s not much to look at. The view, I mean. Here we are in a jungle of sorts. The sun’s out and it’s clear blue sky.”

NYSSA
“It is pretty here, isn’t it?”

BILLY
“Oh it’s beautiful, yes.” (Pause) “And you’re beautiful too, Nyssa dear.”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Billy, that’s really sweet.”

They embrace each other for a bit.

BILLY
“The jungle’s beautiful and you’re beautiful. But down there. Look! It appears to be some sort of desert. And there’s a rock formation up ahead.”

Billy points for Nyssa to see.

NYSSA
(intrigued) “Hmm. A kind of maze.”

BILLY
“If we were to travel in that desert and that rock maze, I’d like to think you’d keep my spirits up. You’d help me not to be downhearted. You always have a positive approach to life when things become rotten.”

NYSSA
(amused) “Same old Billy. I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s nice when you compliment on my lifestyle approach to things.”

BILLY
“I’m glad I’m able to make you laugh at times. You often laugh at my jokes. Even the bad ones.”

NYSSA
“Have you got a joke for me today then?”

BILLY
(teasingly) “I’ll let you know when I think of one. Unless you’d like me to tell you the joke about a dog who became ‘rough’ when he went “Wuff!”

NYSSA
(giggles) “You and your jokes, Billy. And for your information, the bad jokes can often be the best ones.”

BILLY
“Yes, I’m sure there’s an element of truth to that.”

Nyssa and Billy laugh together before they kiss again. They’re soon interrupted by the Doctor coming out of the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
“Ah there you are, you two! Sorry to keep you waiting. Hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

BILLY
“No, no, of course not.”

NYSSA
(teasingly) “Billy’s being his usual charming ‘silly’ self, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(ruefully) “That I can well believe.”

BILLY
(laughs) “Oy! I resent that.”

The Doctor closes the TARDIS door behind him.

NYSSA
“Have you finished with the TARDIS repairs, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Uh yes, Nyssa. I believe I have. Though I must get around to updating and redesigning the TARDIS console at some point. It really badly needs an overhaul and perhaps a new desktop theme to it.”

NYSSA
“I think the TARDIS is alright the way it is, Doctor. Why change things?”

DOCTOR
“I never like to stick to the same things, Nyssa. You should know that by now. I like to keep moving with the times. Besides, I’ve always wanted a snazzier and upbeat console desktop theme at some point in my future lives.”

BILLY
“Future lives?”

DOCTOR
“Don’t let it worry you, Billy. Come on! Let’s see what this new world we’re on is like.”

NYSSA
“You know where we are then, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Of course! The planet Arazo Four in the Arazo sector of the galaxy. Much to see and much to do!”

At that, the Doctor takes out a tracker from one of his coat pockets. He holds it in his hands with Nyssa and Billy watching him.

BILLY
“Doctor, that’s one of your tracking devices!”

DOCTOR
“Just a precaution. The TARDIS was diverted indirectly when we tried to land. We didn’t come to this planet by choice.”

NYSSA
“So, an omniscient intelligence brought us to this planet.”

DOCTOR
“That’s the thing you see, Nyssa. I’m not entirely sure.”

The trio soon begin to explore the jungle as they walk on.

SCENE #5 – INT – COURTROOM, LORD GANL’S PALACE – DAY, MORNING
In the courtroom of Lord Ganl’s palace, Mr. Dalgix watches on a monitor screen, seeing the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy’s progress through the jungle. The courtroom doors open and Lord Ganl enters.

DALGIX
“My Lord Ganl!”

LORD GANL
“Well, Mr. Dalgix! Have you good news for me?”

DALGIX
“Indeed, sir. The Doctor and his friends have arrived. They’re now treading through the jungles of the northwest continent.”

LORD GANL
“Close to where we are.”

DALGIX
“Yes, sir. About fifty-four kilometres away.”

LORD GANL
“I hope you’re keeping tabs on them.”

DALGIX
“Yes, sir. I’m monitoring on all channels. We know exactly where they’re heading.”

LORD GANL
“Good. Then time is of the essence.”

Lord Ganl then spots something on one of the monitors.

LORD GANL
“What is that, Mr. Dalgix? Are we expecting an arrival?”

Dalgix checks.

DALGIX
“It’s the Sgrans, my lord! They’ve come out of their hideouts! They’re approaching the Doctor and his friends’ positions.”

LORD GANL
“I thought I told you to keep them off our tracking systems when we were tracking the Doctor and his TARDIS.”

DALGIX
“It seems the Sgrans are cleverer than we thought.”

LORD GANL
“Cleverer?! The Sgrans?! I find that hard to believe.”

