‘The Stockbridge Terror’, Part Two, Chapter 5

nyssa the stockbridge terror

5. “Reading Time, Everybody”

Roll original 1982 Peter Davison opening credits

REPRISE
The medieval knights, including Alazais and Tristain, march foward as they’re about to strike the Doctor and Max. The Doctor and Max remain down on the ground, as they’re unable to move. They watch as the knights approach.

MAX
(anxiously) “Doctor, we can’t stay on the ground like this! Those knights are going to give us the chop!”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Max! There’s no need to panic! Just do what I say!”

MAX
(panics) “No need to panic?! There’s every reason to panic! There’s no chance for us, Doctor! No chance! Those knights are going to slaughter us! We’ll be struck dead! They’re going to kill us, Doctor! Kill us!”

The Doctor remains calm whilst Max panics. The medieval knights advance with their swords raised in the air as they’re about to kill the Doctor and Max.

(CONTINUES INTO:)

SCENE #43B – EXT – COUNTRY ROAD, STOCKBRIDGE – DAY, EVENING (2010)
As the knights are about to attack…

DOCTOR
(cries) “Halt! Stop!” (Pause) “Alright! I give in!”

MAX
(shocked) “Doctor?! Have you lost your mind? You can’t just give up! Not like that! You’re the Doctor!”

RUPERT
(barks) “Knights, halt!”

The knights halt as they lower their swords. The Doctor fumbles for the Althrace book in his coat pockets before he takes it out for Rupert to see.

MAX
“Doctor, what do you think you’re playing at?!”

DOCTOR
(whispers; to Max) “I’m doing what you suggested, Max. Giving them the book. Now get on your feet!”

MAX
(whispers; puzzled) “But Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
(whispers) “Don’t worry. I’ll help you up!”

With the Doctor’s help, Max struggles to get to his feet, still weakened from the shot he received from the WWII soldiers. As the Doctor helps Max up, he sneaks something into his hand.

DOCTOR
(whispers) “Here, Max! Take this!”

MAX
(whispers) “What the..?”

DOCTOR
(whispers) “When I give the word, throw it! Do you understand?”

Without getting an answer from Max, the Doctor turns to address Rupert.

RUPERT
“You’re willing to surrender, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes, I am. So long as you keep your knights and army soldiers back in one line there.”

RUPERT
“No tricks, Doctor! These chaps will not hesitate to kill you…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “No, of course not. I’ll personally hand the book over to you then. If you tell your troops to fall back and stand in one line. I won’t be able to escape, Rupert.”

Moment of silence.

RUPERT
(calls) “All troops fall back! In single file, you will stand on guard! Don’t let the Doctor and his friend escape!”

MAX
“Well, isn’t that charming?!”

The knights and the WWII army soldiers retreat and stand to attention in single file.

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Rupert. Much appreciated you doing that for me. I’m ever so grateful.”

RUPERT
“You’ll make your way over to meet me and hand over the book. Just you, Doctor. Your nutter friend stays where he is!”

MAX
(agitated) “Well, isn’t that just…?”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “Yes, Max. You stay where you are. I’ll hand the book over.”

RUPERT
“Move slowly, Doctor. Move slowly towards me.”

DOCTOR
“Just as you say.”

The Doctor walks over slowly towards Rupert to meet him; with the book in hand.

DOCTOR
“You’ve got a fine set of troops there, Rupert. May I ask how you managed to get knights from medieval times and World War Two soldiers? They’re so authentic!”

RUPERT
“The book, Doctor! You are to give it to me!”

DOCTOR
“Would you like me to read a passage from the book? There’s a lot of cracking good funny lines in here! Very good comedians, the Lords of Althrace. Dry humour admittedly but…”

RUPERT
(impatiently) “The book I said, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Alright, alright. Here you go.”

The Doctor is about to hand the book over to Rupert until…

DOCTOR
(to Rupert) “But before I give you the book, Rupert! I have one thing to say.” (shouts; to Max) “Now Max! Throw your googly!”

MAX
“Here it comes!”

With that, Max throws the cricket ball, which the Doctor gave to him whilst he helped him to stand up, at the knights and the army soldiers in single file. The knights and the army soldiers all get knocked out one by one like a pile of dominos, as they fall to the ground. Rupert turns around to see this.

RUPERT
(angrily) “What have you done?!”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Goodbye Rupert!” (calls) “Max, run!”

The Doctor then runs towards Rupert’s car with the Althrace book in his hand. Max runs over to join the Doctor at the car. Rupert realises he’s been cheated before he runs after the Doctor and Max.

RUPERT
(shouts) “Stop! Stop, Doctor! Come back here!”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully; to Rupert) “I’m afraid I’ve got a few friends waiting for me back in Stockbridge! Apologies, Rupert! Can’t stop!”

RUPERT
(shouts) “Get back here, Doctor! Give the book to me!”

DOCTOR
(to Rupert) “If you want the book Rupert, come and get it!” (to Max) “Max, quick! Inside!”

Max obeys as he and the Doctor get inside Rupert’s car. They get in the car just in time, before Rupert arrives and thumps on the car door from outside.

