6. The Gren

SCENE #50 – EXT – RETATIF FIELDS, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Later that evening, far from the quest hunters; Nyssa; Billy and the Doctor, a desolate set of plains lie on Junglos. The plains are swampy and murky, as cold winds blow in the air and it is raining heavily. This happens to be a stretch of marshland that once used to be a battlefield called the Retatif Fields, where pirates and Gren savages fought long ago. In the centre of the Retatif Fields stands a foreboding dark tower. This is the tower of Ungol. It stands menacingly and terrible, as storm clouds gather overhead.

SCENE #51 – INT – GREAT HALL, UNGOL – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Inside the great hall of Ungol, two guardians pace to and fro as they patrol the foot of the main stairway. These guardians are Cartcra and Corate. They carry huge spears and wear dark armour that clanks as they walk. Lightning strikes and thunderclouds rumble whilst it’s raining heavily from outside. Just then, a hideously terrifying and screeching roar echoes from above the tower. The two guardians Cartcra and Corate listen to the roar, as it shudders the whole tower of Ungol.

CORATE
“The Bullor has woken from its sleep. It seems to be in a tumultuous state!”

CARTCRA
“We know that the Bullor would be in such a state when the time would come, Corate. When it would need its guardians to protect its foul skin!”

CORATE
“Well said, Cartcra. But are we to adjourn from our posts and see what the beast wants?”

Whilst the beast roars terribly upstairs, there’s a small knock made at the front door from outside. Both guardians prepare their spears for action, whilst the knocking goes on.

CORATE
“Somebody knocks at our door! It could be the princess!”

CARTCRA
“Be silent, Corate! I shall attend to the door!”

Cartcra makes his way to the front door, armour and chain mail clanking as he goes. He reaches the front door and puts his hand to the doorknob.

CARTCRA
(dignified) “Who comes to the doors of Ungol? State your business!”

ELAR-JOM
“It’s me! Elar-Jom, daughter of Ja-Ara and Jor-Eliv and princess of the Gren tribe! I bring you food and drink!”

CORATE
(cries) “It is the princess, Cartcra! I told you she’d…”

CARTCRA
(sternly) “I will let her in.”

With that, Cartcra unbolts the door and opens it. Opening the door, Elar-Jom enters. She’s soaked to the skin whilst it rains outside.

ELAR-JOM
(flustered) “As soon as I walked on the swampy marshlands it rained! I’m glad I got in! Though I’m sure the mud had nothing to do with it!”

Elar-Jom freshens herself from the damp cold weather, before she addresses Cartcra and Corate.

ELAR-JOM
(cheerily) “I’ve brought you some food and drink, boys! I know how you patrol the long nights! Not something I would like to do normally, but…”

Cartcra abruptly takes the food and drink from Elar-Jom, as he makes his way back to join Corate at his post. He places the provisions of food and drink on a table in the centre of the hall.

CORATE
“Thank you most sincerely, your highness! You always give so graciously…”

CARTCRA
(interrupts) “We are grateful to you, your highness! This will help us! The Bullor is waking!”

ELAR-JOM
“Is he now?” (laughs) “You don’t know how long it took me to get the food sorted. My mother, she can be quite a…”

CARTCRA
(interrupts; sternly) “Thank you for your time, Princess! You need not detain us further!”

Moment of silence, as Elar-Jom is quite taken aback by Cartcra’s stern manner.

ELAR-JOM
“Oh. Well. I’ll be off then.”

With that, Elar-Jom heads for the door to leave the main hall and out of the tower. She opens the door and closes it behind her once she’s out. Once Elar-Jom’s gone, the guardians Cartcra and Corate resume their posts whilst the storm persists from outside.

CORATE
“She treats us well, Cartcra! Elar-Jom treats us well!”

CARTCRA
“Yes Corate, she does. But she is a child to us! We are guardians and we protect the Bullor. That is all that matters!”

CORATE
“We used to be like them, Cartcra. We were once Gren.”

CARTCRA
“Yes. And I wish not to be reminded of the degrading position we once held. People like Elar-Jom deserve our superiority and should treat us as if we were better than them. Not like some mindless savage that Ja-Ara’s tribe is now.”

Thunderclouds and the roar of the Bullor echoes again, as the towers trembles. Just then, Salvador appears before them.

SALVADOR
“That is not the proper way to treat an heir to the Gren throne, Guardian Cartcra!”

Both Cartcra and Corate are startled, once they see Salvador before them.

CORATE
(flabbergasted) “Who is this stranger that lurks in our halls?!”

CARTCRA
(to Salvador) “I did not see you come into these halls by the front doors, sir! How did you get in?”

SALVADOR
“I do not need permits to enter the sacred tower or to knock on the door, Cartcra and Corate! For I am Salvador!”

CORATE
(challengingly) “You seem so sure about yourself, aren’t you?!”