DALGIX
“The guardians are in close proximity. Shall I send for them?”

LORD GARL
“Yes, yes, Dalgix of course. Send out your guardians. I expect them to bring the Doctor and company within the hour.”

DALGIX
“Yes sir. Very good, sir.”

LORD GANL
“I’ll be taking my morning bath. Let me know when the Doctor arrives.”

With that, Lord Ganl heads out and leaves the courtroom. Mr. Dalgix is left on his own again, as he’s about to communicate with the guardians.

SCENE #6 – EXT – EAVES OF MATALIA, JUNGLE – DAY, MORNING
Back in the jungle, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy have been exploring for quite some time.

BILLY
“So, Doctor. What’s so special about this planet then?”

DOCTOR
“Arazo Four is home to one of the most ancient civilisations of the Arazo Empire, Billy. Its history has been legendary.”

NYSSA
“It seems that every time we visit a planet, it has to belong to an ancient civilisation; an empire or a kingdom.”

BILLY
“What sort of empire would this be like then? Russian; German; British – not that I’m wishing for it to be like them you understand.”

DOCTOR
“Indian perhaps. Possibly Arabian, it’s hard to tell.”

BILLY
(intrigued) “Oh. Does it have like huge domed palaces like they have in the ‘Arabian Nights’ tales I’ve read?”

NYSSA
“The Doctor and I have been to Arabia once, Billy.”

BILLY
(amazed) “Really? Oh! Do you think you’ll see something familiar should we visit one of the cities or something, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I’ll have to see the city for myself first to be sure, Billy. Let’s hope there aren’t any angry Sultans on this planet who will arrest us.”

DOCTOR
“I’m afraid that’s the thing, Nyssa. It’s hard to tell whether we’ve arrived at the height of the Arazo Empire’s reign or towards its end, whatever time period we’re in on this planet.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Couldn’t the TARDIS chronometers tell you what time period we’re in, Doctor?” (cheekily) “Or is it because you can’t trust them as a result of what happened when you took me home to nineteen sixty-five instead of nineteen sixty-three.”

DOCTOR
“Don’t remind me, Billy. And don’t be so cheeky.”

Billy sniggers a bit.

NYSSA
“So if the TARDIS chronometers aren’t telling you what time period we’re in on this planet, what’s happening and why have we been diverted here, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I don’t know, Nyssa. The TARDIS has been behaving a little sluggish lately. That’s why I suggest the old girl needs an overhaul. And that’ll take some time to sort out.”

Just then, the Doctor raises his tracker in the air as it picks up something.

NYSSA
“An energy source? Something the tracker’s picked up?”

DOCTOR
“Possibly. Though I would need more information to determine…Aha!”

NYSSA
“You’ve found something?”

DOCTOR
“Look over there, you two! On the horizon!”

Nyssa and Billy look to see what the Doctor sees.

BILLY
(awed) “Whoa! That’s…incredible!”

NYSSA
“It’s such a vast place!”

BILLY
“Seems like we have come to an Arabian Nights tale after all. Look at the place! I can even smell the scents coming from it!”

DOCTOR
“It rises up to six hundred metres high, I believe.”

BILLY
“Do you think we can reach it from where we are?”

DOCTOR
“I don’t see why not. It’ll have to be a long climb down this hill though.”

NYSSA
“I’ll try and see if I can find a way down to reach the bottom of the hill. Wait here for a moment, you two.”

With that, Nyssa goes off to find a way down the hill. Billy tugs at the Doctor whilst he’s distracted using his tracker.

BILLY
“Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“The thing is, you see…the signal’s being directed from that building in the centre. See? Straight ahead.”

BILLY
“Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“The tracker. It’s picking up the energy source from within that building. It’s faint, but it’s definitely there. Chronic particles to be precise.”

BILLY
“Doctor, don’t you think we should go after Nyssa?”

DOCTOR
“So the question is, ‘who would be generating time-inverted particles on such a vast scale’?” (Pause) “Where has Nyssa got to, Billy?”

BILLY
“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you! Didn’t you hear her say…?”

DOCTOR
“You’re usually good keeping watch over her, Billy. Why didn’t you keep watch over her this time, hmm?”

Billy sighs.

SCENE #7 – EXT – ANCIENT RUINS, EAVES OF MATALIA – DAY, MORNING
Nyssa meanwhile finds herself at some ancient ruins.

NYSSA
(calls) “Doctor; Billy! I’ve found some stairs. Maybe they’ll lead to…”

Nyssa stops mid-sentence as she takes in what she sees.

