16. Duel With Swords

SCENE #158 – EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
It is now night-time and everyone switches on lamp to see through the dark. The Doctor and Salvador take their fighting positions outside the entrance to the Chieftain’s Caves.

NYSSA
(calls) “Everyone! Stand well back from the Doctor and Salvador!”

Everyone follows Nyssa’s instructions as they stand back from the Doctor and Salvador at the cave entrance. Moment of silence as everyone watches and anticipates the first blow to be made. Salvador makes a swish with his sword before the Doctor does the same with his. They then step forward, bringing their swords to bear on each other.

DOCTOR
(challengingly; to Salvador) “Ready?”

SALVADOR
(defiantly) “For Scotland?!”

DOCTOR
“For Scotland”

SALVADOR
“On guard!”

Salvador makes his first strike and hits the Doctor on the shoulder. The Doctor cries out in pain. The sword fight begins as the Doctor and Salvador’s swords clash each other more. Salvador cries out enraged as he keeps missing to strike the Doctor with his sword.

MACMILLAN
(impressed) “The Doctor fights well!”

BUCHANAN
(impressed) “Aye, that he does! He must have Scottish blood!”

CARI
“Will you two be quiet?! The Doctor’s having a tough time already!”

Everyone watches as the Doctor and Salvador continue their fight. They edge towards the cave entrance.

SALVADOR
“You’re very good, Doctor! You improve well with your fencing!”

DOCTOR
“I’ve been practising!”

SALVADOR
“So have I! As I said, you maybe good…but you still have much to fear!”

DOCTOR
“Ah but you haven’t seen the quality of my own quarter-stroke, have you?! I can take you apart quite easily, but modesty forbids me!”

SALVADOR
“I’d like to see you try it!”

DOCTOR
“Very well! This battle’s too much out in the open! Why don’t we fight inside your caves! Just to make the challenge more interesting!”

SALVADOR
“Very well, Doctor! Let’s take the fight into the caves just as you say!”

DOCTOR
“Right then!”

The Doctor and Salvador continue fighting with their swords as they enter the caves.

NYSSA
(shouts; concerned) “Doctor! Please be careful!”

DOCTOR
(flushed) “Alright, Nyssa! I know what I’m doing!”

Soon the Doctor and Salvador disappear into the caves, still fighting each other with their swords.

SCENE #159 – INT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
As they take their fight into the caves, Salvador lunges at the Doctor with his sword. The Doctor eventually pushes Salvador and makes a pass at him with his sword.

SALVADOR
(goads) “You’re going to have to do better than that, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Are you surprised that I even brought the challenge into these precious caves of yours, Salvador?! Doesn’t it even make you the least suspicious?!”

SALVADOR
(vengefully) “The one thing I seek from you is to see you dead! I shall destroy you forever, giving me the benefit of satisfaction!”

DOCTOR
(enthused) “Ah! That’s exactly what I thought you’d say! No point in stopping, is there?!”

The Doctor and Salvador continue sword-fighting deeper and deeper into the caves.

SCENE #160 – EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Back outside at the cave entrace…

NYSSA
(to Ches) “Mr. Ches? Are all these the Scottish soldiers you’ve gathered from the battles today?”

CHES
“Didn’t need to gather them up, deary! They seemed to be all here when my wife and I and the two gentlemen got here!”

BILLY
“It’s hard to tell whether there are loads of them.”

NYSSA
“They’ll be enough for what we need.” (to Ches) “Mr. Ches? Can you, Mr. Macmillan and Mr. Buchanan get all of these Scottish soldiers to gather round and to pay attention?”

CHES
“Oh, sure thing! We can do that!” (to Macmillan; Buchanan) “Can’t we, gentlemen?”

BUCHANAN
“Aye with a will!” (to Macmillan) “Won’t we, Alan?!”

MACMILLAN
“Och with a will, James!”

NYSSA
“Then go to it! I shall talk to them myself!”

With that, Ches, Macmillan and Buchanan head off to gather the Scottish soldiers to pay attention.

BILLY
“What do you plan on doing then, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“We have to persuade these soldiers to rebel against Salvador. They’re all victims of this callous war and it’s time for them to get some freedom back into their lives!”

BILLY
“It’ll be hard to convince them surely! They’re looking rough as is from the way they’re bickering among each other! And from the way Mr. Ches, Mr. Macmillan and Mr. Buchanan are trying to get their attention!”

Nyssa and Billy as they see Ches, Macmillan and Buchanan struggling to gain the Scottish soldiers’ attention.

CHES
(cries) “Please, please! Fellow Scots! Will you just listen to me?!”

MACMILLAN
(cries) “Aye, you lot! Will you just listen?!”

As they watch, Nyssa turns to Billy.

NYSSA
“That’s why I need your help, Billy! I need you to support me!”

BILLY
(startled) “Me?!” (Pause) “But what can I say? I don’t think I’m cut out for this sort of thing, Nyssa! I don’t know how to tell them they’ve been working for somebody cranky and that they should pluck up their courage to fight back!”

NYSSA
“Don’t worry, Billy! I have confidence in you!”

BILLY
“You have?”

NYSSA
“Yes! I’m sure you’ll be able to convince them better than me!”

BILLY
(unconvinced) “Really? I’m not so sure!”

As Ches, Macmillan and Buchanan continue to struggle gaining the Scottish soldiers’ attention, Cari steps forward.

CARI
(shouts) “Will you boys please just listen for a moment?! Miss Nyssa and Mr. Billy want to say something!”

The Middle-Age Scots and the Jacobean Scots stop bickering among themselves once they hear Cari. Moment of silence ensues.

CARI
“There you go, Nyssa! I hope I’ve helped a bit!”

NYSSA
(gratified) “Thank you, Cari! I really appreciate that!” (Pause; to Scots) “Listen to me, all of you! You have been working for a man who has been without conscience, soul and compassion! An evil man who’s abused your traditions!”