CARTCRA
“You should remember that you are in the precincts of the great wild animal that dwells here! Whoever dares testify against the Bullor will receive an omen that will curse him or her to the end of their days!”

SALVADOR
“I have not come to testify against your master, good guardians, but to give you a warning.”

CARTCRA
“What warning do you speak of, so-called knowing cloaked figure?”

SALVADOR
“Dark times are predicted. The pirates will come to seek for the treasure their brotherhood has been so determined to have. Their invasion will begin soon!”

CORATE
(shocked) “Invasion? From pirates!”

CARTCRA
“We shall stand against these accusers of ours! We will protect the beast from their invasion!”

SALVADOR
“But one who bears a great sword shall be able to pass! And that person is on this planet! And he bears that sword to rid the beast!”

CORATE
“You don’t mean…”

SALVADOR
“I do mean, young Corate. Quasarin is on this planet, and the one who bears it shall use it to crush the wild animal! You shall be guardians no more and the tower of Ungol will collapse! Beware of this warning, Guardians!”

Both Corate and Cartcra are concerned by this warning, as Salvador disappears from sight.

SCENE #52 – EXT – ALESKI, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
In Aleski, miles away from Ungol, there is a Gren village. Many Gren warriors; tribesmen and women dwell there, chatting to each other; fighting with each other and even laughing and messing about. Some teenage boys and girls laugh their heads off, whilst some grown-up men discuss matters of war and politics. Amongst these are the tribe leaders Queen Ja-Ara and King Jor-Eliv. They kneel before some strange altar, as they serve something sacred to them. Jor-Eliv is proud, strong and dignified whilst Ja-Ara is wild and full of vigour.

JA-ARA
(chants) “Mud! Mud! Mud, oh great mud! Hear our voices!”

JOR-ELIV
(chants) “Oh mud! Great mud! Oh great mud! Listen to our prayers!”

JA-ARA
(glorified, loudly) “The Gren seek gratification of the future! We wish to be saved by those who trespass! We wish for no-more clean stinking strangers! Those filthy fresh creatures must leave us alone! We beg you to bring us a messiah to deliver us! We ask…”

Just then, Elar-Jom enters.

ELAM-JOM
(interrupts) “Do you have to speak so loudly for your precious mud, Mum?”

Ja-Ara stamps her feet and howls in anger, once she’s been interrupted by Elar-Jom.

JA-ARA
(angrily) “Shut up and leave us alone, dim daughter! Your father and I are busy!”

ELAR-JOM
“I came to tell you I have done my deed, Mum! I have given the boys at the black tower food and water.”

JA-ARA
(yells) “Go away, Elar-Jom! Why should I deserve a useless daughter?! I want to serve my mud! I WANT TO SERVE MY MUD!”

ELAR-JOM
(angrily) “Well don’t let me stop you serving your stinking mud, Mum!”

JA-ARA
(angrily) “How dare you speak like that to me?! To your mother!”

JOR-ELIV
“Calm yourself, Ja-Ara dear! It isn’t worth rebuking our daughter! In front of these people!”

JA-ARA
(savagely) “You can shut up too, you fat stinky boar!”

Everyone gasps once they hear these cruel words spoken by Ja-Ara.

JA-ARA
(shouts) “All you lot can shut up as well!” (to Elar-Jom) “You, daughter! You are next in line to be tribe leader! And when you mate with one as insignificant and boring as those of this tribe, you shall have to keep the traditions; beliefs and principles of our people!”

ELAR-JOM
“Believe me, Mum! I’m quite capable of learning [for myself…]”

But Elar-Jom gets interrupted, as a hunting party returns. There are moans and groans, as Brother Sor, Antuss and Volum are among the hunting party that return. All the hunting party suffer greatly.

JOR-ELIV
(surprised; puzzled) “What has happened here? Ja-Ara, these hunters! They have been hurt in battle!”

JA-ARA
(sardonically) “Duh! I can see that with my own eyes, husband! I’m not stupid!”

ELAR-JOM
(concerned) “Something terrible must have happened to them!”

JA-ARA
(sardonically) “Duh, great daughter! I hadn’t thought of that!”

Ja-Ara, Jor-Eliv and Elar-Jom rise up to meet the wounded hunting party as they address Antuss, Voulm and Brother Sor.

JA-ARA
(bitterly) “What is this, you stupid goons?! Antuss; Volum? Why are your men and women blood-strewn and worn out?! Are they not Gren warriors filled with relentless strength?!”

ANTUSS
“We have been in battle, royal highness! You can see our party has suffered, dear queen!”

JA-ARA
(bitterly) “Don’t ‘dear queen’ me! Tell me what happened or I shall kick your bellies!”

VOLUM
“We encountered a group of clean stinky trespassers in the precincts of Waldo! We made an attack before they tricked us with their boom-booms and blew up the walls!”

