‘Chieftain’s Caves’, Part Four, Chapter 15

15. “Mind over Matter!”

SCENE #147 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, via a different path to the central section, the Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Jeremy enter the power chamber of the Chieftain’s Caves. As they enter, the Doctor quickly makes his way to search for something among the equipment in the centre of the chamber.

DOCTOR
“Here we are! Power chamber! And luckily no ogress to stop us! Now…where is that head-gear they usually keep for this sort of thing?”

NYSSA
“We don’t have much time to study the equipment, Doctor! This maybe Time Lord technology, but Salvador may well have added some modifications and alterations to the specific design.”

DOCTOR
“You maybe right, Nyssa. Salvador obviously has made a few alternations to its exterior design and may well delve into computing its memory store in modifying the chip and bubble memory to counteract interference and set off booby-traps!”

BILLY
“So what you’re saying is, Doctor…we may be here for hours trying to get past all those traps before we can actually shut the machine down?!”

DOCTOR
“In normal circumstances yes, Billy! It would take a long time for the traps to be disabled.”

JEREMY
“Well you’d better come up with a way to speed things up a bit, Doctor. This is all too much for me this technology. This is no place for a Scottish Highlander like me!”

DOCTOR
“I assure you Jeremy, I will sort this out!”

JEREMY
“Oh aye?! What are you going to do then? Gather up a flock of stags to bust the thing down…or charm it with your pretty words?! Though words have no use for situations like this now!”

NYSSA
“There’s no need to be pessimistic, Jeremy. The Doctor’s bound to have a plan already!”

BILLY
“Absolutely! Have faith, Jeremy!” (to Doctor) “Do you have a plan, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(triumphantly) “Aha! Here it is!”

The Doctor pulls down a headset from one of the computer compartments. He reconnects it to the machine. The Doctor fumbles with the headset in his hand before he discovers another one. Just then, a mainframe sparks into life.

DOCTOR
“Two headsets! Well, well! That’s handy to have.”

NYSSA
“What is it, Doctor? What are those headsets you’ve got in your hands?”

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa) “Mind-transfer processing units, Nyssa! MPUs for short, even though they look like ordinary headsets.” (to Billy) “And to answer your earlier question, Billy…yes I do have a plan! You and Nyssa inspired me!”

BILLY
“We did?”

NYSSA
“I’m glad to hear it! What was it we inspired you to do?”

DOCTOR
“I doubt you’d be pleased to hear it though.”

JEREMY
“Come on, Doctor! Tell us what it’s about!”

DOCTOR
“Very well.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Since you Nyssa and you Billy processed your thoughts into becoming reality, I thought why not do the same with mine? But on a colossal scale!”

NYSSA
(realises) “You’re going to transfer your mind into that machine! And send command instructions to the computer to shut down the booby traps and the equipment indefinitely!”

DOCTOR
“You read my mind, Nyssa.”

BILLY
“I say, isn’t that a bit dodgy? Not to say a big risk?”

NYSSA
“It is a big risk, Billy! Tremendous!” (to Doctor) “You can’t do it, Doctor! It’s impossible!”

DOCTOR
“Never say ‘impossible’, Nyssa! I can and I will! Salvador has gone on long enough! I’m going to connect my mind to the machine! It’s easy for Time Lords. They can protect themselves from harmful programs to disrupt the minds.”

NYSSA
“But Salvador may already be waiting to trick you out! You can’t expect to go in there and fight off those safeguards with casual ease!”

JEREMY
(bewildered; to Billy) “What are they blethering on about, Billy lad?”

BILLY
“Believe me, Jeremy! I don’t know!”

DOCTOR
“I’m sorry, Nyssa! But I have to do this! It’s the only way I know! And besides, I know how this technology is supposed to work.”

Moment of silence as the Doctor puts on one headset onto his head. Nyssa then steps forward.

NYSSA
“You’re not going to do it, Doctor! Not by yourself!”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “What do you mean?”

NYSSA
“I’m going to help you, Doctor!”

BILLY
“What?! Nyssa, what are you talking about?”

DOCTOR
“Nyssa, don’t!”

NYSSA
“I’m volunteering myself to help you! There’s that other headset beside you! We can both connect to the machine and use our mental abilities to shut it down.”

DOCTOR
(abjectly) “Nyssa, this machine works well on Time Lord minds! It won’t work on Trakenites!”

NYSSA
“You don’t know that! I have psychic abilities of my own, you know that! I can boost your perception through the mind sphere of that technology in order to help you through those safeguards.”

BILLY
(protests) “Nyssa, you’re not serious about connecting to that machine!”

NYSSA
“Billy, please! I know what I’m doing!”

DOCTOR
“You most certainly do not, Nyssa! This technology is too advanced for you! It’ll break down the barriers of your mind too easily! Meaning no disrespect, but your mind is fragile compared with mine!”

NYSSA
“My mind’s made up, Doctor! I’m going to help you!”

DOCTOR
(sighs; gradually) “Very well. It’s your decision.”

BILLY
(shouts) “No! Doctor, don’t let her do this!”

NYSSA
“Please, Billy! I’ve got to help the Doctor! He won’t be able to stop Salvador if he does this on his own! I’ll be able to support him in this way!”

BILLY
“But you’ll be killed, Nyssa! The Doctor said…”

NYSSA
“I’m adamant!”

