‘Chieftain’s Caves’, Part Four, Chapter 14

chieftain's caves loch

14. “The Tides of Fortune”

SCENE #140 – EXT – LOCH EIL, GREAT GLEN – DAY, EVENING
Outside on the banks of Loch Eil, Nyssa and Billy have been summoned back as the Doctor calls for them.

DOCTOR
(calls) “Come on, Nyssa; come on, Billy! It’s soon going to be dark and it’s high time we set back for the caves!”

As Nyssa and Billy return, the Doctor and Jeremy are somewhat disgruntled.

JEREMY
“Not a very good catch hey, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Most certainly not, Jeremy! And I thought you said there were loads of fish in this loch!”

JEREMY
“I just can’t understand it! It usually is teeming with trout and salmon!” (Pause) “Unless a pike’s got them! Very ruthless eaters of trout and salmon, those pikes are!”

DOCTOR
(slightly annoyed) “Well it’s very inconvenient! I practiced throughout my seven hundred and fifty or so years trying to get my fishing right! And I come to a place where there’s very little fish!”

NYSSA
(interjects) “Doctor, please calm down will you?! You’re overreacting! You’ve had very little time to fish! Surely you could come back later!”

DOCTOR
(sighs) “You’re right, Nyssa. You’re right.” (Pause) “I’m sorry for being snappish. Just when you have so much to think about, you can hardly enjoy yourself can you?” (Pause) “Anyway! Let’s sort out those caves, shall we?!”

NYSSA
(concerned) “Is this wise, Doctor? The energy barriers surrounding that power chamber could be phenomenal! Even with your advanced mind, you can’t control the gemstones generating the power to create matter out of pure thought!”

DOCTOR
(gratified) “I very much appreciate the compliments, Nyssa. But my mind has far more powerful barriers than that power chamber has! Well…marginally speaking that is.”

JEREMY
“Should we use action rather than words and thoughts, Doctor? I’d like to find Iona and turn her back to the pretty lass she was than this horror she’s now become!”

DOCTOR
“She will become human again, Jeremy! I can assure you of that! But the power chamber is what’s responsible for creating the ordinary into extraordinary!”

BILLY
“We’d be walking into a death trap if Salvador’s there! If he’s as malicious and vengeful as you say he is, he’s not going to take any chances! He’s bound to find any way to kill us!”

NYSSA
“Billy’s right, Doctor! There must be some other way we can do this!”

DOCTOR
“There is no other way, Nyssa! Not one I can think of anyway! The psychic link between my mind and the source of the power chamber should be able to substantiate the balance between pure thought and causal reality!”

Whilst they talk, the waters from the loch start to bubble and grow louder and louder. This attracts the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy’s attention.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Doctor. That loch wasn’t bubbling before, wasn’t it?! Something’s obviously causing that to happen! Something’s about to emerge!”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa. I believe you may well be right.”

JEREMY
“Did you say Billy lad…that Salvador would find any way to kill us all?!”

Suddenly and without warning, something bursts up out from the waters of the loch. The Loch Ness monsters appears before them on the surface of the water. The Loch Ness monster roars away like mad as it looks down and sees the Doctor and his friends. The Doctor and his friends are terrified.

BILLY
“Yes, Jeremy! And I wish I hadn’t said it!”

NYSSA
“But it was in the caves when we saw it!”

DOCTOR
“And its physical projection is limitless! It must have been able to move about its meanderings once its boundaries are free!”

NYSSA
“And now it’s here! In the loch!”

DOCTOR
“Just as every Loch Ness monster should be! In a loch!”

BILLY
“But the Loch Ness monster’s not real! And this isn’t exactly Loch Ness, is it?!”

DOCTOR
“Doesn’t matter! This is Salvador’s version of Scotland! And he can conjure up anything he likes!”

Whilst the Doctor talks to Nyssa and Billy, the Loch Ness monster roars away wildly. Jeremy kneels down to the ground as he begins to tie a small log of wood that’s next to him to his fishing rod.

NYSSA
“Jeremy, what are you doing with that small log of wood?! And tying it to your fishing rod?! This is no time for fishing!”

JEREMY
“Aye but it is, Nyssa! But I’m going to be fishing with fire this time!”

NYSSA
“What do you mean, Jeremy?” (realises) “You’re now lighting that log with a fire-lighter! Why?!”

BILLY
(warns) “Doctor! That monster! It’s going to come straight for us!”

NYSSA
“And this time it’s going to succeed! Let’s run!”

DOCTOR
“No, wait! Both of you! Let me try something!”

The Doctor slowly steps forward towards the Loch Ness monster as it swirls about in Loch Eil.

NYSSA
“Doctor, what are you doing?!”

The Doctor hushes Nyssa up, whilst he comes face to face with the monster. The monster stares at him with morbid and unfriendly eyes.

DOCTOR
(calmly; defiantly) “You are the Loch Ness monster! I know that! But you are also a mythical creature created out of legend! You do not exist!”

