‘The Tree of Riverloth’, Part Four, Chapter 14

14. The Fight at Night

SCENE #126 – EXT – TREE GARDEN, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
It is now night-time on Riverloth. Back at the Tree Garden, Nyssa and Werna manage to disconnect the wires from the Tree using their ion bonders whilst Billy and Goliathon watch on guard with the Doctor.

NYSSA
“There! Done it! We’ve disconnected the wires from the Tree at last!”

WERNA
(worried) “The thing is though, have we disrupted anything with the Tree?”

NYSSA
“Yes I know what you mean. Our tampering with disconnecting the wires from the Tree with our ion bonders may have affected the telepathic field in some way. I can’t be sure. I sense nothing from the Tree at this point.”

WERNA
(to Doctor) “Doctor? We’ve disconnected the wires from the Tree now. What do we do next?”

DOCTOR
“Has there been any reaction from the Tree yet?”

WERNA
“Nyssa says she can’t sense anything from the Tree at the moment.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm. I’ll use my sonic screwdriver. To clear up any glitches with the wires when they were disconnected from the Tree.”

The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver, switches it on and it buzzes away noisily. This lasts for a short while.

NYSSA
(gradually) “Well Doctor? Any glitches?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Hmm. No. Seems to be okay, the Tree. It’s just…I don’t know it seems like…it’s sleeping.”

The Doctor switches off his sonic screwdriver and puts it back in his pocket before Billy and Goliathon come over to join them.

WERNA
“Or sulking. Perhaps we did more harm to the Tree than Nyssa and I realised when we disconnected the wires from it.”

DOCTOR
(distracted; to himself) “Yes. It could be. It just could be.”

BILLY
“What had you in mind to do next, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Well, I had in mind to get back to the Induction Chamber to reverse Morguth’s existence on Riverloth.”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Is that possible, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“It certainly is achievable. The life force Morguth stole from those Riverlothian victims is part of his existence. Nyssa and I saw that when we were carrying Billy out of the chamber when Morguth was struggling to get a grip on himself for life.”

BILLY
“I saw it too, Doctor.”

NYSSA
(gently) “Quiet, Billy. Let the Doctor finish.”

DOCTOR
(continues) “So Morguth will be out for another source of power. Sarumane will have collected new victims as tributes for Morguth to keep going and survive. Only he’ll have the altar and array to maintain his existence as well as establishing contact with the Tree and getting into the telepathic field more directly.”

WERNA
“But that means we’ll have to distract Morguth as well. How do we do that? Even Saloga; Milgi; my parents; Glorfini and the Fosters can’t manage that whilst distracting him at the waterfall area.”

DOCTOR
“They don’t need to do it, Werna. I’ll be the one to do it. I need to establish contact with the Tree and expand the telepathic field first.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Sorry Doctor, I was lost on that bit.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I’m going to take on Morguth and lessen his influence on this planet. To do that I need to be in mental contact with the Tree, whilst Morguth attempts to communicate and take over from it with his array. The array allows him access into the Tree’s telepathic field, you see.”

NYSSA
(protests) “Doctor, you can’t do this! You can’t take on Morguth on your own with the Tree inside the telepathic field!”

DOCTOR
“I can, Nyssa! And I must! It’s the only way I can think of to distract Morguth and to knock him out unconscious for a while before I can return to the Induction Chamber and reverse the process on Morguth’s existence. And to restore the victims made to give him life to normal.”

BILLY
(anxious) “Are you sure? I have a feeling this sounds too risky.”

NYSSA
(apprehensive) “Of course it is risky, Billy!” (to Doctor) “Doctor, you can’t face Morguth in the telepathic field with the Tree. Your mind will be burned out if you do this!”

DOCTOR
“My Time Lord brain’s highly capable, Nyssa! I can withstand pressures of any kind whilst confronting Morguth in the Tree’s telepathic field.” (adamant) “I’ve made up my mind, Nyssa! There’s no other way!”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
(gradually) “Very well. But I’m coming with you to help you. You’re not going into that telepathic field on your own!”

DOCTOR
(protests) “Nyssa, I can’t allow this!”

NYSSA
(determined) “You can’t stop me, Doctor! I have telepathic abilities as much as yours. I’m coming with you whether you like it or not.”

DOCTOR
(sighs) “Very well.”

BILLY
“And me! I’m coming with you too!”

DOCTOR
(surprised) “Billy!”

NYSSA
(scolds) “No Billy! You can’t come with us!”

BILLY
“I don’t want to be left out of this! If you two are going to face danger together in that telepathic field of the Tree’s, then I’m coming with you! I need to look after you two as much as you look after me!” (Pause) “After all, that’s why I wanted to join the TARDIS isn’t it? To be with you two! To keep you company! As my friends! You are my friends, aren’t you?”

DOCTOR
“Billy, this could be extremely dangerous!”

BILLY
“I know that. And so does Nyssa and you too. I’ve seen a lot of danger recently. But I can’t stand by and watch you two get into trouble.” (Pause) “Besides, I want to protect Nyssa as much as Nyssa wants to protect you, Doctor. That’s fair, isn’t it?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Very well, Billy. You may come.”