BILLY
“Please! I love you!”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
(empathically) “I love you too!”

Nyssa kisses Billy.

BILLY
“I may not see you again, Nyssa. If you help the Doctor, I…”

NYSSA
(gently) “Ssh! I will see you again, Billy! You can count on that! Alright?”

BILLY
(gradually) “Yeah.” (Pause) “I’ll hold you to your word, if you agree to come with me to see a movie premiere from the nineteen thirties or forties. I don’t know what film yet, but I’ll think of something.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “I really would like that!”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR
“Are you ready, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(to Billy) “I have to help the Doctor now, Billy. Will you wait for me?”

BILLY
“I’ll be around if you need me.”

NYSSA
“Yes! I’d like that!” (Pause; to Doctor) “Yes, Doctor! I’m ready!”

DOCTOR
(wearingly) “Are you sure you want to do this, Nyssa? You can always back out…”

NYSSA
“No backing out this time, Doctor! I’m sure about this!”

DOCTOR
“Very well.” (Pause) “Take this headset and put it on!”

The Doctor hands the headset to Nyssa, to which she takes and puts it onto her head. The Doctor does the same with his headset by putting it on. Just then, a ferocious roar echoes nearby.

NYSSA
(terrified) “What’s that?!”

JEREMY
(realises) “It’s the ogress! Iona! She’s outside!”

Just then, a female scream from Lucy Mackintosh echoes nearby.

BILLY
(puzzled) “I’ve never heard an ogress do that kind of scream before!”

JEREMY
(realises) “There’s somebody else out there! A woman!”

Another scream echoes from Gussie Mackintosh nearby.

BILLY
“And a man!”

Jeremy draws his sword from his sheath.

JEREMY
(determined) “We have to go out and help them! We have to save them before Iona goes too far!” (to Billy) “You coming, Billy lad?”

BILLY
(hesitates) “I…I…” (to Nyssa) “Nyssa, I…?”

NYSSA
“You go on, Billy! Help Jeremy!”

BILLY
(disgruntled) “Right.” (Pause) “I’ll come back for you!”

NYSSA
“Yes Billy, I know.”

BILLY
(to Doctor) “Please look after Nyssa, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Don’t worry, Billy! I’ll see to that! After all, she’ll be looking after me!”

JEREMY
(to Billy) “Come on, laddie! Let’s get moving!”

Jeremy heads off out of the power chamber whilst Billy follows on behind.

BILLY
(to Doctor; Nyssa) “See you guys later!”

Once Jeremy and Billy have gone, the Doctor and Nyssa, with their headsets, begin with connecting to the machine.

DOCTOR
“Now, Nyssa! Once we’ve established a telepathic link with each other, we should be able to move our way through the computer junctions of the machine.”

NYSSA
“Yes! Let’s hope I’ll be able to concentrate long enough to be able to do that.”

DOCTOR
“This was your decision, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Yes! I know, Doctor.”

The Doctor and Nyssa wait for a while as they get ready to use their mental abilities to shut the machine down.

SCENE #148 – INT – CENTRAL SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Back with Gussie and Lucy, in the central section of the Chieftain’s Caves, the ogress continues to terrify the living daylights out of them. Gussie and Lucy back away against the wall from the ogress.

LUCY
(terrified) “Gussie! Gussie, my dear! Please do something!”

GUSSIE
“I did do something! And look what it did! It ate half the blade off my sword! A wonder it managed to do that!”

LUCY
(prays) “Oh please, God! Save us both!”

Whilst the ogress roars away furiously, Jeremy and Billy then enter.

JEREMY
“There she is!” (surprised) “Why?! Mr. and Mrs. Mackintosh!”

LUCY
“You! Jeremy MacDonald!” (angrily) “What have you done with our daughter?!”

GUSSIE
“Really, Lucy! This really isn’t the time!”

LUCY
“We may never get the chance to ask before that creature eats us up, Gussie!” (shouts; to Jeremy) “What have you done with Iona?!”

GUSSIE
(astonished) “Why?! If it isn’t that boy with him! Billy, wasn’t it?”

BILLY
“Jeremy! The Mackintoshes! They don’t realise that the ogress is…”

JEREMY
(shouts; to Gussie) “Mr. Mackintosh! Whatever you do, don’t attack the ogress with that sword of yours!”

LUCY
“What?!”

GUSSIE
“Are you insane?! That creature is coming…”

JEREMY
“That creature, as you call her, happens to be Iona!”

GUSSIE
“What are you saying?!”

JEREMY
“Your daughter…I’m afraid…has turned into that thing!”

GUSSIE
(disbelievingly) “No! That can’t be true!”

LUCY
(to Jeremy) “You’re lying!” (to Gussie) “He’s lying, Gussie! Don’t listen to him!”

BILLY
“It’s true, Mrs. Mackintosh! Others have seen it too! Including my girlfriend Nyssa!”

LUCY
(to Gussie) “Gussie, my dear! Kill it! Strike it with your sword again!”

GUSSIE
“But it’s been chomped in half by that thing!”

LUCY
“Well strike it with the other half then! Just do it, Gussie!”

JEREMY
“No, Mr. Mackintosh! If you hurt her, you’ll hurt Iona!”

LUCY
“Do it, Gussie! Do it!”

Gussie gets up onto his feet as he begins to strike at the ogress with his half-eaten sword.