ALISTAIR
(puzzled) “What say you, lassie?”

EWAN
“Aye! We do nae understand a word you’re saying!”

BILLY
(stresses) “What Nyssa says is true! Please listen to her! You’ve all been duped by a man who’s worse than…what do you call him…Longshanks…and even worse than the Redcoats!”

Moment of silence.

HAMISH
“Go on then, Miss Nyssa!”

DUNCAN
“Aye, we’re listening!”

NYSSA
“Thank you!” (Pause) “Billy’s right! You’ve all been slaves and playthings for a villain named Salvador. [He’s fighting with the Doctor at this moment in the caves…”]

Nyssa continues explaining to the Scottish soldiers outside the Chieftain’s Caves.

SCENE #161 – INT – WEST SECTION, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Meanwhile inside the Chieftain’s Caves, Salvador and the Doctor continue their sword-fight. Swords clash with the Doctor and Salvador bumping into rock cave walls around them. They lunge for each other but miss every time. Salvador smashes his sword against a rock cave wall and it gets caught. After a while of tugging, Salvador gets his sword free and furiously slashes it against the Doctor. The Doctor defends himself instantly as they continue the fight down the cave tunnel in the west section.

DOCTOR
“Getting tired are you, Salvador? You can give up now if you like! Believe me, I really would advise it!”

SALVADOR
“Surrender?! I am Salvador, Doctor! I never surrender!” (Pause) “It’s more likely you’re saying these things in order to back yourself out!”

DOCTOR
“Really, Salvador! Why would I want to do a thing like that?”

A series of clashes and bangs occur as the Doctor and Salvador fight each other with swords down the cave tunnel.

SALVADOR
“You realise of course, Doctor…that if you destroy the power chamber as well as destroying me…you will be obliterating the entire planet of Scotland…and its people with it!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! But Scotland isn’t a real planet, is it?! It’s a fiction of yours! A world which you ensnared me into! So why should I care about a hollow world like this?!”

A few more sword clashes occur between the Doctor and Salvador.

SALVADOR
“Really, Doctor! I expected a much better response than that!”

Salvador and the Doctor hold each other’s swords in mid-air for a moment.

SALVADOR
“You know as well as I do, that you would never risk the lives of so many Scots men and women who live on this planet! You wouldn’t destroy this planet…for the sake of them!”

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “That may well be true!”

Another series of sword clashes occurs between them.

DOCTOR
“Although on the other hand…”

SALVADOR
(astonished) “Doctor! You’re not considering sacrificing the lives of so many people on this planet so that you can destroy the power chamber, are you? That’s hardly you at all!”

DOCTOR
“Oh I’m not considering sacrificing the lives on this planet, Salvador. I don’t need to!”

SALVADOR
(menacingly) “Don’t play games with me, Doctor! You know as well as I do, you can’t shut down the power chamber without completely destroying it!”

DOCTOR
“Ah but I don’t need to destroy the entire power chamber, do I? I just have to weaken the nodes in the power lines and the electrical currents flowing through them. Thus in order for the power chamber to be vulnerable and to completely lose its safeguards in the process! Well…at least…the safeguards which are really harmful and need shutting down.”

SALVADOR
“And how exactly do you intend on doing that, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“That’s for me to know and for you to find out, Salvador!”

Their swords clash again as the Doctor and Salvador knock each other from side to side in the cave tunnel, which gets narrower and narrower. Just then, bagpipe music plays in the background as it echoes from outside the caves. The Doctor and Salvador stop fighting for a moment.

SALVADOR
(bewildered) “What’s that?! What’s happening?!”

DOCTOR
“Well I should have thought that was obvious, Salvador! Somebody’s playing the bagpipes!”

SALVADOR
“What for?! I didn’t order for bagpipes to be played!”

DOCTOR
“Perhaps the Scots are playing them by themselves! They’ve chosen one of their own tunes!”

SALVADOR
(enraged) “No! They can’t play the bagpipes! Not of their own free will! Not unless I command them to! And I haven’t commanded it!”

DOCTOR
(defiantly) “They don’t need your commands anymore, Salvador! Those Scots you abducted have minds of their own! They think for themselves!”

SALVADOR
“No, Doctor! The Scots work for me!”

DOCTOR
(challengingly) “Are you so sure, Salvador? You seem to be losing control of them! Otherwise why would you been perspiring all of a sudden? I would be careful with how you handle that sword of yours by the way, since your hand is shaking vibrantly!”

Salvador keeps a firm grip on his sword as he lets out a cry of rage before striking at the Doctor again.

SCENE #162 EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Outside at the entrance to Chieftain’s Caves, Buchanan plays the bagpipes. The song performed is ‘The Campbells are Coming’. Whilst this song is performed, the Middle-Age Scots led by Hamish and Duncan; and the Jacobean Scots led by Alistair and Ewan march forth into the caves. The Scots have sense of victory and dignity about them, whilst Henry MacDonald is appalled.

HENRY
(appalled) “Hugo?! Maggie, my dear?! Am I going mad or are they playing ‘The Campbells are Coming!’ on the bagpipes!” (shouts)‘The Campbells are Coming’ indeed! Change the song, will you?! Tell the pipers to play the ‘Clan MacDonald is Here’ full blast! Full blast, do you hear?!”

MAGGIE
“Henry, calm down! Calm down! This is hardly the time for a Scottish cultural debate!”

HUGO
(mesmerised) “I don’t know what that girl and boy did, but they’ve certainly taken control of both MacDonald and Mackintosh forces!”

Henry, Maggie and Hugo continue watching as the valiant Scottish soldiers make their way into the caves. Buchanan continues to play the bagpipes.

MACMILLAN
“There they go at last! And accompanied by a fine rendition of a Scottish tune by Mr. Buchanan. That’s Scottish Nationalist pride, that song! See how it thrusts the Scots into glorious victory!”

