‘The Railway of Time’, Part Three, Chapter 12

Macorinroth

12. The Revelation

SCENE #121 – INT – CAVE TUNNEL, VEGRON BASE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
Back in the cave tunnel, where the Doctor and Adams saved Thomas and Percy, the passengers that have been saved are all gathered in the cave tunnel. The passengers chatter amongst themselves whilst Thomas and Percy try to quieten them down.

THOMAS
(raises voice) “Quiet everyone, please!”

PERCY
(raises voice) “Yes! Quiet everyone! Otherwise those lizard monsters will hear you and catch you again!”

Most of the passengers quieten down, though there are still a few muttering away. The Doctor and Adams debate what to do next.

ADAMS
“What are we going to do now, Doctor? We can’t just stay here with these passengers nattering away!”

DOCTOR
“I am aware of that, Mr. Adams.”

ADAMS
(impatiently) “Well let’s do something! Let’s just not think about it!”

DOCTOR
“Hold on a minute!” (thinks) “We’re just going to have to move on from here and head off down the passageway and find the transmat system! Hopefully Nyssa and Billy should be there!”

ADAMS
(anxiously) “But what if they’re not there, sir? What happens if we get there and we find ourselves caught up by those scaly things?”

DOCTOR
“You always have to think the worst, don’t you Mr. Adams!”

ADAMS
“You can’t be too sure of being aware of certain risks!”

DOCTOR
“You know, I still haven’t called you by your first name by the way!”

ADAMS
“So you think we should head for the teleport thing?”

DOCTOR
“I don’t see why not. Nyssa should have improved the transmat system with the right modifications to get all the passengers back!”

ADAMS
“And if not?”

DOCTOR
“Well…we’ll just have to try it the safer way! It’ll still take time but…”

ADAMS
“But that means we’ll get caught! And we won’t have much chance of success!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t be so pessimistic, Mr. Adams! Let’s just make our way now to the transmat and start from there! By then, we should be able to succeed! In any case, we’ve still got these guns. But why we should really need them, I don’t know!”

ADAMS
“Alright! We’ll do it your way!”

The Doctor then steps forward.

DOCTOR
“Right! Mr. Percy! Mr. Thomas! Tell these passengers to move forward and follow me! We’re going back to the transmat! Come on!”

The Doctor and Adams walk on ahead whilst Thomas and Percy instruct the passengers.

THOMAS
“Right everybody, come on! Follow the Doctor!”

PERCY
“Yes that’s right! Follow the man in the cream coat! We’re taking you home now!”

The passengers move on as they follow after the Doctor and Mr. Adams as they make their way to the transmat. They walk down the passageway, with Thomas and Percy taking the rear.

SCENE #122 – INT – TRANSMAT CENTRE, VEGRON BASE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
A while later, the Doctor, Adams, Thomas, Percy and the passengers arrive at where the transmat centre is. The Doctor and Adams enter in first to observe the detail of the place whilst Thomas and Percy keep their passengers together and tell them to keep quiet.

DOCTOR
“Here we are! And thankfully no Vegrons in the way, which is odd concerning the fact they’re supposed to be after us!”

ADAMS
(agitated) “See! What did I tell you? The boy and the girl aren’t here! They’ve been captured!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t say that, Mr. Adams! You shouldn’t jump to conclusions like that!”

ADAMS
(annoyed) “Then where are they for heaven’s sake?”

DOCTOR
“Well perhaps Nyssa finished with the modifications and she and Billy went to look for us!”

ADAMS
“They might have been considerate in telling us! Anyway you don’t know that they’re…”

DOCTOR
(raises voice) “Mr. Adams, if you would please! I’m trying to get these people back home! And if you would let me get on with doing that particular responsibility then we’ll all be happy! So help me with the transmat system, okay!”

ADAMS
(startled) “Yes Doctor. Alright.”

They make their way to the transmat control panel, as the Doctor checks the readings to see how well it can cope with a large transport.

DOCTOR
“The variance field has expanded! And the cylinders are fully charged! Nyssa’s done her work! Good” (Pause) “Ah…the power levels are still faulty with the system alterations!”

ADAMS
“Is that bad?”

DOCTOR
“Well it’s just a matter of balancing the matter-transfer capacity in terms of the number of people with the variance durance with the transmat in order to avoid a system malfunction or overload!” (Pause) “I’ll have to send the passengers twenty at a time!”

ADAMS
“But that might take forever!”

DOCTOR
(casually) “Then I suggest we get started!”

ADAMS
“But…”

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Will you…please ask Mr. Thomas and Mr. Percy to send the first twenty passengers in, please?!”

ADAMS
“Oh very well!” (to Thomas; Percy) “Hey! You two! Send the first twenty passengers in here!”

THOMAS
“Very good Mr. Adams!”

PERCY
(roughly) “Right! First twenty passengers in! Come on! Get on with it!”

THOMAS
(shocked) “Percy! There’s no need to be so rough with them!”

