12. The Mud Man Makes A Deal

SCENE #102 – INT – RONZADOR’S TEMPLE – DATE: 4198 – DAY, AFTERNOON
It is now the afternoon. In the courtyard of Ronzador’s Temple, Jason has managed to unlock all the chests, save one, with his sword Quasarin.

JASON
“That’s almost all of the chests unlocked! Let’s hope this last one contains the Great Seal!”

DOROMIR
“Well if doesn’t then that’s the end of the quest, Jason! We’ll all be done for!”

With that, Jason sets to work by placing his sword over the last chest to break the lock. After a few minutes, the lock breaks and the chest opens. Once it’s opened, Jason puts his sword back in his sheath by his side. He then approaches the chest to look inside, before taking something out from it. Jason holds it up and stares, fascinated by the object.

DYNDA
“Is that it? The Great Seal?”

JASON
“Yes! It must be it! It’s got to be! Otherwise why would all the other chests be empty?!”

DOROMIR
“Then we can carry on with our quest!” (to Doctor) “At least we won’t need you, Doctor! Now we have the great seal, we know how to use it to get to Ungol!”

DOCTOR
(thoughtfully) “Strange, isn’t it?”

DYNDA
“What’s strange, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(thoughtfully) “This! All of this! The quest; the seal; the temple; the great river; the dark tower and the Edolas computer! The way Jason was able to unlock the chest with the great seal using the sword!”

JASON
“What’s wrong with that, Doctor? It was what we were told to do, wasn’t it?”

DOCTOR
“Yes! And yet we managed to do it so easily without any trouble or booby-trap!”

DOROMIR
“What are you getting at, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I’m just saying…that all of this revolving around the quest…seems to be just a little too perfect.”

As the Doctor becomes thoughtful, they’re interrupted as howling savages enter the temple courtyard.

JASON
“Savages!”

DOROMIR
“Ambush as I suspected!” (to Doctor) “Not so perfect now is it, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Come on! Run!”

DYNDA
“Where to?”

DOCTOR
“Through that door-way! Down those stairs! It’ll take us out of the courtyard! It must lead to the rear end of the temple and to the exit!”

DOROMIR
(sceptically) “How can you be so sure…?”

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Run I say! Run!”

The Doctor, Captain Doromir, Dynda and Jason run for it towards the exit of the temple courtyard. They go through the archway down the stairs, whilst the Gren savages led by Ja-Ara and Jor-Eliv approach.

JA-ARA
(yells) “STOP THEM! STOP THEM AT ONCE BEFORE THEY ESCAPE!”

JOR-ELIV
“Shouldn’t your pirate friend be able to hold them before we can get our hands on their filthy butts?”

JA-ARA
(yells) “I do not trust that scoundrel with my life, husband! AFTER THEM! AFTER THEM!”

The Gren savages howl, as they chase after the Doctor, Doromir, Dynda and Jason.

SCENE #103 – INT – RONZADOR’S TEMPLE – DATE: 4198 – DAY, AFTERNOON
The Doctor, Dynda, Doromir and Jason come down the stairs, as they enter through a doorway and manage to get to the rear side of Ronzador’s Temple.

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Everyone! Through here!”

They stop in their tracks, once they’re on the other side.

DYNDA
“Where to now?”

DOCTOR
(thinks) “Right, I think! It must be where the exit is!”

DOROMIR
“What’s the point?! Those savages will be onto us once we get out into the open air! We won’t have a chance to escape from them!”

They look behind to see hordes of savages coming for them down the stairs.

JA-ARA
(yells) “WE’VE GOT THEM, JOR! WE’VE GOT THEM NOW!”

But Ja-Ara’s cheer of triumph soon turns into a howl of rage, as the doors to the temple courtyard close on them. The Doctor and his company are safe. The Gren savages howl and pound hard on the doors from the other side, whilst the Doctor and the others become astonished at what’s just happened.

DOROMIR
(baffled) “Those doors! The doors shut by themselves!”

DYNDA
“How?! How did they close by themselves?

DOROMIR
“Those savages were coming down those stairs! Those doors cut us off from them whilst we were still here! We’re safe!”

DYNDA
“But it’s not possible! Doors can’t shut by themselves?!”

DOCTOR
“Jason? Did you…?”

JASON
“Don’t look at me, Doctor! I didn’t do anything! I didn’t shut those doors!”

LO-JO
(interjects) “No! I did!”

The Doctor and the others turn round to see Lo-Jo standing before them.

JASON
“Lo-Jo! It’s you!”

LO-JO
“Yes, Jason lad! So good to see you again! Last time you and your friends ran out on us! But not again!” (calls) “Hold them!”

The Doctor, Doromir, Dynda and Jason get held roughly by Morg and Pike, as they come up from behind them. The Doctor and friends struggle, as they’re unable to break free from Morg and Pike’s grip.