The Loch Ness Monster roars again in the Doctor’s face.

DOCTOR
“I say to you again! You are a mythical beast! The Loch Ness monster is a legend! It doesn’t exist!”

Suddenly the Loch Ness monster lunges forward and the Doctor fall back onto the ground, caught by Nyssa and Billy. The monster loses his chance to devour the Doctor and roars away angrily as it swirls back ready for another lunge.

BILLY
“Doctor, are you alright?!”

DOCTOR
“I think so. He caught me off my guard!”

NYSSA
“What did you think you were doing, Doctor?! That creature could have eaten you!”

DOCTOR
“Oh, I was just…trying to use a method I used on another world…well…sort of another world. It didn’t work as I hoped on this occasion!”

BILLY
“Hadn’t we better run for it?! The Loch Ness monster maybe terrifying, but it can hardly catch us if we run for the caves while we’re at it!”

NYSSA
“It’s too late, Billy! Look! It’s coming again! It’s going to get us!”

The Loch Ness monster lunges forward, about to devour the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy. Just then, Jeremy steps in.

JEREMY
“Here, you great beastie! Take this!”

Jeremy uses his fishing rod to strikes at the Loch Ness monster with the small log of wood wreathed in fire attached to the string. The log hits the monster as it screeches out in pain. The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy stand up to see the monster writhe in agony and swirling its massive head around, before plunging back into the loch. The monster disappears under the loch’s waters. Moment of silence ensues.

BILLY
(amazed) “Good shot, Jeremy!”

JEREMY
“Thank you, laddie! No thanks required!”

NYSSA
(amazed) “You struck that fishing rod of yours with a log burnt in fire, Jeremy!”

JEREMY
“Aye! And it’s something I would never want to do again!”

Just then, the Loch Ness monster slowly resurfaces up from the waters.

BILLY
(anxiously) “Doctor! That monster’s coming back!”

DOCTOR
“Ah! I think it’s about time that we all…”

NYSSA
(finishes) “…Run?!”

DOCTOR
“Excellent suggestion, Nyssa!” (Pause) “Run!”

JEREMY
“Back to the caves, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Back to the caves, Jeremy! Come on!”

With that, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy run for it as they head back the way they came towards the caves. The Loch Ness monster growls as it watches the four fugitives heading back to the caves. The monster groans, losing his chance to get them again.

SCENE #141 – EXT – MONADHLIATH MOUNTAINS, GREAT GLEN – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, somewhere on the Monadhliath Mountains south of the great glen, war rages as the Middle-Age and Jacobean Scots continue the battle from Chieftain’s Caves. Swords clash and war cries echo as the Jacobeans strike their cutlasses against their opponents, whilst the Middle-Age Scots do the same. Hamish and Duncan are among the group from the Wallace era, fighting.

DUNCAN
(exasperated) “They never stop do they, Hamish?! They’d keep on fighting to get their own laws Longshanks makes! Don’t they ever give up?!”

HAMISH
“Let them keep on fighting us Duncan as we fight them! It’s the excitement that makes freedom bearable!”

DUNCAN
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that the English fight like Scotsmen! They even wear the same kilts as us!”

HAMISH
(shrewdly) “Well they’re not, are they?! You heard our orders from Wallace and Morag! We must keep on fighting! This battle is to end our long suffering! And we will not spoil that chance of freedom now!”

As the fight between the Middle-Age Scots and  Jacobean Scots continues, a teleport occurs as Racta aliens arrive with laser rifles at their disposal. The Racta soldiers charge on foot towards the Scots. They’re noticed by Hamish and Duncan.

DUNCAN
“Hamish! Do you see what I see, Hamish?! Strange men are approaching with strange weapons! What are they?!”

HAMISH
“I’ve no idea, Duncan! Let’s ignore them! It is our fight with the English we must deal with!”

Very soon, the Racta aliens open fire with their laser rifles on some of the Scots. Some of the Middle-Age and the Jacobean Scots get shot and collapse to the ground. This enrages the Scots that still survive who’ve seen this. They let out enraged cries, protesting at the Racta aliens approaching them. But the Racta aliens continue to fire with their laser rifles.

DUNCAN
(shocked) “They shot our men down! Look Hamish! They still keep on firing! Our comrades in battle are dead!”

HAMISH
(angrily) “Shoot us down like dogs, will they?! Well…a true Scot never died without a fight yet!” (to Duncan) “Are you with me, Duncan?!”

DUNCAN
“To the death, Hamish! To the death!”

HAMISH
“Aye, well we’ll worry about that when it comes to it! Let’s sort out these intruders to our fight! We’ll sort them out!”

All the surviving Middle-Age and Jacobean Scots cry out as they charge towards the Racta aliens approaching them. Many of the Scots get shot down by laser beams from the Racta soldiers. But soon the Scottish and Racta soldiers clash against each other in combat, with swords, muskets and laser rifles.

