8. Chieftain’s Caves

SCENE #76 – INT – TARTAN PASSAGE, CAWDOR CASTLE – DAY, EVENING
That same evening at Cawdor Castle, Billy comes downstairs before he enters the tartan passage corridor. He treads carefully as he looks for where he and Cari found the secret passageway earlier that afternoon.

BILLY
(to himself) “Now. It was here somewhere.”

Billy is about half-way down the corridor before he comes to a part of the wall he recognises.

BILLY
(realises) “Ah! This must be it!”

Billy heads towards the wall and presses against it to try and open the passage. Part of the wall then clicks open and he starts to open it.

CARI
(astonished) “Billy? What are you doing here?”

Billy jumps out of his skin as he turns round to find Cari standing there behind him.

BILLY
(startled) “Cari! Oh you didn’t half give me a fright!”

CARI
“I thought you and I were going to join Mr. and Mrs. Mackintosh for dinner!”

BILLY
“Was I? I mean, were we?” (Pause) “Yes, of course! Err…I wanted to explore a bit more of this castle before dinner starts!”

CARI
“But it’s about to start in ten minutes time, Billy!”

BILLY
“Oh! Is it?”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
“I can explain…”

CARI
“You were about to go into that wall, weren’t you? To find out what’s inside.”

BILLY
“No I wasn’t!”

CARI
(sternly) “Billy?!”

BILLY
(coolly) “Why not? After all, that’s what we both want to do isn’t it? Otherwise, why would you be here?”

CARI
“Billy! I think you presume too much.”

BILLY
“You don’t look like you’re ready for dinner either! You look…more like…ready to go out on some expedition on the Scottish moors!”

Another moment of silence.

CARI
“I told their butler I wasn’t feeling very well and that I’d be excused from dinner. Thought that would make the Mackintoshes less suspicious.”

BILLY
“Did you?” (Pause) “So did I!”

CARI
“Oh.” (Pause) “Well, anyway we’re here now! Why don’t we both go together? We’d best go quickly!”

BILLY
“We can’t be certain what’s in there, Cari. For all we know, it could lead us to a dead end! Or something dangerous!”

Billy and Cari then become quiet as they hear footsteps approaching.

CARI
(realises) “Listen! Someone’s coming!”

BILLY
(urgently) “Quick! Behind those curtains again!”

CARI
“What?! Not again!”

Billy and Cari make a run for it as they hide behind the curtains in the corridor once more.

BILLY
(in pain) “Oww! That’s my foot you stepped on!”

CARI
(apologetically) “Sorry, Billy!”

The footsteps come closer.

BILLY
(quietly) “Now! Don’t make a noise, whatever you do!”

CARI
(quietly) “I know, I know!”

Billy and Cari become silent as the person approaching comes around the corner and enters the tartan passage corridor. The person happens to be Iona. She approaches the wall and presses hard against it to open the panel inside it.

CARI
(quietly; realises) “It’s that girl again! Iona!”

BILLY
(quietly) “Why am I not surprised?”

CARI
(quietly) “Look! She’s going into that wall! She’s entering the secret passageway again!”

Billy and Cari watch as Iona looks around to see if anyone’s nearby. Iona eventually makes her way into the dark tunnel within the wall. She disappears as she closes the panel wall behind her once she’s in. After a few moments, Billy and Cari come out of hiding from behind the curtains. They return to where they’ve seen Iona go through the panel in the wall.

BILLY
“Did you see the way she looked around before she went in? Like she didn’t want anyone else to know she was going in.”

CARI
“Yes! I wonder why she should be so mysterious.”

BILLY
“Hmm. We’d better follow her in, I suppose.”

CARI
“Did you bring your torch with you?”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “Of course!”

Billy then takes out his pocket torch from his pocket to show Cari.

BILLY
“Didn’t think I wouldn’t bring it with me, hey?” (Pause) “Help me with opening this panel!”

CARI
“Just wanted to be sure.”

Billy and Cari then approach the wall. They open the panel in the wall to gain entry into the dark passageway within.

BILLY
“Now! We can get in!”

LUCY
(calls; from a distance) “Iona? Iona, girl?! Where are you?”