DYNDA
“Get off me! Unhand me, you crooks!”

DOROMIR
“This is still mutiny, Mr. Sil! You shall all pay for it!”

MORG
“Shut your trap, Doromir!”

PIKE
“Yeah! Shut your trap!”

Orio the Parrot squawks, as he’s perched on Lo-Jo’s shoulder.

ORIO THE PARROT
(squawks) “Shut your trap! Shut your trap!” (squawks)

Lo-Jo then drags Deletos with him.

LO-JO
(gleefully) “I have an old friend of yours that I think you’ve missed, dear Captain!”

Lo-Jo brings the Deletos forward for Doromir to see him.

DOROMIR
(pleased) “Mr. Deletos! You’re still alive!”

DELETOS
(relieved) “Captain Doromir! Thank goodness you and the others are alright! I’m only sorry to say that it had to come to this with us being hostages of these crooks!”

LO-JO
“Shut up and join your party, Deletos!”

Lo-Jo pushes Deletos to the others. Deletos stumbles forward as he bumps into Doromir.

DELETOS
“Sorry, Captain.”

Doromir dismisses Deletos, as he and the others stare at Lo-Jo who gloats at them.

DOCTOR
“You know this is all unnecessary! Capturing us won’t get you anywhere, Lo-Jo Sil!”

LO-JO
“Oh I think it will you know, Doctor. For one thing, those savages want to see you dead. Through a temporary alliance me and my lads made with them, we’ve given them the slip that we’ll capture you for them!” (Pause) “Fortunately, I am merciful!”

DOROMIR
(unconvinced) “Is that so, Mr. Sil?”

LO-JO
“Aye that it is, Captain! Whilst those savages think I’m going to take you to them, I’m going to turn my back on them and help you all to escape!”

MORG
“Stupid primitives!”

PIKE
“Yeah! They don’t know what will hit them!”

The Gren savages continue to pound on the temple doors from the other side, very ferociously.

JA-ARA
(shouts) “LO-JO! YOU BACKSTABBING PIG! YOU WILL SUFFER! DO YOU HEAR ME?! YOU’LL SUFFER!”

Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike laugh away heartily, whilst the Gren savages continue pounding on the temple doors from the other side. But the Doctor and the others are not amused.

DOCTOR
“You seem to have a habit of making friends turned enemies, Lo-Jo. Reminds me of another pirate I once read about.”

LO-JO
“You have something which me and my men need to get into that black tower. And whether you’re dead or alive, we’ll take it!”

Whilst Lo-Jo talks away, Morg and Pike search through the pockets of their captives. Eventually, Pike takes the seal of Ronzador out from Jason’s pocket.

JASON
(cries) “Hey! Give that back to me, Mr. Pike! I got it first!”

PIKE
(to Lo-Jo) “See Lo-Jo! We have the seal! The boy had it in his pocket!”

LO-JO
“Excellent!” (to Jason) “Thank you lad for collecting that seal for us!” (to Doctor) “Unlike the savages, we need you Doctor and your pretty friends to get us to the tower of Ungol! And we intend not to let you out of our sight!”

DOCTOR
(curious) “How were you and your pirates able to break into the temple, Lo-Jo? The doors were locked and the force-field was up! Jason used his sword Quasarain to do that!”

LO-JO
(smugly) “Jason’s not the only one who has a sword like that, Doctor!”

Lo-Jo eventually draws his own sword out from his sheath and shows it to the others. Everyone gasps astonished, as they see what Lo-Jo’s sword looks like. Lo-Jo laughs out loud, amused by everyone’s astonishment.

DOCTOR
“Fascinating! Really fascinating!”

Lo-Jo continues laughing out loud, whilst everyone’s bewildered.

LO-JO
“I’d be happy to explain why my sword is similar in fashion to Jason’s sword, Doctor! But now, we must move on! We’re going to go on a little journey! To Ungol!” (to Morg; Pike) “Morg; Pike! Take them with us! And keep watch on them!”

MORG
(gleefully) “Like you say, Lo-Jo!” (to Doctor; Doromir, Dynda; Deletos; Jason) “You lot! Move!

With that, the Doctor, Doromir, Dynda, Deletos and Jason are forced to move by Morg and Pike, as they follow Lo-Jo with Orio the Parrot perched on his shoulder.

LO-JO
(proudly) “Through here! To the right! That’s where the exit is out of here!”

SCENE #104 – INT – RONZADOR’S TEMPLE – DATE: 4198 – DAY, AFTERNOON
Still in Ronzador’s temple, the Gren return to the temple courtyard after coming back up the stairs. Ja-Ara is fuming as she turns on Elar-Jom with Antuss beside her.

JA-ARA
(yells; to Elar-Jom) “YOU STUPID, STUPID BRAT! YOU LET THEM ESCAPE!”

