‘Goblin War!’ (TV)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

Something I failed to mention in previous reviews. I first saw ‘Venom Returns’/’Carnage’ on ‘Spider-Man: The Venom Saga’ DVD. I also first saw ‘The Spot’ and this episode ‘Goblin War!’ on ‘Spider-Man: The Return of the Green Goblin’ DVD. I’ve fond memories in watching those ‘Spider-Man’ DVDs. 🙂

‘Goblin War!’ is an episode that features both the return of the Hobgoblin and the Green Goblin in tow. This episode also reveals to us who the true identity of the Hobgoblin is. At least in this 1990s animated ‘Spider-Man’ TV series since I believe the Hobgoblin’s had more identities in the comics. 😀

This episode also links to ‘The Spot’ as it continues with the time portal technology that’s been going on in the latter half of Season 3. When the time dilation accelerator returns to our universe, the Hobgoblin acquires it for himself. He hopes to use it and take over the Kingpin’s headquarters again.

Meanwhile, Peter and Mary Jane continue to enjoy their romantic relationship whilst Harry’s displeased they’re going out together. Felicia also becomes engaged to Jason Philips. Now with Peter and Mary Jane being together in the series, I’m happy about it since I like seeing these two together.

Yet, why doesn’t Peter tell Mary Jane that he’s secretly Spider-Man. I mean, I know he reveals it to her later on in the series, but in terms of the series turns out, I’m surprised he didn’t reveal it to her earlier. It isn’t like how I felt about Peter and MJ in the ‘Spider-Man’ film trilogy and in the PS4 game.

Anyway, the Green Goblin’s persona returns to haunt Norman Osborn again and he becomes the green villain on a glider again. Spidey tries to stop the Hobgoblin and the Kingpin who are attempting a bank heist before the Green Goblin barges in and fights the Hobgoblin in the Kingpin’s headquarters.

The rivalry between the Green Goblin and the Hobgoblin is interesting. The Green Goblin calls the Hobgoblin a fake whereas he considers himself the ‘one true goblin’. Ironic considering the Hobgoblin appeared in the ‘Spider-Man’ TV series first rather than the other way around like in the comics.

Felicia Hardy discovers to her horror that the Hobgoblin is actually…Jason Philips…or rather Jason Philip Macendale. She and Jason/Hobgoblin get kidnapped by the Green Goblin who plans to kill them. Thankfully Spider-Man rescues Felicia and Hobgoblin in time whilst the Green Goblin escapes.

‘Goblin War!’ rating – 9/10