NYSSA
(protests) “But Doctor, it’ll burn Billy’s mind if he comes with us…”

BILLY
“It’ll burn your mind as well, Nyssa. And the Doctor’s. What are three minds to burn together going to mean amongst friends. Besides it might not happen like that. We always survive together in the end, don’t we?” (Pause) “Don’t we?”

NYSSA
(gradually; reluctantly) “Very well. You come with us, Billy. It seems that we all get into danger wherever we go.”

BILLY
“Yes. But it is better if we do it as a threesome, isn’t it?”

NYSSA
(reluctantly) “Yes. I suppose so.”

DOCTOR
“I’m very grateful to you both.” (to Werna; Goliathon) “Werna; Goliathon! You two are to stand on guard and watch out for any Melkurs that come this way on the hill of the Tree! Watch over us whilst we’re in telepathic contact with the Tree.”

WERNA
“Understood, Doctor.”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “We’ll protect you all the way, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Good, good.” (Pause; to Nyssa; Billy) “Well Nyssa; Billy. I suppose we should get ourselves ready, shall we?”

SCENE #127 – EXT – WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
At the waterfall area, the Melkurs escort the Riverlothian workers as they arrive at their destination. They place the altar and the array for Morguth at the foot of the waterfall in the river.

MELKURS
(in unison; menacingly) “Do not drop the altar and array in the river, Riverlothians! Our master Morguth wants them both secure at the foot of the waterfall. Any attempt to deliberately destroy the altar and the array will be dealt with!”

The Riverlothian workers reluctantly do as the Melkurs say, as they place the altar and array carefully in the river. Meanwhile Sarumane returns to meet Morguth who observes everything that goes on with the Riverlothian slaves and the Melkurs that guide them.

SARUMANE
“Morguth! Great one Morugth! It is I, Sarumane!”

MORGUTH
“Speak, Sarumane! What have you to say to me?”

SARUMANE
“Your servant Sarumane has obeyed you, Morguth! I’ve collected the tributes you needed. I’ve drained power and the life force from them with the remaining residual energy I had at my disposal. Following the recent disablement of the River Manipulator by the Doctor and his friends.”

MORGUTH
“That is good to hear, Sarumane. You seem to have redeemed yourself already. Well done, Sarumane.”

SARUMANE
“Thank you, Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“But be warned, Sarumane. This is not the last you’ve heard of me after your treachery earlier.”

SARUMANE
“I thought we’d settled that, Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“You settled it for yourself, Sarumane. I never settled anything with you. I never forget nor forgive those who try to disobey me!”

SARUMANE
(gradually; grudgingly) “The induction fusers should be charged up very soon, Morguth! With the life force and water particles from the energy absorbed from the tributes, the induction fusers should be fully powered up by then.”

MORGUTH
“I sincerely hope so, Sarumane. I sincerely hope so.” (Pause) “Have the power sent through into the waterfall immediately!”

SARUMANE
“But Morguth…”

MORGUTH
“I wish the power to be sent into the altar and array, remember? I must have my immediate contact with the Tree through the telepathic field as soon as possible. Also to build up my strength! I must be fully restored and stronger! Not show any vulnerability. Is that clear?”

SARUMANE
“Very clear, Morguth! You couldn’t have made it clearer!”

MORGUTH
“Good. Now be off with you! Attend to the waterfall controls immediately!”

SARUMANE
“Yes Morguth, great one! I hear and obey!”

With that, Sarumane goes off to make for the waterfall controls on the side of the waterfall.

SCENE #128 – EXT – CLOSE TO WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Meanwhile, on a hill close to the waterfall that is a few miles from where Morguth and Sarumane are, Milgi; Glorfini and the Fosters arrive in hiding to see what’s going on with the Riverlothians placing the altar and array at the foot of the waterfall.

MILGI
“There they are, Glorfini! There are the Riverlothians! Being treated badly by the Melkurs, see!”

GLORFINI
“Yes. It’s awfully dark at the moment, isn’t it?”

MILGI
“Well it would be when it’s night-time, wouldn’t it Proctor.”

GLORFINI
(realises) “Hey look! Look up there! Look up there, Miss Milgi!”

MILGI
“Why what is it, Glorfini?”

GLORFINI
“There! There’s Sarumane approaching the waterfall controls. He’s about to enter some buttons on the controls. What do you suppose he’s doing, do you think?”

MILGI
“You tell me, Glorfini! You were once in his employ remember?”

GLORFINI
(thinks) “Maybe he’s trying to direct power from somewhere.” (realises) “From the Induction Chamber, of course!”

MILGI
(realises) “Where he collected tributes from that group of Riverlothian slaves and drained them of their life force and water particles to give the additional power Morguth needs to stabilise his existence! That’s horrible, even to contemplate thinking about.”

GLORFINI
“If we’re going to help those people down there to get to safety, then it must be now! What do you suggest we do, Miss Milgi?”

MILGI
“You have your Fosters, Glorfini! And those Riverlothians seem to be dispersing or backing away from the altar and array after setting it in the river. It’s the Melkurs who are attending to those things now.”

GLORFINI
“So then. You want me and my brothers to go down and rescue the Riverlothians one at a time then?”

MILGI
“Yes. But do it quietly Glorfini! You and your Fosters! We don’t want to arouse any attention or attract the Melkurs to our attempts on rescue!”

GLORFINI
“Right. I’ll tell my brothers to whisper to the workers to come one at a time. That shouldn’t arouse too many suspicions from the Melkurs.”