ELAR-JOM
“Me?! I didn’t do anything! It was you who trusted Lo-Jo in the first place!”

JA-ARA
(angrily) “Shut up! Don’t try to wriggle your way out of it! I still have to deal with you after this is done! You’ve betrayed me! You betrayed your own mother!”

JOR-ELIV
(interjects) “Ja! Now’s really not the time!”

JA-ARA
(yells; to Elar-Jom) “I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU, MY OWN DAUGHTER!!”

ELAR-JOM
“I’m not very fond of you either, Mum!”

JA-ARA
(to Antuss) “And you! You thought you could get away with it, didn’t you?! With your lovey-dovey ways! Didn’t you?!”

ANTUSS
(bitterly) “You still have to pay for Volum’s death, you witch! I have nothing to be ashamed of when I’m with your daughter!”

ELAR-JOM
(proudly) “Nice one, Antuss dear!”

JA-ARA
(shouts) “You mated with her! And against my will!”

JOR-ELIV
(interrupts) “Ja-Ara, my dear! We have to stop those pirates! Can’t we deal with this matter later?!”

SOR
“They must have locked the door on us! That cunning pirate with that sword! The one you negotiated with, dear queen! He must have used it!”

JA-ARA
“Of course he did, you old fool! In order for him to get the Doctor and his followers for himself!”

JOR-ELIV
“Why would he want to do that to us? What could he want them for?!”

JA-ARA
(yells) “I DON’T KNOW, OKAY! We must get out and find them on the other side of this temple! We must chase them! We mustn’t fail the great god!”

ELAR-JOM
“It’ll be a waste of time, Mum! They’re probably far away by now if they’ve got out!”

JA-ARA
(yells) “EVERYONE MOVE! ALL OF OUR WARRIORS HEAD OUT! We mustn’t fail the Mud Man again! I pray he’s managed to do well with finding those brats we tried to get rid off!”

Every Gren savage warrior follows Ja-Ara with Jor-Eliv; Elar-Jom; Antuss and Brother Sor. They head out of the courtyard to leave the temple and to get out into the open.

SCENE #105 – EXT – GORGE LAND, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, AFTERNOON
Far away from Ronzador, on route to Ungol, is a place called Gorge Land. Nyssa slowly regains consciousness and wakes up before Billy does. They soon realise that they are sitting on some stony precipice, close to the edge of a cliff in Gorge land. As they come to their senses, Nyssa looks to Billy.

NYSSA
(disorientated; breathless) “Billy? Billy, are you awake?”

BILLY
(groans) “I’ll be fine.” (to Nyssa) “What about you though? Did…did that monster…hurt you?”

DR. NETT
“Relax, boy! I merely tightened my grip around her neck long enough to cause her to go unconscious. I intended no permanent damage.”

Billy looks to Nyssa as she breathes deeply, taking in the fresh air.

NYSSA
(breathes deep) “I’ll be alright, Billy. I’m starting to feel better.”

Satisfied and relieved, Billy looks up to the Mud Man in his human form as Gun Nett. Nyssa looks up to him too, whilst Gun Nett looks down on them.

DR. NETT
(chuckles) “Your nervous systems should be returning back to normal! Sorry about tying you to the rocks! But at least this gives us a chance to talk!”

Nyssa and Billy find themselves unable to get up, as their arms are tied to some large boulders behind them. They’re tied up with some unusual ropes.

BILLY
“I…I can’t break free!”

Nyssa and Billy struggle to break free, but have little success.

NYSSA
(challengingly; to Dr. Nett) “Ropes composed of mud, I presume?”

DR. NETT
“Exactly! Traditional ropes are so out of date, aren’t they? I am able to hold the form of your bonds composed of mud with my own mind!”

BILLY
“What did you do to me? How did we get here? And where is here, anyway?”

DR. NETT
“You’re in Gorge Land, boy. And I merely knocked you out with my fist. Of course, I had to expand my fist to great effect and better composition of substance.”

NYSSA
“Who are you?! What do you want from us?”

Nyssa and Billy shift their weight whilst sitting on the rocky floor, as they try to get comfortable and shake off theie grogginess. Nett then slithers closer towards them.

DR. NETT
“I am a human of biological substance material. Did you know that?”

NYSSA
“Biological substance material?” (Pause) “But how can that be? You’re humanoid. You seem to have a body metabolism with structure. You’re able to keep your form together whereas other biological substance materials will be unable to contain stable cell structure. How can that work for you?”

DR. NETT
“I’ve gained practice with my new powers. From a certain mentor. And my employer.”

NYSSA
(puzzled) “Employer? Who is he?”

DR. NETT
“The one who wishes you destroyed! And I’m the one to do it!”

BILLY
“Then why don’t you get on with killing us and have it over with? Why are you keeping us alive?!”

