‘The Tree of Riverloth’, Part Four, Chapter 13

13. Off to the Tree Garden

Roll original 1982 Peter Davison opening credits

REPRISE

MORGUTH
(angrily; to Nyssa) “I know no mercy, girl! I am evil! I want my evil and the evil of Malador to spread out throughout the whole cosmos! To have people suffer; be tortured and die under my thumb. Under my fire! And I’m going to start with him! The boy who messed up my plans in achieving victory!” (to Melkurs) “Melkurs! Close the door on the boy’s cubicle!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “As you command, our master!”

DOCTOR
“Morguth, no!”

The Melkurs close the door on the cubicle with Billy inside.

SALOGA
(protests) “For Riverloth’s sake, Morguth! He’s a kid!”

MORGUTH
“Sarumane! Begin the induction process on the boy!”

SARUMANE
(reluctantly) “Yes, Morguth!”

Sarumane presses a button to activate the induction process on Billy. The technology for the inducers begins to power up.

MILGI
(cries; angrily) “You monster, Morguth! You monster!”

NYSSA
(cries; to Sarumane) “Sarumane, please! Spare Billy! Spare Billy’s life!”

MORGUTH
(viciously) “Begin, Sarumane! Begin now! Drain out the life force from this boy immediately!”

Billy trembles whilst he’s inside the cubicle, as he’s about to get fried.

(CONTINUES INTO:)

SCENE #117B – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
But just then, the induction process stops as everything powers down. Morguth turns angrily on Sarumane.

MORGUTH
(angrily) “Sarumane! What are you doing?! Have you stopped the induction process! Switch the inducers back on again!”

SARUMANE
“No, Morguth! I can’t!”

MORGUTH
“You were willing to obey my orders earlier, Sarumane! Have you stopped now? Do as I say!”

SARUMANE
“This isn’t the way, great Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“What do you mean this isn’t in the way?!”

SARUMANE
“We need that power! For your purpose to take over the River from the Tree. The power in that cubicle with Mr. Billy inside is all we’ve got at the moment. If we use all that up, it could…”

MORGUTH
(viciously) “You dare to challenge my authority, Sarumane?! You dare?!”

SARUMANE
“All of this is unnecessary, Great one!”

MORGUTH
(angrily) “I’ll show you ‘unnecessary’! You back-stabber!”

Morguth probes into Sarumane’s mind. Sarumane cries out in pain as he stumbles to the floor on his knees as Morguth probes into him.

SARUMANE
(in pain; pleads) “Morguth! Morguth, please! You need that power to achieve your purpose with the altar and the directional mind-link! You must know that you need that power from the cubicle!”

MORGUTH
“Oh I do need it, Sarumane! I know that definitely. But that doesn’t mean I can’t punish you! For your disobedience to me! Never disobey me again!”

SARUMANE
(in pain; pleads) “I was thinking of the success of your mission, Morguth! I had no intention of disobeying you! Please don’t torture me this way!”

Eventually, Morguth lets Sarumane go. Sarumane collapses to the floor in a heap, as Morguth towers above him.

MORGUTH
(menacingly) “I shall deal with you later. Once I’ve taken over Riverloth, I shall deal with all such treacheries!” (to Melkurs) “Melkurs! Recommence the induction process on the boy, Billy! At once!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “As you command, our master!”

DOCTOR
(protests) “Morguth, no!”

MORGUTH
“Silence, Doctor! Very soon it’ll be your turn and Nyssa’s next!”

With that, the Melkurs advance towards the controls to reinitiate the induction process. Saloga and Milgi manage to break free and try to run forward to save Billy.

MILGI
(cries; protests) “No! Let our friends go, you vicious monsters!”

SALOGA
(cries; protests) “We won’t let you harm our friends! Never!”

MORGUTH
“You two Melkurs! Hold those two youngsters back!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “As you command, our master!”

The two Melkurs grab hold of Saloga and Milgi and hold them back from getting to Billy. Saloga and Milgi cry out in pain, whilst being manhandled by the stone hands of the two Melkurs.

MILGI
“Get off me! Unhand me, you vile creatures of death!”

SALOGA
(to Morguth) “You won’t get away with this, Morguth! We’ll stop you! The good people of Riverloth will stop you!”

MORGUTH
“Fat chance of that happening!”

At the controls, the Melkurs reinitiate the induction process on Billy. The induction fusers power up again.

MORGUTH
“Yes! The induction process has begun again! The water particles and life force from your Mr. Billy shall be drained out, Doctor!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Stop this, Morguth! Billy doesn’t deserve to die like this!”

MORGUTH
“We all die, Nyssa of Traken! I am death! Death becomes me!”

Billy begins to wince in pain, as the induction process begins to drain the life out from him.

DOCTOR
(apologetic) “Billy, I’m so sorry! It seems like Sarumane’s temporary moment of stopping the induction process was for nothing!”

BILLY
(winces) “No trouble, Doctor. It’s been nice knowing you! You and Nyssa!” (to Nyssa) “Especially you, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
(woefully; to Doctor) “Oh Doctor! Can nothing be done to save Billy?!”

SCENE #118 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Back in the River Manipulator Room, Werna pleads with Proctor Glorfini, whilst he and his brothers have her and Goliathon in custody.

WERNA
(pleads) “Glorfini! Help me! Help me to disable the River Manipulator!”

GLORFINI
(laughs) “You expect me to help you, my lady? You are a traitor to your society on Riverloth…”

WERNA
(bitterly) “I’m trying to save Riverloth, you fool! Help me now or else Morguth will destroy us all!”

GLORFINI
“What makes you think I’m going to help you, Lady Werna?”

WERNA
“Because you don’t want to die like the rest of them! Like all the Fosters that serve you! Morguth will never spare your life if you continue to serve him in this way!”

Moment of tense silence.