NYSSA
(awed) “Well…goodness! This I did not expect…”

Stepping forward, Nyssa marvels at the ruined stone room she’s in.

NYSSA
“Ancient ruins. They must be over a thousand centuries old. All crumbled and decaying.” (sighs; sadly) “Entropy.”

Exploring further, Nyssa notices something peculiar.

NYSSA
“Wait a minute. This statue. Its head’s come clean off. I can see it right beside the base of the statue.” (Pause) “And the body. It’s replaced by an awful mesh of metal and slime.” (shudders) “Who would do such a mean thing?”

Nyssa kneels down to the fallen king’s head on the ground.

NYSSA
(sympathetically) “He must have been a great king when this statue was built. Poor king. I wonder what his name was.” (Pause) “Perhaps there’s a memorial on the base of…”

Just then, a couple of monsters appear behind Nyssa and roughly grab her. Nyssa cries out loud once she’s been captured, struggling to break free.

NYSSA
(cries) “Let go of me! Let me go whoever you are!”

The monsters snarl and growl viciously. They are the Sgrans, who are like giant scrawny fish men. Their names are Klaw and Car.

KLAW
“You shall not escape from us! You are in our territory!”

CAR
“We don’t like spies who sneak into our territory!”

NYSSA
(protests) “I’m not a spy! Please let me go and I’ll tell you who I am…”

KLAW
“Not allowed! You see…we’re hungry!”

CAR
“Us big guys don’t like to be kept waiting to eat!”

Nyssa then kicks one of the Sgrans in the shin and elbows the other. Both Sgrans groan in pain as Nyssa runs forward to escape. But she’s immediately caught again by Klaw who recovers quickly.

KLAW
“Don’t think you can get away from us that easily!”

CAR
“We want some meat!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Doctor; Billy! Help me! I’m…”

But Nyssa’s cries get muffled as Klaw covers her mouth.

SCENE #8 – EXT – EAVES OF MATALIA, JUNGLE – DAY, MORNING
The Doctor and Billy meanwhile hear Nyssa’s cry and become panic-striken.

BILLY
“Doctor, that was…”

DOCTOR
“Yes Billy, I heard her! Come on!”

With that, the Doctor and Billy unhesitatingly run for it down the hill to rescue Nyssa.

SCENE #9 – EXT – ANCIENT RUINS, EAVES OF MATALIA – DAY, MORNING
Back at the ancient ruins, Car raises one his fin-like arms and protrudes a spike-like gun. He aims it at Nyssa who is still held hostage by Klaw.

KLAW
“Hold still, pretty thing! Car here wants to gets a good shot!”

NYSSA
“Guns! You have guns in your arms! Your arms are like…fins. You’re fish men! Giant fish men with large teeth.”

CAR
(savagely) “I’m going to shoot maggot holes in your belly!”

Car is about to open fire before three newcomers arrive. They are Kexaj, Toma and Criala. They raise their weapons at Car and Klaw, which are laser bows.

KEXAJ
“Toma; Criala, open fire!”

With that, Kexaj, Toma and Criala open fire at Car, breaking off his aim at Nyssa with his spike-like gun in his fin-like arm. They then shoot Klaw, who releases Nyssa. Both Sgrans shriek in pain once fired upon.

CAR
(shrieks) “What…what just happened?”

KLAW
(accusingly) “You! You three show up again!”

CAR
(in pain) “My arm! They shot my arm!”

KEXAJ
(shouts) “That’s enough! Leave now or else we will shoot for good!”

KLAW
“Come on, Car! We can’t have our fun. Let’s go whilst we’ve got skins left.”

CAR
“My poor arm, Klaw! How am I ever to eat again with an arm like this?”

KLAW
“Shut up, Car! It’s your teeth you use for eating, not your arm!”

Car sobs away as he and Klaw leave. Nyssa recovers as she turns to her three rescuers.

NYSSA
“Thank you. You saved my life. I really appreciate it.”

Gradually, the three guardians slowly advance towards her, their weapons raised. Nyssa nervously backs away.

NYSSA
“What are you doing?” (Pause) “No! Stay back! Please, stay back!”

SCENE #10 – EXT – ANCIENT RUINS, EAVES OF MATALIA – DAY, MORNING
The Doctor and Billy meanwhile climb down the hill to where the ancient ruins are where Nyssa was.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Nyssa?! Nyssa, where are you? Nyssa?!”

They find the place deserted.

BILLY
“She must have been here. This is the only place she could have called from.”

DOCTOR
“Yes Billy, you’re right. Look!”

BILLY
“What? Where?”

DOCTOR
“On the ground.”