Billy and Cari turn round to hear Lucy Mackintosh approaching from a distance around the corner.

CARI
(gasps) “Someone’s coming! It’s Mrs. Mackintosh!”

BILLY
(urgently) “Quick! Get inside!”

With that, Cari makes her way inside the passageway. She minds her step as she treads carefully getting in.

BILLY
(anxiously; impatiently) “Come on! Hurry up!”

CARI
“Alright, alright! I’m going in!”

Cari gets inside the passageway and Billy follows her in. Billy closes the panel in the wall once he’s, just as Lucy Mackintosh turns around the corner, strolling into the tartan passage corridor. Lucy sees no one in sight whilst in the corridor.

LUCY
(calls) “Iona? Iona, where are you?!”

No response as the corridor is empty for Lucy.

LUCY
“Hmm. Nobody down here.” (sighs) “Where has that girl got to?”

Eventually, Lucy leaves the tartan passage corridor.

LUCY
(calls) “Iona?! Iona?!”

SCENE #77 – INT – DARK PASSAGEWAY, CAWDOR CASTLE – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile with Billy and Cari, they find themselves in the dark passageway. They climb down some steps and enter into what seem to be cave dwellings. Billy switches on his torch as they go deeper into the dark.

CARI
“How long will that torch of yours last, Billy?”

BILLY
“About six hours. I added a new battery just before we came down in here.”

CARI
“We’d better not use that torch much then. We don’t know how long we will be down here!”

BILLY
“Good point.” (Pause) “I wonder where that Iona’s gone to.”

CARI
“She must know this passageway like the back of her hand!”

BILLY
“Yes. Why would she come down here anyway? It’s not an ideal place to have fun, is it?”

CARI
“Mrs. Mackintosh said something about her seeing the MacDonald boy. Perhaps Iona’s having an affair with Jeremy MacDonald, son and heir to the throne of the Clan MacDonald, and their parents aren’t supposed to know about it!”

BILLY
“Yes! That may well be it!” (Pause) “Whoever built this passageway must have been good in his handy work. We must be deep underground!” (Pause) “Have Mr. MacDonald and his family got secret passageways like this one under their castle?”

CARI
“Not that I know of.”

BILLY
“What they haven’t told you?”

CARI
“No! They didn’t seem interested when I asked!”

Moment of silence. Billy then takes out his camera. He snaps away, taking pictures as he and Cari move on.

CARI
“What are you doing?”

BILLY
“I brought my camera with me, by the way.”

CARI
“I don’t think you’ll get many pictures down here in the dark. Not even with your torch switched on!”

BILLY
“It’s to help us to get back to where we left the castle. To find our way back to where we started. If we have pictures taken of our journey, we might be able to get out of this place rather easily. Hopefully.”

CARI
“Have you done this before then?”

BILLY
“Yes! I used my camera to help me and Nyssa find our way back down some cave dwellings in a place called Thursdan! It was very effective at the time!”

CARI
(gradually) “Very well! I’ll take your word for it!”

They continue through the passageway as Billy snaps away with his camera, taking pictures. As Billy takes another shot with his camera, a ferocious roar echoes deep within. Billy and Car become quite disturbed once they hear the roar.

CARI
(disturbed) “There’s something horrible about. That sounded like a roar!”

BILLY
(apprehensively) “We probably imagined it! Don’t worry!”

But the roar echoes again and and this time it’s angrier and wilder.

CARI
(disturbed) “Imagined it, did we?”

BILLY
(apprehensively) “It can’t be Iona. It didn’t sound like a girl screaming!.It sounded more like…a wild animal.!” (Pause) “Unless…”

CARI
“Unless what?”

BILLY
(dismissively; nervously) “No. Sorry. Silly thought in my head.”

Moment of silence.

CARI
“It’s become quiet now. The roaring’s stopped!”

BILLY
(apprehensively) “Are you sure you want to go on? If we come to meet up with…whatever that thing is…we may not see daylight again!”

CARI
(thinks; gradually) “Iona’s still in here! She may get hurt!”

BILLY
(nervously) “Yes. Yes, you’re right! We can’t let that happen!” (Pause) “Let’s go straight on then, shall we?”

