‘The Tree of Riverloth’, Part Three, Chapter 12

12. Robot Immobilisers

SCENE #107 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
In the Induction Chamber, the Doctor and Nyssa struggle in their cubicles when they’ve been strapped into them by the Melkurs.

NYSSA
“Doctor! I can’t break free of my bonds! The Melkurs have strapped me in tight in this cubicle!”

DOCTOR
“I’m sorry, Nyssa. Sorry that it’s had to come to this.”

NYSSA
“This isn’t your fault, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“But I should have been prepared, Nyssa. I should have anticipated Morguth’s counter-measures to back-fire on our plans!”

MORGUTH
(gloats) “Yes, Doctor. You should have anticipated. Now as a consequence, both you and your friend will suffer under my victory!”

NYSSA
“What does achieving drainage of our bodily water and our life force do, Morguth? You’re fully materialised already. And you don’t need bodily water particles to achieve your mental connection with the Tree. You have this altar and cognitive aggrandizer array of yours set up for that.”

DOCTOR
“Exactly, Morguth! So why torture and eventually kill us in this way?”

MORGUTH
“You Doctor and you Nyssa have stronger bodily capabilities. Stronger than those of the Riverlothians to maintain my condition. Their life force and bodily water is weaker compared to yours. I need your life-force Doctor, and yours Lady Nyssa to achieve the stability of my existence.”

DOCTOR
“Ah! So you’re not fully formed as you thought, hey Morguth? Likely to drop off or fade away into non-existence at any minute.”

MORGUTH
“You hold your tongue, Doctor. Don’t provoke me as you wish to!”

Just then, the door opens and Saramane and Glorfini enter the induction chamber. They turn to address Morguth.

SARUMANE
“Great Morguth! Proctor Glorfini has some good news for you, great one!”

GLORFINI
“My Fosters have your fugitives brought to us by the Melkurs. Here they are, along with Consul Protector Rondus and Lady Galadio.”

SARUMANE
(to Glorfini) “Have the Fosters bring them in, Glorfini!”

GLORFINI
“Yes, Consul Sarumane.” (calls; to Fosters) “Fosters! Bring the fugitives in to the Induction Chamber!”

At that, the Fosters enter bringing Saloga and Milgi with Rondus and Galadio behind them. They’re forced into the centre of the room.

NYSSA
(cries) “Saloga; Milgi!”

MILGI
(apologetic) “I’m sorry Doctor; sorry Nyssa. We nearly got onto disabling the River Manipulator. We nearly had success!”

SALOGA
“But the Melkurs got onto us first. They just appeared out of nowhere! We’re very sorry, Doctor! We really are!”

DOCTOR
“It’s alright, Saloga; Milgi. It’s alright. I know you’ve done what you could. Don’t be downhearted.”

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Where’s Billy? Why is he not here with you?”

RONDUS
“Yes and where’s our daughter, you infamous rabble?!”

GALADIO
“Rondus, please!” (to Saloga; Milgi) “Please tell us, children! Where has our daughter Werna gone to?”

SALOGA
“We’re not children, Consuls. We’re grown up just like you actually!”

MILGI
“And we don’t know where Billy and Werna have gone to, Consuls. They managed to escape thankfully. But where they are now, we don’t know.”

DOCTOR
(sighs; relieved) “Hopefully, they’re safe.”

MORGUTH
(dismissively) “It does not matter, Doctor. Very soon those two will be caught, and you will have no one to help you escape and interfere with my plans!”

SCENE #108 – INT – TUNNEL, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Inside the tunnel, Billy and Werna are watching what happens in the Induction Chamber through the window they’ve found. They see the Doctor, Nyssa and everyone else there. They sit back away from the window, contemplating the next step.

BILLY
(anxious) “The Doctor and Nyssa are in danger! I must find a way to rescue them both!”

WERNA
“You haven’t got a chance, Billy!”

BILLY
(protests) “I must try! I owe my life to those two! I can’t let them suffer with their body water and life-force drained out of them!”

WERNA
“Those Melkurs and Fosters will probably shoot you down the moment you tried to rescue the Doctor and Nyssa. Take my advice and don’t bother, alright?”

BILLY
“I’ve got to try!”

WERNA
“Doesn’t all of this scare you, Billy? Don’t you feel that we can’t beat Morguth? He’s unstoppable isn’t he?”

BILLY
(gradually) “Yes, Werna. Yes I am afraid. Afraid that I might die by the power of that monster and his servants. Afraid that I’m not strong or brave enough to even rescue Nyssa and the Doctor.” (Pause) “But I’m determined to try. I said I must try. Therefore I must!”

WERNA
“Billy…”

BILLY
“And if you won’t help me, then I must go and do it myself. Goodbye, Werna! See you soon!”

Billy makes to crawl away back up the tunnel before Werna stops him.

WERNA
“Wait, Billy! Wait!” (Pause) “I’ll help you. You’ll need me to get past those Melkurs. Besides we need to get back to the River Manipulator Room. The only way to stop the induction process on the Doctor and Nyssa is to stop the power flow from the River into the River Manipulator. That way we’ll have a chance to stop Morguth killing them.”

BILLY
(delighted) “That’s a good plan of yours, Werna.”

WERNA
“Thank you, Billy.”

BILLY
“But we need to sort out the Melkurs as well. We need to find a way to stop them preventing us from succeeding with saving the Doctor and Nyssa in the River Manipulator. How do we manage to achieve that?”

Moment of silence, as Werna thinks on this.

WERNA
(gradually; cheerfully) “There may be a way to stop the Melkurs, Billy. From preventing us from achieving our goals and getting into the River Manipulator Room.”

BILLY
“Really? How?”

WERNA
“I have an idea!”

