Emily and the Dolphin with the Seventh Doctor and Mel
This story is by Dale Smith, and it features the Seventh Doctor and Mel. I enjoyed reading this story, especially as it has the Doctor and Mel helping a little girl called Emily, who is connected to a dolphin that’s in a computer. There were times when I wondered whether Emily was the computer or not. 🙂
There are elements of ‘Silence in the Library’/’Forest of the Dead’ featured in this short story, especially when Mel interacts with Emily on the beach at times. Mel finds herself having to do the Doctor’s work, whilst the Doctor is being the manipulator in the outside world with some soldiers. 😐
I could feel the Season 24 atmosphere of this story, especially since the Seventh Doctor and Mel were in it. There’s also a Douglas Adams aspect to this, as a dolphin is included. I’m reminded of the dolphins that said, “So long and thanks for all the fish!” in ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’.
I’m surprised the dolphin in this short story didn’t do the same thing. 😀 In the outside world, there is a sense of a war happening, especially with the European Zone and the Middle East Zone being World Zones. I don’t think it’s clearly defined, though Emily and the dolphin seem to be a big threat.
During the story, Snow White gets mentioned (I’m thinking of the Disney film whenever Snow White is mentioned in anything 😀 ). There’s also Greenpeace and Pease Pottage is mentioned. Pease Pottage is Mel’s home, which was explored in the Big Finish audio story ‘The Wrong Doctors’ made after this.
‘Driftwood’ rating – 7/10
