8. At The Wormhole

SCENE #77 – EXT – DOVER’S STREET, KELTON – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Meanwhile, Billy and Adams somehow have managed to get themselves from Watson Street to Dover’s Street. This apparently wasn’t the way they intended coming.

BILLY
“This can’t be right!”

ADAMS
(frustrated) “I’m sure it was ‘right’ when we should have turned!”

BILLY
“And I say we should have gone ‘left’!”

ADAMS
“Don’t be ridiculous! I know very well that ‘left’ would have taken us back the way we came to Watson Street. And we would have gone back to that cottage with the monster!”

BILLY
“No we wouldn’t! If we went ‘left’ we would have signposts that would have taken us back to Howard’s Road!”

ADAMS
(exasperated) “Oh this is ridiculous! No wonder Kelton’s changed! Everywhere we go we go around in circles!”

BILLY
“Now let’s not panic!” (Pause) “If we just calm down and rethink our steps we should be able to find our way back to Jack’s Corner. Then we’ll be onto the road to catch up with the Doctor and Nyssa.”

ADAMS
(mumbles) “Oh what’s the point? We might as well be…”

BILLY
(gasps) “Quick! Hide!”

ADAMS
“Why? What’s wrong?”

BILLY
“Just get behind that wall over there and hide!”

ADAMS
“Now see here…”

BILLY
“Come on!”

Billy and Adams run as they get behind some wall in the vicinity of Dover’s Street. They become calm once they are hiding, though Adams is quite perplexed.

ADAMS
“What do you think you’re playing at?”

BILLY
“Look!”

Adams looks in Billy’s direction to see what all the commotion is about. A small crowd of people walk on Dover’s Street. Nobody speaks, but their footsteps echo quite loudly.

ADAMS
“All I can see is a crowd of people! Nothing wrong in that is there, dear boy?”

BILLY
“A crowd of people who look like zombies?”

ADAMS
“Zombies?”

BILLY
“Look! They’re not speaking! And their faces! They look blank!” (Pause) “It’s like those people who were being controlled in ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’!”

ADAMS
“Hang on? Aren’t those the train drivers that were in charge of our train service from Huttle to Kelton?”

BILLY
“Yes, you’re right! It is them! Mr. Padbury and Mr. Watling! They’re walking beside the crowd on different sides.” (cries) “Quick! Duck down!”

Billy and Adams duck out of sight. A crowd of ‘passengers’, led by Thomas and Percy, march around the corner past the wall where Billy and Adams are hiding. Luckily however, they haven’t been spotted. Percy and Thomas take the crowd leading them forward, as they make their way back to the steam engine. The crowd soon is a far distance from Billy and Adams. Both sigh with relief.

ADAMS
(gasps) “Oh! The life of me!” (Pause) “Where do you suppose they’re going?”

BILLY
(thinks) “Well it’s my guess they heading back for the steam train.”

ADAMS
“But why would those people, in their right minds, be led by the train drivers?”

BILLY
“I don’t know.” (Pause) “Perhaps they did something to them. Putting them in a trance like?”

Billy walks on ahead as he follows after them.

ADAMS
(cries) “Oi! Where do you think you’re going?”

BILLY
“I’m going to follow them. Hopefully to the train station.”

ADAMS
“You can’t just follow them!”

BILLY
“Look! I don’t know what’s happening more than you! But I do know, that if we follow them, it will take us to the Doctor and Nyssa.”

ADAMS
(frustrated) “Oh really…”

BILLY
“Suppose you do as I say Mr. Adams and follow me! Now come on!”

Billy leads the way whilst Adams follows, groaning and mumbling.

ADAMS
“Mad, boy! You must be mad!”

They follow the crowd, as the crowd walk to the hills to the railway line.

SCENE #78 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Meanwhile, the Doctor and Nyssa have been walking for some time on the railway line, using the gadgets they have to track the source of the temporal barriers. They are quite a way from Kelton now as they are in the midst of English countryside. They are unsuccessful with results.

NYSSA
“I’m getting tired Doctor. I thought running would be hard work, but walking certainly seems to acquire the same pressure.”

DOCTOR
“Never mind about that Nyssa! Have you got anything?”