WERNA
(realises) “Yes I see it in your eyes, Glorfini! You know I’m telling the truth! You know that Morguth will kill you instantly and the only reward you’ll get from him is death. You know that’s true!”

Another moment of tense silence, as Glorfini thinks.

GLORFINI
(gradually) “It has not been as Sarumane promised it would be. Sarumane said Morguth will save us all from the crisis on Riverloth. The crisis has worsened though. Everything that Morguth has done has gone from bad to worse. I don’t think he ever thought of the sanctity of life on this world of Riverloth.”

WERNA
“Then help us! Help me and my friends! Help the Doctor and his friends too! Let’s work together to save everyone! Every Foster, every Consul, every civilian on Riverloth! Let’s work together to stop Morguth, hey?”

Moment of silence.

GLORFINI
(gradually) “Very well, I will help you! If it is worth it.”

WERNA
“It will be worth it, Glorfini. I promise you. And don’t worry. You’ll get paid with bags of gold for you and your brothers, the Fosters on Riverloth.”

GLORFINI
(gradually) “Fosters! Release them! Lady Werna and the giant one!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “The name is Goliathon if you don’t mind!”

GLORFINI
“Whatever.” (to Fosters) “Release them!”

WERNA
“Thank you, Proctor Glorfini!”

The Fosters release Werna and Goliathon, before a humming alarm comes from one of the computer terminals.

GLORFINI
(startled) “What is that? Where’s that noise coming from?”

WERNA
(realises) “It’s coming from one of the manipulator computer terminals.” (to Goliathon) “Goliathon! Check what the display on it is showing.”

Goliathon goes over to check and see what the computer display is showing as Werna tells him to. A moment’s silence ensues.

GOLIATHON
(booms) “My lady Werna! This computer display is showing a symbol of a Tree. It’s also showing a red X on a long cylindrical design with a link between two boxes. Is that important?”

WERNA
(relieved) “Yes! It’s good news, Goliathon! It means that the Tree is telling us that the power flow in the conduit from the River Manipulator into the Induction Chamber has been switched off! We’ve been successful! We can now disable the River Manipulator.”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Which is what you intended to do before these Fosters came in here to interrupt us.”

WERNA
“Exactly.” (to Glorfini) “You can help, Glorfini! If we can just be able to…”

GLORFINI
(interrupts) “Lady Werna!”

WERNA
“What is it, Glorfini?”

GLORFINI
“Something is happening on that screen! Look! Up above your head!”

They all look to see what’s on the screen above Werna’s head.

WERNA
(gasps; shocked) “It’s Billy! Billy’s in trouble! He’s now going through the induction process instead of the Doctor and Nyssa. He’s in one of those induction cubicles, see!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “That boy! The one who saved my life! He’s about to die!” (fiercely) “No! He must not die! No friend of Goliathon must die!”

WERNA
“Then you go and help him, Goliathon! Save Billy, the Doctor, Nyssa and everyone else down there from Morguth and his Melkurs! But be careful! The Melkurs can very dangerous indeed!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I’ll be careful! Goliathon fears nothing!”

With that, Goliathon makes his way downstairs from the River Manipulator Room to the Induction Chamber below. Werna turns back to Glorfini.

WERNA
(assertively) “Now, Glorfini! If you and your Fosters help me, we’ll get this River Manipulator disabled shall we?”

GLORFINI
“We’ll help! Yes indeed!” (to Fosters) “Brothers! Come and give me and Lady Werna a hand with this!”

The Fosters do as they say, as they join Werna and Glorfini and begin to disable the River Manipulator in the room.

SCENE #119 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Back in the Induction Chamber, Billy suffers inside the induction cubicle he is in. He’s getting weaker as he’s being drained of his life force.

BILLY
(winces; in pain) “Too…too much…power.” (Pause) “I can’t…take much more…of this…punishment!”

DOCTOR
(protests) “Morguth, this isn’t necessary! Stop this!”

NYSSA
(protests) “You’ll spoil your own plans if you continue killing Billy in this way! This won’t do you any good. Or bad as you seem to think about it.”

MORGUTH
(maliciously) “It gives me great pleasure to watch your friend suffer this way! To humiliate you…after all you’ve done to the servants of Malador!”

NYSSA
“But Morguth!”

MORGUTH
(dismissively) “Oh stop your prattling, the pair of you! It’ll soon be over! For your friend Billy! His life force is nearly drained out of him now!”

Suddenly, there is a loud cry as Goliathon comes charging into the Induction Chamber. He charges at the Melkurs at the control panel for Billy’s induction cubicle.

GOLIATHON
(booms; cries) “Nobody hurts a friend of Goliathon! Nobody!!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “Stand back, you giant!”

Goliathon ignores them, as he knocks the Melkurs down like skittles in a bowling alley. The Melkurs collapse to the floor. Goliathon makes for the controls to stop the induction process on Billy.

GOLIATHON
(booms; satisfied) “There! That’s done it!”

MORGUTH
(angrily; cries) “Melkurs! The ones holding the Consuls and two youngsters! Stop that giant Riverlothian! Now!”

But at that moment, the Melkurs release Saloga; Milgi; Rondus and Galadio before they too collapse to the floor.

MORGUTH
(astonished; angrily) “What are you doing?! Get up, you fools! You Melkurs! Stop that Riverlothian! He’s stopping the induction process! And is about to free Billy and his friends, the Doctor and Nyssa!”

Goliathon then presses a button and the cubicle doors of the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are open. The Doctor and Nyssa get out.

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I’ve done it! I’ve freed the prisoners from their cubicles!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you very much, Mr.…”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Goliathon! The name is Goliathon!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you very much, Mr. Goliathon!” (to Nyssa) “Nyssa, get Billy out of that cubicle of his! He’s in a weak state!”

NYSSA
“Right!”

Nyssa goes over to Billy’s cubicle.

