Giant Termites with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric
This story features the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric and is the only one to feature the complete Season 19 cast in the 1983 ‘Doctor Who Annual’. It’s also the only comic book story to be featured in the annual. I found this to be a very enjoyable adventure compared to the previous ones.
That’s not to say it’s a great story. But with the characters speaking a lot of dialogue in comic book form, I was able to engage with the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric for the most part. This story has our TARDIS visiting the planet Isopterus where they encounter giant termites that escort them away.
The giant termites intend to use them for food storage. The Doctor and friends also help a group of colonists on the planet Isopterus to escape from the menace of the deadly giant termites. The Doctor also uses this dream machine to lure the giant termites to an imaginary food source far away.
I’m surprised the story didn’t take place on the planet Vortis where the termite-like Zarbi where. Mind you, it’s just as well since the Doctor and Nyssa would later visit Vortis in ‘Return to the Web Planet’. How come Nyssa didn’t refer to the Isopterus termites when she saw Zarbi for the first time? 😀
‘On the Planet Isopterus’ is not a terrific ‘Doctor Who Annual’ adventure by a long shot. But it was enjoyable to read in comic form and I enjoyed it with the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric as a foursome. I’m curious about where Adric went before and after this story took place in the annual.