Nyssa checks the readings on her diode thyristor.

NYSSA
(gradually) “The diametric scans are inconclusive. The relativity hodographs are still generating levels of tacton radiation. But there’s still little accuracy in the data to pinpoint the source.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm! The frequency modulator’s scans are all over the place. We don’t seem to be getting closer to our target.”

They carry on in silence, using their scientific instruments.

NYSSA
(realises) “Wait a minute.”

DOCTOR
“What is it?”

NYSSA
(triumphant) “The diode thyristor has managed to make a connection. The threshold’s close by!”

The frequency modulator that the Doctor carries beeps frequently.

DOCTOR
(excited) “Yes! My frequency modulator agrees with you! Come on!”

The Doctor and Nyssa walk a bit further on as they manage to reach the source of the temporal barriers. They stop at a fair distance once they reach it. The instruments still keep registering results which are fed back to the Doctor and Nyssa.

NYSSA
“It’s here! The secular boundary’s definitely here!”

DOCTOR
“Splendid!” (Pause) “Now I’ll just take out from my pocket the TT Conductor.”

NYSSA
“Are you going to try to break a hole in the boundary?”

DOCTOR
(modestly) “Well just take a peak! Just want to see if there’s something on the other side.”

The Doctor takes out his TT Conductor. He places it at where the temporal boundary is. As he places it, he switches it on. A portal then slowly opens as the Doctor slightly adjusts the variance of the boundary. It makes a whirring noise as it does so. The Doctor raises the TT Conductor for a while before eventually raising it down and allowing the hole in space to close and the whirring sound stops.

DOCTOR
“Hmm, it’s definitely a wormhole! A section of space where two time-zones converge! A hole in the fabric of temporal reality!”

NYSSA
“Could you see what was on the other side of that wormhole?”

DOCTOR
“Only fragments. But if my theory is correct, according to the research and newspapers Billy gathered, what’s on the other side of that wormhole is a hundred years of Earth’s future.”

NYSSA
“Twenty-one sixty three!”

DOCTOR
“Right.”

NYSSA
“And somebody’s gone to a lot of trouble setting all this up! It’s certainly advanced technology that’s making all of this happen.”

DOCTOR
“I wonder. I just wonder who would capable of making such advances with temporal engineering.”

NYSSA
“Any more thoughts on any cultural societies from the Ciba galaxy?”

DOCTOR
(matter-of-factually) “Oh it’s definitely not someone from the Ciba galaxy I’m sure of it.”

NYSSA
“Then who else? The Time Lords?”

DOCTOR
“Possibly. Though there’s nothing to indicate that the technology generating the wormhole and the temporal anomaly is Gallifreyian. They would try to keep well away from interfering in planetary affairs.”

NYSSA
“There must be somebody capable of arranging all of this, Doctor. It seems so incredible for humans to achieve something on this scale.”

DOCTOR
“Oh humans are definitely out of the question when it comes to this sort of science.”

NYSSA
“Are you sure of that Doctor? Your history isn’t always accurate you know.”

DOCTOR
“Nonsense.”

NYSSA
“You’re like a Wikipedia rather than an encyclopaedia.”

The Doctor’s silent, as he ignores Nyssa’s rueful and wry remark.

SCENE #79 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
A fair distance away from the Doctor and Nyssa, the agent with his Zegor pet watches from a view on a hill. He sees the Doctor and Nyssa at the threshold of the wormhole they’ve discovered. He reports to his leaders as he talks into his communicator at his disposal. The Zegor whines and howls quietly to itself as it stands by next to his master.

VEGRON AGENT #1
(through communicator) “The man and the girl. They are at the wormhole! Shall I apprehend them?”

The agent listens for a few minutes as he is receiving instructions.

VEGRON AGENT #1
(through communicator) “Very well. I shall not intervene.”

The agent listens again.

VEGRON AGENT #1
(through communicator) “As you command.”

The agent switches off his communicator, before talking to his pet.

VEGRON AGENT #1
(to Zegor) “Our masters will deal with the man and the girl.” (Pause) “Come!”

The Zegor beast growls, as it follows his master down the hill away from the Doctor and Nyssa.