DOCTOR
(to Goliathon) “Mr. Goliathon! Take the Consuls Rondus and Galadio with Saloga and Milgi back upstairs where you came from! Nyssa and I will follow you taking Billy with us!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “As you say, fellow comrade!” (to Consuls) “You two, Consuls! Follow me!”

GALADIO
“Come on, Rondus! You heard what the big man said! Let’s go!”

RONDUS
“Oh! Yes, right. Just coming Galadio.”

GOLIATHON
(booms; to Saloga; Milgi) “You two! You come also upstairs with me!”

MILGI
“Come on, Saloga! Let’s go!”

SALOGA
“Right.”

Saloga and Milgi join Rondus and Galadio as they follow Goliathon upstairs. The Doctor joins Nyssa who is now supporting Billy, after taking him out of the induction cubicle.

DOCTOR
“Nyssa, can you manage with supporting Billy? Do you need help?”

NYSSA
“Take Billy’s right, Doctor. I’ll support his left!”

DOCTOR
“Right!”

The Doctor and Nyssa carry Billy between them, as they make to follow the others upstairs.

NYSSA
(jokingly; to Billy) “You’ll have to stop eating so much, Billy Walker.”

BILLY
(weakly) “Just…leave me, Nyssa. Just leave me!”

NYSSA
(determined) “Oh no you don’t, Billy! I’m not going to leave you here!”

MORGUTH
(weakly; threateningly) “You can’t leave me like this, Doctor! I’ll follow you wherever you go and stop you!”

DOCTOR
(goads) “You don’t sound so powerful now do you, Morguth? Are you losing the power of the life force by those victims that Sarumane gave you during your transference and manifestation here on Riverloth?!”

MORGUTH
(weakly; bitterly) “Be silent, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(works out) “That’s why you needed Billy so badly, wasn’t it? To obtain one last ounce of life force into your body. After Billy sabotaged the cubicles with people connected to the Induction Chamber, he weakened your power, didn’t he? You’re as vulnerable as everyone else.”

NYSSA
(goads) “You can’t be as powerful as you seem, Morguth! You’re dependent on Morguth’s technology. Your dependency must be a result of your contact with the entropy field from Traken’s destruction when you rescued Melkur spirits from the Metulla Orionsis system.”

MORGUTH
(getting stronger; vengefully) “I can still use my power! Use it…to stop you, Doctor!” (cries) “Melkurs! Rise!”

At that moment, the Melkurs rise up from the floor slowly.

DOCTOR
“Oh dear!”

NYSSA
“Doctor! I think it’s about time we got upstairs!”

DOCTOR
“Excellent idea, Nyssa! Come on! Upstairs with Billy we go!”

NYSSA
“Come on, Billy! Help us to support you!”

Nyssa and the Doctor support Billy between them, as they make their way upstairs to the River Manipulator Room. Meanwhile with the Melkurs…

MORGUTH
(angrily) “Melkurs! After them! After the enemies of Malador and me! Don’t let them escape!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “As you command, our master!”

With that, the Melkurs slowly walk forward as they advance towards the stairs to lead up to the River Manipulator Room. Morguth meanwhile attends to Sarumane who is still on the floor unconscious.

MORGUTH
(bitterly) “In the meanwhile…I shall attend to you! Dear Sarumane, my good friend!”

SCENE #120 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
In the River Manipulator Room, Werna and Glorfini with the Fosters manage to disable the River Manipulator as they take it out of its power rig within the control hub of the room.

WERNA
“There! That should do it!” (to Glorfini) “Thank you, Glorfini! You and your brothers have been very helpful…for once.”

GLORFINI
“I hope all of this will be worth it, my lady! Not just for my wealth but for the whole of Riverloth and its people!”

WERNA
“That’s what we’re trying to do, Glorfini! By disabling the River Manipulator, we lessen Morguth’s chances of controlling Riverloth!”

GLORFINI
“So what happens now from here?”

WERNA
“Well that depends on the Doctor actually. I just hope he and the others are on their up here with Goliathon!”

At that moment, Goliathon arrives upstairs with Rondus, Galadio, Saloga and Milgi behind him.

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I have found them, Lady Werna! Here are some who were prisoners downstairs with Morguth and the Melkurs!”

SALOGA
(relieved) “Werna! You’re still alive! You’re safe!”

WERNA
“So are you, you two! Saloga; Milgi, I’m so glad to see you!”

MILGI
“Likewise, Werna! Glad Billy kept you safe!”

GALADIO
(dolefully) “Aren’t you going to say hello to you mother and father, Werna?”

WERNA
“Yes. Hello, mother; father! Although I somehow feel you don’t deserve my greetings.”

RONDUS
(agitated) “Of all the insufferable, ungrateful…”

GOLIATHON
(booms; interrupts) “And here comes the Doctor and Lady Nyssa with my young friend, Mr. Billy!”

The Doctor and Nyssa with Billy come upstairs and arrive to meet up with everyone else who has gathered.

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Quick! Somebody shut the doors behind us! There are Melkurs coming upstairs!”

SALOGA
“I’ll shut the doors and lock them, Doctor.”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I’ll help, good Saloga!”

Saloga and Goliathon go back to close the doors leading downstairs to the Induction Chamber.

DOCTOR
“Nyssa! Set Billy to sit down on that bench over there for a moment.”

NYSSA
“Yes, Doctor.”

MILGI
“I’ll help you, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Milgi.”

Milgi helps Nyssa to set Billy to sit down on the bench in the left of them in the room. Billy is still weak and disorientated as Nyssa tries to revive him.

NYSSA
(consolingly) “Billy? Billy, can you hear me? Are you alright?”

BILLY
(weakly; deliriously) “Nyssa. I’m so glad…to be alive again! To hear the sound…of your beautiful voice.”

MILGI
“He’s become delirious.”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, Billy. It’s alright. Everything’s going to be alright now. The induction process is wearing off on you. I’m nearly fully recovered. It’ll be the same for you too, you’ll see!”