The Doctor and Billy look down to the ground to find a trail of green ooze on the grass. The Doctor kneels down to check as he picks up a bit of the ooze to smell it.

BILLY
“What is it? Slime?”

DOCTOR
(sniffs) “Not sure. It could be blood.”

BILLY
“Blood? Blood’s usually red isn’t it, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Human blood is. But remember we’re on an alien planet. The people who live here could have green blood compared to you, Billy. Like the Sontarans, remember?”

BILLY
“Let’s not get talking about the Sontarans, shall we?” (Pause) “So you think Nyssa’s been captured then.”

DOCTOR
“Possibly.”

BILLY
(anxiously) “Then we must find her. Whoever’s taken her could have gotten far away from here…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “Easy Billy, there’s no need to panic. Nyssa could be well within a few miles. We just have to work out whoever it was that took her could be.”

BILLY
“But who would have taken her, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(thinks; gradually) “Let’s search for clues as to where Nyssa is, shall we?”

BILLY
(eagerly) “Okay, where do we start?”

DOCTOR
“Well you look on the ground; I’ll look along the walls of these ancient ruins. Hopefully we should find a clue or two.”

With that, the Doctor goes to search along the walls whilst Billy searches on the ground. As they look, the Doctor makes some notes on the architecture of the ancient stone walls. Billy meanwhile finds something, as he lifts up a hidden door from the ground which leads into a secret passageway below.

DOCTOR
(muses) “Hmm. These ruins must have lasted for over a thousand centuries. A shame they got torn down. We could have had some insight as to what this building was meant to be. They could hold some historical significance…”

BILLY
(calls) “Doctor, I’ve found something!”

DOCTOR
“You know I’m more curious as to who it was Nyssa was trying to get away from and who captured her…”

BILLY
(calls) “Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Whether they had a grudge against her because she was walking on sacred ground…”

BILLY
(calls) “Doctor, will you listen!”

DOCTOR
“Billy, perhaps you should check to see whether there are any footprints on the ground. Maybe that way we can determine what species captured Nyssa…”

BILLY
(shouts) “Doctor, please!”

DOCTOR
“Billy, my dear chap! There’s no need to shout!”

BILLY
“Look what I’ve found!”

Billy shows the Doctor the hidden door he’s just found. The Doctor kneels down beside Billy to take a closer look, seeing the secret passageway below.

DOCTOR
“Oh I say! Billy, there’s a secret passageway leading downwards!”

BILLY
“I know, Doctor! Nyssa must be down there! It must be where the aliens who captured her took her!”

DOCTOR
“There’s a ladder to help us get down there! It’s a good thing we found the hidden door in the ground when we did!”

The Doctor climbs down the ladder first whilst Billy remains behind, put-out that the Time Lord didn’t acknowledge that he found the hidden door in the ground first.

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Come on, Billy! Don’t stand about up there! Nyssa needs our help! Shut the door on your way down, there’s a good chap!”

Billy sighs as he climbs down the ladder after the Doctor into the secret passageway.

BILLY
(sighs) “Yes Doctor.”

Billy pulls the door closed once he and the Doctor are inside, covering the ground above.

SCENE #11 – INT – UNDERGROUND, ANCIENT RUINS – DAY, MORNING
The Doctor and Billy soon reach the bottom of the ladder, as they’ve now come down into an underground passageway. Rushing water echoes where they are as they make their way down a corridor.

BILLY
“Hey Doctor, do you hear that? Water! We must be close to a waterfall!”

DOCTOR
“Usually the people in the provinces of Arazo Four have pipework-based systems in order to collect their water from rivers and lakes. The pipes are probably above our heads which lead into the palace.”

BILLY
“Intriguing!”

A moment of silence ensues as the Doctor and Billy continue walking down the corridor.

BILLY
“Doctor, sorry if this sounds silly, but why would the people of this planet build an underground passageway like this? For war purposes? To connect one building to another?”

DOCTOR
“It’s my theory that they built the passageway for work labour. With all these alcoves interconnected, you can see the troughs on the wall. They were probably used for digging and hewing into the rock.”

BILLY
“You mean…coal mining? They used to mine for coal underground?”

DOCTOR
“Or they mined for diamonds; gold; jewels; perhaps a stronger mineral than what you humans know already.”

BILLY
“Gosh!” (sniffs) “Ugh! The stench is foul down here. It’s like rotting decay.”

DOCTOR
“Probably the remains of dead workers who suffered down here. Sorry for being so morbid, [Billy…”]

BILLY
(cries) “Doctor, look! There’s Nyssa!”