BILLY
“An idea? What idea’s that then?”

WERNA
“Come on, Billy. Let’s make our way back to the rebels’ hideout. I know that what I’m looking for is there. In that rugged place.”

BILLY
“What is it that you’re looking for then? Werna?”

WERNA
“Come on, Billy. Let’s get going! Back to the rebels’ hideout we go! Crawl forwards, Billy!”

Werna leads the way, as they make their way back to the rebels’ hideout. Billy watches her go, bemused, before eventually following Werna too.

SCENE #109 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Back inside the induction chamber, Morguth stands triumphantly over everyone in the room with him, including the Doctor and his friends.

MORGUTH
(gloats) “You are all insignificant! Everyone in this room is insignificant! My power shall be greater than anyone else’s! The power…of Malador given to me and to my Melkurs! Destined to rule Riverloth forever! To take over from the Tree and take control of the River!”

SALOGA
(bitterly) “Why don’t you get on with it then, you big bully?!”

MILGI
“Don’t provoke him, Saloga! Don’t’ give him any ideas!”

MORGUTH
“I will ‘get on’ with it as you say, Saloga son of Riverloth! The Doctor and Nyssa are part of my plans. They will have their water particles and life-force removed from their bodies. Then I shall be stable and continue to make my way forward to the Tree Garden on the hill of the Tree! I shall take over there and become the new master and ruler of Riverloth!”

GALADIO
“Pick someone else of your own size, Morguth! You have so much power! It’s unfair for us to even defeat you!”

MORGUTH
“No-one can defeat me, Lady Galadio! No-one can defeat the servants of Malador! Nobody!”

GALADIO
“That remains to be seen!”

RONDUS
“Don’t provoke him, Galadio! I won’t have you harmed by him, my dear lovely wife!”

DOCTOR
(shrewdly, to Morguth) “You seem to have planned all this in advance very well, Morguth! It seemed like we were expected all along. Nyssa, Billy and I. I wonder why that is. Perhaps you can tell us, Morguth!”

NYSSA
“I doubt Morguth will be so willing to tell us anything, Doctor.”

MORGUTH
(cruelly) “It doesn’t matter, since you two will soon die. I’ve been warned about your presence – you and your friend Nyssa that is – ever since the dinner gong rang amongst us servants of Malador!”

DOCTOR
“The dinner gong rang?”

MORGUTH
(bitterly) “You were marked for, Doctor! Don’t you remember saying so to Nyssa back on Traken? In the primeval period?”

NYSSA
(realises) “Doctor! Morguth is talking about the time when we defeated Kwuandaar on Traken!”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “What?”

NYSSA
“Don’t you remember what you told me, Doctor? Before you could stop Kwuandaar, he used the Source to summon other primeval beings back into this universe. Just like Morguth here. He caught your scent and lured you to Riverloth to take revenge on you on behalf of Kwaundaar!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Of course! Yes, I understand it now! It’s all coming back to me!”

MORGUTH
“At last you comprehend, Doctor! I’m so glad you do. It makes it a lot easier and saves time so I don’t have to explain it to you, doesn’t it?”

DOCTOR
(pleadingly) “Morguth, I won’t let you make the people of Riverloth suffer for your revenge on us! They don’t need to be harmed this way! Take Nyssa and me away from this place and kill us then…”

MORGUTH
“No, Doctor! That will give you and Nyssa time to escape so easily from my grasp! I’m not as easily gullible as you think!”

NYSSA
(defiantly) “Then we’ll stop you, Morguth! Whatever it takes, we won’t let you harm the people of Riverloth as easily as you wish!”

MORGUTH
“There’s nothing you can do to stop me, you two! I have you in my power already! You can’t escape from me!” (to Sarumane) “Sarumane! Begin to charge up the induction fusers! See that they’re connected to the Doctor and Nyssa’s cubicles securely.”

SARUMANE
(reluctantly) “Yes, great Morguth.”

With that, Sarumane walks over to the computer terminal to charge up the induction fusers at Morguth’s command.

GALADIO
(protests) “You can’t do this, Sarumane! You can’t allow the Doctor and Nyssa to be condemned to die like this! It’s cold-blooded murder!”

RONDUS
“Sarumane, as Consul Protector, I command you to stop what you’re doing and stop obeying this monster here! You know my authority! You will listen to me and not do this act!”

MORGUTH
(gloats) “My dear Consuls of Riverloth! You forget that Sarumane has committed murder already by killing Bonncere! What makes you think two lives like the Doctor and Nyssa’s will stop him committing any more murders like Bonncere’s?”

RONDUS
(barks) “Sarumane, I beg you to stop! Stop this at once!”

MORGUTH
“He belongs to me now, Rondus! Sarumane only serves me! I am his lord and master! Not you! Anything you say to him won’t make the slightest bit of difference!” (to Sarumane) “Will it, Sarumane?”

SARUMANE
(glumly) “No, Morguth. Indeed it won’t. Indeed it won’t, Morguth.”

MORGUTH
“Sarumane has a weakness for technology. That’s what becomes of those who become a scientist on Riverloth! The science always fails on the weak-minded!”

NYSSA
“That’s not true! The scientific mind is as strong as the spiritual. That’s what my people of Traken believe in.”

MORGUTH
(gloatingly) “And I suppose you’re an expert on all that, are you little Lady Nyssa of Traken?”

NYSSA
“As matter of fact, I’m not an expert. I happen to be a good learner. And had a good teacher like the Doctor to show me the extent of my beliefs.”

DOCTOR
(to Sarumane) “Sarumane, Nyssa’s right! You can overcome Morguth’s hold on you if you’d just try! Try to break through his hold on you, and let your mind think clearly.”

SARUMANE
“I’m sorry, Doctor. I must continue!”

