REPRISE

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “Nyssa, meet Salvador! Salvador, meet Nyssa!” (to Salvador) “I take it you’re responsible for setting all of this up hey, Salvador?”

SALVADOR
(mockingly; triumphantly) “You have fallen into my trap, Doctor! And now you and your friend have been caught! I am the ruler of this world! Welcome to my Scotland, Doctor!”

In an instant, a hologram gets activated in the room. Nyssa and the Doctor are quite startled once they see the hologram appear before them.

NYSSA
“Doctor, he’s activated a holographic image! He’s showing us a planet-like structure!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Yes! Recognise it, Nyssa?”

It takes a short while before Nyssa registers and recognises the holographic image she sees before her.

NYSSA
(realises; shocked) “Doctor! It’s exactly like the Scotland map that Jeremy showed to us in that book of his! The one where Scotland looked all out-of-place and the geography seemed inaccurate and incorrect!”

DOCTOR
“It seems I was wrong, Nyssa! That map that Jeremy showed us in his book was the correct map after all! The correct map for Scotland!”

NYSSA
“So…Scotland is…”

DOCTOR
(finishes) “Yes, Nyssa! Scotland is a planet!” (Pause) “We’re on the planet Scotland!”

SCENE #84B – INT – MAIN HALL, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT

SALVADOR
(cruelly) “Well, Doctor? Aren’t you going to say what you usually say?” (mockingly; mimics Doctor) “‘You can’t do this Salvador. It’s not allowed. You can’t make a world like this as you have made it!'” (venomously) “Well tough! Because I have!”

DOCTOR
“Release us, Salvador! Let’s talk about this! I can help you!”

SALVADOR
“Like I’m ever going to listen to you…again!” (to Henry) “Henry! See to it that these two enemies to the Clan MacDonald don’t escape! Your virtues and traditions in Scotland depend on it!”

HENRY
“You can rely on me, Lord Salvador!” (to Stevie) “Stevie! See to it that you and your men don’t let these enemies of the MacDonalds escape! Our virtues and traditions in Scotland depend on it!”

STEVIE
“Aye, Mr. MacDonald! We will and that!”

With that, Stevie and the castle guards tighten their hold on Nyssa and the Doctor, complying with Henry’s instructions.

NYSSA
(protests; to guards) “There’s no need to be so rough on my arms, you guards!”

DOCTOR
(to Salvador) “How have you done it, Salvador?! Like last time I guess? With Junglos?! A world which you created?!”

SALVADOR
“This world I have created exists outside the boundaries of time! The Scots wanted freedom! This is the best I can offer them!”

HENRY
“And we’re mighty proud of having our own Scottish home!” (to Hugo) “Aren’t we, Hugo man?”

HUGO
“Aye! Couldn’t be happier!”

SALVADOR
“You see, Doctor! These people have done as I’ve commanded them! I have fulfilled their desires! Something which I know…you can never give them…with the powers you possess!”

DOCTOR
“I don’t give them lightly, Salvador! There are rules to be applied!”

SALVADOR
(laughs mockingly) “Rules?! Bah! Have you known me to listen to rules?!”

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “No. No, I suppose not.” (Pause) “But it’s horrendous and you just don’t know it, Salvador!”

NYSSA
(realises) “Doctor, this Salvador? He said this world exists outside the boundaries of time! The TARDIS was driven off course and it entered into a black hole! A void! And the TARDIS instruments detected a space entity with a mass equivalent to one hundred and fifty thousand and two million tonnes!”

DOCTOR
“And the void is the boundaries that exist outside space and time!” (realises; to Salvador) “That’s what this world is, isn’t Salvador?! You created this world of Scotland out of your imagination and placed it here inside this dark void outside the timelines where you knew the TARDIS would be transferring through the time vortex! This was how you were able to divert us off course! Just as before when you pulled the TARDIS off course to Junglos!”

SALVADOR
“You’re such a gullible man, Doctor!”

NYSSA
“And it’s how you’re able to transfer people from different time zones of Scotland – the real Scotland on Earth – and place them into your version of that place!” (Pause) “I’m right, aren’t I?…by the look on your face!” (Pause) “I wonder how you did it!”

DOCTOR
(understands) “Chieftain’s Caves, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
(puzzled) “Chieftain’s Caves?”

HENRY
(bellows) “Enough!” (to Salvador) “What are we to do with them, Lord Salvador?”

SALVADOR
“I shall decide upon their fate later!” (Pause) “Send them down to the dungeons! Have them locked up!”

HENRY
“Just as you say, my lord!”

JEREMY
(protests) “No, Father! You can’t do this!”

MAGGIE
(interjects; to Henry) “Uh, dear. Perhaps it would be better if we locked them in their guest room. It’s more comfy [than…”]

HENRY
(bellows) “Do not question the word of Salvador, my family! Salvador’s instructions are for them to be put into the dungeons! And in the dungeons they shall go!”

SALVADOR
“No!”

HENRY
(astonished) “No?!”

DOCTOR
(astonished) “No?”

SALVADOR
“No!” (Pause) “On second thoughts, do put them in their guest room! Mrs. MacDonald has a point! Let them rest! It may be the last time they ever get to rest in their beds!”

NYSSA
“Sudden change of heart?”

SALVADOR
“Take them away and lock them in their guest room! I can’t bear to see the sight of them!”

HENRY
(to Stevie; Toker) “Stevie; Toker! Escort them to their guest room at once!”

TOKER
“Yes, sir!”

STEVIE
(to Nyssa; Doctor) “Right, you two! Come with us!”

With that, the Doctor and Nyssa get escorted roughly upstairs to their guest room by Stevie and the castle guards.

