1. The Gathering of Companions

Roll original 1974 Delia Derbyshire title music

SCENE #1 – INT – DARK CORRIDOR, LONMAR CARGO HOLDER 4050 – N/A
A space-ship travels through Lonmar Space on impulse speed in the backwaters of the universe. On board the space-ship on the lower levels, Nyssa and Billy walk down a dark corridor, carrying torches to find their way. They are lost and cautious, as the bulkheads creak and moan above them.

NYSSA
“This corridor seems endless!”

BILLY
“How far do you think we’ve come?”

NYSSA
“I’m not sure. Approximately half an hour.” (Pause) “It’s too dark here.”

BILLY
“The batteries in this torch won’t last much longer. Let’s hope we’ll get somewhere.”

NYSSA
“We’ve been in this corridor too long, Billy. We must be lost.”

BILLY
“Must be a big spaceship. I hope the Doctor isn’t far.”

They walk on a bit further before turning around the corner. They then stop.

BILLY
“Wait a minute! There’s a light ahead! At the far end of the corridor!”

NYSSA
“Let’s hope it’s a control room or something.”

BILLY
“No wait! It’s a section of routes. Going left, right and straight on. It’s a junction point.”

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “Hush, Billy!”

BILLY
“What is it?”

NYSSA
(apprehensively) “Ssh! I heard something!” (Pause) “Yes! It’s coming from the right!”

They listen, as they both hear footsteps approaching.

BILLY
(quietly) “Yes, you’re right! I mean ‘right’. It is coming from the right! Someone’s coming.”

NYSSA
“Some people as a matter of fact.” (Pause) “Quickly, Billy! Behind that wall!”

Nyssa and Billy get behind the wall, as they await the oncoming people. Both become silent for a moment. As the people come around the corner, something smashes to the floor. Victoria Waterfield and Jo Grant enter. Jo Grant was the one who smashed something, as she dropped her torch with the glass breaking.

JO
(apologetically) “Oh I’m dreadfully sorry, Victoria! I’m very dropsy. Now there goes one of our torches.”

VICTORIA
“It’s alright, Jo. I’ve still got mine. I’ll hold onto it to get through this corridor. We should be able to see our way in the dark.”

JO
“I know how clumsy I can be. But that’s because…”

Nyssa then comes out of hiding.

NYSSA
“Uh…hello!”

Jo and Victoria give a startled cry once they see Nyssa. Billy then comes out of hiding and joins Nyssa.

BILLY
“Nyssa, what are you doing?!”

NYSSA
“They’re not hostile, Billy! You can see they’re lost as we are.”

BILLY
“Oh. Well…” (clears throat) “If you say so.”

JO
(relieved) “Thank goodness we found some people! Isn’t that good, Victoria?”

VICTORIA
(relieved) “Yes it is! I was afraid we’d be the only ones here.”

NYSSA
“Perhaps we should introduce ourselves. I’m Nyssa!”

BILLY
(cheerfully) “And I’m Billy! Hello!”

JO
(delightedly) “Nice to meet you, Nyssa; Billy! I’m Jo Grant! Friends call me Jo.”

VICTORIA
“And I’m Victoria! Victoria Waterfield.”

BILLY
“Hello Jo; Victoria! Nice to meet you both.”

NYSSA
“Is there anybody else here with you?”

JO
“We were going to ask you the same thing.”

At that moment, somebody jumps out from the left passageway and startles Nyssa, Billy, Jo and Victoria. Ace enters, training a fully-charged weapon on them.

ACE
(threateningly) “Stay where you are, you four! I’m not messing! This weapon’s fully loaded!”

Nyssa, Billy, Jo and Victoria raise their hands up in the air whilst Ace trains her weapon on them.

VICTORIA
“Oh mercy!”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “It’s alright! Please, we don’t mean any harm!”

ACE
“Yeah, you would say that wouldn’t you?!”

JO
“It’s true! Do we look like we could be the bad guys? Well bad girls and one bad guy?”

NYSSA
“Please, we’re lost! We’re just trying to…”

ACE
(shouts) “Shut up!”

Ace reloads her weapon and keeps her focus on Nyssa, Billy, Jo and Victoria.

ACE
(threateningly) “Now…tell me how to get off this ship or I’ll blow you four up sky high!”

JO
“We wish we could tell you! We don’t know how to get off ourselves!”

ACE
“You’re telling fibs!”

VICTORIA
“If you won’t listen to us, you might as well shoot us now! But just get it over with, please!”