BILLY
(weakly; deliriously) “Nyssa. Right now…I don’t think I have the strength to see. Only laugh.”

Billy laughs out loud, as Nyssa tries to calm him down. The Doctor meanwhile approaches Werna and Glorfini.

DOCTOR
“Well done, Werna! I see you’ve got the River Manipulator disabled.”

WERNA
“With help from Proctor Glorfini and his Fosters of course!”

DOCTOR
“Of course!” (to Glorfini) “Thank you, Glorfini! I take it then you’ve decided to work with us and not for Morguth anymore.”

GLORFINI
“If this employment with you and Lady Werna is better than with Morguth, I’m happy to take my chances, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Don’t worry, Proctor. You won’t regret this, I promise.”

WERNA
“Doctor! We have the River Manipulator disabled. But it won’t stay like that for long, will it?”

DOCTOR
“No. But it will delay Morguth in his plans. Besides he’s weak and vulnerable at the moment. Until he gets more power that is.”

RONDUS
“What do you mean he’s weak and vulnerable at the moment, Doctor?”

GALADIO
“What do you mean until he gets more power?”

WERNA
(scornfully) “Weren’t you paying attention when you two were down there to hear it, mother; father?”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “It’s alright Werna, it’s alright. I’ll try and explain…”

Suddenly, the door to the Induction Chamber is broken in from the other side. Melkurs try to break their way in.

SALOGA
(cries) “Doctor! It’s the Melkurs! They’re trying to break their way in here up the stairs!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “We can’t hold them off for very long! If we are to escape from this place, it must be now!”

DOCTOR
(calls urgently) “Everyone! Get into the TARDIS! Now, quickly!”

RONDUS
“What?! In that blue box of yours?!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! In this blue box of mine, Consul Protector! Now come on, hurry up!”

NYSSA
(to Milgi) “Milgi! Help me with Billy!”

MILGI
“Yes, of course!”

Milgi helps Nyssa to support Billy, as they and everyone else including Werna; Saloga; Rondus; Galadio, Goliathon, Glorfini and the Fosters get into the TARDIS. The Doctor bundles everyone inside impatiently.

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Come on, come on! Hurry up! Inside, all of you!”

Once everyone is inside, the Doctor gets into the TARDIS too. At that moment, the Melkurs burst in through the door as they arrive on top of the stairs to see the TARDIS in their sights.

MELKURS
(in unison) “Destroy the blue box! Fire! Fire!”

The Melkurs open fire with their red eyes at the TARDIS. But it is too late, as the TARDIS takes off, whooshing and grinding as it goes.

SCENE #121 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Back in the Induction Chamber, Morguth gets Sarumane to his feet as he slowly comes round.

MORGUTH
(bitterly) “Get up!”

SARUMANE
(disorientated) “W-W-What did you say?”

MORGUTH
(bitterly) “I said get up!”

Once Sarumane is up on his feet, he looks directly at Morguth in the eyes.

SARUMANE
(disorientated) “Morguth!” (Pause) “Are…are you….are you going to kill me then?”

MORGUTH
“Unfortunately I still need you, Sarumane. So no! I won’t kill you yet!”

SARUMANE
(disorientated) “That’s very merciful of you, Great one!”

MORGUTH
“Mercy is not a word I know, Sarumane! So don’t’ be as hopeful as you seem to be.”

SARUMANE
(disorientated) “What do you want of me, Morguth?”

MORGUTH
“It’s very simple, Sarumane! I want more tributes to give me more life force! After the sabotage caused by that boy of the Doctor’s named Billy, I seem to be weakening! Loss of power and life force! That’s why I need you alive! You’re going to get that extra power and life force for me!”

SARUMANE
(disorientated) “How? Where are we supposed to go to get that kind of power source for you, Morguth?”

MORGUTH
(gradually) “You know very well where, Sarumane. At the construction site where those Riverlothian slaves are building my altar and cognitive aggrandizer array for me! The tributes shall come from those slaves!”

SARUMANE
(disorientated) “And just where are we going to put these tributes, Morguth? Now that we have only one cubicle in this Induction Chamber!”

MORGUTH
(gradually) “That is where the altar and the cognitive aggrandizer array come in, Sarumane. I have thought this out all carefully.” (Pause; menacingly) “Now, Sarumane! Take me to the construction site at once!”

Sarumane obeys, as he takes Morguth with him to the construction site. At that moment, the Melkurs return from upstairs in the River Manipulator Room to meet with Morguth.

MORGUTH
(impatiently) “Well? What is it, Melkurs? What do you want?”

MELKURS
(in unison) “We report we have failed in destroying the Doctor and his friends, our master Morguth! They escaped in the Doctor’s blue box!”

MORGUTH
(bitterly; to himself) “I so desperately need that power to restore myself and rule Riverloth forever! I must have it!”

SCENE #122 – INT – TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
In the TARDIS, the Doctor and the others including Nyssa, Billy, Werna, Saloga, Milgi, Rondus, Galadio, Goliathon, Glorfini and the Fosters gather around the console as the time rotor goes up and down oscillating.

DOCTOR
“We’re on our way! Thank goodness we’re safe from those Melkurs!”

WERNA
“You can say that again, Doctor!”

RONDUS
(astonished) “This…this cannot be! It’s incredible!”

GALADIO
(astonished) “It was a small blue box we walked into! How come everything in here is so big on the inside…?”

DOCTOR
(interrupts; tetchy) “It’s dimensional transcendental, you two! And that’s all the explanation you’re going to get from me!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “It is incredible, Doctor! I’m amazed and impressed by all this wonder you have!”

SALOGA
“We’ve been in this ship already. We know what to expect, hey Milgi?”

MILGI
“I didn’t think we’d ever come back in here, Saloga.”

Nyssa approaches the Doctor, as he works at the TARDIS console, pressing buttons and switches on it.