MILGI
“Let’s hope so. Good luck, Glorfini!”

GLORFINI
“You too, Miss Milgi!”

MILGI
“I’ll stay here to direct the workers two at a time to head off to the tunnel where Saloga; Consul Protector Rondus and Consul Galadio are. That would speed up the proceedings without getting any attention.”

GLORFINI
“Understood.” (to Fosters) “Come on, brothers! Off we go! Down the hill we go to rescue the Riverlothians.”

FOSTER #3
“Right, sir.”

FOSTER #4
“Right behind you, Proctor.”

The Fosters follow Glorfini as they head off down the hill. Milgi watches Glorfini and the Fosters whilst also watching what goes on with the Riverlothians and Melkurs at the foot of the waterfall.

MILGI
“Let’s hope this works. By the Tree, I hope this works.”

SCENE #129 – EXT – TREE GARDEN, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
At the Tree Garden, the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to increase the telepathic field of the Tree for him, Nyssa and Billy to make contact with her. The sonic screwdriver buzzes away as he does this. Eventually, he stops using the sonic screwdriver and puts it back in his coat pocket. A moment of silence ensues. Nothing happens. Werna and Goliathon are still with the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy at the Tree Garden.

NYSSA
“Well, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “Well, I hoped…”

WERNA
“Yes Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(frustrated) “I just thought that if I used my sonic screwdriver, I might have been able to help the Tree to communicate with us easily after having the wires disconnected from it. Obviously not, it seems.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Doctor, there’s one thing that I want to know. How am I going to be able to get into contact with the Tree through this telepathic field? I mean…I’m not telepathically gifted like you or Nyssa are…”

DOCTOR
“Don’t worry, Billy. My Time Lord brain will enhance those dormant psychic cells in your brain to allow you to enter the Tree’s telepathic field without a problem once Nyssa and I are in it.”

BILLY
“Oh really?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Not something I usually do or recommend. But as it’s your wish to join Nyssa and me, it’s essential I enhance those psychic cells in your brain to hear the Tree’s voice.”

BILLY
“I didn’t know I had psychic cells within my brain.”

DOCTOR
“Just goes to show, Billy. There’s always a surprise wherever you go if you put your mind to it.” (impatient) “Oh come on, Tree! Why won’t you communicate with us?”

NYSSA
“Perhaps I should make contact with the Tree, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(surprised) “You make contact with the Tree, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes, why not? Since the Tree is not able to communicate with us at the moment, perhaps it’s ‘we’ who should communicate with her.”

BILLY
“Nyssa, I don’t think that’s a good idea. What about those headaches and psychic attacks you keep getting from the Tree.”

NYSSA
“I’m sure I can overcome them, Billy. With you and the Doctor’s help.”

DOCTOR
(concerned) “Are you sure you want to do this, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I’m positive, Doctor! The Tree knows me and has made mental contact with me on numerous occasions. I should be the one to make contact first. The Tree trusts me to communicate with her, I think.”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
“Alright, Nyssa. We’ll do it your way. We’ll communicate with the Tree first and you speak to her first.”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Billy and I will help you along. To project an energy barrier to protect your mind whilst making contact with the Tree. If that’s okay?”

NYSSA
“Yes. It’d save time for the three of us to be in mental contact with the Tree if we did it that way. I believe that’s a very practical suggestion.” (to Billy) “How are you on that, Billy? Do you feel comfortable with this?”

BILLY
“Yes. Yes I can do it. So long as the Doctor protects my mind whilst in communication with the Tree too.”

DOCTOR
“Don’t worry, Billy. I’m sure everything will be alright when I enhance the psychic cells in your brain.” (Pause) “Well then. Are we ready to do this?”

NYSSA
“Yes, Doctor.”

BILLY
“Yes, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(to Werna; Goliathon) “Werna; Goliathon! Still keep watch, you two! Okay?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Right, Doctor. Lady Werna and I will continue to keep watch as you say.”

WERNA
“Yes, Doctor! Now hurry! There isn’t much time!”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Very well.” (to Billy) “Billy, I’m about to enhance your psychic cells. Are you ready?”

BILLY
“Yes.”

DOCTOR
“Very well then. Here we go!”

The Doctor probes into Billy’s mind for a moment, as he enhances the psychic cells in his brain. Billy gasps for a moment.

DOCTOR
(concerned) “Billy, are you alright?”

BILLY
(light-headed) “Yes. I think so. My…my head feels…light. Got a strange giddy sensation all over me.”

DOCTOR
“That’s your psychic cells enhanced, Billy. Don’t worry! I’ve projected an energy barrier around your head as well as Nyssa’s when in communication with the Tree.”

NYSSA
(concerned) “Doctor, can you cope with that?”

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Of course I can, Nyssa. Now you go and do your bit! Go on! Make contact with the Tree!”

Nyssa takes a moment to focus on her mental contact with the Tree, supported by the Doctor and Billy helping her mentally.

NYSSA
(gradually; to Tree) “Hello? Tree of Riverloth! We need to speak to you! Please, Tree! Wake please! Wake! Wake! You’re the only one who can help us now! Help to stop the menace of Morguth and his Melkurs! Please Tree! Answer! Answer me!”

Moment of silence. Nothing happens.