RUPERT
(shouts; to Doctor) “Get out of my car, Doctor! Get out of my car!” (to Max) “And you nut-case, get out!”

DOCTOR
(calls; to Rupert; from inside car) “Since you threatened me and Max with knights and soldiers attacking us, I’d say you’re at a disadvantage!”

RUPERT
(shouts) “I’ll report you for theft, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(calls; to Rupert; from inside car) “And I’ll report you for murder if you’re not careful!” (to Max) “Max, drive! Quickly man!”

MAX
(stammers; from inside car) “I…I don’t know how to drive this thing, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(impatiently; from inside car) “Just drive, Max!”

MAX
“Alright! I’ll try!”

With that, Max uneasily turns the car engine on. Rupert continues to thump on the car door from outside.

RUPERT
(shouts) “Get out! Get out, Doctor! Give me my car back! Give me that book!!! I’ll have you AGGHHHH OWWWW! MY FOOT!!!”

Rupert shrieks in pain, as his foot gets run over by Max driving the car. Max and the Doctor drive off down the road, whilst Rupert becomes infuriated. He picks up a rifle from one of the fallen WWII army soldiers and trains it at his car driving off.

RUPERT
(shouts) “Stop, Doctor! Stop or I’ll open fire!”

Rupert then fires warning shots with his rifle at the car as it drives off. It turns out Rupert is a bad shot, as the Doctor and Max drive on to Stockbridge in the car and dodge the bullets. Rupert eventually throws the rifle down onto the ground and stamps his feet in anger.

RUPERT
(curses; angrily) “Got away! They flipping, blooming got away!”

SCENE #44 – INT – RUPERT’S CAR, COUNTRY ROAD – DAY, EVENING (2010)
Inside Rupert’s car, the Doctor and Max are relieved at having escaped from Rupert and his group of knights and WWII soldiers. Max continues to drive the car on the country road.

MAX
(laughs) “I never knew I had it in me! Driving this car!” (to Doctor) “Doctor, are you alright?”

DOCTOR
(troubled) “How else should I be, Max?”

MAX
“You’re right, of course.”

DOCTOR
“How about you, Max?”

MAX
“Same here.”

DOCTOR
“Sorry to hear that.”

MAX
“They want that book so desperately, Doctor. How did they even know where to find us? I haven’t told anyone about it, I swear.”

DOCTOR
“The person who dropped the book in Wells Wood could have told Rupert about it, obviously. And for that, they instructed Rupert and his army of madmen to kill us. The more I hold this book in my hands and know what it means, the less I like about it.”

MAX
“I can’t understand how Rupert managed to get knights and World War Two soldiers about long since gone.”

DOCTOR
“There’s something not right about those knights and soldiers, Max. Something amiss with how time works. Nyssa, Billy and I saw a Roundhead and a Tudor archer appearing out of nowhere. My rhondium sensor detected delta particles as residual effects of those temporal transferences. And the man we saw in space armour…yes I’m sure it was space armour he wore. I’m not surprised someone’s deliberately taken soldiers of old out of time.”

MAX
“Crikey! Does Rupert himself possess time travel technology then? He and some others have taken knights and soldiers out of time; made them work and do their bidding.”

DOCTOR
“I doubt it. No, this is some form of alien intervention.”

MAX
“Aliens? You mean…aliens are afoot in Stockbridge? And Wells Woods?”

DOCTOR
“Aliens who may have been here for a long time. Without you being aware of it.”

MAX
“So if they’re aliens, what’s so interesting about getting soldiers back from Earth’s past and using them?”

DOCTOR
“I’m not sure. Anyway those soldiers and knights weren’t real.”

MAX
(baffled) “But we just saw them…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “What we saw were anomalies. Those soldiers can’t have been real. There’s something not right about them. The way they looked. Didn’t you see?”

MAX
“What do you mean?”

DOCTOR
“They were pale and sometimes stone-faced. Not normal behaviour for any human being. I have a nasty suspicion that…that…”

MAX
“What? You have a nasty suspicion of what, Doctor?”

The Doctor trails off, as he then fumbles for the book inside his coat pocket. He takes it out, opens it and flicks through the pages. He stops for a moment, looking up in mid air.

DOCTOR
“I wonder. Who wants this book so badly…to set up their own army of fake soldiers? Earth soldiers, in fact.”

The Doctor then takes out his Kraston IV communicator from his coat pocket.

MAX
“What are you doing, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“Keep driving, Max! I’m going to call somebody!”

MAX
(realises) “Oh yes, I see. You’re going to call Nyssa, aren’t you? With that…communicator of yours.”

The Doctor switches on his communicator before he speaks into it.

DOCTOR
(through communicator) “Nyssa? Nyssa, do you hear me? Are you there?”

A crackling static noise of interference occurs. No response.

DOCTOR
(through communicator) “Nyssa! Please respond! Nyssa!”

Crackling static interference occurs again. Still no response.

DOCTOR
(through communicator) “Billy, are you there? Nyssa; Billy? Are you there?!”

But it’s no use as there’s still no response and the crackling static inference continues. The Doctor switches the communicator off and becomes disturbed.

MAX
“They’re not there, are they?”

DOCTOR
“No. No response at all. Something must have happened to them.” (Pause) “Keep on driving, Max! Drive at full speed!”

