I love ‘The Trouble with Tribbles’! This is one of the most famous ‘Star Trek’ episodes ever made and certainly one of the funniest as it is considered to be a rare comedy episode for the Enterprise team.

In this episode, the Enterprise visits the space station K-7 near the Klingon border. Captain Kirk is order to protect a consignment of wheat called quadrotriticale which is essential for the colonisation of Sherman’s planet.

Whilst on the station, Lt. Uhura purchases a tribble from a man named Cyrano Jones. This is a cute furry little animal that makes pleasant sounds, but it does like eating and it can breed pretty quickly.

Very soon, the Enterprise ship gets crowded with tribbles breeding all over the place. This gets on Kirk’s nerves as he wants the tribbles off the ship. But the tribbles could help with solving a mystery.

I must have seen this episode for the umpteenth time as I can remember all the lines and how the story goes from start to finish. It’s a favourite and I laughed a lot as far as the tribbles are concerned.

The tribbles become a population explosion when Uhura brings one aboard the Enterprise and they’re born pregnant. Despite the tribbles being very cute and fluffy, they become a lot to handle.

I found it funny when Kirk gets lots of tribbles piled on top of him when he opens up the door hatch to the storage compartments. It’s one of the most famous scenes in the episode with Kirk in tribbles.

I also found it funny when Kirk sits on a tribble in his captain’s chair on the bridge and when he finds tribbles in his lunch instead of his chicken sandwich and coffee. This gets Kirk really annoyed on this.

I liked those moments when Bones is examining the tribbles in his sick bay and he comes to like them when Spock is being critical of them. I liked it when Spock says ‘they don’t talk much’ to Bones.

The Klingons also make a return appearance in this ‘Star Trek’ episode. The Klingons come to K-7 space station for a spot of shore leave and Kirk has to allow this. But will the Klingons cause trouble?

In this story, the Klingons are led by William Campbell as Captain Koloth. William Campbell made his first ‘Star Trek’ appearance in ‘The Squire of Gothos’ as Trelane. It was good to see him as a Klingon.

I liked that “My dear Captain Kirk”; “My dear Captain Koloth” exchange between Kirk and Koloth in the episode. There’s obviously tension between them, as they try to be friendly towards each other.

There’s also Michael Pataki as Korax, who is Koloth’s second-in-command during the episode. Korax causes trouble when in the bar with some Enterprise crew and he hates tribbles when he sees one.

A brawl occurs between Enterprise crew and Klingons when Korax makes insults about the Enterprise ship to Scotty. Scotty throws the first punch, thus the humans and Klingons start fighting.

The cast also includes William Schallert as Under Secretary Nilz Baris; Charlie Brills as Arne Darvin, Baris’ assistant; Stanley Adams as Cyrano Jones and Whit Bissell as the station manager Mr. Lurry.

I liked how the episode ends with Kirk and Spock getting Cyrano Jones to pick every tribble off the station which took take years. It was funny how Scotty got rid of those tribbles from the Enterprise.

‘The Trouble with Tribbles’ is a wonderful comedic ‘Star Trek’ episode that I love watching again and again. The tribbles are funny in the episode and I’d love to have one, though I would get swamped by them.

The DVD special features for this episode are as follows. On Disc 4 of the original DVD and Disc 5 of the re-mastered DVD of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 2’, there is a preview trailer for this episode.

On Disc 4 of the original DVD of ‘Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 2’, there’s a text commentary on this episode by Michael and Denise Okuda.

These are ‘More Tribbles, More Troubles’ from ‘Star Trek: The Animated Series’ and ‘Trials and Tribble-ations’ from ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’. Bonkers episode but enjoyable nevertheless, I love the scene when Kirk scolds his crew about who threw the first punch priceless.

‘The Trouble of Tribbles’ is one of my favourites and one of the best from ‘The Original Series’. It was funny when Kirk kept getting answers ‘I don’t know, sir’ about who threw the first punch. I felt sorry for him when Kirk learnt that Scotty punched the Klingons because of the Enterprise but not of him.

Thanks for your comments, Simon. Glad you enjoyed this review and the episode too.

    Tim. 🙂