BILLY
(whispers) “Doctor! Nothing’s happening! I don’t think this is going to work. I don’t think Nyssa is going to have much success with the Tree.”

DOCTOR
“Give it time, Billy. Give it time. Nyssa does get through with these things in the end, I’m sure.”

Suddenly Nyssa cries out in pain. She falls on her knees to the floor, with the Doctor and Billy joining her. They too cry out in pain. A whirring dizziness overcomes the TARDIS trio as they fade out of reality.

NYSSA
(in pain; gradually faded) “Doctor; Billy! The pain! I can feel it in my head!”

DOCTOR
(in pain; gradually faded) “Me too, Nyssa! Me too! Nyssa; Billy, stay calm!”

BILLY
(in pain; gradually faded) “I feel…I feel I’ve got pincers stuck in my head!”

SCENE #130 – EXT – TREE GARDEN, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Still in the Tree Garden, but seemingly distant from reality, the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy find themselves no longer in pain.

NYSSA
(surprised) “Doctor! Everything is faded around us!” (Pause) “We seem to be on some kind of astral plane.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. That’s what I thought, Nyssa. Most fascinating.”

NYSSA
“I’m glad we’re no longer in pain.”

BILLY
“Hey, Nyssa; Doctor! There’s Werna and Goliathon! We can see them! They seem to be worried about us. But they can’t touch us! I don’t think we’re really here anymore. In the Tree Garden.”

DOCTOR
“No. I don’t suppose we are…” (realises) “Of course! That’s it!”

NYSSA
“What, Doctor? What is it?”

DOCTOR
“Don’t you see, Nyssa; Billy! These are our minds talking! We’re not actually in our bodies at the moment. It’s like what you said, Nyssa. We’re on some kind of astral plane.”

NYSSA
(realises) “The telepathic field! We’re inside the telepathic field! All three of us!”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Most fascinating, as I said.”

TREE (V’O)
(bellows) “Doctor; Nyssa; Billy! Can you hear me?!”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Yes! We can hear you! Is that the Tree who’s talking to us?”

TREE (V’O)
“It is! I am the Tree! I am your friend!”

DOCTOR
“I’ve no doubt about it. We’re trying to help you! Save you and Riverloth from the terror of Morguth and his kind.”

TREE (V’O)
“I know. That is why I allowed you into my telepathic field. Morguth has his altar and array in place. He is about to make contact with me. To overpower me. To take my place as ruler of Riverloth.”

NYSSA
“Oh no! Doctor, I fear we might be too late.”

DOCTOR
“It does seem that way, Nyssa.”

BILLY
“Oh dear. Just when everything was going so well.”

TREE (V’O)
“But we can still defeat him, Doctor! We can still defeat Morguth! You, Nyssa and Billy! Your plan is ingenious, Doctor! I believe it can work.”

DOCTOR
“Plan? What plan?”

TREE (V’O)
“The plan to reverse the process on Morguth’s existence on Riverloth! In the Induction Chamber! I believe we can knock out Morguth before he has a chance to take me over. You three and me. We can defeat Morguth together and forever!”

DOCTOR
“Well, it seems you’re in the picture already about my plans. Well it’s good you know. Saves me having to explain it to you.”

TREE (V’O)
“We’d better hurry though, Doctor. There isn’t much time. I can sense Morguth about to lie on the altar and make contact with me through the array. It’s so close. So close.”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy become anxious, whilst inside the telepathic field of the Tree.

SCENE #131 – EXT – WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
At the waterfall area, Sarumane finishes pressing buttons at the waterfall controls as he returns to join Morguth at the altar. Morguth is about to lie down on the altar as Sarumane approaches him.

SARUMANE
“Great one! Great one Morguth, hear me!”

MORGUTH
(impatiently) “What is it now, Sarumane?”

SARUMANE
“The power is ready. The induction fusers are fully charged. The power is ready to be sent to you on the altar at the waterfall.”

MORGUTH
(impatiently) “Good, good. We’ve wasted too much time already. I shall lie down on the altar now.

Morguth then lies down on the altar. He breathes deeply as he waits for the power to feed into him through the altar.

MORGUTH
(gradually victorious) “My mental communication with the Tree is now arresting. Once I feel the power flow inside me from the waterfall into the altar from your induction fusers Sarumane, I shall be on my way to completing my objective. To take control of Riverloth and dispose of the Tree…forever and ever!”

SARUMANE
“Yes, Morguth. So I understand.”

MORGUTH
(enthused) “Yes! I begin to feel the power flow through me and enter into me already, Sarumane. You have done well! It’s working! It’s working!”

Morguth laughs out loud in triumph whilst on the altar. Meanwhile, on the banks of the river, Glorfini and his Fosters manage to get the Riverlothian slaves joining them one by one as they quietly get away from the Melkurs and Morguth.

GLORFINI
(whispers) “That’s it! That’s it! Take it steadily now! That’s it, come on fellow Riverlothians.” (Pause) “Only a few more left and we’re done!” (to Fosters) “Hey Fosters?”

FOSTER #3
“Uh, Proctor Glorfini! I fear we may have a problem.”

GLORFINI
“Why? What’s the matter, Foster?”

FOSTER #4
“The Melkurs! Don’t you see them, sir? They’ve spotted us! Already!”

GLORFINI
(distressed) “Oh no! Now we’re in for it, aren’t we? We’re caught!”