The Doctor contemplates this even more, as he looks through the book again whilst Max drives on back to Stockbridge. The car accelerates at full speed as Max drives their stolen car onward.

SCENE #45 – INT – MAIN BAR, RED FERN INN – NIGHT (2010)
Later on, it’s now night-time back at the Red Fern Inn. Nyssa, Billy and Andrew are still held captive by Samuel, Melanie and the landlord Oswald Jackson. Samuel and Melanie have taken Nyssa’s Kraston IV communicator and they destroy it by smashing it to the ground.

MELANIE
(mockingly) “There we are! Communicator destroyed!”

SAMUEL
(mockingly) “Yes! You three won’t get any help from the Doctor on that end now, will you?!”

NYSSA
“Well that’s such a shame because you won’t get the truth now about where the book is, since you’ve smashed up the communicator.”

MELANIE
“You’re lying! You’re playing games with us!”

BILLY
(agitated) “What is it you want from us?! Why do you want that book anyway?”

SAMUEL
“None of your business, little fella.”

ANDREW
“What’s got into you, three?” (to Oswald) “Why are you behaving like this, Mr. Jackson?”

OSWALD
“The book’s very important to our partners in crime. If you give us the book, then we’ll let you go unharmed. If we have a care that is.”

ANDREW
“Look! Max had the book then gave it to the Doctor.”

NYSSA
“Don’t tell them, Andrew!”

ANDREW
(to Nyssa) “I’m thinking of your safety, Nyssa!” (to Oswald) “Then they went out. Goodness knows where.”

OSWALD
“Samuel! Check the rooms. See if they’ve hidden the book somewhere here. Then we’ll know whether they’ve been lying to us.”

SAMUEL
“Right, Oswald.”

Samuel then goes off with a gun in his hand to search the rooms.

BILLY
“I’ve met people who’ve collaborated with nasty aliens in the past. Believe me, it’s no fun or reward working for them.”

NYSSA
“Billy’s right. So you’d best be careful or back out whilst you can. These benefactors of yours can be very dangerous.”

MELANIE
“Shut it, you lot! We’re not interested in your twaddle. We’ve surpassed the point of humanity.”

ANDREW
“Oh yeah? And what’s that supposed to mean?”

Oswald and Melanie refuse to answer.

OSWALD
(menacingly) “Keep an eye on them, Melanie dear. Don’t let them out of your sight. Or there’ll soon be trouble for us!”

MELANIE
“I’ve got my eyes on them, Dad.”

Oswald goes off to the back of the bar, whilst Melanie trains her gun on Nyssa, Billy and Andrew. The three captives talk quietly to each other.

ANDREW
(grumbles; to Nyssa) “So…this is the sort of thing you get up to then, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“On a regular basis, yes. Stockbridge has been the subject of alien intervention on a few occasions. The last time I was in Stockbridge, the Doctor and I…”

ANDREW
(interrupts; baffled) “I can’t understand why Mr. Jackson is behaving like this. Or Melanie and Samuel for that matter. We used to be such good friends, Melanie, Samuel and I. Mr. Jackson’s cranky I know, but I’m used to that sort of person when working for them.”

BILLY
(teasingly) “Maybe you shouldn’t have walked into a job so blindly, Andrew mate.”

ANDREW
(agitated) “I don’t walk ‘blindly’ into a job as you call it. And I’m not your mate, mate! When a job comes along, I take it. If I find the boss unpleasant, then I live with it. On previous occasions, the owner of the Red Fern Inn was a woman. At least they were all friendly.”

BILLY
“You happen to judge people rather too shrewdly in my opinion. You also seem to place status and pride above everything else.”

NYSSA
“Billy, I’m sure Andrew…”

ANDREW
(to Billy) “I don’t need your opinion or anybody else’s on how I treat people, thank you very much.”

MELANIE
(interrupts; shouts) “Just shut up, you lot! Just shut up!”

SCENE #46 – EXT – STOCKBRIDGE, ENGLAND – NIGHT (2010)
Meanwhile, the Doctor and Max arrive back in Stockbridge. They park the car close to the Red Fern Inn. They get out of the car and make their way towards the inn.

MAX
“Doctor? Suppose those knights and army soldiers came chasing after us.”

DOCTOR
“Oh I suspect we’ll have more things to worry about than a bunch of toy soldiers, Max!”

MAX
(startled) “Oh! You think so?”

DOCTOR
“I know so. The book you gave me is proof of that.”

MAX
“You still haven’t explained why the book makes little sense.”

DOCTOR
“It’s a book of riddles, Max. Only those who wish to seek the secrets of Althrace can really understand it.”

MAX
“You seem to know a lot more about Althrace than I do, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“I know certain things about Althrace, Max. If I knew everything about that storehouse of a place bathed in time and the resources it had there, it’ll corrupt me and make me great and terrible.”

MAX
“Oh, you mean like…when Gandalf refused to take the ring from Frodo in the first book of ‘The Lord of the Rings’? That’ll it make him a Dark Lord? In ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’? Is that what you’re saying, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I hope Nyssa and Billy are safe indoors with Andrew. I hope things are settled between them. I’d hate to deal with domestic affairs when there’s a crisis…”

MAX
(realises) “Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
(continues) “When there’s a crisis on the scale [of…]”

MAX
(insistently) “Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“Max, what?!”

