‘The Prime Factor’, Part Two, Chapter 16

16. Saved the Universe Once Again

SCENE #154 – INT – CYBEROSS PARLIAMENT CENTRE, CYBEROSS – DAY, EVENING
Back in the main room of the Cybeross Parliament Centre, the two sets of androids short-circuit, stagger and shudder with electric sparks coming out of their bodies. They eventually collapse to the floor once they’ve been knocked out. The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy slowly get up from the floor once they see the androids are down.

NYSSA
“Doctor? Is it safe?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa. The shockwave sent out from the explosion via the Prime Factor’s overload short-circuited the androids. They won’t bother us.”

LEWIS
(mournfully) “Those androids! I sent them out to capture you when they came here in my hour of need! They were leftovers loyal to my command instead of the Kraals! They managed to find me when they came.”

DOCTOR
(wryly) “Yes! And a good job they did in trying to capture us and stop us, Galvakon.”

NYSSA
“You failed, Galvakon. The Prime Factor’s been destroyed!”

BILLY
“Yes! I believe that’s one up to us.”

LEWIS
(angrily) “You fool, Doctor! You stupid fool! You destroyed the greatest and most powerful weapon in the universe!”

MAXIL
“Yes, Doctor. I’m very disappointed in you and your friends’ actions! That weapon was meant to go back to Gallifrey!”

DOCTOR
“I’m sorry, Maxil. But it had to be done.”

LEWIS
“Why, Doctor?! Why destroy the greatest and most powerful weapon ever?!”

DOCTOR
“Because the Prime Factor corrupts anyone who uses it. Whether it’d be good intentions or not. It has been used unwisely. Both by you Galvakon and many other people before you on Cybeross. I had to prevent anyone from ever using it unwisely. So I destroyed it.”

LEWIS
“You shouldn’t have done it, Doctor! It was the thing I most wanted!”

DOCTOR
“I know that, Galvakon. That’s why I did it. I had to destroy it.”

Just then, there is a sound like thunder overhead as well as rumbling almost like a tremor nearby.

NYSSA
“Doctor! That sound! And the ground shuddering!”

BILLY
“It’s like a thunderstorm and an earthquake happening at the same time.”

DOCTOR
“It’s the black hole closing and the universe stabilising. Don’t worry, you two. Everything will be alright now. My TARDIS has seen to that!”

SCENE #155 – EXT – OUTER SPACE – N/A
In outer space, the black hole dissipates, closing completely. Soon, everything becomes stable in the universe. Nothing else is being drained of energy.

SCENE #156 – INT – COMPUTER ROOM, CAPITOL – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back on Gallifrey, in the computer room within the Capitol, the Castellan and the Time Lord technician he’s working with check on the situation regarding the black hole created in space.

CASTELLAN
(impatiently) “What is it? What’s wrong? Come on, man! Give me an update!”

TECHNICIAN
(gradually) “The crisis has been averted, sir.”

CASTELLAN
(baffled) “What? What is that supposed to mean?”

TECHNICIAN
“The black hole has died out in space. It’s no longer there.”

Just then, the communication console bleeps vibrantly.

TECHNICIAN
“Castellan, we’re receiving another communication from the planet Cybeross.”

CASTELLAN
(insistently; bitterly) “Give me your seat, technician!”

The technician obliges as he gets out of his seat for the Castellan to sit in. The Castellan sits in the technician’s seat and answers the communication from Cybeross itself.

DOCTOR (V’O)
(cheerily) “Hello there! Gallifrey, are you receiving me? It’s the Doctor here!”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “Doctor, tell me what you have done! You didn’t destroy the Prime Factor weapon, did you?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
(cheerily) “I did, actually.”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone; angrily) “You idiot, Doctor! How could you have destroyed the most powerful weapon ever created in the known universe?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Easily! I just did!”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “But all that power in those twelve gemstones! Simply going to waste!” (bitterly) “Why couldn’t you have just stuck to the mission under Maxil’s supervision?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“That was before I discovered you and the CIA had manipulated the Kraals into all this mess when you’re not supposed to. It’s against the Time Lord code of non-intervention, isn’t it?”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “Doctor! Not on an open channel!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“It doesn’t matter either way, Castellan. The High Council is going to send you a summons to answer for your actions.”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “No!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“And to be quite frank, I’m happy about that. I’m appalled by how you and the CIA have handled this crisis regarding the Prime Factor especially when manipulating the Kraals to your own ends against Galvakon without him realising it. I’m appalled by the Time Lords’ actions – my own people – in general. It’s just as well I fled Gallifrey in the first place when I did.”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “But why, Doctor? Why destroy the Prime Factor anyway? You could’ve utilised some of that power yourself!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Why would I want that? I’ve got my own TARDIS and my friends to keep me content. And as I said to Maxil and Galvakon here, the Prime Factor was a weapon that should never have been created by the Time Lords. It should never have been given to Cybeross at the time.”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “The Time Lords had their own reasons for giving it to them at the time.”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Something I’m deeply ashamed of knowing.” (Pause) “Thank you for assigning to me the mission by the way, Castellan. It has been very enlightening for me and my friends to take it on.”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “I wish I’d never assigned you with Maxil on the mission in the first place. If only your human male companion wasn’t involved.”

DOCTOR (V’O)
Billy’s a great friend of mine, Castellan. You should at least respect that.” (Pause) “Oh by the way! Maxil will be returning to you with Galvakon as his prisoner. So at least you should get some compensation out of that as a result of sending Maxil, me and my friends on the mission.”

CASTELLAN
(through microphone) “I will never forget this, Doctor! Even when I die and regenerate, I will never forget this!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Neither will I, Castellan.” (Pause; cheerily) “Well, that’s all from me for now, Castellan. Until next time! Bye!”

With that, the Doctor ends the communication with the Castellan.

TECHNICIAN
“The communication link from Cybeross is broken, Castellan.”

The Castellan thumps his fist on the console desk before getting up out of the technician’s seat for him to sit in. The Castellan paces about for a bit after having his conversation with the Doctor.

