‘Head Over Heels’ (TV)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

In this ‘Spider-Man’ episode, Peter Parker is made to pair up with his new psychology lab partner Christina (voiced by Tara Strong). She’s a pretty gifted yet quirky sort of girl. She’s very into her science but is also besotted with Spider-Man, considering him her soul mate. Peter keeps quiet here.

When Peter and Christina work together on a science project, Christina uses her new ESP crown to read Peter’s mind. Unfortunately, the crown goes wonky and it jolts her brain with electricity. As well as causing her nose to bleed, the voltage alters Christina’s reality. It makes her see Spider-Man!

That is, she can see a 2-D version of Spider-Man in photos which are collected in her scrapbook. Spidey advises Christina how to get close to the real Spider-Man. This causes her trouble when she tries to commit suicide in order for Spidey to save her. She’s told off by him with risking her own life.

It’s amusing how Christina becomes convinced that she and Spidey are soul mates once he’s saved her. But Spidey pushes her away, telling her they’re not soul mates and that he doesn’t even know her. 😀 Christina is not one to give up however as she’s determined to bring her and Spidey together.

Meanwhile, MJ tries to get Peter to do a titbit sharing session with her. Essentially, she wants Peter to share a piece of personal information about himself to her. She’ll do the same for him. Peter struggles to express his true feelings towards MJ. He soon upsets her after she read his titbit for her.

It’s interesting to see the comparison of MJ and Peter sharing titbits with each other. MJ shares how as a little girl she hid in a room whilst her parents argued with each other. Peter shares he’s allergic to grouper – the fish. Not exactly the romantic or personal information MJ had hoped from Peter. 😀

Christina soon hears word that Spider-Man might be in love with MJ. She sets deadly designs on MJ when she kidnaps her and takes her to a mock wedding ceremony she has prepared. Christina tries to win Spider-Man’s affections once she’s in competition with MJ. It all leads to Christina’s downfall.

Incidentally, Max Dillon makes his first appearance in the new ‘Spider-Man’ TV series. He’s a student at ESU. You may not think he’s important, but he is in the next episode. ‘Head Over Heels’ is an enjoyable episode exploring Peter and MJ’s relationship and showing Christina get crazy over Spidey.

The DVD special features for this episode are as follows. On Disc 1 of ‘Spider-Man: The New Animated Series’, there’s a DVD audio commentary with director/executive producer Audu Paden; executive producer/writer Morgan Gendel; director Vincent Edwards and director Alan Caldwell. There’s also an ‘Amazing Spider-Facts’ info-text commentary option to enjoy.