MAX
“Listen! Inside the inn! I can hear voices! Listen!”

The Doctor and Max approach the Red Fern Inn, as they listen by the window to hear the voices inside.

SCENE #47 – INT – MAIN BAR, RED FERN INN – NIGHT (2010)
Back inside the Red Fern Inn, Samuel returns to the main bar and carries a book in his hand.

OSWALD
“Samuel?! Did you find the book?”

SAMUEL
“No! But I’ve got this!”

Samuel shows the book in his hand to everyone.

ANDREW
(protests) “Hey! That’s my book! Give it back to me!”

NYSSA
“That’s my present to Andrew! Please give it back to him!”

BILLY
(intrigued; to Nyssa) “Oh! Is that the book you wrote Nyssa, when…?”

NYSSA
“Yes, Billy. It’s the book I wrote when I was with Andrew for a time. It was a parting gift for him when I left.”

ANDREW
(demands) “Give that book back to me!”

MELANIE
(taunts) “Fat chance!”

ANDREW
(angrily) “I said give it back!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Andrew, no!”

Andrew makes his way forward before Samuel pushes him back roughly to the floor. Andrew falls to the floor, groaning in pain. Nyssa and Billy come round beside Andrew to help him up.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Andrew?! Andrew, answer me!”

BILLY
(concerned) “Is he going to be alright?!”

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Andrew, please answer me!”

Andrew groans as he recovers.

ANDREW
(staggered; to Nyssa) “Yeah. Yeah I’m fine Nyssa, thanks.”

BILLY
(relieved) “Thank goodness for that.”

ANDREW
(to Billy) “What do you care?! We’re rivals, aren’t we?!”

NYSSA
(to Oswald) “Please, Mr. Jackson! Please give Andrew his book back. You’ve got no use for it!”

MELANIE
(taunts) “You’re getting nothing from us, losers!”

OSWALD
“If you don’t tell us what we want to know, then Samuel will throw this book into the fireplace! You shall never see it again! The pages will be burned to ashes! How’s that for a bonfire night, hey?!”

Samuel holds Andrew’s ‘Circular Time’ book from Nyssa in his hand, whilst Oswald and Melanie threaten Nyssa, Billy and Andrew with their rifles.

SCENE #48 – EXT – STOCKBRIDGE, ENGLAND – NIGHT (2010)
Outside, the Doctor and Max overhear what’s been said from inside the Red Fern Inn. They’re now deeply troubled.

DOCTOR
“Nyssa and Billy. And Andrew. That’s their voices I can hear.”

MAX
“There are also other voices in there! Rough voices! You don’t think they’re in trouble do you, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“Max, I think they’re in trouble!”

The Doctor and Max get closer to the Red Fern Inn window and listen to more of the conversation between Nyssa, Billy and Andrew with Oswald, Melanie and Samuel from inside.

NYSSA
(from inside; pleads) “There’s no need to threaten us like this! We haven’t got the book!”

BILLY
(from inside; angrily) “Nyssa’s telling you the truth! Why don’t you believe us?!”

SAMUEL
(from inside) “Because we’re sworn enemies! We serve our leaders! You can’t fool us!”

ANDREW
(from inside; to Samuel) “You’re definitely not on my list for Christmas cards this year, mate.”

The Doctor then stands away from the Red Fern Inn window, as he’s satisfied in what he wanted to hear.

MAX
(realises) “That’s Samuel and Melanie. And Mr. Jackson the landlord. They’re looking for the book too.”

DOCTOR
(grimly) “They’re all in league on this. Their leaders must be desperate.”

MAX
“Have you got a plan on how to rescue Nyssa, Billy and Andrew, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I’ve got something in mind, yes. But it’ll have to be sheer poetry!” (Pause; to Max) “Now listen to me, Max. This is what I want you to do.”

The Doctor begins to explain to Max on what they’re going to do.

SCENE #49 – INT – MAIN BAR, RED FERN INN – NIGHT (2010)
Back inside the Red Fern Inn, Nyssa, Andrew and Billy struggle to cope with their captors. Oswald is on the verge of destroying Andrew’s ‘Circular Time’ book.

MELANIE
(teasingly; to Nyssa) “Last chance to tell the truth before Samuel destroys Andrew’s novel, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Please stop! If you have any compassion in you, give that book back to Andrew. We’ve told you the truth.”

SAMUEL
“We’re losing patience here!”

BILLY
“Can’t you get it through your thick skulls?! We don’t have the book!”

MELANIE
“That’s it! You’ve had your chance!”

OSWALD
“It’s party time!” (to Samuel) “Samuel! Into the flames that book goes!”

ANDREW
“No!!!”

But before Samuel throws Andrew’s ‘Circular Time’ book into the fireplace, the Doctor speaks out loud from outside for everyone to hear.

DOCTOR
(cheerfully; loudly; from outside) “Reading time, everybody! Reading time!”

OSWALD
(to Samuel) “Wait, Samuel! Wait!”