Billy and Cari then move on as they head off deeper into the dark passageway.

CARI
“This place seems to go on forever and ever!”

BILLY
“Please don’t say things like that!” (Pause) “I wonder how Nyssa’s getting on. She’s probably having fun!”

SCENE #78 – INT – BALLROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, at Eilean Donan Castle, Nyssa dances with Jeremy MacDonald in the ballroom. They’ve been dancing for quite a while. They chat whilst they dance.

JEREMY
“You dance very well, lass! You certainly have picked up the Scottish country dancing quickly!”

NYSSA
“Thank you, Jeremy! I’ve had a lot of practice.”

JEREMY
“I imagine this Billy friend of yours has kept you up with dancing.”

NYSSA
“Yes! He enjoys dancing with me whenever we can! He enjoys dancing to the tunes of the Charleston and the Foxtrot from the nineteen twenties and thirties!”

JEREMY
“What?! That Sassenach rubbish?”

NYSSA
“I actually rather like it!”

JEREMY
“Oh. Do you? I was merely expressing an opinion! No offence intended, you understand.”

NYSSA
“None taken.”

Nyssa and Jeremy continue dancing quietly for a moment.

NYSSA
“How long have you and your fiancée Iona been together for, Jeremy?”

JEREMY
“Five years! We’ve had to keep it a secret for a long time!”

NYSSA
“It’s a shame she couldn’t be here tonight.”

JEREMY
“Yes. I must apologise for her behaviour earlier. I don’t know what’s got into that poor wee girl’s head.”

NYSSA
“I’m sure it’s just a matter of getting to know her before judging her. I’m sure there’s a rational explanation for her behaviour.”

JEREMY
“That’s as maybe! But my father has ruled to keep the petty feud between the MacDonald clan and the Mackintosh clan going for a long time! It’s certainly been a rocky relationship for me and Iona. Rocky as the waves that crashed on the shores!”

NYSSA
“Yes. It must be really difficult for you two to see each other. With matters regarding the civil war.”

JEREMY
“Aye that’s it, lass.”

Nyssa and Jeremy quietly dance again for a moment.

JEREMY
(changes subject) “Tell me about your man Billy! Have you known him long?”

NYSSA
“Yes! Billy’s been travelling with me and the Doctor in the TARDIS for some time now. He and I…have grown fond of each other. We’ve…become a couple recently.”

JEREMY
“A couple?! Really?! How recent is that then?”

NYSSA
“A day.”

JEREMY
“A day! So you’ve started then?! Well, congratulations!”

NYSSA
“Thank you.”

JEREMY
“And…I presume the Doctor knows about you two being together?”

NYSSA
(apprehensively; gradually) “No. He doesn’t.”

JEREMY
“Hey? You haven’t told him?!”

NYSSA
“No. We agreed to keep it a secret, Billy and I. Just for the time being.”

JEREMY
“I see.”

Nyssa and Jeremy quietly dance again for another moment.

NYSSA
(puzzled) “You seem disconcerted by what I said, Jeremy.”

JEREMY
(gradually) “Well, it’s just a matter of opinion. I was just thinking that it seems rather odd…you not telling the Doctor about you and your man. Like, you’re trying to hide your relationship with Billy from the Doctor. Because you wish to avoid upsetting him. Just like I hide my engagement to Iona from my parents.”

NYSSA
“My relationship with the Doctor is fine, Jeremy! I assure you!”

JEREMY
“Aye?!” (Pause) “Please don’t mind me, Nyssa. It’s my way. I express my opinion openly before considering other people’s motives. I hope you understand.”

NYSSA
“Yes! I do understand. And I appreciate your opinion.”

JEREMY
“Then would you mind if I gave you some advice, Miss Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“If you think it would be helpful, then I’ll listen to your advice.”

JEREMY
(gradually) “Okay.” (Pause) “Then, my dear Miss Nyssa. Don’t keep what you have with Billy hidden from the Doctor! It could strain the relationship with your man as much my relationship with Iona is strained. If you have concerns about telling the Doctor, then let it be known to him. He’s more likely to accept you and Billy more than my father can accept me and Iona. Don’t let your happiness be ruined by the secret you keep.”