NYSSA
(to Ace) “Have you been brought here against your will?”

ACE
“What’s it to you?”

NYSSA
“Because I think we’ve all been brought here for the same reason! All five of us! And unless you put that weapon down, we won’t get anywhere with not helping each other.”

JO
“Nyssa’s right! Please put the gun down!”

BILLY
“Yeah, do as Nyssa says!”

ACE
(suspiciously) “Why should I trust you?”

NYSSA
“Only you can decide that. Not us. Do you want to escape or not?”

VICTORIA
“It also depends whether you want to escape with us or not.”

Moment of silence ensues. A short while later, Ace lowers her weapon.

ACE
“Alright! I’ll listen to what you have to say.”

NYSSA
(relieved) “That’s better! By the way, I’m Nyssa!” (introduces others) “This is my boyfriend, Billy, and these are Jo and Victoria.” (to Ace) “What’s your name?”

ACE
(gradually) “Ace. Friends call me, Ace.”

BILLY
“What…Ace as in the playing card?”

ACE
(sharply) “Oi! Don’t get funny with me, mate!”

NYSSA
(interjects) “Well, Ace! It seems we’ve been brought here for a reason and we’d like to know what it is! Or who it was that brought us here.”

JO
“It could be some kind of…big alien monster or something.”

VICTORIA
“I’m baffled as anyone to know what’s going on!”

ACE
“That goes double for me! The Professor said that…”

BILLY
(interrupts) “Actually, now I come to think of it, how exactly did we get here? I’ve been wondering how Nyssa and I arrived here before you three turned up.”

VICTORIA
“That seems to be a very good point!”

At that moment, metallic footsteps approach. The five companions turn around to see man-sized robots approaching them.

NYSSA
“That question will have to wait, I’m afraid.”

JO
“I know it’s dim to ask but…are those robots?”

BILLY
“They certainly are! Real live walking robots coming towards us!”

VICTORIA
“I wondered when someone would find us! I didn’t expect it to be robots!”

ACE
“Blimey! That’s some serious hardware!”

The robots eventually arrive as the lead robot, Robot #A1, steps forward to address the five companions. It talks in an elegant, silky voice.

ROBOT #A1
“Greetings. Welcome to Lonmar Cargo Holder Four-Zero-Five-Zero. I am Spec Serv Robot A-One. On behalf of Lonmar society, we greet you in the name of the Lonmar President.”

JO
(nervously) “Well, that’s good to hear. Thank you.”

ROBOT #A1
“You will all come with us now. You must be taken to the bridge.”

BILLY
“N-N-Now wait a minute! Wait a minute! Taken to the bridge?”

VICTORIA
“I don’t like the sound of that.” (to Robot #A1) “Why are we being taken? What for?”

ROBOT #A1
“You have been gathered for a purpose. You will come with us…now.”

ACE
“We’re not going anywhere unless you tell us what the game is!”

ROBOT #A1
“Refusal is unacceptable. If you refuse to co-operate, you will suffer the consequences.”

ACE
“Don’t mess with us, metal head!”

NYSSA
“No, wait! Perhaps we should do as it says.”

JO
“No, I agree with Ace! The robot doesn’t own us, so why should we do as it says?”

VICTORIA
“I agree! We’ll stay right here until someone else comes to collect us!”

JO
“Yes!”

ACE
(to Robot #A1) “There’s your answer, robot! So there! We’re not shifting!”

BILLY
“Ace, look out!”

Robot #A1 then raises its arms up as they transform into barrel energy guns. They churn around slightly, as they’re being loaded.

ROBOT #A1
“Threat mode activated. I am armed. You must comply with robot protocols or else you will be eradicated.”

A few more robots transform their arms into weapons as they train them on the five companions, ready to fire as well.

ROBOT #A1
“And I am not alone.”

JO
“Oh dear. Not quite what we had in mind, but um…”

NYSSA
“We’re surrounded!”

The five companions watch as the robots surround them with their arm-like weapons. A moment of silence ensues.

ROBOT #A1
“You must comply.”

BILLY
(gradually) “On the other hand…”

JO
“Well, when you put it like that.”

NYSSA
“Exactly! Come on! We’d better do as it says.”

VICTORIA
“Very well.”

ACE
(protests) “If you think I’m going to listen to that tin pot…”

At that moment, the Lonmar spaceship is under attack. The whole corridor shakes violently. The five companions fall to the floor whilst the robots remain standing upright, despite shuddering momentarily.

BILLY
“Whoa! That just…that just came out of nowhere!”