From a distance, the Melkurs report to Morguth on the altar.

MELKURS
(from a distance; in unison) “Our master! Morguth! The Riverlothian slaves are escaping! They’re getting away with Proctor Glorfini and his Fosters! They are helping them to escape at the banks of the river!”

MORGUTH
(from a distance; angrily) “No! They can’t escape! I may need more tributes for my current existence on Riverloth! Get after them, Melkurs my servants! Get after them at once!”

MELKURS
(from a distance; in unison) “As you command, our master!”

MORGUTH
(from a distance; angrily) “Kill Glorfini and his Fosters in the process as well, Melkurs! Anyone who opposes me and the will of Malador are disposable! Kill them! Kill them I say!”

MELKURS
(from a distance; in unison) “As you command, our master! We shall retrieve the Riverlothians, but kill the Fosters and anyone who stands in our way who opposes you! We will go at once!”

With that, the Melkurs head off and deal with the Riverlothian workers and the Fosters escorting them at the river bank.

FOSTER #3
(panics) “Proctor Glorfini!”

FOSTER #4
“What are we to do now, Proctor?!”

GLORFINI
(calls; out loud) “Everyone! Riverlothians! Flee for your lives! Everyone follow me and my Fosters! We’ll lead you to safety! Come on! Run!”

The Riverlothians scream, as they make a run for it out of the river and onto the river bank. The Melkurs open fire with their red eyes as they advance on Glorfini; the Fosters and the Riverlothian slaves. Some Riverlothians get shot as they run.

FOSTER #3
(protests) “Some of the Riverlothians are dead, Glorfini!”

FOSTER #4
(protests) “We were supposed to rescue all of them, Proctor!”

GLORFINI
“It can’t be helped, Fosters! We got most of the Riverlothians heading back up the hill with Miss Milgi guiding them back to the tunnel. We’ll have to go and join them!”

FOSTER #3
(protests) “But Proctor!”

GLORFINI
(urgently) “Come on, Fosters! Back up the hill we go! Run! Run!”

The Fosters follow Glorfini with the other Riverlothians, as they make their way back up to the hill to meet up with Milgi.

SCENE #132 – EXT – CLOSE TO WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Back up the hill, Glorfini and the Fosters meet up with Milgi and the other Riverlothians. Milgi is far from happy with Glorfini when he meets her.

MILGI
(angrily) “Glorfini, what went wrong? You and your Fosters were supposed to bring the Riverlothian slaves without getting caught!”

GLORFINI
“I’m sorry, Miss Milgi. We couldn’t help it my brothers and I. We were seen by the Melkurs by the time we got most of the Riverlothians away!”

Fire shots fly over Milgi; Glorfini, the Fosters and the Riverlothians’ heads. They duck down as they avoid the Melkurs’ hitting them.

MILGI
(frustrated) “And now we’ve got Melkurs right behind us! Anyway it doesn’t matter now! We have to move fast!” (calls; urgently) “Come on, everyone! Run! To the tunnel! Follow me!”

GLORFINI
(calls; urgently) “Yes! To the tunnel! Follow Miss Milgi! Quickly!” (to Fosters) “Fosters! Keep these people in line!”

Milgi, Glorfini and the Fosters run with the Riverlothians, as they make their way to the tunnel on the outskirts of Cordow.

SCENE #133 – EXT – WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Back at the waterfall area, Morguth is about to recommence his mental contact with the Tree on the altar with Sarumane watching him.

SARUMANE
“Well, now that the Melkurs are dealing with that problem, you should have no further interruptions…”

MORGUTH
(angrily) “Silence, Sarumane!” (realises) “I sense something!”

SARUMANE
“What? What can you sense, Morguth?”

MORGUTH
“I sense…I sense the Doctor and his companions Nyssa and Billy. They are inside the telepathic field. With the Tree already!”

SARUMANE
“What?! How can you tell?!”

MORGUTH
(angrily) “I am Morguth! I know everything!” (threateningly) “Do you doubt that, Sarumane?!”

SARUMANE
(sheepishly) “No! No of course not. Of course not, Morguth! What are you going to do then?”

MORGUTH
“I shall send some of my Melkurs there! To interrupt the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy’s mental contact with the Tree! To stop them!” (in mental contact; to Melkurs) “Melkurs! Hear me!”

MELKURS (V’O)
(in unison) “We hear and obey, great master Morguth!”

MORGUTH
(in mental contact; to Melkurs) “Melkurs! The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are with the Tree, mentally communicating with it via the telepathic field. Some of you go to the hill of the Tree and interrupt the proceedings! Stop the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy! Stop them immediately! Understand!”

MELKURS (V’O)
(in unison) “We understand, our master! We understand and obey! Some of us will go to the Tree now and stop the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy.”

Eventually, Morguth finishes his mental contact with the Tree.

MORGUTH
(satisfied; gradually determined) “Good, good. Meanwhile I shall conduct methods of my own to disrupt the contact between that heroic trio and the Tree! I’ll stop whatever they’re doing to try and stop me!”

SARUMANE
“And how will you do that, great one O Morguth?”

MORGUTH
(gradually) “It’s very simple, Sarumane! I shall break up the river banks at the hill of the Tree! Break them up…with my mind!”

Morguth falls back onto the altar and focuses his mind on the task using the array.