CASTELLAN
(bitterly) “Curse that Doctor! I hope all his enemies will hunt him down on the day he’s no longer able to regenerate.”

Another bleep echoes vibrantly from the communications console.

CASTELLAN
(annoyed) “What is it now?”

TECHNICIAN
(gradually) “It’s a summons from the High Council, Castellan. They wish to see you, sir.”

CASTELLAN
(sighs) “Oh my days! I hope the Lord President is in a good mood after his recent regeneration a few days ago.”

SCENE #157 – INT – CYBEROSS PARLIAMENT CENTRE, CYBEROSS – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, back on the planet Cybeross, inside the parliament centre within the city centre, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy watch as Maxil puts Lewis/Galvakon under arrest with the immobiliser pack still attached to him.

MAXIL
“Galvakon of the planet Cybeross. I, Maxil of the Gallifreyian Chancellery Guard, place you under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. I also warn you that anything you say will be taken down and may be used against you as evidence in an inquiry in a court of law. You will be taken to Gallifrey to face interrogation and possibly stand trial.”

LEWIS
“You don’t have to inform me of my rights. I know how a criminal is treated on your planet, Time Lord.”

BILLY
“Doctor, how is Maxil going to get Galvakon back to Gallifrey? Do we have to take them there by TARDIS?”

DOCTOR
“No need to worry about that, Billy. I believe the transport Maxil requires will arrive any minute…now!”

At that moment, a TARDIS appears before them. It whooshes and grinds before making a loud thump as it lands.

NYSSA
“How did you know that, Doctor? How did you know a TARDIS would come for Maxil to take him and Galvakon back to Gallifrey?”

DOCTOR
“I guessed the Castellan would be sending it. Since I told him Maxil was alive, he would want him to return Galvakon back to Gallifrey for trial, wouldn’t he?”

BILLY
“It’s a very unusual looking TARDIS. It’s simply a white box. Like a cylinder.”

DOCTOR
“It looks to me like a type fifty TARDIS. I used to have one of those when I was very young.”

LEWIS
(laments) “I never got to enjoy ruling the planet Cybeross with my dear Tegan. She and I…we could’ve done so much together. I with the Prime Factor in my hands…could’ve conquered billions of galaxies. And she would be my queen at my side!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t worry about Tegan, Mr. Galvakon. She’s safe back on Earth. We made sure of that. I’m sure she’ll get on fine in her life without you.”

LEWIS
(angrily) “Curse you, Doctor! Curse you and your friends! Especially you, young Billy Walker! Yes, I remember you now! You were always a troublemaker in my class.”

BILLY
(protests) “I was never a troublemaker!”

NYSSA
“Don’t listen to him, Billy. He’s making you feel bad about yourself. Don’t fall for it. He’s just being petty.”

LEWIS
“There were powers in that Prime Factor that I never got to make use of. Such as the gemstones of nature; strength and love. That love gemstone could’ve been very essential for me in my conquests. Especially for me and my love, Tegan Handshaw!”

MAXIL
“Enough talking, Galvakon. Inside the white time capsule now!”

LEWIS
(scoffs; to Maxil) “And I hope you’re taking down everything I say about my woes and laments, Commander.”

MAXIL
“Recording every detail, yes. Now get inside!”

Maxil pushes Lewis/Galvakon inside the white TARDIS very roughly. Lewis/Galvakon ends up falling into the capsule as he goes.

DOCTOR
(tutts) “Steady on, Maxil! There’s no need to be rough with him.”

Maxil turns back to the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy before he goes.

MAXIL
“I shall return to Gallifrey with Galvakon, Doctor. Your services are no longer required now. The mission is over.”

DOCTOR
“Maxil!”

A moment of silence ensues before the Doctor steps forward to address Maxil.

DOCTOR
“Thank you for helping Nyssa; Billy and me. We appreciate the company you’ve given us during our mission.”

MAXIL
(rebukes) “You consider this a victory, Doctor. Maybe it is for you. But in the eyes of the Castellan and me, it’s been an absolute disaster. Everything would’ve been alright if you had just obeyed instructions as we told you to.”

DOCTOR
“I did what had to be done, Maxil. For the sake of keeping stability within the universe. And not to let anyone have power that wasn’t rightfully theirs and using it unwisely. Surely you can appreciate that.”

MAXIL
(gradually; rebukes) “Let me make something clear here, Doctor. Your conduct in this mission has been appalling!”

DOCTOR
(sighs) “Just as you say, Maxil.”

MAXIL
“The next time you meet me, it will be on Gallifrey. For you, it is yet to happen. For me, it has already past.”

DOCTOR
“Please don’t give me spoilers, Maxil.”

MAXIL
“I wasn’t going to. But I want to make my point clear.” (Pause) “I hope I’ll never see you again. Your lifestyle and behaviour disgust me. And I will be thankful to return to the life I had back on Gallifrey. Everything working in its proper order without any hindrance or disturbance from you.”

DOCTOR
(gradually; solemnly) “Well, if that’s the way you feel about me Maxil, then I’m very sorry to hear that.”

MAXIL
“Goodbye, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Yes goodbye, Maxil. All the best to you in the future.”

With that, Maxil enters the white time capsule. Very soon, the white time capsule dematerialises as it whooshes and grinds before heading off back to Gallifrey. Once gone, Nyssa and Billy join the Doctor.

BILLY
(shocked; annoyed) “Well of all the ungrateful…jerks!”

NYSSA
(shocked) “And you saved his life, Doctor. With the years of life you gave him in order to regenerate. We should’ve told him that!”

DOCTOR
(shrugs) “No, no! Don’t worry, Nyssa; Billy. It’s not important.”

BILLY
(shocked) “Not important! But Doctor, he…”

DOCTOR
“It’s what I came to expect from Maxil. Even when I see him again in my future, I don’t expect him to have changed much despite my protests to his approach on handling matters.”

NYSSA
“Well, at least he’s gone. Both he and Galvakon. That must be something.”