DR. NETT
“Because you two and I…are not so different! We’re very alike!”

NYSSA
(defiantly) “We’re nothing like you! You’re the one who wanted us dead by those savages! You wanted to kill us! You’re a monster!”

DR. NETT
“I’ve chosen my path and you’ve chosen yours! I can live with that! While you call me a monster…I call it a great scientific achievement!” (Pause) “But to answer your question…the reason why I am able to stabilise my cell structure with the mud contained within me…is because the mud is alive.”

BILLY
“What? So…you’re actually…two beings all at once then? The mud and you?”

DR. NETT
“Bingo! That’s right, boy!” (laughs) “The mud was born of a substance meant to combine with another being to create a new form of life! Obviously none of the savages were willing to do that, since they were so scared of hurting their god! But I was drawn to that mud by my scientific curiosity and I become who I am now! The mud chose me! I am…the living Mud Man!”

NYSSA
(sceptically) “Scientific curiosity and conversing with false benefactors are entirely different things.”

DR. NETT
“You think so?” (Pause) “There are billions of humanoids and plant life on the surface of this planet! Many predators! And those teeming masses of life exist for the purpose of a few people…who can take a chance of fulfilling their destinies!”

BILLY
“Destinies? Is that what you think happened to you? You think you were destined for greater things because you became what you are! That’s a mockery of God’s creation!”

DR. NETT
“It’s exactly what I think! It’s exactly what I am!” (Pause) “The mud transformed me into a new man with new life! I am smarter and stronger than I ever was before!”

NYSSA
“And it’s made you insane!”

DR. NETT
“Not too insane, mind. For I can think and calculate every movement I make whilst I’m like this.” (Pause) “I can squash you; squeeze you and crush you like dirt with the power of my muddy hand right now if I wanted to!”

NYSSA
“Then why not do it? Go on then! Kill us!”

BILLY
(anxiously) “Nyssa?!”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, Billy. I know what I’m doing.”

Moment of tense silence, as Nett slowly leans in to Nyssa. He puts his hands around her neck, almost about to strangle her.

BILLY
“No! Nyssa, he’s going to strangle you!”

Nyssa gasps, whilst the Mud Man holds his grip on her by the neck. But eventually he lets go and changes his mind.

DR. NETT
“No!”

NYSSA
“No?”

DR. NETT
“That’s not what I’m going to do! I’m not going to submit to the orders of my master just yet and kill you instantly! Because I’m going to offer you two a choice!”

BILLY
“Choice?”

DR. NETT
“Join me! Become like me! Convert the mud within your own bodies and become a life-form like I am!”

BILLY
“What?!”

NYSSA
“No! We could never do that! Why should we become like you?!”

DR. NETT
“Think of the skills and gifts you’d gain if you could turn your whole body into a pile of mud like I can! No worries! No cares! No sickness!” (Pause) “No-one to tell you what to do, what to wear…or what to believe! Imagine what we as a threesome could accomplish together!”

NYSSA
“You know we can’t submit!”

Nett then becomes mud again, as he transforms his body and converts into a horrific blob that slithers on the ground. Nyssa and Billy are disgusted, once they see him about to leave.

DR. NETT
(grovels) “Think about it, you two!”

With that, the Mud Man slithers away as a snake and heads off down into the darkness of the Gorge Land. The slimy noises echo as he slithers off into the distance. Once the Mud Man has gone, Nyssa and Billy find themselves able to get up from the ground as their bonds have been broken.

BILLY
“Nyssa! We can get up!”

NYSSA
“He must have used his mind to break our bonds on the rock. It’s a wonder he didn’t kill us when he did.”

Nyssa and Billy stand up, scraping the mud off their wrists and arms, as they watch the Mud Man slithering away from Gorge Land.

BILLY
“Are you sure you’re alright, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I’m fine, Billy! But we must get away from here! These rock plates we’re on seem unstable!” (Pause) “Come on, Billy! Let’s go!”

Nyssa and Billy move on from the place, as they try to find a way to leave Gorge Land. They find it uneasy, as bits of rock break apart where they are and fall into the gorge. Nyssa and Billy eventually reach a place where they can get out of Gorge Land.

SCENE #106 – EXT – GORGE LAND, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Later that evening in Gorge Land, on the way to Ungol, the Doctor, Doromir, Dynda, Jason and Deletos are forced to walk by Morg and Pike as they follow Lo-Jo’s lead. Lo-Jo still has Orio the Parrot perched on his shoulder.

ORIO THE PARROT
(squawks) “Shiver me timbers!” (squawks)

They stop at the place where Nyssa and Billy were once there before with the Mud Man.

LO-JO
(heartily) “Jason lad? You’ve got the map, haven’t you?! Tell us where we are to go from here?”

