Daleks and the Plexus with the Seventh Doctor and Ace
The seventh story of the ‘Doctor Who’ Puffin e-shorts series is ‘The Ripple Effect’ by Malorie Blackman. Here’s a YouTube interview with Malorie Blackman.
Malorie Blackman was the Children’s Laureate from 2013 to 2015, having written the ‘Noughts & Crosses’ novel series and ‘Noble Conflict’. After doing ‘The Ripple Effect’, Malorie would go on to co-write the ‘Doctor Who’ episode called ‘Rosa’ with Chris Chibnall for Series 11, which is pretty amazing!
‘The Ripple Effect’ features the Seventh Doctor and Ace. The story is divided into ten chapters and has the nostalgic feeling of ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ in it. 🙂 The audiobook version of this story is read by the author Malorie Blackman. I would’ve liked Sophie Aldred to have read the story really.
Not that Malorie Blackman is incorrect to read this story. After all, she wrote it and it’s her right to read this tale. But Sophie would be more suited to this story after having read ‘The Roots of Evil’ and ‘Something Borrowed’ and I think she could provide a convincing voice for the Seventh Doctor here.
In the story, the Seventh Doctor and Ace are trapped inside the TARDIS within the temporal Plexus. The Doctor finds a way out, only for him and Ace to end up in an alternative reality where the Daleks are peace-loving and friendly. This is something the Doctor finds pretty hard to accept and believe. 😐
I liked how this story presents the Daleks in an intriguing new light where they’re not the psychotic killers that we know and loathe and it takes place in an alternative universe. I do like the dynamic relationship between the Seventh Doctor and Ace and how she challenges him on his own beliefs. 🙂
‘The Ripple Effect’ rating – 8/10