PERCY
“Sorry.”

As the first twenty passengers are  sent in, the family from “Part Two”, Paul; Sue; Mary and Jane are among them.

MARY
“Dad? Are we going home now?”

PAUL
“Of course we are, girl!”

JANE
“Are you sure we should trust these two! They hypnotised us remember!”

PAUL
“I know. But we’d better trust them now since they tell us we’re going back home!” (to Sue) “What’s for tea, Sue?”

SUE
“Shepherd’s Pie, potatoes and vegetables, love!”

PAUL
(cheers) “Ooh great!”

MARY
(to Jane) “That man, Jane. In the yellow coat!”

JANE
“Yeah! He’s dishy isn’t he?”

The passengers enter onto the transmat pad as they are ready to be teleported back to Thursdan.

SCENE #123 – INT – THRONE ROOM, VEGRON BASE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
In the Vegron throne room, we hear the door opening as the Vegron general enters to address Domus Clag and Sinclair who are sitting in their throne room chairs.

VEGRON GENERAL
“Your Excellency! The boy and the girl are outside!”

DOMUS CLAG
“Good. Show them in general!”

VEGRON GENERAL
“Yes, Excellency!”

The Vegron General summons the guards, as they bring in Nyssa and Billy who are escorted into the throne room. They stand before Domus Clag with Sinclair.

DOMUS CLAG
“My dear young lady Nyssa! How nice of you come back!”

NYSSA
(wryly) “The pleasure’s all mine!”

SINCLAIR
“And you’ve brought Mr. Walker, I see. How nice to see you again, Billy. You look as young as ever.”

BILLY
“I can’t really say I’m pleased to see you, Miss Sinclair.”

SINCLAIR
“Oh come on! Let’s not go into disagreements.”

DOMUS CLAG
“Indeed let’s not. For we have a special thing for you to do.”

NYSSA
“And what may that be, out of total disinterest.”

DOMUS CLAG
“The Vegrons need a power source to boost their journey back to Vegros in order to complete the formation of the new Vegron empire. How we have that power source is of no interest to you!”

SINCLAIR
“But we have a component that needs fixing and adjusting in order to ensure the transition of the spatial jump from Earth to Vegros is achievable! As I explained to his Excellency according to my specifications!”

DOMUS CLAG
“And I put my trust in your specifications entirely, Miss Sinclair.”

BILLY
“And what has this got to do with us?”

SINCLAIR
“We require a Vegron plasma initiator to authorise the spatial jump. So we have here as you can see in my hand an electrocardiographic interface to generate the amount of spatial molecules to transport the entire Vegron base onto the Vegron home planet.”

NYSSA
(surprised) “You use bio-electronics in your spatial transfer methods?”

SINCLAIR
“I see that you’re a bio-electronics yourself, Miss Nyssa!”

Nyssa is silent, ashamed of giving herself away.

BILLY
“How do you expect your plan to land this…dun hole of a base onto a planet in a thrice! I mean…I may not know much about…bio-electronics and spatial transfer but…it sounds ridiculous!”

DOMUS CLAG
“You’re right sir! You don’t know much about bio-electronic and spatial transfer or anything about what my dear bride-to-be has achieved!”

BILLY
(sardonic) “I’m amazed you have such faith in her.”

NYSSA
“Billy has a point! The spatial transfer of one new empire from one planet to another is colossal! You need a million fathoms of energy to make your transfer procedure possible!”

SINCLAIR
“That’s where you two come in! With your help in adjusting this interface I have the energy increase on the transfer will enable us to make this transfer possible. And with the equipment of temporal engineering I have at my disposal…”

DOMUS CLAG
(finishes) “…Vegros will have a new leader! Me! Along with my faithful and beautiful consort!”

BILLY
(whispers; to Nyssa) “Do they really mean what they say? Can they actually move their base onto another planet in seconds?”

NYSSA
“At the moment it’s implausible! But they do happen to have the advantage with us to make their plans work!”

Moment of silence, as Billy ponders on Nyssa’s theories.

SINCLAIR
“So…if you two would take this interface and fix it for me!”

BILLY
(challengingly) “You don’t actually think we’re going to do what you want us to do, do you?”

SINCLAIR
“Oh please! Let’s not have vulgar threats! Let’s just say I shall destroy planet Earth instantly if you refuse to co-operate!” (Pause) “I can even have the guards kill one of you in order to persuade you to do what I say. Now how romantic is that? Which will it be? Will it be the girl to persuade you, Billy? Or will it be the boy to persuade you, Nyssa…?”

NYSSA
(frustrated) “Alright! We’ll do what you ask!”

SINCLAIR
(smirks) “Splendid!” (to Billy) “Here! Take this interface for me, Mr. Walker. Pass it to your friend Miss Nyssa so that you can start!”

Billy reluctantly takes the interface from Sinclair and hands it over to Nyssa,  to which she reluctantly takes.

NYSSA
“We will need some tools!”

