The Master, a Krynoid and a Talking Pigeon with the Seventh Doctor and Ace
This story called ‘Stop the Pigeon’ is by Robert Perry and Mike Tucker. It features the Seventh Doctor and Ace. It also features the Master, as played by Anthony Ainley. This is following on from ‘Survival’, where the Master is still infected by the virus from the Cheetah Planet. However, there’s a problem.
There’s a ‘Doctor Who’ novel called ‘First Frontier’, where the Master is immediately cured of the cheetah virus and is given a new regeneration cycle by the Tzun. I’ve not read that book yet, but I assume ‘Stop the Pigeon’ occurs before ‘First Frontier’, despite being published the other way round.
There’s an audiobook for ‘Stop the Pigeon’, read by Sophie Aldred, which is available in ‘Tales From The TARDIS: Volume One’. Unfortunately, like ‘Old Flames’, it’s an abridged audiobook reading, as the prose version of ‘Stop the Pigeon’ is very long as a short story. I had to read the story for about two days.
In the story, the Doctor and Ace help a young man called Joe, who lives in South Croydon in 2067. Joe finds himself in a strange creepy house after being aboard a tube train. Our heroes discover the Master is up to no good, as his plan involves babies and old people. A Krynoid is also causing trouble.
There’s also a talking pigeon featured in this story, who happens to be a biomechanical Virgoan space probe. It was funny when Sophie Aldred voiced the pigeon in the audiobook, especially with a high-pitched squeaky voice. I’m surprised the pigeon wasn’t given a name throughout this short story.
It’s also interesting how a Krynoid becomes involved, as it infects a Virgoan probe before it becomes absorbed by it. I enjoyed the Doctor’s confrontation scenes with the Master. It became tense when the Master allowed his feral side to come to the fore. In the prose verson, there’s an epilogue by the story’s end. 🙂
‘Stop the Pigeon’ rating – 8/10