DOCTOR
(pleads) “Salvador! Please listen!”

But the Doctor’s pleas get ignored as he’s pushed upstairs with Nyssa by Stevie and the castle guards. Salvador then turns to address Henry.

SALVADOR
“Henry MacDonald! We have much to talk about! Come and see me in the drawing room! And bring your friends with you! Your victory for the caves must be obtained!”

HENRY
(delighted) “Absolutely, my lord! I couldn’t agree better!”

SALVADOR
“I shall be waiting for you!”

With that, Salvador disappears from sight, leaving Henry with Maggie, Jeremy, Hugo and Ches as they stand about in the main hall of the castle.

HUGO
(amazed) “Well, that’s a way to go and no mistake!”

MAGGIE
(anxiously) “Henry, my dear? I hope you’re not doing things to hastily, are you?”

JEREMY
(appalled) “I’d say he is! He’s treating the Doctor and Nyssa with disrespect! They’ve done nothing to us! Why should we listen to Salvador and obey his commands so that the Doctor and Nyssa can be humiliated…?”

HENRY
(interrupts) “I shall be talking with Salvador to discuss arrangements for the battle! I’m sure that’s vital to this campaign of strategy!” (to Hugo) “Hugo? I’d like you to accompany me!” (to Ches) “You too, Roid! You should have the privilege of appreciating the moment of total Scottish victory!”

HUGO
(delightedly) “This is absolutely ripping stuff, Henry! Of course, I shall be happy to attend this meeting!”

HENRY
“Of course, this is a moment where all the MacDonalds concerned should be aware of! Every family member of this clan must be alerted to the campaign of strategy!”

MAGGIE
(slightly annoyed) “I suppose you’d want me to see to it that Toker calls up all the MacDonalds’ not present on the telephone then, Henry?”

HENRY
(to Maggie) “If you would be so kind as to do so, dearest!” (to Hugo) “Come, Hugo! We mustn’t keep Lord Salvador waiting, must we?”

HUGO
“Indeed we mustn’t, Henry! Indeed we mustn’t!”

JEREMY
(protests) “Father, I must protest…!”

HENRY
(dismissively; to Jeremy) “You’re not invited, Jeremy!” (to Ches) “Roid? Aren’t you coming to join us in the drawing room?”

CHES
“If you’ll excuse me, Mr. MacDonald. There’s something I have to do before I can join you.”

MAGGIE
“Check up on your wife I expect, Mr. Roid?”

CHES
“Something like that, yes. Send a message to someone. I’ll join you as soon as I can, Henry.”

HENRY
“Very well.” (to Hugo) “Hugo?”

HUGO
“To the drawing room it is, then!”

JEREMY
(protests) “Father!”

But Jeremy’s protests are ignored, as Henry and Hugo head off to the drawing room. Ches then heads off unobserved whilst Jeremy and Maggie remain in the main hall of the castle.

JEREMY
(agitated) “Honestly, that man’s insufferable! I can’t believe he’s so involved in this whole mad scheme affair he’s in!”

MAGGIE
“I wish Toker would come back down here! I’ve got things to do!” (Pause; realises; puzzled) “Where Mr. Roid, by the way? He’s gone quicker than I expected!”

JEREMY
“He must have slipped out whilst we were not looking!”

SCENE #85 – INT – WEST SECTION, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Meanwhile, back in the Chieftain’s Caves, Billy, Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan are terrified out of their wits as the monstrous ogress advances towards them. Cari screams whilst the ogress growls and roars at them.

MACMILLAN
“Stop screaming please, Miss Cari! You’ll make her even angrier if you keep on like that!”

CARI
“I can’t help it, Mr. Macmillan! This monster’s terrifying to look at!”

The ogress roars again, causing also for Cari to scream again.

BUCHANAN
“We must get away from here!”

MACMILLAN
(wryly) “Oh you hadn’t thought of that, had you?!”

BUCHANAN
(to Billy; Cari; to Macmillan) “Come on lassie; come on laddie; come on Alan! Away we must!”

BILLY
“Wait! Just wait a minute!”

CARI
“Why wait, Billy? Mr. Buchanan’s idea seems to be an ideal one!”

BUCHANAN
“Come on, Billy! What are ye waiting for?”

BILLY
“I was thinking of some way we can scare this creature off! Then we’ll have a better chance of escaping!” (Pause; thinks; to Macmillan) “Pass me that lamp light of yours!”

MACMILLAN
“What?! This oil lamp of ours? What are you going to do with it?”

BILLY
“Just pass it over to me, will you!”

Reluctantly, Macmillan passes over the oil lamp to Billy. Billy takes the oil lamp and holds it up to the ogress.

BILLY
“Now! If I hold this right up to the ogress’ face, she might see it and that’ll scare her off!”

CARI
(anxiously) “Be careful, Billy! That ogress is more vicious from where I’m standing!”

MACMILLAN
“You can’t stand up to that beast like that with our oil lamp!”

BUCHANAN
“Ach no, you can’t! It’s suicide! You’re more likely to be eaten!”

BILLY
“Well that’s a chance I’ve got to take!”

Billy then steps closer towards the ogress as he shines the oil lamp in front of her face.

BILLY
(nervously; to ogress) “Now listen, girl! If you don’t leave us alone, I’m going to shove this oil lamp right in your face! And you won’t like it!”

The ogress roars as she continues to advance.

BILLY
(cries; to ogress) “Didn’t you hear what I said? I said I’ll shove this lamp in your face!”

But the ogress ignores Billy and keeps on advancing.

BUCHANAN
(cries) “Get back, lad! You’re playing with death!”