DOCTOR
“Yes.” (Pause; eagerly) “And now it’s time for us to return to the alien planet! Come on, you two!”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Why? Why are we heading back there?”

DOCTOR
“We’ve got your school teachers and fellow classmates to rescue, Billy. As well as your younger self of course.”

BILLY
(realises) “Oh yes, of course! Well, let’s get going!”

With that, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy make their way back to their TARDIS.

SCENE #158 – INT – CONTROL CENTRE, UNIDENTIFIED PLANET – DAY, MORNING
A while later, back in the Churchwood School duplicate on the alien planet, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy sort things out in Kraal control centre. They shut down the energy beam directed at Earth in the years 1957 and 2012.

BILLY
“There we are! This lever goes down.”

Billy pulls a lever.

BILLY
“And this lever goes down.”

Billy pulls another lever.

NYSSA
“That should be all the levers directed at the two time zones on Earth including nineteen fifty-seven and two thousand and twelve.”

DOCTOR
(pleased) “Splendid! That means the energy beam should be completely switched off. No more junk to be received from Earth in either the nineteen fifties or two thousand and twelve onto this planet.”

BILLY
“Will you have to destroy most of this equipment, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“No, no. The Time Lords will see to that. I’m sure they’ll do anything to cover up their mistakes once we leave here.”

NYSSA
“Doctor, I’m curious. And a little anxious.”

DOCTOR
“Really, Nyssa? What has made you curious and anxious at the same time?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Well, it’s just…are you sure you did the right thing? With overloading the Prime Factor weapon for it to be destroyed.”

DOCTOR
“Of course! I gave my reasons to Maxil, Galvakon and the Castellan. I was within my rights to have it destroyed. For it not to be used by wrong hands.”

NYSSA
“But, Doctor. Surely a weapon as powerful as that could’ve destroyed the universe anyway. Even with your TARDIS equipment and the force-field around it, it couldn’t have prevented destroying everything completely.”

BILLY
“Yeah, I mean…those gemstones. Were they really powerful when used for the Prime Factor weapon? They could’ve caused a chain reaction of explosions if the weapon was destroyed entirely.”

NYSSA
“Exactly!”

DOCTOR
“Oh come on, Nyssa; Billy! You’re spoiling the fun! Everything’s fine. I assure you!”

NYSSA
“How can you be so certain?”

BILLY
“Yeah, how is it that we’re all in one piece without the weapon destroying everything entirely?”

A moment of silence ensues, as the Doctor gradually takes something out of his coat pocket.

DOCTOR
“Because I have the twelve gemstones…here as you can see. In this plastic bag I’ve got. I’ve been keeping it in my coat pocket, hiding it from Maxil before he and Galvakon left.”

NYSSA
“You mean…those weren’t the real gemstones you blew up within the core mainframe of the Prime Factor weapon when you overloaded it and blew it up.”

DOCTOR
“No, they weren’t. They were party pieces I’ve picked up from various planets containing little reserves of power. They may not have been altogether powerful, but they caused the explosion I needed to destroy the Prime Factor device when it was intact. I made it look like my TARDIS equipment and forcefield was powerful enough to contain the explosion whilst we were watching in the main parliament room on Cybeross. Us three, Maxil and Galvakon himself.”

BILLY
(surprised) “Wow! I mean, um…I wasn’t expecting that!”

NYSSA
“So the Castellan, Maxil and Galvakon believe that you have destroyed the Prime Factor weapon with the gemstones intact, whereas in actual fact you kept the real gemstones hidden in your coat pocket and created the illusion that you had destroyed the Prime Factor indefinitely. With a real explosion contained by the forcefield projected by the TARDIS.”

DOCTOR
“Exactly, Nyssa! I always like it when you piece things together and explain it all to make it clearer. Billy was right. You do it beautifully.”

BILLY
(astonished) “This is most astonishing!”

NYSSA
“But why keep them hidden away from the Castellan, Maxil and Galvakon when you were destroying the weapon mainframe, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Oh come on, Nyssa. Surely you must know. It’s not the weapon mainframe that was important. It was the source of power for that weapon. I had to keep these gemstones hidden to prevent them getting them. They’re irreplaceable. You can construct a new mainframe but you can’t get brand-new gemstones like these! They’re once in a life-time.”

NYSSA
(slightly baffled) “I see.”

BILLY
“So, what are you going to do with those gemstones now, Doctor? I mean, are you going to keep them hidden in your TARDIS from the Castellan, Maxil and the others?”

DOCTOR
“Quite right, Billy! I’ll keep them hidden in a vault deep inside the TARDIS and with a secure encryption lock where no-one can open it. Only I will know of the secret code. And probably forget it should I ever grow older or regenerate. It’s bound to happen.”

NYSSA
“It’ll be a risk if you forget the code, Doctor. Surely someone will work it out despite your incumbent amnesia when it comes to it.”

DOCTOR
“Oh I’ll worry about that when I cross that bridge in future, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(unconvinced) “Really?”

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Yes really, Nyssa. Now let’s stop debating this and get on with sorting out those teachers and fellow classmates of yours, Billy.”

BILLY
“Nyssa might be right, Doctor. Are you sure this is the right way to go about it?”

NYSSA
“Yes, have you really thought this through, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Oh you know me, you two. I work these things out as I go along. It’s the best I can do. Now come on! Stop nattering and let’s get on with rescuing some people from a cupboard that Billy found!”

Eventually, the Doctor heads off with Nyssa and Billy following behind him.

SCENE #159 – INT – SCIENCE LABS, CHURCHWOOD SCHOOL – DAY, AFTERNOON
A short while later, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are in the science labs of the duplicate Churchwood School. They check on the unconscious bodies of staff and pupils, including young Billy, kept in the large cupboard they found earlier.

NYSSA
(concerned) “There are quite a lot of them, Doctor. How are we going to get them all inside the TARDIS without waking them up?”

DOCTOR
“Don’t worry, Nyssa. I’ll conduct mind links with everyone and see to it that they sleep and don’t wake up as we move each one of them into the TARDIS.”