SCENE #80 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Meanwhile, the Doctor and Nyssa are contemplating about what to do next.

NYSSA
“It’s really dark now. Doctor. Almost night-time.”

DOCTOR
“And there’s no full moon to come out! Shame really. I always like a full moon.”

NYSSA
”We need to consider the options we have, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“I agree. We first have to catch up with Mr. Adams and Billy to see what they’ve discovered!”

NYSSA
“Yes. I do hope they’re alright. Especially Billy.”

DOCTOR
“Sometimes I wonder if we’re the victims of a set up like ‘the Ghost Train’.”

NYSSA
“Doctor if you’re about to indulge me with supernatural atrocities…”

DOCTOR
(interrupts) “No I don’t mean it like that. I mean ‘The Ghost Train’, a play written by Arnold Ridley, who used to play Pt. Godfrey in Dad’s Army apparently!”

NYSSA
“Sorry?”

DOCTOR
“Anyway, it was a story where passengers at a station were terrified out of their wits by a train that seemed to be haunted. In the end it was a set up in order to uncover train staff as criminal suspects.”

NYSSA
“You seem to like putting me off my ease.”

DOCTOR
“I wouldn’t imagine supernatural phenomenon aspects being attributed to this situation. It’s offbeat and absurd somehow.”

Just then there is a rumbling sound.

NYSSA
(concerned) “Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Yes. I hear it too, Nyssa.”

The rumbling grows louder and louder, as there is a vibration of the ground.

NYSSA
“The ground’s shaking from underneath our feet! What’s causing it?”

The rumbling increases in volume and rate, as there is the sound of cracking as if a wave is smashing onto a beach.

DOCTOR
(realises; panics) “Nyssa! Off the railroad! Get down!”

The Doctor and Nyssa run forward and fall to the ground landing in the grass. Just as they do so, there is a loud rippling effect, as something has come through the wormhole. It takes a while for what has come through the wormhole to enter. The rippling effect stops, and the Doctor and Nyssa breathe a sigh of relief.

NYSSA
“Are you alright, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes I’m fine. And you?”

NYSSA
“I’m alright.”

The two of them get on their feet and turn round to see what’s just come through the wormhole. It takes them a while to see the object in full view.

NYSSA
“What’s happened?”

DOCTOR
(amazed) “Well, what do you know!? A train carriage!”

NYSSA
“It must have come through the wormhole!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! Travelled all the way back from 2163 to 2063.”

NYSSA
“I wonder how that happened.”

A small rippling effect occurs, as two figures step into view through the wormhole.

DOCTOR
“Maybe we should ask them!”

NYSSA
(astonished) “Doctor. They’re wearing radiation suits.”

DOCTOR
“Must be for protection through the temporal barriers of the wormhole!” (calls to them) “Hello! I’m Doctor and this is my friend Nyssa. We were wondering if…”

Weapons are then loaded and raised by the figures.

NYSSA
“They’re carrying guns!”

DOCTOR
“Yes. And apparently they want us to get on aboard this carriage the way they’re shifting their guns.”

NYSSA
“Do we have a choice?”

DOCTOR
“Unless you want to ask them?”

A trigger is clicked from a weapon, aimed at the Doctor and Nyssa.

DOCTOR
“I think they’re insistent, don’t you?”

NYSSA
“Yes. I really wish we had met up with Billy.”

DOCTOR
“So do I? And Mr. Adams!”

NYSSA
“Yes and Mr. Adams.”

The Doctor and Nyssa make their way up to the train carriage, as they are being forced into it by the strange figures in suits.

SCENE #80 – EXT – EDGE OF KELTON – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
A few miles away from the Doctor and Nyssa, on the edge of Kelton, Billy and Mr. Adams are hiding to avoid being seen as they observe from a distance. They watch as Thomas and Percy are leading the crowd of ‘passengers’ of 2063 aboard the carriages of the train express.

BILLY
“See Mr. Adams I was right! They did come back to the steam train after all!”

ADAMS
“And it’s moved from Kelton station. To give the crowd a short walk from the village I expect. That’s considerate.”

BILLY
(apprehensive) “Depends on what you mean by ‘considerate’? You can see from their blank faces they have no choice in the matter.”

