7. Disturbing Discoveries

SCENE #55 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
In the River Manipulator Room, the secret compartment door is tugged and pushed from the inside. Eventually the door swings open, and Werna and the Doctor step into the River Manipulator Room.

WERNA
“Here we are, Doctor. This is the River Manipulator Room! Take a look around! I’ll check this compartment door is shut before someone comes.”

Werna checks the secret compartment door is closed, whilst the Doctor looks on.

DOCTOR
“Interesting.”

WERNA
“What is?”

DOCTOR
“That secret compartment we just came out of. The door’s the same one that Billy fell in when he; Nyssa and I found this room on arrival here.”

WERNA
“Is it?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. Fortunately we were able to get Billy out of there. But I could see there was a cavity inside. I wondered where it would lead to. Now I know it links to the rebels’ hideout as a tunnel.”

WERNA
“Did you get Billy out of there before the Fosters found you, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. And before the Melkurs found us too.”

WERNA
“Good. I wouldn’t like to think our cover got blown if the Fosters and the Melkurs had seen you and Nyssa rescuing Billy from this compartment. The secret of me and my friends’ hideout would have been discovered.”

DOCTOR
“I’m sure it would have.”

WERNA
(gradually) “Well, it’s closed now. That’s a good thing. Let me show you everything in here, Doctor.”

Werna guides the Doctor around the River Manipulator Room. They start to inspect all the technology.

WERNA
“Here it is, Doctor. The River Manipulator itself.”

DOCTOR
“Fascinating. It’s not at all like the Source Manipulator on Traken! This looks more like a machine gun than a scientific device used to manipulate the River.”

WERNA
“This device connects the manufactured tributaries together with the River, Doctor. It’s also what Sarumane uses to regenerate the water particles to keep it flowing in the River.”

DOCTOR
“And what Sarumane uses to ‘mentally communicate’ with the Tree via technological means, I suppose.”

WERNA
“Yes! See these instruments here beside the River Manipulator controls. They’re meant to channel psychic thoughts from the River so that Sarumane can receive mental contact with the Tree. But whether he actually is able to communicate with the Tree is a matter of some debate as your friend Nyssa seems to suggest.”

DOCTOR
“Hmm, I see.” (Pause) “Tell me, Werna! Why do these river tributaries need to be made out of metal? Surely you have your own natural tributaries to start from one of the river-banks to the next.”

WERNA
“Mother and father say it’s the natural resources surrounding the river that are unreliable. They shouldn’t be tampered with. Personally, I think its best they use manufactured tributaries to control the flow of water in the river, Doctor. It doesn’t mean digging up the ground to insert the control panels into the river itself.”

The Doctor meanwhile checks the instruments connected to the manufactured river tributary for a moment.

DOCTOR
“Hmm. I can see how Sarumane does it. Monitoring the rate of flow; the density and the weight value of the river. Even the links to the power terminals for lighting; heating and electricity are maintained.”

WERNA
“It was never meant to be this big, Doctor. Like I told you, it started off being a small thing. I wished it had remained so.”

DOCTOR
“If I’m right about Sarumane, as a scientist, he’s never satisfied with the answers he finds. It’s the same for all scientists, Werna. We always seek the truth and knowledge of everything that goes on in the universe. When we think we know everything, we don’t. So we keep on trying…” (distracted) “Hello. This is unusual.”

WERNA
(curious) “What is?”

DOCTOR
“There’s a displacement reading on this terminal. It’s showing the rate of radiation on Riverloth. It’s increasing.”

WERNA
“Radiation? Radiation from what?”

DOCTOR
“I don’t know. An external power supply? Something that’s been kept at bay. Like something is trapped somewhere. It wants to be let out.”

WERNA
(aghast) “What does Sarumane think he’s playing at then? I always knew him to be shifty!”

DOCTOR
(intrigued) “Hold on! There’s a labelled control here next to this monitor, Werna. It says…” (reads) “Induction Chamber Display.”

WERNA
“Induction Chamber Display? What does that mean, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
(gradually) “Let’s take a look, shall we?”

The Doctor presses a button. The screen activates and soon the Doctor and Werna become horrified by what they see.

WERNA
(horrified) “By the Tree! What’s this? What’s going on here?!”

DOCTOR
“They seem to be asleep. All those people!”

WERNA
“Asleep? They’ve got wires connected to their bodies. They must be drained of blood through those tubes they’ve got in their necks.”

DOCTOR
“It is horrible, isn’t it?! They must be somewhere else in another part of this building! Underground, perhaps.”

WERNA
“This seems to be the work of vampires!”

DOCTOR
“No, Werna! I’m afraid it isn’t as straightforward as that.”

WERNA
“How can you be so sure, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“I’ve met vampires before and know what they look; smell and sound like. This work is being conducted on another level.” (Pause) “There’s something else going on here. I just know it!”

Just then, footsteps approach.

WERNA
(panics) “Doctor! Someone’s coming!”

DOCTOR
“Quick, Werna! Let’s hide!”

Werna takes the Doctor with her, as they duck down into a hiding place in the River Manipulator Room. The door then opens as Sarumane and Bonncere enter.

BONNCERE
(uneasily) “That was rather underhanded of you, Sarumane. To tell a lie like that to the Consuls.”

SARUMANE
“We do need tributes, Bonncere. Especially for the Tree; the river and us!”

BONNCERE
“But does that mean more sacrifices of people drained of blood! I’m getting sick of it, Sarumane!”

SARUMANE
“I warned you about questioning my authority, Bonncere! Don’t make me angry should you be breaking your word.”