DOCTOR
(pleads) “Sarumane, please! Listen to me!”

SARUMANE
“I must continue, Doctor! I must…continue!”

MORGUTH
(gloatingly) “You see, Doctor! Sarumane is exactly what I want. A Riverlothian puppet. Just as the Melkurs are Malador’s puppets. As well as my own.” (to Sarumane) “Carry on, Sarumane! Continue with your work! Charge up the induction fusers!”

SARUMANE
“As you command, great Morguth!”

Sarumane continues with his work, whilst Morguth laughs out loud maliciously. The Doctor and Nyssa become anxious as they remain in the cubicle, with everyone watching Sarumane.

SCENE #110 – INT – REBELS’ HIDEOUT, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
In the rebels’ hideout, Werna shows something to Billy in a chest on the floor. She opens it to reveal cylindrical devices contained inside.

WERNA
(proudly) “These are what my friends and I collected when we were scouting all over the court building from Consul Chamber to River Manipulator Room. Here, Billy! Have a look at one of them!”

Werna hands one of the cylindrical devices over to Billy. Billy takes one of them and inspects them closely to see what it is.

BILLY
(bemused) “Very impressive. What is it for though?”

WERNA
“That’s a robot immobiliser. We’ve got about two dozen or so in this chest. They are used by the Fosters to disable the Melkur robots when they’re in need of maintenance. This was when the Melkurs were simply guard patrols in the gardens of Cordow.”

BILLY
“I see. So you think these will help us immobilise the Melkurs when we try to get to that River Manipulator Room we want to get to?”

WERNA
“It’s bound to help us with dealing with the Melkurs, Billy. We can’t disable the spirit inside them. But at least we can shut off their robot bodies.”

BILLY
“What happens to the Melkur spirits though? Will they fly about freely above our heads once we’ve disabled their robot bodies?”

WERNA
“Hopefully they’ll be kept inside the robot bodies once we’ve disabled them. Containing inside the memory cortex. That’s a theory anyway.”

BILLY
“Well I hope it’s one that will work, Werna. Any good theory is what we need now to work well in practice.”

WERNA
“We’ll have to see if we can try one of these robot immobilisers out on one of the Melkurs. There’s a good consolation to this though, Billy.”

BILLY
“Is there?”

WERNA
“Yes! One Melkur will be distracted by one person when two people are trying to disable it.”

BILLY
“You mean…if I distract the Melkur to get it looking at me…”

WERNA
(interjects) “Or vice versa.”

BILLY
(continues) “Then you or I can have a chance of getting behind the Melkur and placing the immobiliser on its back. Thus shutting him down.”

WERNA
“There’ll be a short circuit once the robot immobiliser makes contact with the Melkur, Billy. But yes, that is about it. Two of us distracting the Melkurs will give us a chance of immobilising them.”

BILLY
“I agree. Let’s hope it works.”

Just then, a Melkur bursts into the rebels’ hideout through a wall. Billy and Werna stand back as the Melkur walks in through the wall to find them.

MELKUR
“You are the remaining two fugitives sought out by Morguth! You will come with me!”

WERNA
(surprised) “A Melkur! How did he find this hideout here?”

BILLY
“The Doctor was afraid something like this would happen. That’s why he pointed out the TARDIS was safe, remember?”

WERNA
“How we are going to escape from him?”

BILLY
(whispers) “How long does that immobilser take to disable the Melkur robot body, Werna?”

WERNA
(whispers) “A few seconds. Just switch the ‘on’ button, attach to it the Melkur from behind and then it shorts out the circuitry that’s inside the robot body.”

BILLY
(whispers) “Seems straight forward enough.”

WERNA
(whispers) “Shall you attach the immobiliser or shall I?”

BILLY
(gradually; whispers) “I’ll do it. You distract the Melkur whilst I’m doing it.”

WERNA
(whispers) “Right!”

MELKUR
“Cease this talking! You are to come with me! Right now!”

The Melkur advances forward to take Billy and Werna with him. Werna then steps forward, whilst Billy goes behind the Melkur

WERNA
“Hey, Melkur! Catch me if you can!”

But Werna gets caught in the grip of the stone hand of the Melkur instantly. She cries out and gasps in pain as it holds her.

MELKUR
“You cannot escape from me! I shall take you to Morguth now!” (Pause) “Where is the other one?”

BILLY
(defiantly) “Take this!”

Billy switches on the robot immobiliser and attaches it onto the back of the Melkur’s body. The Melkur then releases Werna. It shrivels up and shakes, with sparks protruding from inside the Melkur’s body. It then collapses to the floor, with tiny explosions going off from inside the Melkurs’ body. Moment of silence ensues. Billy and Werna approach the Melkur’s robot body cautiously.

WERNA
“We’ve done it! I think we’ve done it, Billy!”

BILLY
“Yes! It seems to have worked doesn’t it?” (Pause) “I can’t see any Melkur spirit flying around above the robot’s head!”

WERNA
“Perhaps the Melkur spirit is trapped and contained inside the robot body as I hoped it would be, Billy.” (Pause) “Perhaps we should get a move on and get to the River Manipulator Room.”

BILLY
“Yes! And hopefully save the Doctor and Nyssa! How many of these immobilisers shall we take?”

WERNA
“We’ll take six each. Use them sparingly when we have to in order to disable Melkurs.”

BILLY
“Will one group of Melkurs be immobilised with just one of these gadgets on one of them?”

WERNA
“I think so. Melkur robot bodies are meant to be a collective of one function. So it should connect them all in a high frequency magnetic field. Yes one immobiliser should be able to disable more than one Melkur.”

BILLY
“I hope you’re right, Werna.”

WERNA
“Come on! Let’s take what we need; make for the River Manipulator Room and rescue the others as you say, Billy.”