SCENE #142 – INT – SOUTHERN SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Back inside the Chieftain’s Caves, in the southern section, Alistair and Ewan; Cari and Ches; and Macmillan and Buchanan make their way aimlessly through the caves. As they walk, Ches and Cari discuss a certain matter with each other.

CARI
“So…you saw the options on this land of Kilwhillie’s without me then?!”

CHES
“Yes! I went with the boys and we came to Knockacolly! Lord Kilwhillie showed me the options! I think we ought to have a large lodging area. A big house like the castle Henry MacDonald has in Eilean Donan. We can have a banqueting hall; a billeting room; a left and right wing; about twenty bedrooms…”

CARI
(interjects) “You discussed the arrangements of the lodging with Lord Kilwhillie…without me, Ches?!”

CHES
“Of course, you can have the final say on the matter! About what sort of structure and type of lodge we should have on Knockacolly! But I would rather like to have some dungeons installed.”

CARI
“Dungeons?”

BUCHANAN
(interrupts; abruptly) “Quiet, you two! Quiet and listen!”

CARI
(puzzled) “Why what is it, Mr. Buchanan? Have you four spotted something?!”

MACMILLAN
“Do be quiet please, Mrs. Cari! Alistair and Ewan thought they heard something!”

All remain quiet as they try to listen to something. Low panting and heavy growling echoes nearby.

EWAN
“Hear that, Alistair! It’s the sound of a terrible beastie!”

ALISTAIR
“Aye that it is, Ewan! There’s no mistake!” (Pause; cries) “Look! It’s coming around the corner!”

Cari and Ches; Alistair and Ewan; and Macmillan and Buchanan stand back as the ogress appears before them. The ogress roars ferociously in a horrible rage.

MACMILLAN
“The ogress!”

CARI
(terrified) “Oh no! Not that thing again! Let’s get away from here!”

BUCHANAN
“It’ll be too fast for us, Mrs. Cari! If we run for it now, we’ll get no further than ten paces!”

CHES
“It must be about…about…eight feet high!”

MACMILLAN
(matter-of-factually) “Ten feet to be exact, Mr. Ches!”

CARI
(terrified) “Never mind you boys calculating its height! It’s going to eat us!”

The ogress roars as it lumbers forward.

EWAN
“No need to fear, fellow comrades! Alistair and I will sort it out!”

ALISTAIR
“Draw your sword, Ewan!”

Alistair and Ewan draw their swords as they make to strike at the ogress.

ALISTAIR
(shouts; to ogress) “Come to face and meet us, beastie!” (to Ewan) “Ready, Ewan?”

EWAN
“Ready, Alistair!”

ALISTAIR
“Right!” (cries) “Charge!”

With that, Alistair and Ewan charge forward towards the ogress. But before long, the ogress roars terribly in their faces. Within moments, Alistair and Ewan shudder and tremble in fear.

ALISTAIR
“Run, Ewan! Run for ye life!”

EWAN
“I am running, Alistair!”

Alistair and Ewan run off, scared out of their wits as they leave Macmillan, Buchanan, Ches and Cari behind with the ogress.

BUCHANAN
(shouts) “Mr. Alistair; Mr. Ewan, come back! Come back this instant! Don’t run away!”

CHES
(astonished) “They just ran like cowards!”

CARI
“Ches, stop it!”

MACMILLAN
(calls) “Alistair; Ewan! Will you please stop?!”

But Alistair and Ewan don’t listen as they’ve now gone far away and out of sight. Macmillan, Buchanan, Ches and Cari turn to see the ogress before them. They back away down where they came as the ogress growls and advances on them menacingly.

CARI
“It’s no use! It’s coming to get us!”

As the ogress advances towards them, Macmillan notices something in the cave walls.

MACMILLAN
(realises) “Wait! Look over there, James!”

BUCHANAN
“What is it, Alan?!”

MACMILLAN
“I see an exit behind us! Clear and bright! It must be half a mile away!”

CHES
“Do you think we can reach it?! Before that monster gets us?!”

CARI
“I’m willing to take my chances, if you boys are!”

MACMILLAN
“Well, James?! Shall we?!”

BUCHANAN
“I’m very doubtful we’ll ever get to the exit before this beastie catches up with us!”

The ogress roars again with terrible rage and Cari becomes even more terrified.

BUCHANAN
(continues) “But if everybody’s so determined to get out, I’ll concur!”

CARI
“Come on then, boys! Let’s go!”

Macmillan, Buchanan, Cari and Ches make a run for it as they head for the exit, whilst the ogress chases after them.

BUCHANAN
(puzzled) “I wonder! What’s a small loch doing here in this cave?!”

SCENE #143 – EXT – GREAT GLEN, SCOTLAND – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, on the outside of the Chieftain’s Caves where the exit is, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy return to where they escaped from the Loch Ness monster. They stop for a moment to catch their breath.