VICTORIA
(anxiously) “Oh! I didn’t like that at all!”

JO
“The ship’s under attack? What’s all this about?!”

Another attack occurs, as the corridor shakes violently causing the companions to topple over again.

NYSSA
(to Robot #A1) “What’s going on? Tell us why we’re being attacked!”

ROBOT #A1
“You must come with us now. To the bridge. We must go to the bridge. You must comply with commands.”

ACE
“Tell us what we want to know or I’ll…”

The robots re-train their energy weapons on the five companions again.

NYSSA
“Ace! We won’t get anywhere like this! Let’s do as the robots say for now, shall we?”

Moment of silence.

ACE
(grudgingly; reluctantly) “Alright then. I’ll go along with it just this once!”

Eventually, Nyssa, Billy, Jo, Victoria and Ace follow the robots out of the dark corridor. Robot #A1 leads the way, whilst the other robots escort the five companions from the rear.

BILLY
“Say Nyssa, what’s going to happen to us? I wonder why we’ve been brought here.”

NYSSA
“I’ve no idea, Billy. But I imagine it’s not pleasant.”

JO
“Oh I hope it won’t come to that. I’m frightened enough as it is. And these clothes I’m wearing aren’t good to be running about in.”

VICTORIA
“Let’s hope these robot-things won’t kill us.”

ACE
“Well whatever happens…I’m determined we five stick together and work as a team! We’ll escape! You betcha life on it!”

SCENE #2 – INT – PRESIDENT SECRETARY’S OFFICE, MAIN CITADEL – DAY, AFTERNOON
On the planet Lonmar, in the main citadel of the central city, Jess Stewart, the President of Lonmar’s secretary, enters. She returns to her office desk and sits at it, about to go through some files. As she rummages through, a buzz echoes on the intercom. Stewart flicks a switch to turn the intercom on.

STEWART
(through intercom) “Presidential Office.”

DARVILL (V’O)
“Miss Stewart, it’s me! Commander Darvill! I’m here to see the President!”

STEWART
(through intercom; gratified) “Oh yes!”

Stewart then flicks another switch. A beeping sound echoes.

STEWART
(through intercom; flirtatiously) “The door is open for you now…Commander Roy!”

DARVILL (V’O)
“Commander Darvill, Miss Stewart! Don’t use my first name over the intercom. I’ve had to tell you that before!”

STEWART
(coyly) “Ooh! Sorry for being so friendly!”

There’s the whirring sound of the outer door opening and closing from outside. The inner door then opens, as Commander Darvill enters.

DARVILL
(resolutely) “Hello.”

STEWART
(flirtatiously) “Hello there! May I call you Roy now?”

DARVILL
(impatiently) “Is President Owen in his office?”

STEWART
“He is! You got the message then?”

DARVILL
“Obviously! That’s why I’m here!”

STEWART
(distressed) “Why are you so flustered and sharp with me? Has something happened?”

DARVILL
“Heavy day Miss Stewart, as you must know! My men and I have been out there on the streets non-stop! It’s murderous! I don’t have to remind you…”

STEWART
(interjects) “Alright, you don’t have to go into the gory details on my account. I’ve heard enough from the other guys.”

DARVILL
“What about the President, Miss Stewart? What does he want? And at a time like this when I’ve got better things to do?”

STEWART
“I’ve no idea! And stop calling me, Miss Stewart! It’s Jess, remember? Your little Jess?”

DARVILL
(distantly) “I haven’t got time for this!”

STEWART
(mockingly) “Ooh! You haven’t got time for this, have you?”

DARVILL
(apprehensively) “Don’t start this again, Jess!”

STEWART
(coolly) “Oh! It’s Jess now, is it?”

DARVILL
“I said ‘not now’, Jess! I’m in a bad mood! Besides, you’re too young.”

STEWART
“Ah, well. Perhaps this ‘young’ girl can help you out of your bad mood! You know how persuasive I can be! Especially at an opportune moment like this!”

Stewart steps towards Darvill with flirty intentions.

DARVILL
“Stop it, Jess!”

Stewart then embraces Darvill. At that moment, President Craig Owen enters from his office. Stewart and Darvill immediately break off their embrace.

OWEN
(bewildered) “What’s this then? Canoodling hey, Commander?”

DARVILL
(to Owen) “Sorry, sir.” (quietly; to Stewart) “What did I tell you?!”

STEWART
(to Darvill) “Sorry.” (to Owen) “Sorry, Mr. President sir.”

Moment of silence ensues, as President Owen paces about the room.