BONNCERE
“I’m sorry, Sarumane. I can’t help it. I’m getting so anxious about this business. I don’t know if I can take much more.”

SARUMANE
“Don’t fret yourself, Bonncere. All will be restored to normal once we’ve achieved our objectives.”

BONNCERE
“Well, I hope you’re right on this! I just…”

As Bonncere speaks, something falls to the floor.

SARUMANE
(interrupts; hushes) “Ssh! Silence for a moment!”

BONNCERE
(confused) “What is it?! What’s the matter?!”

SARUMANE
“Someone is here with us, Bonncere! Someone in hiding.” (Pause; gradually; calls) “Right! Whoever you are, whether it’d be one or two of you! Come out at once!”

Moment of silence. No response.

SARUMANE
“I’m waiting.”

Still no response.

SARUMANE
“I should warn you, I have the power to command the Melkurs to come to me. I can summon them here should you wish to die by their eyes. Come on. Give yourself up!”

Still no response.

SARUMANE
“Right! Have it your own way!” (calls out loud) “Melkurs!”

DOCTOR
(hurriedly) “No, no! That won’t be necessary. We’re here.” (to Werna) “Werna, come on out!”

WERNA
(protests) “But Doctor!”

DOCTOR
“Come on, Werna! Up you come.”

The Doctor helps Werna up, as they stand up from their hiding place.

BONNCERE
(shocked) “It’s him, Sarumane! It’s the Doctor! And it’s the Consuls’ daughter, Werna!”

SARUMANE
(gleefully) “Yes, Bonncere. Yes. This should make things…very interesting!” (Pause) “Summon the Fosters in here, Bonncere!”

With a groan, the Doctor and Werna know that they’ve been caught.

SCENE #56 – EXT – WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, with Nyssa and Billy, they arrive at the waterfall area with Saloga and Milgi. The water pours down like rain through the waterfall into the River. All is calm and serene.

SALOGA
“Here it is, Lady Nyssa; Mr Billy. This is our waterfall on Riverloth on the outskirts of Cordow.”

MILGI
“One of its kind, in fact. This is a significant part of the natural resources provided via the river from the Tree. It’s also a power point for Sarumane’s work with the River Manipulator.”

NYSSA
“It’s very beautiful. I can almost feel the water in my hands.”

BILLY
“It certainly is. I feel like I want to take a shower in that waterfall.”

SALOGA
“We’d advise you not to go anywhere near the waterfall, you two. The current through that waterfall is dangerous. The forces of the river make it unstable every time you make contact with it.”

MILGI
“It also erodes the rocks and the earth quickly every time you step out towards the waterfall.”

NYSSA
“There you are, Billy. You heard Saloga and Milgi. Don’t take a shower in that waterfall!”

BILLY
“Just because I felt like wanting to take a shower in the waterfall, doesn’t mean I’m actually going to, does it Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I don’t know, Billy. I don’t know you that well yet.”

BILLY
(distracted) “No. No you don’t.”

SALOGA
(interrupts) “Come, Nyssa; Billy. Let us show you where the manipulator controls for this waterfall are. It’s this way.”

Saloga and Milgi lead the way, as they make for the side of the waterfall. Nyssa and Billy climb up after Saloga and Milgi, as they reach the manipulator controls on a hill.

SALOGA
“Here it is! The manipulator controls.”

MILGI
“The readings of the flow of water are fed back and measured in the River Manipulator Room. It looks crude, but it’s very effective.”

NYSSA
“Let’s take a look.””

Nyssa and Billy approach, with Saloga and Milgi beside them. They inspect the manipulator controls of the waterfall.

NYSSA
“Well, Billy? What do you make of these controls?”

BILLY
(gradually) “I’m sorry, Nyssa. I can’t make head or tail of them.” (to Saloga; Milgi) “What are these controls for anyway?”

SALOGA
“They’re to manipulate the flow of water in the waterfall. Whether Riverloth needs more power or there’s a need for the River to be shut down, the controls for the waterfall are here to do that.”

MILGI
“It’s just in case something happens like an invasion to our planet. We need to shut down all the available resources or to power them up on a defence level.”

SALOGA
“The waterfall has always been here on Riverloth. To churn the power supply and for it to go back to the Tree to start the process all over again. But since the Consuls allowed the addition of the River Manipulator and its control ports around the area, things have changed.”

BILLY
“What do you make of all this then, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “It seems to be fuelled by some kind of bio-engine hidden deep within the planet’s crust. Back on Traken, the Source would have sustained its power like a sun. Here, it seems to be applying the same principle. Except the water radiates the sun through the waterfall to generate the power it requires.”

BILLY
“You mean…like if the sun was out now… I mean, it’s not shining brightly at the moment…but if it was out, the water in the waterfall would still be generating the power it needs to make the sun shine brightly.”

NYSSA
“Something like that, yes. It’s like solar paneled generators, except on a natural scale. It’s very clever.” (to Saloga; Migli) “The science you have on Riverloth is so remarkable, Saloga; Milgi. It seems to be more natural than technological.”

SALOGA
(grimly) “Unfortunately the technology is taking over the nature of our science, Lady Nyssa. Hence why we’re at this crisis point.”

MILGI
“It must be stopped! Whatever it takes, the crisis must be stopped! Nature should be reverted back to normal to save our planet from technology.”

NYSSA
“Very well put, Milgi. The Doctor; Billy and I can help to put that right.”

BILLY
(fascinated) “Hang on. This is interesting.”