NYSSA
(thoughtfully) “Right.” (Pause) “Thank you, Jeremy. I shall bear your advice in mind.”

JEREMY
(gradually) “Sorry if I’m not good at making sermons like our local reverend can. He’d know about these things of the heart better than I do.”

NYSSA
“Like I said, Jeremy. I understand.”

Nyssa and Jeremy keep on dancing until the Scottish music stops. The dance comes to an end. The dancers applaud the pipers and the musicians once they’ve finished.

JEREMY
“Well…like I said. A very good dancer you are, Nyssa!”

NYSSA
“Thank you! So are you!”

The applause by the dancers eventually dies down as the next part of the evening begins.

JEREMY
“Now! Have you seen a Scotsman dance with a sword, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(startled) “I beg your pardon?”

Scottish bagpipe music gets played as a particular dance commences with a Scottish Highlander laying a sword onto the ballroom floor.

SCENE #79 – INT – DRAWING ROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – DAY, EVENING
In the drawing room of Eilean Donan Castle, Henry, Hugo and Ches discuss matters regarding Scottish tradition. They drink glasses of malt whilst they sit in their comfy chairs and let out contented sighs.

HENRY
“Now, Roid! You’ve experienced most of our Scottish traditions such as grouse shooting; the Glorious Twelfth of August; visiting Knockacolly and witnessing Scots fighting against the English! We shall now get you to experience what it’s like to fish on a river!”

CHES
(delighted) “Oh, Henry! That should be well-worth doing! Fishing! If only Cari was here to hear about this!”

HENRY
(continues) “Then we shall get you onto some proper deer stalking! You may have seen one, but you haven’t seen them all!”

There is then a knock on the door as the Doctor enters.

DOCTOR
(cheerily) “Hello!”

HENRY
(grumbles) “Oh. It’s you.”

DOCTOR
(cheerily) “Ah! There you are, gentlemen! Mind if I join you?”

HENRY
(grumbles) “If you must.”

The Doctor closes the door behind him as he goes over to sit with Henry, Hugo and Ches in the room.

HENRY
(grumbles) “Have a glass of whisky. If you care.”

DOCTOR
“I told you before! I don’t drink the stuff! Very kind of you, but no.”

HENRY
(grumbles) “Just as well. It’ll be a sad waste to drink it.”

Moment of silence.

HUGO
“We still haven’t managed to sort out that property in Knockacolly.”

HENRY
(grumbles) “Yes. Don’t I remember?!”

HUGO
“We will have to arrange another appointment for good Roid here to see the estate properly.”

CHES
“But not until Cari gets back, please. I may have seen it, but I should prefer it if she saw it too.”

HUGO
“And especially after the battle…” (stops; realises) “Oops!”

HENRY
(bitterly) “You fool, Hugo!”

DOCTOR
(inquisitively) “What battle may that be, gentlemen?”

HENRY
(angrily; to Hugo) “You see what you’ve done now, Hugo! Can’t you keep your trap shut?! You’ve let a stranger in on our secret!”

CHES
(puzzled) “What secret? What battle?”

DOCTOR
(seriously) “I hope no blood will be spilled on any battlefield again, Mr. MacDonald. Because if there is, there’s a good reason for it to make me angry.”

HENRY
(bitterly) “Hugo; Roid! Leave us!”

CHES
(protests) “But I haven’t finished my glass…”

HENRY
(bitterly) “Take it with you then! Leave us this instant! Me and the Doctor!”

Another moment of silence.

HUGO
“Come on, Roid. Let’s go and see how the dancers are in the ballroom.”

CHES
(put-off) “Yes, Kilwhillie.”

With that, Hugo takes Ches away. They leave the drawing room quite disturbed, as they open and close the door behind them. Once they’ve gone, it’s just the Doctor with Henry in the room. Moment of silence ensues.

DOCTOR
“Getting all fidgety and up-tight are we, Henry? Those are the signs of madness, you know.”

Another moment of silence.

HENRY
(bitterly) “You seem to make a habit of poking your nose into other people’s business don’t you, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
“Yes. I do rather, don’t I. Most irritating, isn’t it?!”

HENRY
“I won’t stand for it, do you hear?! I won’t stand anymore of your meddling any longer!”