BILLY
“Mr. Mackintosh, no!”

Gussie lets out a cry as he slashes his half-eaten sword upon the ogress. The ogress then lets out a sharp, hideous groan before she crumbles to the ground.

LUCY
“You did it, Gussie! You did it! Well done!”

GUSSIE
“Aye, I did it! I struck the beast in the arm! She’s weakened now!”

JEREMY
(angrily) “How dare you strike her, Mr. MacDonald?! That was Iona, my fiancée! Your own daughter!”

LUCY
(accusingly) “You’re sick, young Jeremy MacDonald! Completely and utterly sick! Now you tell us the truth! What have you done with our daughter?!”

JEREMY
“I told you before! She’s there right before you!”

LUCY
“Have you no sense of compassion, you villain!”

BILLY
“No, wait! All of you, look!”

LUCY
“And just who do you think you are, Mr. Billy Walker…?!”

BILLY
(interjects) “Just look at the ogress, please! She’s changing!”

LUCY
“I have nothing to do with the ogress! She’s dead as far as I’m concerned…”

GUSSIE
(interrupts; insistently) “Lucy, my dear! Look!”

LUCY
“Not now, Gussie! I’m trying to find out from the MacDonald boy where our daughter is…”

GUSSIE
(interrupts; shouts) “Lucy! Just look!”

LUCY
“Why are you shouting at me?! I…?” (stops; realises; shocked) “Oh my! Oh good God!”

Everyone looks to see the ogress changing into the small, fragile form of Iona Mackintosh. Iona clutches her arm as she slowly gets up from the ground. She finds herself exhausted and terribly shattered.

BILLY
“There you are, Mr. and Mrs. Mackintosh! There’s your daughter, Iona! Jeremy was telling you the truth all the time!”

They look to see Iona sobbing away as she’s completely wretched and upset from her traumatic ordeal.

IONA
(sobs) “So horrible! I couldn’t think straight! My mind was numb against the rage and mindless fury!” (groans; in pain) “My arm hurts! My arm hurts so much!”

LUCY
“Iona, my dear! What have you been doing…?”

IONA
(shrieks; to Lucy) “Keep away from me, you! Don’t come close to me!” (Pause) “You wanted me dead! You wanted to kill me when I could have been saved!”

GUSSIE
“Iona! My sweet little girl, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to…”

IONA
(shrieks; to Gussie) “You too! Keep away from me! You hurt me! You both hurt me!”

Moment of tense silence.

LUCY
“I don’t understand! She’s shut us out! We didn’t mean to…”

GUSSIE
“Oh but we did Lucy, remember? We meant to kill her when she was that…that thing!”

LUCY
“But how were we supposed to know, Gussie dear?”

BILLY
(gently) “I think it might be best if we left her alone for a bit. She’s suffered a great deal.”

They watch Iona sobbing her heart out on the ground.

IONA
(sobs; calls) “Jeremy?! Jeremy, where are you? I need you, Jeremy!”

JEREMY
“I’m right here, Iona!”

Jeremy makes his way over to Iona as he kneels down on the ground beside her. He begins to comfort her.

IONA
(sobs) “I couldn’t help it! I’m so sorry, Jeremy! I just couldn’t help myself! I didn’t mean to hurt anyone! It was…”

JEREMY
(reassuringly) “Try not to talk about it now, Iona. Don’t worry! You’re safe now! Safe with me!”

Iona then hides her head in Jeremy as they both embrace each other. Jeremy cradles Iona in his arms whilst she sobs.

LUCY
“Fancy that! Iona gets the MacDonald boy when we are rebuked by her!”

GUSSIE
“Perhaps I was wrong about the boy! Perhaps he does have a sense of heart and honour about him after all!”

Lucy, Gussie and Billy remain still as they stand about in the caves with Jeremy cradling Iona in his arms.

SCENE #149 – INT – EAST SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, in the east section of the Chieftain’s Caves, Henry, Maggie, Hugo and the MacDonald gathering remain seated as they’re kept prisoner by the Ractas.

MAGGIE
(observantly) “They’re not keeping a very good eye on us, are they? They don’t have many guards to watch us!”

HUGO
“They presume too much, I expect. They think they’re so strong and vibrant that we won’t try to escape!”

HENRY
“Remember what I said now, fellow MacDonalds! When I give the word, we make a run for it!”

Moment of silence, as they all wait for the right moment.

MAGGIE
(quietly) “Henry! That guard’s looking the other way!”

They watch as the particular guard does just that.

HENRY
(shouts) “Everyone! Back out the other way! Now!”

Henry, Hugo and Maggie with the MacDonald gathering do as they’re instructed, as they stand up and head for the rear exit to escape.

HUGO
(shouts) “Everyone! Through that tunnel!”

But before they get to the tunnel, Henry, Hugo and Maggie with the MacDonalds bump into something electric before them. A force-field blocks their path. Startled and surprised, Henry, Hugo and Maggie with the MacDonalds are brought up to their feet by their Racta guards.

HUGO
(groans) “Should have seen that one coming!”

HENRY
“What in great MacDonald’s name was that?! We didn’t crash through a wall, did we?!”

Lord Budt and Mr. Bucc then enter.

LORD BUDT
“A force-field, Mr. MacDonald. Just because we have few guards to watch you all, don’t think you can try and escape!”

