‘The Space Hotel’, Part One, Prologue

Prologue

SCENE #1 – EXT – HUTTLE VILLAGE – NIGHT – SPRING 1963
The story begins in Huttle, 1963 after the events of ‘The Railway of Time’. It’s night-time and the village is quiet and peaceful. In the village, Billy and Nyssa walk back together to the TARDIS, where it was left off in ‘The Railway of Time: Part Four’.

NYSSA
“Thank you very much for this evening, Billy. It was lovely! I really did enjoy it!”

BILLY
“That’s alright. I’m sorry this evening wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. I mean the cinema’s okay. But it’s not as classy and glamorous as the dance floor.”

NYSSA
“Well it was an interesting experience – the cinema.”

BILLY
“Did you enjoy ‘I Could Go On Singing’?”

NYSSA
“Yes I did! That Judy Garland person certainly sounded good.”

BILLY
“You should see some of her earlier work. She’s certainly looked great in the old days.”

NYSSA
“I must say the film was definitely primitive.”

BILLY
“Hey! Cinema keeps improving. One day it will advance!”

NYSSA
“I’m sure it will.”

They then stop outside the TARDIS.

BILLY
“I’m pleased you enjoyed yourself!”

NYSSA
“Oh I did. I really did!”

BILLY
(saddened) “I only wish we could do something like this again!” (Pause) “Thank you for making today…well special.”

NYSSA
“We really appreciate you helping us out with the railway. It was very noble of you.”

Moment of silence.

NYSSA
“Do you want to come inside and say goodbye to the Doctor?”

BILLY
“Oh I’d like that! Yes!”

NYSSA
“Come in then.”

Nyssa opens the TARDIS doors with Billy following her, as they go inside.

SCENE #2 – INT – TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – N/A
The TARDIS interior doors open, as Nyssa and Billy enter to find the Doctor working underneath the console. He mutters in frustration whilst working.

NYSSA
“Doctor? Is everything alright?”

DOCTOR
(reacts in pain, to TARDIS) “Stop doing that, old girl!”

The Doctor then looks up and realises.

DOCTOR
“Ah, Nyssa! You’re back!”

NYSSA
“What’s the matter with the console?”

DOCTOR
(reassuringly) “Nothing to worry about. Just upgrading the cryptographic-thermodynamic-drone cones. Our jumps to different time zones seem to have drained the TARDIS’ fluid links completely!” (Pause; realises) “Oh! I see we have a visitor!”

BILLY
“Just came to say goodbye.”

DOCTOR
“Goodbye? Yes, of course. Did you both enjoy yourselves?”

NYSSA
“Yes Doctor, we did! We went to the cinema!”

BILLY
“The dance wasn’t on tonight. So we had to go to the cinema instead.”

NYSSA
“But it was invigorating.”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Well forgive me for being out of order, but cinema is just a place for people to have dreams and illusions. And I definitely see through those illusions.”

BILLY
“Hey! At least the entertainment’s good!”

DOCTOR
“Yes of course.”

NYSSA
“Did you enjoy your cricket match?”

DOCTOR
“Yes I did! Our side won! Two hundred and seventeen to ninety-nine! That has definitely been an improvement since the last time I played cricket!”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
(saddened) “Well, I suppose you two will be leaving now.”

NYSSA
“It happens when you’re with the Doctor, Billy.”

DOCTOR
“Always moving on.”

BILLY
“Will you two be coming back here? I mean back to nineteen sixty-three?”

NYSSA
“We can never tell. The TARDIS has a mind of its own.”

DOCTOR
“But it is rather unlikely.”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
“Oh well. Thanks for everything anyway. You’ve made me see things in a new light.”

DOCTOR
“Not at all, Billy. It’s been great to have met you!”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
“Well. Goodbye, Doctor.”

The Doctor and Billy shake hands.

DOCTOR
“Goodbye, Billy.”

BILLY
“Bye, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
“Goodbye, Billy. Thanks for the date!”

BILLY
“My pleasure.”

Billy and Nyssa hug each other. Billy then turns and is about to leave the TARDIS. He stops in his tracks, reluctant to leave. He turns back to the Doctor and Nyssa again.

BILLY
“Do you two know where you are going?”

NYSSA
“No. Travelling in the TARDIS certainly has its surprises.”

DOCTOR
“And whatever Nyssa says, I do have a firm grasp of controlling the ship wherever and whenever it goes!”

BILLY
(gradually) “Well. Do try and not get into too much trouble.” (Pause) “Take care now.”

Billy is about to head for the exit again, before the TARDIS doors suddenly close on him in an instant. This prevents Billy to leave, as he turns back to the Doctor and Nyssa.

BILLY
(concerned) “Uh, Doctor? Did you just shut the doors?”

There is a loud explosion, as the TARDIS lurches forward and backward. The TARDIS dematerialisation process takes place. The Doctor, Nyssa and Billy stumble about off-balance in the console room, as the TARDIS takes off without warning.

DOCTOR
(flabbergasted) “What?! What?!”

The Doctor reaches for the console, as he presses a number of buttons and switches. Nyssa takes a deep breath, as she holds onto the console.

NYSSA
“Doctor, what’s happening?! What are you doing?!”

DOCTOR
“It wasn’t me! I didn’t do anything!”

The TARDIS lurches forward again as the time rotor goes wild, up and down. The Doctor presses buttons and switches on the console to find out what’s going on.

NYSSA
“Doctor? Could this be Sinroth? Have we entered another temporal anomaly?”

DOCTOR
(sharply) “I don’t know! Why the TARDIS should be taking off like this, I don’t know!”

BILLY
“Can’t I go outside?”

DOCTOR
(sharply) “No you can’t, Billy! The TARDIS is way away from Earth by now! At least I think it is!”

The Doctor checks the console and presses more buttons and switches.

DOCTOR
“Yes! The temporal tracker has confirmed we’re now journeying through the time vortex!”

NYSSA
“But why? Where’s the TARDIS taking us?”

DOCTOR
(worried) “I don’t know. But we’ll soon find out!”

The trio hold on for dear life, as the TARDIS goes out of control.

  2. Thanks Timelord Simon. Very pleased you enjoyed my prologue to ‘The Space Hotel’. I’m glad you like how I’ve managed to keep Billy inside the TARDIS before he leaves.

I’m pleased you like how this story continues on from ‘The Railway of Time’ as I wanted to establish that feeling between the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy and how Billy feels reluctant on leaving the TARDIS and saying goodbye to the Doctor and Nyssa.

I hope you enjoy what’s come in ‘The Space Hotel’.

    Thanks. Tim. 🙂
