‘Make A Star’ with the Third Doctor, Jo and the Master

This story is by Andrew Spokes and it features the Third Doctor and Jo. This is a very enjoyable ‘Doctor Who’ adventure set during the Third Doctor era. I’m surprised Andrew Spokes hasn’t written more ‘Doctor Who’ stories since then as this short story is true to the Third Doctor era throughout. 🙂

Jo gets to be one of the contestants for the ‘Make A Star’ TV show. She meets up with other contestants like Lucy Wilkins who’s full of herself and Chris Summers who isn’t sure why he’s a success with his fans. As the story progresses, the Doctor and Jo get to meet the show’s producer. 😐

This story is divided into two staves. I like how the Doctor and Jo’s relationship is developed in this short story as I could easily hear Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning’s voices as their characters. This story also features a cracking appearance of Roger Delgado’s Master, the producer behind the show.

I didn’t know what to expect when I read this story for the first time. I was surprised the Master happened to be behind the disappearances of the contestants in the show. I should have probably expected it, but it didn’t occur to me when I first read it. It was a joy reading it a second time round.

I like the references made to Jamie and Zoe from ‘The War Games’ as the Doctor almost shares to Jo about what happened to them at the end of their travels with him. I also liked the references to ‘Terror of the Autons’ involving the Master and plastic as well as Latep from ‘Planet of the Daleks’. 🙂