DOCTOR
“Won’t you indeed?” (Pause) “Just what are you planning on doing, Mr. MacDonald? What’s this battle you have in mind?”

HENRY
(gradually) “It won’t make any difference if I told you.” (Pause) “This battle is a battle to end all battles! To finish our feud between the clans of MacDonald…and Mackintosh!”

DOCTOR
“Recreate World War One again, hey? Or World War Two? Very risky!”

HENRY
“Don’t mock me, Doctor!” (Pause) “The battle…that defines who is the rightful chieftain of Scotland! The chieftain…over his own property!”

DOCTOR
“Property, I see.” (Pause) “What property is that?”

Another moment of silence.

HENRY
“Chieftain’s Caves!”

DOCTOR
(puzzled) “Chieftain’s Caves?”

SCENE #80 – INT – WEST SECTION, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
It is now night-time. With Billy and Cari, they have been walking for some time as they’ve now left the dark passageway of Cawdor Castle and are now in some dark caves. They walk further on as they use Billy’s torch to find their way.

CARI
“How long have we been in these caves, Billy?”

BILLY
“I’m not sure. Two hours maybe?”

CARI
(shocked) “Two hours?! That must mean it’s nine o’clock!”

BILLY
“Wait a minute. Let me check my watch.”

Billy then raises his arm and shines his pocket torch on his wrist to check the time on his watch.

BILLY
“Yep! You’re right! It is nine o’clock! Dinner with the Mackintoshes must have started at seven when we left.”

CARI
“I never thought we were going to be down here this long! I know I said these caves make a nice change from the dark passageway we were in, but they really do go on and on!”

BILLY
“I hope Mr. and Mrs. Mackintosh won’t be thinking we’ve escaped. After all, that’s what we are doing isn’t it? Trying to get back to your castle.”

CARI
“It’s not my castle, Billy! And yes you’re right! They’ll think we’d be trying to get back to the enemy from their perspective.”

BILLY
“I wish I could have my camera to get us back somehow!”

CARI
“That didn’t work, remember? We kept getting lost!”

BILLY
“Yes, sorry about that. I’m sure it would work like the last time!”

CARI
“There’s too much of these caves to wonder how far we’ve come! We may be going around in circles! And we haven’t found Iona yet!”

Just then, a loud ferocious roar echoes in the caves. This unsettles Billy and Cari.

CARI
(terrified; continues) “Or where or what is that creature!”

BILLY
“These caves aren’t the place I’d like to find the Doctor or Nyssa in! It’s so claustrophobic in here!”

CARI
(gradually; delighted) “Hey! Look over there!”

BILLY
“What?”

CARI
(delighted) “Light! A bright light over there around the corner! It must be daylight!”

BILLY
“It’s nine o’clock in the evening! It wouldn’t be daylight, Cari!” (Pause) “Perhaps we’d better go and investigate.”

With that, Billy and Cari walk forwards to reach the light ahead of them. As they come around the corner, they find themselves walking into another part of the caves.

BILLY
(slightly annoyed) “Oh no! Another set of caves!”

CARI
“Oh shame! I was hoping we’d find a way out!” (Pause) “But what about that light source?”

Billy and Cari then go over to see what the light source is.

BILLY
(startled) “It’s a lamp! An oil lamp!”

CARI
“What’s a lamp like that doing here in these caves?”

BILLY
“Perhaps we should ask who else is down here?!”

CARI
“Iona?”

BILLY
“She didn’t carry a lamp! No! It must be someone else!”

Billy and Cari are then startled as the two men Buchanan and Macmillan come around the corner and threaten them with knives.

BUCHANAN
(threateningly) “Stay where you are, you two!”

MACMILLAN
(threateningly) “Or we’ll have stabbed you on the spot!”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “It’s alright! It’s alright! We’re not here to cause trouble!”

Moment of silence as Buchanan and Macmillan realise who Billy and Cari are.

MACMILLAN
(startled; amazed) “Why, James! If it isn’t our two friends! Mr. Walker and Mrs. Roid!”

BUCHANAN
(amazed) “So it is, Alan! Well, this is a pleasant surprise!”