ANTUSS
“It will take months for those great Waldonian walls to be rebuilt, king and queen!”

JOR-ELIV
“Never mind about trivialities, you jerks!”

ANTUSS
(proudly) “We managed to capture two survivors of that party though! From the boom-boom of the walls! A boy and a girl!”

VOLUM
“We took them to the Skull Fortress where Brother Sor provided judgement!”

SOR
“I judged the boy and girl with a plague of precious Pinators!”

JOR-ELIV
(pleased) “Excellent solution, Sor! A fine end to give to young abominations!”

JA-ARA
(ignorantly) “You saw to it that they were both infected!”

ANTUSS
(solemnly) “The girl was but then we were attacked!”

JA-ARA
(angrily) “What?! You did not infect both boy and girl with Pinators!”

ELAR-JOM
“They were attacked, Mum! Didn’t you hear him say that?!”

JA-ARA
(savagely) “They did not infect both boy and girl! That is despicable in the eyes of the queen!” (to Antuss; Volum) “You two are pathetic! HEAR ME?! PATHETIC!!”

VOLUM
“We did all we could to defend ourselves from the pirates!”

JOR-ELIV
“Pirates?! You don’t mean…”

ANTUSS
“We’re not sure what to know, great king! They attacked us before we could know their name. They were trying to rescue the puny sinners.”

SOR
(glorified) “The boy’s soul may have survived, but the girl’s mind will certainly be in turmoil from the bite of the bug!”

ELAM-JOM
“Shut up, Sor!”

VOLUM
(angrily; to Ja-Ara) “Our people are in great pain! I don’t see why you should accuse us for having failed when we were frightened out of our wits during the battle, O great queen!”

Ja-Ara becomes very angry, as she takes her spear and thrusts it into Volum. She stabs him in the stomach and holds him whilst he gasps breathlessly.

JA-ARA
(cruelly) “You dare to defy your leader, imp! You know what it means to make your queen and tribe leader mad with red eyes!” (spits) “Death!”

Ja-Ara eventually pulls her spear out of Volum. Volum falls to the ground. Antuss and Elar-Jom come by him, as Volum loses consciousness.

ANTUSS
(cries; upset) “Volum! Volum, my comrade!”

ELAR-JOM
(bitterly; to Ja-Ara) “You didn’t have to do that, Mum! You didn’t have to strike someone with your spear for expressing an opinion!”

JA-ARA
(cows) “Shut up, girl! He opposed Ja-Ara! He should know it’s unwise to spit in a savage woman’s face for she will spit back, but spit harder and spit fouler!”

JOR-ELIV
(angrily) “We lost one of our hunters, Ja! And all because of you!”

JA-ARA
“We have more hunters, husband! Do not fret so!”

ELAR-JOM
“We must do something! We must save this man!”

JA-ARA
(savagely) “No! He must die!”

ELAR-JOM
(shouts; angrily) “You can’t let him die!”

JA-ARA
(coldly) “We must all die, Elar-Jom! None of us are allowed to live!”

Ja-Ara walks away, whilst Elar-Jom turns back to see Antuss distressed as he watches his comrade Volum die. Moment of silence.

ANTUSS
(cries) “He’s dead! Volum’s dead!”

Antuss then lets out a enraged cry of bitter sorrow, as he mourns for the loss of his friend Volum. Elar-Jom comes closer to Antuss to comfort him as she places her hand around his shoulder.

ELAR-JOM
(mournfully) “He has passed on to the next life, Antuss! Let the grace of the mud protect him on his way to rebirth!”

ANTUSS
(upset) “I have lost my comrade! What am I to do without my comrade?!”

Antuss cries bitterly, whilst Elar-Jom comforts him in an embrace.

SCENE #53 – EXT – ROSAMAN RIVER, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, at the Rosaman River close to Waldo, the Doctor and Dynda try to find Dynda’s jeep.

DYNDA
“Here we are! Here’s the Rosaman River! Now the jeep should be near…” (gasps) “Oh no!”

The Doctor and Dynda eventually find a damaged jeep, hit by Gren arrows and sunk off the bank into the river.

DYNDA
(shocked) “Oh no! This is terrible!”

DOCTOR
“Seems to be that way, yes. That’s what happens! The shocking and unexpected happens!”

The Doctor pulls one of the Gren arrow out from one of the jeep’s tyres. The tyre deflates once he’s pulled it out.

DYNDA
(anxiously) “Those are Gren arrows, Doctor! Don’t touch the tips of them! They contain poison!”

With that, the Doctor drops the arrow to the ground.

DOCTOR
(gratefully) “Thanks for warning me, Dynda! Obviously these Gren natives want to prevent us taking the jeep!”

DYNDA
“They could have easily taken the jeep apart or destroyed it completely!”

DOCTOR
“And yet they didn’t!”