HENRY
“You’re mocking us! All of you! You ugly looking aliens mocking the great MacDonalds and Scots of Scotland! Especially ‘the MacDonalds’!”

MR. BUCC
“This isn’t your playground, MacDonald! This isn’t Culloden, Bannockburn or Stirling Bridge! This is real warfare! You are all prisoners of war!”

MAGGIE
“Please! My husband will do anything you want, unless you…”

HENRY
(interrupts) “No, Maggie! I will not sign any confounded letters of theirs regarding Scottish politics!”

MAGGIE
(anxiously) “Henry, my dear! This has gone on long enough! Ought we to change our ways…?”

HENRY
“Salvador commanded me to find Ches of Roid as well as his other friends to stop their business in destroying the power chamber! I intend to do that! But I will not have these aliens let us go by signing some letter, asking us to tone down our Scottish ways! I won’t have it!”

HUGO
“Ches of Roid as well as his friends may already have done their dirty work, the way you keep on behaving, Henry!”

Before Henry can retort, there is a commotion between the Ractas.

MAGGIE
“Why, Henry?! I believe some newcomers are coming!”

This is confirmed as Ches, Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan enter the camp of the Ractas.

CHES
(calls) “Where is Lord Budt of Racta? I demand to speak to Lord Budt of Racta! I am Ches of Roid seeking that person!”

LORD BUDT
(cheerfully) “And you have found him, sir! Welcome to our camp, Roid!”

Everyone watches as Ches of Roid and Lord Budt greet each other.

HUGO
(realises) “It’s that whippersnapper Roid, Henry! He’s come before we even found him!”

HENRY
(bitterly) “Yes! Confound the man! Traitor!”

MAGGIE
(quietly) “Quiet, you two! Let’s watch!”

Henry, Hugo and Maggie watch as they see Ches chatting with Lord Budt. Lord Budt introduces Ches to Mr. Pew and Mr. Bucc.

LORD BUDT
(introduces) “My secretary Mr. Pew and our Racta councillor Mr. Bucc!”

CHES
(cheerfully) “How do you do!” (Pause; introduces) “You know my wife Cari, of course!”

CARI
(cheerfully) “Good to see you again, Lord Budt!”

CHES
(continues; introduces) “And this is Mr. Macmillan and Mr. Buchanan! They’re on our side! They’re members of the Brotherhood of Scottish Nationalism!”

With Henry, Hugo and Maggie watching…

MAGGIE
(quietly) “What? The Roids working with Scottish Nationalists!”

HENRY
(bitterly) “I knew it! Confound the man! Traitor!”

MAGGIE
(quietly) “You said that already, dear! And keep quiet!”

With that, they continue watching and keep quiet.

CHES
“We have a report to give, my Lord Budt!”

MR. BUDT
“Very well! Give your report, Mr. Roid!”

CHES
“We’ve been in contact with a wise man named the Doctor. He’s in these caves at this very moment!”

MACMILLAN
(interjects) “He’s asked Mr. Roid here for us to round up the Scots from various time zones that have been fighting on this God-forsaken rock that’s called Scotland!”

BUCHANAN
“So he’s asked Mr. Roid here to get as many of your troops to do this, so that we may put an end to this Scottish turmoil!”

CHES
(abjectly) “I was about to tell them that, gentlemen!”

LORD BUDT
“Thank you, Mr. Buchanan; Mr. Macmillan for your explanations and advice!”

MR. BUCC
(to Ches) “This man you encountered, Roid? What is his purpose here? Why does he tell us to do these things when we know little about him?”

CARI
(interjects) “Because the Doctor knows who’s responsible for this mess with Scotland and he’s intent on stopping him! The man responsible…is called Salvador!”

CHES
“Thank you, Cari my dear! There’s no need to speak on my behalf! I can explain things!” (to Lord Budt) “So…you see gentlemen…”

MR. BUCC
(interrupts; uncertain) “We have very few Ractas on this planet left to spare, when they’re patrolling the planet’s surface! And since Roid claims that the Doctor knows who’s responsible for the state that Scotland’s in…”

LORD BUDT
(interjects) “Yes I take your point, Mr. Bucc!” (to Ches) “When does this Doctor expect us to gather the Scots who have been victims of this warmongering?”

CARI
“Immediately! He expects you to do it immediately!”

CHES
“And I’m expected to organise the gathering myself!”

CARI
“Along with me!”

MACMILLAN
“And me!”

BUCHANAN
“And me!”

Moment of silence.

LORD BUDT
“Mr. Pew?”

PEW
“Yes, my Lord Budt?”

LORD BUDT
“Take down this message and send it out to all patrols of Ractas on Scotland!”

MR. PEW
“Yes, my Lord Budt! I’m ready to take the message now!”

With that, Pew takes down Lord Budt’s message.

SCENE #150 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile with the Doctor and Nyssa, they are still inside the power chamber of the Chieftain’s Caves. They struggle to make the connection whilst connected to the machine central to the caves.

NYSSA
(wearily) “Doctor. I feel so tired.”

DOCTOR
“Mind over matter, Nyssa. Keep it up! We’re bound to make the connection eventually!”

NYSSA
(wearily) “I feel so numb. Can’t concentrate.”

DOCTOR
“You should have backed out when you could, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
(gradually; determined) “No! You’re right, Doctor! I must keep it together! I can’t give up now!”