BILLY
“Will you have to mind-wipe every one of these people, Doctor? Including me. Of the last day we had during that week with Mr. Lewis…I mean…he was Mr. Lewis when he was at school.”

DOCTOR
“Of course I will, Billy. You’d guessed that already, hadn’t you?”

BILLY
“Well, I did guess this was going to happen somehow. I mean, it all makes sense, doesn’t it? I lost my memory because I was asleep for most of the time. And I probably don’t remember being teleported when I came to because I probably had my mind wiped of the event. And you’re the one to do it aren’t you, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes I am, Billy. You don’t mind that, do you?”

BILLY
“No I don’t, Doctor. So long as you get me and the others back to Earth intact, everything will be fine. It will go as I remember after that terrible week with Lewis ended.”

NYSSA
“Perhaps some of the unpleasantness will be gone the moment you wake up and return to Earth as your younger self reunited with your parents, Billy.”

BILLY
“I hope so.”

DOCTOR
“Very well then. Let’s get on with it. I’ll conduct the first mind link with you Billy just to make sure everything’s secure about your future before you meet Nyssa and me. You don’t mind, do you?”

BILLY
“No, no. Be my guest, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Very well then.” (to young Billy) “Now, young Billy. This won’t hurt a bit.”

Gradually, the Doctor applies the fingers of his hands to young Billy’s head as he’s about to begin the mind link with him.

BILLY
“Oof!”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “Billy?”

BILLY
“Sorry um…when you just put your hands onto my younger self’s head, I could feel the electric shock coming from your fingertips.”

DOCTOR
“It wasn’t an electric shock, Billy.”

BILLY
“Well, that’s what it felt like anyway.”

NYSSA
“Billy, don’t interrupt.”

BILLY
“Sorry. Continue.”

Eventually, the Doctor gets back into doing his mind link with young Billy. This lasts for quite a while.

BILLY
(whispers; to Nyssa) “It feels eerie watching the Doctor doing a mind link on myself with me looking over my younger self.”

NYSSA
(whispers; to Billy) “I wonder what the Doctor’s doing with his mind linked to yours, Billy. It can’t be just a mind wipe from where we’re standing.”

BILLY
(puzzled; whispers; to Nyssa) “What do you mean?”

NYSSA
(hushes; whispers; to Billy) “Ssh! The Doctor’s coming out of it! Look!”

Nyssa and Billy watch. They see the Doctor end his mind link with young Billy.

DOCTOR
(sighs; relieved) “There! That’s all done and dusted!”

BILLY
(surprised) “You mean that’s it? Blimey, that was quick!”

DOCTOR
“I don’t waste time, Billy. Not with those sorts of things such as mind links.”

NYSSA
(concerned) “Doctor, what exactly have you done to young Billy’s mind?”

DOCTOR
“Exactly what I said I would do, Nyssa. I’ve made him sleep for as long as he needs to before we return him and the others back to Earth. And I also made sure his memory was erased of the last day he spent at school with Galvakon as Mr. Lewis his headmaster.”

NYSSA
“You’ve done something else though. Haven’t you, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“You know me too well, Nyssa. Yes, I’ve done something else to Billy’s mind.”

NYSSA
“Well, what is it, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Just given him a reminder. Like an alarm clock. You know…set something to remind him of the bad week he had at school with Mr. Lewis as his teacher. Something that could culminate in a bad dream when he’s travelling with us. With you and me, Nyssa. At a hotel somewhere in Swansea in the year nineteen thirty perhaps.”

BILLY
(realises) “You mean…that dream I had…the one that prompted us to start this adventure in the first place…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “It was because of me planting the reminder to you to come back in time and sort the mess out with Mr. Lewis who eventually turned out to be Galvakon wanting to capture Chester Blurr so that he can have the Prime Factor weapon for conquest on Cybeross. At least, that’s how I hope that reminder will turn out to be. To culminate into some dream and such. Sorry, Billy. But I had to be cruel to be kind there to give you a bad dream.”

BILLY
“No, no. No need to apologise. So that’s how I got the dream! Wow! And I didn’t realise.” (to Doctor) “And you were responsible for that, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Of course! I suppose you’re happy I did that for you, Billy.”

BILLY
“Yes I am. And a little disturbed.”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “And so you should be, Billy.” (to Doctor) “That was a very risky thing to do, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Oh come on, Nyssa! Don’t be a killjoy! It all worked out alright eventually, didn’t it?”

NYSSA
“So far. Things could be in a constant state of flux.”

DOCTOR
(scoffs) “Oh do stop worrying, Nyssa. I haven’t got time to debate about it now. I’ve got other people to sort out. To give mind wipes too. This time without giving them nightmares of course.”

NYSSA
“Of course! But it will cause side effects no doubt.”

DOCTOR
“Nyssa, stop being pessimistic and unreasonable. Now let me concentrate. I’ve got work to do. I’ll do Sean, Alexandra and Mrs. Simmons next.”

The Doctor makes a start on conducting mind links on the others. Nyssa and Billy watch nearby. Nyssa is unsettled whilst Billy is reassuringly beside her.

SCENE #160 – INT – DETENTION CENTRE, CAPITOL – DAY, AFTERNOON
Back on the planet Gallifrey, in the detention centre within the Capitol, the Castellan with a few of the Chancellery Guard interrogates Lewis/Galvakon, who sits restrained in a chair. One of the Chancellery Guard uses a weapon-like device to make Lewis/Galvakon talk as the Castellan fires questions.

CASTELLAN
(impatiently) “Tell us what we want to know! Answer!”

LEWIS
(defiantly) “I refuse to speak!”

CASTELLAN
(impatiently) “How did you come to know about the Prime Factor weapon in the first place? We Time Lords can induce great pain if we want to.”

LEWIS
(defiantly) “I defy everything you Time Lords stand for! You think you’re so superior to us, don’t you? But your people have ruined Cybeross because of the Prime Factor! We’ve become corrupt and war-mongering because of the weapon you’ve given to us! There will be no peace among our people! And you can’t change things because you say so! I will not help you in that! I refuse to answer any questions you give me! I refuse! Refuse! Refuse!!!!!”