CHES
“Yes, Mr. Macmillan! Absolutely superb! Your friend Mr. Buchanan handles that Scottish tune very well on the bagpipes!”

CARI
“I’m sure Mr. Buchanan will be pleased to hear you say that when you get a chance to talk to him, Ches my dear.”

Ches, Cari and Macmillan continue watching whilst Billy talks to Nyssa.

BILLY
“We managed to persuade those Scots sooner than I expected, Nyssa! That’s quite remarkable considering!”

NYSSA
“Yes!” (Pause) “You did very well with supporting me, Billy. I’m really glad you helped me with inspiring those Scots by retelling their historical achievements. I don’t know about these Scottish victories you seem to know about.”

BILLY
“I was just making it up as I went along, Nyssa. I wasn’t historically accurate, but it seemed to work.”

NYSSA
“It was brilliant! Thank you so much!”

Nyssa and Billy kiss each other. They then continues to watch the progress of the Scottish soldiers entering the caves.

BILLY
(observantly) “I think that’s the last group of Scots going into the caves as far as I can see.”

NYSSA
“Good! Let’s hope they’ll come back out alive! At least we’ll be giving the Doctor a chance to sort out that power chamber!”

Nyssa and Billy are then interrupted as Henry continues to complain by raising his voice.

HENRY
(shouts) “Change the song! Pipers! Pipers! Change the song to ‘Clan MacDonald is Here’! I command it!”

Nyssa and Billy are then joined by Jeremy and Iona with Gussie and Lucy as they watch.

JEREMY
(groans) “Oh give it a rest, Father!”

GUSSIE
“Your father certainly has a great and powerful voice, Jeremy. I’ll give him that. He certainly knows how to attract attention.”

LUCY
“I wish he would use that voice less often. He’s bound to strain it the way he keeps on shouting!”

Just then, Iona stumbles forward and falls on her knees as she begins to feel giddy and in pain.

IONA
(in pain) “Ooh! No! My head!”

JEREMY
(concerned) “Iona? Iona darling, are you alright?”

IONA
(cringes) “My head! My head’s throbbing! My poor head!”

NYSSA
(concerned) “What’s the matter, Jeremy? Is Iona alright?”

JEREMY
“I don’t know, Nyssa! One minute Iona was standing upright, the next she fell to the ground!”

SCENE #163 – INT – WEST SECTION, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Meanwhile with the Scottish soldiers, Alistair, Ewan, Hamish and Duncan lead their armies through the west section of the Chieftain’s Caves.

DUNCAN
“You know something, Hamish!”

HAMISH
“What, Duncan?”

DUNCAN
“Well…I didn’t realise it until now! But I really think that we’re fighting for our freedom! I can’t understand why I didn’t feel it before! But I do now!”

ALISTAIR
(proudly) “It’s because we are fighting for our freedom, young Duncan lad! Just as Miss Nyssa and Mr. Billy said! Now we shall be able to get our hands on the blaggard who caused us to fight so many times that we never got a chance for our freedom!”

EWAN
“And this time we shall do it right!” (to Alistair) “Fraoch Eilean, Alistair?”

ALISTAIR
“Aye, Ewan!” (cries) “Fraoch Eilean!!!”

All the Scottish soldiers give out their war cry as they charge onwards through the caves to find Salvador and to finish him off.

SCENE #164 – INT – CENTRAL SECTION, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
In the central section of Chieftain’s Caves, the Doctor and Salvador continue their sword-fight as they’re now close to the power chamber.

DOCTOR
“Feeling hungry, Salvador? I could do with some sandwiches!”

SALVADOR
“Mock all you like, Doctor! You won’t be able to live at the end of this!”

DOCTOR
“Oh I’m very optimistic, Salvador! I never give in to despair!”

As their swords clash against each other, the Doctor and Salvador then hear shouts and war-cries echoing from the Scots charging through the caves at a distance.

SALVADOR
(realises) “That noise! I hear it! It’s the sound of troops giving out war-cries! From whom does that sound come from?!”

DOCTOR
“Really, Salvador! You’re not that imaginative, are you? Surely you recognise that sound! It’s the sound of your own Scottish troops, both Middle-Age and Jacobean! And from the sound of it, they don’t seem very happy!”

SALVADOR
(shocked) “What?!”

DOCTOR
“They’re rebelling against you, Salvador! It’s over! Don’t you get it! The Scottish forces you created for MacDonald and Mackintosh! They’re rebelling! And very soon they’ll come for you!”

SALVADOR
“Is that what you think, Doctor? As far as I’m concerned, they won’t get very far with their rebellious tactics!”

DOCTOR
“What do you mean?”

SALVADOR
“Very soon…my servant Iona Mackintosh…will transform into the beast that she has become…and terrify those who stand in her way! Even those who oppose me! In fact…she should be transforming into that creature right now!”

SCENE #165 – EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Back outside at the cave entrance, Iona still suffers as she cringes her head in pain. Buchanan has stopped playing the bagpipes at this point.

IONA
(gradually; shrieks; in pain) “Help me! Please, help me! Jeremy! Mum; Dad! Help me!”

JEREMY
(reassuringly) “Hang on, Iona! I’ll help you!”

LUCY
“No, MacDonald boy! I’ll help her! She’s my daughter!”

GUSSIE
“She’s my daughter too! I’ll help her!”

BILLY
“She asked all you three to help her actually!”

NYSSA
(realises; panics) “Oh no! Everyone, stand back!”

MACMILLAN
“Why, Nyssa? What is it….?”

NYSSA
“Look!”

They all look and see Iona suddenly transforming into the ogress again. Iona lets out a terrifying roar of rage once she becomes the ogress.

CARI
(screams) “Ches! It’s her again! That monster! She’s come back!”

LUCY
“That’s my daughter!”