Samuel holds back from throwing Andrew’s ‘Circular Time’ book into the fire as Oswald tells him to. The Doctor then enters, as he carries the Althrace book in his hands. He opens the book and reads something random from it out loud.

DOCTOR
(reads)‘Cheese is like a rocket on the moon; windows crash and smash; shatters in time; harpoons glow; radio waves echo and the ever-ending sounds of time dazzle in front of everybody’s eyes!’

The Doctor turns over to the next page.

DOCTOR
(continues to read) ‘Warriors chant; experiments the mind; horror of rocky roads; time attacks; two make trouble; we are in a fix!’

OSWALD
(impatiently) “The Doctor, I presume.”

DOCTOR
(to Oswald) “Ssh! This is the interesting bit. Very amusing.” (continues to read) ‘Candelabras sound like clocks because candles tick. Crazy man asked what time; I said “Eight fifteen.”; “I’m going nuts” he said, “I’m getting different answers all day!”

The Doctor eventually closes the book and puts it back in his coat pocket.

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Very funny these Althracians. You’ve got to admire their dry humour.”

MELANIE
“You know what we’ve come for, Doctor.”

OSWALD
“It seems your friends have been telling the truth. And I nearly destroyed this novel of theirs. How careless of me!” (to Samuel) “Samuel, give the book back to them.”

Samuel obeys as he throws the ‘Circular Time’ book back. But instead of Andrew, Billy manages to catch it.

NYSSA
(astounded) “Billy! You caught my novel!”

BILLY
(grudgingly, to Andrew) “Yours I believe.”

ANDREW
(grimly) “How kind.”

Andrew takes the book from Billy. Meanwhile, the Doctor confronts Oswald, Melanie and Samuel.

DOCTOR
(to Oswald) “You’ve gone to a lot of trouble threatening my friends like that, Mr. Jackson. It’s not in my nature to be agitated but…”

OSWALD
(interjects) “You will give us the book, Doctor.”

SAMUEL
“Or else we shoot one of your friends’ heads off!”

NYSSA
“Charming!”

MELANIE
“Starting with the girl!”

BILLY
(protests) “No! Don’t!”

ANDREW
(protests) “Leave Nyssa alone!”

Billy and Andrew stand in front of Nyssa to protect her.

NYSSA
“Billy; Andrew! There’s no need to be so over-protective with me!”

BILLY
(to Nyssa) “Sorry, sweetheart. But I’m not going to let them hurt you! Not ever!”

ANDREW
“Same goes for me, Nyssa! I’ll protect you from these three!”

BILLY
(to Andrew) “Excuse me, but that’s my prerogative!”

Just then, Max enters from the back of the Red Fern Inn.

DOCTOR
“Max, quick!”

MAX
(to Samuel) “I’ll take that from you, Sammy good man!”

Max then snatches Samuel’s rifle off him.

SAMUEL
(shocked; aghast; to Max) “What?! Where did you come from?!”

DOCTOR
“And I’ll take that, Mr. Jackson!”

The Doctor also snatches Oswald’s rifle off him.

OSWALD
(to Doctor) “Oi! Give me my shotgun back!”

DOCTOR
(calls) “Nyssa; Billy; Andrew!”

Nyssa, Billy and Andrew run forward…

NYSSA
“And we’ll take this!”

…as they snatch Melanie’s rifle off her.

MELANIE
(infuriated) “Give that rifle back to me, you three!”

Melanie lunges forward towards Nyssa, who has the rifle. But Billy and Andrew stand in Melanie’s way and push her back away from Nyssa.

ANDREW
“Oh no you don’t!”

BILLY
“Get away from my Nyssa, you!”

Melanie ends up on the floor before she gets up quickly, agitated and infuriated. She then goes over to join her father Oswald.

MELANIE
“Father, they pushed me! Those two rat-bags pushed me!”

OSWALD
(reassuringly; to Melanie) “It’s alright, my dear. You’re safe.” (to Samuel) “Samuel, get over here!”

Samuel joins Oswald and Mealnie, as the three find their rifles being trained on them by the Doctor, Max and Nyssa.

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa; Billy; Max; Andrew) “Well done, you four!” (to Nyssa; Max) “Keep these three covered with those rifles you’ve got, Nyssa; Max.”

MAX
“Aye, Doctor! We’ve got them covered!”

NYSSA
“We won’t let them harm us, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Billy; Andrew. One of you take this book from me and keep it safe!”

The Doctor takes the Althrace book out of his coat pocket and hands it over to Billy and Andrew.

BILLY
“It’s alright, Doctor. I’ll take it!”

ANDREW
(protests) “I was going to take that!”

BILLY
“What a pity. I volunteered first!”

NYSSA
“Will one of you please take the book from the Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Billy, please! You take the book from me!”

Eventually, Billy takes the book from the Doctor.

DOCTOR
“Thank you.”

At that moment, Rupert enters as he’s out of breath.

SAMUEL
(agitated) “Rupert?! Where the heck have you been?! You were supposed to get the Doctor, you lob!”

RUPERT
(breathlessly) “I was! But he tricked me!”

OSWALD
“It doesn’t matter, Rupert. Once we have killed the Doctor and his friends, we shall have the book for ourselves!”