Lewis/Galvakon laughs away manically whilst the Castellan sighs and looks away annoyed.

CASTELLAN
(to himself) “It’s a shame the High Council decreed us Time Lords not to inflict bright white light onto defendants in court with our eyes. Bright white light would be very useful now.”

At that moment, Maxil enters. He walks stiffly as if clutching himself in pain.

CASTELLAN
“Ah! Maxil! So you decided to show up, did you?”

MAXIL
(stiffly) “Apologies, Castellan. I had to have a check-up in the Capitol’s Infirmary. I haven’t been myself since I woke up to find the Doctor had destroyed the Prime Factor weapon.”

CASTELLAN
(bitterly) “All because of your negligence, Maxil!”

MAXIL
(stiffly) “There’s no need to rebuke me, sir.”

CASTELLAN
(bitterly) “But I do rebuke you, Maxil! You failed to keep the Doctor in check whilst on the mission! He outwitted you! And as a consequence, the Prime Factor is destroyed! It could’ve been of so much potential had we recovered it for ourselves!”

Lewis/Galvakon laughs away maniacally again at this point.

MAXIL
(stiffly) “There were obstacles to overcome, Castellan.”

CASTELLAN
(bitterly) “That’s no excuse, Maxil!”

MAXIL
(stiffly) “Please, Castellan! I might regenerate as a result of the mission I’ve been on. Have some respect.”

CASTELLAN
(bitterly) “Really? Well, I hope your new body and persona will be an improvement on your current one.”

MAXIL
(stiffly) “I’m curious as to how I’m about to regenerate. I was convinced I wouldn’t when Galvakon used the Prime Factor on me.”

CASTELLAN
“Why are you even holding back on it, Maxil? Why not just regenerate now?”

MAXIL
(stiffly) “I wanted to see how things were with your interrogation on Galvakon. In my current persona and body, I should at least witness that.”

CASTELLAN
(wryly) “Well, as you can see, it’s going rather well. Galvakon refuses to talk whenever we ask him questions. I’m fed up with it!” (sighs) “If there was only some way to make this interrogation easier.”

MAXIL
(stiffly) “You could always use the mind probe, Castellan.”

CASTELLAN
“What?” (intrigued) “Yes! The mind probe!”

SCENE #161 – EXT – STOCKBRIDGE, ENGLAND – DAY, NOON
Meanwhile in Stockbridge 2011, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy meet up with Maxwell Edison as they come to pick up Chester and Amanda from the Green Dragon inn.

MAX
(delighted) “Doctor! You’re back! You, Nyssa and Billy! I wondered if you were going to come back. It’s been two weeks since I last saw you.”

DOCTOR
(astonished) “Two weeks? Time flies! It’s almost as if it was two days ago.”

MAX
“You’re alright aren’t you, you three? I mean, everything went okay for you?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Max. Everything’s been sorted out. Mr. Lewis slash Galvakon has been defeated. We’ve saved the universe once again!”

NYSSA
“The android invasion of Earth was also repelled. The Kraals have been defeated too.”

BILLY
“And the Doctor’s destroyed the Prime Factor weapon. The Time Lords aren’t happy though.”

MAX
“What about that other person who was with you. Maxil – the grumpy one.”

DOCTOR
“Oh he’s not happy with me destroying the Prime Factor either, Max. He’s gone back to Gallifrey to sort out Galvakon’s trial.”

MAX
“Oh I see.”

DOCTOR
“How are things with you though, Max? Where are Chester and Amanda? I hope they’re alright.”

MAX
“Oh they’ve been okay. Chester’s shown Amanda the sights of Stockbridge and they went to the nearest town recently.”

DOCTOR
“What?”

MAX
“Don’t worry. I made sure I told them to be back before dusk every day.”

DOCTOR
“That’s not the issue, Max! Amanda and Chester can’t know anything about Earth’s future from where they stand! They come from the year nineteen fifty-seven, remember?”

MAX
(abjectly) “I don’t see why they shouldn’t have a look around in the nearest town. Besides, Chester’s not from Earth. He would’ve protected Amanda from tampering with anything she saw in her Earth’s future, wouldn’t he?”

DOCTOR
“It was a dangerous risk, Max! Amanda shouldn’t have seen what Earth’s future looked like before we took her back home to her own time. She could’ve been easily tempted to purchase medicines that would be too early for humanity’s development.”

MAX
“But she didn’t purchase any medicines, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Can I have that in writing, Max?”

NYSSA
(realises) “Wait! You said Chester had been showing Amanda around Stockbridge and the nearest town, Max. That means that…”

MAX
“Yes! Chester’s a lot better now. He recovered quicker than I anticipated. Within a week he returned to his happy self, so to speak.”

At that moment, Chester and Amanda come out of the Green Dragon inn to meet the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy as well as Max.

AMANDA
(realises) “Oh Chester! Look! They’ve come back for us! The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy! They’ve come back for us!”

CHESTER
“Oh goody! I’m glad to see them!”

AMANDA
(cheerfully) “Doctor; Nyssa; Billy! I second Chester! We’re both glad to see you three again!”

DOCTOR
(suspicious) “Hello Chester; Amanda. Everything alright between you two?”

AMANDA
“Yeah! Everything’s fine!” (to Chester) “Isn’t it, Chester?”

CHESTER
“Yeah! Everything’s fine!”

NYSSA
(pleased) “It’s good to see you, Amanda; Chester.” (to Chester) “I’m glad you’ve recovered, Chester.”

AMANDA
“Oh yes! Chester’s firing on all cylinders!” (to Chester) “Aren’t you, Chester?”

CHESTER
“Yes! Indeed I am! I can talk properly again!”

BILLY
“And your speed, Chester? Have you managed to get that back?”

CHESTER
(solemnly) “No. Sadly not. That’s one thing I miss now. I feel so sad.”