Moment of silence.

DYNDA
“Well, this will take us longer to get back to the hut! It’s miles from here to Lenzia!”

Meanwhile the Doctor becomes curious, as he kneels to the ground to pick up a small book buried in the leaves. Once he’s picked it up, the Doctor blows the leaves off the book and opens it.

DOCTOR
“Interesting!”

DYNDA
“You found something, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes! A book! But it’s a peculiar book!”

The Doctor turns over a number of pages in the book he’s found.

DOCTOR
“It contains small text! And it’s written in the words as the Gren would use in their language! I presume its Gren.”

DYNDA
“That book is a book of legend you hold in your hand, Doctor. The Bible of Junglos!”

DOCTOR
“Bible? The holy word?”

DYNDA
“If you like to call it that. It contains a history of the accounts of all that happened in Junglos. There are six books of Orio Flinax and eleven books of the history of Junglos. Of course it’s a condensed version up to the present day! You don’t get bibles that small, you know. The big book is contained in the tower of Ungol!”

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “Really? How fascinating!”

The Doctor then turns back to the first page of the books to read it.

DOCTOR
(reads)‘The first book of Orio Flinax.’ A very fitting start. And a very fitting verse to begin with.’ (continues; reads)‘In the beginning…’(chuckles; reads)‘In the beginning…the heavens and the earth were created. The world was formless and empty. Darkness covered the surface of the deep and the spirit of its maker hovered over its waters.’

Moment of silence.

DOCTOR
“Who wrote this, Dynda?”

DYNDA
(ignorantly) “I don’t know. Some guy who was there before the time the world was created. I’m a scientist. I’m not interested in the planet’s full history.”

DOCTOR
“Pity.” (Pause) “And who was the creator of the heavens and the earth according to this text? Was it God?”

DYNDA
“How should I know? Why do you ask these questions?”

DOCTOR
“No, it’s just…usually bibles that have lines like that start off with God or a creator. It doesn’t seem to mention what his or her name is in here.”

Moment of silence.

DYNDA
“Are we going to do something or are you just going to read that book?!”

DOCTOR
(thinks) “Hmm? Oh yes!” (Pause) “Certainly, of course! Um…I’d like to see the full version of this Bible of Junglos at the tower of Ungol! So I suggest we make for Ungol!”

DYNDA
“Ungol? Why Ungol? What’s the point of looking for that bible?”

DOCTOR
“There seems to be more at stake here than we realise, Dynda! There may be something we’re overlooking! And I wouldn’t want to miss that opportunity! And I think the answer may lie in the tower of Ungol!”

DYNDA
“But we’re supposed to be looking for my employer and friend Dr Gun Nett!”

DOCTOR
“We can look for him on the way into Ungol! He may have gone deeper in the jungle as you couldn’t find him yesterday!”

DYNDA
“You think so?”

DOCTOR
(confidently) “Absolutely! Like you said ‘the jungle is more than a jungle’!”

DYNDA
(thinks) “Alright! We’ll do it your way! I don’t quite get it but we’ll do it like that!”

DOCTOR
“Splendid! You know I’m really glad we teamed up!”

DYNDA
(pessimistic) “I’m starting to wonder what we teamed up for!”

DOCTOR
“All will be revealed, Dynda.” (Pause) “Now! In order to get to Ungol, I suggest we make for where Captain Doromir and Mr. Deletos were heading. To Edolas!”

DYNDA
“But we might bump into them!”

DOCTOR
“Then we have to be on our best behaviour!”

With that, the Doctor and Dynda leave the damaged jeep and head back into the forest to make for Edolas.

SCENE #54 – EXT – ALESKI, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Back at the Gren village in Aleski, Antuss keeps mourning for Volum who’s dead. Upset by this loss of life, Elar-Jom stands up and turns on her mother Ja-Ara.

ELAR-JOM
“You didn’t have to do it, Mum! Completely unnecessary! A loss to our forces!”

JA-ARA
(cruelly) “It is better to be savage than it is to be humble! Our strength and wild nature shall overcome these stinkers!”

ELAR-JOM
(protests) “But Mum!”

JA-ARA
“You should be grateful! You are the next comrade for Antuss!”

Brother Sor and Antuss stand up at this, astonished by what Ja-Ara has said.

SOR
(astonished) “What is that, great leader? Elar-Jom to become the next captain with Antuss?”

ANTUSS
(challengingly) “Me? Working with the queen’s daughter? The daughter of the one who killed my best mate here?!”

Moment of silence, as everyone becomes astonished. Ja-Ara smirks before she turns to Jor-Eliv.

JA-ARA
“Jor-Eliv! Bring me the necklace!”

JOR-ELIV
“Yes, dear!”

Jor-Eliv takes out a strange necklace filled with odd jewels from his savage clothes. This arouses Brother Sor, as he recognises the necklace.