At that, Billy runs forward, finding Nyssa lying unconscious on the ground. He kneels down to check she’s okay, patting his face and trying to revive her. The Doctor joins and kneels down beside him.

BILLY
(anxiously) “Nyssa?! Nyssa darling, are you okay? Can you hear me?!”

No response.

BILLY
(panics) “Oh what’s wrong with her?! Who’s done this to my dear darling Nyssa?!”

DOCTOR
“Billy, calm down. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.”

The Doctor takes over from Billy to check on Nyssa.

BILLY
“Is there anything you can do for her?”

DOCTOR
“I hope so. She’s not concussed or bleeding anywhere, so that’s a good sign.”

BILLY
“Good enough to revive her, yeah?”

DOCTOR
“Hopefully. I’m not a magician but…”

BILLY
(realises; cries) “Doctor, look out!”

On the alert, the Doctor and Billy to see two Sgrans enter and appear before them. They are Totrino the leader and his comrade Itrasal. They snarl and laugh as they approach.

TOTRINO
“Well, well, well, Itrasal. What have we got here?!”

ITRASAL
“I don’t know, Totrino! But they certainly taste delicious!”

BILLY
“Doctor, these things! They look like…scrawny fish men!”

DOCTOR
(grimly) “They’re Sgrans, Billy.”

BILLY
“Sgrans?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. And they’re not friendly. They’ll eat you alive!”

TOTRINO
“That’s right, you trespassers!”

Just then, the two Sgrans get shot at before they can fire their fin-like guns in their arms. Criala and Toma enter as they fire shots at the Sgrans with their laser bows. The Sgrans howl enraged and in pain.

CRIALA
(cries) “Get out! Get out of here, you parasites!”

TOMA
(cries) “I love this, Criala! Shooting at Sgranies!”

Criala and Toma  keep on firing whilst Totrino and Itrasal retreat.

TOTRINO
“Back, Itrasal! Back to our hideout! We’ll return to the others!”

ITRASAL
(groans) “Aww and I was ready to gnash my teeth into these two morsels we found!”

TOTRINO
“Don’t defy me, Itrasal! Come now! At once!!!”

With that, the two Sgrans retreat back into the darkness from whence they came in the corridor. As soon as they have gone, Criala and Toma lower their weapons.

TOMA
“Good shooting, Crialal!”

CRIALA
“Thank you, Toma. You’re so sweet!”

Just then, Kexaj the leader enters.

KEXAJ
“Good work, you two!”

Billy attends to Nyssa whilst the Doctor stands up to thank the three guardians.

DOCTOR
“Thank you, you three! Got here just in the nick of time. Most appreciated. I’m the Doctor and this is…”

KEXAJ
(barks) “Restrain our three visitors!”

At that, Criala and Toma surround the Doctor, Billy and Nyssa and raise their laser bows at them.

DOCTOR
“Was it something I said?”

KEXAJ
“We have captured you! You three are our prisoners! You will come back with us!”

DOCTOR
(deduces) “So, you’re the ones who kidnapped Nyssa. Not the Sgrans. You left her body to be abandoned in this corridor until she was found by me and Billy.”

CRIALA
“We intended to catch all three of you before the Sgrans came. We didn’t expect them to find this place.”

TOMA
“Our security measures are getting shabbier, Kexaj.”

KEXAJ
(frustrated) “Yes, we’ll discuss that another time, Toma.”

Just then, Nyssa regains consciousness and looks into Billy’s eyes.

NYSSA
(relieved) “Billy? Oh thank goodness, you’re here!”

BILLY
(pleased) “Hello Nyssa! You’re alright? You’re not hurt?”

NYSSA
(disorientated) “No. Just feel…rather sleepy.”

Nyssa slumbers a bit whilst Billy cradles her in his arms. The Doctor turns to the three guardians.

DOCTOR
(accusingly) “You drugged her! The three of you drugged Nyssa!”

CRIALA
“We only intended to use her as bait. We’re not killers.”

Nyssa momentarily regains consciousness again.

NYSSA
“Billy? Is the Doctor here? Is he with you?”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Yes Nyssa, don’t worry. I’m nearby. All is safe and sound for the moment. It depends on how our three rescuers are going to treat us after they sorted out the Sgrans for us.”

NYSSA
(confused) “Sgrans?”

BILLY
“Here Nyssa. Let me help you up.”

Billy helps Nyssa up to her feet.

NYSSA
“Thank you, Billy.”

KEXAJ
“You are to come with us to the Matalia Court.”

DOCTOR
“Oh, we’re expected?”

TOMA
“His lordship Lord Ganl has sent us to collect you. You three have been summoned.”