DOCTOR
“Sorry about that, Chester.” (Pause; lies) “I had to destroy the Prime Factor weapon with the twelve gemstones intact. It was for the best, I assure you. As a consequence, the gemstone of speed got destroyed.”

NYSSA
(whispers) “Doctor, you could [give…”]

DOCTOR
(whispers) “Trust me, Nyssa. It is better we don’t give him the speed gemstone. He doesn’t need it anyway.”

CHESTER
(unhappily) “How will I be able to cope without running fast anymore? I’m so sad about it.”

AMANDA
(reassuringly) “Don’t worry, Chester. I’ll help you. It’ll take some time to adjust to your loss, but I’m sure you’ll be able to cope. You won’t need to run so fast anymore like you used to do. I’ll be here to support you.”

CHESTER
(grimly) “Yeah. I suppose you’re right. Thanks, Amanda!”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “In the meantime, we have to get you back home, Chester.”

AMANDA
“What do you mean…back to Earth, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(to Amanda) “No, Amanda! Back to Cybeross! Chester’s father, Orion Prime, will be waiting for him.” (to Chester) “Won’t he, Chester?”

CHESTER
(slightly panics) “Wait! That’s not my real name! I’m not Chester Prime!”

DOCTOR
“Oh come on, Chester! The civil war is over now on your planet! It’s okay to drop the cover here!”

BILLY
“Wait! You mean to say…Chester Blurr isn’t his real name. His real name is…Chester Prime!”

NYSSA
“Of course! And the weapon we were dealing with was called the Prime Factor. That would explain the connection to his family and that he had the weapon inside him in the first place. For safe keeping on behalf of the family.”

DOCTOR
“Exactly, Nyssa! I’m glad you were able to work that one out so efficiently.”

NYSSA
“Now you’re just teasing me, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“As if I would, Nyssa.”

BILLY
“Should we be leaving now, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, yes, Of course.”

NYSSA
(to Max) “Thank you very much for looking after Chester and Amanda for us, Max. We really appreciate it whilst the Doctor, Billy and I have been away.”

MAX
(to Nyssa) “No problem, Nyssa. Always happy to help out.” (to Doctor) “Don’t leave it too long till the next time you see me in Stockbridge.”

DOCTOR
(to Max) “Oh I hope I won’t to leave it too long next time I come to Stockbridge, Max. Thank you very much.” (to Chester; Amanda) “Come on, Chester; Amanda! Let’s go and take you back to your respective homes.”

AMANDA
(pipes up) “Doctor!” (Pause) “I want to go with Chester! To Cybeross!”

NYSSA; BILLY
“What?”

DOCTOR
“What?”

AMANDA
(to Chester) “Is that alright with you, Chester? For me to go with you to your home planet. I want to see what it’s like.”

CHESTER
(gradually) “Yeah! Of course! I’m happy for you to come and see my home, Amanda. I would like you to meet my parents too!”

AMANDA
(pleased) “Splendid! Thanks, Chester.”

CHESTER
(to Doctor) “Is that alright with you, Doctor? To take Amanda with me back to my home planet Cybeross?”

NYSSA
“Is it alright with you, Doctor?”

BILLY
“Yeah. Will Amanda be alright going with Chester to Cybeross?”

MAX
(eagerly) “Come on, Doctor! What do you say? Yay or nay?”

A moment of silence ensues as the Doctor considers, uncertain.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Perhaps.” (Pause) “I’m not so sure about this arrangement.”

SCENE #162 – EXT – PLAYGROUND, CHURCHWOOD SCHOOL – DAY, AFTERNOON
Later on, at the real Churchwood School on Earth in 1957, young Billy reunites with his parents Enid and Fred. They’ve come to pick him up from school.

YOUNG BILLY
“Mum; Dad!”

ENID
(pleased) “Billy, my dear. I’m so pleased to see you again!”

FRED
(pleased) “Hello Billy! Long time no see hey, son? We said we’d come back and we did.”

YOUNG BILLY
“Mum; Dad! What’s been going on?”

ENID
“What? We don’t know what you’re talking about, dear?”

YOUNG BILLY
“Oh Mum; Dad! I’m so glad you’re back! I had the most horrendous week with a new headmaster named Mr. Lewis.”

ENID
(shocked) “Oh Billy! I’m so sorry to hear that!”

YOUNG BILLY
“But…I don’t remember what happened today. I don’t even know if Mr. Lewis is still around.”

FRED
“Well, here are your friends, Billy! Sean and Alexandra. They might be able to tell you what’s happened.”

Sean and Alexandra approach.

YOUNG BILLY
“Sean; Alexandra!”

SEAN
“Hey, Billy! What’s up?”

YOUNG BILLY
“Can you remember what’s just happened today? Where’s Mr. Lewis? Is he still here?”

ALEXANDRA
“Sean and I were talking about the same thing, Billy. We don’t know what’s been happening here either.”

SEAN
“Yeah. Mr. Lewis seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. And good riddance! I couldn’t stand that guy! He scared me and I wanted to punch his face in!”

ALEXANDRA
“Sean! Don’t talk like that!”

SEAN
“But it’s true!”

ALEXANDRA
“Billy, have you seen Chester and Amanda? They’re not around here either. Have they vanished too?”

YOUNG BILLY
“I’ve not seen Chester and Amanda at all. I don’t know what’s been going on here today.”

FRED
“Well, I’m sure the school staff will be able to track down their whereabouts.”

ENID
“It seems like you’ve been having a troubling time at school with this Mr. Lewis of yours, Billy.”

YOUNG BILLY
“Yes.” (Pause; to Alexandra) “I suppose if Mr. Lewis has gone, your dad will be temporary headmaster next, Alex. He is the deputy head after all and likely to take Mr. Lewis’ place. Until the other one has come out of hospital of course.”

ALEXANDRA
“Yes. I suppose he would be, wouldn’t he?”

SEAN
(teases) “Lucky you, Alex! Having your dad watching over you as the head of this dump.”