BILLY
“Right!”

WERNA
“We’ll use the tunnel we came out of to make our way back to the River Manipulator Room. Come on!”

Billy and Werna collect their six immobilisers, before they go off and leave the rebels’ hideout. They head for the tunnel in the wall to get inside and crawl through.

SCENE #111 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
In the Induction Chamber, Morguth groans out loud as he seems to be in agony. Everyone watches in astonishment.

SALOGA
“Something’s wrong with Morguth! He’s groaning!”

MILGI
“Yes, Saloga! We can see that!”

NYSSA
“What’s the matter with him, Doctor? Why is he groaning like this?”

DOCTOR
“I don’t know, Nyssa. It’s most odd.”

Eventually, Morguth stops groaning, as he looks up to face the Doctor and Nyssa.

MORGUTH
(angrily) “Your friends! Mr Billy and Lady Werna of Riverloth! They are opposing me! They have disabled one of my Melkur servants!”

NYSSA
“Disabled them?! How?!”

MORGUTH
“With a robot immobiliser! They immobilised one of my Melkur servants by switching off his robot body! Fortunately the Melkur spirit has freely escaped! But it has nowhere to go! It is lost in the reaches of space!”

RONDUS
“Our daughter Werna! She knows how to deal with a piece of technology! Unlike us parents of hers!”

GALADIO
“Good on her is what I say! Good on you, Werna!”

NYSSA
“Billy helped too you know, Consuls!”

MORGUTH
(angrily) “Enough! I will not have this opposition so freely made against me! Your two friends shall suffer for this, Doctor; Nyssa!”

DOCTOR
(ruefully) “Not so powerful as you seemed to think, Morguth! Perhaps you should take a break! Take a holiday! This business of ruling Riverloth has put too much pressure on you and made you stressed out!”

MORGUTH
(to Glorfini) “Glorfini! Glorfini, hear me! I command you!”

GLORFINI
“Yes, great Morguth?”

MORGUTH
“Go out and find those two fugitives, Billy and Werna! They’ll be making for the River Manipulator Room! They’ll try to disable Melkurs there! Apprehend them and bring them here to me in the Induction Chamber!”

GLORFINI
(challengingly) “Is that all, great Morguth?”

MORGUTH
(viciously) “Yes Glorfini! That is all! Now go off and do this thing! Quickly! Now, Glorfini! You and your Fosters!”

Morguth then causes Glorfini pain inside his head. Glorfini cries out loud.

GLORFINI
(cries) “No! Not this again!” (to Morguth) “Stop this! Leave me alone, Morguth! Stop it!”

MORGUTH
“Not until you obey my commands, Proctor Glorfini!”

SARUMANE
(to Glorfini) “Do as he says, Glorfini! He’ll kill you if you don’t.”

GLORFINI
(gradually; grudgingly) “Very well.”

Morguth eventually frees Glorfini of his pain. Once freed, Glorfini slowly gets up to his feet, before addressing his Fosters.

GLORFINI
(to Fosters) “Brothers! You come with me! To the River Manipulator Room!”

Glorfini and the Fosters head off, as they make for the River Manipulator Room to capture Billy and Werna. Morguth watches them go off.

MORGUTH
(with contempt) “He is a fool! That Glorfini, Sarumane! He dares to try and ignore me! I shall make him suffer for his insolence!”

DOCTOR
“You made him suffer already, Morguth! Don’t make him suffer again!”

MORGUTH
(retorts; angrily) “I did not ask for your opinion, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“You should! For what you’re about to do to us and for the rest of Riverloth by taking over the Tree with the altar and cognitive aggrandizer array is very dangerous indeed!”

MORGUTH
(to Sarumane) “Sarumane! Commence the induction process on the Doctor and Lady Nyssa. Commence immediately!”

SARUMANE
“The induction fusers will need charging up, Morguth! It’ll take a few minutes before they’re fully charged.”

MORGUTH
“I get impatient, Sarumane! How much longer must we wait?!”

DOCTOR
(to Sarumane) “Do you really want to do this, Sarumane?”

SARUMANE
(puzzled) “What?”

DOCTOR
(to Sarumane) “Do you want to be remembered as the Consul who murdered lives for the sake of being of service to Morguth? Is it worth it?” (Pause) “You can be so much better than this, Sarumane. If you’d let your heart and conscience speak to you rather than logic and your mind.”

NYSSA
“He’s right, Sarumane! Please listen to him! Don’t do this thing that Morguth has asked you to do! You’ll be condemning many lives on Riverloth if you continue working for Morguth! People will hate you in years to come!”

SARUMANE
“It was all…it was all for the good of Riverloth! To see that Riverloth survived the crisis we were having! To save us of the power we need.”

DOCTOR
“And look where you’ve ended up, Sarumane. As an underling or a dog working for Morguth. Doing his dirty work.”

MORGUTH
“Ignore them, Sarumane! They both just want you to save their own skins! So that they can be free from their cubicles. Don’t give them satisfaction.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Sarumane! Yes, we want to be free! Me and Nyssa! We want you to save our own skins! Yes, we want to be free from our cubicles, so that we can save others who are in need of help from the tyranny of Morguth! Don’t let Morguth have his way! Think of how you can help by saving Riverloth from the pain that is Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“Don’t hesitate in doing your work for me, Sarumane! Do as I say! Start the induction process immediately!”

Moment of silence.

MORGUTH
(impatiently) “Sarumane! What are you waiting for?! Start the induction process now! Do as I say?”

SARUMANE
“They’ve not fully charged up, Morguth! The induction fusers!”

MORGUTH
“Yes they are, Sarumane! The induction fusers were fully charged a long while ago. Now do as I say!”