CHES
(astonished) “Of all the moons of Racta! Where did that just come from?!”

As the ogress roars away, she then heads off towards the caves.

NYSSA
“Look! She’s heading for the caves!”

BILLY
“She’s going to go after the Scots who’ve just entered them!”

JEREMY
(shouts) “No! Iona, stop!”

NYSSA
(anxiously) “It’s no use, Jeremy! She won’t hear you! Her mind’s already succumbed to the power of Salvador as that creature!”

Iona the ogress roars away as she heads towards the caves. Just then, Lord Budt, Mr. Bucc and Mr. Pew step in.

CHES
(astonished) “My people!”

MR. BUCC
(to Pew) “Mr. Pew! Is that laser cannon of yours ready?!”

PEW
“Yes, Mr. Bucc!”

MR. BUCC
“Very well then.” (to Lord Budt) “Whenever you’re ready, my Lord Budt!”

LORD BUDT
(to Pew) “Mr. Pew! Fire at that monster with everything you’ve got!”

NYSSA
(shouts) “No! Don’t shoot!”

JEREMY
“Aye! Not at my fiancée!”

LUCY
“Not at my daughter!”

LORD BUDT
“Fire!”

Mr. Pew fires his laser cannon a dozen times at Iona the ogress to prevent her entering the caves. But it’s no use as Iona sweeps Lord Budt and the others aside into the sky. Lord Budt, Mr. Bucc and Mr. Pew scream their heads off once they’ve been swept aside. Eventually, Iona resumes her approach to the caves.

CHES
(astonished) “Did you see what that monster just did? She just swept aside Lord Budt, Mr. Bucc and Mr. Pew with her huge hand as if they were flies!”

CARI
“I’ve never seen anything like that before! It’s astonishing!”

NYSSA
“We’ve got to stop Iona from reaching the caves! Before she goes in and stops the soldiers!”

JEREMY
(determined) “I’ll stop her!”

Jeremy makes a run for it.

NYSSA
(cries) “No Jeremy, don’t!”

BILLY
“I’ll help him!”

Nyssa stops Billy.

NYSSA
“No, Billy! I’m not about to lose you again, so don’t you dare!”

MACMILLAN
(cries) “Mr. MacDonald, get back here!”

BUCHANAN
(cries) “Aye, get back!”

MAGGIE
(shouts) “Jeremy! Come back!” (to Henry) “Henry, please do something! Get our boy back!”

HENRY
(calls) “Get back over here, boy! That Mackintosh girl of theirs has turned into a monster! She’s not worth it!”

HUGO
(wryly) “Oh yes! That should definitely have done it, Henry!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Jeremy, please get back!”

But Jeremy doesn’t heed to anyone’s words. He eventually stands in front of Iona the ogress at the cave entrance and calls to her.

JEREMY
(calls) “Iona! Iona, my girl! Listen to me! You mustn’t do this! Change back to normal!”

Iona the ogress roars out loud as she kneels down towards the small figure of Jeremy before her.

BILLY
(shocked) “Look, Nyssa! She’s about to pick him up! I don’t know, but she might…”

NYSSA
(cries; panics) “Jeremy! Get away from there! Run!!!”

Everyone calls for Jeremy to run away. But Jeremy remains still as the ogress comes onto him.

SCENE #166 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Meanwhile with the Doctor and Salvador, they continue their sword-fight as they fight their way into the power chamber, the centre of operations within the Chieftan’s Caves. Unfortunately, it seems that the Doctor has already beaten as Salvador has the upper hand. The Doctor backs away against a wall away from Salvador. The shouts and war-cries from Scottish soldiers, both Middle-Age and Jacobean, echo nearby in the caves.

SALVADOR
(triumphantly) “You’ve lost, Doctor! It’s all over! The Scots maybe approaching! But I have the power chamber! I have the upper hand!”

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “Oh, Salvador. If only you behaved like a good boy when you used to be.”

SALVADOR
“Spare me your regrets, Doctor! I shall not adhere to them!”

DOCTOR
“Your diverging me to this power chamber, with the sword fight we’ve just had, has only led to one thing, I’m afraid. And I’m afraid you won’t be pleased on learning what it is!”

SALVADOR
“And what is this thing you seem to think won’t please me as we’re now in this power house of mine?!”

DOCTOR
“This panel behind me!”

The Doctor drops his sword to the ground. He instantly turns round; opens a panel and pulls a number of wires out from it. A number of electrical sparks occur as well as tiny explosions, once the Doctor pulls the wires out from the panel.

SALVADOR
(laughs) “Do you really think you’ve managed to fool me with your sudden acts of sabotage so easily?! You have destroyed the planet Scotland, little knowing I can easily escape from this world without a scratch!”

DOCTOR
“You think so, Salvador? Think again!”

Salvador anticipates that the power chamber is about to explode within a few moments. But as it turns out, nothing happens. Moment of silence.

SALVADOR
(gradually; astonished) “What?! What is this?! The planet should have been destroyed! Your tampering with the panels should have caused that!”

DOCTOR
“You shouldn’t have allowed me and Nyssa into that mainframe of yours, Salvador!”

SALVADOR
(angrily) “What have you done, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“I’ve made a number of alterations to the computer programming and sub-routines on this planet! I’ve managed to embed a security code to embellish independent sub-processing!”

SALVADOR
“What?!”

DOCTOR
“I went into the heart of the computer core whilst Nyssa and I were inside the mainframe. I delved deep into the computer, intent on keeping Scotland safe!”

SALVADOR
(astonished) “But that’s…that’s impossible!”

DOCTOR
“Scotland is completely independent of your control, Salvador! You gave it life! Now the people and its geology on this planet you call ‘Scotland’ can fend for themselves!”

SALVADOR
(angrily) “No! That cannot be! That simply cannot be!”