NYSSA
“This must be the way we came out of the caves, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“I hope so, Nyssa! You should know! You created it!”

NYSSA
(realises) “Oh yes! So I did.”

BILLY
“I’m certain we’re far from that Loch Ness monster!”

JEREMY
“Aye! Or the Loch Eil Monster since that’s where it’ll be residing. Or its neighbour Loch Linnhe. Or if it makes the way to Neptune’s Staircase to get to…”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “Yes! Well that evidently doesn’t really matter, does it Jeremy?! What matters is the fact that we have to get inside this cave; stop talking and find our way to the power chamber!”

JEREMY
“Now see here, Doctor…”

NYSSA
(interrupts; hushes) “Ssh! Quiet, you three!”

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “What is it, Nyssa?!”

NYSSA
(hushes) “Ssh! Do you hear that?! I heard a noise! It sounds like…screaming!”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy listen as they hear a female scream echoing from within the caves.

BILLY
“Yes! I hear it too now!”

They listen again as the scream echoes with a cry of…

CARI
(from within caves) “It’s onto us! We’re never going to make it!”

NYSSA
“Somebody’s trying to get out into the open! There are people in there and they’re about to come out!”

DOCTOR
(insistently) “Quick, Nyssa; Billy; Jeremy! Stay back!”

JEREMY
“Why, who is it?!”

Despite the question, the Doctor pulls Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy back away from the exit to the caves. Soon Macmillan, Buchanan, Cari and Ches as they run out of the caves and into the open. They pant for breath, exhausted and terrified out of their wits.

MACMILLAN
“Well! Thank goodness we managed to get out in time!”

CHES
“I’m thankful we even managed to stay alive!”

CARI
(realises; amazed) “Billy! You’re here!”

BILLY
(thrilled) “Cari! How glad I am to see you alright!”

Billy and Cari meet up with each other and reunite.

CHES
“Cari, my dear? Do you know this boy?!”

CARI
(to Ches) “Of course! This is the young friend I told you about! I was with him out on the mountains when I went on my walk! This is Billy!” (to Billy) “Billy! This is Ches of Roid, my husband!”

BILLY
(cheerily; to Ches) “Mr. Roid! I’m pleased to meet you at last!”

CHES
“Likewise, I’m sure.”

MACMILLAN
“Billy, laddie! It’s good to see you well and alive!”

BILLY
“Mr. Macmillan; Mr. Buchanan! Oh, I’m glad to see you two here!”

NYSSA
“Wait a minute! There’s something else coming out of the cave exit!”

They all to look to see ogress lumbering out of the cave exit. She roars out in terrible rage.

NYSSA
“The ogress!”

JEREMY
“Iona!”

DOCTOR
“I think it’s time for reunions later! Everyone stay back! Don’t move a muscle!”

Everyone, except Jeremy, does as the Doctor says, whilst Iona the ogress comes out of the cave exit. She advances towards them as Jeremy steps forward to her.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Jeremy?! Jeremy, what are you doing?! Get back!”

DOCTOR
“Jeremy MacDonald! I told you to stay back! When I said ‘everybody’, I meant ‘everybody’!”

JEREMY
“It’s my fiancée, Doctor! Iona! I can talk to her!”

NYSSA
“She won’t hear you, Jeremy! Her mind’s altered! She’ll be unable to understand your words in the form she’s in. She’s become primitive by nature! You can’t communicate in words you’ll want her to understand!”

JEREMY
(determined) “She’s my Iona! She’ll listen to me! I’ve got to help her!”

DOCTOR
“Jeremy, please don’t!”

But Jeremy doesn’t listen as he turns his attention to Iona as the ogress and tries to reason with her.

JEREMY
(gently) “Iona, my dear? It’s me, Jeremy! Your hunk, remember?”

Iona growls terribly, unable to understand Jeremy’s words.

JEREMY
(gently) “Iona! Please listen to me!” (Pause) “You’re not evil! You’re not a monster! You’re my dear loved one! You’re my fiancée!” (Pause) “We’re going to get married! I know it’s been hard, but we’re going to get married!”

Eventually somehow, the ogress’ groans and grunts die down. It seems that Iona is beginning to understand Jeremy. Iona softens to him whilst Jeremy talks to her.

JEREMY
(gently) “That’s right. That’s right, Iona.” (Pause) “We’re going to get married. We’re going to get you back to normal and everything will be alright. You just need to calm down and…”

Suddenly, without warning, Iona the ogress gets shot. She staggers back to the ground in reaction as Jeremy turns to see that Buchanan has fired his rifle at Iona.

CHES
“Good shot, Mr. Buchanan!”

CARI
“Ches!”

JEREMY
(angrily) “What do you think you’re doing, man?! That was my girl, Iona!”

DOCTOR
(to Buchanan) “There was no need for that, Mr. Buchanan! Jeremy was getting to her and you had to shoot her!”