NYSSA
(to Doctor) “Where are we heading off to, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“To the Tree Garden now, Nyssa! There we can continue with the second part of our plan.”

BILLY
(weary) “Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(concerned) “Billy? Billy, are you alright?”

BILLY
(weary) “I’m fine, I’m fine. I just feel…oh a bit woozy. My head seems to be swimming at the moment.”

NYSSA
“It does feel like that. I had the same experience when I recovered from the induction process. Don’t worry, Billy. It means the effects are wearing off on you now.”

BILLY
(weary) “Nyssa? Did I just say to you…you got a beautiful voice?”

NYSSA
(softly) “Yes. It was very sweet of you to say that about me, Billy.”

BILLY
“Oh.”

WERNA
(to Doctor) “Doctor? What did you mean ‘continue with the second part of our plan’? Why go to the Tree Garden?”

DOCTOR
“Well it’s obvious, isn’t it Werna? We’re going to go and disconnect the wires from the Tree. That’s why we’re going to the Tree Garden. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? To save Riverloth!”

RONDUS
(protests) “Doctor, you can’t disconnect the wires from that Tree?”

DOCTOR
“Why not? We’ve disconnected the River Manipulator? Why not disconnect the wires from the Tree, Consul Protector?”

GALADIO
(protests) “We won’t have any control of the Tree if you do that. We’ll lose all of our power and survival on Riverloth.”

DOCTOR
“Exactly! Those wires in the Tree and the River Manipulator are what started off this crisis of yours in the first place, Consuls! Then of course with Morguth and the Melkurs.”

RONDUS
(protests) “But Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Quiet please, Consuls! You’re spoiling my concentration here!”

The Doctor continues to work away at the TARDIS console, pressing buttons and switches as he goes.

NYSSA
(anxious) “Doctor? If we go to the Tree Garden, I’ll have another indirect mental contact with the Tree again. I don’t think I can stand up to it with the fragility of my mind at the moment from the induction process on us from earlier.”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Don’t worry, Nyssa. I’ll protect you with my mind. I’ll project that energy barrier around your mind to protect you from any mental communication the Tree might try to make with you. We don’t want to speak to the Tree just yet.”

NYSSA
“You can’t project your mind around the Tree like that, Doctor. You’re as vulnerable as me from the induction process as well.”

DOCTOR
(abjectly) “Nonsense, Nyssa. My Time Lord body is far capable of dealing with projecting an energy barrier around the Tree as your brain. I’m sure it’ll be alright. Don’t worry about it, Nyssa.”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “Nyssa. I’ll support and look after you should the Tree contact you again if you like. You share your mind with me, if that’s possible at all.”

NYSSA
(knowingly) “Thank you, Billy. That’s much appreciated, I’m sure.”

SALOGA
“Even when we get to the Tree Garden to disable the wires from it, how do we distract Morguth and the Melkurs in the meantime?”

MILGI
“Saloga’s got a point there, Doctor. We also need to sort out this altar and cognitive aggrandizer array that’s been constructed for Morguth.”

WERNA
“We have to rescue the Riverlothian workers that are building this altar and array at this construction site. Morguth will have them already slaving so hard at the moment without food or drink.”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Saving the Riverlothian workers would help to distract Morguth and his Melkurs away from us at the Tree Garden. At least for a short while.”

NYSSA
“Does that mean we split up into groups, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes.” (gradually) “Proctor Glorfini!”

GLORFINI
“Yes, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“You and your Fosters go with Consul Protector Rondus; Consul Galadio; Saloga and Milgi to rescue the Riverlothian workers from the construction site and to distract Morguth and the Melkurs.”

RONDUS
(shocked) “What?! Us?! My wife Galadio and I go off with Glorfini and his Fosters to distract Melkurs and Morguth?!”

WERNA
“You heard him, father! He said you and mother!”

GLORFINI
“Understood, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Glorfini!” (to Werna) “Werna! You stay with me, Nyssa and Billy to attend to the Tree in the Tree Garden.” (to Goliathon) “Goliathon! You can stay with us too to help out!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I am honoured to help you out, Doctor!”

The TARDIS then wheezes and groans as the time rotor slows down.

NYSSA
“Doctor! I think the TARDIS is about to land.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa. You’re right! The TARDIS is about to land.”

SCENE #123 – EXT – CONSTRUCTION SITE, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Back at the construction in the late evening, Sarumane brings Morguth to return to the place. They see the Riverlothian workers working too hard on the altar and array for Morguth. There are moans and groans from the workers who are exhausted.

SARUMANE
“Your altar and array is nearly complete, great one Morguth! Your connection with the Tree of Riverloth is assured.”

MORGUTH
(gradually) “Good. That’s good.”

SARUMANE
“Where do you intend to conduct this contact with the Tree from, great one Morguth?”

MORGUTH
(gradually) “From the place where I manifested, Sarumane. At the waterfall area.”

SARUMANE
(surprised) “The waterfall area?! We have to go through the gardens to the outskirts of Cordow to get to the waterfall area, Morguth! It’ll take nearly a few hours to get both the altar and the array there.”

MORGUTH
“Then we must make a start, mustn’t we Sarumane!” (to Melkurs) “Melkurs! Hear me! Hear Morguth, servant of Malador, speak to you!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “We hear and obey, our master Morguth!”

MORGUTH
(to Melkurs) “Escort the Riverlothians to carry the altar and the array to the waterfall area! See that no Riverlothian worker escapes from moving the altar and array to the waterfall area”

MELKURS
(in unison) “We understand. We will go now and do as you command, great master, our Morguth!”

MORGUTH
(impatiently) “Then go quickly, my servants! Go this instant!”

With that, the Melkurs make their way to escort the Riverlothian workers to carry the altar and the array to the waterfall area.

SARUMANE
(protests) “You can’t expect the Riverlothians to carry the altar and array to the waterfall, Morguth!”