OWEN
“Miss Stewart?”

STEWART
“Yes, Mr. President.”

OWEN
“Has Mr. Darvill arrived yet?”

STEWART
(gradually) “Yes, sir. He’s here in my office as you can see.”

OWEN
(bitterly) “Then send him in now.”

STEWART
“Yes, sir.”

Owen grunts, as he returns to his office. Stewart giggles as she turns to Darvill.

STEWART
(giggles; to Darvill) “Well, we should do this again sometime! If you ask me out that is.”

DARVILL
(through gritted teeth) “I did warn you!”

OWEN
(shouts from his office) “Mr. Darvill! Get in here now!”

DARVILL
“Coming, sir.”

Darvill makes his way forward to enter the President’s office.

SCENE #3 – INT – PRESIDENT’S OFFICE, MAIN CITADEL – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the president’s office, Owen closes the door once Darvill’s inside.

OWEN
“Ah, Mr. Darvill.”

DARVILL
“Mr. President.”

Moment of silence.

OWEN
“Well, I suppose you’re wondering why I called you here, hey man?!”

DARVILL
“Yes, sir.”

OWEN
“Well then.” (Pause; excited) “It’s happened!”

DARVILL
“Has it, sir?”

OWEN
“Yes! And let me tell you, Mr. Darvill! This is going to be fantastic! Why…it’s going to be a killer!”

DARVILL
“Right. Um…” (Pause) “Am I being fired, sir?”

OWEN
“Me?! Fire you?!”

DARVILL
“I just thought since you saw me…”

OWEN
(interrupts) “Darvill, I’m talking about our acquisition! To save Lonmar from chaos! Haven’t you been paying attention, man? We’ve got them at last! The Doctor’s companions!”

DARVILL
“What?! You mean…we’ve actually got them?! They’re coming to Lonmar?!”

OWEN
“They certainly are! Five of his loyal companions!”

DARVILL
“I’m awestruck, sir! That’s just…a stroke of luck! We got this far, sir!”

OWEN
“It was destined to be, Mr. Darvill! As Lady Krige said it would!”

A buzz echoes from the intercom. Owen flicks a switch to turn it on.

OWEN
(through intercom; impatiently) “Yes, what is it now?”

STEWART (V’O)
“It’s Miss Stewart, Mr. President! On the intercom!”

OWEN
(through intercom; impatiently) “Yes, yes! What is it?”

STEWART (V’O)
“Just thought you’d like to know that Lonmar Cargo Holder Four-Zero-Five-Zero is arriving. It’s just entered the planetary atmosphere.”

OWEN
(through intercom; gratified) “Has it indeed? Well, well, well! Is the cargo secure?”

STEWART (V’O)
“Yes, sir.”

OWEN
(through intercom) “Excellent! See to it that they’re brought to the main citadel immediately!”

STEWART (V’O)
“Yes, sir.”

Owen flicks a switch to turn off the intercom.

DARVILL
“Is this them, sir?”

OWEN
“Yes! I can hardly believe it, Mr. Darvill! They’re actually coming!”

SCENE #4 – EXT – SPACE-PORT #5, OUTSIDE CENTRAL CITY – DAY, AFTERNOON
At one of the space ports outside the central city, the Lonmar Cargo Holder 4050 makes a landing on one of the space pads. The ship’s turbine engines cool down, as it makes a final descent.

SCENE #5 – INT – MAIN BRIDGE, LONMAR CARGO HOLDER #4050 – DAY, AFTERNOON
On the bridge of the spaceship, Victoria finds herself experiencing disturbing images. Voices and noises of people threatening and hurting her echo, as she contorts in fear and apprehension.

VICTORIA (V’O)
(cries) “No! You can’t ask me to do that! I won’t be free by committing murder!”

Victoria is suddenly roused by Jo who stands next to her.

JO
“Victoria? Victoria darling, are you alright?”

Victoria comes round, as she finds herself with Jo, Nyssa, Billy and Ace on the bridge. They’re surrounded by robots. Some of them work at control stations. The three main robots designated as A1, B2 and C3 keep watch over them.

VICTORIA
(confused) “What happened? Have I been sleeping?”

JO
(concerned) “You seemed to be in a daze. Like you were having a daydream or feeling ill. You’re not ill, are you?”

VICTORIA
“No, no! I’m alright Jo, really! It’s just…something came over and…I seemed to be in a trance! I feel queasy too.”

ACE
“Space sickness?”