CARI
(cries) “Billy, please! Stay away from that thing!”

BILLY
(calls back; to Cari) “It’s alright! I know what I’m doing!” (to ogress) “I gave you a fair warning, girl!”

The ogress roars even louder as she then picks up Billy with her hands from the ground. Billy cries out loud startled once he’s been picked up by the ogress.

BILLY
(cries; startled) “Whoa! Whoa!”

CARI
(cries) “Billy! Oh no! She’s got you!”

The ogress roars in Billy’s face.

MACMILLAN
“It’s too late! She’s going to eat him!”

CARI
(cries; despairs) “No!”

But as the ogress opens her mouth…

BILLY
(apprehensively; to ogress) “Suit yourself! This may burn a little!”

…Billy then throws the oil lamp into the ogress’ face. The ogress roars out loud angrily and in agony as she drops Billy to the ground. Billy watches as he sees the ogress shriek out in pain, burying her face from the blow of the oil lamp.

BILLY
(apologetically; to ogress) “I did warn you!”

Billy then runs back to where Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan are as the ogress continues to shriek in pain.

BILLY
“There you are! What did I tell you? I told you I had it all under control!”

CARI
(astonished) “Did you just throw that lamp into the monster’s face?”

BILLY
“Yes! Well, I had to! She picked me up and I couldn’t scare her so easily with thrusting the lamp into her face! So I had to throw it! At least she’s not focused on us now! She’s focused more on herself!”

MACMILLAN
(annoyed) “What a great idea that was, laddie! To throw the lamp into the poor beastie’s face!”

BUCHANAN
(annoyed) “And now we have no lamp!”

BILLY
“No. We have no lamp.”

BUCHANAN; MACMILLAN
“No!”

BILLY
(triumphantly) “But we have a torch!”

Billy takes out his torch from his pocket and switches it on.

CARI
“Well done, Billy!”

BILLY
“Thanks, Cari!” (Pause) “Come on! Let’s get going before that monster gets her face back to normal, at least.”

BUCHANAN
“Right! Let’s head off!”

MACMILLAN
“Where shall we head off to though, James? Left or right!”

BUCHANAN
“It doesn’t matter where he head off to, Alan! Let’s get away from her! From that monster!”

With that, Billy, Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan head off as they run away from the ogress. They head off deeper into the caves. Once they’ve gone, the ogress continues to groan and grunt in pain as she buries her face in her large hands. Very soon, the ogress gradually transforms into a human being. She becomes a young woman who sobs bitterly whilst burying her face in her hands. It happens to be Iona Mackintosh as she crumbles to the floor and cries out over the pain she suffers with.

SCENE #86 – INT – DRAWING ROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
In the drawing room of Eilean Donan Castle, Salvador conducts his meeting with Henry and Hugo. They sit in their chairs as they discuss certain matters regarding the planet Scotland.

SALVADOR
Scotland must be protected, MacDonald! You must gather all of your clansmen and women ready! For the battle for the Chieftain’s Caves must commence!”

HENRY
“Absolutely, my lord. I quite agree with you! I told my wife just now to arrange for all of the MacDonalds to attend the gathering here at Eilean Donan Castle!” (to Hugo) “Didn’t I do so, Hugo?”

HUGO
“Yes, Henry! You certainly did!”

SALVADOR
“You must also muster your armies to be ready to fight outside the entrance to the caves tomorrow morning, MacDonald!”

They are then interrupted as Jeremy enters the drawing room.

SALVADOR
(furiously) “What is the meaning of this?!”

HENRY
(agitated) “Jeremy, my boy! What are you doing here? I told you, you’re not invited!”

JEREMY
“Oh don’t mind me, Father. I just wanted to fetch something.”

HENRY
(agitated) “Well hurry it up and be off with you! We’re formulating a plan of campaign here! And no interruptions while we’re talking!”

JEREMY
“Yes, Father.”

HUGO
“You were saying, Lord Salvador?”

SALVADOR
(continues; coldly; to Henry) “You MacDonald must muster the armies of Scotsmen from the occupation of Longshank’s England to gather together! See to it that their leader Wallace is fully vitalised to keep up the fight!”

HENRY
“Yes, yes. I see, I see.”

SALVADOR
“You must also contact your enemy, the Mackintoshes!”

HENRY
(astonished; uneasily) “The Mackintoshes?! What do I need to contact them for? I don’t intend to reveal my battle plans to them!”

SALVADOR
“You don’t need to. But you do need to let them know that you intend to fight their men, the Jacobeans, on the battlefield too! So you must let them know to prepare for battle!”

HENRY
(realises) “Ah!” (Pause) “I was wondering when you’ll test me on that!”

HUGO
(puzzled) “Pardon me for asking, Lord Salvador! But is all this army mustering; contacting the Mackintoshes and the battle for Henry’s possession taking place tonight?!”

SALVADOR
(bitterly) “Of course it is, you fool! Time is short and speed is of the utmost! The battle must commence tomorrow or it will be too late! See to that the MacDonalds are gathered and that all the preparations for battle are made!”

Just then, Jeremy accidentally drops the glass whiskey canter and it smashes to the floor.

HENRY
(shocked) “Jeremy! What do you think you’re doing?!”

JEREMY
“My apologies, Father. I dropped your whisky canter!”

HUGO
“What was that?!”

HENRY
(appalled) “Jeremy! How could you do such a thing?! That’s one of my favourite malts!”

JEREMY
“Sorry, Father.”

HENRY
(impatiently) “Have you finished here, boy?!”

JEREMY
“Yes, Father! I’ve managed to…get the thing I wanted!”