MORGUTH
(menacingly) “Why not? Everybody obeys me in the end, Sarumane! Why can’t I expect these Riverlothian slaves of mine to carry the altar and the array for me to the waterfall?”

SARUMANE
“Because they’re tired and worn out, Morguth! After all the hard work you’ve made them do to construct your altar and directional link. These Riverlothian workers deserve rest!”

MORGUTH
“Rest is for the sleepy! Sleepiness is a weakness, Sarumane! I will not tolerate any weaknesses in my new reign for Malador!”

SARUMANE
(protests) “But Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“If the workers can carry my altar and array to the waterfall without being ‘flat out’ as you say Sarumane, then I will let you live. If not…” (Pause; gradually; threateningly) “I can dispose of anyone. Even you, Sarumane!”

Sarumane says nothing for a moment, feeling disparaged.

MORGUTH
“What’s the matter, Sarumane? Concept too difficult for you?”

SARUMANE
(gradually) “I doubt whether summoning you here to Riverloth was a good idea after all, Morguth! You promised us hope! Promised me hope!” (Pause) “I doubt now about your sincerity to save Riverloth after all.”

MORGUTH
(goads) “You’re so gullible, Sarumane! Don’t forget I haven’t forgotten your betrayal to me earlier. When you disobeyed an order!”

SARUMANE
(protests) “I didn’t disobey…”

MORGUTH
“Question my authority and my sincerity again, I shall have to consider destroying you before I can let you become a part of my new domain!” (Pause) “Now. Go off! Fetch some more tributes! Obtain more power in the Induction Chamber! Have it ready to be sent to the waterfall area where my altar and array will be connected there.”

Moment of silence.

MORGUTH
(calmly; threateningly) “Go and do it, Sarumane!”

SARUMANE
(reluctantly obeys) “Yes, Morguth. Great one Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“Fetch some tributes from the crowds of Riverlothians before you! Those who are weak from working can be useful as tributes in the end.”

SARUMANE
(gradually) “Very well, Morguth. As you say.”

With that, Sarumane heads off as he goes to fetch some more tributes amongst the Riverlothian workers. Meanwhile, Morguth laughs out loud triumphantly at the construction site.

MORGUTH
(laughs out loud; to himself) “This will be the end! The end of the harmony of Riverloth! And the beginning…of a new Malador age!”

SCENE #124 – EXT – TREE GARDEN, RIVERLOTH – DAY EVENING
At the Tree Garden on the hill of the Tree, the TARDIS arrives close by. The TARDIS materialises, whooshing and grinding before it makes a loud thump as it lands. The doors open, and the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy step out, followed by Werna, Saloga, Milgi, Rondus, Galadio, Goliathon, Glorfini and the Fosters.

DOCTOR
“Here we are! Right on target for a change!”

BILLY
“There’s the Tree over there, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Billy! Very well spotted!”

Just then Nyssa gropes in pain for a moment. The Doctor approaches to check on Nyssa. Billy joins him.

DOCTOR
(concerned) “Nyssa? Are you alright? What’s wrong?”

BILLY
(concerned) “Is it the Tree again, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gropes) “Yes! It’s the Tree again, Doctor; Billy! I can sense it inside my mind already! It’s trying to communicate with me. I just know it!”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Hold on for a moment, Nyssa. Let me just get my Time Lord brain ticking in. I’ll place an energy barrier around your Trakenite brain for a while. We don’t want to be talking to the Tree just yet.”

The Doctor takes a moment to focus his mind on placing an energy barrier around Nyssa’s brain. A few moments later…

DOCTOR
“There! How’s that? Feeling better, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Yes. Yes, that’s much better. Thank you, Doctor.”

BILLY
“Are you sure, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes. I can still sense the Tree trying to communicate with me. But it’s getting faint now.”

WERNA
“Did you hear any words from the Tree just then, Nyssa? Did it…I mean did ‘she’ speak to you?”

NYSSA
(realises) “Yes! She did! I could hear faint words, but there was a message before the Doctor placed an energy barrier over my head.”

BILLY
(gently) “Well, Nyssa? What was the message then?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Just to say…that Morguth’s plans are advancing forward. Morguth has ordered Melkurs to escort Riverlothian workers to the waterfall area. They’re carrying the altar and array with them.”

SALOGA
(shocked) “Morguth’s done what?!”

MILGI
(shocked) “He won’t even let the Riverlothians rest for a bit?”

DOCTOR
(disturbed) “We haven’t got much time left.” (to Saloga; Milgi) “Saloga; Milgi! Take Rondus, Galadio; Glorfini and the Fosters with you. Head for the waterfall area to rescue the workers. I doubt you’ll stop Morguth’s altar and array being put into operation. But saving the workers is of vital importance! Do you understand?”

SALOGA
“We understand, Doctor! Don’t worry!”

MILGI
(to Fosters) “Come on, Fosters; Glorfini! Off we go! Over the bridge to the main land and off to the waterfall area. Right?”

GLORFINI
“Understood, Miss Milgi!”

MILGI
“Come on, Consul Protector; Consul Galadio! You two come too!”

RONDUS
“What?! Us? My and wife and I?!”

GALADIO
“Come on, Rondus! Don’t let’s get into another argument now!”

WERNA
(cheerily) “Good luck, mother; father! Hope I’ll see you soon!

RONDUS
(perplexed) “What’s that supposed to mean, our daughter?”

GALADIO
“Come on, Rondus! No time for arguing! Let’s go! Go!”

Galadio makes Rondus go with her, as they head off to follow Saloga; Milgi; Glorfini and the Fosters and make for the waterfall area. They make their way towards the bridge connecting the Tree hill and the main land. Once they’ve gone, the Doctor approaches the Tree with Nyssa; Billy; Werna and Goliathon following him.