The Doctor then trains his rifle on the Althrace book Billy’s carrying.

DOCTOR
“Not when I have this rifle by me trained on the book Billy’s carrying. The book you so desperately want. You really don’t want me to blow away the book into atoms so abruptly for the sake of your masters, do you? You’ll be failing in your mission to retrieve it, won’t you?”

MELANIE
“He’s bluffing, Dad! Don’t listen to him! He’s bluffing I tell you!”

DOCTOR
“Just watch me.”

The Doctor continues training his rifle on the Althrace book in Billy’s hand, as he’s ready to open fire. Everyone else is quite uneasy about this action the Doctor’s going to take.

NYSSA
(nervously) “Err…Doctor?”

BILLY
(nervously) “Yeah! Doctor?”

A moment of tense silence ensues.

OSWALD
(gradually; to Doctor) “Very well. We shall not risk damage to the book. For the sake of our employers. But we will be back for you, Doctor. Be warned! You have not heard the last of us!”

DOCTOR
“You’re not funny either, Oswald. That’s a very typical choice of words for a villain!”

OSWALD
(grunts; to Melanie; Samuel; Rupert) “Come on, daughter; you morons! Let’s leave these freakos and be off!”

Grudgingly, Oswald, Melanie, Rupert and Samuel leave the Red Fern Inn as they go out through the front door. Once they’ve gone, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy, Max and Andrew breathe a sigh of relief. The Doctor is reunited with Nyssa and Billy, as Nyssa hugs him and Billy shakes him by the hand.

NYSSA
(graciously) “Thank you, Doctor! Thank you so much!”

BILLY
“Just in the nick of time. If it wasn’t for you, Nyssa’s novel would be in cinders.”

DOCTOR
“Glad to help, Nyssa; Billy. Mind you, I’m rather anxious about the circumstances at the moment.”

NYSSA/BILLY
(in unison) “So am I”

Nyssa and Billy almost laugh together whilst the Doctor contemplates the next step.

MAX
(whispers; to Andrew) “Seems like we’ve managed to gain a rest bite, Andrew lad.”

ANDREW
(bewildered, out of sorts) “I thought this was going to be a simple task of getting my girlfriend back.”

SCENE #50 – EXT – STOCKBRIDGE, ENGLAND – NIGHT (2010)
Outside, Oswald, Melanie, Rupert and Samuel make their way out of the Red Fern Inn and walk into Stockbridge village.

RUPERT
(angrily) “We should have killed that silly Doctor on the spot!”

SAMUEL
(frustrated) “Aye, Rupert. He wouldn’t dare shoot that book anyway if we attempted to kill one of his friends.”

RUPERT
“Yeah!” (to Oswald) “Why didn’t you think of that, Oswald?”

OSWALD
“Shut up, the pair of you! It matters not. We’ll capture the Doctor later on.”

MELANIE
“But what do we do now, Dad? How are we going to explain this to our allies? They’re not going to be happy, you know.”

OSWALD
“They’ll have to live with it. Besides…we’ve kept in charge of their soldiers. There’s no point in them getting rid of us.”

RUPERT
“They maybe silly, Oswald. But they’re angry and mad.”

SAMUEL
“Aye that they are. They have no sense of humour like us. I tried to make a joke with them and one of them smacked me in the face!”

MELANIE
“Told you not to make a joke with a dub head didn’t I, Sammy.”

RUPERT
“I don’t see how this book happens to be very important.”

OSWALD
“I told you before, Rupert. It’s the greatest…”

RUPERT
(interjects) “I know, I know. It’s the greatest book in the cosmos. But that means nothing. The Doctor didn’t make much sense when he was reading those passages from the book out loud.”

SAMUEL
“None of this makes sense, mate.”

MELANIE
“Perhaps you can bargain with our allies again, Dad. There may be something we’ve learnt about the Doctor and the others we can offer them. In exchange for keeping us alive.”

RUPERT
“There seems to be a love triangle going on. With those two guys fawning over that pretty girl. Young Billy and young Andrew over little Nyssa, I think it was.”

SAMUEL
“Aye I noticed too. That could be very useful to our advantage.”

OSWALD
“We shall see, boys. We shall see. I shall note the information back to our allies in my report. When we get back that is.”

MELANIE
“And while we’re at it, why don’t we lessen the Doctor’s chances as well.”

OSWALD
“Oh yeah. And what, Melanie dear, did you have in mind?”

The four then get into a car as they listen to Melanie’s suggestion. They drive off back to the secret underground base.

SCENE #51 – INT – MAIN BAR, RED FERN INN – NIGHT (2010)
Back inside the Red Fern Inn, the Doctor helps Max to sit down on a chair as he’s still injured after being shot by a WWII soldier. The Doctor helps him by laying his foot on a stool.

DOCTOR
“There you are, Max! Put your foot up on this chair and you should be fine.”

MAX
“Thanks, Doctor. You didn’t have to do that for me. I could have done it myself.”

DOCTOR
“Nonsense. Glad to be of service, dear chap.”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Doctor, I don’t understand. That landlord, his daughter and those two men. We met them in nineteen sixty-five.”