SOR
“Hark! It is the necklace! The necklace, I say!”

Ja-Ara takes the necklace from Jor-Eliv and approaches Elar-Jom.

ELAR-JOM
“Mum? What do you think you’re doing?”

JA-ARA
“I have decided to give you Elar-Jom, daughter of my own and my husband, a gift of great and total domination to all hunters of the Gren!”

Ja-Eliv then puts the jewelled necklace around Elar-Jom’s neck, quite roughly as Elar-Jom winces slightly in pain. Everyone cheers once they see this happen.

ELAR-JOM
(bewildered) “Mum! What have you done?”

JA-ARA
“And now! I claim you, Elar-Jom daughter of Gren, to be known as Boom-Shakalah! Hunter of the drums! For that is what your wear around your neck! The necklace of Boom-Shakalah!”

The Gren savages cheer more.

JOR-ELIV
(chants) “Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom Shakalah! [Boom-Shakalah…”]

The Gren savages join in with Jor-Eliv’s chant of ‘Boom-Shakalah’, which embarrasses Elar-Jom greatly.

GREN
(chants) “…Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom Shakalah! [Boom-Shakalah…”]

JA-ARA
(to Elar-Jom) “That is the necklace of Boom-Shakalah which you shall wear always, daughter! In savage terms, she will never be tamed!” (Pause) “What a shame! For it is my daughter, the only heir to the tribe; a girl’s hair so dark blonde, that exposes her dull features and unable agility; for her face to be squashed!”

Elar-Jom becomes hurt by her mother’s words, whilst everyone chants ‘Boom-Shakalah’ around her.

GREN
(chants) “…Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom Shakalah! [Boom-Shakalah…”]

SCENE #55 – EXT – MISTO, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Somewhere deep in the western forests of Misto, Jason has been searching for food and provisions of water on his own. He carries a pile of fruit and coconuts in his arms, as he makes his way back through the forest to find Pike.

JASON
(calls) “Mr. Pike? Mr. Pike? Where are you? I’ve got fruit and coconuts here! I hope it’ll be enough!” (Pause) “Mr. Pike?”

Jason recieves no response. He continues walking before he stops at a tree.

JASON
“Oh well. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to take a rest. And have an apple while I’m at it.”

Jason sits down beside the tree and takes one of the apples from the pile of fruit and coconuts he’s carrying. He bites into the apple, eating and chomping away as he enjoys it.

JASON
(chomps) “I wonder…I wonder how Captain Doromir and Mr. Deletos are. I hope they managed to survive that blast…”

Jason stops mid-sentence, as he then hears a fierce argument nearby. He listens to Pike and Morg bicker with each other.

JASON
“Ah! There’s Mr. Pike! And Mr. Morg’s with him too!” (puzzled) “They don’t seem to be very happy.”

Jason keeps quiet, as he listens to the conversation between Morg and Pike from a distance.

MORG
“I don’t care what Lo-Jo says! I don’t agree to this delaying of our quest for the sake of that boy and girl! We should kill them while we still can!”

PIKE
“Like when we tried to kill that son-of-a-witch captain and his dopey financier?!”

MORG
“They may have been killed! The explosion was big enough!”

PIKE
“And yet they may not be dead! I agree with Lo-Jo! It’s too risky to kill the boy and girl!”

MORG
“You want to go with what Lo-Jo says just because he’s in charge of the brotherhood?”

Pike and Morg keep on arguing from a distance, as Jason eavesdrops on them.

JASON
(quietly) “Brotherhood? Lo-Jo’s in charge of a brotherhood?”

Pike and Morg then stop arguing, as they realise they’re not alone.

PIKE
“Oh! Morg, look!”

MORG
“Why! If it isn’t Lo-Jo come to interrupt our conversation!”

As Pike and Morg greet Lo-Jo…

JASON
(quietly) “Lo-Jo? Here? This doesn’t seem good!”

Jason continues listening, whilst Lo-Jo is angry with Morg and Pike.

LO-JO
“I’m an easy man! A gentleman of great fortune says most! But it makes me sick to journey through this god-forsaken jungle with the likes of you!”

MORG
“Lo-Jo!”

LO-JO
“Now listen, you morons!” (Pause) “If anyone of you attempts to double-cross me, I’ll see to it that I shoot you on the spot like I did with that scurvy mate, Harbork! Remember lads? Remember what happened to him?!”

Morg and Pike shudder, as they listen to Lo-Jo.

JASON
(shocked; quietly) “Harbork?! They killed Harbork?!”

Jason continues listening.

LO-JO
“So, when we kill those two youngsters, we shall do it delicately! The girl is dying slowly with that insect bite. So it would serve well to put her out of her misery as soon as possible!”

Morg and Pike mutter in agreement.

MORG
“Good suggestion, Lo-Jo!”

LO-JO
“BUT…we must avoid any suspicion from Jason Drodo!”