HENRY
“Well be on your way now! Hugo and I want to finish this discussion with Lord Salvador as soon as possible!”

JEREMY
“Yes, Father. I’ll be out of your hair now.”

With that, Jeremy makes to leave the room.

SALVADOR
(menacingly) “So, Henry MacDonald! Do you understand what it is I ask you to do?”

HENRY
“Yes, my lord.” (to Hugo) “Hugo! Fetch my wife! Ask her if she’s managed to get Toker to call all of the MacDonalds for the gathering!”

HUGO
“Yes, Henry.”

HENRY
“Meanwhile, I shall attend to the matter in hand and phone the Mackintoshes!”

SALVADOR
“And after you’ve done that, you must use all the instruments at your disposal to summon your armies again!”

Whilst they talk, Jeremy opens the door and is about to leave before he bumps into Ches on the way out.

JEREMY
“Oh! Sorry, Mr. Roid!”

CHES
“That’s quite alright, young man! Accidents will happen!”

JEREMY
“I was just leaving!”

With that, Jeremy leaves the room. Ches enters the drawing room to find Henry and Hugo with Salvador, sitting in their chairs.

CHES
(cheerfully) “Hello, Henry; Hugo! Have I missed much?”

SCENE #87 – INT – DRAWING ROOM, CAWDOR CASTLE – NIGHT
Meanwhile, in the drawing room of Cawdor Castle, Gussie Mackintosh sits in a big armchair, twiddling his fingers. Lucy paces about the room, getting all anxious.

GUSSIE
“Lucy, dear! Will you stop pacing about like a woman all wound-up!”

LUCY
“I am a woman all wound-up, Gussie! I have a very good reason to be wound-up! And if you have no consideration for a woman being wound-up, then you shouldn’t bother a woman who’s being wound-up at this moment!”

GUSSIE
“You know very well what I meant, Lucy! Just calm yourself down!”

LUCY
“How can I calm myself, dear? Our daughter is missing! Aren’t you worried?!”

GUSSIE
“Of course I’m worried, dear! It’s not like Iona! To leave us without letting us know her whereabouts!”

LUCY
“It’s that MacDonald boy! She’s crazy about him!”

GUSSIE
“That’s precisely what I mean! She wasn’t like this before she got involved with the MacDonalds and their heir! I shall never forgive that Henry MacDonald for this! He hasn’t heard the last of it!”

LUCY
“There’s also of course that boy and the woman whom the guards captured the night before! They’ve gone too!”

GUSSIE
“Badger said that they both had some excuse saying they weren’t feeling very well. But I know it was all a ploy! To kidnap our daughter!”

LUCY
“Now, Gussie! It can’t be that surely!”

GUSSIE
“Oh believe me, Lucy! I know the foreign mind! Those two loonies aren’t Scottish! They could even be working for the MacDonalds under a false guise! I know it! I just know it!”

LUCY
“But where would they have taken her to though?”

GUSSIE
“I don’t know. But I know this for certain! Wherever that Miss Cari and Mr. Billy went, I’m sure they had some hidden agenda!”

Just then, Badger enters. He carries a telephone on a tray to give to Gussie.

BADGER
“Pardon me, sir. Forgive the intrusion…”

GUSSIE
(impatiently) “What is it now, Badger?”

BADGER
“You’re wanted on the telephone, sir! I’ve brought the phone in on a tray to save you getting to the main hall.”

LUCY
“Who is it, Badger?”

BADGER
(hesitates) “It’s…”

Moment of silence.

GUSSIE
“Well come on, Badger! Who is it? Spit it out!”

BADGER
(gradually) “It’s Mr. Henry MacDonald wanting to speak to you, sir.”

GUSSIE
(fumes) “Henry MacDonald!”

BADGER
“Yes, sir.”

GUSSIE
(gradually; fumes) “Give me that phone, Badger!”

Badger passes the telephone on the tray over to Gussie. Gussie snatches the phone from him.

LUCY
“What are you going to say to him, Gussie?! About our daughter Iona?”

GUSSIE
(reassuringly) “Don’t worry, my dear. I’ll sort this one out!”

Gussie then speaks into the telephone receiver.

GUSSIE
(through telephone) “Now listen here, MacDonald! I want to know what’s happened to….” (stops; Pause) “What’s that?” (Pause) “But I…” (stops; Pause) “What?!”

LUCY
(anxiously) “What is it, dear?”

GUSSIE
(hushes; to Lucy) “Ssh!” (through phone) “But…but…but…you can’t be serious, man! You just can’t! And at a time like…” (stops; Pause) “Well yes, I am keen on it! But that’s hardly the point. I…” (stops; Pause) “No, but I…” (stops; Pause) “Yes, well…” (stops; Pause) “You’re mad, you know that?! I’ll…” (stops; Pause; sighs) “Very well, MacDonald! We’ll do it on your terms!” (Pause) “Don’t worry, I’ll keep my side of the bargain!” (Pause) “Yes, you can be reassured I’ll send…” (stops; Pause) “Very well. I’ll…”

The phone then cuts off at Henry MacDonald’s end and Gussie becomes startled. Gussies puts the phone receiver down and hands the telephone back to Badger.

GUSSIE
“Thank you, Badger. You may go now!”

BADGER
“Very good, sir.”

Badger leaves the room, taking the telephone on the tray with him. Moment of silence ensues.

LUCY
“Well, Gussie? What was it? What did MacDonald want?”

Another moment of silence.

GUSSIE
“It was Henry MacDonald, dear.”

LUCY
(shrewdly) “I guessed that! What did he want from you?”