DOMUS CLAG
“My guards will see to it that the tools will be brought in instantly!”

The guards make their way out of the throne room to do Domus Clag’s bidding, whilst Nyssa and Billy whisper to each other.

NYSSA
“We’ll have to work on this interface Billy in order to give the Doctor time to get here!”

BILLY
“Yes, but for all we know it may be too late!”

NYSSA
“It might not come to that Billy.” (Pause) “Now I’ll need you to help me with this!”

BILLY
(surprised) “Me?”

NYSSA
“Yes you. You seem good with handling technical items such as cameras. You are a photographer, you know.”

BILLY
(uncomfortable) “Yes, but I’m not that clever! Not clever enough to know about things as this. Heck, I can’t even understand the science of it.”

NYSSA
“I need you to help me! Don’t worry I have faith in you!”

BILLY
(gradually) “Well…I’ll do what I can! I can’t guarantee anything!”

NYSSA
(focused) “We better get started then! Now…let’s see what the problem is.”

Nyssa opens the interface covering, whilst Domus Clag and Sinclair observe her and Billy working on fixing and adjusting the device with new modifications.

SCENE #124 – INT – TRANSMAT CENTRE, VEGRON BASE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
A while later back in the transmat centre, the transmat pads are activated as the Doctor sends another group of twenty passengers through. The transmat beam slowly dies away as it finishes its process of sending the passengers through, without causing an overload.

DOCTOR
“That’s another twenty! A hundred and forty passengers have now gone through.”

THOMAS
(anxiously) “But we’ve still got about another thousand or more so to go, Doctor!”

PERCY
“We’ll be here all day by the time we get ourselves through the transmat to drive these passengers home!”

ADAMS
“Come on Doctor! This is pointless! You’ve got to send the whole lot through!”

DOCTOR
“I can’t! Not without causing an overload to the system which will cause permanent damage!”

ADAMS
“Never mind the permanent damage; it’s the permanent patience I can’t contend with! Look! For all we know those Vegrons might come after us!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! I know!”

ADAMS
“So therefore we need to get everyone onto that pad so that we can all get back to Thursdan before getting caught!”

DOCTOR
(raises his voice) “Mr. Adams! I’m trying to save lives here!”

ADAMS
(sardonically) “Well you’re not doing much good with that now are you?!”

The Doctor, frustrated at having to reason with Adams, soon hears a faint snarling and growling in the distance. This frightens the passengers as well as Adams, Thomas and Percy as they hear it too.

THOMAS
(worried) “Doctor! Those monsters are coming!”

PERCY
“I think they’ve got their dogs with them!”

This is confirmed by a few barks and growls from the Zegors a fair distance away.

ADAMS
(insistent) “Come on Doctor! Let’s take a gamble and send all the passengers onto the transmat! Including me, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Percy!”

THOMAS
“I agree!”

PERCY
“Me too!”

DOCTOR
“I can’t!”

ADAMS
“Why not, man?!”

DOCTOR
(angrily) “I don’t like to send people off to their deaths!”

ADAMS
(retorts) “You’re sending everybody to their deaths! Never mind the overloads! Just send us all through!”

DOCTOR
(raises his voice) “Don’t you understand, Mr. Adams?! If I send all of you through, this transmat will blow up and there won’t be any guarantee that the transfer will be complete and successful! As far as I’m and the transmat computer-banks are concerned, you will have all been dead! I can’t send you all in, press the button and take that risk! I just can’t!”

Moment of silence. Adams then steps forward.

ADAMS
“Then I’ll do it! Tell me which buttons to press and I’ll do it!”

DOCTOR
(wearily) “Mr. Adams…”

ADAMS
(to Thomas; Percy) “Send the rest of the passengers onto that pad, you two! Then I want you two to go on!” (Pause) “I’ll join you once the Doctor shows me what to do!”

THOMAS
“Yes Mr. Adams, sir.”

PERCY
(to passengers) “Come on everyone! On board the blue pad! Come on!”

The passengers are escorted into the transmat centre and led to stand on top of the pad where they are waiting to be teleported. Thomas and Percy eventually join them. The Doctor and Adams meanwhile face each other with serious confrontation.

DOCTOR
“Mr. Adams! Do you realise that if you sent yourself through that transmat with the rest of those people, they may not see the light of day again! You won’t see the light of day again!”

ADAMS
(reluctant) “I’m willing to die anyway! Admittedly I would like to see my Alice again! But I would rather die before seeing my tombstone in Kelton again!”

DOCTOR
“I can’t take the responsibility!”

ADAMS
“But I can! Just tell me what to do.”

Moment of silence, as the Doctor contemplates on what to do now.

DOCTOR
“I’ll help you! I’ll just increase the variance fields to make the transfer protocols compatible, and then you can press the button to initiate the transfer.”

ADAMS
(hesitant) “That’s fine by me!”

The Doctor presses some switches on the control panel as he sets up the adjustments of the transfer of all of the passengers with Thomas, Percy and Adams aboard. The Doctor finishes, as he stands back from the control panel.