DELETOS
“You expect Jason to tell you where we are from the map?!”

LO-JO
(coyly) “Oh I did ask kindly, Mr. Deletos! I hope I didn’t ask unkindly!”

Lo-Jo then takes out his laser pistol and clicks the trigger, ready to fire.

DOROMIR
(threateningly) “If you hurt the boy, I will…”

LO-JO
(laughs) “Hurt the boy, Captain? Who said I would hurt the boy? The boy should decide!”

Lo-Jo then trains his laser pistol on Dynda.

DOCTOR
(shouts) “No! Don’t shoot Dynda!”

LO-JO
“Oh I won’t, no! Not unless Jason doesn’t do this little thing I ask of him and use the map!”

DYNDA
“Don’t do it, Jason!”

JASON
“It’s alright, Dynda! I’m fetching my map now! I don’t want us all killed!”

DOROMIR
(agitated) “Don’t be so sentimental, Master Drodo!”

LO-JO
“That’s more like it! Very good of you, Jason lad!”

MORG
“Aye! Very good of you to respect us, Jason boy!”

PIKE
“Yeah, Jason boy!”

Orio the Parrot squawks, whilst Jason takes out the map he has from his pocket. He switches it on and activates the holographic map for all to see. Jason checks to see where they are on the map.

JASON
“We’re in Gorge Land now. So we move onto the dark forests of Usto and Marador before we come to the Retatif fields. There Ungol will stand.”

LO-JO
“Then we shall rest here for tonight! And wake in the morning!”

Lo-Jo cocks his laser pistol and put it back in its holster by his side.

DYNDA
“You weren’t really going to kill me, were you?”

LO-JO
(coyly) “Wasn’t I?”

DOCTOR
“There wasn’t any need to threaten us to come with you, Lo-Jo! You don’t even know what the treasure is, let alone know its there in the Ungol tower!”

LO-JO
“Ah but we know what it is, Doctor! It’s Orio Flinax’s treasure!”

DOCTOR
(agitated) “Yes, yes, so I’ve been made aware! But what is it exactly?! What is Orio Flinax’s treasure? If it’s not gold or jewels, then what is it?!”

LO-JO
“How should I know? All I know is that Orio buried it there for the Bullor to protect! And me and my hearties must get it!”

DOROMIR
(threateningly) “And we shall see to it that we stop you, Lo-Jo!”

LO-JO
“You cannot stop me, Captain!”

DOCTOR
“It doesn’t seem worth the bother of going after the treasure Lo-Jo, if you don’t know what the greatest treasure of the universe is!”

LO-JO
“Enough! You will lie on that rock floor and go to sleep!” (to Morg; Pike) “Morg; Pike! Get them down there!”

MORG
“Right, Lo-Jo!”

LO-JO
“And watch them!”

MORG
“Yes, Lo-Jo!” (to Doctor; Doromir; Deletos; Dynda; Jason) “Right, you lot! Get down on the ground!”

PIKE
“Yeah! Get down on the ground!”

Morg and Pike threaten their captives with their cutlasses and laser pistols. The Doctor, Doromir, Deletos, Dynda and Jason are forced to sit down on the rock-plated ground, as they’re being watched by Morg and Pike. The five heroes settle down uneasily, as they’re seemingly unable to escape. Jason puts his map away back into his coat pocket, as he looks up to see the dark tower before them.

JASON
“That dark tower’s so far away! I wish we were there and that this nightmare would end!”

DELETOS
“I thought you wanted to come, Jason lad! To have an adventure!”

JASON
“I did! That was the adventurer in me speaking! But I never thought it would be as dangerous and frightening as this!”

DOROMIR
“That’s what you get when you’ve been on adventures as long as I have, Jason. The danger and the suspense come unexpectedly.”

Whilst Jason, Deletos and Captain Doromir chat away to each other, Dynda quietly talks to the Doctor.

DYNDA
“How is that Lo-Jo Sil happens to have a sword similar to Jason’s sword Quasarain, Doctor? Are they the same sword?”

DOCTOR
(anxious) “I just hope Nyssa and Billy aren’t in any real danger as we are in now. Or that your friend Dr. Nett isn’t causing any harm to anyone else.”

DYNDA
“To be perfectly honest Doctor, I don’t know what to think about Dr. Nett. We were supposed to get married and…I’m not sure that’s possible! The way things are! And the monster he’s become! It’s only just sunk in!”

DOCTOR
“Well…hopefully all will be resolved in the end.” (Pause) “At least…let’s hope it works in our favour and not in somebody else’s.”

The Doctor ponders on this for a while, as he is about to settle down to sleep. The Doctor, Dynda, Doromir, Deletos and Jason continue to be watched by Morg and Pike. Thunderclouds rumble nearby overhead.