NYSSA
“We’re nearly there now, Victoria. We should be getting out of this space ship any time.”

JO
(encouragingly) “Yes! There you are you see, Victoria! It’ll be alright!”

VICTORIA
“I hope so.”

Meanwhile, Billy talks to Nyssa as they look outside.

BILLY
“It’s late afternoon, wherever we are. It looks like a city out there.”

NYSSA
“We could be anywhere. There’s no knowing why we’ve been brought here.”

BILLY
“I wonder if we’ll meet any humans.”

NYSSA
“The population of this society might be all mechanical. These robots seem to imply it.”

Ace joins in on the conversation.

ACE
(interjects) “But what do robots want with us five? Bit loony if you ask me.”

BILLY
“Perhaps we’re in the middle of a great war. We were attacked by another ship.”

ACE
“Wicked! I’ve been wondering when we’d get some action!”

BILLY
“Or perhaps it’s the Doctor. He could be waiting for us here on this planet right now.”

NYSSA
“You could be right, Billy. Maybe it is the Doctor.”

Jo and Victoria overhear the conversation and join in too.

JO
(surprised) “Wait a minute! You two know the Doctor?”

NYSSA
“You know the Doctor, Jo?”

VICTORIA
“But…I know the Doctor as well!”

ACE
“Me too!”

BILLY
“W-W-Wait a minute! Let’s slow down!” (Pause) “We all know the Doctor?”

JO
“That must be why we’ve been brought here! It’s something to do with the Doctor!”

ACE
“So we’re in the nick because of the Doctor! I might have guessed!”

VICTORIA
(distressed) “Oh no! Not these robot things again!”

The five companions turn around as the three robots A1, B2 and C3 approach.

ROBOT #A1
“We have arrived at our destination. You will all come with us.”

JO
(protests) “Why have you brought us here?! What is this ‘purpose’ we all seem to have?”

ROBOT #A1
“You have a special mission.”

ACE
“We know about the ‘special’ bit, duh-brain.”

ROBOT #B2
“No harm will come to you. But you must come now.”

VICTORIA
“We’re not leaving unless you answer our question!”

ROBOT #C3
“The President of Lonmar will explain. He is waiting.”

ROBOT #A1
“But you must come with us now.”

ROBOT #B2
“Comply or else we will initiate threat mode again.”

BILLY
(coyly) “Very insistent aren’t you, you robots!”

ACE
“Is this something to do with the Doctor?”

ROBOT #C3
“We are not programmed to answer that question.”

ACE
“Got ya! I knew it was!”

ROBOT #A1
“Do not delay. You will come with us now.”

The robots train their arm-like energy weapons on the five companions again. The five companions become nervous.

NYSSA
“Come on. We’d better do as they say.”

BILLY
“Yeah.” (to Robot #A1) “Take us to your leader, leader.”

NYSSA
“Not the best time to be funny, Billy.”

With that, Victoria. Jo, Nyssa, Billy and Ace leave the bridge as they get escorted by the robots.

SCENE #6 – EXT – STREET #44, CENTRAL CITY – DAY, AFTERNOON
A short while later, the companions escorted by the robots find themselves in the streets of Lonmar. They’ve been walking for quite some time and the streets seem to be endless.

ACE
(to robots) “I’m bored! Can’t we stop at a café somewhere, if you’ve got any? I’m fed up of seeing the same streets!”

VICTORIA
“I don’t think I can walk much further! I feel like we’ve been walking for hours!”

ROBOT #C3
“You must be patient.”

ROBOT #B2
“If you are seen trying to escape, we will shoot you.”

ACE
(quietly, to herself) “Yeah? Well you dummies don’t know what it is I’ve got in my rucksack!”

NYSSA
“Perhaps it’s best you keep that rucksack of yours closed, Ace. We may need whatever it is you’ve got in there later on.”

BILLY
“Do you want me to carry it for you, Ace? It looks heavy.”

ACE
“You keep your mitts off what’s mine! I’ve got dangerous stuff in here! Nobody touches it!”

Jo then faints. Billy makes his way over to Jo to help her.

BILLY
(concerned) “Jo? Jo, are you alright?”

JO
(dazed) “W-W-What’s…happening?”

Like Victoria, Jo goes through a waking dream and experiences visions that trouble her. She also hears voices, as she contorts in fear and apprehension.

JO (V’O)
(cries) “No! It can’t be! I remember something like that when I was a kid!” (starts to panic) “Keep it away! Keep it away from me!”

Jo then finds herself roused by Billy.