DOCTOR
(grimly) “You can press the red button now.”

ADAMS
(reluctant) “Thank you Doctor!”

Adams makes his way round behind the control panel where the Doctor is at, as he’s about to press the red button.

DOCTOR
“I’ve set a ten second delay for the transfer to be initiated. So you’ll have time to get aboard the pad once the teleport begins.”

ADAMS
(grimly) “Good.”

Adam is about to press button before turning to the Doctor.

ADAMS
“Goodbye Doctor. Thank you for everything.”

DOCTOR
“Good luck, Mr. Adams!”

ADAMS
“May I shake your hand?”

Both the Doctor and Adams shake hands as they say farewell to each other. The roars and growls of the Vegrons and Zegors get closer from outside.

PERCY
(impatient) “Come on! The monsters are coming!”

THOMAS
(tells him off) “Percy! That’s enough!”

Adams eventually turns to the control panel and immediately presses the red button which starts the transfer process.

ADAMS
“There you are Doctor! I pressed the button!”

DOCTOR
(insistent) “Well go on man! On board!”

ADAMS
“Oh right!”

Adams run forward as the passengers are hastening him to get aboard.

THOMAS
“Come on Mr. Adams!”

PERCY
“That’s right! Get aboard!”

Adams eventually gets himself onto the pad before it’s about to make transference.

ADAMS
“It’s alright Doctor! I’m aboard now!”

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Good luck!”

The glow comes all over the passengers, Adams, Thomas and Percy, but is much louder as the teleport variance is bigger than before. Once the teleport has been initiated, the control panel explodes and the Doctor falls back from the panel as he is almost struck by a spark. The teleport soon dies down with the glowing sound, whilst the control panel is blown up entirely.

DOCTOR
(grimly) “Completely useless now! I only hope that Adams and the others managed to survive!”

Just then, the Vegrons with their Zegor pets come round the corner and enter as they find the Doctor standing there. They snarl and growl as they enter.

VEGRON COMMANDER
“Stay right where you are!”

DOCTOR
(casually) “Oh good afternoon! Or is it morning, evening or night? It’s hard to tell down in these caves!”

VEGRON COMMANDER
“What have you done to the transmat system?”

DOCTOR
(laughs) “Yes! It’s a bit of a mess, isn’t it?”

The Doctor then takes something out from his pocket.

DOCTOR
“Oh! Do your Zegors like cricket balls?”

VEGRON COMMANDER
(angrily) “Cricket balls?!”

DOCTOR
“Yes.” (to Zegors) “Here boys! Fetch!”

The Zegors growl as the Doctor throws his cricket ball. The Zegors scramble over to the ground as they compete for the ball. The Doctor manages to escape under the Vegrons wing as they makes to leave. The Vegrons see him and chase after him.

VEGRON COMMANDER
(growls) “After him!”

SCENE #125 – INT – WALKWAY, VEGRON BASE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
The Doctor  runs only a short distance away from the transmat centre, before he is caught again by Vegron soldiers who surround him. They snarl and growl as they close in on him.

DOCTOR
(casually) “Oh sorry about that! I still have a few cricket balls if your dogs would like to have them! Anyway, must fly!”

VEGRON GENERAL
“Stop!”

The Vegron General approaches as he steps forward to meet the Doctor

VEGRON GENERAL
“You are to come to the throne room where you will find your young friends with his Excellency and Miss Sinclair.”

DOCTOR
“My young friends!?”

VEGRON GENERAL
“Yes!”

DOCTOR
“Well, why didn’t you say so?! Just where I was heading! If you would be so kind as to take me there, I’d very much appreciate it!”

VEGRON GENERAL
(to Vegron soldiers) “Make sure, he doesn’t try to escape!”

DOCTOR
(charmingly) “Oh how very kind of you!”

The Doctor is soon escorted away as the Vegrons take him to see Domus Clag and Sinclair with Nyssa and Billy in the throne room.

SCENE #126 – INT – THRONE ROOM, VEGRON BASE  – DAY – SUMMER 2163
Back in the throne room, Nyssa and Billy have managed to fix the interface for Sinclair and Domus Clag, as Nyssa closes up the interface panel.

SINCLAIR
“Have you finished?”

NYSSA
(grimly) “Yes.”

SINCLAIR
“Excellent! Give it to me, dear girl!”

Nyssa hands the device over to Sinclair, which she takes with great delight. Just then, the Vegron throne room doors open inward as the Doctor is being escorted by the Vegron General.

VEGRON GENERAL
“Your Excellency! I have found the Doctor!”

DOMUS CLAG
(pleased) “Well done, General! You shall be rewarded!”

The Doctor approaches Nyssa and Billy.

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Nyssa! I’m glad to see you’re alright! And you too Billy!”

BILLY
“Thanks Doctor.”

NYSSA
(apologetic) “Doctor, I’m so sorry! They asked me and Billy to help with fixing their interface for initiating the transfer to their home planet! They now have a winning chance!”