SCENE #107 – EXT – USTO, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
In the dark forest of Usto, close to Gorge Land, Nyssa and Billy walk through it as thunderclouds rumble above them. They’ve been walking for some time in the forest. They eventually stop, as the thunderclouds rumble again.

BILLY
“Oh no! I don’t like the sound of that! It’s going to rain, isn’t it?”

NYSSA
“We should find shelter!”

Thunderclouds rumbles again and rain starts to fall on them. Nyssa and Billy are startled once the rain hits them.

BILLY
(startled) “Yeah! You don’t have to tell me twice!”

NYSSA
(shivers) “We must get out of this rain!”

Billy looks around to see if he can find any shelter anywhere. He then spots something.

BILLY
“There’s a cave over there, Nyssa! We can shelter there for the night!”

NYSSA
“Good idea, Billy! Let’s go in!”

Nyssa and Billy make their way over the cave, as the rain pelts down on them.

SCENE #108 – INT – CAVE, USTO – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Nyssa and Billy manage to get inside the cave, as they shake the rainwater off their bodies and get themselves dry. The rain pelts down hard from outside, whilst Nyssa and Billy are inside the cave.

BILLY
“Good thing we got in here when we did! It’s torrential weather out there!”

NYSSA
“We should be able to sleep here until that rain stops!”

BILLY
“Yes. I never thought I’d be glad to feel the coolness of rain. It’s different when you’re caught in it though. It’s sometimes not pleasant.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “Let’s settle ourselves in before we go to sleep.”

BILLY
“Agreed. At least these blankets will keep us warm. I’ll light a fire!”

Billy find a couple of sticks on the ground and uses them, as he sets to work on lighting a fire within the cave. Nyssa lays out the blankets on the ground for her and Billy to sleep in.

BILLY
“How are you now with that infection of yours, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I’m not sure. It’s just numbness. I still feel weak.”

BILLY
(gradually) “Well, as long as that mud monster didn’t injure you further.”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
(concerned) “How are you feeling, Billy?”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “Oh I’m fine. The Mud Man did punch me but I didn’t feel a thing.”

NYSSA
(concerned) “No. I meant…how’s your own illness? Like me?”

BILLY
(realises) “Oh…yes. Err…I’ll be alright. It’s not that bad.”

NYSSA
“Why didn’t you tell me, Billy? You knew and yet you didn’t tell me you were infected.”

BILLY
(reluctantly) “I…I didn’t want to worry you with what you had!”

NYSSA
(compassionately) “Oh, you silly Billy! You should have told me! At least I would have known I wasn’t alone! I would have helped you as much as you would have helped me!”

BILLY
“I know, I’m sorry. I just…I just don’t think sometimes.” (Pause) “But once we get to Ungol, then we’ll have it all sorted out. Whether we meet the Doctor there or not.”

NYSSA
“You mustn’t pressure yourself! You shouldn’t stress when you have your own injuries to worry about.” (Pause) “You’ve been very good looking out for me, Billy. Isn’t it about time somebody looked out for you?”

BILLY
(nervously) “Um…this fire’s coming along very nicely, isn’t it?”

Billy checks the fire, at it heats up gradually for him and Nyssa to keep warm. Billy concentrates on the fire, whilst Nyssa sits next to him. She gently touches him and he breathes deeply.

NYSSA
“Billy?” (Pause) “You can tell me anything you want, you know. Do talk to me about things you want to talk about.”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
“Yeah. Sure.” (Pause) “Um…you…you can talk to me as well, you know. If you want to.”

NYSSA
“Of course.”

Both become silent, as Billy continues sorting out the fire, Nyssa watches him, as they reflect on their latest conversation. Thunderclouds rumble again and the rain keeps pelting down from outside.

SCENE #109 – EXT – GORGE LAND, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – NIGHT
It’s now night-time. The Doctor and party are sleeping, whilst Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike stay awake on watch. Whilst Doromir, Dynda, Jason and Deletos are asleep, the Doctor gradually wakes up. He realises that somebody’s close by. As he rises up from the ground, he looks up to see a dark figure before him. The Doctor recognises who it is.

DOCTOR
“So, there you are!”

SALVADOR
“Yes, Doctor! I live! Did you suspect I would not?”

The Doctor eventually gets up onto his feet, as he looks Salvador right in the eye.

DOCTOR
“Long time no see, Salvador. Last time I saw you, you were a boy!”

SALVADOR
“I came to see your face for one last time, Doctor! For you will soon be entering the last strands of my trap…and you will not be able to escape!”

DOCTOR
“Very heartening, I’m sure. You wouldn’t mind if I asked some questions to satisfy my curiosity.”

SALVADOR
“It does not matter whether you ask them or not, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Perhaps not. But I would like to ask them anyway.” (Pause) “Simply put…what have you been doing? This planet’s not real, is it?”