SARUMANE
(hesitates) “I…I can’t….I can’t…”

MORGUTH
(stresses) “Do as I say!”

While this happens, Nyssa and the Doctor whisper to each other.

NYSSA
(whispers) “It seems to be working! Doesn’t it, Doctor! Morguth’s hold on Sarumane seems to be weakening now.”

DOCTOR
(whispers) “Yes. Let’s hope that it’ll lead us to some good, Nyssa. Let’s hope this sense of self-doubt on Sarumane’s part will make him realise what’s happened and in the hope that he’ll redeem himself.”

SCENE #112 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
In the River Manipulator Room, Billy and Werna enter before they see Melkurs turning around to face them.

MELKURS
(in unison) “You are the fugitives! You will be taken to our master Morguth! Do not resist!”

WERNA
(cries) “Now Billy! The first one! Aim for underneath the thigh on the left!”

BILLY
“Right!”

Billy dives down and places the robot immobiliser underneath the first Melkur’s thigh, switching it on as he does so. There is a click as the immobiliser is attached.

BILLY
“Done it, Werna!”

WERNA
(cries) “Duck out of the way, Billy! Get down!”

Werna and Billy duck out of the way, just as the Melkurs shrivel up and shake violently. Sparks protrude from the Melkur robot bodies, before they collapse to the floor. Tiny explosions go off from inside the Melkurs’ robot bodies. Moment of silence, before Werna and Billy get up off from the floor.

BILLY
“Well, that’s sorted them out!”

WERNA
“Well done, Billy! You certainly were brave doing that!”

BILLY
“Brave? I was scared stiff!”

WERNA
“Not to me, you weren’t!” (Pause) “Come! We must sort out this business with the shutting off the component inside the River Manipulator.”

Just then, running footsteps approach from outside the room. Billy goes to take a look out in the corridor.

BILLY
(panics) “Werna! Someone’s approaching from the corridor outside!” (realises) “It’s those Fosters! I think that Glorfini’s with them!”

WERNA
(urgently) “Quick, Billy! Lock the doors immediately!”

BILLY
“Right!”

Billy closes the doors of the River Manipulator Room before locking them up with the wedge lock. Werna attends to the River Manipulator.

BILLY
“There! I’ve put the wedge lock on, Werna! But I doubt it’ll hold out those Fosters for long!”

There is banging on the door from outside.

GLORFINI
(barks; from outside) “Open up in there! Lady Werna! We know you’re in there! You and Mr Billy! Open up in there!”

BILLY
(to Werna) “They seem very persistent, don’t they?”

WERNA
“Yes. Well we won’t have to worry about them with that door wedge you’ve propped up and locked on.” (Pause) “Now if I can just find the component we wanted to deactivate earlier.”

BILLY
“Do you remember which one it was, Werna?”

WERNA
“Of course. Component Kes-Dash-U-N-Zero-Dash-Seven-One-Six-Five. It’s underneath the River Manipulator.”

Werna searches for the component underneath the River Manipulator. The banging from outside keeps on going. Eventually she takes it out.

WERNA
“Ah! Found it!” (Pause) “Yes this is the one!”

BILLY
“How can you be so sure?”

WERNA
“Because it’s got the name and number of it written on the back. Component Kes-Dash-U-N-Zero-Dash-Seven-One-Six-Five. It says so here, see?”

BILLY
“Ah! Good point!”

WERNA
“Now, all I need to do is deactivate it somehow.”

The banging from outside gets louder, whilst Billy looks at a monitor screen in the room.

BILLY
(realises) “Hey, Werna!” (panics) “Werna, look! It’s the Doctor and Nyssa! In the Induction Chamber! They’re in trouble! They’re about to be killed or drained of water by Sarumane! See! He’s at the controls with Morguth!”

WERNA
“There’s Saloga and Milgi there with them. And my mother and father!”

BILLY
(panics) “We must do something to save the Doctor and Nyssa! But what? What can we do?”

WERNA
“Billy, you go down to the Induction Chamber! Rescue the Doctor and Nyssa if you can!”

BILLY
(reluctant) “What?! I can’t leave you here, Werna! Not with those Fosters about to break in here…”

WERNA
“I’ll be fine, Billy! I won’t be long with deactivating this component! Or with disabling the River Manipulator!”

BILLY
“But Werna…”

WERNA
(insistently) “Go, Billy! Go while you still can!”

BILLY
“But I don’t know what to do when I get down there! What can I do to rescue the Doctor and Nyssa?”

WERNA
(thinks; gradually) “Sabotage one of the cubicles in the Induction Chamber, Billy!”

BILLY
“What?”

WERNA
“Sabotage one of them and it’ll start off a chain reaction to shut down all the other cubicles!”

BILLY
“Really?”

WERNA
“Yes. Provided the one you sabotage is empty of course. Once you’ve done that, the power will fail and Sarumane won’t be able to initiate the induction process on the Doctor and Nyssa.”

BILLY
“Are you sure about this?”

WERNA
(sighs) “No, not really. But it’s worth a try, wouldn’t you agree Billy?”

BILLY
“Yes. Yes, of course it’s worth a try. It’s just…I’m a little bit scared. Going down on my own like that. Supposing I muck it up!”

WERNA
“You won’t, Billy! You’ve got to do this! You know you have to. It’s the only way to save your friends.”

BILLY
“Are you sure you’ll be alright here…?”

WERNA
“Yes, yes, of course Billy! Now go! Quickly!”

BILLY
(gradually) “Alright! I’ll come back for you!”

WERNA
“Good luck!”

BILLY
“And you!”

Billy goes as he runs off down the stairs from the River Manipulator Room to the Induction Chamber below. Meanwhile, Werna attends to deactivating the component from the River Manipulator.