Just then, the two armies of Scottish soldiers, led by Hamish, Duncan, Alistair and Ewan, enter the power chamber. Both Middle-Age and Jacobean Scots see Salvador before them and they begin to advance on him for an attack.

DUNCAN
(cries) “There he is!”

EWAN
“There’s the man in black those kids talked about!”

HAMISH
“The man who has made a mockery of our heritage!”

ALISTAIR
“Let’s get him, lads!” (cries) “Fraoch Eilean!!!”

War cries and shouts echo as the Scottish soldiers charge at Salvador.

SALVADOR
(calls) “Fellow Highlanders! Servants of Salvador! Stop this futile rebellion!”

But the Scottish soldiers refuse to listen as they keep on charging at Salvador.

SALVADOR
(astonished; angrily) “Stop! I commanded you all to stop! STOP I SAY!!!”

Very soon, the Scottish soldier come upon Salvador as they make to strike at him with their swords and other weapons at their disposal.

SALVADOR
(angrily; shouts) “Keep away from me! Keep away or I’ll erase you out of existence!”

DOCTOR
“No!” (cries; to Scots) “Fellow Scots! Keep back!”

ALISTAIR
“Why?!”

HAMISH
“We have him in our grasp! He’s our enemy! We must kill him for Scottish honour!”

DOCTOR
(cries) “No! There’s no need for that! He’s already defeated!”

EWAN
“He is?”

DUNCAN
“You’ve beaten him?!”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I am the Doctor! And Salvador has lost the day! I’ve ruined his power! He is ruler of Scotland no more!”

Cheers and cries occur from the Scottish soldiers as they’re thrilled and pleased to hear the Doctor’s news.

ALISTAIR
“But it still asks the question, what are we to do with him?”

HAMISH
“Aye! We can’t have a tyrant in our midst! Let’s cut his head off!”

DOCTOR
“No! No blood will be spilled today!”

The Scottish soldiers groan at this.

SALVADOR
(bitterly) “Let them do it, Doctor! Let them express their anger and revenge in the bloodiest of ways!”

DOCTOR
“No, Salvador! You’ll know what that means for me as well as for you!”

SALVADOR
“Exactly! And I’d rather see you dead than be satisfied in defeat at all!!”

DOCTOR
“Unlike you Salvador, I’m willing to show mercy!”

SALVADOR
(bitterly) “I hate you! I hate your existence, Doctor! For everything you represent! You destroyed me, remember?!”

DOCTOR
“Don’t I know it?! And now I’m prepared to rectify my mistake! At least for the time being!”

SALVADOR
“What are you talking about?”

DOCTOR
“It’s over for you, Salvador.” (Pause) “I’ve taken time to observe many components in this chamber. I happen to know of one particular vital component that links very closely to you! And I intend to use it””

The Doctor goes over to a small computer terminal and he lifts up a small gadget from it. He places his fingers on a button on the small gadget, ready to press it.

SALVADOR
“No! Don’t use that, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“I have to, Salvador! For your sake…as well as for others!”

SALVADOR
(pleadingly) “Please, Doctor! Have mercy on me! Show mercy upon little Salvador!” (whimpers) “I know I’ve been a bad boy, Doctor. But…I’m willing to make amends. I’ll undo all the harm I’ve caused! I’ll do anything as long as you don’t press that button!” (weeps) “Please! PLEASE! DON’T PRESS THAT BUTTON, DOCTOR! HAVE MERCY ON ME!”

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “Goodbye…Salvador!”

SALVADOR
(bitterly) “Curse you, Doctor! CURSE YOU!!!”

Eventually, the Doctor presses the button on the gadget he holds in his hand before dropping it to the ground. Salvador howls in rage as he loses control of his power. Within moments, Salvador screams away like mad as he starts to dissolve into nothingness and vanishes. Moment of tense silence ensues.

HAMISH
(astonished) “Man, oh man! That is a sight of devil’s work!”

EWAN
(astonished) “What was all that about?!”

SCENE #167 – EXT – CAVE ENTRANCE, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Outside at the cave entrance, Iona the ogress falls to the ground, suddenly weakened by the shock of disconnection from Salvador. Everyone looks astonished at this.

HENRY
(astonished) “What was all that about? That monster seems to be having a funny turn!”

HUGO
(astonished) “Aye that it did, Henry! That it did!”

MAGGIE
“Thank goodness Jeremy’s safe!”

Nyssa and Billy with Ches, Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan then run over to Jeremy at the cave entrance.

NYSSA
(calls) “Jeremy? Are you alright?”

JEREMY
“Aye! I’ll be alright, lass!”

BILLY
“It’s a miracle you didn’t get eaten by your own girlfriend!”

BUCHANAN
(realises) “Look! The monster’s changing!”

MACMILLAN
(realises) “Aye! She’s turning back! Into Iona!”

Everyone looks to see the ogress regress back into the small fragile form of Iona Mackintosh, who is shattered and exhausted after her ordeal. Lucy and Gussie then over run over to meet Iona whilst Jeremy crawls over to her.

JEREMY
(gently; to Iona) “Iona?””

NYSSA
(cautiously) “Careful, Jeremy!”

JEREMY
“It’s my Iona!” (gently; to Iona) “Iona? Iona, can you hear me?!” (Pause) “Iona?!”

Eventually but slowly, Iona wakes up to see Jeremy’s face looking down on her.

IONA
(weakly) “Jeremy! Is that you?!”

JEREMY
“Yes, Iona! It’s me! It’s your Jeremy!”

Iona struggles to sit up.

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, Iona!”

BILLY
“Here! Let’s help you up!”

Gradually, Iona gets helped to sit up by Nyssa and Billy.

IONA
(gratified; to Nyssa; Billy) “Thank you! Most kind!” (Pause; relieved; to Jeremy) “Jeremy, you’re safe! You’re not hurt!”

JEREMY
(reassuringly) “No, Iona! I’m not hurt at all!”