NYSSA
(puzzled) “What is, Billy? What have you found?”

BILLY
“This! It’s an emblem design on these manipulator controls. It looks similar to the one I saw on that compartment door I fell in when we were in the River Manipulator Room on our arrival on Riverloth.”

NYSSA
“Are you sure?”

BILLY
“I’m positive. I remember it looking like half a man in a half-circle or something.” (Pause) “But…something’s not right about this one?”

NYSSA
“Oh? What is it that’s not right about this emblem, Billy?”

BILLY
“It seems flipped in reverse compared to the one I saw in the River Manipulator Room.” (Pause) “Hang on! I’ve got to take a picture of this. Where’s my camera?”

Billy fumbles in his pockets to search for his camera.

MILGI
“You have a…what?”

SALOGA
“A camera? What is that?”

Billy takes out his camera from a pocket.

BILLY
“This is a camera, you two. Always handy to have.”

Billy then concentrates as he uses his camera to take a photo of the emblem. Nyssa meanwhile checks the waterfall as she steps forward towards it.

MILGI
(anxiously) “Nyssa, what are you doing? Don’t get close to the waterfall!”

NYSSA
“I’m not going to touch it, Milgi. I just want to make a quick scan with my pocket tracker.”

Nyssa takes out her pocket tracker from her pocket and begins to scan the waterfall.

SALOGA
(astonished) “You have a pocket tracker in your pocket, Lady Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(cheerfully) “I try to make a point to take my pocket tracker with me.”

BILLY
(cheerfully) “Just like I make a point to bring my camera.”

NYSSA
“Precisely, Billy.”

Nyssa continues scanning the waterfall with her pocket tracker. There is a steady bleeping whir coming from the tracker that is slow and paced. Billy finishes taking photos of the controls’ emblem with his camera. He then joins Nyssa as she scans away.

BILLY
“Found anything interesting, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “The water levels seem adequate. There’s nothing residually wrong with the rate of flow in the waterfall. I can’t find or identify…” (Pause; disturbed) “Wait a minute!”

BILLY
(concerned) “What is it, Nyssa? What have you found?”

NYSSA
“There’s something flowing in the water particles. Something the tracker can’t register properly. I’ll boost the signal for a clearer reading.”

Nyssa boosts the signal on her pocket tracker to do just that. The bleeps on her tracker whir frequently this time.

BILLY
(gradually) “Well, what is it Nyssa? What is the tracker saying?”

NYSSA
(disturbed) “I don’t know, Billy. The tracker’s picking up some random anomalies in the water. It’s detecting a malign intelligence in the water.”

SALOGA
“Malign intelligence? Are you sure?”

NYSSA
“Positive.” (Pause) “Are you sure you want the bad news, Saloga; Milgi?”

MILGI
“Tell us, Nyssa! What is it you’ve discovered?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “The random anomalies. They’re increasing exponentially. The malign intelligence is making itself more present in the water particles. I can’t begin to imagine what that means yet.”

Billy; Saloga and Milgi are disturbed by what Nyssa has said. The waterfall continues to flow rapidly.

SCENE #57 – INT – CONSUL CHAMBER, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, in the Consul chamber, the Doctor and Werna are brought in by the Fosters led by Proctor Glorfini. Sarumane and Bonncere are with them. They meet Rondus and Galadio seated in the Consul chamber.

GLORFINI
“Consuls! Apologies for this intrusion. But…”

GALADIO
(amazed) “It’s them, Rondus! At least two of them! The Doctor and our daughter Werna.”

RONDUS
“So it is, Galadio!” (to Glorfini) “Where did you find them, Glorfini?”

GLORFINI
“They were…”

SARUMANE
(interrupts) “They were in the River Manipulator Room, Consul Protector. Bonncere and I found them. We summoned Proctor Glorfini and his brothers to escort the Doctor and your daughter Werna to you two!”

GALADIO
(delighted) “Thank you, Sarumane; Bonncere! You’ve done well!”

RONDUS
(delighted) “Yes. Very well done indeed!” (to Doctor; Werna) “Doctor; Werna. We’re pleased we found you! We were worried that we’d lost you in the streets of Cordow and the gardens of Riverloth.”

DOCTOR
(wryly) “Thank you so much, Consul Protector. Your concern for us is most appreciated.”

GALADIO
“Where are your two friends, Doctor? Lady Nyssa and Mr. Billy? Are they still in Cordow?”

WERNA
(protests) “Mother; father! I refuse to have you treat us as criminals!”

RONDUS
(interrupts) “The Doctor broke our sacred laws, Werna! You knew that and you betrayed us! You aided the Doctor and his friends!”

WERNA
“The Doctor and his friends know there’s something wrong on Riverloth. They were summoned by the Tree to help us! I believe them. You ignored what they had to say. I didn’t. It’s hardly a betrayal!”

GALADIO
“Tell us, Doctor! Where are your two friends, Lady Nyssa and Mr. Billy?”

DOCTOR
“I refuse to say anything, Consuls of Riverloth.”

RONDUS
(challengingly) “Oh really?! Is that so, Doctor?”

DOCTOR
“Not unless you stop and listen to us. I am here to help as Werna said. Me and my friends. The best thing you can do is to put your trust in us and put aside these petty accusations against us.”

GALADIO
“If you refuse to cooperate, we will force the information out of you!”

RONDUS
“We have profound ways of making you talk, Doctor.”

WERNA
“Listen to yourselves, mother; father! You sound like a dictatorship! You don’t sound like a paradise!”

DOCTOR
“That’s exactly what I was thinking, Werna.”

