Tegan meets the Merlin Doctor and Anna

This story called ‘Good Companions’ is by Peter Anghelides. It features an unspecified incarnation of the Doctor. Presumably, this is the Doctor from the future who was identified as Merlin in the TV story ‘Battlefield’. Peter Anghelides has written four ‘Doctor Who’ short stories featuring this Doctor.

There’s also the appearance of an older Tegan and the story is set in the 2030s. This was an intriguing and unusual ‘Doctor Who’ story to check out, as it depicts Tegan as a widow. She married someone called William Haybourne, a university lecturer that had sadly passed away in the 2030s. 😦

Apparently, Tegan and William were married for ten years. This story does contradict what’s been established with Tegan lately in terms of her post-TARDIS travels stories like ‘The Gathering’, ‘The Power of the Doctor’ and of course ‘Farewell, Sarah Jane’. There’s no mention of Nyssa in this story.

I know that ‘Good Companions’ was published before some of those post-TARDIS travel stories for Tegan were made, but I can’t help but feel Peter Anghelides’ version of what happened to Tegan is being ignored. Then again, this has also happened with ‘Asylum’, which features an older Nyssa.

I enjoyed checking out ‘Good Companions’ as a story featuring an older Tegan. It’s not great, but it’s a lot better than ‘Asylum’. It’s also interesting how Tegan meets up with this future incarnation of the Doctor and how she teams up with Anna, who became the Doctor’s companion quite recently. 😐