The Doctor ponders on what Nyssa says for a while, before approaching Domus Clag and Sinclair.

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “It’s all over, your Excellency! The plans for your new Vegron empire are finished! Not that I believed it would work anyway!”

DOMUS CLAG
(appalled) “How dare you insult my consort’s intelligence?! Miss Sinclair has performed academically…”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Oh believe me; I wouldn’t dare insult Miss Sinclair’s intelligence!” (Pause) “But I do believe you’re blind!”

DOMUS CLAG
(shocked) “I? Blind?”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “Yes! Blind to Miss Sinclair’s charms!” (Pause) “Do you seriously believe she would want to help you with your plans for your new empire? What would she want from that? Have you ever asked her why she is helping you?” (Pause) “You’ve never even considered it have you, Excellency!?”

DOMUS CLAG
“I trust her word!”

DOCTOR
(sharply) “She’s been using you, Domus Clag!”

DOMUS CLAG
(apprehensive) “Nonsense! Miss Sinclair has been kindly helping me with arranging all of this! I’ve known her for far longer than you have, and now we’ve been able to develop a good working and personal relationship, we have finally reached the point where we’ve found each other. We are going to get married, and that will be the greatest thing to happen for my new glorious Vegron empire!” (Pause; to Sinclair) “Isn’t that right, my darling?”

Moment of silence.

SINCLAIR
“You’re right, Doctor! His Excellency Domus Clag has been of great use to me! All that I’ve arranged is finally coming together!”

DOMUS CLAG
(shocked) “What?!” (Pause) “Gill, my darling! I don’t understand!”

SINCLAIR
(cruelly) “Of course you don’t Clag! You never do understand! I only required the use of your Vegrons in order to help me achieve my purpose. Now that I’ve been able to utilise your resources, I’m finally on the verge of winning!”

DOMUS CLAG
(flabbergasted) “But…my new empire! We…we were going to get married!”

SINCLAIR
(laughs) “Do you really expect me to fall for you like that? A worthless, pitiless wretch like you?!”

DOMUS CLAG
(protests) “But you said yes!”

SINCLAIR
“Of course I said yes! I had to in order to get your attention! To gain my control over you!”

DOMUS CLAG
“But…”

SINCLAIR
“And now! I shall require your services even further! Only this time, it will mean complete and unquestioning control!”

Sinclair takes out a gadget and uses it on Domus Clag.

DOMUS CLAG
“No!”

There is then a whirring sound and Domus Clag writhes in pain as he goes under some sudden shock and trance. The Vegron General moves forward and calls to his troops.

VEGRON GENERAL
“Guards! Protect his Excellency!”

SINCLAIR
(laughs) “Oh no, general! I haven’t forgotten you and your troops! I shall require your help as well!”

DOCTOR
(cries) “No! Don’t!”

But Sinclair is determined, as she uses her gadget on the Vegron General and his troops as she did on Domus Clag. They all go under some trance, writhing in pain. The Vegrons including the General and Domus Clag become silent.

SINCLAIR
“Excellent! Glad all my Vegrons were wearing those straps with diamonds on their wrists! Special invention of mine!”

BILLY
(shocked; baffled) “What’s happened to them?”

NYSSA
They’ve all gone into a trance! Just like when those two train drivers were put into a trance!”

SINCLAIR
“Oh I still need them…even now! For my chance to return home is even greater than I can have possibly imagined!”

DOCTOR
(insistently) “And what is home?”

SINCLAIR
(slowly) “Home…is where the greatest of brothers…the greatest of sisters…who have lived longer than any other inferior being of this universe has ever existed!”

NYSSA
“That’s such a cruel superiority complex!”

SINCLAIR
“Do not try to oppose me, young lady! For you are speaking to one of the greatest and mightiest of species ever to walk the stars!” (proudly) “Yes! The greatest…and mightiest!”

Sinclair then stands upright as she is about to reveal herself to the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy who are completed absorbed by her transformation.

BILLY
“What is she doing? Her face!”

NYSSA
(shocked) “That’s not her face! It’s a mask!”

Sinclair pulls her face wide apart, like the sound of paper being torn apart. She reveals her true identity before them. She makes a slithering and hissing sound, and as she is about to speak her voice is distorted and harsh.

SINCLAIR
(triumphantly confident) “I am Sinroth! Long live the Macorinroth!”

Moment of long silence, as the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy take in what they see as Sinclair/Sinroth stands before them.

SINCLAIR
“You don’t seem surprised to see what I look like, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“No I don’t as a matter of fact! Sorry if I’m disappointing you!”

NYSSA
“You know what she is?”

DOCTOR
“Oh yes!” (to Sinclair) “I’ve met someone like you before. But he was green!”

SINCLAIR
(annoyed) “No! That’s a Jagoroth! I’m not a Jagoroth! I’m a Macorinroth! A completely different species!”