BILLY
“And now they’re here with old army soldiers and medieval knights who aren’t real as you told us. It’s ludicrous to think that.”

NYSSA
“Are they robots, Doctor? This army you mentioned?”

DOCTOR
“No, no. There weren’t any clinking sounds and gears whirring when they walked. They seemed zombie-like. No, there’s something more to it than that.”

MAX
“If this is so, Doctor, then couldn’t Oswald, Melanie and the rest of them…”

NYSSA
“They may not be real either.” (Pause) “Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“It certainly is a possibility. Someone may have wanted to keep the memories of Oswald and the others intact for a long period of time. More than a decade.”

BILLY
“But then there was that teleport thing again, remember? No sorry. Not teleport. ‘Osmic…osmic projection’ you called it.”

DOCTOR
“Yes you’re right there, Billy. Osmic projection, I wonder.”

MAX
“You think you know who these aliens are, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“As a matter of fact…”

ANDREW
(interrupts) “Will you lot just stop?! Stop talking nonsense! You’re driving me crazy here!”

NYSSA
(concerned) “Andrew, what’s the matter?”

ANDREW
“I’m not happy!”

BILLY
(teasingly) “Oh you aren’t, are you?”

ANDREW
“I can’t cope with this! This is all too much! My boss going mad and pointing a gun at us! As well as his daughter and a few mates.” (to Nyssa) “This is really what you do then, Nyssa. All that stuff you mentioned in that book of yours. You really meant it.”

NYSSA
“Yes. Everything I wrote in that novel was true. I’m surprised at you, Andrew. I told you before it wasn’t fantasy! It’s real.”

BILLY
“You see, Andrew. You should have realised the bigger picture doesn’t get larger than this.”

DOCTOR
(agitated) “Very intriguing this debate is, I’m sure. But could you sort out your love affairs another time. Let’s get back [to…]”

ANDREW
(ignores Doctor; to Nyssa) “I thought you would have come back for me, Nyssa. To see me. It turns out my hopes for us being together again were small. You never really intended to come back for me.”

NYSSA
“I felt awkward about seeing you, Andrew. I did come back eventually, despite my intentions not to. I tried on a few occasions unsuccessfully to find you…”

BILLY
(astonished) “Nyssa?!”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “This was before I met you Billy, so keep quiet!” (to Andrew) “I asked for you, Andrew. I asked for Andrew Harper at the bar of the Red Fern Inn. But on that occasion you weren’t there. I thought you were gone forever from Stockbridge. Never to be seen again.”

ANDREW
(interrupts) “Hold on a minute, Nyssa.” (Pause) “Andrew Harper?”

NYSSA
“Yes.”

ANDREW
“You checked me up as Andrew Harper?!”

NYSSA
“Yes I did.” (Pause) “That’s your name, isn’t it?!”

Moment of silence.

ANDREW
“It’s Whittaker! My name’s Andrew Whittaker, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
(startled) “Your name’s…Andrew Whittaker.”

ANDREW
“Yes!”

Another moment of silence.

NYSSA
(apologetic) “Andrew, I’m so sorry…”

But Andrew storms off, upset, as he heads down the corridor.

NYSSA
(calls) “Andrew, wait! Come back! Come back Andrew, please!”

Andrew doesn’t listen, as he disappears down the corridor. A moment of tense uncomfortable silence ensues.

BILLY
(teasingly) “Well…I suppose Harper’s close to Whittaker, I expect.”

NYSSA
(annoyed) “Do be quiet, Billy!”

Another moment of tense silence ensues.

DOCTOR
“I need to get some equipment from my TARDIS. I need the proper equipment to analyse this book.”

MAX
“You have equipment for this sort of thing then?”

DOCTOR
“Indeed Max.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Billy; Nyssa? I’m going back to the TARDIS. You’re more than welcome to join me.”

NYSSA
“I’m not coming, Doctor. I’m staying here for a bit at the Red Fern Inn.”

DOCTOR
“What?”

NYSSA
“I need to sort things out with Andrew. I can’t leave him now. I’ve upset him too much today.”

BILLY
“All the more reason to leave him alone, hey? Get over the shock.”

NYSSA
“Billy, please. I need to talk to him.”

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa) “Very well then. As you wish.” (to Billy) “Are you coming, Billy?”

BILLY
(hesitates) “Well, I…”

NYSSA
(insistently) “You go, Billy. I’d prefer it if you went with the Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Come on, Billy. Let’s get back to the TARDIS, shall we?”

BILLY
(grudgingly) “Oh very well.”

Billy reluctantly follows after the Doctor out of the inn.

DOCTOR
(calls back) “Look after Max for me will you, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Of course, Doctor.”

BILLY
“And you look after Nyssa for me, Max.”

MAX
“Don’t worry, Billy. I’ll look after her.”

DOCTOR
“Come on, Billy! Let’s go!”

The Doctor and Billy head out of the inn, leaving Nyssa with Max as well as Andrew.

SCENE #52 – EXT – STOCKBRIDGE, ENGLAND – NIGHT (2010)
Somewhere in the village, the Doctor and Billy seek to find the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
(agitated) “Billy, I wish you’d keep your feelings restrained. It’s not helping with getting down to solve the crisis we have.”