PIKE
“Why worry about Master Drodo?!”

MORG
“Yeah! Why not kill him as well?! He’s a nuisance to us as it is!”

LO-JO
(shouts; angrily) “No one kills the boy! DO YOU HEAR ME! As long as I’m alive, no hand shall cut the boy’s throat!” (Pause) “We are getting closer to our destination! The sooner we go, the closer we get to the dark tower! We shall have the treasure for ourselves!

Lo-Jo, Morg and Pike cheer in agreement.

MORG
“Then we shall kill our enemies!”

PIKE
“Yeah! Kill our enemies, yeah!”

LO-JO
“We’ll kill them all!”

MORG
(heartily) “Yes! That’s exactly what I was going to say, Lo-Jo!”

The three pirates laugh heartily. Meanwhile, Jason attempts to move away slowly.

JASON
“I’ve heard enough! I’ve got to warn the young lady Nyssa and Mr. Billy before Lo-Jo gets them.”

As he moves off, Jason drops the fruit he carries to the floor. This alerts the pirates.

PIKE
“Ere! What was that?”

MORG
“I definitely heard it!”

Panicking, Jason runs off instantly to find Nyssa and Billy. Meanwhile, the pirates arrive at where Jason was. They look down on the ground.

LO-JO
“Look lads! See what’s down there?”

PIKE
“Yeah! A pile of fruit! And coconuts!”

MORG
“Must have fallen from a tree!”

Lo-Jo kneels down to inspect the fruit and coconuts on the ground.

LO-JO
(gradually) “No, men!”

MORG
(astonished) “What? What was that, Lo-Jo?”

LO-JO
“These fruits and coconuts did not fall off a tree! They were dropped!”

PIKE
“Dropped?”

LO-JO
“Yes!”

Lo-Jo then stands up from the ground.

LO-JO
“I’d say our bluff with the boy has been seen through. We have been suspected!”

SCENE #56 – EXT – MISTO, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, Jason leads Nyssa and Billy out of the Misto forest on the west side. Nyssa is exhausted and weak as they go a, whilst Billy holds her for support.

NYSSA
“What’s happening? Where are you taking us?”

JASON
“It’s alright! I’m helping you escape!”

BILLY
“Escape?! Nyssa’s not well here! You can’t force her to go through this jungle in such a state she’s in!”

NYSSA
(assuredly) “Billy, it’s all alright!”

BILLY
(apprehensive) “It’s not alright, Nyssa. You’re ill!” (to Jason) “What’s all the fuss about?”

JASON
“Trust me, you two! You’re in great danger if you remain here! Those crooks will kill you!”

NYSSA
“Crooks? You mean Mr. Sil and his men!”

JASON
“They’re space pirates! Pirates who want to kill you for treasure!”

BILLY
(shocked) “Pirates! Those goons are pirates and you knew!”

JASON
“I only just heard their plan about killing all in their sight so that they can reach where X marks the spot! I didn’t believe they would be vicious but Captain Doromir had his doubts.”

They walk to the far edge of the forest, as they reach a border that cuts off from Misto. Jason takes out the map from his pocket and switches it on, activating the hologram.

BILLY
“Whoa! That looks like a map!”

NYSSA
“It’s holographic! In three dimensions!”

BILLY
“Yikes! Just like the simi-suites on the space hotel!”

NYSSA
“Yes, but limited within a small quantity of byte memory.”

Jason then shows Nyssa and Billy the map.

JASON
“Here we are! This path here should get you two to Trinas.” (Pause) “Walk right until you come to a region called Dar. Don’t go left to the ‘land of the savages’. For it is that way!”

BILLY
“What?! You expect me and Nyssa to go through the jungle, knowing we might run into those…”

JASON
(interrupts; insistently) “Please! Do as I say! Time is short and those pirates may know that I’ve betrayed them already in helping you to escape!”

Jason keeps the map, before he hands something to Nyssa and Billy.

JASON
“Take these with you! There are two blankets for each of you and some food and provisions. They should help you survive these rainforests!”

BILLY
“You can’t ask us to…”

NYSSA
“Please, Billy! We have to do as Jason says!”

BILLY
“But those wild men and women might get us!”

NYSSA
“We have to risk it, Billy! Please, let’s go before Jason’s caught!”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
(sighs; reluctantly) “Okay.” (to Nyssa) “Will you be able to manage?”

NYSSA
“As long as you’re with me Billy, yes!” (to Jason) “Thanks, Jason! We really appreciate you helping us!”

BILLY
“Yeah I’m sorry I seemed a bit ‘off’ with you, Jason. I just worry for Nyssa you see. And I’m concerned for her safety. Thank you for helping us all the same.”

JASON
“I understand. If I was in your position, I’d feel the same way.” (Pause) “Now please! Go!”