MORGUTH
(energised; viciously) “The power of your tributes is coursing through me, Sarumane! I can feel the power! I shall use the resources in my mind to break up the river banks of the hill of the Tree and make contact with the Tree in its telepathic field at last!”

Morguth laughs out loud, as a strange whirring occurs with power being generated into the altar.

SCENE #134 – EXT – TREE GARDEN, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Back at the Tree Garden, Werna and Goliathon are concerned for the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy as they are standing still in a trance.

WERNA
“It’s no good, Goliathon! We can’t break them out of it! The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy must be in mental contact with the Tree.”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “But how do we know that they are safe? Should we try to wake them out of it…?”

WERNA
(interrupts) “No, Goliathon! That might be too risky! We’d best leave them alone before anything else happens. Let’s see how they get on. They might wake up at any minute.”

GOLIATHON
(booms; distracted) “Lady Werna!”

WERNA
“What is it, Goliathon?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Look! Down there! At the bottom of the hill! At the river!”

Werna looks to see what’s troubled Goliathon at the bottom of the river. Rushing water echoes and crushing sounds occur.

WERNA
(shocked) “Oh my! The river! It’s breaking up the banks surrounding it! From the hill of the Tree to the main land!”

GOLIATHON
(booms; worried) “The river banks are decaying and eroding very rapidly!” (Pause) “This must be some evil work of Morguth’s, I’ve no doubt!”

WERNA
(worried) “You may be right, Goliathon! This could be Morguth’s work! Only he would cause this kind of destruction with his demonic-like powers!” (Pause) “It all seems very worrying, doesn’t it?”

GOLIATHON
(booms; worried) “I wonder what’s going on! If this is Morguth’s work, what is he trying to achieve?”

WERNA
“Perhaps this is something to do with the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy in mental contact with the Tree. Perhaps Morguth knows about it already and he’s trying to do something to stop it!”

GOLIATHON
(booms; distracted) “Lady Werna! Lady Werna!”

WERNA
“What is it now, Goliathon?!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Look, lady! Look down there! See what’s gliding through the river towards us on the hill!”

Werna looks to see what’s coming on the river.

WERNA
(gasps; shocked) “It’s the Melkurs! They’re gliding on water in the river towards the hill! They must be coming after us!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “So it is Morguth’s doing! All of this! The river crushing the river banks! The Melkurs making their way here!”

WERNA
“They’re nearly arriving at the crushed river bank! They’re about to approach us climbing up the hill!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Well, we’ll see about that! Won’t we?!”

Goliathon then steps forward in front of Werna.

WERNA
“Goliathon, what are you doing?! Get back over here!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “The Doctor told us to protect him and his friends from anyone trying to attack us! Including Melkurs and Morguth! Well that’s just what I’m doing! I’m going to take those Melkurs on, I’m going to protect the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy; and I’m going to protect you…Lady Werna!”

Werna looks back to the TARDIS trio at the Tree in the garden, still in a trance, whilst Goliathon readies himself for the Melkurs approaching.

WERNA
(despairingly; at trio) “Oh Doctor! Doctor; Nyssa; Billy! I don’t know what it is you three are up to with the Tree! But whatever it is, you’d better hurry!”

SCENE #135 – EXT – TREE GARDEN, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Still in the Tree garden on a different astral plane, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are still in mental contact with the Tree. They discuss the final arrangements in their plans against Morguth.

DOCTOR
“So, are we all agreed on what we have to do?”

NYSSA
“Yes. We will all use our mental energies with the Tree supporting us to knock out Morguth!”

DOCTOR
“Yes. It won’t be easy, but it’s worth a try!”

BILLY
“Are you sure our combined efforts in all our three minds will be enough to knock out Morguth for a while, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“No, Billy! I’m not sure! This has never been done before! Not in this case scenario anyway.”

TREE (V’O)
“Doctor! I hear the voice of Morguth! He is coming! He is coming to enter the telepathic field with us! Beware, Doctor! Beware Nyssa; Billy!”

DOCTOR
“Oh dear. Less time than I hoped for.” (breathes deep; to Nyssa; Billy) “Well, good luck, Nyssa; Billy! Hope I’ll see you both if we survive this.”

NYSSA
(to Doctor) “Same to you too, Doctor! Good luck!”

BILLY
(to Doctor) “Yeah good luck, Doctor!” (to Nyssa) “Good luck to you too, hey Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “Yes, Billy! Good luck to you too!”

TREE (V’O)
(interrupts; bellows) “He is here! Morguth, servant of Malador! Morguth the monster is here among us!”

At that moment, Morguth appears out of thin air before the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy in their minds within the telepathic field of the Tree. Morguth laughs out loud once he’s arrived.

MORGUTH
(laughs; triumphantly) “At last! I find myself here! Arrived in the telepathic field of the Tree! My victory and glory is assured! The glory of Morguth, Malador’s servant is assured!”

DOCTOR
(challengingly) “Not quite yet I’m afraid, Morguth!”

MORGUTH
(dismissively) “You and your friends are of no interest to me, Doctor! You cannot defeat me whilst you’re in the telepathic field of the Tree with me! I can destroy definitely whilst you’re here to face me!”

BILLY
(anxious) “I’m beginning to believe it myself now.”

NYSSA
“Billy, don’t listen to him! Don’t give in to your fears at this moment!”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “Morguth! The Tree defies your existence on Riverloth! You’re not welcome here!”