ADAMS
“Yes but what can we do? There’s no point in following them since we have no idea of where they’re going.”

BILLY
“I’ve got a sneaky suspicion that wherever the train drivers are taking them for whatever reason is not going to be good. I imagine the Doctor would want us to keep an eye on them.”

ADAMS
“What would you know boy about what the Doctor wants?”

BILLY
(determined) “I’m going to get to the back of the train and hide in the rear carriage. Are you coming?”

ADAMS
“What in heaven’s name do you want to do that for?”

BILLY
“So that wherever this train’s going we go to!”

ADAMS
“Are you not just doing this because you want to fulfil something in your career as a penniless photographer?”

BILLY
“Of course not!”

ADAMS
“Or maybe it’s because you fancy meeting up with that girl again!” (Pause) “In case you thought I’d hadn’t noticed!”

BILLY
(gradually) “Follow me! Come on!”

Billy and Adams quietly make their way to the back of the train as they attempt to get aboard the rear carriage. We hear Percy and Thomas speaking out loud to passengers in order to get them aboard the train, by saying things like…

PERCY
“Aboard the train at once!”

THOMAS
“The masters are insistent on our arrival.”

The passengers unwillingly get aboard the train, whilst Percy and Thomas make their way back to the steam engine.

SCENE #81 – INT – REAR CARRIAGE, TRAIN EXPRESS – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Billy and Adams manage to get into the rear carriage of the train without being detected. They are heard stepping up into the cab and pushing the door of the rear carriage open as they make to go inside. They shut the door behind them, as they enter the gloomy and dark interior of the rear carriage.

ADAMS
“Ah! Well we didn’t get spotted by those train drivers, did we! And here we are.”

BILLY
“I always wondered what they always did with placing huge luggage in the back of the train. They could do with a touch of decoration though. Not attractive as the dining carriages and lounges.”

ADAMS
“Never mind your decorations, boy. What are we to do now? We’ve managed to fulfil your little plan of getting in the back of the train, now we’ll be bored out of our wits now.”

BILLY
“We wait here until they set off.”

ADAMS
“And?”

BILLY
“Then we’ll get off once they stop. Let’s try and find somewhere to sit.”

Billy looks to sit down on the floor.

ADAMS
“How can you be so calm and sit on the floorboards knowing they’ll be uncomfortable? We don’t even know where we’re going.”

BILLY
“Believe me Mr. Adams. I’m as nervous as you are. But we’ve got to do something if it will mean our chances of getting back home so that you can get to your wife.”

ADAMS
(moans) “Oh alright! We’ll do it your way! But I don’t seem to think it will help with sorting this mess out.”

BILLY
(thinks) “I wonder how the Doctor and Nyssa are doing. Hope they’re alright!”

SCENE #82 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Back at the boundary of the wormhole on the railway line, the Doctor and Nyssa are being handcuffed to the rails of the train carriage that travelled back in time through the wormhole by the two figures in radiation suits. We hear the buzzing noise of the handcuffs being tightened around the Doctor and Nyssa’s wrists as they happen to be handcuffs with electronic locks.

DOCTOR
(to figures) “Look! There’s no need for you to handcuff us to these rails. Sonic handcuffs if I might add! We’re not going anywhere.”

NYSSA
(to figures) “Yes. We’re curious as to why these temporal wormholes have been placed in different places and times on this railway line. We’re intrigued as to who built the technology.”

DOCTOR
(to figures) “Exactly! So if you just take these handcuffs off us please, we would like to see your masters!”

The figures in suits do not respond or comply to the Doctor and Nyssa as they soon finish with handcuffing their hands on the rails.

DOCTOR
“I don’t think they want to take these handcuffs off us, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“They must be about to send us through the wormhole on this carriage. But how will they do it? And protect us from the tacton radiation?”

DOCTOR
“I don’t know. But whoever these two are, they must be in possession of some interesting technology involved with temporal stability.”

NYSSA
“Could you see what they looked like through the visors in their helmets?”

DOCTOR
“No. It was too dark to see. And obviously they wished to keep their identities private to which I respect. Though it’s a bit disconcerting since I want to know who’s responsible for this whole set-up.”