ALEXANDRA
(annoyed) “Oh shut up, Sean! Just shut up!”

ENID
“Now you two! Don’t go fighting with each other!”

At that moment, Uncle Brawn, Auntie Emily and Hannah turn up.

EMILY
“There he is, Brawny!”

BRAWN
(bellows) “Billy! Where have you been?”

YOUNG BILLY
“Oh no! It’s my Uncle Brawn! And Auntie Emily! And my cousin Hannah!”

BRAWN
“Come on, Billy! You’re supposed to come home with us! Come on now!”

FRED
(interjects) “It’s alright, Brawn! Enid and I are here! We’ll take Billy home!”

BRAWN
(dismissively) “Oh hello brother!”

ENID
“He does have a name, Brawn!”

BRAWN
“Yeah I know his name!” (to Billy) “Now come on, Billy! Let’s go home!”

FRED
(sighs; annoyed) “All these years and he’s forgotten my name.”

ENID
“Brawn, Fred just said! We’ll take him home!”

BRAWN
“No! He’s coming home with us! We had a contract! He was to stay home with us until the end of the week! It isn’t the end of the week yet!”

FRED
“We didn’t have a contract, Brawn. It’s not a business thing. It’s a family matter. And you’ve fulfilled it already.”

BRAWN
“Not where I’m standing! I insist he comes home with us before the end of the week is out!” (to Emily) “Isn’t that right, Emily?”

EMILY
“Yes Brawny.”

BRAWN
(to Hannah) “Isn’t that right, Hannah?”

HANNAH
“I want crisps!”

BRAWN
“Shut up!”

YOUNG BILLY
“Mum; Dad. I don’t want to go back with them. Please take me home away from these three!”

ENID
“Don’t worry, Billy. We’ll sort everything out.”

At that moment, a policeman turns up.

POLICEMAN
(to Brawn) “Excuse me! Are you Mr. Brawn Walker?”

BRAWN
“Err…yep! That’s him!”

FRED
(shocked) “What? Me?!”

YOUNG BILLY
“No, it isn’t! It’s you, Uncle Brawn!”

BRAWN
(angrily) “Shut up, Billy! Just shut up!”

POLICEMAN
(to Brawn) “Mr. Walker! I’m arresting you on the grounds of illegal business-making in this area! You; your wife and daughter!”

BRAWN
(shocked) “What?! No!”

ENID
“Serves you right, Brawn. Making out my husband was you!”

POLICEMAN
“You have the right to remain silent and anything you say will be taken down to be used as evidence in a court of law.”

BRAWN
“Don’t arrest me! Please don’t arrest me! It was my wife’s fault! She put me up to this!” (to Emily) “Didn’t you, Emily?”

EMILY
(sobs; upset) “Oh Brawny! What’s going to happen to us! Now that we’re going to be thrown in jail!”

BRAWN
(angrily) “Shut up, Emily! Shut up while I’m trying to make you take the blame instead of me!”

Emily and daughter Hannah both sob their hearts out whilst they’re upset.

BRAWN
“Shut up, you two! Just stop your crying, okay!”

Emily and Hannah keep crying as they and Brawn are taken away by the policeman. Young Billy, Enid, Fred, Sean and Alexandra watch as this commotion happens.

SCENE #163 – EXT – PLAYGROUND, CHURCHWOOD SCHOOL – DAY, AFTERNOON
Also watching the commotion nearby is the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy.

NYSSA
“So your Uncle Brawn, Auntie Emily and Hannah did get arrested like you said, Billy.”

BILLY
“Of course. Did you think I wasn’t telling you the truth?”

NYSSA
“No, of course not! It’s just, I didn’t realise it was on the same day you were returned back to Earth with no memory of what happened to you. On the last day of your terrible week with Mr. Lewis, your headmaster.”

BILLY
“Yeah well, it was a long time ago, Nyssa. You can’t expect me to remember everything, can you?”

DOCTOR
“Fuzzy memory does work like that, Nyssa. Bits and pieces often get fragmented when you’re at a young age like Billy was.”

NYSSA
“I suppose so. I just thought you Billy might have remembered reuniting with your parents and seeing your uncle, aunt and cousin getting arrested at the same time.”

BILLY
“Yeah, well, the fact that I did remember Uncle Brawn getting arrested after my terrible week at school ended says something. I didn’t realise that I reunited with Sean and Alexandra on that same day I reunited with my parents too.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, regarding Sean and Alexandra, Billy. You didn’t ask me about changing their futures when I blocked their memories of this day they had.”

BILLY
“No I didn’t. Should I have done, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“No, it’s just…I thought you might have. You had an ample opportunity to ask me to change their futures at the time I was blocking their memories. To prevent what would happen to them later in the future with the Dwaxi and everything else.”

BILLY
“Yeah but I don’t want you to do that, Doctor. I don’t wish it to happen. If you did that, it would’ve changed me meeting you and Nyssa years later. And I wouldn’t want that, would I?”

DOCTOR
(pleased) “No. No of course not. Good for you, Billy. I’m glad to hear you thinking like that.”

BILLY
“I’m happy where I am with you and Nyssa. Enjoying travelling in the TARDIS. I know it is awful what happened to Sean and Alexandra later on in their lives after going to school with them. But…I’m better off than they are. And I wouldn’t want it any other way. No matter how much I want their lives to be better and different from mine.”

NYSSA
(happily) “I’m pleased you still don’t regret travelling with us, Billy.”

BILLY
“Indeed not. Meeting you two at that railway station in Huttle all that time ago was the happiest day of my life.”

Nyssa and Billy then kiss each other.

DOCTOR
“Yes, well, now it’s time I think we got on our way. Don’t you think?”

NYSSA
“Doctor? What about Chester and Amanda? Are you sure they’ll be alright after we left them on Cybeross?”

DOCTOR
“Of course I am. Chester said his people will return Amanda back to Earth once he’s shown her around his planet. So I’ll take his word on that.”

NYSSA
(unconvinced) “Really, Doctor?”