GUSSIE
(gradually) “He wanted to inform me that the battle for what we’re fighting over is about to commence! And that he has advised me to muster the Jacobean army! So that they can be ready to wage war outside the cave entrance!”

LUCY
(shocked) “What?! They want us to prepare the armies to be ready to fight? This evening?!”

GUSSIE
(ponders) “Things seem pretty serious, Lucy! The stakes are high! And the value of Scotland is waning! This battle is to end all battles! And to decide which laird has the right to be chieftain and the right to own the caves!”

LUCY
“They can’t be serious! They can’t mean to ask us such a request!”

GUSSIE
“Oh they’re dead serious alright, Lucy! They insist we prepare! MacDonald is on the higher ground than us, you see!”

SCENE #88 – INT – GUEST BEDROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
Meanwhile with Nyssa and the Doctor, they’re now in their guest bedroom. They’re now locked up as prisoners as they wait.

NYSSA
“At least they’re being civil to us and haven’t put us back in those dreadful dungeons.”

DOCTOR
“I’m not really sure ‘civil’ is the right word to describe the situation we seem to be in, Nyssa. Not from where Salvador stands.”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
“Doctor…this Salvador? How long have you known him?”

DOCTOR
“How long? Oh…that would be rather hard to explain in words, Nyssa. So don’t even tempt me to endeavour the specifics. Let’s just say, I knew him indefinitely!”

NYSSA
“How did you know him, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Well…if you really wish for the load-down Nyssa…it all started on Gallifrey!”

NYSSA
“Gallifrey?! Is he a Time Lord then?”

DOCTOR
“Oh no! He’s no Time Lord! He’s human! Just like Billy is and all the Scots present on this world of his!”

NYSSA
“I thought that human presence was forbidden on Gallifrey. You told me so yourself.”

DOCTOR
“So I did. But not on this occasion, I’m afraid.”

NYSSA
(concerned) “What happened?”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Well…it was a long time ago after the Time Lords gained the power to travel through time by the experiments that Omega made. Way before I had even left the Time Lords and sought a life of time travel. About several hundred thousand years ago.”

NYSSA
“I see. Do go on.”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “The Time Lords opened up the time scoops to gather and collect knowledge from all quarters of the universe. One of those groups collecting information was using a time scoop to open up variant temporal portals to access the inner dimensions of the known universe.”

NYSSA
“And you were part of that group.”

DOCTOR
“I wondered when you’d guess.” (Pause) “We, including myself, accessed many time zones from different times and different places from Elizabethan England and the Second World War on Earth to the Cromaton Reign and the Venilixar Vedont on Dalkir Province.”

REPRISE OF SCENE #1 FROM ‘THE AUSTEN CODE’
The Doctor talks over a reprise of Scene #1 from ‘The Austen Code’, where the Battle of Santa Cruz De Tenerife of 1797 takes place.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“On one of these occasions when we opened up one of the temporal portals, we accessed a battle that occurred on the Canary Islands. This battle was the Santa Cruz De Tenerife Battle in seventeen ninety-seven. We opened up the portal to see a glimpse of the battle.”

Battle noises occur as from Scene #1 of ‘The Austen Code’. On the outskirts of Santa Cruz De Tenerife, the Spanish boy from that scene pants as he runs away from the battle.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“At the same time, a little boy from that place was running away from the battle. He must have been terrified…to witness so much death and horror as that!”

The boy trips over and falls to the ground. The boy splutters sand out of his mouth, as he weeps and cries, lasting for about eight seconds. He moves forward on his hands and knees, before he stops again and has another good cry.

SPANISH BOY
(cries) “Mama!” (shrieks) “Mama!”

The Spanish boy sobs further.

SPANISH BOY
(sobs) “Quiero que mi mama!”

The boy eventually crawls forward as he gets up to his feet from the ground. Slowly he walks forward, before his feet are immersed in sea water.

DOCTOR (V’O)
“Whilst the boy was crying for his mother, the portal opened up before him in an instant!”

Just as the boy walks deeper into the water, a sudden blinding light appears. The boy is startled and terrified as the light blinds him. He shields his eyes from the light.

SPANISH BOY
(startled) “Qué es esto?”

DOCTOR (V’O)
“He wasn’t to know what he was in for when he saw the light. But he walked straight through it, intrigued and fascinated.”

The boy becomes curious as he realizes there is something in the light. Soft whispering echoes from within the light. The boy listens to what is being said. He then speaks in a hypnotised voice, without any hint of mourning for his mother.

SPANISH BOY
(slowly) “Sí. Me dé un paso hacia adelante! Yo paso adelante que ahora!”

The Spanish boy walks forward through the water and enters into the light. The boy then disappears before the bright light fades away. The Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife still goes on in the background.

SCENE #88B – INT – GUEST BEDROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT

DOCTOR
“As soon as that little boy came through the portal, he ended up on Gallifrey. The High Council of Time Lords was angry with us and ordered the termination of the boy’s life. But I protested and took him secretly into my care in order that my people wouldn’t execute him.”

NYSSA
“Don’t tell me, Doctor. This boy…was Salvador, wasn’t he?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. I’m afraid it was.”

NYSSA
“Well, he should have been grateful that you didn’t let the Time Lords execute him. Why should he turn against you? And why does he possess such powers as you seem to suggest?”

DOCTOR
“I haven’t finished yet, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“I suppose what you’re going to tell me is bad. Or seemingly worse.”

DOCTOR
“Salvador was kept under my care, Nyssa. But I couldn’t keep it up for long. So, I did the most unforgivable thing I had ever done in my life.” (Pause) “I tried to make Salvador into a Time Lord.”