BUCHANAN
“The man’s delirious, Doctor. How can a man have a relationship with an ugly creature as that? It’s utterly preposterous!”

JEREMY
(angrily) “You’re worse than my father! Jumping to conclusions!”

MACMILLAN
“You must admit Mr. MacDonald, it is rather odd!”

JEREMY
“Iona’s not an ogress, you fool! She’s an ordinary girl like young Nyssa is here! She’s an ogress because of that villain Salvador! And you Mr. Buchanan…had to shoot her cold-bloodedly!”

CARI
“Salvador?”

NYSSA
“Look everybody! Iona! She’s moving away! Back into the caves!”

Everyone watches as Iona the ogress slowly slumps her way onto the ground and heads back into the caves, groaning in agony. Jeremy steps forward to Iona apprehensively.

JEREMY
(calls) “Iona! Iona, wait come back! They won’t hurt you! I won’t let them!” (Pause) “Iona! Iona, please don’t…”

But it’s too late as Iona has already gone back into the caves, vanishing out of sight. Angrily, Jeremy turns to Buchanan.

JEREMY
(angrily; to Buchanan) “You see! You see what you’ve done now, man! You’ve scared her off! Just when I was about to reach her!”

BUCHANAN
“I was only thinking of the women! No harm was intended!”

MACMILLAN
“Aye! I daresay that’s true!”

Moment of bitter silence.

DOCTOR
“Yes, well anyway. We seem to have averted a somewhat tricky situation. The tides of fortune and all that. Now we’re here, let’s see if we can try to get along.”

NYSSA
“I agree.”

BILLY
(to Cari) “Oh Cari, I am pleased that you’re alright. I was worried about you. And I’m glad you managed to find your husband.”

CARI
“Oh Billy, you don’t know what a relief it is for me to see you safe! And with your friends!”

BILLY
“Yes!” (to Nyssa) “Nyssa, this Cari! Mrs. Cari of Roid, the one I was telling you about!” (to Cari) “Cari, this is my girlfriend! Nyssa of Traken!”

CARI
“How do you do, Nyssa? I’m so glad to meet you!”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Mrs. Cari. I’m pleased to meet you too!”

CARI
“You’ve got such a lovely young man here! You must be lucky to have him!”

NYSSA
“Yes! Even though I’m someone who doesn’t believe in luck, I am pleased to have Billy with me again!”

BILLY
“I should think so, dear.”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “Yes, well now we’re all friends here…shall we talk about what’s been happening?!” (to Ches; Cari) “First of all…who are you two, Mr. and Mrs. Roid? And why are you here on the planet Scotland?”

CHES
“Ah! I wondered when someone would ask us that.”

SCENE #144 – INT – EAST SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, inside the Chieftain’s Caves in the east section, Henry; Hugo; Maggie and the MacDonald clan gathering are being held captive by the Racta aliens that keep watch on them. Some of the Racta aliens march to and fro, whilst many of the MacDonalds in the gathering bicker and mutter with each other about what’s going on.

HENRY
(to MacDonalds) “Now keep calm, fellow MacDonalds! Angus and Miriam; Mr. and Mrs. Donald; Robbie; Lachy; Duncan; Hector; Archie; all of you! The key thing is not to panic! Everything will be alright! If we go down, we die fighting!”

Henry’s seemingly ‘encouraging’ words stirs up the anxiety levels of the MacDonalds more and more. They bicker and argue loudly. Henry sighs as he slumps back down on a rock with his wife Maggie and friend Hugo Kilwhillie.

HENRY
(agitated) “I tell them to keep calm and they refuse to listen to me! Why doesn’t anyone listen to me?!”

MAGGIE
“I think it’s best that you keep quiet, Henry! You’ll make it worse the way you’re behaving!”

HENRY
(protests) “I never make it worse!”

MAGGIE
“Henry, please!”

HUGO
“If you ask me, I’d say we’ve got more problems on our hands! Those Racta boys keeping guard on us! They never take their eyes off us! Not for a single minute!”

HENRY
(concurs) “Aye! I doubt that they like us very much!”

MAGGIE
“I’m sure help will come! We just have to be patient!”

HENRY
(agitated) “Oh I’m sure help will come, dear. It’s just a matter of knowing whether the help will come too late! Why are they keeping us here for heaven’s sake?! What is it they want?!”

HUGO
(realises) “Hello! Look out! Somebody’s coming!”

Henry, Hugo and Maggie look to see Mr. Pew enter,. Pew brings Mr. Bucc and Lord Budt with him. Pew then prods Henry, Hugo and Maggie with his rifle.

PEW
“Stand up, you three! Stand up and put your hands above your head!”

Henry, Hugo and Maggie reluctantly get up from the rock they’ve been sitting on. They stand up to face their Racta interrogators.

HUGO
(indicates MacDonalds) “What about the others?”