Nyssa then yelps with pain as one of the suited figures seems to be roughly searching her and the Doctor.

NYSSA
(annoyed) “Hey! Stop touching me! This dress is rather new and special!”

But the figure obviously doesn’t comply as it keeps searching Nyssa and prods at her rather hard.

NYSSA
(to Doctor) “What are they doing, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“They’re obviously searching us for anything we’ve got in our possession.”

The Doctor too feels prodded about by the other figure, who eventually takes some things belonging to him.

DOCTOR
(frustrated) “And taking away our possessions too. Such as my TT Conductor. My frequency modulator and my torch. Not to mention my stick of celery.”

NYSSA
“And they’ve taken my diode thyristor.”

DOCTOR
(to figures) “I hope that there’s more to your lives than just travelling around in radiation suits, handcuffing people and taking their valuable possessions away! It must be quite boring.”

NYSSA
“I don’t think you should antagonize them, Doctor!”

The figures eventually step down from the train carriage after finishing dealing with the Doctor and Nyssa. They walk a few metres away.

NYSSA
“What are they doing now?”

A force-field is then activated.

DOCTOR
“They’ve set up a force-field, Nyssa. Around the carriage. Wanting to make sure that we don’t escape probably.”

NYSSA
“I don’t see how we can escape with these handcuffs!”

Once the figures are a few metres away, we hear them setting up a device on the ground. It takes a while for them to actually set it up.

NYSSA
“What’s that device that’s in one of their hands? It looks complex!”

DOCTOR
“It does look complex doesn’t it?” (Pause) “It seems to me to be some kind of temporal feedback generator of some kind.”

Once the device has been set up, one of the figures presses a few switches to turn it on. The device soon emits a loud frequency that echoes in the distance of the hills. The Doctor and Nyssa watch with fascination, as the device seems to be doing its work.

NYSSA
“I imagine they’re going to try and send us back through the wormhole on this train carriage.”

DOCTOR
“Yes Nyssa. I believe you’re right. I only wish I can say it will be a pleasant experience.”

SCENE #83 – INT – STEAM ENGINE CAB, TRAIN EXPRESS – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Meanwhile, the train drivers, Thomas and Percy are in their steam engine cab as they make ready to set about their next task. They are still under hypnotic control.

THOMAS
“Percy!”

PERCY
“Thomas!”

THOMAS
“Our masters instruct us to take the train with our passengers to their new destination.”

PERCY
“I understand.”

THOMAS
“We are to make for Thursdan. Full steam ahead, Percy.”

PERCY
“Aye! Full steam ahead!”

Percy stokes more coal into the engine furnace, whilst Thomas pulls the steam engine whistle and makes the train to go forward.

SCENE #84 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE,UK, EARTH – AUTUMN 2063
The steam engine sluggishly makes it way forward as it chugs on the railway line making to head for Thursdan. The atmosphere is still dull and foreboding as the train makes its way on the track heading for its destination, pulling the carriages with hypnotised passengers onboard.

SCENE #85 – INT – REAR CARRIAGE, TRAIN EXPRESS – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Billy and Adams, hiding in the rear carriage, are now anxious and apprehensive about the train now already moving and making its way towards its destination.

ADAMS
“Well! Now we’re on the move again!”

BILLY
“Yes. I just hope this decision of mine will be well worth it in the end.”

ADAMS
“It’d better be! For all we know we could be dead. And a fine choice you made for getting us all killed!”

Billy contemplates this situation as he tries to calm down and sit back on the train waiting for whatever’s going to happen.

SCENE #86 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – AUTUMN 2063
Meanwhile the generator of the two strange figures still keeps on making the high frequency, as the Doctor and Nyssa handcuffed to the train carriage awaits for whatever’s about to happen. Suddenly  the train carriage moves forward with the Doctor and Nyssa on it.

NYSSA
(astonished) “We’re moving forward, Doctor! The carriage’s moving forward!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! And it’s about to enter that wormhole behind us!”

NYSSA
(struggles) “I can’t break my handcuffs, Doctor! They’re so tight to the rails!”