BILLY
(cries) “Jo? Jo, please wake up!”

Jo eventually wakes up and sees everyone staring at her.

JO
“Billy? Am I…what just happened?”

BILLY
(concerned) “I…I think you had a funny turn.”

JO
(dazed; confused) “I…” (Pause) “I think…I was dreaming.”

VICTORIA
“Dreaming?! I had a dream myself when I was on that ship!”

JO
“And you felt a little queasy, didn’t you! That’s how I’m feeling now!”

BILLY
“So the two of you…” (Pause) “You’ve had waking dreams!” (to Nyssa) “Nyssa? Do you think that…?”

NYSSA
“Yes! I was wondering the same thing!”

VICTORIA
“What are you talking about?”

BILLY
“Nyssa and I have had waking dreams ever since we were abducted.”

JO
“What?! All of us have had waking dreams?!”

Moment of silence, as everyone looks to Ace.

ACE
“What are you looking at me for?”

NYSSA
“Tell us you haven’t had a waking dream yourself too, Ace. Because if you have, [then…”]

ACE
(interjects) “Well actually…now you mention it, I’ve been having a dizzy dream myself!”

BILLY
“Hmm. Coincidence?”

NYSSA
“I’d say it was more than a coincidence.”

They are then interrupted by the robots.

ROBOT #A1
“You must come now. Delay is not acceptable.”

BILLY
“Hey, wait a minute! Can’t you see Jo’s not well? We have to wait until she’s ready to go!”

The robots train their arm-like energy weapons on them again instantly.

NYSSA
“You won’t get anywhere by threatening us! If you want us in one piece, then you won’t shoot us!”

ROBOT #B2
“We are complying with our orders.”

ROBOT #C3
“You must comply with our orders.”

ACE
(challengingly) “Get new orders, jerks!”

VICTORIA
“We go when we say we go! So that’s that!”

Just then, there’s a huge explosion and the streets are under attack. Gunfire echoes and ships zoom overhead attacking the city.

ROBOT #B2
“Alert! Alert! Lonmar under attack.”

ROBOT #A1
“We must defend ourselves.”

The robots charge up their arm-like energy weapons and raise them up to the sky. They fire on the ships flying overhead. Meanwhile, the five companions get under cover.

VICTORIA
“What is that awful noise? Those things flying overhead! They’re massive!”

NYSSA
“Spaceships! An army of spaceships attacking the city!”

ACE
“Wicked! This is far cooler than I could have hoped for!”

JO
“We’ll get killed if we remain in these streets!”

BILLY
“The robots seem to be occupied at the moment.”

NYSSA
“That gives us the advantage! We must get away from here!”

VICTORIA
“There’s a staircase leading downwards over there! We can make our way over there and find a place to hide!”

JO
“Good thinking, Victoria! At least we’d be safe from this gun-ho!”

ACE
“Works for me!”

BILLY
“And me! Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes! Come on! Let’s make for the staircase whilst everyone’s not looking!”

With that, Nyssa, Billy, Jo, Victoria and Ace make a run for it to the staircase.

SCENE #7 – EXT – ALLEYWAY, CENTRAL CITY – DAY, AFTERNOON
The five companions eventually arrive at the bottom of the stairs, escaping the robots, as they now enter an alleyway just off Street #44 in the central city.

ACE
(cries) “Quick! Everyone in here!”

Nyssa, Billy, Jo and Victoria follow Ace’s call, as they make their way into an abandoned warehouse. They all get inside, whilst the fighting continues elsewhere.

SCENE #8 – INT – ABANDONED WAREHOUSE, CENTRAL CITY – DAY, AFTERNOON
They shut the warehouse door and the five companions breathe a sigh of relief. After a few moments, they find the place stuffy.

JO
“This place can’t have been used for ages! An old abandoned warehouse!”

NYSSA
“It’s a good thing you spotted this, Ace! Well done!”

ACE
“That’s me! Using my initiative!”

VICTORIA
“But what was all that about? We were in the midst of a terrible war zone!”

BILLY
“Are we safe here?”

NYSSA
“We should be. That is until missile fire blows up the roof.”

VICTORIA
(concerned) “How long do we have to stay in here?”

BILLY
“Until we’re certain no robots come our way when they pass.”

NYSSA
(matter-of-factually) “After they know we’ve escaped. At the moment, we’re too vulnerable.”

ACE
“Yeah, quite right we are!”

NYSSA
“We’ll have to find various hidings places in this warehouse in order for the robots to be confused when they’re looking for us.”