MORGUTH
“I shall make that decision myself, Doctor! I am the new ruler here!”

TREE (V’O)
(bellows) “No! You are an abomination! I say, you are not welcome! Back into the pit where you came from! Go!”

MORGUTH
(venomously) “You cannot denounce me, Tree of Riverloth! You are nothing! All of you are nothing! This is my hour! The hour of Morguth! The hour of Malador’s servant!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t you see, Morguth?! We defy you! Four minds against one! That includes the Tree, Nyssa, Billy and me! We will force you out of Riverloth whatever it takes!”

MORGUTH
(defiantly) “I am meant to take over Riverloth! To take over from the Tree! To take control of the River! That is the destiny of all who serve Malador! To control and spread evil throughout the cosmos! You cannot stop me!”

DOCTOR
(challengingly) “Want a bet, Morguth?! My friends and I with the Tree’s help are going to knock you out for good whilst you’re still in the telepathic field with us! We’ll deny you access to make contact with the Tree! We’ll cast you out! Back on the altar where you are now! At the waterfall area!”

MORGUTH
“You dare to challenge me, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “Yes! Yes I do challenge you, Morguth!”

NYSSA
(defiantly) “And so do I, Morguth!”

BILLY
(defiantly) “And so do I. Of course!”

MORGUTH
(viciously) “Very well! You shall suffer for your opposition against me! First thing I’ll do is to burn your minds! Whilst in this telepathic field with the Tree! Suffer terribly, you three! Suffer terribly!”

Morguth instantly attacks the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy as he probes into their minds with burning thoughts. The TARDIS trio cry out loud in pain.

BILLY
(in pain) “Oh! Here it goes! I can feel the burning inside my head already!”

NYSSA
(in pain) “Come on, Billy! Don’t give up now! Stay strong! Stay strong, Billy! Stay strong!”

DOCTOR
(in pain) “Yes! We must be able to overcome Morguth’s powers with the Tree’s power! We’ll use all the mental energy we have within us to cast Morguth out! Keep at it, Nyssa; Billy! Keep at it, you two!”

But the pain grows worse for the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy, as they soon cry out in agony with Morguth attacking them in the Tree’s telepathic field.

SCENE #136 – EXT – OUTSKIRTS OF CORDOW, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
On the outskirts of Cordow, Milgi, Glorfini and the Fosters run for their lives as they guide the Riverlothian workers to the tunnel back to the Consul chamber. They have Melkurs gliding in the air, chasing them.

MILGI
(pants; anxious) “Glorfini! Are those Melkurs still on our tails?”

GLORFINI
“Yes! They’re flying in the air now, Miss Milgi!”

Milgi, Glorfini and the Fosters keep on running with the Riverlothian workers. The Melkurs speed up, gliding through the air, as they open fire with their glowing red eyes, killing some Riverlothians in the process.

GLORFINI
“They’re gunning down Riverlothians in cold blood. Heartless scoundrels! I’m going back with some brothers to deal with those Melkurs!”

MILGI
(protests) “No Glorfini, no! The Melkurs will kill you instantly!”

GLORFINI
“My brothers and I will hold the Melkurs off long enough for you to get the Riverlothian slave workers back to the tunnel where Mr Saloga is. Don’t fret about me, Milgi! It’s more than my job’s worth!”

MILGI
“It’s a hopeless task, Glorfini!”

GLORFINI
“Please Miss Milgi! At least let me and the brothers try! I’ll still let you have some Fosters to guide the Riverlothians back to the tunnel! I won’t have you left abandoned whilst you go on, Miss Milgi!”

MILGI
(gradually; reluctantly) “Very well. Good luck to you, Glorfini!”

GLORFINI
“And you, Miss Milgi!” (to Fosters) “Alright! You three, my brothers! Let’s go back to deal with those Melkurs chasing us!”

The three Fosters follow Glorfini, as they head back the way they came to deal with the Melkurs chasing after them. Milgi meanwhile runs on, leading the Riverlothian slave workers to the tunnel ahead.

MILGI
(cries) “Come on everyone! We’re nearly there! The tunnel is not far now!”

The Riverlothians do as Milgi says, as they follow her to the tunnel.

SCENE #137 – EXT – OUTSKIRTS OF CORDOW, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
With Glorfini and his three Fosters, they quickly form a defensive barricade as the Melkurs come and glide towards them. The Melkurs stop firing with their red eyes as they advance on them.

FOSTER #3
“Proctor Glorfini! The Melkurs have stopped firing with their red eyes!”

GLORFINI
“Never mind that now, brother! We must make a stand!”

Glorfini and the three Fosters prepare their weapons, as they charge and aim at the Melkurs upon them. The Melkurs eventually stop gliding in mid-air. They look down on Glorfini and his three Fosters.

FOSTER #3
“They’ve stopped now, Glorfini! The Melkurs have stopped in mid-air.”

FOSTER #4
“They’re looking down on us! Like we’re nothing to them!”

GLORFINI
“Don’t think such thoughts, brothers! When I say, open fire!”

FOSTER #3
“As you say, Proctor Glorfini.”

The Fosters wait for Glorfini’s commands, whilst the Melkurs stay still in mid-air, looking down on them. A moment’s silence ensues.