Iona then bursts into tears.

IONA
(tearfully) “I’m really sorry, Jeremy! I didn’t mean to harm you!”

JEREMY
“No, no. Of course not, lass!”

IONA
(tearfully) “I didn’t know what I was doing! I couldn’t help it! I…I…”

JEREMY
“Come here.”

Jeremy gently embraces Iona in his arms, both comforted by each other’s presence. Gussie and Lucy eventually and gently approach their daughter Iona.

GUSSIE
(gently) “Iona? Iona, my dear?”

IONA
“Mum; Dad? You’re here too! You’re not hurt, are you?”

LUCY
(reassuringly) “No Iona, dear! We’re alright, your father and I!”

GUSSIE
(pleased) “We’re really glad you’re safe, Iona! You’ve got your man to look after you, hey!”

A sense of calm, peace and understanding occurs Iona, Jeremy, Gussie and Lucy in that moment.

SCENE #168 – INT – POWER CHAMBER, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Back inside the power chamber of the Chieftain’s Caves, the Scottish soldiers continue to be bewildered and puzzled.

DUNCAN
“My eyes cannot fathom what I’ve just seen! What just happened here?!”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, everyone! No need to panic! I’ve sent your enemy back to where he belongs!”

HAMISH
“And where is that exactly, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“In the void! The death space where no time or place exists! He deserves to be there in fact! It’s the life he truly deserves!”

EWAN
(puzzled) “Alistair? I don’t understand!”

ALISTAIR
“Neither do I, lad! What’s he on about?”

DOCTOR
(saddened) “Salvador, the lost child. He’ll always be lost where he is now. I had to do it. I brought this on him. It was my fault for his condition. The best I can do was to send him through that void in eternity. Never to cause harm to others. As well as not to cause harm to himself.”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(snaps out of it) “And it seems we need to send you gentlemen back to where you belong! To Scotland! The real Scotland, I mean. On Earth! And to your time and place!”

HAMISH
“Are we going home then?”

DUNCAN
“I thought this was our home, Hamish!”

DOCTOR
“Of course, it will take a considerable amount of time to set up all the equipment in place and to repair the damage I’ve done. But that shouldn’t take too long. Once I’ve brought all the tools from my TARDIS toolkit, I should be able to work on sending you all back in an instant!”

Just then, Nyssa and Billy with Cari, Ches, Macmillan, Buchanan, Henry, Hugo, Maggie, Jeremy, Iona, Gussie and Lucy enter the power chamber.

NYSSA
(relieved) “Doctor! You’re alive!”

DOCTOR
(pleased) “Nyssa; Billy!”

BILLY
(relieved) “Oh am I glad to see you, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“You too, Billy! And you too, Nyssa! I’m pleased to see you all here!”

NYSSA
“I’m glad you didn’t get yourself killed in the end!” (puzzled) “Where’s Salvador anyway?”

DOCTOR
“He’s safe, Nyssa. In a place where he deserves his own existence.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “Beg your pardon, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I’ll explain everything later, Billy.”

NYSSA
(solemnly) “You had to do the unforgivable didn’t you, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “Something along those lines yes, Nyssa. At least he won’t be causing any more harm. I know he won’t! I sorted it out!”

Henry then steps forward.

HENRY
(appalled) “What have you done?! I’m shocked and appalled by what’s just happened!”

DOCTOR
“Ah! Henry MacDonald! I was wondering about you!”

HENRY
“You’ve brought chaos and order to my lands, Doctor! I shall have you arrested and imprisoned on charges of…”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “Congratulations to you, Mr. MacDonald! You’re now the true ruler of Scotland!”

HENRY
“What are you talking about?”

DOCTOR
“You’re the chieftain…and these are your caves, aren’t they? The Chieftain’s Caves?” (Pause) “You own everything that belongs to Scotland, Henry MacDonald! And you have no need of Salvador watching you anymore! Scotland’s yours now!”

HENRY
(stunned) “Is it?” (Pause) “Oh well. Thank you very much, Doctor. I really appreciate it!”

DOCTOR
“Not at all, Henry! All the best to your ownership of these lands!”

HENRY
(satisfied) “Thank you, Doctor! Of course, these were meant to be my lands after all! And I’m very satisfied they are! These were MacDonald lands to own! And I shall rule them wisely!”

MAGGIE
“And I’ll be here to help you to do that, Henry dear.”

HENRY
(to Maggie) “Thank you, my dear.” (Pause) “And since the Racta authorities are concerned about Scotland’s well-being, I’m sure we’d be more than happy to accept their help.” (to Cari) “After all, we do have a Racta lady who happens to be a MacDonald herself! Don’t we, Mrs. Cari of Roid?”

CARI
“Oh yes! I’m sure Lord Budt and the others will be glad to accept your request for help. Once they get back to here to us, that is. I’m not sure how far that ogress…I mean Miss Iona…sweep Lord Budt and the others to.”

IONA
“Yes. Sorry about that.”

JEREMY
“Not your fault, Iona. Not your fault.”

CARI
“And I’m sure the Racta Council led by Lord Budt wouldn’t subjugate Mr. MacDonald and his clan on such terrible charges!” (t0 Ches) “Would they, Ches my dear?”

CHES
“Oh no, Cari my dear! I’m sure they won’t! I’ll see to that!”

HENRY
“Thank you, Roid my man! Thank you very much indeed!”

MACMILLAN
(interjects) “And we shall not have to worry about putting forward our campaign against the MacDonald Scottish clan!” (to Buchanan) “Hey, James?”

BUCHANAN
“Aye that we won’t, Alan! But there’s still much work to be done with the Brotherhood of Scottish Nationalists though! We have to regroup all of our members and tell them on our next strategy!”

NYSSA
(quietly; happily) “It seems that everyone gets a happy ending after all, Billy!”