DOCTOR
“Really. Well, I don’t think we heard the summons. So, you’ll have to tell Lord Ganl [that…”]

KEXAJ
(threateningly) “You will come with us now! Or we’ll take you with us by force!”

CRIALA
“Kexaj! No need to be so rough.”

But Kexaj takes out his communicator and speaks into it.

KEXAJ
(through intercom) “Mr. Dalgix. Six people to teleport back to the courtroom now!”

DOCTOR
“No! Mr. Kexaj, wait! Don’t!”

But it’s too late. The teleport is soon in progress as the three guardians Kexaj, Toma and Criala take Nyssa, Billy and the Doctor as they beam out to the Matalia Court.

SCENE #12 – INT – COURTROOM, GANL’S PALACE – DAY, MORNING
In the courtroom of Ganl’s palace at the Matalia Court, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are brought in by Kexaj, Toma and Criala.

DOCTOR
“Nice furnishing you have. Fine scented rooms. Wouldn’t you say so, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Oh yes, definitely. Billy?”

BILLY
“Oh yes, of course. Definitely nice furnishing and fine scented rooms you have here.”

DOCTOR
“Though that’s not to say I’m feeling comfortable right now since we are being treated like common criminals.”

NYSSA
“Or captured fugitives.”

BILLY
“Yeah, what’s the game?”

Not answering the TARDIS trio’s questions, Kexaj soon steps forward before the throne in the courtroom. Toma and Criala hold Nyssa, Billy and the Doctor whilst in the courtroom.

KEXAJ
“I…Kexaj, first Asleve Guardian from Matalia; Leader of all the Guardians of Arazo Four…present the Doctor and his companions Nyssa and Billy before your worshipful excellency.”

DOCTOR
(groans) “Oh please. Let’s not go through all this ritual mumbo jumbo.”

NYSSA
“Show respect, Doctor.”

KEXAJ
(boldly) “Behold…his lordship, Lord Ganl, and the great guardian of Arazo Four, Mr. Dalgix.”

Kexaj steps back, as Lord Ganl and Dalgix enter. Lord Ganl sits in the throne chair with Dalgix at his side. They study Nyssa, Billy and the Doctor with keen interest.

LORD GANL
“So, Kexaj. You and your comrades have brought the Doctor and his friends to us.”

KEXAJ
“Yes, my lord. We brought them at your request.”

LORD GANL
(to Doctor) “Doctor, my court and I welcome you and your friends to Arazo Four. We are pleased you came.”

DOCTOR
(politely) “Well, that’s very kind of you, Lord Ganl. Though the reception committee wasn’t quite what we expected. Needless to say, it was downright rude.”

BILLY
“Yeah! Your servants have a nerve treating us like hardened criminals. What did we do to deserve that? We’ve done nothing wrong.”

NYSSA
(whispers) “Billy dear, let the Doctor handle this.”

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Nyssa.” (to Ganl) “My friend Billy’s got a point, your lordship. We came here unintentionally and we don’t know what we’ve done to upset you.”

LORD GANL
“My apologies, Doctor. My people did not mean to treat you so unkindly.” (to Dalgix) “Mr. Dalgix, tell your guardians to lower their weapons. Treat these three fairly.”

DALGIX
“Very well, my lord.” (to Kexaj; Toma; Criala) “Kexaj; Toma; Criala, lower your weapons.”

KEXAJ
“As you wish, Mr. Dalgix; Lord Ganl.”

With that, Kexaj; Toma and Criala lower their weapons, releasing the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy.

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Lord Ganl. Most kind.”

NYSSA
“We appreciate your hospitality.”

LORD GANL
“But I’m afraid your arrival here was expected. We’ve been tracking you for some time, Doctor. We waited for the right moment and diverted your ship to Arazo Four for the very purpose of my guardians to bring you here.”

BILLY
“So you’re the ones who brought us here against our will!”

DOCTOR
“Billy, please. There’s time for your ship cruise with Nyssa later.” (to Ganl) “Tell us, Lord Ganl. What is the honour we have of coming to your court?”

Moment of silence.

LORD GANL
(gradually) “I am a hermit, Doctor. A hermit far away from home. In fact, you could say we are all hermits. Me, Mr. Dalgix, Kexaj, Toma and Criala.” (Pause) “I was once a former elder of the High Council from the Deno system. Now I’m exiled to this planet.”

DALGIX
“And I used to be the Keeper of Knowledge in the Deno system and an Asleve Leader. Now I work for Lord Ganl as his secretary. Kexaj; Toma and Criala also work for me as Asleves. They serve me as guardians and I hold the position of being Great Guardian to Arazo Four.”