BILLY
“It’s very difficult when I realise my girlfriend had an boyfriend before me, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Billy, I knew Nyssa and Andrew had been together before I met you. But I know that Nyssa would never be unfaithful to you!”

BILLY
“Really? I’m anxious she’ll change her mind about me! That she’ll want to go back to him. To Andrew.”

DOCTOR
“Well, that’s her choice then.”

BILLY
(anxiously) “What?! You’d prefer Nyssa to go off with Andrew and stay with him forever?! To have her leave the TARDIS and never travel with you again?!”

DOCTOR
“Of course I wouldn’t. But I respect Nyssa’s decision. If she decides to stay with us then that’s splendid. But I’m not going to restrict her choices if she wishes to leave with Andrew. And you won’t help things by becoming jealous.”

A moment of tense silence ensues as the Doctor and Billy walk.

BILLY
“I feel like Fred Astaire facing a rival when trying to make love to Ginger Rogers. I hate being in that sort of position. Where I have to face someone who used to be an old flame of Nyssa’s. It’s driving me crazy.”

DOCTOR
(condescendingly) “We all have to face old flames, Billy.”

BILLY
“Do we?”

DOCTOR
“I’ve lived for hundreds of years, Billy. I’ve known many pains and sorrows. Once you get to my age, though I doubt that you will, you’ll realise it wouldn’t have been worth the bother worrying about such things.”

BILLY
(grudgingly) “Well…I suppose I am overreacting. I just can’t help it, you see. It’s the only way I know how to deal with this situation. When I see an old flame of Nyssa’s, I go…I go all fiery and giddy.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Well try to learn some self-control, Billy. Have faith in Nyssa. If you want her, then you’ve got to be patient with her. She’s delicate, Nyssa is. It’s her decision to sort it out with Andrew. You can’t step in her way.”

BILLY
“I suppose not.”

They eventually turn the corner, before the Doctor stops and looks in horror.

BILLY
(concerned) “Doctor, what is it? What’s the matter?”

DOCTOR
(shocked) “Oh no! Oh please no! Don’t let this be!”

BILLY
“Why what’s wrong, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“That place by the post office, Billy.”

BILLY
“Yes, what about it?”

DOCTOR
“It’s where I left the TARDIS!”

BILLY
(realises) “Oh I see! Yes I remember! Where is it?”

DOCTOR
“It’s gone, Billy! The TARDIS is gone!”

BILLY
(anxiously) “But…who would have taken it?”

DOCTOR
“I have a guess. Oswald and the others. They must have used their army of soldiers and knights to drag it off back to their base of operations. To keep it in storage.” (Pause) “Whoever we’re fighting against, I’ve got a bad feeling they know so much about me.”

The Doctor and Billy become worried as they wonder where the TARDIS is.

SCENE #53 – INT – STOREROOM, UNDERGROUND BASE – NIGHT (2010)
In the storeroom of the underground base, Oswald, Melanie, Rupert and Samuel supervise the storage of the TARDIS. The knights, the WWII army soldiers, the Roundheads, the Cavaliers and the Tudor soldiers push it into one of the storage cubicles. Oswald, Melanie, Rupert and Samuel look on amused as they watch the TARDIS being locked up.

MELANIE
“This will really torment the Doctor when he realises we’ve got his little box!”

RUPERT
“He’ll probably have realised it already!”

SAMUEL
“Then it gives us great fun!”

Melanie, Rupert and Samuel laugh out loud.

RUPERT
“I could do with a pint and a game of dominos to celebrate!”

SAMUEL
“‘Ere! Melanie dear? Do you think those dim-witted monster-friends could let us have a bar and a darts board for us to play with?”

MELANIE
“I don’t see why not. Provided I supply all the drinks.”

Melanie, Rupert and Samuel laugh out loud again.

OSWALD
(seriously) “Those trolls don’t even know the meaning of fun and pleasure as you all should know by now.”

MELANIE
“Oh come on, Dad. Don’t be such a spoil sport. They can allow a few liberties.”

OSWALD
“They’re stiff and toughened folk, Melanie. I wouldn’t like us to risk our necks for a few drinks.”

RUPERT
“And it also depends whether they’re willing to accept the information we give them. And that we’ve got the Doctor’s TARDIS.”

SAMUEL
“Aye, true enough. It’s the book they wanted. They’re going to be none too pleased when we tell them we haven’t got it.”

Oswald, Melanie, Rupert and Samuel then see the soldiers locking up the cubicle with the TARDIS stored inside. They bolt the doors to secure the locks.

MELANIE
(giggles; gleefully) “The Doctor would have to be a giant to rip that door down! I can just see his feeble arms trying to pull the door off its hinges!”

Melanie, Rupert and Samuel laugh again. They’re eventually interrupted, as the video link screen activates. They stop laughing at once.

RUPERT
“Oh. The video screen’s activated.”

SAMUEL
“It’s them again. Our favourite people in the world.”

MELANIE
“Be careful what you say to them now, Dad.”

Oswald grudgingly makes his way forward to speak to their allies on the video link screen.

OSWALD
(cheerfully) “Hello, dear chap. Nice night we’re having.”