The Doctor and Nyssa keep on trying for a little while longer. Eventually…

NYSSA
(realises) “Doctor! I’m sensing something! I think we’ve gained access!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! I’m feeling the sensations too! Feeling computations flooding into our minds?”

NYSSA
“I can make out numbers and algorithms in my head!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! I believe we’re through!”

SCENE #151 – INT – CENTRAL SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile in the central section of the Chieftain’s Caves, Billy watches as Jeremy tries to reassure Iona. Gussie and Lucy also watch on, bemused.

IONA
“I’m frightened! I’m really frightened, Jeremy!”

JEREMY
“I know you’re frightened, lass! But we must go back into the central power chamber and find the Doctor and Nyssa! The Doctor will help you and make you normal again!”

IONA
“Are you sure?”

JEREMY
“Billy here is a friend of the Doctor’s! He should know! Why not ask him?”

IONA
(to Billy) “Is it true? Can your friend help me get back to normal?”

BILLY
(gradually) “I don’t know the answer to that really, Iona. But the Doctor would try!”

JEREMY
(to Iona) “We have to trust Billy’s word on that! The Doctor would try to help, I’m sure of it! He’s been helping me a lot since we last met, Iona! Trust me!”

Moment of silence.

IONA
(suspiciously) “What about them? My parents? Can I trust them again?”

JEREMY
“They weren’t to know you were a monster, Iona. And if it comes to it, neither did I. Remember? You tried to attack me and Nyssa.”

Another moment of silence.

IONA
(sobs) “I feel so frightened already! I feel…so weak and tired!”

Iona sobs more whilst Jeremy cradles her in his arms. Lucy then steps forward to Iona.

LUCY
(gently) “Iona?” (Pause) “Iona, my dear? Listen to me, please!”

IONA
(gradually) “Yes, Mother?”

LUCY
(gently) “Your father and I love you! And we’d do anything to save your life! But you must trust us as well as Mr. Billy and your fiancée Jeremy here! They may help, but so can we!”

GUSSIE
“That’s right, Iona my dear. Please let us help you to get better again!”

Another moment of silence.

JEREMY
“Iona! I promise you, we will sort it out! Please don’t be frightened!”

It takes a while before Iona acknowledges her faith in Jeremy as well as her parents and Billy.

JEREMY
(encouragingly) “That’s it! Well done, Iona my dear!”

BILLY
(gradually) “We have to make our way back to the power chamber! The Doctor and Nyssa will still be there, connected to some sort of computer! They may well still be doing it when we get there!”

GUSSIE
“Do you know the way back to the power chamber then, young man?”

BILLY
“It isn’t very far! Come on! This way!”

Billy leads the way as he, Gussie and Lucy with Jeremy and Iona head back to the power chamber in the caves.

SCENE #152 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Back in the power chamber of the Chieftain’s Caves with the Doctor and Nyssa, they are now inside the mind processing unit (MPU) of the mainframe. Their minds speak out aloud telepathically whilst they’re in the MPU.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Nyssa? Can you hear me? I’m using my own thought patterns to communicate across the boundary layer.”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Nyssa! You must concentrate on getting your mind across the boundary layer. I know it’s hard, but concentrate! You can do it!”

NYSSA (V’O)
(gradually) “Yes! I can hear your thoughts! I’ve done it, Doctor! I’m through to the access point!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
(pleased) “Well done, Nyssa! How do you feel?”

NYSSA (V’O)
“A little weary, but I’ll manage. It was a struggle nevertheless.”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Oh, I’m afraid that’s the easy part over with! We now have to avoid setting off those booby-traps!”

NYSSA (V’O)
“Yes of course. Where do we start?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Hmm? Uh…just give me a few moments to think!”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Ah, yes! Now…if we focus in our minds to what we want to see, we should have a clear idea where it is and how to get there?”

NYSSA (V’O)
“And what is it we’re supposed to be focusing our minds on, Doctor?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“The central nucleus of the energy node. Now…think of that in your mind and it’ll be appear before you! Just like when you want a round of ham sandwiches, I’m sure they’ll appear to you.”

NYSSA (V’O)
“Ham sandwiches?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Err…don’t think of that? I just said it as an example.”

NYSSA (V’O)
“The booby traps. What about…?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Don’t worry about that yet, Nyssa. Focus on the task at hand! Find the nucleus of the energy node first!”

It takes a while for the Doctor and Nyssa to conjure up the thought in their minds. It is still a struggle whilst their minds are connected to the machine.

NYSSA (V’O)
(struggles) “It’s still hard for me to concentrate, Doctor! The interaction forces are too strong for my mind to cope with! It’s too much pressure!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
(encouragingly) “Keep at it, Nyssa! We’re nearly there! I can spot an image in my mind!”

NYSSA (V’O)
(struggles) “It’s so hard, Doctor!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Link minds with me then! Then you’ll be able to see!”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR (V’O)
(gradually) “Can you sense my mind yet, Nyssa?”

NYSSA (V’O)
(struggles) “Just about.” (Pause) “Making the connection…now!”

Eventually, the Doctor and Nyssa link minds with each other. They see the image of the nucleus before them.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“There we are, Nyssa! There’s the nucleus! The nucleus of the central energy node!”

NYSSA (V’O)
(puzzled) “There’s no sign of any safeguards or booby-traps!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“We’ll worry about shutting down the nucleus later. Once we’ve sorted out all the traps set in this place, the easier the job will come.”