NYSSA
“Very interesting, but you haven’t explained why you have brought us here…”

DOCTOR
(interrupts; realises) “Hang on, Nyssa, wait a minute.” (Pause) “Did you say…the Deno system, Lord Ganl?”

LORD GANL
“Yes Doctor. You’ve heard of it, I gather.”

DOCTOR
“Of sorts. I’ve briefly read about the Deno system and your wars. Never studied them, but…”

LORD GANL
“Then you would also know about the Coins of Deno. Am I right, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Vaguely know about them, yes. Though it’s more from myths and legends that I’ve read.”

LORD GANL
“Mr. Dalgix, please explain.”

DALGIX
“Very good, my lord.” (gradually; to Doctor) “The Coins of Deno are eight perfectly synchronised coins of power, Doctor. They were created and forged by the Dark Lord Vorshon himself. Each coin contains elements of power. With these elements combined, they form a united power. A power which the Dark Lord Vorshon intends to use to control the whole of the Deno system and eventually the universe.”

BILLY
“Dark Lord Vorshon? He’s a baddie then.”

CRIALA
“He’s the infamous ruler of the Deno system. He sought to create and forge these coins to gain control of the Deno system as well as the entire universe because he’s so power-hungry.”

NYSSA
“The entire universe? Can this Vorshon really do that? Control the entire universe?”

TOMA
“With the coins, yes. He used them to cause chaos and destruction across many planets in the Deno system and gain control of them.”

KEXAJ
“But he lost, you see. He lost his great power when the alliance of Asleves and humans fought against him. He lost the final battle at the end of the 40th Decade in Deno time.”

BILLY
“Well if this Vorshon person was destroyed, I don’t see what the problem is.”

DALGIX
“Vorshon was not destroyed. He regains strength and his spirit endures. The coins contain his life force as well as the elements. He was soon able to remount his armies and his intention of regaining control of the Deno system has never been stronger. All the good people of Deno are fighting against him and his army of Sgrans as we speak.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, we saw a few of the Sgrans on our way here. Very chummy, weren’t they?”

LORD GANL
“We sought a hideout to escape the Sgrans, but they eventually followed us. We had hoped to hide from them a little longer in order to establish a contingency plan. But time is now of the essence.”

NYSSA
“I’m sure this is all very fascinating, but I don’t see what this has to do with us three.”

DALGIX
“My dear lady! The Coins of Deno are scattered across the cosmos. Vorshon has sought to retrieve the coins back to him and he has sent his Sgrans to search for the eight coins in various parts of the universe.”

DOCTOR
“Well, good luck to them. It’s a big universe.”

LORD GANL
“That’s why we’ve brought you here, Doctor. You and your friends. We knew of your skills and your strengths as a Time Lord. We know of your TARDIS. Your coming to our planet has brought us hope. Hope at last!”

NYSSA
(curiously) “How could you know the Doctor; the Time Lords and the TARDIS?”

LORD GANL
(interjects) “You three…you must find the coins for us!”

BILLY
(surprised) “Us? You want us to find the coins? Out there in the universe? What for?”

DALGIX
“So you can bring them back to the Deno system when we re-join our allies in the fight against Vorshon. We give you this quest to search for the eight coins before the Dark Lord Vorshon gets his hands on them.”

NYSSA
(admonishingly) “You’re sending us out into space…into various parts of the universe…just so we can get the coins for you? So that you can use them yourselves for control of the Deno system?”

TOMA
“No! That is not our intent!”

CRIALA
“We do not wish to use the coins ourselves.”

KEXAJ
“The coins can only be used by Vorshon himself.”

DALGIX
“The coins must be returned to Deno so that they can be destroyed. In the one place where Vorshon created them. The Chamber of Oblivion!”

BILLY
(laughs) “Is that a real name for a chamber? It’s rather catchy.”

Billy laughs for a bit before he realises nobody’s laughing. He soon stops laughing and clears his throat.

DALGIX
(gradually) “The coins must be returned and destroyed. Not only to save the Deno system, but to save the universe itself. That is why we have summoned you here, Doctor. We give you the quest to carry it out for us.”

LORD GANL
“You are silent, Doctor. Do I take it you agree to help us?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Absolutely, definitely and positively…not!”

LORD GANL
“Not?”

CRIALA
“Doctor, you can’t refuse us. You must accept the quest. Doctor, please!”

KEXAJ
“Do this, Doctor. For the sake of our people in the Deno system.”