GLORFINI
(barks) “Fire!”

The Fosters open fire with their weapons. But the shots fired hit a force-field surrounding the Melkurs in mid-flight. The shots backfire and hit the three Fosters, as they fall back to the ground dead.

GLORFINI
(shocked) “My brothers! They are dead! Shot by their weapons! Terrible!”

Glorfini then looks back up at the Melkurs.

GLORFINI
(to Melkurs; disdainfully) “So, you had force-fields around you to protect you when my brothers fired on you, Melkurs. Very good.”

MELKURS
(in unison) “You will die! We Melkurs and our master Morguth…will live!”

GLORFINI
“Well…at least I gave Miss Milgi and the Riverlothians some time.”

The Melkurs then fire upon Glorfini with their red eyes. Glorfini gasps in pain, before collapsing to the ground dead.

MELKURS
(in unison) “We will continue!”

The Melkurs then advance forward and glide on in the air.

SCENE #138 – EXT – OUTSKIRTS OF CORDOW, RIVERLOTH – NIGHT
Meanwhile, Saloga guides the escaping Riverlothian slave workers one by one as they get into the tunnel

SALOGA
“Come on, come on! That’s it! In you go! Don’t waste any time! You’ll be safe once you get through! Follow everyone else to meet Consul Protector Rondus and Consul Galadio in the Consul chamber.”

There are mumbles and groans, as the Riverlothian slave workers get into the tunnel one by one. Eventually, Milgi turns up and meets Saloga.

MILGI
(calls) “Saloga!”

SALOGA
“Milgi! You’re alright!”

MILGI
“Does everyone know where they’re going?”

SALOGA
“The first lot of Riverlothians that meet Rondus and Galadio will be escorted by them to the Consul chamber. Don’t worry, Milgi!”

MILGI
“I’ve got reason to be worried! We’re being chased by Melkurs!”

SALOGA
“What? But I thought you were…”

MILGI
“Proctor Glorfini accidentally let the Melkurs see him and his Fosters when they were getting Riverlothians to come to him! We lost some Riverlothians on the way with the Melkurs gunning them down!”

SALOGA
(shocked) “Oh no!”

MILGI
“It’s vital we get the rest of these people into that tunnel quickly whilst we’ve got a chance! And before the Melkurs get hold of us!”

SALOGA
“Where is Proctor Glorfini? Isn’t he with you?”

MILGI
(gradually; reluctantly) “Glorfini went back with three Fosters to hold the Melkurs back! To give us time! I don’t know. Perhaps he’s dead.”

Milgi and Glorfini look back to see the last few Riverlothians getting into the tunnel.

SALOGA
“Well Glorfini and his three Fosters aren’t with those last few Riverlothians getting into the tunnel. They must be dead.”

MILGI
“There aren’t any Melkurs yet! Glorfini did give us time for our people to escape! Come on, Saloga! Into the tunnel we go with the others!”

SALOGA
“Right! Come on!”

Saloga and Milgi run for it as they reach the tunnel, just as the last Riverlothian escapee slave worker gets in. Saloga climbs into the tunnel first, whilst Milgi looks back. The Melkurs then arrive around the corner.

MILGI
(cries) “Saloga! Get inside quickly! The Melkurs are here already!”

SALOGA
“I’m inside now, Milgi! Quick! Get inside and close the lid of the tunnel!”

Milgi climbs inside the tunnel after Saloga, just as the Melkurs advance closer to the entrance of the tunnel.

MILGI
“I’m inside!”

SALOGA
(shouts) “Quick, Milgi! Close the tunnel now!”

Milgi closes the lid of the tunnel, just as the Melkurs open fire with their glowing red eyes on them. But it is too late. The tunnel lid is shut and the Melkurs’ firepower has no effect. They turn to each other.

MELKURS
(in unison) “The Riverlothian workers have escaped! Morguth will not be pleased with us!”

A brilliantly written episode i easily visualized Tim, i love it when the Doctor & Co get emotionally invested in these stories & i like how all three of them are teaming up in trying to defeat Morguth who’s completely off his rocker.

Sarumane reverted to his usual self when the going gets tough he scouers away & lets Morguth overwhelm him.

Only Tim Bradley could write a story were a tree has a soul & make it sound believable, you have a knack at writing such excellent characters Tim & at pacing a story with various beats like drama, action, suspense, horror & i can’t wait to read the next chapter.

    Thanks Simon.

Glad you’re able to easily visualize this episode as you read it. I’m pleased you enjoyed Chapter 14 of this story.

Yes I try my best to show the best qualities of this TARDIS team as they’d risk anything to save others, even if it means facing the dangers like they do with Morguth in this story. I hope you’ll enjoy what happens in the next chapter with the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy facing Morguth on the hill at the Tree Garden, as it gets very tense indeed.

Sarumane is a pretty weak individual on Riverloth who is easily influenced by Morguth when serving him. He does gradually realise that Morguth isn’t what he hoped he’d be. But can he shake off his influence and be able to resist Morguth in the end?

I’m pleased you like how I’ve handled the Tree in the story and that you like how I’ve written the characters in the story. I’m pleased you like how I’ve put all the elements required to make these ‘Doctor Who’ stories by me. I’m glad they work well for you so far.

Look forward to hearing from you in the next chapter, Simon. Thanks for reading!

    Tim. 🙂
