And welcome to Season 17 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series! This is the season where Douglas Adams (author of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’) is the script editor. It’s Tom Baker’s sixth season as the Fourth Doctor, Graham Williams’ third and final season as producer, and Lalla Ward’s first season as the second Romana. To start off the season, we look at ‘Destiny of the Daleks’, a four-part story by Terry Nation which features the Daleks of course, the return of Davros (played by David Gooderson) and introduces the robotic Movellans. ‘Destiny of the Daleks’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and Britbox.

This is one of my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ stories from the Tom Baker era and it was the first Fourth Doctor TV story I checked out on DVD in 2006. It’s a well-loved classic. This is ‘Genesis of the Daleks’, a six-part story starring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and Ian Marter as Harry Sullivan. As well as the Daleks, this story also introduces us to their creator Davros, played by Michael Wisher. ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and Britbox.

It’s time for ‘Death to the Daleks’, the third story in Season 11 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series, starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. We conclude the ‘Dalek War’ saga in the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series today by looking at ‘Planet of the Daleks’, a six-part adventure starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant. The story takes us to the planet Spiridon, where the Third Doctor and Jo team up with a group of Thals, as they try to stop an army of Daleks under a frozen mountain from being woken up. ‘Planet of the Daleks’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and Britbox.

This is a big one! It’s time to check out the epic 12-part ‘Doctor Who’ story called ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’, starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor and Peter Purves as Steven. You can listen to ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’ soundtrack on audio CD or Audible, and you can watch the second, fifth and tenth surviving episodes of the story in the ‘Lost In Time’ DVD collection. The story also introduces us to Nicholas Courtney (before he became the Brigadier) as Bret Vyon, and Kevin Stoney (before he became Tobias Vaughn in ‘The Invasion’) as the villainous Mavic Chen. Adrienne Hill also appears as Katarina, following her debut in ‘The Myth Makers’. It also features the introduction of Jean Marsh as Sara Kindgom. The seventh episode is a Christmas episode, would you believe? 😀 And the eighth to tenth episodes also feature the return of Peter Butterworth as the Meddling Monk.

It’s time to take a look at the only ‘Doctor Who’ episode from the classic TV series to not feature William Hartnell as the First Doctor, even though he is credited in the cast list. This is ‘Mission to the Unknown’, which serves as a prelude to the 12-part epic story ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’. There are two versions of this story. There’s the original, which can be heard on its TV soundtrack on an audio CD or via Audible, and there’s a new version of the story produced by the students of the University of Central Lancashire, which can be viewed on the ‘Doctor Who’ YouTube channel.

It’s time for one of the most exciting ‘Doctor Who’ adventures ever made in the First Doctor era called ‘The Chase’. The Daleks return to chase the First Doctor TARDIS team throughout time and space! This story also features the last appearances of William Russell as Ian and Jacqueline Hill as Barbara. It also features the first appearance of Peter Purves as new companion Steven (although Peter plays Mortin Dill in the third episode and plays Steven in the sixth and final episode of this story). It’s time for the second story of Season 2 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series as well as the second story to feature the Daleks on TV. ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ is a six-part adventure, starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor, William Russell as Ian, Jacqueline Hill as Barbara and Carole Ann Ford as Susan. It takes place in the middle of the 22nd century and it also features the final appearance of Carole Ann Ford as Susan. You can watch ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ either on DVD, Blu-ray or Britbox.