NYSSA
“Well that’s hardly bad, is it?”

DOCTOR
“You don’t know what I did, Nyssa.” (Pause) “I’m afraid I was harsh and arrogant in my young age. I put Salvador through so many experiments and treatments that the boy couldn’t manage to cope with what I was trying to do to him. It seemed like torture to the boy. I was plying him with needles and taking blood samples from him which must have been hard for him.”

NYSSA
“That doesn’t sound like you, Doctor. It sounds more like the Master.”

DOCTOR
“I was a different man back then. And the Master was in on the case as well.”

NYSSA
“Was he?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. And I’m thankful he’s not here to witness all this.”

NYSSA
“Do go on, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“You won’t like it, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Please tell me, Doctor. I must know.”

DOCTOR
“Very well.” (Pause) “After putting Salvador through so many experiments, I made him look into the heart of the time vortex, via the use of the temporal schism. The gap in the fabric of reality where time is visible and it hurts your eyes.”

NYSSA
“He couldn’t cope, could he?!”

DOCTOR
“No! He was scared! It drove him insane, just as it did for the Master. He was only eighteen at the time. An adolescent. But I made him look through it and he gained more power than he realised. But not for the best I fear.”

NYSSA
“You made him what he is today! You made him all powerful…and he’s caused this world to be created…against the laws of time which you hold dear.”

DOCTOR
“I was a different man back then. I thought I knew what I was doing. I thought I knew how to function time and control it from where I was. But the Time Lords’ influence made me do things for the worst.” (Pause) “I had to leave Gallifrey because of what I’d done…as well as other things. I killed Salvador that day. The lonely helpless boy who became a Time Lord in human form. But not being able to control it or know its virtues. He became corrupt back then. And he’s even more corrupt than when I first saw him. And it’s my fault!”

NYSSA
“So he’s been responsible for our recent adventures. The temporal convergence in Bath; the plucking of Jane Austen out of time and space; the divergence of the TARDIS to the planet Junglos and the planet Scotland as well as the planets’ creations. He caused all of that to happen…because of you changing his appearance and anatomy.”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(gradually) “I know what I did was wrong. And I regret every minute for all the people I’ve hurt.” (Pause) “I left Gallifrey as soon as I could, Nyssa. I wanted to change my outlook on life. To abandon the ‘traditional ways’ that Time Lords have on non-intervention. To see things in a new light. To have…people like you and Billy…and Tegan and Adric….and all those I’ve encountered on my travels to save the universe in a different way.” (Pause) “I’m better than I was, believe me. And I don’t ask you to forgive me, Nyssa. For I don’t deserve it.”

Another moment of silence.

NYSSA
(gradually) “You’re right, Doctor. You don’t deserve forgiveness.” (Pause) “But I forgive you anyway. For I believe you’re a better man than you were then. For you saved my life as well as others. And I’m thankful. So don’t think you’ve lost my respect for you, because you haven’t.”

DOCTOR
(gradually; happily) “Thank you, Nyssa. You don’t know how much that means to me.”

Moment of silence, as Nyssa and the Doctor become content in each other’s company.

SCENE #89 – INT – CORRIDOR, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
Meanwhile, outside the Doctor and Nyssa’s guest bedroom, Stevie and a few castle guards stand guard outside. Just then, Jeremy comes by as he carries a tray with him. Stevie and his guards train their rifles on him.

STEVIE
(shouts) “Halt! Who goes there?! Friend or foe!”

JEREMY
“There’s no need to shout, Stevie! You know very well that it’s me!”

STEVIE
“You can’t be too sure, Master MacDonald.”

Stevie and the castle guards lower their rifles and relax. Jeremy goes over to them and hands Stevie the tray.

JEREMY
“Sorry to disturb your guard duty, Stevie. But I thought you and your lads would like to have a drink to keep your spirits up.”

STEVIE
“No! We men do not drink when we’re on duty! It’s against our principles!”

JEREMY
(assuredly) “It’s fine Scottish malt. And it comes with my father’s compliments.”

STEVIE
(delighted) “Oh well! In that case, if you say so.” (to guards) “Boys! Take a cup of the stuff while you may.”

With that, Stevie’s castle guards each take a cup of whisky off from Jeremy’s tray. They start to drink their cups down.

JEREMY
(to Stevie) “Do take a cup for yourself, Stevie! I have saved one for you!”

STEVIE
(happily) “Oh aye! That I will! I will! I can nae refuse, can I?! The fine Scottish malt, you say!”

JEREMY
“Aye! Enjoy it, gentlemen! Drink deep!”

Stevie takes a cup of whisky for himself off Jeremy’s tray and drinks it down whilst the others do the same.

SCENE #90 – INT – GUEST BEDROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
Back inside their guest bedroom, the Doctor and Nyssa continue the debate on what they have to do about Salvador.

DOCTOR
“So…now that I’ve told you about Salvador, you must know how serious he can be about his intentions on causing a rift in the fabric of reality and the chaos brought into the entire universe!” (Pause) “So, we must find a way to get out of this room and stop him! Now, with the castle guards…”

NYSSA
(interrupts) “Doctor? Can I tell you something first before we get started on finding a way to escape?”

DOCTOR
(gradually; intrigued) “Of course, Nyssa. Tell me what you wish to say to me.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “I should have told you this before, Doctor. But…I didn’t want to tell you because…I feared the worst of you rejecting it.”

DOCTOR
“Go on, Nyssa. I’m listening.”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
(gradually) “It’s me and Billy.”

DOCTOR
“Yes?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “We’re…well…together. Billy and I.”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Oh. I see.”