WERNA
(to herself) “Now. To deactivate this component. I must work fast!”

SCENE #113 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Back in the induction chamber, Sarumane is still hesitating about whether to start the induction process on the Doctor and Nyssa or not.

MORGUTH
(threateningly) “Sarumane! If you do not do as I command you, I shall crush your head like an egg!”

Morguth then probes into Sarumane’s mind and causes him pain. Sarumane gropes before he cries out and falls to the floor on his knees.

SARUMANE
(cries; in pain) “Please, Morguth! Please! Don’t do this!”

MORGUTH
“Then do as I say, Sarumane! It is a perfectly clear and simple choice.”

Sarumane cries out more in agony, as Morguth probes further.

SARUMANE
(gradually) “Very well. I’ll do as you say!”

Morguth stops probing into Sarumane’s mind. Sarumane gradually approaches the control panel.

SALOGA
“Sarumane, don’t do it!”

MILGI
“No Sarumane, no!”

But it is too late, as Sarumane pulls the lever on the control panel. The induction process begins as the cubicles with the Doctor and Nyssa start to vibrate.

MORGUTH
(triumphantly) “Yes! Yes! It begins! It begins at last!”

The Doctor and Nyssa then cry out in pain, as power courses through their bodies.

NYSSA
(cries; in pain) “Doctor! It hurts! I feel…struck through! I can sense the water particles in my body about to be drained away!”

DOCTOR
(cries; in pain) “Keep calm, Nyssa! Keep calm! I’ll find a way out this! I’m sure I will!”

MORGUTH
(gloats) “You can’t escape from me now, you two! Everyone who opposes me shall be disposed of sooner or later!”

Morguth laughs out loud triumphantly and maniacally, as the Doctor and Nyssa endure such agonising pain in their cubicles.

SCENE #114 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, a fair distance away but still in the Induction Chamber, Billy comes down the stairs from the River Manipulator Room to rescue the Doctor and Nyssa. The Doctor and Nyssa’s cries of pain echo from a distance for Billy to hear them. Morguth laughs out loud maniacally from a distance too for Billy to hear.

BILLY
(quietly; anxiously) “The Doctor and Nyssa! It’s started for them already!” (bitterly) “And there’s that monster Morguth laughing away over there!” (Pause) “I must hurry. Now where can I find a cubicle that’s empty?”

Billy looks around to see if he can find a cubicle within the Induction Chamber that’s empty. He takes a while to do this.

BILLY
(quietly) “Oh it doesn’t matter. If I open one and find someone inside I can tell him or her that he or she’s free. Then they get out and I sabotage the cubicle.” (Pause) “Right! That’s it! Come on, Billy! Do it!”

Billy goes over to one of the cubicles and tries to open it. It’s difficult for him to open, as he tugs at the door.

BILLY
(frustrated) “Oh it’s no good! The door on this cubicle is sealed tight! It won’t budge!”

Billy sighs, almost about to give up. Then the Doctor and Nyssa’s screams of pain echo from a distance.

BILLY
“No, Billy! No don’t give up! There must be a way!”

Billy thinks, as the Doctor and Nyssa’s screams echo louder from a distance. Eventually…

BILLY
(realises) “Ah! Of course! There’s a button on the side of the cubicle! It must open the door! Of course, how silly of me!”

Billy presses at the button on the side of the cubicle to open the door. Nothing happens for a moment.

BILLY
“Oh, please! Please, let me be right!”

Eventually, the cubicle door swings open to reveal a giant man inside. Billy stands back to allow the giant man to exit from the cubicle.

BILLY
“Yes!” (to Goliathon) “Hello! You in there! Wake up! You’re free!”

The giant man slowly rises up from out of the cubicle. He steps forward, climbing out of the cubicle, and towering above Billy before him. He’s disorientated and dazed, having been inside the cubicle.

BILLY
“Goodness! You’re a big chap, aren’t you?!”

GOLIATHON
(booms, loudly) “Who dares summons me? Me, Goliathon! Who dares summons me?”

BILLY
(trembles) “Please! I need to sabotage that cubicle you were in! So you have to come out of it!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I, Goliathon, am free?”

BILLY
“Yes. That’s right! Here! Give me your hand!”

Billy helps Goliathon out of the cubicle, before he goes to sabotage it himself. Goliathon stands watching Billy about to sabotage the cubicle.

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I…I am grateful! How can I ever repay you, young man?”

BILLY
“You don’t repay me! Just go! Get out of here!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “But there must be something I can do to help?”

BILLY
(gradually) “Do you know anything about sabotaging a cubicle like this?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Err…no!”

BILLY
(sighs) “Me neither. This technology is so baffling to me! I don’t even know where to start on sabotaging it.”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Allow me! Stand back!”

BILLY
“But I thought you said…”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “I said ‘stand back’!”

BILLY
“Okay.”

Billy stands back to allow Goliathon to do his work. Goliathon growls as he charges forward and smashes his fist into the cubicle’s control panel. The control panel explodes, causing also the circuitry in the cubicle to explode as well. A period of explosions ensues from the cubicle.

BILLY
(gradually) “Yes! That is one way of doing it. Smashing your fist into the control panel like that.” (to Goliathon) “Thank you err…Goliathon, was it?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “My pleasure. Now where is that dratted scientist that put me in that cubicle? Sarumane, was it? Or was it Bonncere?”

BILLY
“Never mind! I’ll deal with our enemies. Now you go back upstairs to the River Manipulator! Werna is up there! She may need your help too!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Werna? Daughter of Consul Protector Rondus?”

BILLY
“Yes, that’s right! Now go on! Go upstairs and see Werna up there in the River Manipulator Room! Go!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Thank you for setting me free, young man!”

BILLY
“You’re welcome!”