DOCTOR
(wryly) “Oh yes! Completely different! An alien with one eye! And blue skin! Ransacking the treasures of the universe!” (Pause) “Just what do you think you’re doing here with the Vegrons?”

SINCLAIR
“My trading negotiations with the Vegrons were interrupted by some attack cruiser. I crash-landed on Earth in eighteen sixty before I was able to come up with a strategy to use trains as a measure for temporal transfer. All I’ve told you about my dealings with the Vegrons is true!”

NYSSA
“But what do you want with three time zones. And with humans.”

SINCLAIR
“Ah the slave empire was enough to get what I wanted from the Vegrons. Believe me, humans are the least of my concerns! Such inferior species!”

BILLY
“I heard that!”

SINCLAIR
“Thank you! I’m so glad you did!”

DOCTOR
“But what were the time zones all about? It’s not just about…” (thinks; realising) “Oh of course! How silly of me!”

NYSSA
“What Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa) “You were fixing an interface, right?”

NYSSA
“Right.”

DOCTOR
“An interface will generate a boost of energy! A huge amount of energy” (to Sinclair) “You’re hoping to use the three time zones, nineteen sixty-three, twenty sixty-three and twenty-one sixty-three; as a means of measure to boost a space jump across millions of miles back to your home planet! Am I right?”

SINCLAIR
(gradually) “You certainly are well informed, Doctor. I’m surprised I didn’t have you as my assistant in my plans.”

DOCTOR
(casually) “Oh…I wouldn’t make a proposal of marriage to you even if you did choose me. Which wouldn’t really be nice?”

BILLY
(confused) “But how could she use three time zones to create the jump she wants?”

SINCLAIR
(sharply)She…has sent agents to the three different time zones I’ve specified. Those agents will evidently place time bombs near the links where the transfer of time-jumps occur for the train express to travel through. So if a train was travelling from Huttle to Kelton and from Kelton to Thursdan, the agents will make sure that those time zones will be cornered off and seen to that they explode!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “And that will release emissions of time-wave energy that would be colossal from three time zones, destroying and wiping out of Earth’s history, causing the time distortion effect!”

SINCLAIR
“And my journey back home to Macorin will be assured!”

NYSSA
(protests) “You can’t do this! You’ll be killing thousands of people!”

BILLY
“Not to mention making a mess of people’s calendars!”

SINCLAIR
“My plans have been fully worked out! This is a once in a life-time opportunity for me! I have overseen every aspect of my life in each of the various time zones, and I shall see to it that I will achieve this mission in order for me to get back home!”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “Whatever happens, Sinroth, I’m going to stop this madness of yours!”

SINCLAIR
(coyly) “Oh such threats, Doctor! And I shall warn you now that I deal with threats very seriously if you don’t reconsider and stop interfering with my plans!”

DOCTOR
“I beg you, Sinroth! Do not carry out this madness! It could destroy this entire planet!”

SINCLAIR
(harshly) “And what do I care about this little pathetic planet!”

DOCTOR
“If that’s your attitude, then I am going to stop you!”

SINCLAIR
(determined) “Then I will have to shoot you first!”

BILLY
(shocked) “Doctor! She’s got a gun!”

SINCLAIR
“That’s right! And as you’ll see it is pointing straight at the Doctor’s head!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Doctor! Get down!”

SINCLAIR
(jeers) “Goodbye, Doctor!”

But before Sinroth opens fire on the Doctor and friends, there is the shimmering and whooshing sound in the Vegron throne room. All four are astonished and amazed as they see the TARDIS arriving.

DOCTOR
(amazed) “Look!”

NYSSA
(amazed) “The TARDIS! The TARDIS is here!”

BILLY
(baffled) “Where did that come from?”

SINCLAIR
(irritated) “What is this…intrusion?”

They watch as the TARDIS materialises, making a thumping sound as it lands. Moment of silence.

NYSSA
(astonished) “There can’t be someone in there surely!”

Just then, the door opens.

BILLY
(anticipates) “No wait! Look! There’s someone coming out!” (Pause) “Hey..?”

DOCTOR
(disbelieving) “What the…?”

They look as three people step out of the TARDIS. It is the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy.

SINCLAIR
(irritated) “What is this meaning of this?”

DOCTOR (2)
(cheerfully; to Sinroth) “Hello Sinroth! Been quite a while hasn’t it!” (concerned) “Oh dear. This is a problem.”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “I agree!”

NYSSA (2)
“Doctor, that’s me!”

NYSSA
(shocked) “And that’s me!”

BILLY
(shocked) “I must be going mad!”

BILLY (2)
“Me too! I’m seeing double!”

DOCTOR; DOCTOR (2)
“This is going to get very confusing!”

NYSSA; NYSSA (2)
“Oh no!”

BILLY; BILLY (2)
“Oh dear!”

    Hi Tim

I enjoyed reading Part Three very much. The story is really racing along now, and all that dashing about in the caves is very reminiscent of the era, isn’t it?

Aha! Now I know about Sinclair! Very cunning! That was a big surprise.