NYSSA
“Let’s go, Billy!”

BILLY
“Right, Nyssa!”

With that, Nyssa and Billy head off as they disappear into another part of the jungle. Relieved, Jason makes his way back through the Misto forest and retraces his steps.

JASON
(uncomfortable) “I’m really going to dread this now! I just hope Lo-Jo and the others don’t suspect anything!”

Suddenly, Jason is jumped upon by Morg as he holds him from behind. Morg draws his sword and places it around Jason’s neck.

MORG
“Don’t move now, lad! Unless you want me to slit you dry, like!”

As Jason gets held by Morg with sword at his throat, Lo-Jo appears with Orio the Parrot on his perch. Pike follows behind Lo-Jo.

ORIO THE PARROT
(squawks) “Aha me hearties! Aha me hearties!” (squawks)

Jason attempts to break away, before Morg catches hold of him again.

JASON
(cries; protests) “Let me go! Let me go!”

MORG
(tutts) “None of that, lad! I gave you a warning!”

Morg tightens the sword around Jason’s neck.

PIKE
(cheers) “You got him, Morg! You got the lad!”

Lo-Jo advances slowly to Jason, seeing the anxious look on his face.

LO-JO
“Well, Jason! I really thought you were one of us! One of the Brotherhood! Not like you to backstab us, is it?!”

Jason trembles, afraid of what Lo-Jo and his men intend to do to him.

SCENE #57 – EXT – ALESKI, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Back at the Gren village in Aleski, the Gren savages continue to chant and cheer over Elar-Jom’s promotion to ‘leader of the hunters’, as they chant…

GREN
(chants) “…Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom-Shakalah! Boom Shakalah! [Boom-Shakalah…”]

JA-ARA
(yells; interrupts) “Ah, knock it off!”

Everyone gets disturbed and put off by Ja-Ara’s abrupt order. They soon simmer down and stop chanting.

ELAR-JOM
(relieved) “Thank goodness for that! They were giving me a headache!”

Ja-Ara then turns to the Gren and makes an announcement.

JA-ARA
“Now that our hunter of the drums has been called upon, we must prepare ourselves for war! These trespassers must be stamped on! And with the glory of the mud, we can do it!”

The Gren savages cheer, once they hear Ja-Ara’s words.

JA-ARA
“The caverns shall be churned! The weapons shall be forged! The armoury shall be chastened! The mud shall spread all over naked bodies of droopy boys!”

The Gren savages cheer again, as some disperse and go about doing what Ja-Ara has commanded them to do. Ja-Ara then turns to Elar-Jom. Antuss joins beside Elar-Jom.

JA-ARA
(to Elar-Jom) “What’s the matter with you, girl? Why look so moody? You’re not in need of another boy again! They’re all drabs here!”

ELAR-JOM
(bitterly) “I object to you to putting such a responsibility on me, Mum! Especially after the murder of Volum!”

ANTUSS
“My friend and comrade has died because of you, queen! Without him, I’m nothing!”

JOR-ELIV
“My dear Ja-Ara! Maybe we have done an injustice by [giving…]”

JA-ARA
(interrupts) “Shut up, all of you! I don’t know why you complain so much and despise me so much! Don’t you realise how important it is to get rid of these clean pigs! The sirens of war must be rung!”

ELAR-JOM
“But not so soon, Mum! We don’t even know why they’re here!”

JA-ARA
“We don’t need to know why they’re here! Their smelly presence is all that matters! Our mud shall beat them! The mud shall squash them!”

ELAR-JOM
“There has been no sign from our mud, Mum! It has not granted all our wishes!”

ANTUSS
“Maybe we should be serving something else instead of this earth that lies in the ground!”

JA-ARA
(angrily) “Blasphemers!” (yells) “BLASPHEMERS, ALL OF YOU!”

JOR-ELIV
“No emissary from the mud comes to us for which we have been continually asking for, Ja-Ara!”

JA-ARA
(savagely) “Don’t you start, husband! You can shut your stupid face up before I’ll bite you and eat you!”

SOR
(cries) “Hark, all of you! There! Before us! On the ground”

All the Gren look to see what Brother Sor has seen. The Gren chatter and mutter, as they become astonished and petrified.

JOR-ELIV
(amazed) “Why? It is a stream of mud!”

They watch as the ‘stream of mud’ slithers and rises up to form a shape.

ANTUSS
“Look! It’s rising!”

SOR
“It rises! It rises to our height!”

ELAR-JOM
“Could it be?!”

JA-ARA
“It is, you idiots! See a sign! The emissary has come! Our god!”

They watch, as the Mud Man forms before them and grovels. He reverts to human form and becomes Dr. Gun Nett. Everyone gasps once they see the Mud Man before them.

SOR
“It is a man! A man from the mud!”

Nett then turns his hand into mud before their eyes.