NYSSA (V’O)
“My mind’s fully clear! Must have been boosted when I connected minds with yours, Doctor!” (Pause; realises) “Doctor, there aren’t any booby traps or safeguards in this area!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Nonsense, Nyssa! Of course there are bound to be safeguards or booby traps! Salvador would be unwise not to set them, if he knew intruders would come in here!”

NYSSA (V’O)
“Doctor, there aren’t any booby traps! I know there aren’t! We’re fully connected to the computer core! Can’t you sense it?”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“You’re right, Nyssa! You’re definitely right!” (Pause) “There aren’t any booby traps or safeguards that we know of to counteract our intrusion! No viruses; trojans or maintenance agents to lock our minds out! Nor any that we were expecting! It seems as if our caution was unnecessary!”

NYSSA (V’O)
“The nucleus is there for the taking! We can easily shut it down whenever we want to from where we are!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“It’s too easy, Nyssa! Far too easy for us to deal with! The Time Lords wouldn’t be so clever to leave out safeguards if any thieves were to come along.” (Pause) “Unless…”

NYSSA (V’O)
“Unless what?” (Pause) “Doctor?”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR (V’O)
(realises; urgently) “Quickly, Nyssa! Disconnect from the machine!”

NYSSA (V’O)
(surprised) “What? But Doctor…?!”

DOCTOR (V’O)
(urgently) “Just do as I say! Now!”

SCENE #153 – INT – CENTRAL SECTION, CHEIFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile with Billy, Jeremy, Iona, Gussie and Lucy, they make their way back to the power chamber in the central section of the Chieftain’s Caves.

BILLY
(reassuringly) “We’re nearly there now, everyone! The power chamber’s close by around the corner!”

Just then, the five come to a stop. They are unable to move.

LUCY
(panics) “Gussie! Gussie, my dear! I can’t move my feet!”

GUSSIE
“Neither can I! My feet are stuck to the ground!”

IONA
(panics) “Jeremy?! What’s happening?! I’m not turning into that ogress thing again, am I?”

JEREMY
“I don’t know!” (Pause) “Billy lad, what’s happening to us?!”

BILLY
“How should I know? If the Doctor were here…”

Billy stops midway through talking as he receives a tingling sensation inside of him. The others feel it too.

JEREMY
“Billy! I feel a sort of…”

BILLY
“Tingling? Yes! I feel it too! It seems like…” (realises) “Hang on! I remember something like this before!” (Pause) “It was when…”

IONA
(apprehensively) “What? What is it?”

BILLY
(thinks; realises) “I remember now! It was on the Moonraker when it happened!”

GUSSIE
“Moonraker? What are you blethering on about?”

BILLY
“It happened to me and the Doctor! I remember it being something called a…teleport!”

Within moments, Billy, Jeremy, Iona, Gussie and Lucy cry out astonished and panicked as they’re suddenly teleported out of the caves.

SCENE #154 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Back in the power chamber of Chieftain’s Caves, the Doctor and Nyssa wake up as they’ve mentally come out from the computer mainframe. They immediately take off their headsets.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Doctor, will you please explain to me what’s the matter?! Why did we have to disconnect from the machine so abruptly?”

DOCTOR
“We’ve been duped, Nyssa! We’ve been very foolish indeed!” (calls aloud) “Salvador?! Salvador, where are you?! Come out wherever you are! I know you’re here!”

Moment of silence, before Salvador appears with a plate of ham sandwiches in his hand.

SALVADOR
(mockingly) “Fancy some ham sandwiches now, Doctor? I’ve taken the liberty of having some for myself!”

The Doctor and Nyssa see Salvador as he munches away on his ham sandwiches from the plate, amused and mocking at them.

NYSSA
“He’s been in here ever since we’ve been inside that machine! Waiting to trap us!”

SALVADOR
(menacingly) “You caused all of this to happen to me, Doctor! You are responsible for my condition! I blame you for everything! And now, within my domain, I can extinguish you and your friend’s life with the power of one word forever!”

The Doctor and Nyssa are quite disturbed by Salvador’s presence in the power chamber as they anticipate his next move.

SCENE #155 – EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
With Billy, Jeremy, Iona,  Gussie and Lucy, they end up at the entrance to the Chieftain’s Caves. There are some other people there with them.

BILLY
(surprised) “It’s dark out here!” (Pause; to Gussie; Lucy) “Mr. and Mrs. Mackintosh? Are you both alright?!”

GUSSIE
“I think so, lad. I feel a bit groggy!” (to Lucy) “How about you, my dear?”

LUCY
“I feel so dizzy!”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “I think you’ll be alright, Mrs. Mackintosh!” (to Jeremy; Iona) “Jeremy; Iona?”

JEREMY
“I’m alright thanks, Billy.” (to Iona) “Iona?”

IONA
(gradually) “Jeremy! Do you see? Everyone we know is here! The MacDonalds; the Mackintoshes! Everybody we know from our own community is here!”

JEREMY
(realises) “Aye! I see it too myself! And look! All the Scottish soldiers are here as well! Both Jacobean and from Wallace’s era!”

BILLY
“I imagine they must be rather perplexed as to being here as much as we are!”