SALVADOR
(laughs) “Oh but it is, Doctor! This planet exists! It exists now!”

DOCTOR
“Then how come I’ve never heard of it?! I mean yes, I know it now through the use of biblical text and passing conversations with the people I’ve met! But never before I came here!”

SALVADOR
“Do you expect to know everything in the universe, Doctor? The universe is expanding! And you know it!”

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
(realises) “It was you who penetrated the TARDIS! You who caused the temporal convergence in Bath! You who caused the contradiction in Jane Austen’s life and corrupted Thorpe-Willoughby! Is that not so?”

SALVADOR
“You have very strong connections to very significant people, Doctor! Always a way for you to interfere with a lord such as me!”

DOCTOR
“And now you’re doing the same with corrupting Dr. Nett by making him this monster! And setting up this whole charade of a quest! Why? Why’s that?”

SALVADOR
“To humiliate you! Just as you humiliated me!”

DOCTOR
(apologetic) “Salvador, I’m so sorry for what happened to you! But you have to understand! At the time, we were only trying to save you!”

SALVADOR
“Save me?! In your language ‘save me’ means ‘torturing me’! You were no different than they were!”

DOCTOR
(defensively) “I was a different man then! Literally! I regretted some of the things I did back then! It was only opportune when I had a chance to leave!”

SALVADOR
“Do not try to wriggle your way out by apologising for what you did to me then! You caused me to suffer and now you’re going to pay the price!”

DOCTOR
“I can help you, if you’d just listen to me…!”

SALVADOR
“I don’t need your help, Doctor! I wish you to suffer just as you made me suffer!”

DOCTOR
“By this quest? By this Bullor that guards the treasure? Does it eat people up, Salvador?”

SALVADOR
“Oh…this Bullor is far more terrifying than you know! He’s the greatest fear this planet has ever had! The biggest scare! The scariest monster!”

DOCTOR
“This isn’t funny, Salvador! This isn’t a game, you know!”

SALVADOR
(yells) “I never said it was a game, Doctor! Everything has been working against you, you know! TO YOUR DEATH!”

Salvador’s yell causes the pirates Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike to come over and see what the commotion’s about.

MORG
“‘Ere! What’s going on here?!”

PIKE
“Yeah? What’s all the arguing about?!”

Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike arrive and become startled once they see Salvador before them.

MORG
(astonished) “You!”

PIKE
(astonished) “It’s…it’s that man! That man in black! The one who…”

LO-JO
“Lord Salvador! We did not realise…”

Salvador ignores the pirates, as he turns back to the Doctor.

SALVADOR
“The end is coming for you, Doctor! Your time will come very soon! And soon…you will wish…you had never dealt with me!”

Salvador laughs out loud triumphantly, as he starts to fade away.

DOCTOR
(shouts) “No! Wait! Come back! Salvador, come back!”

But it’s too late, as Salvador has gone. The Doctor remains still with Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike glaring at him.

LO-JO
(mockingly) “Enjoying a little chat with your enemy were we, Doctor?”

But before the Doctor can answer, the rock-plates in the Gorge Land suddenly start to shudder. The Doctor, Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike stumble forward, as they feel the violent shuddering.

MORG
“Oh my! An earthquake! There’s an earthquake!”

PIKE
“Oh I hate earthquakes!”

This causes Captain Doromir, Deletos, Jason and Dynda to wake up, as they are startled by the violent shuddering of Gorge Land’s rock plates.

JASON
“What is it?! What’s happening?!”

DELETOS
“And I was having such a lovely sleep!”

DYNDA
“It’s some sort of tremor! Within this Gorge Land! What’s going on?!”

DOROMIR
(angrily) “Is this your work, Doctor?!”

DOCTOR
(urgently) “We have to get out of here! Before this whole place falls in!”

LO-JO
(threateningly) “Oh no, Doctor! You’re not going to get away that easily! And that goes for all you! You’re all coming with us!”

DOCTOR
“Lo-Jo, I’m being serious…”

LO-JO
(interrupts) “Move!” (to Morg; Pike) “Morg; Pike! Get them moving!”

MORG
(threateningly) “Get up, you lot! Get moving!”

PIKE
(threateningly) “Yeah! Get moving!”

DYNDA
(shouts) “Alright! Alright! There’s no need to be so rough!”

Despite Dynda’s protests, she, the Doctor, Doromir, Deletos and Jason are roughly forced to move on by the pirates out of Gorge Land. The shuddering and trembling of the rock-plates still goes on.

SCENE #110 – INT – CAVE, USTO – DATE: 4198 – NIGHT
Back inside the cave with Nyssa and Billy, they have been sleeping for quite some time in their separate blankets. Rain keeps pelting down from outside during the night. The fire’s still burning, as they sleep. Just then, Nyssa wakes up, as she hears strange growls from outside.