NYSSA
“You understand what I’m saying, Doctor? We’re a couple, Billy and I.”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Yes I perfectly understand what you’re trying to tell me, Nyssa. You and Billy are…together!”

NYSSA
(astonished) “You…you understand?”

DOCTOR
“Of course.”

NYSSA
(astonished) “You…you have no objections to that? About us?”

DOCTOR
“Not at all.”

NYSSA
(astonished) “Oh.”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR
“Why didn’t you tell me before when we parted company with Billy?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “I didn’t want to. Billy and I…we agreed to keep it a secret.”

DOCTOR
“A secret?”

NYSSA
“Well…I asked Billy if we’d keep it a secret from you.”

DOCTOR
“From me? Because I may reject you both?”

NYSSA
“Yes.”

DOCTOR
(astonished) “Nyssa! How could you think such a thing? Why do you think I would reject you both?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Because of what happened last time. With Andrew.”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Oh, I see.” (Pause) “You…you regret leaving Andrew, do you?”

NYSSA
“I don’t regret leaving Andrew. I made my choice at the time. And I don’t look back on it!”

DOCTOR
“But…?”

NYSSA
“Well…at the same time, I wish things could have been different. I wish you hadn’t interfered when you did about me staying in Stockbridge. I wish you hadn’t warned me about the prospect of living a life of a girl who couldn’t progress in life with skills such as mine. I could have been with Andrew and found out for myself what it’d be to spend my life with him.”

DOCTOR
“I see.” (Pause) “And you want to have another chance with Billy. To find out what it’s like to share an existence with him in a different place and time.”

NYSSA
“I’m not trying to blame you for anything, Doctor. I understood your intentions when you gave me that choice. You were concerned for me. You advised me to think that decision through before making it.”

DOCTOR
“You want to give Billy a chance to prove himself that he’s the right man for you.”

NYSSA
“He’s naïve to things more than I am. He wants to learn things and find out how to improve himself. That’s what I find most appealing in Billy. And…”

Another moment of silence.

DOCTOR
“Yes? What is it, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “He loves me, Doctor! Billy loves me! And I love him!” (Pause) “I want us to spend some time together before we make the big step. And as we’re travelling together in the TARDIS, I thought we may as well do that.”

DOCTOR
“I see.” (Pause) “Billy’s a fine man, Nyssa. A good boy! I’m sure he’ll try to please you.” (Pause) “You won’t receive any interference from me, Nyssa. If you think he’s the one you’re looking for, then so be it. I’ll always be there in case your intentions change, which hopefully shouldn’t happen.”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Doctor! I really appreciate that!” (Pause) “I can’t wait to tell Billy how wonderful it is that you’ve accepted us!”

DOCTOR
“Me neither, Nyssa. Me neither.”

Another moment of silence.

NYSSA
“You were saying about the castle guards?”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Right! Now, what I thought is…”

Just then, the door unlocks from outside.

NYSSA
(realises) “Doctor! Somebody’s unlocking the door! It could be that Mr. MacDonald!”

DOCTOR
“Stand up, Nyssa! We may well be…”

The door then opens as Jeremy enters.

JEREMY
“Quick, you two! Come with me and we’ll make our way to the cellar! There you’ll have your chance to escape!”

NYSSA
(surprised) “Jeremy! How did you get here?”

JEREMY
“I sneaked into my father’s drawing room and pinched the keys from his desk to these guestrooms whilst he wasn’t looking.” (insistently) “Come on, you two! I’m trying to help you escape!”

DOCTOR
“What about the guards, Jeremy? They’re bound to catch us if they find you helping us to escape!”

JEREMY
“They’re fast asleep and will not wake!”

NYSSA
“Not wake?!”

JEREMY
“I gave those three guards including Stevie a cup of Father’s fine malt each and put sleeping pills in them! They’ll be out for six hours!” (insistently) “Come on, you two! Let’s get down to that cellar while we can!”

DOCTOR
“Thank you so much for helping us, Jeremy! We really appreciate it!”

JEREMY
(urgently) “Come on! Stop blethering and come with me! Come on!”

With that, the Doctor and Nyssa follow Jeremy as they leave the guest bedroom and head for the cellar.

SCENE #91 – INT – CELLAR, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
Eventually, the Doctor and Nyssa with Jeremy’s reach the south wing of Eilean Donan Castle and arrive in the cellar. They make their way downstairs to get to the bottom.

DOCTOR
“Where to now?”

NYSSA
“The iron maiden, I suppose.”

JEREMY
“The passageway will lead you directly into the cave dwellings. It may not be much of an escape route, but at least you won’t have to be executed by my father or anyone else for that matter.”

NYSSA
“Why are you helping us though, Jeremy? How come you trust us?”

JEREMY
(gradually) “I have sympathy for those who have been ill-treated by my father. I believe you two to be good! And you know certain things which I’m not accustomed to. You know something’s wrong with Scotland and I’m giving you the chance to make it right somehow!”

DOCTOR
“Well that’s all very splendid! Now, where’s that iron maiden of yours?”

JEREMY
“It’s over here.”

Jeremy leads the Doctor and Nyssa to where the iron maiden is. He opens the iron maiden door and it swings open to reveal its interior.

DOCTOR
“How sharp are those spikes, Jeremy?”

NYSSA
(interjects) “Very sharp! I pricked my finger on one of them and it was an unpleasant experience!”

DOCTOR
(slightly annoyed) “I believe it was Jeremy I asked, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(exasperated) “Sorry, Doctor. I was expecting you to express sympathy.”

JEREMY
(agitated) “Quiet, you two! I’ll just detract these spikes by pressing this lock. Then you can enter!”