Billy, Jeremy, Iona, Gussie and Lucy watch as they see Alistair and Ewan with Hamish and Duncan regaining focus with their fellow comrades. They recover from their giddiness.

HAMISH
“Duncan, lad? Are ye alright?”

DUNCAN
“Fine! I’m fine, Hamish! But I have no idea as to where we are!”

EWAN
(cries) “Look, Alistair! Look! Our enemies, the English, are right before us!”

ALISTAIR
(vengefully) “Aye! Two-fisted bounders! The Redcoats won’t get us like last time!”

Alistair is about to charge forward with a battle cry, before he’s immediately stopped by Macmillan and Buchanan stepping in his way.

MACMILLAN
“Hold it there, fine Scotsman! Hold it there! They’re not the ones you’re meant to be fighting!”

ALISTAIR
(puzzled) “What are ye talking about…?”

BUCHANAN
“They’re fellow Scots like yourselves, lads! But they’re from your distant past! From the time of William Wallace!”

BILLY
(realises; calls) “Cari! Mr. Macmillan; Mr. Buchanan! Over here!”

CARI
(thrilled) “Why, Ches! Look over there! It’s Billy!”

CHES
“That boy you’ve been with, dear?” (realises) “Oh yes! I can see him now!”

Cari makes her way over to greet Billy. Ches, Macmillan and Buchanan join her.

CARI
(relieved) “Billy! I’m so glad you’re alright! I’m very pleased to see you!”

BILLY
(to Cari) “I’m pleased to see you too, Cari!” (to Buchanan; Macmillan) “And you too, Mr. Buchanan; Mr. Macmillan!”

MACMILLAN
“Where are you friends? The Doctor and Miss Nyssa?”

BILLY
(anxiously) “I wish I knew, Mr. Macmillan! The last time I saw them I was…”

BUCHANAN
(interrupts) “Why look! Look over there!”

CHES
“What is it, Mr. Buchanan…?” (realises) “Oh I see! Yes, it’s Henry MacDonald!”

They look to see Henry MacDonald, his wife Maggie, Hugo Kilwhille and the MacDonald gathering as they’re being roughly escorted out of the caves by their Racta captors. They’re led by Lord Budt and Mr. Bucc with Mr. Pew.

HENRY
(angrily) “Take your hands off me, you ragamuffins! This is a fine Harris Tweed you’re clutching your filthy fingernails on!”

MAGGIE
“At least we’re out in the open, dear. And away from those caves!”

HUGO
“I’m not sure if being out here under the watchful eye of our captors makes any difference, Maggie!”

PEW
(sharply) “Silence! No talking and keep walking!”

The captives escorted by the Ractas make their way forward until they meet up with Billy, Cari, Ches, Macmillan, Buchanan, Jeremy, Iona, Gussie and Lucy.

MR. BUCC
(realises) “Ah! There you are, Ches! And I see all your Scottish soldiers are gathered here!”

CHES
“Yes, Mr. Bucc! It wasn’t easy, but I managed it in the end!”

LORD BUDT
“Well done indeed, Ches of Roid!”

HENRY
(vengefully; to Gussie) “You! You, Mackintosh! You caused all of this to happen! You caused all of this for me to lose everything! You brought us here outside my caves to gloat at me!”

LUCY
(admonishingly) “How dare you, MacDonald?! That’s my husband you’re talking to!”

HENRY
(to Lucy) “And I’m determined to sort him out, my dear!” (to Gussie) “I challenge you, sir! To a duel for my rightful claim to Scotland!”

SCENE #156 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Back in the Power Chamber, the Doctor confronts Salvador.

DOCTOR
“You’re wrong, Salvador! You can’t extinguish my life so easily!”

SALVADOR
“Oh but I can, Doctor! You know I can!”

DOCTOR
“Not necessarily! I know your mind so well and know all about you that you can’t even shut off my two hearts just as much as I can’t shut down your machine. If you shut me down, you shut yourself down!”

NYSSA
(astonished) “Doctor! You’re not seriously saying Salvador’s a part of your biology?”

DOCTOR
“I gave him part of my DNA, Nyssa! It was part of the renovation of a Time Lord life!”

SALVADOR
“A life…which I shall terminate dearly! I have waited a long time for this moment! If I kill you and I die as well, then so be it!”

DOCTOR
(challengingly) “Oh but why do it so easily, Salvador?! Why do it so instantly when you know it won’t be so tortuous for me as for you?! It’s too childish, isn’t it?! Too silly!”

Moment of silence.

SALVADOR
“What do you suggest then, Doctor?”

SCENE #157 – EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – DAY, EVENING
Back outside at the cave entrance…

JEREMY
(to Henry) “Father, don’t talk rubbish!”

BILLY
(to Henry) “I really wouldn’t do anything rash, Mr. MacDonald!”

MAGGIE
(to Henry) “They’re right, Henry! Don’t do this!”

HENRY
(to Gussie) “I mean it! I challenge you, sir! Do you accept?!”

IONA
(to Gussie) “Dad, don’t do it!”

GUSSIE
(calmly) “It’s alright! I know my own mind! If Mr. MacDonald can’t settle matters diplomatically, then I’m happy to do it the hard way!”

DOCTOR
(calls) “That won’t be necessary, Mr. Mackintosh! Another challenge has been arranged on everyone’s behalf!”

Everyone turns to see the Doctor, Nyssa and Salvador appear as they make their way towards them.

