‘ELAAN OF TROYIUS’ (TOS)
Please feel free to comment on my review.
This is a pretty sensational and sensual ‘Star Trek’ episode to watch from ‘The Original Series’. This is where things get to be rather sexy, as this is where Captain Kirk meets his match in ‘Elaan of Troyius’.
In this episode, the Enterprise ferries a rather spoilt but striking beautiful woman called Elaan from one planet to another. Elaan is from Elas and she’s arranged to marry a man of Troyius to stop a war.
France Nuyen guest stars as Elaan, who is a black-haired beauty and is of a royal family from Elas. Seeing Elaan put me in mind of Cleopatra for some reason and she’s a Dohlman of her Elasian family.
As I said before, Elaan is a rather spoilt and demanding young woman. She takes no excuses and is easily angered when things don’t go her way and is expected to be worshipped and pampered upon.
Elaan is against being married to a Troyian, who she describes as a ‘green-skinned pig’. The Elasians are savage warriors and they’ve been fighting their war with the Troyians for seemingly many years.
The marriage between Elaan and the Troyian ruler is meant to secure peace and to end the war between the two planets. Elaan is pretty reluctant and feels humiliated on having to marry a Troyian.
Elaan, as well as being an angry woman, is also pretty aggressive and violent. She keeps daggers and sometimes stabs people with them. She even attacks the Troyian ambassador Petri with her dagger.
It seems that nothing can ever please Elaan, especially when Uhura gives up her quarters for her to stay in whilst aboard the Enterprise. Elaan considers herself to be superior to everyone else with her.
Kirk eventually has enough of Elaan’s demands and behaving like a spoilt brat. He decides to teach her in learning about decent manners and courtesy, especially when it comes to her eating her food.
Elaan gets annoyed with Kirk trying to teach her and she even threatens him with a dagger on a few occasions. But nothing’s going to stop Kirk from aiming to be Elaan’s teacher whilst in ‘her quarters’.
However, there is a moment when the antagonistic relationship between Elaan and Kirk changes. Elaan at one point bursts in tears and Kirk touches them by wiping them off her cheek with his hand.
This is a mistake as Kirk becomes overcome by Elaan’s love potion within her tears. It then starts a love affair between Kirk and Elaan as they kiss each other. If only that happened in real life with us?
Now I admit I was quite moved by the romance being made between Kirk and Elaan in this episode. But it gets clear how much of an overdose we’ve had with Kirk falling in love with beautiful women.
From watching the episode, it’s clearly a way for Elaan to distract Kirk from his purpose in taking them to Troyius. Kirk however does keep it together when he does his duty as a captain of the Enterprise.
Elaan tries to keep being with Kirk when he’s on the bridge of the Enterprise ship. Kirk has to take Elaan away from the bridge to avoid being distracted, as she keeps telling him that she loves him here.
Before I end my review, I must mention about the Klingons making an appearance in this ‘Star Trek’ episode. One Klingon appears on the Enterprise view-screen and their ships attack the Enterprise.
‘Elaan of Troyius’ is an intriguing and unusual ‘Star Trek’ episode to watch from the series. I found it engaging and entertaining. It also sees Kirk having another beautiful woman to fall in love with here.
The DVD special features for this episode are as follows. On Disc 4 of both the original and re-mastered DVDs of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 3’, there is a preview trailer for this episode.
