‘VENOM RETURNS’ (Part 1)
Here’s another two-part story in Season 3 of the 1990s ‘Spider-Man’ animated TV series. It features the return of Eddie Brock/Venom and it also introduces a new villain – Cletus Kassidy who becomes Carnage. Carnage is an offspring of Venom and is more deadly due to Cletus Kassidy being a psycho.
In terms of the movies, Cletus Kassidy appeared at the end of ‘Venom’ in a post-credits sequence. At this point, he’s due to appear in the sequel ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’. If this ‘Spider-Man’ two-parter was a movie, it would be superb to see Spider-Man fighting against both Venom and Carnage.
Helped by Iron Man and War Machine of course! Wait, what? Yeah, I’ll get into that more in this review. Anyway, in ‘Venom Returns’, Terri Lee and the police stop serial killer Cletus Kassidy from causing trouble in New York. Spider-Man helps out too. Soon Cletus Kassidy gets sent off to prison. 🙂
Meanwhile, Eddie Brock is attended to by psychiatrist Dr. Ashley Kafka at the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane. Interestingly, in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, Dr. Kafka at the Ravencroft Institute is a mad male German scientist. Here, Dr. Kafka is female and Eddie Brock’s love interest. 😀
Dr. Kafka helps Eddie through his trauma after becoming Venom in ‘The Alien Costume’. Elsewhere, Dormammu and Baron Mordo from ‘Doctor Strange’ return. Yes! Those two are back! Dormammu summons Mordo to get the Venom symbiote by redirecting the space probe it was on back to Earth.
Mordo helps Eddie Brock to get the symbiote he wants. Soon, Eddie becomes Venom again. Venom breaks out of the Ravencroft Institute and soon heads off to Stark Enterprises to recover an Inter-Dimensional Probe. It’s there we meet Tony Stark of Stark Enterprises and security chief Jim Rhodes.
As Venom attacks the Stark Enterprises building, Peter as Spider-Man soon swings in to stop Venom committing the chaos he’s causing. He’s soon helped out by War Machine, who is an ally to Iron Man. Venom becomes outnumbered, but Dormammu has everything in place for a second symbiote.
Apparently the Venom symbiote can reproduce. Soon its offspring latches onto Cletus Kassidy, who becomes the deadly Carnage. Carnage soon meets up with Venom, but Venom isn’t happy as they fight against Spidey and War Machine. This first episode ends with Carnage about to kill off Spidey…
‘CARNAGE’ (Part 2)
In the second episode called ‘Carnage’, Spider-Man is thankfully prevented from being killed as Venom stops Carnage. There’s bitter rivalry between Venom and Carnage throughout this two-parter. War Machine also prevents J. Jonah Jameson taking off Spider-Man’s mask to see his face. 😀
Eventually, Spider-Man has to stop the evil of Baron Mordo and Carnage as they prepare to unleash Dormammu from his Dark Dimension. Spidey acquires both the help of Iron Man and Venom to stop the evil villains. Watching this two-parter made me think how very insane a movie like this would be.
Imagine Tobey Maguire/Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Terrence Howard/Don Cheadle as War Machine vs. Topher Grace/Tom Hardy as Venom and Woody Harrleson as Carnage! As well as Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo and Dormammu voiced by Benedict Cumbertbatch!
Spidey struggles to fight against Carnage who steals the life-forces of people to provide the power to release Dormammu from his Dark Dimension. This includes people like Terri Lee as well as Dr. Kafka. Eddie Brock and Ashley Kafka are clearly lovers by the time we get to this second episode of the story.
Madame Webb also appears in this two-parter. She shows Spidey how things turn out for Eddie Brock who gets freed from his Venom symbiote by Dr. Kafka as well as Dr. Curt Connors. Webb also tells Spidey that he must keep his friends closer and his enemies even closer. Interesting philosophy!
Actually, Spidey works it out that he must have Iron Man who is his friend to help him out as well as Venom who is his enemy since he’s had contact with Dormammu, Mordo and Carnage. Eddie Brock soon reunites with the Venom symbiote and agrees to help Spidey and Iron Man to rescue Ashley. 🙂
The story’s climatic battle is pretty insane with Spidey, Iron Man and Venom fighting against Mordo and Carnage before Dormammu is unleashed to the world. Thankfully Spidey manages to…(sighs) ‘reverse the polarity’ (and he actually says that) to send Dormammu back into his dimension.
But in order to close the portal completely, Spidey and Iron Man have to send Carnage back too. Carnage almost brings Ashley Kafka along with him, but Eddie Brock/Venom sacrifices himself to save her. Overall, ‘Venom Returns’/’Carnage’ is a very gripping and exciting ‘Spider-Man’ two-parter.
‘Venom Returns’/’Carnage’ rating – 10/10