DOCTOR
“Hold on Nyssa! We’re about to go through the wormhole!”

The Doctor and Nyssa hold onto the rails of the carriage as it makes its way through the wormhole. There is a loud sizzling rippling sound effect as the carriage breaks through the boundary of the wormhole and they pass through. Once the carriage has gone through, the generator eventually stops working and the wormhole stops sizzling.

The two figures are silent throughout the transfer of the carriage into the wormhole taking place. Another period of silence takes place, before the distant sounds of a train whistling occur as the steam train express approaches, making its way for Thursdan, getting closer and closer.

SCENE #87 – EXT – VOID – N/A
It is unclear what’s happening with the Doctor and Nyssa, but they are now travelling through in a void as the train makes its journey through time. Their voices echo across the void time waves and dimensions and they both speak in slow motion.

NYSSA
(slow motion) “Doctor! We’re travelling through the time stream of the temporal anomaly!”

DOCTOR
(slow motion) “Hold on Nyssa! Just keep holding on! We should be arriving soon!”

NYSSA
(slow motion) “But where though?”

DOCTOR
(slow motion) “Not where Nyssa! When?”

They keep on travelling through the void, as the sound of waves crashing is heard and the carriage jerks very violently compared to the jerks that had happened to the train service from nineteen sixty-three to twenty sixty-three.

SCENE #88 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
The train carriage eventually comes out of the wormhole as it arrives on the other side of the railway side in the English Countryside but at a different time. On the train carriage, the Doctor and Nyssa are shaken up from their experience through the void but are apparently unharmed.

DOCTOR
(shouts loudly) “We’ve arrived Nyssa! We’ve arrived!”

It zooms along the railway line for quite a way as it is heard shrieking on the rail tracks in order to get a firm brake after being pushed by the physical force of the generator from the other side of the wormhole.

SCENE #89 – EXT – ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE – DAY – SUMMER 2163
After zooming on the railway track for quite a while, the train carriage slowly comes to a halt as it is now a fair distance away from the temporal wormhole. The Doctor and Nyssa remain onboard, still handcuffed to the carriage rails as they stop. The two of them look around to see where they are and getting familiar with their surroundings.

DOCTOR
“Good thing the force-field protected us!”

NYSSA
“Whoever those aliens were they were determined to keep us alive.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Though not for very good reasons I suspect.”

NYSSA
“Is this what you saw through the wormhole when you opened it?”

DOCTOR
“Oh yes. And if my suspicions are correct we’ve travelled one hundred years in Earth’s future. The year is 2163!”

NYSSA
(unconvinced) “You seem very sure of that, Doctor.”

DOCTOR
“Oh I am sure! I can taste the air to tell by it!”

NYSSA
“The air?”

DOCTOR
“By this time, Earth was at one of its bleak periods of history. The atmosphere was polluted by high toxins and terminal fumes. Hence why the sky is so red and filled with black clouds.”

NYSSA
“I thought that was the sunset!”

DOCTOR
“Only on the face of it! Earth history by the 22nd century wasn’t as pleasant as other decades or centuries. So much war occurring. Too many new elements polluting the atmosphere. This hungry little world was losing its appetite for preservation. And it seems that all hope is lost.”

NYSSA
“I imagine someone like Billy wouldn’t like to live here. I’m glad he’s back a hundred years ago for the sake of it.”

DOCTOR
“But why all this set-up with the trains!” (thinks; impatiently) “Come on Doctor! Think! Think! Why would aliens want to set up train journeys through different time zones to lead to a time and place like this? What’s it all for?”

As the Doctor ponders on his worries, there is the sound of a train whistle that seems faded but very close at the same time.

NYSSA
“Doctor! That was a train whistle!”

DOCTOR
(worried) “Yes.” (Pause) “Oh no!”

NYSSA
(concerned) “What is it?”

DOCTOR
“Look!”

They both look as they can see in the far distance the approach of the steam express as it exits from the temporal wormhole and arrives in the English countryside of 2163. The train whistles as it chugs on the railway track and makes its approach towards the Doctor and Nyssa.

NYSSA
(horrified) “The train express! It’s come through the wormhole!”