Jeremy presses a button inside the iron maiden to detract the spikes. Eventually, the spikes detract and the inner door of the iron maiden slides back to reveal the dark passageway inside.

JEREMY
“There we are!”

NYSSA
“It’s darker than I thought.”

DOCTOR
“Come on! Let’s go through while we have a chance!”

HENRY
(shouts; interrupts) “Oh no, you don’t! Stay where you are!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Jeremy turn round to see Henry MacDonald standing at the top of the stairs with some castle guards behind him.

JEREMY
(astonished) “Father! How in Scotland’s name did you find us?”

HENRY
“You didn’t think I would be so foolish as to let these Sassenachs escape, did you?! I had help!”

JEREMY
(to Doctor; Nyssa) “Doctor; Nyssa, I swear to you! I didn’t give you the slip! Honest, I’m sure I didn’t!”

NYSSA
“We believe you, Jeremy!”

DOCTOR
“I think the enemy sees and knows too much in my opinion!” (shouts) “Isn’t that right, Salvador? I know you’re there!”

Salvador then enters the cellar and stands on top of the stairs with Henry.

SALVADOR
(triumphantly) “You’re right, Doctor! I see and know things far better than you do! You should know all to well!”

DOCTOR
“You know I do, Salvador. You must also know that I regret what I did!”

SALVADOR
“I do not care what you feel, Time Lord!”

NYSSA
(pleads) “Salvador! Please, listen!”

SALVADOR
(to Henry) “Henry MacDonald! Bring those three back up and take them to the main hall! I have decided to have them shot at dawn!”

HENRY
“A good decision, my lord!” (to guards) “Guards! Bring those three back up here! Including my son!”

The castle guards make their way down the stairs to approach the Doctor, Nyssa and Jeremy. The Doctor, Nyssa and Jeremy stand about casually for a moment. Then, all at once…

DOCTOR
(cries) “Now, Nyssa; Jeremy! Into the iron maiden!”

The Doctor, Nyssa and Jeremy run for it as they make to enter the iron maiden.

HENRY
“They’re escaping!”

SALVADOR
(angrily) “Get them up here this instant! Or you will regret this, MacDonald!”

HENRY
(shouts) “Come on, lads! Get them!”

The castle guards run down the stairs. Meanwhile, the Doctor shuts the iron maiden door with Nyssa and Jeremy inside. Nyssa stops the Doctor shutting the door halfway whilst she’s inside.

NYSSA
(shouts) “What are you doing, Doctor?! Why are you closing the iron maiden door on Jeremy and me?! You must get in here with us!”

DOCTOR
(to Nyssa) “You and Jeremy go on, Nyssa! I’ll find my own way! I hope!”

NYSSA
(cries) “No, Doctor! Get in here this instant!”

DOCTOR
(to Jeremy) “Jeremy! Look after Nyssa for me!”

JEREMY
(to Doctor) “I’ll do that, Doctor.” (to Nyssa) “Come on, lass! Let’s go!”

NYSSA
(protests) “We can’t leave the Doctor, Jeremy!”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “I’ll be fine! Go, Nyssa! The guards are onto me!”

The Doctor shuts the iron maiden door onto Nyssa and Jeremy as they get into the passageway. The inner door inside the iron maiden slides back to close off the entrance. Once the Doctor shuts up the iron maiden completely, he gets caught by the castle guards who come down for him.

HENRY
(shouts) “Good! You’ve got the Doctor, guards! Now get that girl and my son! Open that iron maiden!”

DOCTOR
(wearingly) “I wouldn’t do that if I were you…”

HENRY
(barks) “Open that iron maiden!”

One of the castle guards approaches the iron maiden and opens the door to enter inside. Once he’s opened the door, he ventures forward before shrieking out loud in pain. After a moment, the castle guard falls down to the ground after having walked through the spikes inside the iron maiden. Moment of bitter silence ensues.

HENRY
(startled) “Oh.” (Pause) “Oh dear. That wasn’t exactly what I expected.”

DOCTOR
(bitterly) “Congratulations, Henry! You’ve managed to get one of your guards to walk through the maiden! And I really mean…walk through the maiden! With spikes inside her!”

HENRY
(to Salvador) “See what’s just happened, my lord? I’ve just lost one of my castle guards!”

SALVADOR
(coldly) “It matters not.”

DOCTOR
“You seem to have a shrewd way of disregarding death, Salvador. You sound as if life is easily repairable.”

SALVADOR
(coldly) “But it is, Doctor! You should know that! I can bring people back to life any time I want to! I’m clever enough to do it as you once pointed out!”

Moment of silence.

HENRY
“Does that mean you’ll bring the guard that just walked through the iron maiden back to life then?”

SALVADOR
(coldly) “No. He is not required.”

DOCTOR
(wryly; to Henry) “So artificial, isn’t he?”

Another moment of silence.

SALVADOR
“Take the Doctor back up to the main hall at once! We must reconvene for a conference!”

HENRY
“But what about the others? My son and the girl? Aren’t we going to catch them?”

SALVADOR
“They will not run far! They will soon find themselves at death’s door once they’re inside the caves! When they see what I have in store for them!”

DOCTOR
(troubled) “What’s that supposed to mean, Salvador?”

SALVADOR
(gleefully; to Doctor) “You’ll find out, Doctor.” (to Henry) “MacDonald! Carry out my orders!”

HENRY
(to guards) “You lot! Take the Doctor to the main hall! Hugo and Ches will be waiting there!”

With that, the Doctor gets taken away by the guards up the stairs. He’s escorted out of the cellar with Henry and Salvador behind him.