Goliathon goes to make for upstairs and see Werna in the River Manipulator Room. Billy meanwhile sets off in another direction in the Induction Chamber.

BILLY
“Now! To rescue Nyssa and the Doctor! From Morguth!”

SCENE #115 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Still in the Induction Chamber, the induction process stops on the Doctor and Nyssa. The power goes down and the Doctor and Nyssa stop screaming in pain.

MORGUTH
(shouts; angrily) “No! This can’t be! Why is it stopped?!” (to Sarumane) “Sarumane, what’s going on?!”

SARUMANE
“I don’t know, Morguth! Something must have caused a fault in the inducer’s technology! Or something’s on low power!”

With the Doctor and Nyssa…

DOCTOR
(weakly) “Nyssa? Are you alright?”

NYSSA
(weakly) “I’m fine, Doctor. Really. Glad to be alive.”

DOCTOR
(weakly) “Yes. Me too. I can offer three guesses on who might have done this to save us.”

NYSSA
(weakly; happily) “I know already.”

With Saloga; Milgi; Rondus and Galadio…

SALOGA
“The induction process has stopped!”

MILGI
“Oh thank goodness for that!”

RONDUS
“I’m pleased to find that the Doctor and Nyssa aren’t screaming anymore!”

GALADIO
“Indeed, dear husband! But who could have done this?”

Just then, Billy enters the room. With Morguth and Sarumane…

SARUMANE
“I promise you, great Morguth! I will find the fault! I will find what has caused this induction process on the Doctor and Nyssa to stop!”

MORGUTH
(menacingly) “No need, Sarumane! He is here! The saboteur is here before us in this room!”

Everyone looks, including Morguth, to see Billy standing in the room.

MILGI
(cheerfully) “It’s Billy! He must have sabotaged the induction process!”

SALOGA
(pleased) “Good on you, Billy!”

NYSSA
(weakly; pleased) “I was right, Doctor! I knew it was Billy! I knew that he’d save us both!”

DOCTOR
“Me too, Nyssa. Me too. Billy was on my list of three!”

SCENE #116 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
Upstairs in the River Manipulator Room, Werna tries to deactivate the component, using an ion bonder to achieve the purpose. Sadly, her efforts don’t seem to be working at the moment. The banging on the door from outside by Glorfini and the Fosters still continues.

WERNA
(frustrated) “Come on, work! Deactivate it, you stupid thing!”

Werna tries harder with the ion bonder in her hand on the component. Still it doesn’t work, until she eventually switches it off. She inspects the component cursorily for a moment. The banging on the door from outside still continues.

WERNA
“This ion bonder surely should work on this component to deactivate it. I wonder why it’s not working.”

Just then, the front door of the River Manipulator Room begins to break open from the Fosters outside.

GLORFINI
(from outside) “Lady Werna! We’re coming to get you, you and Mr Billy! Don’t try to escape! There’s nowhere you can run to!”

Werna works again on the component with the ion bonder in her hand. Just then, Goliathon runs up the stairs from the Induction Chamber to meet her. Werna staggers on seeing the giant form of Goliathon.

WERNA
“W-W-Who are you? Where did you come from?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “Goliathon is my name! I came from downstairs in the Induction Chamber! Your friend set me free, Lady Werna!”

WERNA
“Billy set you free?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “He freed me from the cubicle I was in. I helped him to sabotage the cubicle as he wanted to do it so badly.”

WERNA
“So he sabotaged one of the cubicles in the Induction Chamber. Hopefully that should save his friends, the Doctor and Nyssa.” (to Goliathon) “Is Billy still down there, Goliathon?”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “He was when I left, Lady Werna.”

WERNA
“I’ll go down to help him once I’ve finished deactivating this component here, which is increasingly getting difficult to achieve.”

Werna uses her ion bonder again to deactivate the component. Eventually, she manages to deactivate it as it switches off instantly.

WERNA
(cheers; triumphantly) “It worked! It’s switched off! By the Tree, the component’s deactivated!”

GOLIATHON
(booms) “That is good, I take it.”

WERNA
“Of course, it’s good. I just need to place it back underneath the River Manipulator. Then hopefully, if I have time, I might be able to disable the River Manipulator completely…”

But before Werna can disable the River Manipulator, the Fosters burst in through the door into the room to apprehend Werna and Goliathon. They are led by Glorfini as they enter.

GLORFINI
“Fosters! Cease them! Six of you grab the giant in the room there!”

GOLIATHON
(fiercely) “I’ll show you who’s the giant [is]…”

But Goliathon doesn’t get any further, as he is quickly apprehended by six Fosters in the room who jump on him. The Fosters also capture Werna in the room too.

WERNA
(protests) “Let me go! Unhand me at once, Fosters!”

Glorfini makes his way towards Werna.

GLORFINI
(goads) “Very sorry about this, Lady Werna! But you are required by Morguth! And there’s nothing you can do to dissuade me!”

SCENE #117 – INT – INDUCTION CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, EVENING
In the Induction Chamber, Billy confronts Morguth with the Doctor, Nyssa and everyone else watching him.

BILLY
(calmly; pleads) “Morguth! Let my friends go! They’ve done you no harm! I don’t see why you should harm them! So let them go!”

MORGUTH
(laughs; scornfully) “You think that you can oppose me with your wittering words, boy!”

BILLY
(calmly; afraid) “I’m asking you nicely, Morguth! Let them go! Or else…or else I shall have to stop you!”

MORGUTH
(laughs; scornfully) “You? Stop me?” (laughs out loud; cruelly) “You are nothing! You have no value amongst the company you have formed with the Doctor and Nyssa! That is what you feel deep down! Don’t you, young Billy Walker?”

DOCTOR
(weakly) “Leave him alone, Morguth!”