BILLY
(quietly; happily) “Yes Nyssa! It does seem like that, doesn’t it?!”

Nyssa and Billy hold each other hand in hand, whilst everyone starts to become so busy about the power chamber in the caves.

SCENE #169 – EXT – EILEAN DONAN CASTLE, SCOTLAND – DAY, AFTERNOON
Some days later, the TARDIS is parked on the bridge to the mainland outside Eilean Donan Castle. The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy stand outside the TARDIS as they’re about to say goodbye to Cari, Ches, Macmillan, Buchanan, Jeremy and Iona. Whilst they say goodbye, the song ‘Amazing Grace’ is performed by a piper on his bagpipes in the background as it echoes across the Highland hills.

JEREMY
“Are you sure you won’t stay with us, Doctor? You’ve done so much in saving Scotland! We’d really appreciate you attending our party!”

IONA
“Aye! Please do stay, Doctor; Nyssa; Billy. Since our engagement has been made official for Jeremy and me, I feel everybody should be included in our celebrations!”

DOCTOR
“That’s very kind of you, Miss Mackintosh…”

IONA
(interjects) “Please! Call me, Iona!”

DOCTOR
“Very well then, Iona! It’s very kind of you! But Nyssa; Billy and I must really be going. We’ve tidied up as much as we can with sending the victim Scottish soldiers back to their own time zones. I feel we can do very little else.”

BILLY
(amused) “I’ll never forget when those Scots were so proud to have fought in such a great battle! They said that as much when we sent them back! The Jacobeans and the Scots of William Wallace’s era were so proud to have fought side with each other side by side! Considering the great leaders they had in William Wallace and Bonnie Prince Charlie!”

NYSSA
“Yes! Even though William Wallace and Bonnie Prince Charlie were actually androids.”

CHES
“Jeremy and Iona have got a point though, Doctor! There’s so much to celebrate! Since Cari and I will be spending our lives together on Scotland, now that we’ve sorted out our deal with Lord Kilwhillie at Knockacolly!”

CARI
“Yes! We really would like you to join us so that we can chat more!”

MACMILLAN
(to Doctor) “Aye, man! Get the weight off your chest!” (to Buchanan) “Right, James?”

BUCHANAN
“Aye, Alan! Considering the comradeship and struggles we’ve been through together!”

NYSSA
“Yes, Doctor! Couldn’t we stay a little while longer…?”

DOCTOR
(interjects) “I’m afraid not, Nyssa. This planet exists in its own time continuum and in its own spatial anomaly. And we need to move on as we always do.” (Pause) “But I’m sure we’ll meet again and see how you get on!” (to Ches) “And may I make a suggestion, Mr. Roid?”

CHES
“Sure thing, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Why not visit the real Scotland?! It’s not far! You’ll find it on the third planet in the star system called Sol! You’ll be able to appreciate true Scottish traditions and heritage there!”

CHES
(gradually) “Thanks, Doc. I’ll keep that in mind.”

DOCTOR
“And now…we really must go!”

BILLY
(to Cari) “Bye, Cari! It’s been great meeting you!”

CARI
“Bye, Billy! I hope to see you again soon!”

Cari goes over to Billy and pecks him on the cheek. Billy is slightly stunned and blushes.

BILLY
(stunned; to Cari) “Oh. Thank you, Cari. I hope to see you again soon too!” (Pause; to Ches) “Goodbye, Mr. Roid!”

CHES
“Bye, young man! Look after that girl of yours!”

CARI
“Yes! I do wish you and Nyssa well!”

BILLY
“Thanks, Cari; Mr. Roid. I will look after Nyssa!”

NYSSA
(to Jeremy) “Bye, Jeremy! I hope you and Iona will be happy together!”

JEREMY
“Oh we’ll have to be! Since Father’s become disgruntled about the whole arrangement! We’ll just have to keep our wits up and not let his snooty nose get in!”

IONA
“That’s right! At least Mum and Dad are happy with the whole thing!” (to Nyssa) “Jeremy certainly made an impression on them!”

NYSSA
“Yes! He certainly has!” (Pause) “As Billy has made an impression on me!”

BILLY
“Thank you, Nyssa!”

DOCTOR
(insistently) “Come on, Nyssa; Billy! Time to go!” (to everyone) “Goodbye all!”

Everyone says goodbye as the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy enter the TARDIS and close the doors behind them. Soon the TARDIS dematerialises, making a grinding, whooshing sound as it fades out of thin air. The TARDIS leaves the bridge of Eilean Donan Castle to the mainland clear. The piper’s rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ continues to play, echoing across the Scottish mountains as the TARDIS dematerialises. Stunned by the TARDIS’ disappearance, Ches, Cari, Buchanan, Macmillan, Jeremy and Iona remain still for a moment.

MACMILLAN
“Well! That’s a rare sight I’ve seen in years!”

BUCHANAN
“It’s been a funny number of weeks for me, I daresay!”

JEREMY
“Come on, Iona! Let’s go back inside the house! Everyone will be wondering where we are!”

IONA
(happily) “Right you are, Jeremy! Let’s go!”

Jeremy and Iona make their way back into Eilean Donan Castle, followed by Macmillan and Buchanan. Ches and Cari remain outside for a little while.

CHES
“Are you alright, Cari my dear?”

CARI
“Do you think we’ll be happy, Ches? In our new lives together…on this strange world?”

CHES
“Of course we will, Cari! No question about it! The Scots are fine people!”

CARI
“Yes! They definitely are!” (Pause) “I hope the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy won’t get into too much trouble! Wherever they are!”

The final notes of ‘Amazing Grace’ played by the piper echo, whilst Cari and Ches eventually head off back inside Eilean Donan Castle.

SCENE #170 – INT – TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
Meanwhile in the TARDIS, the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy are in the console room, watching the time rotor rising up and down. They attempt a smooth journey out of the black hole they entered into when they started their adventure on Scotland. A few minutes later, the time rotor slows down to a easy level. It seems that the ship is now on a stable course.

