‘BY ANY OTHER NAME’ (TOS)
Please feel free to comment on my review.
This is a ‘Star Trek’ episode where Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew get taken over by beings from another galaxy called Kelvans. It’s pretty intense as the Kelvans neutralise the Enterprise crew.
They do this by using boxes on their belts to freeze Kirk and his Enterprise crewmembers within a neutral field. They also use their boxes to turn people into cubes of stones that easily crumble away.
I was pretty anxious about Kirk and the Enterprise crew who get forced by the Kelvans to do their bidding. The Kelvans seem pretty merciless as they use methods by force in getting what they want.
Kirk, Spock, Bones and the others try to reason with the Kelvans led by Rojan. But Rojan and the Kelvans are determined to be conquerors since they apparently come from the Andromeda galaxy.
The Kelvans also want to use the Enterprise crew to help them get pass through a barrier to reach the other galaxy. The barrier looks pretty similar to the one from ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’.
I enjoyed the new CGI effects for the Enterprise travelling through space and reaching the barrier in the re-mastered version of this episode. They are pretty effective and help the episode visually too.
There was a shocking scene where after having tried to escape, Kirk witnesses two of his crewmembers get turned into cubes and one gets crushed. This means one crewmember has died.
That crushed crewmember happened to be Yeoman Thompson which was pretty shocking and disturbing. It means that the Kelvans are ruthless and determined to get their own way in this story.
I found it tense when Spock and Scotty suggest a way of stopping the Kelvins by blowing up the Enterprise through the energy barrier. But Kirk gets hesitant and he doesn’t blow up the Enterprise.
Warren Stevens guest stars as Rojan, the leader Kelvan in this episode. Rojan is determined to complete his mission and is impassive to showing compassion when he deals with Kirk and his crew.
Barbara Bouchet guest stars as Kelinda, a female member of the Kelvans. Kelinda is a beautiful blonde who becomes curious when Kirk starts ‘apologising’ to her with kisses and is fascinated by it.
The title of this episode comes from a line spoken by Juliet in the Shakespeare play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Captain Kirk quotes this line during the episode when he has a scene with Rojan and Kelinda.
I liked it when Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scotty, who are the remaining Enterprise crew members left, find a way to sort out the Kelvans. They try to find ways to simulate them within their human bodies.
Scotty gets one of the Kelvans to drink lots of alcohol in his quarters, including his very own favourite Scotch. It was funny to see Scotty getting drunk. Soon the Kelvan passes out before Scotty faints too.
Rojan also becomes jealous when he sees Kirk and Kelinda in romantic embraces and kissing one another. Kirk provokes Rojan to fight him which was intense as Rojan thrashes Kirk about the place.
The episode ends with Kirk managing to persuade Rojan to listen to him and getting him and his people to negotiate with the Federation. Rojan agrees as they go back to the planet they came from.
‘By Any Other Name’ is an enjoyable and tense episode. I like how Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scotty get to outwit the Kelvans. I’m sure all the Enterprise crew were all restored to normal after being cubes.
The DVD special features for this episode are as follows. On Disc 6 of the original DVD and Disc 7 of the re-mastered DVD of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 2’, there is a preview trailer for this episode.