SARUMANE
(interrupts; slyly) “Excuse me, Consuls! Allow me to make a suggestion.”

RONDUS
“Go ahead, Consul Sarumane.”

SARUMANE
“Thank you. I have a way of getting the answers out of the Doctor and Lady Werna. If you will allow it, I’ll take these two back to the River Manipulator Room. I’ll use the mind-probing technology in there on them.”

DOCTOR
(sighs; groans) “Oh no! Not the mind-probing technology!”

GALADIO
(surprised) “Where did you acquire this mind-probing technology from, Sarumane? It’s the first I ever heard of it.”

SARUMANE
“It’s something I acquired when conducting tests on the tributes, Consuls. It’s to ensure the survival of Riverloth and its future.”

WERNA
“You’d better watch out for Sarumane, mother; father! Don’t trust him! He’s been lying to you! He’s kept those tributes of Riverloth for his ‘tests’ like prisoners in a torture camp. Both he and Bonncere have lied to you! We saw it! The Doctor and I saw it!”

GALADIO
“That’s enough, Werna! You’ve said enough!”

DOCTOR
“Consul Sarumane admitted he had control of the Melkurs, Consuls!”

RONDUS
(shocked) “What?! What are you saying?”

DOCTOR
“We heard it from his mouth, Werna and I. Ask him yourself! See how he tries to deny it!”

SARUMANE
(slyly) “Beg your pardon, Consul Protector; Consul Galadio. I meant no disrespect by using ‘foul language’ on Riverloth. I had to say those words to persuade the Doctor and your daughter Werna to come out of hiding. The trick worked and I’m afraid to say it convinced these two.”

DOCTOR
(protests) “I saw what the Melkurs did. What they tried to do when they chased me; Nyssa and Billy on the hill to the Tree last night.” (realises; to Sarumane) “It was you! Wasn’t it, Sarumane?! You sent those Melkurs to kill us! You’re the false Consul that the Tree spoke to us of.”

SARUMANE
“As you can see, Consul Protector; Consul Galadio. Quite delirious, the two of them!”

GALADIO
“We see what you mean, Consul Sarumane.”

RONDUS
“Have the Fosters take them back to your River Manipulator Room, Sarumane. You can conduct your mind-probing on them there.”

SARUMANE
“Thank you, Consuls.” (to Glorfini) “Glorfini, take the Doctor and Lady Werna back to the River Manipulator Room. Have them guarded there! Bonncere and I will join you shortly.”

GLORFINI
“Yes, Consul Sarumane!” (to Fosters) “Brothers! Escort these two back to the River Manipulator Room!”

The Doctor and Werna get taken away by the Fosters. The Consul chamber doors slide open as they go out.

WERNA
(protests) “You can’t do this to us!” (to Sarumane) “You won’t get away with this, Sarumane! I promise you! You won’t get away with it!”

DOCTOR
(cries) “Whatever it is you’re up to Sarumane, I will stop you! I will prevent any evil you’re about to inflict on this planet.”

But the Doctor’s words get drowned, as the doors of the Consul chamber slide shut once they’re out.

SCENE #58 – EXT – WATERFALL, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
Meanwhile, back at the waterfall, Nyssa and Billy inspect the waterfall for a while whilst Saloga and Milgi are elsewhere down the hill.

BILLY
“You suspect there’s an evil entity in this river, hey Nyssa?”

NYSSA
(gradually) “I’m not sure. But I have a theory. Evil can manifest itself in many forms. Energy travels at a fast rate. This can be so in the form of water particles.”

BILLY
(puzzled) “I don’t understand what you mean, Nyssa.”

NYSSA
(gradually) “If this malign intelligence has come here from a faraway place in the darkest recesses of the universe, then maybe that’s how…this false Consul whoever she or he is…”

BILLY
(interrupts) “Rondus; Sarumane; Galadio or Bonncere…”

NYSSA
(continues) “Then maybe that’s how this false Consul was able to allow a legion of evil entities into the Melkur robots on Riverloth. He or she was influenced by this evil intelligence to insert the evil entities into the Melkur robots.” (realises) “The evil influence that the Tree forewarned us about.”

BILLY
“But why? Why do such a thing? It doesn’t make sense.”

NYSSA
“Just as Riverloth is supposed to be a society based on the good and positive aspects of Traken; there are also those who admire the negative aspects. That’s my theory anyway. But I’m not sure it’s valid.”

BILLY
“It’s a good theory though. I can well believe that to be the case.” (groans) “Oh I wished it wasn’t something evil. I hoped that this visit to Riverloth would put our minds at rest. That it would be a pleasant paradise to visit. That we wouldn’t face anymore evil monstrous beasts like the Daleks; the Dwaxi and the Vegrons.”

NYSSA
“The Tree summoned us remember, Billy? We knew this was going to be a dangerous visit to Riverloth. You knew that when we agreed to come.”

BILLY
“Yes, I remember.” (Pause) “I was so worried about you, Nyssa. When you were anxious and determined to respond to the Tree’s summons, I didn’t know what to expect. I was hoping this business would be sorted out as soon as possible. That it wouldn’t be so serious. I’m sorry I didn’t know better.”

NYSSA
(reassuringly) “It’s alright, Billy. I understand.” (Pause) “Thank you for your concern for me. It was very sweet and thoughtful of you.”

BILLY
“That’s okay. I want to make sure that you’re safe. You’re my friend, hey?”

NYSSA
“Yes. Yes I am.”

Moment of silence.

