‘The Prime Factor’ – Introduction

Welcome to ‘The Prime Factor’ of ‘The Fifth Doctor by Tim Bradley’ series!  This story has a number of inspirations behind it. One of them was to write another Douglas Adams-styled adventure with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy. Something very akin to the ‘Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen’ story.

I’ve written other ‘Fifth Doctor’ stories in Douglas Adams-style. This includes ‘The Space Hotel’, ‘The Austen Code’ and ‘The Stockbridge Terror’. I read and listened to ‘The Krikkitmen’ book/audio a chapter per day whilst writing ‘The Prime Factor’ from June to July 2019 for my very own inspiration.

Another source of inspiration came from visiting Swansea in May 2018. As well as wanting to write another Douglas Adams-styled adventure with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy, I also wanted to include a 1920s ‘Black Orchid’ element to it. Something to make it quite romantic for Nyssa and Billy!

I also had an idea to write a story featuring Billy’s school. I had in mind to write a story where Billy travelled back in time with Nyssa and the Fifth Doctor to stop something happening with an evil headmaster who turned out to be an alien dictator. There were elements of ‘Matilda’ involved here.

In fact, a lot of the story I’ve written in ‘The Prime Factor’ is based on a superhero series I created featuring elements of ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl and the ‘Transformers’ series called ‘Billy Prime’. This was where I became inspired with creating the character of Billy Walker in ‘Doctor Who’. I like Billy’s name a lot.

There was also the idea I had of writing a story that was a sequel/prequel to ‘Arc of Infinity’ featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy. This would include appearances of Paul Jerricho’s Castellan character and Colin Baker’s Commander Maxil character. I was pretty excited by doing this prospect.

With these ideas of a Douglas Adams-styled adventure; having some of it set in Swansea 1920 (which eventually became 1930); featuring Billy’s school in the past and having the Castellan and Maxil from ‘Arc of Infinity’, the story eventually became ‘The Prime Factor’. Again, pretty exciting! 🙂

I’ve found ‘The Prime Factor’ to be a bolder story to write compared to other stories I’ve written in my ‘Doctor Who’ series of stories featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy on ‘Bradley’s Basement’. There’s so much going on in this adventure and I wish it was longer to add more depth to characters.

From reading/hearing ‘The Krikkitmen’, I decided to make this a two-part bumper adventure akin to ‘Resurrection of the Daleks’ from the Peter Davison era of ‘Doctor Who’. This was before ‘Tartarus’ came out as a two-part bumper adventure in September 2019, but that shouldn’t be a big problem.

One of the most exciting aspects of the story was to feature an old enemy for the Doctor and friends to face. This ended up being the Kraals from ‘The Android Invasion’. I’ve always wanted to do the Kraals. I hope I’ve done them justice by including them as well as their androids into the story’s mix.

I’ve also introduced a brand-new villain in the story in Billy’s evil headmaster called Mr. Roger Lewis. But who is Mr. Lewis anyway? Why is he terrorising Billy’s school? Will the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy be able to defeat and discover his true identity? Well, that’s something you’re bound to find out in this.

I also wanted to feature the city of Cardiff into the adventure. The TARDIS visits Cardiff in two time zones. This will be in 1957 at Billy’s school in Churchwood Street as well as 2012 where the TARDIS parks outside the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. Does this sound familiar from the new series? 😀

The story also features many cameos of various Doctors and companions from past and future, pitching in to help the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy to save the universe. But which Doctors and companions help them? Why do they help them? It’ll soon be unravelled as you read on in this story.

‘The Prime Factor’ is a love letter to ‘Doctor Who’ in all of its incarnations. But it’s also a love letter to my favourite era of ‘Doctor Who’, which is the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa era through the TV series and Big Finish audios. I hope you’ll enjoy this adventure and find the mysteries unravelled really exciting.

There are many surprises to be found in this story. As well as cameo appearances of other Doctors and companions, there are appearances of characters who have appeared seen in my ‘Fifth Doctor’ series before. This includes Maxwell Edison from ‘The Stockbridge Terror’ and James Darby from ‘City of Monsters’.

I’m pleased I finished this story in time before seeing Sarah Sutton at the ‘Film & Comic Con Glasgow’ in August 2019. I told Sarah about this story and even shared that Colin Baker’s Maxil was in it. I told Sarah I didn’t include the chicken-like hat he wore in ‘Arc of Infinity’. She was glad about that. 🙂

      Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed ‘Warzone’/’Conversion’ recently. Sounds good.

I’ve heard ‘Interstital’ and now onto ‘Feast of Fear’ next. I’m nervous and excited about that.

Hope you enjoy ‘The Prime Factor’ soon.

      Tim. 🙂
