Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 2, Episode 3

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I saw this ‘Grantchester’ episode twice, due to the fact that a heavy rainstorm occurred nearby to where I lived in Cardiff last Wednesday night. 😀 I’m glad I saw the episode twice since I found the conclusion to another murder mystery by Sidney and Geordie very satisfying to watch in the story. 🙂

In the episode, James Norton as Sidney is currently dating Seline Hizli as police clerk Margaret Ward. Despite the two being interested in each other, Tessa Peake-Jones as housekeeper Mrs. Maguire is clearly annoyed by Margaret’s informality to Sidney. It also portrays the loneliness Mrs. Maguire has.

Later, Sidney meets Jeremy Neumark Jones as blood-stained Theo Graham, who makes a confession, believing he killed his landlord. Sidney and Robson Green as Geordie meet his landlord, Michael Shaeffer as Eric Whitaker, who happens to be alive. Whittaker’s also a bully to his wife and daughter.

Some days later, Eric Whittaker is fatally struck by a hit and run driver. Sidney and Geordie suspect Theo is involved and he’s soon on the run. Our detective duo investigates the boarding house that was once run by Eric Whittaker as well as his seductive wife/now widow Vivian, played by Liz White.

Like most ‘Grantchester’ episodes, its compelling how Sidney and Geordie solve the mystery by uncovering other suspects and motives in the boarding house. For a while, Sidney is onto the person who actually killed Eric Whittaker, building up to a very dramatic and satisfying climax in the story. 🙂

The episode also explores Al Weaver as Leonard Finch’s character, since he goes out on a date with fellow gay man Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe, who debuted in the first episode of Series 2. Interesting how Leonard and Daniel have formed an attachment so quickly by this point in the series.

Also in the episode, Morven Christie as Amanda is back, even though her husband warned Sidney to stay away from her. It’s becoming clear by this point that Amanda isn’t happy in her married life with Guy Hopkins. She wanted to say something important to Sidney. I think it’s how she feels about him.

Amanda gets caught for shoplifting before she’s taken by Geordie to his home with Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy, since Amanda doesn’t want to return home to Guy. Geordie gives the same advice to Amanda about staying away from Sidney. But Amanda is not willing to since she wants to see Sidney.

But soon she sees Sidney with Margaret by the end of the episode and is unable to face him. It’s fascinating to see how the Sidney/Margaret relationship is working out. Whether it’ll be something permanent, I’m not sure. Anyway, Series 2, Episode 3 is another good ‘Grantchester’ episode to see.

Here’s hoping my review on Series 2, Episode 4 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