BILLY
“Are you receiving any more contact from the Tree, Nyssa? Has it…’she’ been communicating with you recently?”

NYSSA
“No. Not lately. We seem limited on information about what’s going on. I wish the Tree would contact me again. To tell us what’s going on.”

BILLY
“I’d rather the Tree didn’t. Seeing you used by the Tree in that way when ‘she’ wants to talk to us scares me. I was so afraid that you weren’t going to be your normal self when you had the Tree speaking through you.”

NYSSA
(pleased) “You care about me, don’t you Billy?”

BILLY
“Well of course I do, Nyssa. Why wouldn’t I?”

Just then, they’re interrupted by Saloga and Milgi who come to them.

SALOGA
“Hey! Lady Nyssa; Mr Billy!”

Nyssa and Billy come down the hill to meet them.

SALOGA
“There you are! We wondered what had become of you.”

MILGI
“We’d better get moving! We’re worried the Fosters may come looking for us. We don’t want to be seen out in the open for too long.”

SALOGA
“Have you been able to form any more theories, Nyssa; Billy?!”

BILLY
“Just one. Nyssa seems to think that this ‘evil’ intelligence in the waterfall comes from some faraway place in the universe.”

NYSSA
“I don’t have any profound evidence. But the water particles in the River seem to be a way for the intelligence to make its transfer into Riverloth.”

MILGI
“So what do you suggest we do then, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“I’d like to go back to the TARDIS. Conduct more studies on these scans I took of the water particles. I might be able to identify what this malign intelligence is.”

BILLY
“Nyssa? The emblem on the waterfall manipulator controls I saw. I’m sure I saw it before in the River Manipulator on that secret compartment panel door. I’d like to take a photo of that with my camera and compare the two photos of both emblems together in the TARDIS when we get back there.”

NYSSA
“Yes, Billy. We’ll do that. We’ll go to the River Manipulator Room first before heading back to the TARDIS. Hopefully we’ll see the Doctor and Werna in the River Manipulator Room.”

BILLY
“Let’s hope so!”

NYSSA
(to Saloga; Milgi) “Saloga; Milgi? Will you take us to the River Manipulator Room, please?”

MILGI
“Yes! We’ll make our way through the tunnel to get there!”

SALOGA
“Come! Follow us!”

Nyssa and Billy follow Saloga and Milgi, as they leave the waterfall area.

SCENE #59 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
In the River Manipulator Room, the Doctor and Werna are strapped into cubicles. Sarumane and Bonncere oversee the operation.

SARUMANE
“Thank you, Proctor Glorfini! You and your Fosters can go now.”

GLORFINI
“Very good, Consul Sarumane.” (to Fosters) “Brothers, come!”

With that, Glorfini and the Fosters leave. Sarumane and Bonncere are left with the Doctor and Werna in the room.

DOCTOR
(protests) “This won’t help you getting answers, Sarumane. Mind probes won’t work on me. I’m resistant to mind probing technology. I’ve resisted it many times.”

SARUMANE
“I’m not going to mind-probe you, Doctor. Nor you, dear Lady Werna.”

WERNA
(puzzled) “What? Then why have you got us strapped in these cubicles?”

SARUMANE
(to Bonncere) “Bonncere! Apply the headsets to the Doctor and Lady Werna’s heads.”

BONNCERE
“But you said you weren’t going to mind-probe them, Sarumane.”

SARUMANE
(stresses) “If you please, Bonncere!”

BONNCERE
(baffled) “Very well. I’ll do it.”

Bonncere does as Sarumane asks, as he goes to fetch the headsets for the Doctor and Werna’s heads.

DOCTOR
“What is it you have in ‘mind’ then, Sarumane? What are you going to do with Werna and me?”

SARUMANE
“It’s straight-forward, Doctor. What I have in mind, is to make use of the residual power left in the River Manipulator. I’ve made use of the machine lately. It has left over some hazardous energy deposits which are connected to the River and the Tree.”

Bonncere begins to apply the headsets to the Doctor and Werna’s heads.

WERNA
“I don’t see what that’s got to do with us, Sarumane!”

SARUMANE
“What I’ve got in mind is to feed the residual power of the River Manipulator into those headsets of yours being put on you by Bonncere. The power will be sent directly into your heads and into your brains.”

WERNA
(shocked) “What?!”

DOCTOR
“What happens to us if the residual power of the River Manipulator hits our brains, Sarumane?”

SARUMANE
(coldly) “You’ll both be burned alive. That’s what will happen, Doctor! You and Lady Werna. Both of you will be burned alive!”

Bonncere finishes applying the headsets to the Doctor and Werna.

BONNCERE
(abjectly) “Sarumane? Are you sure we should be doing this…?”

SARUMANE
(sharply) “Silence, Bonncere! This does not concern you!”

WERNA
(protests) “You can’t do this to us, Sarumane! That’s not fair! You’ll be committing murder! Is that the good behaviour of a Consul like you?”

SARUMANE
“We’ll make it look like an accident. I will tell your parents that you both died during the mind-probe process, Lady Wena. They will believe my story and be none the wiser.”

WERNA
(shocked) “You can’t do this, Sarumane! You can’t do it!”

SARUMANE
“You two have seen too much! This must be done for Riverloth’s survival!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “So you are the false Consul the Tree spoke of then. You’re the one who’s turned back on former Riverlothian/Trakenite ideals. Being surrounded by all this technology, it’s no surprise.”

SARUMANE
“Silence, Doctor!”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Now I know why you’re using those people in that induction chamber as your sacrifices or tributes, Sarumane. You’re using the water in their bodies as fuel supplies for Riverloth. You’re draining it out of them. They’ll end up dead whilst Riverloth goes on.”