CARI
“I see torchlight!”

BILLY
(realises; thrilled) “Doctor; Nyssa! You’re both alright! You’re both here!”

NYSSA
(pleased) “Billy! I’m so glad to see you!”

Nyssa and Billy make their way towards each other. They embrace in a warm hug, happy to see each other again.

BILLY
“What happened though? Did it work? Did you manage to shut down the machine?!”

NYSSA
“We were tricked, Billy! Salvador came in just as we were about to shut it off!”

HENRY
(realises) “Ah, Salvador! So there you are! I knew our tiny little world was being invaded by aliens! But isn’t this just a bit over-the-top?!”

The crowd of people gathered outside the caves’ entrance starts to mutter and bicker among themselves. The Doctor tries to gain his attention.

DOCTOR
(calls) “If you would please settle down, all of you! Mr. Salvador and I have an announcement!”

However, nobody listens. They still keep on talking.

DOCTOR
(calls louder) “Excuse me! Can I have your attention, please?!”

Still nobody listens as they keep on talking.

SALVADOR
(roars) “QUIET!!!”

Everyone trembles into silence once they hear Salvador’s voice.

DOCTOR
(quietly) “Well, Salvador! I do marvel! You certainly have a way of getting everyone’s attention!”

Moment of silence, before Salvador begins to speak.

SALVADOR
“The war of Scotland has cost many lives! This man you see before you…the Doctor…has demanded for it to end!” (Pause) “And I have agreed!”

Some people are shocked as they mutter and gasps with each other.

SALVADOR
“So…to end all conflicts in Scottish lands…the Doctor and I will fight to the end…out here at the entrance to the Chieftain’s Caves!” (to Doctor) “Doctor? Do you accept to fight me…to end the battle for the Chieftain’s Caves?”

DOCTOR
(shrewdly) “You know I do already, Salvador! So let’s get this over with!”

SALVADOR
(triumphantly) “Then it’s settled! The duel will take place!”

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Doctor, you surely don’t mean to…”

HENRY
(protests) “No! I utterly protest against this underhanded manner! It’s my caves we’ve been fighting for! I should fight the Doctor…”

SALVADOR
(interrupts; spitefully) “You’re wrong, MacDonald! The caves are my property! I am the chieftain of Scotland! Those are my Chieftain’s Caves! I am Salvador…ruler of Scotland!”

HENRY
(protests) “That is a matter of opinion, you backstabbing traitor!”

SALVADOR
(bitterly) “You dare to challenge me, weak mortal?!” (Pause) “Since you failed in your mission to obey my commands, you shall see your wife die terribly!”

Maggie then lets out a cry of pain as she slowly starts to fade away before Henry’s eyes.

HENRY
(cries) “Maggie! No!”

DOCTOR
(shouts) “No, Salvador! We agreed in the caves! Nobody was to be hurt except us! No more blood will be spilled!”

SALVADOR
(menacingly) “Ah but you don’t know do you, Doctor?! Maggie MacDonald is not a real person! I can erase her easily!”

Maggie screams.

HENRY
(cries) “No Maggie, no!”

DOCTOR
(seriously) “If you kill her and break our agreement Salvador, I will not fight you! And you won’t get what you want if you don’t fight me! I mean it, Salvador! She’s more a human life than you realise! Henry knows it and I’m sure many other people believe that as well!”

SALVADOR
(rebukes) “You’re so dull, Doctor! If you weren’t so charming in your ways, I’d expose you for what you are by…” (trails off; sighs) “I tire at this debate! Let’s get this over with!”

DOCTOR
“I quite agree!”

Salvador eventually frees Maggie and she’s restored back to normal. Henry cradles Maggie in his arms whilst she recovers.

SALVADOR
“Assume your position, Doctor! And ready with your sword!”

DOCTOR
(calls) “Excuse me? Does anyone have a sword I can borrow?”

BUCHANAN
“I have a sword here, Doctor! Finest Scottish brand! I’d like to have it back mind!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you, Mr. Buchanan!”

BUCHANAN
“Here you are! Catch!”

Buchanan chucks his sword over to the Doctor. The Doctor catches it firmly in his hand, whilst Nyssa and Billy come beside him.

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Doctor, you can’t fight Salvador like this! He’ll be too strong for you! You know that as much as we do! He’s too powerful!”

DOCTOR
“I’m sure it’ll be a fair fight, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“I have an inkling that Salvador doesn’t understand the meaning of ‘fair’!”

BILLY
“Nyssa’s got a point, Doctor. I’d rather we didn’t lose you!”

NYSSA
“If Salvador gets killed Doctor, you’ll be killed too! You seemed to imply this earlier when we were in the power chamber with him!”

DOCTOR
“Please, you two! I know what I’m doing!”

Just then, Salvador calls to the Doctor.

SALVADOR
(calls) “Are you ready for me now, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(gradually; to Nyssa) “Nyssa? No matter what happens, thank you so much for everything!”

NYSSA
(anxiously) “Doctor please, don’t…”

DOCTOR
(to Billy) “And you, Billy!” (Pause) “Look after Nyssa for me, will you?”

BILLY
“I will, Doctor. I will. You can count on that!”

SALVADOR
(calls) “Well, Doctor?”

The Doctor braces himself.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Yes, Salvador! I’m ready for you!”

SALVADOR
“Take your position then, Doctor!”