PEW
“They are of little concern to us! They do not play a part in what you are in!”

MAGGIE
“They may try to escape though!”

LORD BUDT
“You forget, Mrs. MacDonald! We have the place surrounded! No matter how hard you try, you cannot escape from us Ractas!”

MAGGIE
(realises) “Oh yes! I was forgetting!”

PEW
(abruptly) “Meet his Lord Budt…and our campaign-organizer, Mr. Bucc!”

Moment of silence.

LORD BUDT
“Mr. Bucc? Hadn’t you better get on with your ultimatum?”

MR. BUCC
“Of course, my lord.”

HENRY
“What ultimatum?”

Mr. Bucc steps forward as he addresses Henry MacDonald.

MR. BUCC
“We members of the Racta High Council are not happy with the situation you have created on your planet Scotland. We are disappointed with the way you handle your affairs. We are appalled at the manner in which you handle your troops and have them play your war games for your amusement, which is not a satisfactory start to the relations between Racta and Scotland.”

HENRY
(baffled) “What are you blethering on about, man?”

MR. BUCC
(continues) “We demand the return of our Racta associate, Ches of Roid, and his good lady wife Cari.”

MAGGIE
“We don’t know where Ches of Roid or his wife is! Ches was captured when the Jacobeans…”

MR. BUCC
(continues) “We also demand the termination of the feud occurring on this planet between the clan of the MacDonalds…and the clan of the Mackintoshes.”

HENRY
(protests) “Termination? Now see here…”

MR. BUCC
“We have a letter!”

Mr. Bucc then thrusts a letter into Henry MacDonald’s hands. Henry takes the letter, perplexed and baffled.

MR. BUCC
“That letter contains all the demands of the Racta High Council. If you agree to our terms, including the first two points I already mentioned of top priority, we shall agree to leave your planet and never bother you again. We shall take our troops off your planet and then peace will be resumed between Racta and Scotland.”

LORD BUDT
“Read it carefully, Mr. MacDonald. You’ll have to sign it in order to confirm full agreement to our terms.”

Henry eventually opens the letter and begins to read it. Moment of silence as Henry takes a while to read the letter.

MAGGIE
“Well, Henry dear?”

Henry then reads the letter again and fumes away.

HENRY
(angrily) “Outrageous!”

With that, Henry tears the letter up in half before he tears it in half again. He then throws the torn-up letter onto the ground and stamps his feet on the remains. He then looks back up at Mr. Bucc and Lord Budt defiantly.

HENRY
(defiantly) “I refuse to co-operate whatsoever! I will not have my affairs meddled with by you or anyone else! I am Chieftain of the MacDonalds and soon will be Chieftain of Scotland, if you have a care!”

Moment of silence as Mr. Bucc quietly confers with Lord Budt.

MR. BUCC
(quietly) “Well, my lord. As you can see, this is quite serious!”

LORD BUDT
“Indeed, Mr. Bucc. You know now what you’ll have to do.”

Mr. Bucc acknowledges Lord Budt’s instructions as he returns his attention back to Henry.

MR. BUCC
(firmly) “Very well, Mr. MacDonald. Since you refuse to co-operate with the terms of Racta, you and your gathering shall remain here as prisoners.”

HUGO
(shocked) “Prisoners?!”

HENRY
(agitated; protests) “Now listen here! I will not be treated this way…”

MR. BUCC
(interrupts) “We asked you kindly to accept our terms and you respond with hostility and violence! Therefore we shall take matters into our own hands! You and your gathering will remain in these caves…for the rest of your natural lives!”

SCENE #145 – EXT – GREAT GLEN, SCOTLAND – DAY, EVENING
Back outside the exit to the Chieftain’s Caves created by Nyssa, the Doctor has been interrogating Ches of Roid after he and Cari reveal to him that they’re from the Racta Moon, sent on a special mission. Nyssa, Billy, Jeremy, Buchanan and Macmillan stand by the Doctor whilst Ches reveals all.

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “So, Mr. Roid! You were sent by the High Council of Racta to investigate Henry MacDonald’s actions.”

CHES
“Yep! That’s right, Doctor! You see Racta had its concerns about Henry MacDonald for a long time! The first reports came in when this new planet arrived over sixty years ago! Of course, we took some time to talk to our new neighbours in order to be sure we weren’t mistaken in our suspicions.”

NYSSA
“How much time did you take, Mr. Roid?”

CHES
“Oh about fifty nine years!”

NYSSA
“You certainly don’t rush things.”

CARI
“My husband I’m sure will be more than happy to explain the rudiments of our very precise and detailed methodical approach.”

NYSSA
“I’m sure it’s all very fascinating, Mrs. Roid.”

CARI
“Oh please! Call me Cari!”

BILLY
“Mr. Roid, may I ask you a question?”

CHES
“Please do, young man!”

BILLY
“You said it took you fifty nine years to discover you weren’t mistaken in your suspicions.”