NYSSA
(sleepily) “Billy? Is that you? Talking in your sleep again?”

But as she wakes, Nyssa realises that Billy isn’t speaking. As she comes to, she looks to see a pack of tigers outside the cave, staring in at her and growling ferociously. The tigers open their mouths growling and Nyssa whimpers terrified. She moves over to Billy and wakes him up.

NYSSA
(urgently; calls) “Billy! Billy, wake up!”

The tigers roar angrily, before Billy eventually wakes up to Nyssa’s call.

BILLY
“What is it? What’s the matter, Nyssa?!”

NYSSA
“Them!”

Billy looks to see the tigers outside.

BILLY
(terrified) “Whoa! It’s Shere Khan! A pack of them!”

NYSSA
“I don’t know how long they’ve been there! I’ve only just woken up!”

The tigers roar as they prowl slowly into the cave to advance.

NYSSA
(panics) “They’re coming in! They’re coming in for us!”

The tigers continuously growl, as Nyssa and Billy stand up from the ground and back away from the pack. Billy then looks to the flickering fire. He picks up a branch from the ground and places it to the fire.

BILLY
“Thank goodness we’ve got this fire still going!”

NYSSA
“What are you going to do with that branch, Billy?”

BILLY
“This! Tigers can’t stand fire, you see!”

With that, Billy instantly shines the scorching branch at the tigers to scare them off as they enter the cave. The tigers roar enraged and terrified, as they back away out of the cave. Billy keeps on scaring the tigers with his flaming torch as they retreat.

NYSSA
(shocked) “Billy!”

BILLY
“It’s only to scare them off, Nyssa! I’m not going to hurt them!”

This has the required effect, as the tigers leave the cave and get caught in the rain outside. Once they’re out, Billy runs out to meet them.

NYSSA
(cries) “Billy, what are you doing?! Come back!”

BILLY
“I’m going to see that they’re well away from here! I’ll come back for you, don’t worry! We won’t have any more trouble when they’ve gone!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Billy, come back! Come back!”

But Billy has already gone outside. Nyssa becomes worried, fearing for Billy’s life. She then cries out in pain, feeling a certain agony all over her. But Nyssa regains her composure and follows Billy outside with the pack of tigers.

NYSSA
(cries) “Billy, please! Please, come back!”

SCENE #111 – EXT – GORGE LAND, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – NIGHT
Meanwhile, in Gorge Land, the Doctor and company run for their lives. They make to escape, whilst the rock-plates crumble apart and fall into the abyss.

DELETOS
“This is dangerous territory, Captain! We shouldn’t have come across this place to rest! I did say so!”

MORG
(threateningly) “Move it, old man!”

PIKE
“Yeah! Move it, old man!”

DELETOS
“Stop calling me ‘old man’, you vicious fiends!”

Suddenly, rock-plates crack underneath and start to break apart.

LO-JO
(cries) “Me hearties! Run!”

ORIO THE PARROT
(squawks; terrified) “Run!! Run!” (squawks)

As they run, the rock-plates fall in. But they manage to get onto the other side and survive. They all get away from the falling rock-plates, except Dynda who finds herself screaming as she falls in.

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Dynda!”

DYNDA
(screams) “Doctor; Jason! Help me!”

Dynda falls, before she grabs hold onto the edge of where the rock-plates have just cracked and fallen in. She dangles there, as she holds on and fears for her life.

DYNDA
(shouts) “Doctor; Jason! Please, help me!”

The Doctor and Jason run over to reach Dynda and to help her back up onto firm ground.

DOCTOR
“Dynda! Hold on! We’ll get you out of there!”

JASON
“Yeah! Take our hands, Dynda! Quick!”

Dynda gradually grabs onto the Doctor and Jason’s hands to be pulled up.

DYNDA
“Got them!”

But then the cliff with the Doctor and Jason on it also begins to crack. Dynda screams, as she finds herself going back further down into the abyss.

LO-JO
(cries) “Get back up here, Doctor; Jason lad! That cliff’s going to give way!”

But the Doctor is determined, as he and Jason try to pull Dynda up.

DOCTOR
(shouts) “Hold on, Dynda! Hold on!”

But Dynda squirms, as she’s unable to keep her grip on both the Doctor and Jason’s hands.

DYNDA
(cries) “Doctor; Jason! I’m slipping!”

JASON
(shouts) “It’s no good, Doctor! Once we get her up here, the cliff will break! We’ll fall to our deaths!”

DOCTOR
“We must get her up here, Jason! Help me pull her up!”

But as the Doctor tries to pull Dynda further back up, the cliff lurches forward and both he and Jason lose their grip. Dynda finally falls down into the abyss, screaming out loud in terror.

JASON
(shouts) “No! Dynda!”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Dynda!”

They watch mortified, seeing Dynda fall to her death.