BILLY
(unconvinced) “Yes! Really, Doctor?”

A moment of silence ensues. The Doctor then makes to leave.

DOCTOR
“Come on, Nyssa; Billy! Back to the TARDIS we go!”

Nyssa and Billy watch the Doctor go.

BILLY
“He’s not going to answer that is he, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“No Billy. I don’t think he is.” (Pause) “Come on! Let’s catch up with him!”

They follow him back to the TARDIS. As Nyssa and Billy follow the Doctor, they don’t notice they’re being watched by a dark figure in the shadows.

SALVADOR
(menacingly) “Enjoy your victory while it lasts, Doctor. You may have outwitted the Time Lords and the oppressors of Cybeross. But I, Salvador, am still around. You may have tried to banish me. But I am still watching!”

SCENE #164 – EXT – SWANSEA BEACH, SWANSEA – DAY, MORNING
Sometime later, on Swansea beach in 1930, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are sitting on deck-chairs. They enjoy the sunshine. 1930s jazz music echoes in the background.

NYSSA
“Doctor, are you sure about Tegan when we left her in Cardiff two thousand and twelve?”

DOCTOR
“Oh Nyssa please! Stop worrying about it! We’re on holiday, remember?”

NYSSA
“No seriously, Doctor. Just one more concern in this whole endeavour and that’s it. Are you sure Tegan will be alright?”

DOCTOR
“Yes Nyssa, I’m sure. We checked up on her when we went back to Cardiff in two thousand and twelve, didn’t we?”

BILLY
“Yeah. She looked rather forlorn after losing the love of her life, didn’t she? When she was looking out at the bay waters.”

DOCTOR
“She’ll get over it! Don’t be like Nyssa, Billy!”

BILLY
“But Doctor, we can’t just leave her like that. We are partly responsible for her losing Roger Lewis Galvakon, even though she’s better off where she is.”

DOCTOR
“I checked her biography in the TARDIS databanks for your information, Billy.”

NYSSA
“Isn’t that rather dodgy, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Don’t start, Nyssa! Anyway, it said that she would later meet up with another man in her life. Don’t know who as I didn’t want to go into too many details. But she does end up happy, doesn’t she?”

NYSSA
“Are you sure about that, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Oh come on, Nyssa! We saw her happy with her man when we fast-forwarded a few years after the Galvakon incident. Now please, you two! We’re supposed to be on holiday, aren’t we? Sitting out on deck chairs on Swansea beach in nineteen thirty, hearing jazz music in the background. Please try and enjoy it! If not for me then for Billy’s sake please!”

NYSSA
“Alright, alright. Sorry, Doctor. I just want to make sure you’re satisfied with how things have turned out.”

DOCTOR
“I am. Believe me, I am.” (Pause) “And I couldn’t have done it without your help, you two.”

BILLY
“Oh! Well, thanks, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(sincerely) “I really mean that! You two have been really good helping out in this crisis to save the universe. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

NYSSA
“Well, it wasn’t just us, was it? There were also other Doctors and companions who pitched in.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, less said about that the better in my opinion. I don’t want to know too much about my future as well as the past. Time can still be in flux for me.”

BILLY
“But it all worked out fine didn’t it, Doctor? With the other Doctors and companions pitching in.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, I suppose it did.” (Pause) “But thank you to you two anyway. I couldn’t have solved this crisis without you.”

NYSSA
“That’s alright, Doctor. I’m glad you appreciated our support.”

BILLY
“Thank you for taking me back in time to solve the mystery of my bad week in school, Doctor. I really appreciate you doing that for me.”

DOCTOR
“No problem, Billy. Always glad to help a friend out. Even if it included making him have a nightmare in the first place.”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy laugh at that.

BILLY
“There were some nice companions you had, Doctor. Both past and future. Jo; Ace; Jamie; Zoe. Even Corporal James…sorry, Private James was a surprise to see. I hadn’t realised he was one of your companions.”

DOCTOR
“I didn’t either until I met up with myself again, Billy. I always do have good company in the TARDIS. Very often, it’s good tastes.”

NYSSA
“It was nice to meet Amy and Rory when we met them at that Intergalactic Restaurant, wasn’t it? They seemed alike to us being a romantic couple in the TARDIS. Weren’t they, Billy?”

BILLY
“Yes. I suppose they were, weren’t they?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Is that what you wish us to be like, Billy? Happily married. And still travelling in the TARDIS with the Doctor. After what we discussed whilst sitting watching the Doctor playing cricket earlier on.”

BILLY
“I’m not…ready to rush into it, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“No, no. Of course not.”

BILLY
(gradually) “But it is a pleasant thought, isn’t it?”

NYSSA
(gradually; happily) “Yes. Yes it is, isn’t it?”

A moment of tender silence ensues.

BILLY
“I can tell you now that being with you two has been the happiest time of my life. Even though we’ve faced many dangers, I still enjoy being with you Doctor and you Nyssa. Travelling in the TARDIS; fighting monsters and seeing new worlds and such.”

DOCTOR
“I’m glad to hear that, Billy.”

NYSSA
“Yes so am I. And we’re glad to have you around, Billy.”

BILLY
“I wonder if we’ll be having adventures for a long while yet, despite seeing the futures you have, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“I’m not sure, Billy.” (Pause) “We can make it last while we can. Make the most of it.”

BILLY
“Yes. Of course.” (Pause; to Nyssa) “Thank you, Nyssa. For being you. And the best thing that ever happened to me.”

NYSSA
(happily) “Thank you, Billy.”

Nyssa and Billy kiss.

BILLY
(to Doctor) “And thank you for being you too, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Of course, Billy.”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy continue to sit out on deck chairs on Swansea beach whilst enjoying their holiday.

BILLY (V’O)
(narrates) “And that’s about it really! We saved the universe once again as a threesome and enjoyed watching the waves crashing onto the beach in Swansea nineteen thirty. I couldn’t have wished for better company than my girlfriend Nyssa and our best friend the Doctor. I never ever wanted it to end.”