CHES
“Yes, what about it?”

BILLY
“Well if that’s so, what changed your mind one year later to discover what…these so-called suspicions were?”

DOCTOR
“It was the war games that were happening between the Scots from different times! Wasn’t it, Mr. Roid?!”

BUCHANAN
“Aye! And the fact that Henry MacDonald was behaving underhandedly hey, Mr. Roid?”

CHES
“Yes! I believe it was something like that. We were told by Henry MacDonald it was part of their Scottish heritage for Scots to re-enact glorious battles of their past like Culloden and Bannockburn. So the High Council needed to send someone to investigate the mysterious happenings on Scotland.”

JEREMY
“So, all that time you spent talking to my father with your petty and tedious talk about how wonderful Scotland was…you were actually spying on him.”

CHES
“Yes! Apologies for my deception, young Master MacDonald. But it had to be done! I was working on behalf of the High Council. They needed some people who could collect information without appearing too suspicious. So they sent me and my wife.”

CARI
“Yes that’s right! You see, I’m the daughter of a Scottish MacDonald and a Racta woman who got married twenty six years ago. I then met Ches on Racta and that’s how we got married and learnt of my heritage going way back to Scotland. That’s where the connection comes in between us two.”

CHES
“Yes, Cari. I’m sure they didn’t need to know about that bit of information.”

DOCTOR
“On the contrary, Mr. Roid! I think your wife’s ‘bit of information’ is very important!”

CHES
“Hey?”

NYSSA
(to Ches) “In order that they wouldn’t suspect you spying in their household Mr. Roid, they trusted the fact that your wife was a daughter of a MacDonald from Scotland.” (to Cari) “Blood tests were taken on you Mrs. Roid…I mean Cari…to ensure that you weren’t bogus.”

CARI
(to Nyssa) “You’re very smart, Nyssa!” (to Billy) “You’re lucky, Billy! To have a girlfriend as intelligent as Nyssa!”

BUCHANAN
“So they accepted you instantly! Henry MacDonald took the bait and you’ve been spying on him ever since!”

MACMILLAN
“And I thought we were the only ones to stop Henry MacDonald’s ambitions! Since we’re proper Scottish Nationalists!”

CHES
“Did you say ‘Scottish Nationalists’, gentlemen?”

JEREMY
“I’m learning something new everyday.”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Well…very interesting, I’m sure. But we’ve got more pressing matters to consider!”

MACMILLAN
“What pressing matters would they be, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“The battle of Chieftain’s Caves; the abduction of Scottish troops from different time zones; Henry MacDonald’s odd behaviour. They’re not of his work, but the work of Salvador! And his plans are going to become apoplectic if we don’t stop him!”

BUCHANAN
“Salvador? Who’s he?”

NYSSA
“A Time Lord legend according to the Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Yes, well never mind about that!” (to Ches) “Mr. Ches? I wonder if you would do me a favour. I know how loyal you are to the Racta council, but I think your help would be much appreciated!”

CHES
“Anything, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Good! I’d like you to get some help from your friends on the Racta council. I presume they’ll be here.”

CARI
“Ches sent a message to them to send trooper ships down to stop the fighting!” (to Ches) “Didn’t you, Ches dear?”

CHES
“Yes! Thank you, Cari! I was about to mention that!”

DOCTOR
“Splendid! Well, if you could ask them to gather up the Scots from different eras that would be much appreciated. If we send them back to their respective time zones, I’d like them all to be gathered rather than leave one behind.”

CHES
“I think my people would be more than happy to do that. I contacted them on my communicator a while ago and they reported being in the caves with Henry MacDonald. I’ll use my teleport unit for me and my wife to get to them.”

NYSSA
“Doctor? We don’t even know how we’re going to return the Scots back to their time zones with the use of the power chamber.”

BILLY
“Yeah. It’s going to be tricky getting our heads around that problem, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Well, don’t worry. We’ll think of something. When we get to the power chamber, that is.”

BUCHANAN
(to Doctor) “Doctor? My friend Macmillan and I were just talking. And we’d like to accompany Mr. Roid and his good lady wife in gathering up our fellow Scots from the past.”

DOCTOR
“I don’t see any objection to that!” (to Ches) “Do you, Mr. Roid?”

CHES
“Not at all, Doctor! I’d be happy for Mr. Buchanan and his friend Mr. Macmillan to join us!”

MACMILLAN
“Thank you, Mr. Roid.”

CHES
“Well, I suppose we’d better get started then!” (to Cari) “Come on, Cari! Are you ready?”

CARI
“Yes, Ches! Just remember to enter the right co-ordinates for that teleport unit you’ve got there!”

CHES
“Of course I will, dear! Come on then!” (to Macmillan; Buchanan) “With me, Mr. Macmillan; Mr. Buchanan!”

BUCHANAN
“Right behind you, Mr. Roid! Hey Alan?”