BILLY
“This place seems to be a goldmine of hiding places! There are lots to choose from!”

JO
“We’d better not go for all of the same ones then.”

VICTORIA
“Let’s a find a hiding place while we can then.”

At that moment, a gun clicks behind the five companions.

DARVILL
“I really wouldn’t advise that, ladies and…gentleman.”

The five companions turn around to see Commander Darvill raise a gun at them. Darvill is accompanied by armed soldiers who also train weapons on them.

DARVILL
(firmly) “You’re surrounded! Don’t try to make any sudden moves!”

NYSSA
“I’m afraid these armed soldiers have caught us.”

VICTORIA
(groans) “Oh no! Not again!”

ACE
“I knew it was too good to be true.”

DARVILL
(firmly) “Raise your hands up in the air, please! Do it now!”

The five companions obey, as they raise their hands up in the air.

JO
“What is it you want? You don’t have to threaten us like this!”

BILLY
“Yeah. You obviously want us alive, so why hold a gun?”

DARVILL
“You will be taken to the main citadel. The President of Lonmar will answer your questions.”

The warehouse doors then open, as Robots #A1, #B2 and #C3 enter.

JO
“Look, everyone! Our robot friends have finally caught up with us!”

ACE
(wryly) “Thanks for mentioning it, Jo.”

The robots stop in their tracks and address Darvill.

ROBOT #A1
“You have caught them, Mr. Darvill.”

ROBOT #B2
“Good man, Mr. Darvill.”

ROBOT #C3
“We always knew we could count on you, Mr. Darvill.”

Darvill doesn’t say anything for a few moments before he speaks to the five companions.

DARVILL
“Welcome to the planet Lonmar, ladies and…gentleman.”

The five companions soon get escorted away by the robots again.

SCENE #9 – INT – CELL CHAMBER, MAIN CITADEL – DAY, AFTERNOON
Down in the lower levels of the main citadel, President Owen enters the cell chamber to meet Lady Krige. As he approaches, he makes a bow before addressing Krige.

OWEN
“My Lady Krige. Your President, Craig Owen, is here.”

KRIGE
“You have some news for me, do you not?”

OWEN
“I do indeed, darling!”

KRIGE
(unbothered) “Speak while you may. I’ve had a long dull day. I’m about to take my sodium chloride bath. I would prefer not to have any bad news.”

OWEN
“Oh, you won’t say that when you hear this! The robots have captured the five companions of the Doctor!”

KRIGE
(gradually; interested) “Have they indeed?” (Pause) “Well that’s exceptional, isn’t it? Impressive! Gratifying!”

OWEN
“You’re saying all the right words, your ladyship. I’m so glad you’re pleased!”

KRIGE
“Your robots do improve, Mr. President. I congratulate you.”

OWEN
“Ah, well…”

KRIGE
“Where are they now, Owen?”

OWEN
“They’re on Lonmar and on their way to the main citadel! Commander Darvill has seen to it that they’re escorted safely!”

KRIGE
“That is good. See to it that they are well treated. Give them the buffet and dinner you and your catering staff have prepared for them. They are to be honoured in your house.”

OWEN
“Yes! Don’t you worry; your ladyship! I’ve given them the best hospitality they can have!”

KRIGE
“I hope so, Mr. President.”

OWEN
“You can rely on me!”

KRIGE
“Leave me now. I will have my bath.”

OWEN
“Yes! Right away!”

President Owen leaves the cell chamber, whilst Lady Krige turns her attention to the tub containing her bath.

KRIGE
(indulgently) “Now…with the sodium chloride in place, all I need to do is undress.”

A strange metamorphosis then takes place, as Lady Krige transforms into something horrible and nasty. She squirms and hisses whilst stepping into the tub. Her voice becomes distorted.

KRIGE
“Now…the grand event can begin! I can send out my signal!”

With that, the monster that was Lady Krige bursts into the tub. She squeals, as sparkly streaks of electricity extrude off her. Eventually, a whirring whining echoes to indicate an unusual wavelength signal being sent out.

SCENE #10 – INT – CITADEL LOUNGE, PRESIDENTAL QUARTERS – DAY, AFTERNOON
In the citadel lounge of the presidential quarters, Nyssa, Billy, Victoria, Jo and Ace are being offered food and drink by the robots. The atmosphere is like that of a cocktail party. One of the robots, Robot #C3, addresses Victoria.

ROBOT #C3
(politely; to Victoria) “Drink, miss?”

VICTORIA
(nervously) “Uh, yes. Thank you.”