NYSSA
(relieved) “We did it, Doctor! We escaped the spatial anomaly!”

DOCTOR
“Yes, Nyssa! We most certainly did! We’re on a stable course now!”

BILLY
(relieved) “Thank goodness for that!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy watch as the time rotor whirs loudly whilst the TARDIS is still in flight.

NYSSA
“I wonder why Salvador placed his planet ‘Scotland’ in a section of space where’s there’s a black hole! It seems a little ostentatious to me!”

DOCTOR
“What better place to place the planet than set it in an environment where time and space converged with each other! Salvador was able to pluck out the Scottish soldiers to fight in the battles he forced them to fight in!”

BILLY
“You spared that planet afterwards then, Doctor! Like you did with Junglos!”

DOCTOR
“Well, Salvador created those worlds and breathed them with life. If that’s one thing Salvador was good at, there’s no point in wasting life on it.” (Pause) “Though I’m not sure if Sir Compton Mackenzie would be amused.”

NYSSA
“Sir Compton Mackenzie? Who’s he?”

DOCTOR
“A Scottish author! He wrote ‘Whiskey Galore’ and ‘The Monarch of the Glen’. And whilst we were on Scotland…the planet Scotland…it seemed as if Salvador was basing that world on the works of Mackenzie.”

NYSSA
“That seems to be a common occurrence when we bump into Salvador. He always derives his plans and scheming methods with the use of literature and books.”

DOCTOR
“Jane Austen; Robert Louis Stevenson; and now Sir Compton Mackenzie!”

BILLY
“If he’s really trapped in that void you sent him to Doctor, he may have read a lot of books to set up his next colossal plan!”

DOCTOR
“Oh he will, Billy! He will! But I’ll be there to sort it out like I said!” (Pause) “Excuse me for a moment.”

The Doctor heads out of the TARDIS console room, leaving Nyssa and Billy alone together. Moment of silence as Nyssa and Billy gather around the TARDIS console together.

BILLY
(happily) “Well! As the Doctor is aware of our little romance…perhaps we can persuade him to take us to a place where we can spend time together!”

NYSSA
(happily) “Yes! That would be really nice!” (Pause) “What film had you in mind regarding a movie premiere, Billy?”

BILLY
(thinks) “Oh, I don’t know really.” (Pause) “We could see something with Judy Garland, Bing Crosby or Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. ‘The Gay Divorce’ is a film we can go to see! It’s very heart-warming! Or there’s ‘Top Hat’ or ‘Strike Up The Band’!

The Doctor then re-enters the TARDIS console room, carrying a tray of three glasses and a bottle of champagne on it.

DOCTOR
(interjects) “Yes! Well, let me know when you two decide what movie you’d like to see! Then I’ll preset the co-ordinates.”

NYSSA
(surprised) “Doctor? What’s that you’ve got there? A tray with three glasses! And a bottle of…?”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Champagne!”

BILLY
(stunned) “Champagne! What’s it for?”

DOCTOR
“To celebrate! To you two! After all, with you two together, this is a happy occasion to remember! I’ve poured out the champagne into the glasses, so no need to worry.”

NYSSA
(gratified) “Why, Doctor?! This is really thoughtful of you!”

DOCTOR
“Go on, you two! Take a glass each! They won’t bite! One glass, mind!”

Nyssa and Billy take a glass of champagne each from the Doctor’s tray. The Doctor then takes his glass of champagne from the tray, before putting the tray to one side on the TARDIS console.

BILLY
(uncertain) “Doctor? I’ve never tried champagne before.”

NYSSA
“Neither have I. But I’m keen to find out!”

DOCTOR
“Best not to drink too much, Nyssa! Don’t want to spoil your delicate physiognomy! Not to mention behaviour.”

The TARDIS trio raise their glasses of champagne as they’re about to have a toast.

DOCTOR
“Well then! Here’s to you Nyssa and to you Billy! Both of you! Together! Here’s to the future!”

NYSSA; BILLY
“To the future!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy toast their glasses with each other. They then take a sip of the champagne from their glasses. Billy lets out a cough and splutters his champagne, quite startled by what he drinks. Meanwhile, Nyssa meanwhile manages to cope with drinking her champagne, even though she’s quite startled too.

BILLY
(startled) “Well! That’s quite different to what I expected!”

NYSSA
“Me too! Do people really drink this?”

DOCTOR
“I’ve had this bottle for a long time! At least I’ve kept it in a time freeze for a good occasion.”

BILLY
“Yes! Thank you, Doctor. I’m glad you don’t hold a grudge against me and Nyssa being…together.”

DOCTOR
“Of course not, Billy. After all! You and Nyssa deserve each other!”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
“I do hope Jeremy and Iona will be alright in their lives together. As well as Cari and her husband.”

BILLY
“Yeah. And that they won’t get bothered by Salvador again! In any way or form.”

DOCTOR
“Oh of course not, Billy! Salvador can’t get in reaching distance of anybody whilst he’s in that…”

Just then in the Doctor’s mind, he seems to hear the faint sound of cold mocking laughter. It is somewhat familiar, like Salvador’s, as the Doctor faintly hears it during the TARDIS time rotor’s whooshing as it goes up and down.

NYSSA
(notices; concerned) “Doctor? Are you alright? There’s nothing wrong, is there?”

BILLY
(concerned) “Hey, Doctor? You’re not troubled by anything, are you?”

However, the faint laughter stops inside the Doctor’s mind. Moment of silence ensues.

DOCTOR
(dismissively) “No! No, of course not!” (reassuringly) “Everything’s alright, you two! Nothing to worry about.”

But despite the Doctor’s reassuring words to Nyssa and Billy, he still remains troubled. The TARDIS continues its journey through the time vortex as the trio head off on their next adventure.