ANTUSS
“Not just a man from the mud! He is mud! See how he churns his hand into the muck he makes!”

JOR-ELIV
(amazed) “It sees it too, young man!”

Nett turns his hand back to normal, as he approaches the Gren.

DR. NETT
“Gren! Hear me! I…the Mud Man…speak!”

Ja-Ara steps forward to Gun Nett and bows before him.

JA-ARA
“May I kiss your muddy feet?”

DR. NETT
“You may.”

As Ja-Ara kneels down to him, Nett turns his feet into mud. Ja-Ara kisses his feet passionately.

ELAR-JOM
“Mum? What are you doing?! Your lips are going to get brown-like!”

Ja-Ara ignores her daughter, as she slobbers and looks up at Nett to praise him.

JA-ARA
“Thank you, our god! For coming to us in our time of need.” (Pause) “What is it you command us to do?”

DR. NETT
“I only ask you to serve me! To serve your god! To serve the Mud Man!”

Everybody bows down before the Mud Man, except Elar-Jom and Antuss who become suspicious. The Mud Man doesn’t care, as he is proud to be praised by the Gren.

SCENE #58 – EXT – TRINAS, JUNGLOS – DATE: 4198 – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, somewhere in Trinas, Billy and Nyssa run as they escape the pirates. They have been running for quite some time and are slowing their pace. Billy leads the way to see whether they’re heading in the right direction.

BILLY
“We must be getting to this ‘Dar-dar’ place Jason mentioned. I hope we’re not lost.”

Nyssa meanwhile lags behind suffering, as she stumbles forward.

NYSSA
(cries; desperately) “Please! Billy, stop a minute!”

Billy stops, as he turns back to see Nyssa leaning on a tree.

BILLY
(concerned) “Nyssa, are you alright? Am I going to fast?”

NYSSA
(exhausted) “No! I just can’t go on! I feel so weak and ill!”

BILLY
“I’m so sorry, Nyssa. I didn’t realise it had got worse!”

NYSSA
(panics) “I don’t know why this is happening to me! Why is it happening to me?!”

BILLY
(reassuringly) “Now don’t panic, Nyssa! Whatever you do, don’t panic! I’m here! I’ll look after you!” (Pause) “Come sit by here!”

Billy takes Nyssa to a place to sit down, as they sit on a huge log.

BILLY
“We should be well away from those pirates! Jason could have given them the slip already.”

As they sit, Nyssa suffers terribly as she groans and breathes deep.

BILLY
“You look terrible, Nyssa. Meaning no disrespect.”

NYSSA
(breathes deep) “None taken.”

BILLY
(gradually) “Hang on! Let me check your temperature!”

Nyssa breathes deeply, as Billy places his hand on her forehead.

NYSSA
“Well? Have I got a fever?”

BILLY
(puzzled) “It’s hard to tell! But the way you are, you must be getting the symptoms! I’m not sure if your head’s boiling! It doesn’t seem to be hot.”

NYSSA
“That insect bite did more than just make me weak. It’s drained my of energy!” (sighs) “I feel so hot! The planet’s climate…is making me feel worse!”

Nyssa then starts to take her jacket off, whilst she’s suffering.

BILLY
“What are you doing?”

NYSSA
“Taking my jacket off. I can’t stand the heat!”

Nyssa takes her jacket off and throws it to the ground. Billy goes down to pick it up, whilst Nyssa continues to suffer.

BILLY
“I’d say that bite did more than drain you, Nyssa. You look so pale and all in.”

NYSSA
“I’ve never known a sickness like this before. It’s getting hard for me to concentrate.”

BILLY
(worried) “Oh my poor Nyssa!” (Pause) “Here let me help you!”

Billy is about to take Nyssa’s hands, before she gasps in horror. She immediately pulls her hands away from Billy.

BILLY
“What is it?!”

NYSSA
(cries) “Keep away from me!”

BILLY
(bewildered) “Why, what have I done?”

NYSSA
“Don’t touch me, Billy!” (Pause) “Look!”

Billy looks and he too gasps in shock, as he sees what’s happened to Nyssa’s arm.

BILLY
(shocked) “Oh cripes! Your arm, Nyssa! It’s turning green…and looking horrible! What is it?!””

NYSSA
“Some sort of growth! Caused by the insect bite! And it’s spreading! Infecting most of my arm!”

BILLY
“Let me look at it, Nyssa. Perhaps I can do something…”

NYSSA
(cries) “Don’t touch me, Billy! I don’t want you to be infected!”

Billy does as Nyssa says and keeps away from her. Nyssa trembles in panic.

BILLY
(horrified) “I…I just don’t get it! I thought that ointment might have cured you! But it seems to have had the opposite effect!”

NYSSA
(distressed) “This is what those cruel savages intended for me, Billy! To make me suffer as I walk through this jungle!” (Pause) “I’ve been contaminated!”