ROBOT #C3
(politely; to Victoria) “Food, miss?”

VICTORIA
(nervously) “Oh. Thank you, yes. Very kind of you.”

Victoria nervously takes the food and the glass of ‘whatever it is’ from the trays that Robot #C3 is carrying. Robot #C3 then goes off. Victoria goes over to join Nyssa, Jo and Billy whilst Ace scouts around the buffet.

VICTORIA
“What is this they’re serving us with? Is it wine? If it is, it’s most peculiar!”

JO
“I’ve no idea what the food is. It’s all clogged up into a small roll like play-do.”

BILLY
“It doesn’t look very appetising either.”

Jo tries a bit of the ‘play-do’-like roll whilst Victoria takes a sip from the ‘wine’.

JO
(gratified) “Whatever it is, it’s rather tasty. I didn’t think it would taste as good as this.”

NYSSA
“It must be the healthier nutrients. At least that goes to show a society living in good health.”

BILLY
“How’s the wine, Victoria?”

VICTORIA
“It’s very nice. A bit spicy, but…I don’t think it’s poisonous.”

NYSSA
“Yes. If it was poisonous, we would be dead by now.”

JO
(curiously) “Where’s Ace got to?”

BILLY
“I think she’s helping herself.”

Ace returns with a plateful of food and eats with pleasure.

ACE
(indulgently) “Cor! This is terrific grub! Really scrumptious! A oner, this place! They must have top quality chefs around here!”

NYSSA
“How many ham sandwiches is that, Ace?”

ACE
“Five! I’m wondering if I should have some more before anyone else.”

JO
“Isn’t that a bit greedy?”

BILLY
“You seem very fond of food, Ace.”

ACE
“Hey! You only live once! Besides, how do we know we’re going to survive?”

At that moment, Commander Darvill enters with President Owen. Darvill looks to see the companions gathered and becomes shocked.

DARVILL
(accusingly; to Ace) “Oi! You! You can’t have any of that! Dinner hasn’t started yet!”

ACE
(retorts) “You should have put a ‘do not eat’ sign up, shouldn’t you?!”

NYSSA
“Ace, please.”

OWEN
(interjects; to Darvill) “It’s alright, Mr. Darvill. They are allowed to have something from the buffet. I programmed the robots to serve them as you can see.”

DARVILL
“Oh.” (Pause) “Um…sorry, Mr. President. I um…”

OWEN
“Not to me. To our guests, Mr. Darvill.” (to Nyssa; Billy; Jo; Victoria; Ace) “My dearest apologies, my young friends. You must forgive my security commander. He can get a bit heated when it comes to abiding by the rules.”

BILLY
“That’s quite alright, sir. May we ask who you are?”

OWEN
“My name’s Craig Owen. I’m President of the planet Lonmar.”

VICTORIA
(astonished) “President? You’re in charge of everything? Of all this?”

OWEN
(amused) “You have a right to be sceptical. It’s hard to look at me like I know anything. I look like a common bloke, don’t I?!”

VICTORIA
“Oh. I didn’t mean it like that.”

JO
“And you oversee everything that goes on in the whole of…what do you call it…Lonmar?”

OWEN
“Lonmar is merely a small planet. Not like Earth, Miss Grant.”

JO
“Uh…I didn’t tell you my name, Mr. President.”

OWEN
“Oh I know your name, Miss Grant! In fact I know all your names…you five lovely companions.”

NYSSA
“How is it you know so much about us, Mr. President?”

ACE
“Yeah? What’s the gig? Why kidnap us? One of us can get really nasty if you’re not careful!”

OWEN
“I know, Miss McShane. I assure you I’m well prepared for what you’ve got in store.”

ACE
“Oi! Nobody calls me by that name!”

BILLY
(to Owen) “How is it you seem to know so much about us when we know nothing about you?”

OWEN
“All in good time, Mr. Walker.” (Pause) “Now if you don’t mind, dinner is about to be served. I think we’d better not keep chef waiting.”

DARVILL
“The dining room is through this door if you’ll all follow me.”

VICTORIA
(to Owen) “You seem to be making us feel welcome, Mr. President. May we ask why?”

OWEN
“Why, don’t you know? You five are all honoured guests!”

JO
“Honoured guests?”

OWEN
“Yes! The five of you! You know the Doctor! You are all companions of the Doctor! It is a great honour for you to be in our presence on Lonmar!”

The five companions eventually follow Darvill into the dining room. President Owen takes up the rear as well as the three robots, A1, B2 and C3.