DOCTOR
“Yes! And we’re on the train carriage stuck on the railway line ready to be crashed in the face by the steam engine.

They both tug at their handcuffs to try and break free but with little success.

NYSSA
(panics) “It’s no good Doctor! I can’t get my handcuffs to break free. If only we had something to break off the electronic lock!”

DOCTOR
(panics) “Yes well we haven’t got anything have we Nyssa!”

The train whistles again as it is heard coming closer and closer to them on the railway line.

NYSSA
(panics) “Doctor! The train’s coming straight for us!”

The Doctor and Nyssa are in great peril as they watch in anticipation at the train’s approach, wondering if they’ll survive to see another day.

    Hi Tim

I really enjoyed reading Part Two of The Railway of Time. You’ve put together a great second episode here, as the story is progressing at a good pace to allow for plenty of narrative to unfold, while keeping the tension and the uncertainty as to what is going on really high.

The characters are well written, and very well rounded.

I’m intrigued as to how one character (no spoilers!) has turned up in 2063 from 1963 and yet is only 93 years old! That’s very intriguing!

I really like the character of Mr Adams – he’s very funny, in his concerns and worries for himself.

I laughed at the outcome of their visit to the café! That was very funny.

And what are Thomas and Percy up to!?

All this time travel is very intriguing; what’s up with the Tardis? And who did Nyssa see on the hill?

What a cliffhanger! Looking forward to Part Three very much; I’m really intrigued to see what happens next.

    Great stuff, Tim.

      Hi Leigh!

Wow! I’m amazed you’ve read ‘Part Two’ already. I’ve only posted this episode yesterday. Very amazed and pleased that you’re still enjoying this story and that you find the tension and uncertainty in this story very high. I’m really pleased about this.

I’m glad you like the characters featured in this story.

Ah! Yes! You spotted that, did you? About…a certain character…being 93 years old from 1963 to 2063. Well done! That will be revealed in ‘Part Three’. I promise you. 😀

I’m very pleased you like Mr Adams in this story. I enjoyed writing him. Were you surprised or shocked by his ‘fate’ in Chapter 7 of this story?

What do you make of the character of Billy Walker? Do you like him?

Wow! Thank you that you laughed at the outcome of the Doctor; Nyssa; Billy and Adams’ visit to the cafe. I’m glad that was a moment you found really funny.

Ah yes! With Thomas and Percy, you have to find that out in the next episode. 😀

I’m glad you find the time travel stuff intriguing. Yes, with the TARDIS…now, that’s going to be answered in ‘Part Four’. By the way, did you mean the Doctor (not Nyssa) seeing himself on the hill? If yes, that gets answered in ‘Part Four’ too.

Glad you like the cliff-hanger. That is meant to build up the tension for the Doctor and Nyssa in the next episode.

‘Part Three’ will be avaiable to read on Monday. Very pleased you’re enjoying ‘The Railway of Time’, Leigh. Hope you continue to enjoy more.

Many thanks for your lovely comments. Tim. 🙂

Oh, yes, I’m really enjoying my read.

Aha! I picked up a clue! Very good! I shall be most interested to see where that goes.

I’d have to admit, I had wondered about what the Doctor and Mr Adams might find in the cemetery; but as to why Mr Adams would end up in Kelton, that’s a tricky thing that we haven’t found out yet; I’m sure it will be interesting to find out!

I do like the character of Billy Walker; I like that he’s not too thrown by all this new stuff that he’s found himself entangled in, and he’s happy to have an adventure; I like that he has taken Mr Adams along with him.

I did find the cafe scene really funny; typical Fifth Doctor, I thought!

Oh yes, of course, I did mean the Doctor seeing himself on the top of the hill. I can see this is all going to get very timey-wimey, isn’t it? But it’s very intriguing!

I’m looking forward to reading Part Three, Tim, it’s a really great story and I’m really enjoying the read.

Thanks Leigh for your very kind comments. Things are going to get more dangerous for the Doctor; Nyssa; Billy and Adams in ‘Part Three’.

I’m glad you think what I’m writing is right for the Fifth Doctor era in ‘The Railway of Time’.