CARI
(amazed) “Billy! It’s those two men we met on the moors yesterday when I first found you! Mr. Macmillan and Mr. Buchanan!”

Joy and confusion ensues as Buchanan and Macmillan put their knives away to reunite with Billy and Cari.

SCENE #81 – INT – DRAWING ROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
Back at Eilean Donan Castle, the Doctor is still with Henry in the drawing room. Just then, Henry contorts and writhes in pain.

HENRY
(writhes; in pain) “Ah! Ooh, my head!”

DOCTOR
(concerned) “Mr. MacDonald? Are you alright?”

HENRY
(writhes; in pain) “My head!” (cries out loud) “What is it?! What do you want?! Can’t you see I’m busy?!”

DOCTOR
(concerned) “Mr. MacDonald? Henry? What’s the matter?!”

Whilst the Doctor becomes concerned, Henry gets caught in a trance as he hears Salvador talking to him.

SALVADOR (V’O)
“Focus, Henry MacDonald! Focus! You must hear me! Your caves are being invaded! Focus!”

HENRY
(entranced) “Invaded? By whom? The Mackintoshes?”

SALVADOR (V’O)
“No! Four people are in the caves at this very moment! The intruders are in the heart of the complex!”

DOCTOR
(cries; concerned) “Henry? What did you just say? Who’s invaded where? Is it the Chieftain’s Caves?”

SALVADOR (V’O)
(to Henry) “You must listen to what I say, Chief MacDonald! My servant will deal with the intruders! But you must do something for me!”

HENRY
(entranced) “What is it I must do?!”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(cries; concerned) “Henry? Henry, what’s wrong?!”

The Doctor manages to snap Henry out of his trance. Henry gradually turns his attention to the Doctor.

HENRY
(gradually; disorientated) “You…you were saying…Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(concerned) “You seemed to be in a trance, Mr. MacDonald! You were saying things randomly! What happened?” (realises) “Someone spoke to you, didn’t they? Was it by any chance…?”

HENRY
(abruptly) “You’re under arrest, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“What?!”

HENRY
“Both you…and your friend Miss Nyssa are under house arrest! You are considered enemies of Scotland!”

DOCTOR
(protests) “We haven’t done anything! What’s got into you, MacDonald?!”

HENRY
(calls) “Toker?! Toker?! Where is Toker?!”

DOCTOR
(protests) “Mr. MacDonald?!”

Moment of tense silence ensues.

HENRY
(gradually) “You’re right, Doctor! There are intruders in the Chieftain’s Caves! My Chieftain’s Caves! And I’m not going to lose my chances of success on that! Not from you or anyone else for that matter!”

At that moment, the door opens and Toker enters the room.

HENRY
(pleased) “Ah! Toker, my man!”

TOKER
“You called, sir?”

SCENE #82 – INT – BALLROOM, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – DAY, EVENING
In the ballroom of Eilean Donan Castle, Nyssa and Jeremy have just seen the Scottish Highlander do his sword dance with the other guests.

JEREMY
(impressed) “Aye! That was definitely spectacular!” (to Nyssa) “Wouldn’t you say so, Miss Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(impressed) “Oh yes! Very impressive! That man handled the sword dance with careful precision and accuracy! It was a complicated arrangement.”

JEREMY
“Aye! You’ve got to be trained to learn such dances as that! Well, for a Scotsman that is. And that Highlander…Jimmy, his name is…has trained most of his life to perfect that sword dance!”

NYSSA
“You’d be surprised how Traken dances work. I showed Billy how to dance one of the Traken dances! He still hasn’t got it right!”

JEREMY
(baffled) “Aye! Right!” (Pause) “Well, how about I get you to dance with one of the other lads, Miss Nyssa! I’m sure that they deserve a bonny lass like you to [dance with…”]

They’re then interrupted as a commotion ensues. Henry enters with some castle guards behind him.

HENRY
(bellows) “Where is she?! Where is that girl who was with the Doctor?! Miss Nyssa?!”

Everyone mutters confused and bewildered as the castle guards draw their swords out from their sheaths.

HENRY
(cries) “There she is! That’s her! That’s her! That’s the little girl there with my son!”