WERNA
(horrified) “That can’t be true! It mustn’t be true!” (to Sarumane) “Sarumane, please say you didn’t do this! You didn’t kill those Riverlothians! You aren’t killing them! Are you?!”

SARUMANE
“Like I said, Lady Werna. You and the Doctor know too much.”

DOCTOR
“Don’t you realise that won’t work, Sarumane. You can’t keep draining water from people’s bodies for Riverloth to survive. By the time you’ve drained all the water you need from fellow Riverlothians, there won’t be anyone else left on this planet.”

SARUMANE
(passionately) “He will save us! By the glory and grace of our gods, he will save us!”

DOCTOR
“Who will save you? Who’s ‘he’, Consul Sarumane? Tell me!”

SARUMANE
“Enough of your questions, Doctor! It’s time to start work on you!”

BONNCERE
(protests) “No! I can’t allow this, Sarumane! This has gone far too long! This is cold-blooded murder like Lady Werna said.”

Bonncere makes to leave. Sarumane takes out a weapon from his pocket and aims it at Bonncere’s head.

SARUMANE
“Stay where you are, Bonncere! Don’t leave this room!”

BONNCERE
“I don’t care! I’m going to tell Rondus and Galadio everything…”

Sarumane opens fire, firing a laser beam at Bonncere. Bonncere screams out in pain, before he collapses to the floor.

WERNA
(cries) “Bonncere! Bonncere!”

No response. Bonncere is dead.

WERNA
(angrily; to Sarumane) “You murdered him, Sarumane! He was upset by what you were doing and you murdered him! Murderer?!”

DOCTOR
“That was entirely unnecessary, Sarumane!”

SARUMANE
(ignores Doctor; Werna) “Now! It’s time for me to continue my work! I no longer need Bonncere to help me!”

Sarumane continues his work, as the Doctor and Werna remain strapped in their cubicles.

SCENE #60 – INT – TUNNEL, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
In the tunnel, with Nyssa; Billy; Saloga and Milgi, they crawl to reach the River Manipulator Room.

BILLY
“Is it much further…to the River Manipulator Room?”

NYSSA
(amused) “Really, Billy! You asked that same question when we were in the tunnel to the rebels’ hideout with Werna.”

BILLY
“I know, but…I get a sense of claustrophobia in these tunnels. I can’t help it. I feel ‘boxed in’ in this small space.”

MILGI
“Don’t fret, Mr Billy. We’ve nearly reached the River Manipulator Room. Just a few centremetres more.”

They get closer to the end of the tunnel. They then hear shouts and screams from the end of the tunnel.

WERNA
(from a distance; screams) “Stop this! Stop this at once, Sarumane!”

DOCTOR
(from a distance; shouts) “Sarumane, tell us! Who is your benefactor?!”

BILLY
“That’s the Doctor and Werna alright! Isn’t it, Nyssa?”

NYSSA
“Yes! They sound like they’re in trouble!”

MILGI
“They mentioned Sarumane! He must be doing something to them!”

SALOGA
(urgently) “Everyone! We must get to the River Manipulator Room as fast as we can! There’s not a moment to lose!”

MILGI
“Come on then! Get moving! Crawl forwards!”

Nyssa; Billy; Saloga and Milgi crawl forwards to reach the River Manipulator Room at the end of the tunnel.

SCENE #61 – INT – RIVER MANIPULATOR ROOM, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
In the River Manipulator Room, Sarumane is about to initiate the transfer of residual power from the River Manipulator into the Doctor and Werna.

SARUMANE
“Power transfer about to begin! Don’t worry, you two! This will be a swift and painless death. You have nothing to fear.”

DOCTOR
“Sarumane! Whatever it is you’re doing, just stop! Stop this before it’s too late! Let me help you! Tell me who it is you’re working for!”

SARUMANE
“Sorry, Doctor. But your time’s up! Both yours and Lady Werna’s!”

WERNA
(cries) “No! Don’t press that control button, Sarumane! Don’t!”

Suddenly, the secret compartment door bursts wide open! Out come Saloga; Milgi; Nyssa and Billy as they step into the room. Saloga and Milgi charge at Sarumane and pin him to the floor, managing to stop him from pressing the button. There is a struggle on the floor.

SALOGA
(boldly) “Oh no, you don’t! Not this time, Sarumane!”

SARUMANE
(astonished) “The rebels! Werna’s faithful rebel friends. I see now!” (recognises; gloats) “You’re Saloga and Milgi! Two disgraced Riverlothian university students!”

MILGI
“That’s enough, Sarumane! This time we’re going to teach you a lesson! You’re the student from now on.”

Meanwhile Nyssa and Billy free the Doctor and Werna from their cubicles, as they take their headsets off.

DOCTOR
(relieved) “Nyssa; Billy! Thank goodness you’re alright!”

NYSSA
“Are you alright, Doctor? From what we heard in the tunnel, it seemed like Sarumane was going to kill you two!”

WERNA
“He was! And he almost succeeded!”

DOCTOR
“But thankfully you two; Saloga and Milgi got here just in time!”

BILLY
“That’s okay, Doctor. We’re glad we got here!”

The Doctor, Nyssa, Billy and Werna then join Saloga and Milgi who are pinning Sarumane to the floor.

SARUMANE
(defiantly) “You won’t stop me! None of you will stop me! I have my servants to command! They will see the survival of Riverloth is assured!”