DOCTOR
“Right! Now that we have the Tree before us…”

NYSSA
(finishes) “…where do we start, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa) “Precisely, Nyssa!” (to Werna) “Werna, can you make a start on disconnecting those wires from that Tree! Nyssa will help you!”

WERNA
(assured) “Yes! Of course, Doctor! I’ll use the ion bonder I have on me to disconnect the wires!”

Werna takes out her ion bonder from her pocket to show to everyone.

NYSSA
(astonished) “Now that’s a coincidence, Werna! I’ve brought my ion bonder with me too!”

Nyssa takes out her ion bonder from her pocket to show to Werna.

WERNA
“Good! Then that’s fewer hours to do the work on disconnecting the wires from the Tree, isn’t it Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“My thoughts exactly! Come on, Werna! Let’s get started!”

WERNA
“Right. We’ll start off by disconnecting one of these wires to the main tree trunk first.”

Nyssa and Werna kneel down to tackle one of the wires of the main trunk of the Tree. They begin to use their ion bonders on the wires, as they whir noiselessly away. Billy then approaches.

BILLY
“Can I help you too?”

WERNA
“I don’t think this is quite up your street, Billy.”

BILLY
“I can still help though. I can…I don’t know. Carry your little boxes you have in your hands…”

NYSSA
“Ion bonders, Billy. They’re called ion bonders.”

BILLY
“Very well, ion bonders. I can carry those for you when you’re not…working on the Tree that is.”

NYSSA
(giggles) “Billy, you are such a ‘silly Billy’.”

BILLY
“Sorry Nyssa? What did you say?”

NYSSA
“I said you’re a ‘silly Billy’, Billy.”

BILLY
(hurt) “Oh. You think I’m silly, do you?” (Pause) “Sorry. I didn’t mean to disappoint you, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“You haven’t disappointed me, Billy! I meant ‘silly’ as in an affectionate way, Billy. That’s all.”

BILLY
“Did you?”

NYSSA
“Yes, I did!”

BILLY
“Oh.”

DOCTOR
(gradually; interrupts) “Billy, there is something you can do for me! You and Goliathon in fact.”

GOLIATHON
(eagerly; booms) “What is it you want, Doctor? I’m eagerly willing to help you and the others out!”

DOCTOR
“Stay on guard, the pair of you! Make sure no Melkurs or Morguth come this way up the hill where we are. They are bound to, once Morguth realises we are sabotaging his efforts in his plans to control Riverloth.”

BILLY
(dejected) “Oh great! That’s all I need. Another guard job to do.”

NYSSA
(gradually; concerned) “Doctor? Those people in the induction cubicles that we saw earlier. Could we still save them? Are they still alive?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I don’t know, Nyssa. It depends on whether Billy’s sabotage damaged everything in the cubicles and cut off the life support.”

BILLY
“Oh dear. I hope I haven’t caused any deaths on Riverloth, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“I hope so too, Billy. I hope so.” (Pause) “Come on, Nyssa; Werna! Let’s get to it with disconnecting those wires, hey?”

Nyssa and Werna continue working away, using the ion bonders on the wires to disconnect them from the Tree.

SCENE #125 – EXT – GARDENS OF CORDOW, RIVERLOTH – DAY, AFTERNOON
At the gardens of Cordow, Saloga; Milgi; Rondus; Galadio; Glorfini and the Fosters arrive behind some bushes. They watch to see the Melkurs escorting the Riverlothians away to the waterfall area.

MILGI
“Yes, there’s the Melkurs alright! And they’re escorting those poor Riverlothian workers to the waterfall.”

SALOGA
“They’ve also got that altar and array with them. The workers are carrying it to the waterfall area. By the Tree, those look heavy to carry!”

GALADIO
“I can’t see why they would need so many people to carry the altar and array with them.”

RONDUS
(frustrated) “This is insane! Absolutely insane!”

SALOGA
“How are we to rescue them, Milgi? Do we just jump out and attack the Melkurs while we’re at it.”

MILGI
“No that’ll be too risky, Saloga. The Melkurs will instantly kill us before we get a chance to run out and take the workers with us.”

GLORFINI
(shrewdly) “I’m glad you think so, young lady. I don’t fancy having my brothers sacrificed on the spot to save those people by the Melkurs. It’ll mean too much death on my hands and for Riverloth.”

SALOGA
“So what are we going to do, Milgi?”

MILGI
(quietly) “Ssh! Quiet everyone!”

RONDUS
“Why what is it?”

SALOGA
(quietly) “Quiet, will you Consul Protector!” (to Milgi) “What is it, Milgi?”

MILGI
“I hear someone coming!” (Pause; urgently) “Get down everyone! Quick!”

Everyone gets down, just as Morguth walks by with the Melkurs escorting the Riverlothians to the waterfall area.

MORGUTH
(barks; impatiently) “Melkurs, my servants! Escort these workers faster to the waterfall! I want to get in touch with the Tree via the altar and array by tonight! Faster I say!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “As you command, our master!”

As the Melkurs obey their master, the workers are forced to walk faster whilst carrying the altar and array between them. Morguth walks on ahead. Once Morguth is gone, Milgi gathers everyone in the group.

MILGI
“Alright. Now this is the plan. We divide the group in two. One group goes to the waterfall to collect the prisoners one by one. The other group goes to the tunnel on the outskirts of Cordow to take the workers back to the Consul chamber.”

RONDUS
(scornfully) “You expect us to go through one of your rebel tunnels and take the workers back to our Consul chamber, young lady?”

GALADIO
“Of course she does, Rondus dear. This is serious, remember?”

SALOGA
“Who goes where though, Milgi? Who goes to rescue the workers and who goes to the tunnel to take the workers back to the Consul chamber?”

MILGI
(to Saloga) “Saloga, you’d better go to the tunnel whilst I go to the waterfall area.” (to Glorfini) “Proctor Glorfini, you and your Fosters come with me. I need help with your brothers escorting the Riverlothian slaves one by one back to the tunnel. Form a chain of Fosters to direct each Riverlothian in turn.”