NYSSA
(protests) “Who are you calling ‘little’, Mr. MacDonald?”

HENRY
(barks) “Guards, seize her!”

The castle guards march forward as they grab Nyssa by the arms. Nyssa struggles on they grab onto her.

NYSSA
(struggles; protests) “Let me go! You’re hurting my arms!”

JEREMY
(protests) “Father! What is the meaning of this?! Why is Nyssa being taken into custody?!”

HENRY
“She’s an enemy of the MacDonalds! She’s come here to ruin our clan and traditions!”

JEREMY
“Snobbish rubbish, father! Nyssa hasn’t done anything to harm us! Let her go at once!”

HENRY
“You mind your own business, boy! Politics of Scottish traditions are things you don’t understand!”

NYSSA
(pleadingly) “Please Mr. MacDonald! Tell me what it is I’m supposed to have done wrong! Why have I earned your disrespect?”

HENRY
“You are an accomplice with this man! That’s all the evidence I need to know!”

NYSSA
(puzzled) “Accomplice?! Evidence?!”

The castle guards then bring forth the Doctor out from the crowd. The Doctor soon comes face-to-face with Nyssa.

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “Hello there, Nyssa. Sorry about all of this.”

NYSSA
(relieved) “Doctor, I’m so glad you’re alright. What’s being going on?!”

DOCTOR
“To be honest Nyssa…I’m not entirely sure. Mr. MacDonald’s definitely an unpredictable sort of man!”

The Doctor and Nyssa are now held prisoner, whilst Jeremy and the other guests are astonished by what’s happened.

SCENE #83 – INT – WEST SECTION, CHIEFTAIN’S CAVES – NIGHT
Meanwhile, back in the caves, Billy, Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan continue with their reunion.

CARI
(enthused) “I’m so pleased we found you two! I thought we’d never meet anyone down here!”

BUCHANAN
“Aye, we thought the same thing when we first came in here!” (Pause) “So you both came from Cawdor Castle! The residence of the Mackintoshes!”

BILLY
“We came via a secret passageway in the tartan passage corridor of the castle. We thought it might lead to somewhere. We couldn’t be more right!”

MACMILLAN
“Aye! You’ve got to be careful where you tread, laddie! These caves are dangerous! If you went in here completely in the dark, you’d find yourself falling down a pothole and never returning!”

CARI
“It’s a good thing we had the torch!”

BILLY
(to Macmillan; Buchanan) “Can you both get us out of here? Are we close to the exit?”

BUCHANAN
“We wish we were! We’ve been stuck in these caves for a long time! No knowing where we are and how to get out!”

CARI
(wryly) “Marvellous!”

MACMILLAN
“We’ve been going around and around in circles, lass! It seems as if we maybe stuck in these caves for days! Even weeks!”

CARI
“Weeks?! I can’t stay in these caves for weeks!”

BILLY
(to Cari) “Don’t worry, Cari. We’ll find a way out!” (to Macmillan; Buchanan) “What are these caves anyway? What’s so special about them?!”

BUCHANAN
“These caves hold the source of MacDonald’s power, lad! These are the caves where Henry MacDonald is able to do all of his fancy tricks and summon soldiers from the past to fight his bloody battles for him!”

BILLY
(surprised) “MacDonald’s power? Are we close to it then?”

MACMILLAN
“It’s hard to tell, lad. When you don’t know your own sense of direction.”

Suddenly a loud roar echoes. This unsettles Billy, Cari, Macmillan and Buchanan whilst they’re in the caves.

CARI
(stammers) “W-W-What was that?! We’ve heard that roar before! It’s scaring the living daylights out of me!”

BILLY
“I suppose there’s some wild animal living down here!”

MACMILLAN
(wearily) “Och it’s far worse than that I’m afraid, lad.”

BILLY
“Worse? In what way?”

BUCHANAN
“That is the sound of a creature from the darkest of Scottish myths and legends! A creature far more terrifying than anybody who has walked this earth!”

The roar echoes again. Cari then shrieks in terror as she then see a horrific monster appear before them. It is a female ogress.

CARI
(shrieks) “What is that?! What is that thing?!”

BILLY
“It’s huge! He must be ten feet tall!”