MILGI
“This isn’t about Riverloth’s survival, Sarumane. This is about your ambition for glory, power and conquest!”

SALOGA
“Besides you haven’t got any servants to help you here, Sarumane. Even if you did, we’d be able to stop them…”

SARUMANE
(shouts out loud) “Melkurs! Advance!”

At that moment, doors in the wall slide open and Melkurs enter into the room. They stalk menacingly towards the Doctor and his friends to attack.

SALOGA
“Me and my big mouth, Milgi.”

MIGLI
“I’d say it again, Saloga.”

DOCTOR
(to Sarumane) “So you were lying to Rondus and Galadio, Sarumane! It was all pretence! You really can command the Melkurs to your will.” (gravely) “I wish you really were lying, Sarumane.”

NYSSA
(cries) “Doctor! They’re about to open fire!”

DOCTOR
(urgently) “Everybody! Duck!”

The Melkurs open fire, with red beams firing out from their eyes. The Doctor and his friends duck down just in time.

WERNA
“Come on everyone! Back to the secret compartment! We’ll be safe inside the tunnel!”

DOCTOR
“Agreed! Back to the secret compartment, everyone!”

The Doctor and his friends make their way back head-down to the secret compartment door. As they go back, Billy stays at the secret compartment door whilst the Doctor; Nyssa; Werna; Milgi and Saloga get inside.

DOCTOR
“Right! Here we are!” (to Werna) “Werna, you go in first!”

WERNA
“Right!”

Werna gets inside the secret compartment. Everyone else follows in after her, whilst Billy takes out his camera from his pocket.

DOCTOR
“That’s it! Then it’s Saloga; then it’s Milgi; then it’s Nyssa and then…” (realises; impatiently) “Billy, what are you doing?!”

BILLY
(to himself) “It is different! The emblem design is different to the one I saw at the waterfall area.” (to Doctor) “Hold on a minute, Doctor. I’ve got to take a photo with my camera.”

Billy then snaps away with his camera, as he takes a photo of the emblem design on the secret compartment door. The Melkurs advance closer, as red beams whizz past by at the Doctor and Billy.

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Billy, we haven’t got time to be taking photos with your camera! Get inside this compartment now!”

BILLY
“Just one more second, Doctor! One more second!”

Eventually, Billy gets the photo-shot he wants with his camera. He puts the camera back into his pocket.

BILLY
“There! That’s done!”

More shots fired by the Melkurs whizz past by the Doctor and Billy at the compartment door.

DOCTOR
(impatiently) “Now Billy! Get inside!”

Billy climbs into the secret compartment after Nyssa; Milgi; Saloga and Werna. The Doctor climbs in after him. Sarumane then recovers as he joins the Melkurs who advance on the Doctor at the secret compartment.

SARUMANE
(cries) “Stop him! Stop him! Don’t let the Doctor and his friends escape!”

DOCTOR
(cheerfully) “Sorry! Must dash! Don’t fancy staying here for too long!”

SARUMANE
“Stop! At once!”

But it’s too late. The Doctor is inside and shuts the secret compartment door once he’s in. Sarumane and the Melkurs are left in the room.

MELKURS
(in unison) “They have escaped, Consul Sarumane!”

SARUMANE
“Yes, you fools! I saw it! Now everything can be ruined with the Doctor and his friends alive!”

SCENE #62 – INT – TUNNEL, RIVERLOTH – DAY, MORNING
Inside the tunnel, Werna; Saloga; Milgi; the Doctor; Nyssa and Billy crawl a fair distance away from the River Manipulator Room. They pant for breath as they keep on crawling in the tunnel.

NYSSA
(pants) “Doctor! I think…I think we’ve come a fair way from the River Manipulator Room now!”

BILLY
(pants) “Yeah! Can we stop for a rest? I mean…nobody’s chasing after us, are they?!”

DOCTOR
(out of breath) “Yes! Yes, of course, Nyssa; Billy. We’ll stop for a rest.”

The group eventually stop in the tunnel to take a break. The six take deep breaths, as they recover their wits whilst in the tunnel.

BILLY
“I don’t think…I’ve experienced…such a narrow escape…in all my life. My heart’s pumping fast now! I feel hot all over.”

NYSSA
“That’s the adrenalin, Billy. You’ll be alright, I’m sure.”

BILLY
(baffled) “Really? If you say so, Nyssa.”

SALOGA
(frustrated) “You know what this means, don’t you Werna?”

WERNA
“Yeah. Our cover’s been blown. They’ll know where to look for us. For our secret hideout. They’ll send in Melkurs to find us and kill us.”

MILGI
(frustrated) “We worked hard to keep our hideout from any Consuls and Fosters. Now we’ll have to start again…with Melkurs”

SALOGA
(wryly) “Great! Just wonderful. I was settling in so well into our new rebels’ hideout. I can’t afford to give it up all so soon again.”

WERNA
“We might need to move far away somewhere from Cordow. In Arndon or Galartod perhaps. Though my parents will be suspicious why I’ve been gone from them for such a long time and not being with them at home.”

DOCTOR
(realises) “Werna! There is a place for you and your friends to keep your group a secret. It’ll be temporary, but it’s a good place to discuss this business with the Melkurs; Sarumane; the Tree and the River.”

SALOGA
(surprised) “You have a place, Doctor?”

WERNA
“Is it this ship you and your friends arrived in that you’re talking about, Doctor? Are you going to take us to your ship?”