I suspected Domus Clag was about to get his come-uppance, and he certainly got straightened out, didn’t he!

I like that the characters who are the main narrative points of the story are being really well developed; Adams, and Billy in particular. They’re good characters, with real human frailties, which makes the story development very believable. I really like that Mr Adams has come to accept some of what has happened to him, and is making the best of it. All the characters are very well-rounded and their dialogue is very clearly differentiated between the different character types.

Very exciting stuff, Tim. I’m looking forward to Part Four, and seeing what happens. The cliffhanger to Part Three was very exciting, and it will be good to see how it all gets wrapped up in the right time order in Part Four!

Great stuff, Tim, it’s all really excellent.

    Hi Leigh!

You are reading my story, aren’t you?! 😀 Very pleased you enjoyed ‘Part Three’.

Yes I enjoyed writing the caves stuff in ‘Part Three’ as it heightens the tension and the dangers, especially when writing the stuff in 2163 with the Vegrons; Domus Clag and Sinclair. I’m glad they reminded you of the era. ‘Caves of Androzani’ by any chance? 😀

Yes! Sinclair! Bet you didn’t see that coming. There were two surprises with Sinclair, weren’t there? Did you like the link to ‘City of Death’?

I’m glad you enjoyed Domus Clag recieving the punishment he deserved when working with Sinclair. Did you expect that to happen when you were reading it?

I’m very pleased you like the characters in this story and that they are believable in their frailties. I’m pleased you find my characters well-rounded and the differentiation in their dialogue.

By this point with Adams, I wanted his focus to be on returning home to his wife Alice who he clearly loves and misses when he’s so far away from her. I’m amazed I wrote that long speech of his when he was talking to the Doctor and asking whether he can trust him or not.

What do you think of Nyssa and Billy’s relationship in the story. Do you like how I’ve handled that between them?

What did you make of the Vegrons in this story? Did you like it when the Doctor and Billy had to speak like Vegrons?

I’m pleased you’re enjoying each episode of this story as I upload them to the blog. Thank you for not revealing any spoilers in your posts for any new reader’s benefit.

I’m glad you liked the cliffhanger to ‘Part Three’ and found it exciting. I bet you didn’t see that coming either.

I’m in the process of finishing preparing and uploading ‘Part Four’ of the story which should be available on Friday. Watch this space for that.

Many thanks for your kind comments, Leigh. I’m very pleased you’re enjoying ‘The Railway of Time’.

    Tim. 🙂

    Hi Tim

Oh, yes, I’m enjoying it very much!

Do you know, the parts in the caves made me think of the Dalek Invasion of Earth a bit, with the setup and the work that was being done. That’s the kind of ‘black and white’ vision of it I had in my head when I was reading it. That, and Revenge of the Cybermen – that kind of vast space, the work being done, the rulers living there.

I did not see that coming about Sinclair at all! I did like the link to City of Death, and Sinclair’s disdain for the Jagaroth; I thought that was very funny.

I thought Domus Clag was going to get some sort of bad thing happen to him; his weakness was evident to everyone but himself. But I didn’t see quite where it was going, of course, as the full impact of Sinclair’s revelations only came out a bit at a time.

I thought that speech of Adams’ to the Doctor about wanting to go home and see Alice, and that he was afraid, and wanted to trust the Doctor’s reassurances, was really good. The humanity of it, and the response by the Doctor, was extremely well done, I thought.

The relationships between the characters are all very well drawn, I think, and I like the friendship that Billy and Nyssa have so quickly built up. I liked when Billy had to disguise himself and work in with the Vegrons, that was so much a moment of the classic Doctors that it seemed like exactly the right thing for him to do. And the Doctor having previous knowledge of the Vegrons was excellent, and very much what we’d want to be the case in this era’s story.

I’m trying very hard not to put any spoilers in my thoughts, as I would like to think other readers will find the story unfolding as interesting and engaging as I have. I’m very much looking forward to reading Part Four when you have that up.

    Hi Leigh

Many thanks for your kind comments.

Very interesting that the caves scenes reminded you of ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ and ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ when reading it. Of course, with ‘Dalek Invasion of Earth’ it would fit since the story is set in 2163, a year before…well…guess what?! 😀 I didn’t see ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ before writing this story as the DVD for that story was shown later on in August in 2010 and I was writing this in late May/June.

I’m glad you like Sinclair’s disdain for the Jagoroth. I thought that would be funny to write since it connects to what she is and that she considers herself superior to them. I’m amazed I gradually developed revealing Sinclair’s true identity.

Originally I thought of Domus Clag as being the main villain, but I don’t think it would work like that and I’m glad I wrote the way I did with Clag under the delusion he and his consort were meant for each other whereas in fact he was being used.

I’m glad you like Adam’s speech in the story. I’ve made sure I balanced the comedy as well as the drama in the story and I hope I’ve done that justice when writing the characters e.g. in Adams.