MORGUTH
“You stay right out of this, Doctor! And that includes you too, Nyssa!”

BILLY
“I’m fed up with all this death and destruction! It was the Daleks and the Dwaxi lately. Now it’s you! I’ve had enough and I don’t need you Morguth to make it worse!”

MORGUTH
“You have nothing to threaten me with, Billy! I can kill you right now!”

BILLY
“I sabotaged these cubicles of yours, Morguth!”

NYSSA
(weakly) “Be careful, Billy. Be careful.”

MORGUTH
“I defy everything about you! You’re a mere mortal! I defy your morals and values! Nothing you say will sway me from my purpose!”

Morguth then breathes deep for a moment. Then he begins to growl furiously within.

MORGUTH
(angrily) “The power flow to the Induction Chamber has been stopped! The conduit is now receiving no power!” (accusingly; to Billy) “You did this, Billy! You did this when you sabotaged the induction process on your friends, the Doctor and Nyssa!”

BILLY
“That must have been Werna actually. She must have deactivated the component from the River Manipulator to switch off your power from upstairs to down here in the Induction Chamber.”

MORGUTH
“And she has already been captured! Yes, I can see it in my mind! Glorfini has done his job well! Capturing both Werna and her giant friend of hers.”

GALADIO
“Rondus! Did you hear that?! He’s got our daughter, Werna!”

RONDUS
(bitterly) “You scoundrel, Morguth! You scoundrel!”

SARUMANE
(interrupts) “Morguth, great one! If I may…”

MORGUTH
“What is it now, Sarumane?”

SARUMANE
“There is one cubicle still active with power. The one next to Nyssa on the right! Not all of the cubicles were disabled during Mr Billy’s sabotage.”

MORGUTH
(delighted; maliciously) “Excellent! That is excellent news indeed, Sarumane!” (Pause) “That means that we can have the boy to suffer and be killed for his sabotage of the cubicles!” (to Melkurs) “Melkurs!”

The Melkurs grab hold of Billy and drag him to the cubicle with power. Billy struggles in their grip.

BILLY
(protests) “Let me go, you Melkurs! You’re hurting my arms! Let me go! Let me go at once!”

DOCTOR
(pleads) “Please Morguth! Don’t do this!”

NYSSA
(pleads) “Have mercy, Morguth! Please don’t kill Billy out of anger!”

MORGUTH
(angrily) “Anger is all I know, little Nyssa! I am angry! And I want to see the boy Billy dead, dead, dead!!!”

Billy is forced into the cubicle by the Melkurs. He gets strapped in, as he struggles to break free.

BILLY
(panics) “Doctor; Nyssa! I’m strapped in!”

NYSSA
“Don’t kill Billy, Morguth! Please have mercy!”

MORGUTH
(angrily; to Nyssa) “I know no mercy, girl! I am evil! I want my evil and the evil of Malador to spread out throughout the whole cosmos! To have people suffer; be tortured and die under my thumb. Under my fire! And I’m going to start with him! The boy who messed up my plans in achieving victory!” (to Melkurs) “Melkurs! Close the door on the boy’s cubicle!”

MELKURS
(in unison) “As you command, our master!”

DOCTOR
“Morguth, no!”

The Melkurs close the door on the cubicle with Billy inside.

SALOGA
(protests) “For Riverloth’s sake, Morguth! He’s a kid!”

MORGUTH
“Sarumane! Begin the induction process on the boy!”

SARUMANE
(reluctantly) “Yes, Morguth!”

Sarumane presses a button to activate the induction process on Billy. The technology for the inducers begins to power up.

MILGI
(cries; angrily) “You monster, Morguth! You monster!”

NYSSA
(cries; to Sarumane) “Sarumane, please! Spare Billy! Spare Billy’s life!”

MORGUTH
(viciously) “Begin, Sarumane! Begin now! Drain out the life-force from this boy immediately!”

Billy trembles whilst he’s inside the cubicle, as he’s about to get fried.

Bloody hell Tim, i got no fingernails left as i found this chapter soooooooooo nailbitingly tense.

Billy really comes into his own here & again your knack for character drama allows us to see Billy is scared & the odds stacked against him but still continues to try & save his friend’s which i liked.

Morguth a nasty villian & i was disappointed Sarumane didn’t try to fight Morguths grip harder he just gives up & allows Morguth to overpower him.

I thought Doom Of The Daleks was intense but i think this story might just edge it, overall another fantastic written chapter & one of the most enjoyable Fifth Doctor story’s I’ve ever read, heard or watched.

    Hi Simon.

Very pleased you enjoyed Chapter 12 of this story. I’m glad you’ve now finished ‘Part Three’ and on your way to finishing reading this story in ‘Part Four’. I’m glad you’re finding this story nailbitingly tense! 😀

I’m pleased you’re enjoying Billy’s character development in the story, when he finds himself scared but determined to save his friends, the Doctor and Nyssa, despite the odds stacked against him. It’s all part of Billy’s progression from his scares in ‘Doom of the Daleks’ to finally accepting being a member of the TARDIS team.

Yes Sarumane does seem to allow Morguth to get his way with him, especially by the time we come to the cliff-hanger of ‘Part Three’. But Sarumane may still have a chance of redemption if he finds it in his heart to resist Morguth’s influence on him. I’m glad you’re finding Morguth a nasty villain in the story. I hoped that I wouldn’t make 2-dimensional as I was writing the story.

Oh really! That’s interesting! I’ll look to see your reaction to ‘The Tree of Riverloth’ by the time you finish reading it and whether it does top up on ‘Doom of the Daleks’.

Thanks Simon. I look forward to hearing from you again in the next chapter. Enjoy ‘Part Four’!

    Tim. 🙂
