The Troubles of a Woman in Cambridge in 1979 with the Fourth Doctor and Romana

This story called ‘Glass’ is by Tara Samms. It features the Fourth Doctor and the second Romana. Tara Samms is actually a pseudonym for Stephen Cole, the editor of the ‘Short Trips’ book. This is the first and won’t be the last time that Stephen Cole would use that pseudonym for certain stories.

‘Glass’ is a story taken from the point of view of a young woman working in her shop one day before she sees a face in a glass window. The face persistently torments her during her daily life, and she soon receives help from the Doctor and Romana who come to visit her and stop the face in the glass.

There’s an audiobook for ‘Glass’, read by Sophie Aldred, which is available in ‘Tales From The TARDIS: Volume One’. Unfortunately, like ‘Old Flames’, ‘Stop the Pigeon’ and ‘Freedom’, it’s an abridged audiobook reading, as the prose version of ‘Glass’ doesn’t match to Sophie’s reading on audio.

What’s fascinating about ‘Glass’ as a ‘Doctor Who’ story is that it takes place after the original ‘Shada’. This story is set in 1979 Cambridge after all, and the Doctor and Romana are trying to pick up and resolve the remains of Skagra’s work with his Sphere when they’re visiting the young woman.

It’s confusing in one sense, since shouldn’t the Fourth Doctor and Romana have forgotten about their original ‘Shada’ adventure, thanks to what occurred in ‘The Five Doctors’ with the time scoop and everything? Had the Eighth Doctor and Romana been in this story instead, it’d make more sense.

A peculiar thing about this story is that the young woman isn’t given a name. Her husband is named Alan and her son is named Jason, but we don’t know who she is. She could be Jill or Susan for all I know. The face in the glass isn’t named either. Romana also isn’t named throughout, which is odd. 😐

‘Glass’ rating – 7/10