I’m glad you like how Nyssa and Billy’s friendship is quickly built up in the story, as I wanted to clearly have Billy interested in Nyssa and she gradually warming to him.

Did you like the comedy moments when Billy was helping the Doctor; Nyssa and Adams to escape? I don’t know if you found any similarities in the Vegrons to another lizard-like ‘Doctor Who’ monsters like the Terileptils, but I’m glad I made them distinct and that the Doctor knew all about them as a completely different species from the planet Vegros.

‘Part Four’ will be available on Friday. I hope you’ll enjoy the story’s conclusion when it comes. I’m sure you will.

    Many thanks. Tim. 🙂

    Hi Tim

Ah, of course! That would fit right in with the Dalek Invasion, wouldn’t it? Also, then with elements of The Mutant Phase BF audio story, where the Fifth Doctor finds himself back around then, doesn’t he? It’s a wonder he doesn’t get very confused!

Oh, that’s interesting that you hadn’t seen Revenge of the Cybermen before writing it. I always like that story, I wonder if, when you watched it, it made you think of your story and the vast spaces and underground caverns that are part of the story.

I think your portrayal of Sinclair, and her disdain for the Jagaroth was very good; it fits in with her character as we know learn of it, and her superiority complex. I think it would be too obvious to have Domus Clag as the main villain, and this way adds a whole new layer to the storyline that adds uncertainty, too, as to which way things may fall when the chips are down for all the characters, including the Vegrons. I like that the Zegors are torn, too, and not unquestioning in their obedience.

I feel really that Adams has developed in the story, from the bumbling ‘comic’ character that he may have risked becoming, to a really fully developed human who is trying his best to get back home to what he knows and loves. It’s nice, and it makes him a much more realistic and approachable character with that development.

I think the friendship with Billy and Nyssa is very nice, and it’s good that Nyssa has someone that is more her own age to talk with, rather than only the Doctor.

The Vegrons are, I think, very well developed as unique characters. I could see that the Terileptils might have been of some inspiration, but I think the Vegrons really do stand alone as unique characters, and very well done, too.

I will look out for Part Four from Friday, and I will be very eager to read it. I’m really enjoying the read, you’ve done an amazing job, Tim.

    Hi Leigh.

Yes it’s all very confusing, isn’t it? This is possibly the third time that the Fifth Doctor’s visited the 22nd century (the first two being ‘The Mutant Phase’ and ‘Renaissance of the Daleks’ (albeit an alternate version of the period). Not as boring as the Ninth Doctor made out to Rose in ‘The End of the World’, hey? 😀 I hope I made it clear with Nyssa knowing what’s happening in the 2163 already.

It might have been with ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’. I can’t remember as it’s a while since I remember seeing ‘Revenge’ first time on DVD. I was very much inspired by seeing plenty of adventures films and TV shows like ‘Star Trek’ with caves in them to help me write those scenes.

I’m very pleased you like how I wrote for Sinclair; Adams and Nyssa and Billy in this story. I hope you enjoy the rest of the story and see how each of the characters’ journeys turn out in the climax.

Expect ‘Part Four’ soon. As Amy Pond would say, ‘This is where it gets complicated.’

    Many thanks Leigh. Tim. 🙂

    Hi Tim

I see Part Four is out; that’s great, I am looking forward to getting a chance to read it, and find out what’s going to happen to hopefully make the story all work out right for the Doctor and Nyssa!

It is confusing, with the Doctor popping up all the time in the same time period, isn’t it? You definitely did make it clear, it’s all very well woven into the Doctor’s timeline.

Thanks, Tim, I shall let you know when I’ve got to Part Four.

    The plot thickens 🙂

The pacing is still really good – it keeps you interested but doesn’t just race on ahead before you’ve come to grips with what’s going on. I like that you’ve taken a leaf from Big Finish’s book, and you’re okay with leaving some characters aside while others get on with it and don’t rush getting back to the Doctor. I like also the combinations of good and bad luck the characters encounter – it makes it feel real and means you just can’t predict how the next step will go so the suspense is still up there.

I enjoyed Billy going ’round in disguise, and again it felt realistic that he was uncomfortable and trepidatious about what he was doing. I feel from the self-reflective dialogue Billy uses that this is more in the style of the Big Finish audios than the the TV show – although I find it’s not hard to visualise the action, either.

The end was also unexpected and I’m looking forward to seeing how that pans out in the last episode.

    Aye,
    Helen

      Hi Helen,

Glad you’re still enjoying ‘The Railway of Time’ and have enjoyed ‘Part Three’. Very pleased you like the pacing of this episode. I enjoyed writing the characters in this story especially with the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, Adams and everyone else. I’m pleased you like how I’ve written Billy’s character when he went in disguise and had some trepidation and reflective dialogue when feeling uncomfortable. I thought the ending would surprise you. 😀 I hope you’ll enjoy how everything turns out in the final episode and that you’ll find it a satisfying conclusion to the story.

      Many thanks for your comments,

      Tim. 🙂