MACMILLAN
“Aye, James! That I am!”

CHES
“Right then! Hold on tight! Here we go!”

Eventually, Ches and Cari with Macmillan and Buchanan teleport out of sight as they head off to find the Racta aliens with Henry MacDonald and his clan in the Chieftain’s Caves. Meanwhile, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy get ready to re-enter the caves on foot.

BILLY
“And while they have their fun, what are we to do?”

DOCTOR
“Do? I thought that was obvious, Billy! We make for the power chamber!”

NYSSA
“Are you sure about doing this, Doctor? We don’t even know what we’ll do when we get there!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Exciting, isn’t it?! Let’s go!” (calls; to Jeremy) “Coming, Jeremy?”

The Doctor with Nyssa and Billy make their way into the caves via the cave exit created by Nyssa. Jeremy watches them go for a moment.

JEREMY
“Man, oh man! They’re bigger fools than I thought they were!”

Eventually, Jeremy follows after the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy into the caves.

SCENE #146 – INT – CENTRAL SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Deep inside the Chieftain’s Caves in its central section, Gussie and Lucy Mackintosh make their way through the dark corridors as they try to find their way. They don’t realise that they are close to the power chamber in the centre of the complex.

GUSSIE
(dissatisfied) “Aye! You know something, Lucy!”

LUCY
“What, Gussie?”

GUSSIE
“We’re lost!”

LUCY
“I could have told you that hours ago! But you were so adamant to ignore me!”

GUSSIE
“I’m sorry, my dear. I felt sure we were going the right way!”

LUCY
(frustrated) “I’m beginning to hate this place! Who’s idea was it to come in here anyway?!”

GUSSIE
“We’ve seen nobody for hours! Seems that they were wrong after all! This place doesn’t have any terrors in it!”

LUCY
“Oh no? What about that roar we heard earlier?”

GUSSIE
“Probably put on, I expect. To scare the living daylights out of anyone who walked in these caves!”

LUCY
“Seems a bit pointless then for MacDonald! To have these caves if there’s nobody to scare with!”

Just as Lucy says these words, they then hear screams of terror echoing nearby. Gussie and Lucy stagger back once they hear the screams.

GUSSIE
“Nobody to scare then hey, my dear? Seems as if fortune or fate disagrees with us!”

Gussie and Lucy hear the screams again as footsteps approach. Alistair and Ewan then appear.

LUCY
“Look! There are two men coming! They look like ghosts!”

GUSSIE
“Or rather seen ghosts!”

Alistair and Ewan make their way through the caves towards Gussie and Lucy. They are terrified out of their wits as they run.

LUCY
(realises) “Wait! It’s two of those men from our Jacobean army! They fought in the battle earlier!”

GUSSIE
“I believe you’re right, my dear! They are Jacobeans!”

LUCY
(calls; to Alistair; Ewan) “Hey! What are you men doing in here?! Why are you running….?”

ALISTAIR
(terrified) “Out of our way!”

Alistair and Ewan crash into Lucy as she falls over onto the ground. They push past Gussie and Lucy as Alistair and Ewan make their way to the other side of the dark cave tunnel.

GUSSIE
(shouts) “Oi! What do you hooligans think you’re doing! How dare you push past my wife like that?!”

Alistair and Ewan ignore Gussie as they keep on running to the other side of the dark cave tunnel. They’re about to turn around the corner at the other end.

EWAN
(shouts) “Run! Everybody, run for your lives!”

Puzzled and bewildered, Gussie kneels down to help his wife Lucy up from the ground. He pulls her slowly up to her feet.

GUSSIE
“Are you alright, my dear?!”

LUCY
(startled; reassuringly) “I think so. A little winded but I’ll be alright!”

GUSSIE
“Such shocking behaviour! I’ve never seen such madness!”

Gussie and Lucy, now both on their feet, look to see where Alistair and Ewan have gone to.

LUCY
(curious) “They must have been really frightened to be in such a terrible rush!”

Suddenly, a terrible roar echoes as Gussie and Lucy turn to see the ogress before them.

GUSSIE
(trembles; realises) “Aye! Now I understand why those two Jacobeans were so frightened!”

LUCY
(terrified; realises) “The ogress!”

Lucy and Gussie back away in terror as the ogress slowly approaches them. The ogress roars again, causing Lucy to scream.

GUSSIE
(shouts) “Stand behind me, Lucy dear! I’ll protect you!”

Lucy stands behind Gussie as he draws his sword to defend her against the ogress coming for them.

LUCY
(anxiously) “Be careful, Gussie!”

GUSSIE
(nervously) “Don’t worry, my dear! I can handle this! I can manage a ten-foot beastie like this one!”

The ogress roars in his face, causing Gussie to tremble.

GUSSIE
(afraid) “Just so long as it doesn’t eat us before I can hit it.”

Gussie gets his sword ready for an attack, whilst the ogress roars terribly at him.