MACMILLAN
She is ten feet tall!”

BILLY
“She?!”

BUCHANAN
“That…is the creature that lived in MacKinnon’s Cave on the Island of Mull in Balmaneach! A wild and lonely place, you must know! A creature that now terrorises in these caves! The monster! The ogress!”

Cari screams again as the mighty ogress approaches them, growling and roaring.

SCENE #84 – INT – MAIN HALL, EILEAN DONAN CASTLE – NIGHT
Back in the main hall of Eilean Donan Castle, the Doctor and Nyssa are being held prisoner by the castle guards led by Stevie. They stand before Henry MacDonald with Hugo, Ches and Jeremy beside them. Maggie then enters and gets surprised by what she sees before her.

MAGGIE
(surprised; to Henry) “Henry, dear?! What’s going on?! Why are these two being held by the castle guards?!”

HENRY
(reassuringly; to Maggie) “Don’t worry, my heart’s desire! All will be revealed!”

JEREMY
(protests) “Father, you can’t do this!”

Toker then enters.

TOKER
“Excuse me, sir.”

HENRY
“Ah, Toker! Have all the guests been dealt with?”

TOKER
“Yes, sir. They’ve all been told to go home. The cars have gone. Except ours, of course!”

MAGGIE
(shocked; to Henry) “You sent all the guests home, Henry?! Why?!”

HENRY
(consolingly; to Maggie) “Not now, Maggie dear.” (to Stevie) “Stevie! Keep a good eye on our captured criminals! Watch them like a hawk! Like a hawk, you understand?!”

STEVIE
“Aye, my laird! That I will that!”

HUGO
“I’m rather intrigued by what you have in store for us, Henry old man!”

CHES
(excitedly) “Yeah! This is all very exciting, isn’t it?! Cari should be here to see this!”

NYSSA
(pleadingly) “Please, Mr. MacDonald! We still don’t understand why we’re being held prisoner like this! We haven’t done anything wrong!”

DOCTOR
(bewildered) “What is it you’re trying to prove, Mr. MacDonald?! That we’re your enemy?! We haven’t spoiled your traditions or caused affliction against you and your family! Not that I can think of at any rate. We haven’t done anything to harm you!”

SALVADOR
(menacingly) “Not to them perhaps! But certainly to me, Doctor!”

At that moment, Nyssa and the Doctor become startled as they turn to see Salvador before them. Salvador comes down the stairs to meet them.

DOCTOR
(realises) “Ah! There you are! I was wondering when you’d show up!”

SALVADOR
(to Henry) “You have done well, Henry! I congratulate you on carrying out the task successfully! You are a good and faithful servant!”

HENRY
“Always try to please, my lord.”

NYSSA
(intrigued) “Doctor? You know this man, don’t you!”

DOCTOR
“I’m afraid I do, Nyssa. He’s a part of my past I’d rather like to forget!”

SALVADOR
Like or prefer to forget, Doctor? Which is it? Take your pick!”

DOCTOR
(solemnly) “Nyssa, meet Salvador! Salvador, meet Nyssa!” (to Salvador) “I take it you’re responsible for setting all of this up hey, Salvador?”

SALVADOR
(mockingly; triumphantly) “You have fallen into my trap, Doctor! And now you and your friend have been caught! I am the ruler of this world! Welcome to my Scotland, Doctor!”

In an instant, a hologram gets activated in the room. Nyssa and the Doctor are quite startled once they see the hologram appear before them.

NYSSA
“Doctor, he’s activated a holographic image! He’s showing us a planet-like structure!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Yes! Recognise it, Nyssa?”

It takes a short while before Nyssa registers and recognises the holographic image she sees before her.

NYSSA
(realises; shocked) “Doctor! It’s exactly like the Scotland map that Jeremy showed to us in that book of his! The one where Scotland looked all out-of-place and the geography seemed inaccurate and incorrect!”

DOCTOR
“It seems I was wrong, Nyssa! That map that Jeremy showed us in his book was the correct map after all! The correct map for Scotland!”

NYSSA
“So…Scotland is…”

DOCTOR
(finishes) “Yes, Nyssa! Scotland is a planet!” (Pause) “We’re on the planet Scotland!”