Yes Billy is clearly in awe by what’s going on as well as being a little nervous, which I wanted to balance right in his character in this story. I also wanted Billy to have a real interest in Nyssa as well as the Doctor. What did you think of Billy’s reaction to seeing the inside of the TARDIS for this first time?

I enjoyed writing how Billy takes Adams with him and clearly putting him in his place. 😀

I know we moved on from 1963 to 2063, but what did you think of the historical content I put in about railways and Dr Beeching?

When you read these episodes, do you play the title music at the beginning and end of each episode? 😀

Hope you enjoy ‘Part Three’ when it’s available tomorrow.

    Thanks.

    Tim. 🙂

    Thanks, Tim.

I can tell you’ve had great fun writing all these characters, and the tricky situations they’re finding themselves in. I do get a definite feel for the era in the writing, and the situation; the context and the actions all feel very in the right place for the era you’re writing for.

I think Billy is a really well written character, and I like that he takes it all in his stride as a new experience. I liked his reaction to seeing the inside of the Tardis, and that the Doctor got a bit tetchy about it – always a funny moment, when someone comes in there for the first time.

I knew something about Dr Beeching and the railways, but not an awful lot, so it was interesting to see how much a part of everyday life the trains were, and then how they so quickly became superseded with private vehicles.

No, I haven’t been playing the theme music – good idea though, perhaps I should!

Looking forward to getting on to Part Three.

      Many thanks Leigh.

Yes I certainly enjoyed the experience of writing a ‘Doctor Who’ story first time and enjoying fleshing out the characters. I certainly did my research in watching plenty of ‘Doctor Who’s with Peter and Sarah as the Doctor and Nyssa as well as listening to the Big Finish audios. And with a dose of ‘Oh Doctor Beeching’ to help me into the railway spirit of things. 😀

With Billy, I felt that his reaction to the TARDIS had to be real and I thought it’d be funny if Nyssa and the Doctor realised Billy wasn’t in the console room with them before he came back in. His line “It’s an awfully big police box!” was something inspired from Lucy’s first experience of Narnia in ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’.

I went to a train museum a year afterwards in York for a holiday, and it was interesting exploring of the history about why steam locomotives were converted into electrical power and how Beeching got involved.

Thanks again, Leigh. I’m so pleased my story has impressed you so far. Tim. 🙂

This line had me in hysterics – “You’re like a Wikipedia rather than an encyclopedia.”

This is such a gripping read, loving the interplay between Mr Adams & Billy while the Doctor & Nyssa now are in a right ole pickle.

I’ve read writers find the Fifth Doctor difficult to write for but you have written his incarnation superbly, along with Nyssa & created great secondary characters, Billy is so likeable & Mr Adams is one of those characters we love to loathe.

I can absorb the atmosphere, the sounds of the trains & hear this story in my mind like a Big Finish audio.

Quality storytelling Tim, I’m hooked & can’t wait to see what happens next.

Thanks Timelord Simon. Very pleased you’re enjoying my story and hope you’ll continue to enjoy more in the next two episodes.

Glad you can hear the story in your mind and that the atmosphere and trains help.

Yes I find that a surprise that many writers find the Fifth Doctor’s difficult to write for. I suppose many consider him a weak and flat character to write for out of the Doctors. But I like how his vulnerability; seriousness and politeness hide a fierce intelligence underneath. I also wanted to add the humour of the Fifth Doctor as well in my stories. Seeing the similarities in both Fifth and Tenth Doctors in ‘Time Crash’ by Steven Moffat and hearing Peter Davison’s Doctor with Sarah Sutton’s Nyssa in the Big Finish audios helped me to write for him.

I’m glad you like how I write for the characters of Nyssa and Billy, as well as Mr Adams. I enjoyed writing the balance of comedy and volatile behaviour in Adams, and hope I haven’t made too cliche in the way I wrote him for this story.

Glad you like the interplay between Billy and Adams in this chapters and how the Doctor and Nyssa get into trouble by the end of this story.

Oh good. I’m glad you like that line I gave Nyssa to the Doctor about being a ‘Wikipedia’ instead of an ‘encyclopedia’. Glad you found that funny.

Thanks for your kind comments, Simon. Hope you continue to enjoy more of this story. Tim. 🙂