DOCTOR
“Yes. There are some things I want to do and investigate in the TARDIS. I’m sure Nyssa and Billy have some things in the TARDIS they’ll want to investigate too.” (to Nyssa; Billy) “Don’t you, Nyssa; Billy?”

NYSSA
“We found something in the water particles in the waterfall, Doctor. Some malign intelligence.”

BILLY
“Yeah And I discovered two emblem designs on the controls of the waterfall and the River Manipulator Room. They look so similar and yet there’s something different about both of them. I’ve taken photos of both emblem designs. I’d like to compare them in the TARDIS.”

DOCTOR
“So that’s why you were taking photos back there then, Billy.”

BILLY
“Yes! That’s right!”

NYSSA
“And I took some scans of the water in the waterfall. I want to conduct an analysis on those scans to assess what’s in the water particles.”

DOCTOR
“Yes Nyssa; Billy. Well in that case, we’ll head back to the TARDIS then.” (to Werna) “Werna? Is that agreeable with you?”

WERNA
“Of course, Doctor! My friends and I are happy to take refuge in your ship. Where is it?”

DOCTOR
“It’s somewhere in the Cordow gardens. If you take us there that would be most helpful.”

Eventually, the group continue to crawl through the tunnel and make for the Cordow gardens.

This dialogue had me in hysterics.

    SARUMANE

Brilliant part three of chapter two, the reveal of Sarumane as the false Consul was a great moment he’s a unlikable character brilliantly written by your good self & has depth & not just another moustache twirling pantomime villain.

The discovery of how evil manifests itself in the water which came from the human sacrifices or tributes to fuel Riverloth is a chilling masterstroke one I’m sure the late Robert Holmes would approved of.

I can easily picture Peter & Sarah speaking your lines mate & this story is a easy one to visualize in one’s mind, I’d love to hear a BF version of this & your other stories mate they are all strongly written Fifth Doctor adventures.

    Hi Simon.

Thanks for your comments on Chapter 7 of ‘Part Two’ of this story.

Yes, I know! I just couldn’t resist writing that line of dialogue about the mind-probing technology. I can visualise Peter Davison trying to mimic Paul Jerricho in saying that line of dialogue.

I’m glad you enjoyed the reveal of Sarumane as the false Consul in the story. I’m glad that you like how I’ve written him as a villain and you found depth in him and not as a 2-dimensional pantomime villain. It is tricky to write villains like that, and I hope Sarumane will get more interesting later on.

I’m pleased you like how I revealed that the evil manifests itself in the water from the human sacrifices/tributes to fuel Riverloth. It was a mind-boggling concept to get my head around while I developed the story. I’m glad you think Robert Holmes would have approved of this. 🙂

I’m pleased you’re enjoying ‘The Tree of Riverloth’ so far. These Fifth Doctor stories by me come from my enjoyment of the Big Finish audios of Peter and Sarah and I’d like to think are a tribute to them.

    Thanks.

    Hi Tim

Another great chapter in the Riverlothian story. This one was full of heart-stopping moments, wasn’t it! The mind-probing technology made me laugh, the Doctor must get really fed up with being threatened with that!

I liked how the threads of the story, with Nyssa and Billy’s discoveries, and the Doctor and Werna’s discoveries came back together just in the nick of time to save the Doctor and Werna.

I’m thinking that there is more to Werna than we have yet discovered; it seems that the Doctor thinks there is something else going on, I think, that we don’t know about yet. There’s obviously someone or something behind Sarumane’s evil plans, and he’s very evilly mad, isn’t he. I think he’s lost his sanity completely now, feeling that he is near to completing his schemes, and killing Bonncere means that he has passed the point of no return.

I can see that there is some evil influence that is now infecting the water, and that’s somehow related to what Sarumane is doing, I think. But I am very interested to learn what might be happening with the symbols that Billy has noticed are slightly different in different places. Are they some kind of warning symbols, maybe, or have they been placed there at the time the buildings were constructed, or later? Very intriguing!

Great story, Tim, I’m really enjoying working my way through it, and am looking forward to the next chapter.

    Hi Leigh

Very pleased you enjoyed this chapter in ‘The Tree of Riverloth’ story! Glad you enjoyed the heart-stopping moments in this!

Oh I’m glad you enjoyed the mind-probing line by the Doctor. I just had to add that into the story as I was writing it and make it echo Paul Jerricho’s Castellan’s similar line from ‘The Five Doctors’. 😀

Yes well those discoveries made by Nyssa and Billy with Saloga and Milgi and the ones made by the Doctor and Werna were a challenge to weave together in the story I can tell you. I’m glad they worked out well for you. I made sure I re-read the first two episodes of the story to get those discoveries right in order to fit in nicely with how the story comes together at the end. Glad you liked it when Nyssa and Billy with Saloga and Milgi manage to save the Doctor and Werna in the nick of time.

Interesting theories you have about Werna and Sarumane in the story so far. It was an element of making the audience guessing what was going on and who the real traitor was in the story. Sarumane clearly shows he’s in league with whoever’s behind all this by taking drastic actions such as torturing the Doctor and Werna and also shooting Bonncere in the process. Even Bonncere didn’t deserve that, did he?!

I’m glad you’ve picked up on the evil influence infecting the water of Riverloth and Billy picking up on the symbols he’s noticed whilst with Nyssa and the Doctor on Riverloth. All will be revealed I’m sure as you progress further into the story. I’m sure it’ll be worth it! 😀

Do you like how I’ve written for the Doctor, Nyssa and Billy in the story so far?

Thanks Leigh. Good to hear from you again! I look forward to hearing from you in the next chapter!

    Tim. 🙂