GLORFINI
“And to provide covering fire on any Melkurs that attack us, I suppose.”

MILGI
“That’s also what I had in mind, yes.”

GLORFINI
“Consider it done, Miss Milgi.”

GALADIO
“And what about us? What do my husband and I do in this plan?”

MILGI
“You two go with Saloga. Help these people back to the Consul chamber. You two know where the Consul chamber is, So you’re the best choice.”

RONDUS
(quivers) “No, wait! Wait! I can’t!”

GALADIO
“Can’t what, Rondus?”

RONDUS
(quivers) “I can’t do this! I can’t go through with any of this plan!” (Pause) “Look, I don’t mind telling you people! But…I’m scared stiff! I’m terrified out of my wits by all this!”

SALOGA
“This isn’t a time to feel sorry for yourself, Consul Protector!”

RONDUS
(protests) “I’m not feeling sorry for myself, young man! I’m just…I’ve never been in a situation like this before. No Riverlothian has. You’re all young people, you have spirit. But me, I’m an old man. Well, older than you lot. And…well, I fear I’m going to let you down. I fear that I’m not going to live up to the task that all you people expect me to do.”

GLORFINI
“Consul Protector? With due respect sir, you’re not the only one that’s scared. I’m scared too, you see!”

GALADIO
(surprised) “You’re scared too, Proctor Glorfini?”

GLORFINI
“Yes. I’m scared out of my wits like Consul Protector Rondus is here.” (Pause) “But I go on! I carry on fighting for the sake…well…for the sake of the unity of Riverloth! For Riverloth to survive! For its people to live!” (to Rondus) “That’s what I and my brothers do, you see Consul Protector? We don’t just garden the groves or carry arms all day. We…we protect Riverloth in much the same way as the Tree protects us. And…again with due respect, sir…that is what you should be doing. Protecting us. Protecting Riverloth’s people…as a good Consul does.”

GALADIO
(to Rondus) “He’s right, Rondus! Proctor Glorfini’s right. We had to protect Riverloth as Consuls.” (reassuringly) “Don’t worry, my dear! Remember, I’m still with you when we’re going through this rescue of those poor Riverlothians! Please, Rondus dear!”

Moment of silence.

RONDUS
(gradually; sighs) “Very well. I’ll help you all out.”

MILGI
“Good. Then we’d better hurry. We’re wasting time as it is already.” (to Saloga) “Saloga, you go to the tunnel now with Consuls Rondus and Galadio. Glorfini, the Fosters and I will meet you there with the workers hopefully of course!”

SALOGA
“Right.” (to Rondus; Galadio) “Come on, you two Consuls! The tunnel is this way! I know where it is! Come on!”

GALADIO
“Yes! Come on, Rondus my dear! Let’s go after that Saloga boy!”

RONDUS
(sighs) “Just coming, just coming.”

Rondus joins Galadio, as they go to follow Saloga off to the tunnel on the outskirts of Cordow. Milgi meanwhile leads Glorfini and the Fosters.

MILGI
“Come on, Glorfini! Let’s make our way to the waterfall area!”

GLORFINI
“Right!” (to Fosters) “Come along, brothers!”

The Fosters obey, as they all make their way to the waterfall area. Milgi manages to get to talk to Glorfini to one side as they head off for the waterfall area.

MILGI
(impressed) “I didn’t know you had it in you, Proctor Glorfini! Being able to talk Consul Protector Rondus out of his quivering like that. And with such a speech too. I wouldn’t have known it!”

GLORFINI
(gradually) “To be honest with you Miss Milgi, it was the only way I could think of to get the Consul Protector to shut up! And to snap him out of it! I’m pleased that the trick worked!”

MILGI
“It certainly did. Let’s hope we’re lucky with saving those poor Riverlothians from the Melkurs and Morguth!”

GLORFINI
“This will be dangerous though, Miss Milgi. We’re not dealing with toys or statues anymore. These Melkurs are real and their robot bodies are real. They’ll kill us in an instant.”

MILGI
“I know this is dangerous, Proctor Glorfini. Yes, I know.” (Pause) “But the Doctor is relying upon us, isn’t he?”

Milgi, Glorfini and the Fosters carry on, as they follow behind the Riverlothian worker slaves escorted by the Melkurs to the waterfall area.

Bloody hell, this Morguth a total nutter, he’s off his trolley & completely power crazy who’ll kill or sacrifice anyone to become a all powerful god.

Another excellent chapter, i honestly thought you were going to kill off Billy & only teased Sarumane temporary stopping the process i was literally biting my nails, you do like to put the companions through the wringer.

Great dialogue & i like how the supporting characters are all coming into play, you weved this script like a game of chess Tim & placed all the pieces in the correct place which will no doubt deliver a cracking good checkmate.

    Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed Chapter 13 in ‘Part Four’ of ‘The Tree of Riverloth’!

I’m pleased I’ve impressed with you my depiction of Morguth as a villain. I really feared that Morguth wasn’t going to turn out well as a villain and that he was going to turn out as 2-dimensional. But so far, I seem to impress you with his power-crazed ambitions.

Oh really! I’m glad my tease with Sarumane stopping the procedure and Billy not getting killed got you on the edge of your seat. It’s my way of trying to make cliff-hangers really work when putting characters in peril. Did you like it when Billy was delirious and hysterically laughed when he was telling Nyssa she was beautiful?

I don’t really play chess as a game as I’m sure I’d find it complicated to play. But I’m glad you like how I weave all the plot elements in the story together and how I develop the supporting characters. What did you make when Rondus admitted he was scared and Proctor Glorifini was persuading the Consul Protector to pull himself together.

    Thanks for your comments, Simon.

Hope you enjoy Chapter 14 next!

    Tim. 🙂
