‘A PIECE OF THE ACTION’ (TOS)

It’s ‘Star Trek’ doing 1920s gangsters in this episode! This is one of my favourites from Season 2 of the original ‘Star Trek’ series. I’m pretty sure William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy enjoyed this one!

The Enterprise visits the planet Sigma Iotia II where the spaceship Horizon was reported missing 100 years ago. Kirk, Spock and Bones beam down to the planet to meet up with one of the bosses there.

But once they beam down, they find themselves in a society that is modelled on 1920s Chicago full of mobs and gangsters. Kirk, Spock and Bones find it difficult when they get threatened by firearms.

I really like the idea of this alien planet full of humans that is modelled on 1920s gangster culture. It’s interesting how that society has degraded to this point and Kirk, Spock and Bones are surprised by it.

They meet Anthony Caruso as Bela Oxmyx, one of the bosses on the planet. Oxmyx wants to have Kirk’s ‘heaters’ which turn out to be their phasers. Kirk says ‘no’ and he and the others get locked up.

It was funny to see familiar Earth-like settings from 1920s Chicago including the gangster streets, the people in 1920s gangster fashion and carrying Tommy guns. It’s a lot like those movies from the 20s.

There’s also Vic Tayback as Jojo Krako, another one of the gangster bosses on the planet. Kirk gets captured and gets to see Krako. Krako too wants what Oxmyx wants and Kirk gives the same answer.

I could tell that William Shatner enjoyed doing this episode. As well as dress up in 1920s gangster gear, Kirk also manages to pick on the gangster slang of 1920s Chicago which makes him so hilarious.

Spock’s deadpan humour shines across in this episode too. He doesn’t pick up on the slang that Kirk manages to pick up on this episode. I found it so funny when he tries to do it and doesn’t get it right.

I enjoyed that scene where Kirk and Spock get to drive a 1920s roadster. Kirk isn’t used to driving a car like this and he doesn’t drive it well. Spock prefers him as a starship captain rather as a car driver.

I also liked that scene where Kirk and Spock get help from a tough kid played by Sheldon Collins. They distract the two guards to Krako’s hideout with the kid’s help who wants ‘a piece of the action’.

I found it funny when Kirk gets to talk to Scotty aboard the Enterprise via communicator and uses slang terms whilst Krako is in the room. Scotty gets baffled and bewildered by what Kirk says to him.

It was equally funny when Krako gets beamed up to the Enterprise by Scotty for Kirk and Spock to escape. Krako is fuming when he’s aboard the Enterprise and meets Scotty in the transporter room.

Kirk, Spock and Bones manage to get all the bosses together in order to try and persuade them to work together. But the bosses keep arguing and don’t believe that Kirk has a ship up there in space.

Eventually, Kirk gets to prove to the gangster bosses as a gunfight ensues outside. Soon the Enterprise gets to fire a stun beam of phaser power onto the gangsters and this knocks them all out.

‘A Piece of the Action’ is a very entertaining and enjoyable ‘Star Trek’ episode, seeing Kirk, Spock and Bones in a 1920 Chicago gangster-styled setting. It’s very unusual but was worth entertaining for me.

The DVD special features for this episode are as follows. On Disc 5 of the original DVD and Disc 6 of the re-mastered DVD of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 2’, there is a preview trailer for this episode.

Thanks for your comments, Simon. Glad you’ve enjoyed my latest ‘Star Trek’ reviews.

Yes Kirk’s making-up of the game Fisbin was funny and it was amusing when Spock tries to correct him on the game, but Kirk shuts him up.

I loved it when Kirk and Spock are driving in the 1920s car and Kirk is a bad driver. I just watched this episode after passing my driving test early in February. I’m glad I passed my test compared to Kirk who would have failed his in this! 😀

    Tim. 🙂