DOCTOR
“I’m sorry. Busily occupied. You have to find somebody else. Come on Nyssa; Billy…”

LORD GANL
“You can’t back out of this, Doctor. You must do this quest for us!”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “Must I? I’ve been brought here against my free will. Me and my friends. What gives you the right to divert my TARDIS and summon us here to do your death quest for you?”

DALGIX
“We know of you, Doctor. Your records in the universe are highly favourable. We assumed you would be willing to help us since you help others.”

DOCTOR
(retorts) “You can’t make me do this for you. I’m not interested. If you wanted me to help you, you should have asked nicely and not dragged me into it. You could have sent me a letter or an e-mail, if you use those sorts of communications?”

NYSSA
“Why does it have to be the Doctor? Why can’t it be another Time Lord?”

BILLY
“Or you yourselves? Just because the Doctor’s so popular, it doesn’t mean there aren’t others or yourselves to take the chance…”

DALGIX
“We have chosen the Doctor! It is our decision. If we say it must be the Doctor, then he’ll do it for us.”

DOCTOR
“Not according to me. I don’t allow people to control my destiny. Now if you’ve kindly finished with us, show us the way out please.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Come on, you two. No time to waste. Lots to see; lots to do.”

DALGIX
(calls) “Guardians! Seize them!”

Kexaj, Toma and Criala step forward and bar the time-travellers’ way out with their laser bows. A moment’s silence ensues.

DOCTOR
(to Ganl) “Keeping us here won’t get you anywhere, Lord Ganl. We still refuse to cooperate. And if your guardians try to shoot us, that still won’t get you anywhere.”

LORD GANL
(to Dalgix) “Mr. Dalgix, stop!” (Pause) “The Doctor’s right. We cannot force them to do what we want them to do. Tell your guardians to lower their weapons.”

DALGIX
“But my lord…”

LORD GANL
“Do as I say please, Mr. Dalgix.”

Gradually and reluctantly, Dalgix complies.

DALGIX
“Very well, my lord.” (to Kexaj; Toma; Criala) “Kexaj; Toma and Criala. Lower your weapons as his lordship wishes.”

KEXAJ
“Just as you say, Mr. Dalgix.”

The three guardians lower their weapons.

DOCTOR
(gratified) “Thank you. Now, please show us the way out.”

LORD GANL
“Yes Doctor. Just as you say. We shall send you back.” (to Dalgix) “Mr. Dalgix. Send the Doctor and his friends back. Use the teleport. You know what to do.”

DALGIX
(realises; slyly) “Yes, Lord Ganl.”

At that, Dalgix goes over to the teleport system nearby.

DALGIX
“Sending them back via the teleport…now.”

DOCTOR
(realises) “What? No, wait! Lord Ganl, don’t!”

NYSSA
“Doctor, what’s wrong?”

BILLY
“Yeah, what’s up, Doc?”

LORD GANL
(chuckles) “Goodbye Doctor. See you and your friends later.”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Lord Ganl, please! Don’t…”

But it’s too late as the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are soon teleported out of the courtroom. Lord Ganl’s chuckle turns into light laughter as he, Dalgix, Kexaj, Toma and Criala remain in the courtroom.

    Hello Tim.

I’ve just finished reading this and it was quite enjoyable. It has set the story up really well. The only gripe I have is that I found scene #1 and scene #2 to be rather silly and not my style of writing. But everything else was good. I look forward to reading the rest of this episode and ‘The Coins of Deno’ as a whole.

How are you doing with reading ‘Four Time-Travellers and a Baby’. I’ve been delayed with it since I haven’t got a laptop at the minute. My current one died on me two weeks and I may have to get a new one.

I’ll be sharing my thoughts on ‘The Visitation’ later today.

    See you later, WF92. 😃

      Hi WF92,

Glad you enjoyed Chapter 1 of ‘The Map to Time’. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. Sorry to hear you found scenes #1 and #2 rather silly. I found them fun scenes to write. They do become significant in terms of reflecting the end of the episode. Hope you enjoy the rest of ‘The Map of Time’. I’ve nearly finished editing ‘The Holiday of Romance’, so hopefully I’ll be onto editing ‘The Dreadnought’ and ‘The War of Deno’ soon.

I’ve just read Chapter 4 of ‘Four Time-Travellers and a Baby’. I enjoyed it. Interesting to see Michael reuniting with his family and the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan already knowing his parents. I hope to check out Michael’s first adventure with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan soon. My parents and I need a new laptop as the current one we have is getting old. We’ve used it to death for Zoom meetings over the past two years, thanks to the pandemic. 😀

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on ‘The Map to Time, Chapter 1’ and ‘The Visitation’. I’ll check out your thoughts on ‘The Visitation’ soon.

      Tim 🙂
